There are a lot of FMV shots floating around but I could not find a clear one. Such as this one: http://www.cosplaylab.com/cosplayers/costumes/details.asp?costumeid=112228
But here are a few ingame shots, I hope they help.

Good luck!

I can try taking some screen shots for you ^^ I can't guarantee that it'll work because sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't <_< Stupid computer. Feh. I plan on making this soon, too, so I'll need the screen caps myself at one point so it won't be any trouble at all ^^

You know, I think I may attempt this outfit now....I'd get more mileage out of my Mamimi wig :D (you must admit, her hair looks a lot like Mamimi's in color and style, especially in the last picture Miss Valentine posted)

shinjuchan - I know how you feel =x_X= I don't like pink much....but there's always her school uniform, too =^^= (Selphie's is about the same :D they look really cute). I like both outfits, personally. I guess the deciding factor for me will be whether or not I can stand wearing pink for any period of time..

Hey! I don't know why I didn't find this thread earlier >.>; Anyway, a few weeks back, I myself decided to cosplay KH2 Kairi to Katsucon this coming February, and I've been searching for better ref pics, and these are some good ones ;D

So good luck on your costume, and I only hope I can get mine done in time. o.o; And if I have any questions about the costume, can I ask you? Or we could ask each other questions or something.. keep in touch since we are doing the same costume. Best of luck XD

Pink converse! That's a good idea, I might go for that! Then get like extra long black laces and what not.

Hmm.. I've gotten everything on my KH2 Kairi down except the wig.. and I'm ordering from Cosworx, but I'm just not sure which color to get. I was looking at the Mediums with Bangs, and I found the wig Lucy http://www.cosworx.com/product.php?productid=16423&cat=2448&page=1, in the color Henna Red, which was the closest I could find.. but I'm just not sure if it's the right color to go with.. and the Burgundy looked a little too purple.. >. >

Any ideas? anyone? ;D

*edit: I would of course be cutting the wig/shaping it more for Kairi's hairstyle.

I would love just to create this as my own side-project for someone else to wear...

Ideally how would the belt hold up on the body? Would it be Fitted or Attached to the Pink Dress?

Pink converse are the way to go with the shoes, I suppose you would have to modify the Bottom Sole and Paint it black and getting black laces and TA DA!

heehee...I too want to do this cosplay...probably for Otakon of this year...anywho, what type of fabric do you guys think would be good for the pink??? If I can find it in the right color, I want to use vinyl (not the shiny stuff, of course) or pleather...but it's gonna be hard to find the right shade XD

Oh! Weren't you the Kairi from AUSA's KH skit? I loved your Kairi. I'm trying to make KH2 Kairi too.

I'm going to try looking for the vinyl stuff too, but I may try some experimenting with some regular fabric first. And it'll be hard to find the pink converses for me.

Yea, so now that I have decent reference pictures (Thank you so much everyone!!!) I am definately going to make this for Anime Boston this year, assuming that I am able to go.

Has anyone else noticed the gradient effect on the zippers? they appear to go from gold to silver at the top. Is anyone planning to do this, and if so, how do you think you might go about it? I was thinking about getting a gold metallic sharpie and doing it that way, because any kind of paint would make the zipper get stuck and would look strange.

And if anyone cares, or is having trouble selecting fabric for this, the pink I am thinking would work best in a twill.

For the shoes, I believe that converses would work, but the one problem is that they dont make them in quite that color, it is a very pale pink, not the bubble gum pink that they have now (I own a pair, they are pretty bright). I would go with white and then either dye or paint them.

Ok, there are my thoughts, If i think of some other stuff I will post it! :D

I didn't notice that they changed from gold to silver, I just noticed that her zippers were gold looking in the opening sequences and silver during gameplay.. and the pink that I used for the dress part looks way better with just silver zippers than it does with bronzey ones. :P

Kairi G
02-04-2006, 03:30 PM
yeah, thats why I am gonna get silver, and see how they look before I decide to do the gold.
I just bought my fabric actually, I got a medium weight cotton twill for the pink, a white stretch vinyl so I do not have to worry about cutting the scallops, it has a slight sheen to it, I think it will be very nice. I got some black stretch pleather too for the belts, pouch and hood. It is a good weight for both purposes. If anyone is having trouble finding pleather, I know some websites that you can order it from.

