I thought I'd create a new thread that could be used as a "general purpose" stage for planning random events and get-togethers (like the holiday gatherings, and that hotel party we had just before New Year's). That way we don't end up doing things like planning the hotel party in the holiday gathering thread, or planning a bowling event in the hotel party thread ;-) Hopefully that'll also reduce "thread clutter" so that we don't need a new thread for everything. We can just use this thread for whatever we're all trying to put together next.

mgperkow

OK, to start this thread off, it seems like we're trying to get a bowling outing together around Valentine's Day. From a cursory glance over the hotel party thread, I didn't see any specific places that anyone had suggested, unless I missed something...

Just a suggestion for a place, Taylor Lanes in Taylor is one of the best bowling alleys I've been to. They host the PBA there, it's a LARGE alley with a TON of lanes. The only thing about it is that it's in Taylor, which is downriver.

But that's where I go normally.

Well, it's a bit of a hike for some of us, but then so is just about every event that the group tries to organize!

Oh, and I mentioned in my last post that it seemed like we were trying to plan the event for Valentine's Day. I think I was mistaken. If I recall the posts in the other thread correctly, I think we were thinking about some day over the weekend before Valentine's Day, so that it would be easier for more of us to come (which, if you ask me, is an excellent idea).

Laser tag might be a problem for some of us. You typically have to wear sensors and a little gear when playing laser tag, and some of us might not be able to wear that over our costumes.

One thing to keep in mind about Taylor Lanes is they have a lot of league bowling, which might interfer with planning times and such.

Heh really. Those are great but very bold costumes!

Somehow as much fun as I'd think it'd be to play wearing Link, I know it'd again, be so easily spotted. Aside from that, armor-free of course ^_~. Well, hmm.. on the other hand I could always wear the shield and reflect lasers back at people shooting me :) You getting a negative score = I win!

mgperkow

No, you can't hit yourself. Each "laser" is coded to pair with the sensors of its owner. They won't register a hit from your own gun's pulse.

mgperkow

I think we were a bit discouraged from that idea by the fact that some of us may not be able to wear laser tag gear over our costumes. We could laser tag anyway, but those of us with bulky costumes wouldn't be able to wear them.

Countess Lenore

As far as bowling alleys go, we probably don't want to go to Taylor Lanes. On Fridays, opening bowling doesn't start until after 10 pm and Saturdays, it doesn't start until after midnight at the earliest. I was also told that because of league bowling, the house can get nasty sometimes with open bowlers if they aren't on their "best behavior" *bleh*

LOL! Strip cosplay! ;-) Heh, it sounds funny in theory, but then... heh, might just be a little scary ;-)

Anyway, seriously, I think bowling is probably our best bet at the moment, provided we can find a good place to bowl where all of us rowdy people hanging around and bowling in our costumes won't bother people.

Uchihacest69
01-15-2006, 10:39 AM
well, i don't know about most people that are still in school here but, my school has a break 20-24. I always remembering my mid-winter break right aroung valentines day. Seeing as how there is usually league bowling on weekends, as people have said, we would most likely have to go on a week day.

Countess Lenore
01-15-2006, 11:05 AM

OK folks, let's focus here! ;-) So if we are still trying to go bowling sometime, and we can't go on the weekend before Valentine's Day because of league bowling, and most of us can't go on a weekday, then the only choice seems to be a different weekend.

Uchihacest69
01-15-2006, 04:35 PM
It's not just Valentines day weekend. Me and my mom wanted to go bowling this weekend and went to three different bowling alleys and they all had league bowling till around 12. It would be very nice of Countess Lenore to go through her many phonebooks and possibly find out which alleys don't have leagues. I'll look some up too. around what area were you guys thinking of?

SheikahPrincess

I think we were trying Novi because it's right in the middle of everyone.

mgperkow

OK, then the first thing we should do is identify where we can bowl (on a weekend). Then we can find a weekend that works for everyone.