Does anyone know a good place to order the zippers?

I was gonna do this costume, but decided to take it off my list (due to time constraints....and the fact that I don't really like pink :P) I may still do the schoolgirl outfit, but not this time around. I have too many costumes to do already =x_x=

I already bought the materials for the dress (pink fabric, white fabric, and 3 zippers). I'm looking to get rid of it, and posted about it here: http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=71669&page=9. PM me if you're interested.

Is white vinyl really a good material to use for it? In my opinion it should be something almost as the same material as pink twil or softer to compliment it.

Can anyone suggest a good pattern for the dress? or should it be done free-hand.

Jen-neko
02-04-2006, 10:12 PM
The pattern I bought to use for my dress was New Look 6468... It is a little long, but that's easily fixed. There are two seams where the two side zippers are supposed to be, so I figured that would make it easier to construct.

The vinyl is not probably what your thinking of, it isnt shiny, or really stiff. I am using it in order to have a fabric sturdy enough to hold the scallops and not be limp. I also didnt want to have to use multiple layers, so this should probably work well. Hopefully I will get it goin soon so you guys can see how it works.

DemonMiko
02-05-2006, 06:29 PM
Do you guys think that denium would be a good choice for the dress? o.o It seems like one of the few things that would be sturdy enough to hold everything together.

i have found that finding pink or white demin is hard x.x;;... I ended up with twill, which seems to be doing the job so far ^^;

Kairi G

If you have access to denim, it would not be a bad choice, my twill is close to denim weight and I think it is going to work well.

Though best to post here. I'm working on my Kairi outfit. I'm even adding more sewing lines to the outfit. I didn't relize untill today that the back of the ress is in two peices and so has those sewing lines. I might place some in but I don't think I'm willing to cute down the back and sew it back up.

If people want to know a place to get some really cool two-way zippers, I ordered mine from here http://secure.cartsvr.net/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=2239345. I like the look of them. I believe that the are a silver color and with the right lighting they reflect to look a little gold.

I'm gathering matteral for the belt. I found some vinal for sale. woot. Just need to find the right loops and clips.

Best of luck everyone. If you have any questions about where I have gotten my supplies, feel free to ask.

Well I did a silly thing today, I found zippers, and bought them but then decided that I liked the ones on that site better, so if anyone is interested I have some 30" long zippers that are a bit smaller than than the ones on the site but have more accurate zipper pulls, I am willing to sell them to someone if you want them, 12$ for the 3 which is a lot cheaper than getting them online. pm me if you are interested.

When I checked out Joann's, they didn't carry two-way zippers, and because of time restrictions I couldn't go out to lke 59044398 other places and look for them, so I settled with regular one way zippers.. and after putting them in the dress, they look pretty good. I could always fake out everyone and randomly attach a zipper head to the bottom of the zippers somewhere :P

Kairi G

yea JoAnns has poor zipper selection, so I would suggest if possible get them at the site above, those seem good. but unfortunatly not cheap.

I'm so glad you noticed the gold and silver zipper thing too! I was really wondering about that..
In most pictures, it just looks silver. But in the screenshots, it looks gold and silver. I'm wondering if it's the lighting? Not sure. As soon as I find silver zippers, I wanted to try and add the gold. I heard spray paint wouldn't work. XDD I had no luck finding silver zippers so far.
Also for the shoes...I used black converse... x__x Pink or white would be so much easier. I had to keep recoating the black converse with fabric paint to get it to the right color. *sorry late response* ^^

the zippers are silver the lighting must have reflected some gold. Our fabric shop sold identical zippers to Kairi's but they were too expensive like $7 each and only 51cm so i went with a different type.