Countess Lenore
01-16-2006, 10:52 AM
Sorry for double posting, but here's the info for Novi Bowl:

Open bowling starts at 9 am on Friday and Saturdays. It costs $3.48 per bowler, per game and $2.95 to rent a pair of shoes. Since we'll probably be a large party, we'll want to make sure we reserve the lanes ahead of time and they require a $25 deposit to make sure the lanes will be availible when we get there (and I can reserve the lanes if you need me too.) They don't have a problem with large parties, so long as we don't act like total fools (no trashing the place or throwing bowling balls at each other, stuff like that.)

If this place sounds good to everyone, we'll want to choose a date and get a rough count of how many people will be going so we'll know how many lanes to reserve.

mgperkow
01-16-2006, 11:07 AM
Open bowling all day on those days? That would be perfect in that case. So who can make it for some cosplay bowling on a currently indeterminate Friday evening or Saturday? You guys can put me down, and probably Maria and Tom as well.

ngsilver
01-16-2006, 12:50 PM
Depending on how many people are going it may be cheaper to simply rent lanes rather then buying games. Often times with 3 people or more, renting a lane and getting in 2 games will give you you're monies worth, so the more people, the cheaper a game would be. (all dependant on the lanes of course and amount of people going, and number of lanes rented)

I would look into prices for renting a lane for an hour during the times/days we'd be wanting to go. Which may have been discused and I might have missed it.

mgperkow

mgperkow
01-16-2006, 03:37 PM
Sounds like we can cosplay for this. There doesn't seem to be any reason why not. Not like we'd be causing a problem at the place simply by wearing costumes. We just have to behave ourselves!

SheikahPrincess
01-16-2006, 03:38 PM

Countess Lenore
01-16-2006, 03:46 PM
I'm sure there'll be no problem with us cosplay, just as long as we don't give them a reason to be pissed-off or kick us out or something.

I plan on reserving the lanes sometime Friday (unless it's going to take long for us to figure out about how many people will be going.) When I call, I'll ask about prices for lanes per hour, like ngsilver suggested.

mgperkow
01-16-2006, 04:13 PM

Ack! Yeah whoops... Forgot about that as I'm so used to wearing boots, but I'm sure that'd really scuff up the lane floor. Although I can easily wear an un-filled sheath, truthfully I have to wonder how the shield if worn would affect my game. Again if we're just talking basics, that's understandable and fine by me.

*sighs* Why do I somehow see my Mom not taking this idea well?

Sala
01-16-2006, 04:32 PM
Another thought about bowling: you have to wear rental shoes, which probably don't match ANY costume in existence. Not to mention they're fugly.

Lazer tag is cool, but it is in the dark. I think we'd be trying to show off our costumes, not hide them.

Miniature golf is a great idea, but probably something for warmer weather...

And in the immortal words of Alan Rickman:
"Well, I say we get drunk, because I'm all out of ideas"

selaphri
01-16-2006, 05:53 PM
bowling with a shield might be... hard.... o.o

i know of one place that has indoor minigolf, but it's in the dark (glow golf at great lakes crossing). :P

back on topic... do we have a specific day that we're thinking about (if'n y'all don't mind a random forum lurker showing up)? i need to check my work schedule, as it's kind of erratic. :P

what'll everyone be thinking of wearing to bowling? :3

OK, so for the sake of clarity, let me try to summarize where we seem to be so far...

We're trying to plan a cosplay event for Friday, February 3rd, in the late afternoon-early evening range. At the moment, we're trying to make it a bowling trip (in cosplay). So far the specific bowling alley we're looking at is

Novi Bowl
21700 Novi Road
Novi, MI 48375-4702
248/348-9120

We're considering renting lanes rather than buying individual games if it turns out to be more cost-effective. That, of course, depends on how many people are going, and how long we intend to spend bowlling there (I'm assuming an hour or two). If we're only bowling for an hour or two, we could also consider eating somewhere for dinner before or after we go bowling.

If all of this sounds fine to everyone, then the next thing we need to know is how many people are going. That way we can figure out how many lanes (or individual games) we'll need to buy (obviously everyone who goes along for this trip and chooses to bowl will be expected to contribute toward the cost). To start off, I'm planning to come, and I think I'm bringing three other people (Maria, Tom, and Emily). I plan to bowl, and as far as I know, all three of them will play as well.

The-Real-Link
01-18-2006, 02:53 PM
Another thought: Does anyone know if Novi Lanes has an inhouse restaurant that has pizza or breadsticks we can order from? Although it may not be cheaper than going out to eat, it probably would save a little confusion on where to go and covering bills. Atleast with the old Milford Lanes, they had a small restaurant aside from their bar that could be used for food orders.

I have to agree with Doug there...Also, count me in for going! My father has agreed to taking me unless someone offers to drive me...LoL

Let's please try to get a general head count so I can reserve the lanes in the next couple days. I will add asking about food to my list of things to ask about I call. Right now, it seems like only about 8 of us are planning to go and if that's the case, I'm just going to reserve the lanes and not deal with renting them by the hour (it'll just be easier for me and on my poor credit card.) I will pay the $25 reservation fee, but if it's just the few of us, I'd really appriciate it if everyone pitched in a bit.

...Haku? *thinks* That could be a possiblity...*laughs*

I don't think there's a problem with asking everyone to pitch in. Most of us are used to going to cons and splitting the cost for everything with other people. If it turns out they don't serve food there themselves, you should find out whether they'd mind us bringing food. We could order pizza or something. (Unless they have some kind of small restaurant.)

For the reservation fee, I'm only going to ask $2.50 per person (right now, I've counted nine of us *including myself* that are interested in going, and that works out to about $2.50) I won't really know until tomorrow how much individual costs will be, since I'm not sure if we'll be renting the lanes by the hour or not.

Right now, I'm going to reserve three lanes, unless for some reason, you all think I should reserve more.

You can fit 4 people per lane. That means 12 people is our limit, unless we get more lanes. Wait just a tad longer to see what the people haven't responded want to do. That's my suggestion...

FlyingElf
01-20-2006, 12:43 PM
You can put more than 4 on a lane. Usually you can fit up to 6 or so on a lane.

Why do I just think that tights + bowling shoes is really going to crimp my style? Ah I know! I could just wear boots, stand completely off the lanes and bowl down the walkway as well. Sure it'd add 10-12 feet but if it's a straight shot, who cares? Ok, j/k on that.

Actually, we're currently planning to go to Novi Bowl. Aside from the fact that we now already have a reservation there, we chose it because it wasn't far too out of the way for most of us and because it was one of the few places we could find where we wouldn't be displaced or delayed indefinitely by league bowling on a Friday night.

mgperkow

They have a website (http://www.novibowl.com). It doesn't mention their hours, but we could get in contact with them to find out. The hours for their bar/restaurant (whatever it is) seem to indicate that the restaurant is open until around 11 PM normally. So the whole place must be open at least that late, or later.

When i went bowling after Homecoming, Prom, and Winter Formal we went to three different alleys and stayed there till about 1am. i would think that since it's a weekend they don't want to kick people out that early. And i know that we already talked about that resturant and eveything but, do we need a couple cases of soda or snacks or anything? Just something to munch on if you're not hungry for a full meal? >.> are you allowed to bring outside food in a bowling alley?

SheikahPrincess

Ya can't take in food. The bowling alleys are really strict about that kind of stuff. I would expect them to have a snack machine in there.

selaphri
01-31-2006, 03:46 PM
ok, here's a traffic heads up for all of you from my coworker whose mother works at wayne county city hall.... i dunno if any of you heard of it already on the news because i don't watch tv. ^^;

Michigan will launch a 30-day speeding ticket frenzy. The state estimates that 9 million dollars will be generated in speeding tickets. 1 million will go to pay state troopers overtime. There will be 50 state troopers on duty at all times patrolling the 6 main intersections and highways.

I-75 north and south
I-94 (from Ann Arbor to Port Huron)
entire length of I-696
I-275 north and south
M-10 Lodge Fwy
I-96 from Detroit West to M-14

Now, 5 mph above the limit can justify a ticket and every state trooper is supposed to pull a car over and write a ticket every 10 minutes. They have issued 30 brand new unmarked Crown Victoria cruisers and they are bringing all their part timers on full time. If you work anywhere in the Detroit Metropolitan area, you must take one of there interstates, routes, or parkways. It's up to you how fast you are doing when they do.