I've got a question on the bag(s) on Kairi's side. I've seen pics of Kairi with only one bag on her left side but I see people putting on two bags, one on each side. Does she have two bags during some pics or am I just (kinda) going crazy? I'd like to figure this out before I have to start making a second bag (maybe?).

Do any of you have an idea on how to make her bag?
I was actually making a small black bag (like a Gothic Lolita one). Then I saw that Kairi has a small black bag and I just decided to shorten the width (it would have been sticking out 5 inches). The dimensions I have for my bag are:
Length: 9 in
width: 2 in
height: 8 in
That's just the bag w/o the flap. The flap I made is 9 by 8 in, but because there's little covering the body of the bag, after I sewed it to the back piece, I pinned it about 2 in above where I sewed.
I don't know if you understood what I just said, I'll try to put up pics if my camera will start working again. Grrr..

Hmm that sounds good, can I steal your dimensions? xD

And I decided to get the thick type of double sided interfacing to put on the inside of the bag.. just so it keeps its shape and all, and I wasn't sure if that was an ok idea or not.. >.>

Lady Subaru

Kairi G
02-10-2006, 10:59 AM
using interfacing in the bag is not a bad idea, the other thing you could do, if you do not want it all to be too stiff would be cut out a rectangle of poster board weight cardboard and put it in the bottom of the bag for some shape. I am using a heavier weight fabric so that might be all that is needed for mine.

I like the cardboard idea, but the material I'm using is the same stuff as what I'm using for my hood and belt, so I'll just end up putting the interfacing in anyway, because my material is somewhat thin. Thicker than the pink of my dress, but thin xD

I'm using the same black material I used with the bag for the belt and straps too. The material I used it stretchy but I don't think I'll be using the interfacing. Pics will be coming soon, hopefully.....

The second one is closer to what her hair is already. I'm not getting a wig because by this summer it'll be long enough, I'm just going to a really good stylist and getting it cut in March so it'll be fine (just probably another redye and quick trim) for Houkocon in June.

Yea I forgot about that wig, thank you for the suggestion. Im glad to know that it worked out for you. In the past I have just used my own hair for costumes like this one where I could style it, but currently my hair is short and black, so no chance it will be long enough.

I now have everything on the costume finished except for cutting my wig and cutting the pattern in the top of the white.. and that's where I'm stuck. I know sort of what the pattern looks like, but I don't have a good enough picture to use for reference to make a stencil for a pattern for. So does anyone have high resolution pictures of her pattern?

Down by the belt you can kinda see it.

Kairi G
02-14-2006, 08:59 PM
Oh well that is something that is just likely to happen because of the way the zippers are. I am surprised they actually put that in the animation because its much more realistic. Really, I wouldnt worry about it, its only going to happen probably if you bend over like that or sit.

EDIT: I think I saw what you were talking about on your own dress. If you want to stop that from happening, consider using some medium weight iron on interfacing on your fabric in the area its happening, or along the whole zipper. You shouldnt need much more than a two or 3 inch wide strip and then however long you want to make it, you could interface along the whole zipper if you wanted.

I have a picture of my belt. Let me resize it so I can post it. I got my snaps at walmart. It comes in a set of 8 with a kit. I had to buy three sets because I botched a few of my snaps. I used 2 inch D rings. I could find square rings. I'll most likly keep an eye out for them but d rings will work for the time being.

:/ well unfortunately I got them at a Trim and Findings store here in the NYC Garment district.

If it makes you feel better I couldn't find the square kind either :/

Ok, I know there are currently more high res screencaps of Kairi's shoes, but I've already painted the shoes and what not. I used the darkish pink converse, and used white acrylic paint, and the color came out a pale pink. I know some people (like Katie Chan) have made theirs purple, and I'm wondering if it's bad that they're pink, and not purple. :/ Katsucon is in a couple of days now and I can't really do anything to fix the color.