Wear your seat belt, nothing hanging from the rear view mirror, do the speed limit (not a mile over) use cruise control if you have it, no cracks in your windshield, use your turn signals.

soooo if you're driving from a long distance to the bowling alley in costume, and you're not out to get a weird look from a police officer, drive safely! ^^

SheikahPrincess
01-31-2006, 04:23 PM

Just so everyone can kind of plan on how much money to bring this Friday, here's how I kind of devided it

It turns out the bowling alley gets kinda stupid after 8:30, so instead of being able to pay per game, we're paying per hour, per alley which is $24, but there are online coupons for half-off the second hour (but you can only use one per visit, per alley, don't worry, I'll be printing out a few to make sure that each alley will get one. We may want to consider only bowling for two hours.) Don't forget about the $2.95 charge to rent shoes and I'm still asking that everyone puts in about $2.00 to help me pay for the reservation fee.

So, if there is three people to a lane, it'll probably cost everyone about $18.00 or if there is four people to lane it'll probably cost about $15.00. I hope this makes sense.

I think this is stressing me out more than it should (and I don't need anymore stress!!!!!*explodes*)

ah, i couldn't remember the name of that site (snopes) and i thought it might have been one of these random emails.

my coworker did say that her mom went to a meeting about it at work, so i thought it might have been true, though, so i thought better safe than sorry. maybe they just all got the email and had a meeting about it to try to figure it out. oh well. ::shrugs::

I've had a few people I know confirm the rumors as that say they have relatives in the police departments that are booked for the weekend. Actually even if they did turn out to not be true, I'd still imagine that security is going to be insane throughout the city simply because of the scale of the Super Bowl.

mgperkow
02-03-2006, 05:52 AM
Well, obviously they're going to go nuts on security for Super Bowl weekend. And I can see them taking the opportunity to try to keep the roads safer at the same time (especially since there are probably lots of important out-of-town guests to worry about). But this month-long ticket craziness... I'm pretty sure that must be an exaggeration in some degree.

Countess Lenore
02-03-2006, 08:39 AM
I have a pretty good feeling that the rumor is false. I usually drive 275 and 94 (around Ann Arbor) everyday and I haven't seen more cops out than usual (maybe less.) There have been lots of people on campus saying that this is false, so I wouldn't worry too much.

It was GREAT having everyone there that could come! Wow... It's difficult to put this gathering into words except to say that everyone had a blast! First off because even I know I did - a lot - of photography, thanks to everyone to stomached it ^^.

Countess_Lenore - You rocked and DON'T say you can't bowl! I saw you doing pretty well the bulk of the time when you were up, well save that ... backwards rolling ball toss thingy ;)

Selaphri - It was great finally getting to meet both you and your friend! I believe we had seen each other at Youmacon but wow, your FMA cosplay was really nice! Great bowling too! Your friend's Sanzo costume was also really well done, and interesting to watch as the frames went by. Nice chatting even if brief.

Matt, Tom, and Maria - Wonderful seeing you all again, even if it's only been a month. You all bowled well and of course Tom's flashlight and humor kept the night laughter rolling, at times almost literally. Matt, I didn't know you had quite an arm for bowling but at any rate, it was great see you guys!

Nikoali - That's cool that you brought your Takuto. For whatever reason I don't recall seeing it much before... That's nicely done! Thanks for holding my camera a lot and helping with the photos. I still have to see how they turned out on my end but I'm sure we covered everything!

Emily - Your Aeris rocked! What better way to spend a night with some Final Fantasy representation than to watch Aeris bowl? ^^. It was nice chatting and you did pretty well!

Bar1 - Always great chattin' it up man. Yes, not only do you have a strong arm but your fingers are huge (or is it that your hand is just twice as big as mine)?! You did really well and thanks for all the jokes and humor too - it really helped make this night enjoyable.

Finally,

SheikaPrincess - THANKS so much for the ride! Your Mom rocks, not to mention she's a bit more thrilled about cosplay than mine is... You did really well bowling too, and thanks for getting a lot of footage on your camcorder. I'm sure it'll turn out great!