Also, Katie Chan, how did you get your shoes to come out such a solid color? Or did you buy them that way? :D

mewillusion

I actually think the color is so light a pink color it looks very light purple.... but that's my opinion.

RavensFyre
02-15-2006, 08:58 PM

Oh and also, should I still cut the white pattern that's in her front into the back of her dress too? The scallop pattern I mean (if that's even what it's called xD), because in many screenshots I've seen her dress with no white in the back at all.

Kairi G
02-15-2006, 10:36 PM
I honestly see the shoes as being just a very light pink, or if anything else white. Purple I do not think would go as well. I am probably going to do a very light pink. Who knows what their original intention was, I mean there are already some inconsistancies that have popped up. Oh sigh... silly game designers :P

General_Beatrix
02-16-2006, 12:19 AM
Just a quick note on the shoes, they're actually lavender/purple, about the same color as the ribbon on her bag. It's just more subtle in the fmvs than it is in the game. They look pink in the official cg picture (the one with the entire cast) because of the evening lighting, also why her zippers look gold in some spots too, I guess. ^^; But I agree the having them purple doesnt go so well with the rest of the outfit. >.<

RavensFyre
02-16-2006, 03:59 PM
Damn inconsistency xDD

My shoes are already a pale pink, so I can't do anything about the color, but I think either way, purple or pink, they're still going to be Kairi's shoes.

Kairi G
02-16-2006, 04:14 PM
OH WELL NOW, If the ribbon on the bag is purple and the shoes are purple then it ties in better to the costume, and thats ok. I think I will do them purple. See I was mostly bothered by the fact that nothing else on the whole outfit was purple... but if the ribbon is, I am ok with it. Yea I know I am strange :P

Its called Galaxy Trimming,It is on 38th or 39th street ( I cannot remember which) between 7th and 8th. There are lots of stores in that area which are more likely to have this kind of thing. Another good one is Steinlauf and Stoller, which I know is on 39th St. Galaxy has the zippers too, but i didnt like the zipper pulls that were on their zippers. They will cut and alter zippers though for a small charge if you need them shortened or something.

As for progress, my zippers arrived today and I started basting them for a fitting. I am really glad I went with these zippers, they really are just the perfect size :D Thanks Katie-chan for the link!

Mewillusion, I hate to tell you this but you are most likely going to have to order them online unless you can find a store that specializes in metal notions like zippers and findings.

mewillusion - If it comes down to it, I have three 28" double pull zippers that I'm trying to get rid of :3 I had to go to a fabric warehouse to find them. I got lucky, though. Your welcome Kairi G. Your will most likly look better then mine because you are in most case, taller then I. I should have almost gotten mine re-sized but that would hae been $ 4 a zipper. I do love the zippers. Wish the top and bottem pulls looked the same but it all good.

Yea as I mentioned before, I do also have 3 that i could get rid of, but the zipper itself isnt as wide. I could take a picture of them if you're interested and want to see what they look like.

Yea I actually lenghtened the pattern in the back because 26" long on me is fairly short, but I didnt want to be exposed by just slightly bending over! :P

Has anyone got their zippers from Stan's Sewing Sluppies? I don't know if my order went through or what... and was wondering if someone could help me to tell if it did or not. I filled out all my info and stuff, paid for it, but the thing is it didn't give me the price for shipping and handling, so yeah @.@;;... after clicking the button to send order... it gave me a button to see how it went and it showed nothing different in my cart page.

Hm, I dont really remember, I suggest waiting a few days and if it doesnt arrive contact them. It took a while for me to get mine, i think probably 5 days... So if you dont get anything within a week i would say it probably didnt go through

Edit:
I finally have a progress picture on this. The zippers are still only basted on, and it isnt hemmed, but I did the fitting, side seams, center back seam and the facings. I used flat-felled seams (like what is down the leg on jeans) on the side seams and back seams. it looks great and very clean. :D

Kairi G
02-26-2006, 02:03 PM
yea, usually paint will chip and crack on shoes, at the places where they bend the most. If you can find white ones and dye them that wouldnt happen, but you would still have to paint over the converse symbol if you had actual converses. Spray Paint might work better on the shoes, but I havent tried it on canvas shoes ever.