It was greating seeing everyone again, and I'm glad that so many people made it out there! I think we made some friends in the lane next to ours and the other group of "costumers" that came in while we were waiting was pretty darn cool.

I still can't bowl, but I did beat me old high score of 10, so that was exciting and I hope I didn't hurt anyone when I threw the ball backwards (the gremlins made me do it!) Nikolai, I hope you can post that video somewhere, my mom really wants to see it^^

Well, the next Wizzy Wig cosplay day is March 18th, so many of us will probably be meeting up in Ann Arbor for that, of course. So that leaves us with a big stretch of time between now and then to think of something fun to do. Again, the only problems that we may have with laser tag are (possibly) the size of some people's costumes and the fact that most of us who don't have costume problems will probably be pretty visible and clumsy from wearing our costume gear plus the laser tag gear. If we did laser tag, we might have to do it in normal clothes. Some have suggested other trips to Ann Arbor besides the cosplay days, like going to the hands-on museum or something along those lines. When the weather warms up, we can go on a picnic or two. If anyone ever feels like donating their house for an evening, we could also watch anime or a movie at someone's house. Once the weather warms up, it'll be much easier to do things that involve being outside, but I'm sure we can come up with a few things to do until then. Anybody like any of these ideas? Or have any others?

SheikahPrincess
02-04-2006, 01:34 PM
Umm...what about a bon fire? That would be pretty cool. Since the wearther is somewhat weird right now...but I have the feeling that this snow won't last for too long. I can see if my dad and I can rebuild the fire pit in our backyard and have a photoshoot. I think that would be pretty cool.

mgperkow
02-04-2006, 01:54 PM
We could try for that. Probably another thing we shouldn't costume for, though. Most costumes I'm familar with will burn quite well, and if they're also big and bulky, then that could easily lead to catastrophe. But we could still meet up there and enjoy the bon fire. Roast marshmallows. Make s'mores. Hang around. Maybe think up a game or two to play. Anybody up for that?

The-Real-Link
02-04-2006, 01:58 PM
Hmm. All these things sound like good opportunities and for having a lot of fun. We can probably wait for a little more input from the rest of the group before going ahead, although lazer tag has been brought up in the past...

Well....I COULD be nice and offer up my place at the end of the month for movies/anime/snacking/pizza/gaming/whatever....It appears that when I did such shindigs before, people enjoyed it. Just know that I can't have TOO many people over, lest my angsty neighbors complain.

Glad everyone had such a good time!! Jeff and I are all up for the next event. I REALLY wanna do cosplay laser tag. Dude, it would be so cool to be in either my Rally or Gackt cosplay for that ^_^

02-04-2006, 03:55 PM
I'd have to check with my parents, but we probably could use my house if we needed to (we have a TV and carpet and everything^^) But you might want some place bigger.

Although this is probably more of a "when it is warmer" idea, we could go put-put golfing in cosplay. As far as danger to costumes go, I don't think we would have to worry about that too much and there are a million put-put golf places out there.

mgperkow
02-04-2006, 05:51 PM
Yeah, we can probably minigolf in costume. Don't see why not. Laser tag is also a nice idea as well, but I maintain that some of us might not be able to do it depending on the costumes we wear. That might be something we should do in normal dress. I also know that some laser tag places are pretty safety conscious. If they figure that what you're wearing may pose a danger to yourself or something else while you're on the laser tag course (like because it's too bulky) they might not let you participate. If we go laser tagging, it's probably something we shouldn't encourage people to costume for.

Movie night get-together sounds like a nice idea to me. In fact, I don't know how this will go over, but we might even want to plan more than one movie night. Shei, if you're able to host a small gathering, that would be more toward the northeast, which would give some people who can't make it out toward Ann Arbor and Novi a chance to come to an event. Then if Kate or Laura is able to have a separate gathering on a different night, it would cater better to those who live in the direction of Ann Arbor.

Shei Valentine
02-04-2006, 07:18 PM
If Lenore or Katy want to do theirs first, that might be a good idea...looking at my calendar, I'm booked for the next couple weekends. I'm thinking that I'll probably do something around my birthday again (March 26). I know that's the end of the month and after WizzyWig day, but it's still a gathering, just the same. I'll make more of a mention of it as it gets closer and I start plotting...I mean, PLANNING more for it ^^

Heh, I have never ice skated before in my life... I suppose I might try it, but I don't think I'd wear a costume, as I would probably ruin it in the process of skating like Ranma did the first time he tried his form in an ice skating rink ;-)

Ice skating would be fun, but maybe little dangerous for me. I haven't been ice skating in over 10 years, so I suppose it would be an interesting experience.

wow! i made a good suggestion! lol but anyone know where any ice skating rinks are? >.< i hope ice skating is the same as in line skating. the only one i can recall is the one my mom took my sisters to. it was this small frozen over pond near downtown milford. thats why i was kinda thinking a little more towards a roller rink. theres lots of those.

let's see what the almighty google has to say....

http://www.arenamaps.com/arenas/Michigan.htm for ice skating.... i've been to the one in troy once, but that's it.

and there are roller skating rinks all over the place, too:
http://www.skatecentralonline.com/mi/sc-mi_featuredrinks.htm

other suggestions, again, are:
-random party
-movie night
-random hanging out in ann arbor

when it gets warmer:
-mini golf
-picnic

lol i'm sure if i cleaned my house, my mom wouldn't care if i had a party. i have a full queen and a full king bed in my basement thats there when my mom throws parties and everyone is too drunk to go anwhere. if anyone wanted to, they could stay. but then again, i think i'm the third of forth person to offer my house, and other peoples houses might be a little more convenient. >.> and where randomly can you hang out in ann arbor? but a movie night sounds fun to. I'll just have to remember that Grave of the Fireflies is not something to watch on a "fun movie night" as i have already experienced. >.< i think i almost turned emo after that.

OK, it seems to me that we've gathered up quite a few ideas for the next group event. For clarity, I'll list them out here and try to sort through them a little bit:

I've tried to color code the ideas and suggestions I've picked up on so far according to things we might need to think about or consider before trying to plan an event around them.

Blue items are probably best considered winter events (i.e., we should do them before it warms up).
Red items are probably not appropriate for the weather at the moment. When it gets warmer...
Purple items are things that we could probably do anytime now, but possibly not in costume.
Orange items require the donation of someone's house or property for the evening.
For anything else that isn't any color, we could probably just up and do it anytime if enough people wanted to (I'm not trying to vote for any event myself at this point, just trying to point out some obvious concerns for a few of them).
Laser tag
Going to a movie (at a theater) <- Why is this purple? Remember our experience with the Resident Evil movie!
Movie night (at someone's house)
Bon fire (Beware, most costumes burn well!) <- We'd also need a place to have it!
Ice Skating <- This might need to be purple, too, especially for those of us who can't ice skate!
Roller Skating/Blading <- Maybe a little purple? In case some can't roller skate very well either...
Miniature Golf
Trip to the zoo (Detroit or Toledo)
Picnic (could probably also play volleyball or something if we have it in a public park...)
House/apartment party (or just a cozy little get-together)
Trip to Ann Arbor (other than a Wizzy Wig Cosplay Day)

Hope this isn't way too confusing for everyone! Now let's try to narrow it down to a few things that we might want to do in the next few months.

SheikahPrincess
02-06-2006, 01:59 PM
Thats a good way to list ideas. I really like the color coding! *smiles* It seems all the ideas listed sound like alot of fun. Now all we have to do is decide which one we like the best...

Well, as a suggestion, how about ice skating? Although you can do it indoors anytime of the year, it's technically out of season once it warms up. And it's the only thing on the list at the moment that's strongly winter-oriented. Selaphri posted a link to a list of ice skating rinks (http://www.arenamaps.com/arenas/Michigan.htm). I've never ice skated myself, but I think it would be interesting to try.

So what does everyone think? Any takers? Or should we keep thinking?

(Oh, almost forgot... Do some/all ice skating facilities rent the skates? Definitely an important thing to consider...)

bar1scorpio

Yeah, I looked at Link's photos, left a few captions.

So why is it that the only shot in focus on Link's entire camera is of Uchi's arse?