Fabric paint seems to work well on my converse. Not on the bottom though, just around the shoe. The paint on the bottom will most likely come off. Fabric paint could be an option? ^^

Kairi G
03-19-2006, 02:50 PM
fabric paint would probably be best option for the canvas portion, and for the rubber sole, sharpie will stay on the rubber better than paint. So that is an idea...

Well for zippers its easiest to sew them in using a zipper foot for your machine, if you dont have one you can still use a machine, you just will have to go very slowly and carefully in sewing. I basted them in place first so I wouldnt have to worry about sewing over pins or anything like that.
I also used a twill, It really is the best material because it is the right weight without being too heavy or stiff. Its very nice to sew and press too :D

Oh wow...I just started on my Kairi today...and my dressform is giving me problems because of it. Quick question, do you think the zippers would give extra width to the dress? (coz I kinda need it) or with folding the seams back would that just not help at all and reduce width either way? I'll need it for my dressform but not me I guess. Also, what length zippers should I get? My friend advised 25 inch but hm :P It's just giving me trouble

(eww I sound like a noob...i hate that)

Kairi G
03-26-2006, 10:34 AM
well measure the metal portion of your zipper, and since there are 3 zippers multiply it by 3, that much will be added into the final width of the dress. Also, a tip if you are having problems with fit, leave an 1'' of seam allowance on the side seams so you can let it out if you need to. I made my dress 26" long and a little longer in the back for more coverage. :P

And I'm another whose jumping in to do Kairi's pink dress. I don't plan on starting until I finish up Dagger, but I have started looking around for pink twill. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding it locally. I did manage to find some pink twill at Jo-Ann's, but it was very lightweight and there was only about half a yard left... (I guess everyone jumped for it. x.x) I've also looked around the internet, but haven't really found any there either. Would dyeing white twill be a better option or am I missing some somewhere? Dyeing just makes me nervous cause I haven't really done it before and I would hate to get the color off in the final product.

For my Mamimi skirt, I painted the stripes on, and I did it after I sewed it. It made it a lot easier to line the stripes up. I just used regular acrylic paint, but I'd recommend mixing in some fabric/textile medium first. It makes it adhere better.

:> Jumping on the bandwagon here, I'm another one planning on making a pink Kairi outfit. :x Unfortunately, I won't be going home from college this summer due to a summer job, so I'll end up sewing things by hand. >_O Anyone have recommendations of cloth material for the pink part that's soft enough for needles to pierce? It looks very wrinkle-proof (though that may be due to the CG rendering effect), but I wouldn't be able to use any material that's too thick. ;; But things like cotton would just be too thin. :< Addtionally, would it look bad if I put the zippers on top of the cloth for the side zippers? >_> If I do end up using thick material, extra sewing/cutting would be required, and I'm not exactly a proficient with making dress-like outfits. I'm afraid I'll be making things too small. (Oh god how is the pink going to stay on?! D: Unless it's made very form-fitting?)

As for hair, is anyone planning on getting their own hair cut and dyed? :D; Or am I the only one silly enough to do that? :x I just think I'd like the way my own hair falls better than a wig.

Finally, anyone have reference pictures for Kairi's keyblade? :D; I just remember it being extremely flowery and not very clear, as it was a realtime in game shot. ;; Thanks~ :D

The pattern I bought to use for my dress was New Look 6468... It is a little long, but that's easily fixed. There are two seams where the two side zippers are supposed to be, so I figured that would make it easier to construct.

OMFG I HAVE BEEN TRYING SO HARD TO FIND A GOOD PATTERN FOR THIS COS...I know it's going to be totally overdone nowadays (but its so cool! and there are one or two not-so-great ones) and the pattern you used I own o.o

...I feel silly....

but hey! bc of this thread there will be many-a-good cosplay which makes people happyful ^____^

yay cosplay and happyfulness ^_____^~<333

EDIT:

is anyone noting the little hole thingers in the sides of the zippers? they look like they could be shoelace holes or whatever..little metal circle things...and I was wondering HOW THE MONKEY you do those. if you DO do those.

Wow~ <3 I'm so glad I've found this thread. It's proving to be very useful ^^! And I have to say I love the cosplays that I've seen so far :D I hope mine can turn out half as good ^^; *Is still pretty new to cosplay* I'm short on budget this year because of my AC Tifa costume, but I plan to make the pink dress next year :)

I figure it would be best to ask here (because everyone has been so helpful!), but I'm going to attempt the school uniform Kairi this year, and I was wondering if anyone has a high res. screen shot of the plaid pattern on her skirt? Also, Selphie's uniform is actually like.. a t-shirt cut for her sleeves. Is Kairi's a sleeveless blouse or is just just rolled up? ^^;

I believe her sleeves are just rolled up, since they seem to form a ridge in some pictures.

Wow, this thread has been super helpful....I'm attempted to make the pink zipper dress....and this is my first time ever at cosplay >.<

I bought the pink Converse shoes (after much inner debate over dying them or leaving them pink....I'm just going to go with the pink) but other than that I'm still in the planning stage. I definitely want it done by September for Dragon*Con in Atlanta, but if I can get it done earlier I might do a test drive at an anime con :)

Still trying to decide which pattern I'm going to use, and I have to teach myself to sew....yeah, sounds kinda hopeless eh? XD

Oh hey I have that one! (used it for another cosplay last year XD) Okay...now to see how it works. Yeah...I was considering that and was thinking of how to modify it to work so hmmmm :D

Pretty easy to modify... I used that pattern for the undershirt/dress... and the pink dress. The middle zipper is the easiest one to put in, just fold the dress in half, iron, then unfold and cut down the middle. The side zippers I just lined the zippers through the dart. Luckily with all the zippers on the front, you don't need a zipper on the back ^^;.

Chibi Plush Toy
04-23-2006, 10:42 PM
Yeah, but with the darts, I'm trying out to figure *where* exactly to cut through, so I'm using the white dress as a sort of prototype for the actual pink dress. Any possibility Walmart has good zippers for this?

Jen-neko

Chibi Plush Toy -- I work at Wal-mart (in fabrics, ironically :P), and, well, not really... Our walmart has two-way zippers, but they're really kinda crappy and only come in black/brown/navy polyester...I'd try to buy online or get them from a specialty store or something (I got some really nice ones from a fabric outlet..).

Kairi G

I cut the pattern very accurately

it is fraying////anything I can do x.x
I had that problem with my kairi costume too. If you have a problem you can either use a lot of clear nailpolish or you can buy a tube of "FrayCheck" or some equivilent of a fray stop liquid.

Okay for the white undershirt/dress thing. I realize there's a little wavy pattern at the top of it. With lining for my dress being sewn on (well, not yet) do I just have to cut out the design and not use lining or what? It's a pretty thin fabric, not that great but it works. I was thinking of using lace for that edging but hm...would it look all right? It's not like PUFFY lace it's just embroidery lace (applique?)

Kairi G
05-04-2006, 04:22 PM
At this point your best bet would be to leave the lining intact and just add a scalloped lace.

hey, i was wondering if anyone has attempted her school uniform, and where they found a good fabric, because i have been searching forever and still havent found the perfect one.

I just took blue Kona cotton from Joann's and Heat n' bonded 3/8 wide ribbon into the pattern before I sewed the pieces. It stiffens up the skirt a bit, but it helps it not to wrinkle :) I'm awful at painting, so this was a perfect alternative XD
I attached a couple pictures of my skirt.