MagiusT
02-06-2006, 06:14 PM
I've skated in countless rinks from that list. All rinks that have public skating rent skates. Heck I don't know of any rink that doesn't. I know atleast 1 rink fom that list doesn't have public skating, and thats Detroit Skating Club. Anyway, it would depend where you want to skate and when. Different rinks have different times also. Some rinks are also warmer than others XD

I don't know as they would let you wear costumes on the ice, as it could be dangerous depending on what it is. However I have skated in costume before, so some are okay. Like, I've skated in my Fuuma costume fom X, and also my Mikado (The guy from the golden pair in the Ranma ice skating eps) would naturally transfer to the ice. So basic costumes like school outfits would be perfectly fine on the ice. Just wear many tights if your in a girl outfit.

Anyway this got long...

i have an old arashi (from x) cosplay that i intended to remake at some point ^^;

sorashi = <3

so, we can go ice skating in costume as long as the costumes are "safe"? ^^;

i just like to push for costumes because i think it would be more fun, but i do realize at times it's quite impractical and possibly dangerous, so i don't want to encourage it too much. ^^;

Countess Lenore
02-06-2006, 08:45 PM
One of my dream costumes has always been Hinoto (from X) Maybe someday......

I think ice skating in costume would be so much fun, but I would have to find something that I wouldn't freeze or kill myself while wearing (due to my extreme lack of ice skating experience.) I'll think about it more when and if the time comes.

mgperkow
02-06-2006, 09:04 PM
Well, I suppose skating in costume could pose a danger to oneself or others, but I was thinking that it's more likely that skating in costume when you have little or no experience ice skating would result in damage to the costume itself. In any case, it might be best for us not to skate in costume. So anyway, if there are people who are interested in going ice skating, then does anyone have any specific suggestions for a rink? Otherwise we'll have to start calling some of the Metro-Detroit-located rinks from that list...

Eh, I'll be at the Dirty show this Friday probably, so I'm out for anything this weekend.

Hey, how about we do something really anime for Valentine's day! The girls in here can make all us guys some chocolates homemade-like! Don't matter to me none if it's just giri-choco... Choco be choco, people.

Anyone else seen Kamikaze Girls yet?

Actually, I think it would be more accurate to describe the custom of women giving chocolate to men on Valentine's Day as a Japanese custom, rather than simply anime. The custom is reflected in anime, since it is part of the culture that created the anime.

(Just being a pain in the ass ;-)

We're currently considering the last two weekends of the month for possible days to go ice skating. So being busy this weekend doesn't necessarily count you out of looking silly on ice skates later on, Ben! ;-)

Troy and Ann Arbor are good locations in terms of proximity to lots of people who might go to the event. One of them might be a good choice.

Nikolai
02-08-2006, 12:07 AM
Well, for a central location, somewhere around Redford/Southfield/Oak Park/Royal Oak might be better. The Southfield Sports Arena (http://www.cityofsouthfield.com/departments/parks/recopp.php) is on that list, and Scott has been to the John Lindell Ice Arena (http://www.ci.royal-oak.mi.us/rec/ice.html) in Royal Oak.

I think the weekend of February 24-26 would be good, since that's halfway between bowling and Wizzywig's cosplay day.

Hmm... I think I need to withdraw my suggestion of Royal Oak for skating. The John Lindell Ice Arena in Royal Oak doesn't have any public skating hours on Saturdays. They have hours on Fridays, but only from 9 PM - 10:20 PM. I don't know if everyone would be happy with that or not, but it seems like a pretty tight schedule. Maybe that's pretty common, but maybe we'd be better off checking around more. It'd be nice to have at least a couple of hours available, and not having to start so late would also be nice.

OK, so here's what we seem to have planned. Ice skating on Saturday, February 25th, from 2:15 - 4:05 PM. The place is the Troy Sports Center at 1819 E. Big Beaver Road in Troy. The hours listed are for open skating, so it doesn't seem that we need to call ahead. It costs $6 per person to skate, and ice skates can be rented for $3. Right now we're also planning to go to dinner somewhere as a group afterward. We hadn't decided where yet.