TwistedFates

I will be attempting the skirt soon, after all the finals and stuff. My sister is a fashion designer and I know that silk is very easy to dye. There's this type of liquid that can prevent the dye from going past where it should. It would take a very long time, but it could work.

I'll personally will just go to the G Street nearby. They have an ENORMOUS selection.

thanks! ^_^

Woo~ Popular costume!
Well im ALSO doing the ever-so-popular pink dress =D
For my costume i found some pink denim-like fabric, although its not quite as thick, so i still plan to put some liner because it looks like the dress is fairly stiff.
As for the white under-shirt part i purchased... well i dont even know what it is, but its white, not think, and very soft <3 And i plan to find some lace that is in the same shape as the top of that part, because i think it will look prettier than just cutting it out.
For the hood i bought some black stretchy fabric, kind of like a light sweat-shirt type fabric, minus the fluffy-ness thats usually on the inside of that. (Sorry for the very untechnical terms here! haha).
The belt i plan to use this woven type stuff that i found. I dont know what it is called but its often found on backpacks? o_O You know that like 1.5-2" thick woven-like stuff?? come onn~
And as for the bag im undecided as to what to use thus far.
For the Zippers etc... i managed to find some 26" HUGE silver zippers on grey trim at this vintage sewing notions store!! I bought the little silver eyelet rings for the details on the top of the dress. And managed to find some nice clips for on the belt. Also, although ive seen some square-like peices i could use to attach them to, i havent found any that i thought were wide enough for the belt. So im still in search of that.
I'm not using a store-boughten pattern for the costume, but it is very simple actually! So dont worry if you cant find one. Also i plan to put a seam in the back of the dress instead of side-seams, dunno what anyone else used for that. But i found it would be easier to make the dress fitted this way, and not looking like all the seams etc were to the front of the costume... and in some of the screenshots it looks as if there is a small crease or something along the back of the dress... so i thought itd be appropraite!
As for shoes, i plan to make mine a pale pinky-purple color. Nothing like the bright purple used in the actual game-play though =P I plan to probably be painting them unless i find some that i really like that is ;>_>

But anyway... im so glad that i found this thread! =D

Oh, wow! Alot of people are doing Kairi, rofl. And so am I! KH2 Kairi pink dress is SO adorable. Thanks for all the reference pictures and tips ^o^ I'm currently in the process of making the outfit right now.

But.. it's the zipper that really irks me. I've got patterns for the rest of the outfit, it's just that zipper! My mom absolutely refuses to order online; so we have to find it a Jo*Ann's or something (Walmart, maybe?). Anyone have anymore tips about this zipper issue? D'ya guys have any alternate ideas on how to get this zipper? =/

I saw a few 28" double ended large silver zippers at Walmart once o_o
so you might find some luck there.
But i opted for some ultra huge ones from the vintage notions store xD
Dont ask why they would have them there, i dont know~

Hmm so im sure you could find those at Walmart maybe.
But if not at some other random sewing store i saw that they were selling the zipper track on a roll. Like you measure how much you want out and they give you it, and then you just buy the pulls and such. You could try to find that maybe?

P.S. How many people just cut out the design on the top of the white undershirt and how many bought lace that mimiced the shape?

Its probably just a interlock or jersey knit, cotton or polyester most likely. that would work, I just always saw the fabric as being a little stiffer because of the zippers, generally you wouldnt put such heavy zippers on a light fabric like that.

thats good, Im glad my textile class came in useful :P I do like the look your dress has, how its really nice and tight. 05-18-2006, 12:36 PM
Personally im not gonna cut out hte pattern, im thinking if i find the right shape of lace ill be happier with just that
But then again thats my opinion.

As for my fabric i made it REALLY stiff... like hardcore denim stiff... but my zippers are MASSIVE (think around 3/4 of an inch wide). Anyone thinking that was a bad idea? D=
Because im kinda worried... or i should say unsure at this point. So far the middle zipper and the two side peices are the only thing sewn together. But that part turned out really nicely. I guess im just worried about how it will fit in the end, not being stretchy and all... ;>_>

Kairi G
05-18-2006, 03:35 PM
you could buy scalloped eyelet, as long as it didnt have too many eyelets, for the top. And as for the stretch issue, if you shape and fit the dress you shouldnt need it to stretch much.

cherry_starr
05-18-2006, 04:24 PM
Yeah, the dress is planned to be made really nice and fitted. I'm fairly confident in saying that if i attempted my zippers on a light fabric it would just go wavy along the zippers, bleh!

Ah, quick question for everyone here: how did you handle the scallops on her top? I'm redoing my own, because I don't like them. What's a good fabric to use so that you could cut them out and it wouldn't fray...?

I have a problem with that too. I cut out my pattern and my fabric is fraying badly and the fray check won't work on it. I tried polyester/lycra and that frayed easily too...ugh...

How would an alternate-color (Like, blue, or black) version of Kairi's outfit be looked upon in the cosplaying community? I want to cosplay her, but I hate pink, and its hard to find good shots of her in her school uniform.

That sounds cute since nobody has ever made it before. It'll be unique ^^ If you need reference pics of her school uniform, here's some:

plywood, scroll-saw and a fatass dowl for me ^_^

it'll be heavy, but it gives me an exuse to use power tools *drools* (mmm... power tools) my Dad and I like tools so much that we buy them before we have a reson for getting them, so we end up makeing bird houses or something to justify the purches.

What particular scenes are you looking for, because I can post some screencaps online.

Btw, what length of zipper is everyone using? I picked up some 24" but Im worried that they are too short.

I used 24". They worked just fine, and they weren't too short at all.

My zippers were 26". But i guess it kind of depends on your height and how short or long you want it to be in the end.

I'm looking for ref. screens for Kairi and screens of Riku because he's soooo smexy :toothy:

My Zippers are 27" and two-way but they're grey and not silver (I have some crome moddle paint that might work if I use the right kind of sealant, and I'll probably sharpie the cloth part)

I used 22 in. for the middle and 24 in. for the sides. btw, what did everybody use for the shoe laces? I used thin ribbons and it won't stay up on my ankle...ugh. any suggestions to make it stay up? I remember somebody telling me elastics but I'm still not sure...

Would anyone really care and attempt to kick me if I couldn't find two-way zippers? I'm having a hard time, found some good sites, but ordering online confuses the heck outta me.

it would probably be easier if you could just get them online...

thats where I got mine, and they are very good, and they ship fairly fast. I would trust using an online store before I would trust some random person on the forums :P

I started off using ribbons too and had the same exact problem...and even if you tie it tight it cuts off circulation. o_o...so My next try is going to be for black elastic, and if that doesn't work, i'm going for black shoes laces. Best of luck!

And by the way - Mine are definatly not two way zippers, but you know what....I don't care..o_o I worked darn hard on this costume and I think it's fine the way it is...tiny details or not. I ended up using big thick jacket zippers anyway. :3

My zippers were 26''~ actually, someone here suggested for me to buy them @ walmart xD smart idea! As for Kairi's laces, I just snatched some black laces off one of my black van's shoes >O< rofl ghetto but it works, kinda.. it still falls off.

Question! How did everyone go about with the shoes? Mine are pink, rofl, but I want to dye them lavender with black? Any suggestions on how to do it??

I should try elastics also~ Ahh I hope it works! If not, I'm going to have to glue the ribbon to my skin -_-;; Yay for non-two way zippers! Yep, as long as we're satisfied with our costumes, that's all that counts ^^ Even if I had two-way zippers, redoing that costume...I don't even want to think about it. I thought I was going to die when I was sewing those.

Shoe laces? I can't believe I never thought of that before >.<;;

I bought purple converses (they were the only one's on clearance xD) and painted it with lavender and black acrylic paint. The black paint keeps chipping but the lavender paint on the shoe actually doesn't crack. I'm not sure about dyeing shoes but you could also try fabric paint ^^
