I've always heard differing opinions of devices like the GameShark, Code Breaker, and the uber-old Game Genie. Some call them 'Game Enhancing Devices', but let's face it...they're just there for you to cheat with.

So here's the rub. Some say that playing a game with a cheating device ruins the point of playing at all. By giving your character invulnerability, unlimited ammo, or otherwise unfair advantages, you're simply taking the enjoyment out of the game just so you can beat it. Missing the forest for the trees, so to speak.

I personally don't think so. What if you beat the game normally and then go back and replay with the help of the device? Or what if you simply become so stuck on one strong boss and use the device to help you get past him?

I often use a GameShark while playing RPGs, Final Fantasy being a very prominent one. I usually activate a 'No Random Battles' code after I feel my characters are strong enough to get by just on pre-set boss battles. It drives me crazy on wanting to get to the next plot development only to be hindered by getting attacked by cannon-fodder monsters every five steps. Is there anything wrong with that?

Any other opinions? Stories? Death threats?

I only use my game shark for two reasons

1. its got 8 built in memory cards (nice)
2. after I beat the game, I fool around and cheat

I NEVER cheat the first time playing through, unless its a game I will never play again

Honestly, I haven't used any cheating things since the SNES Game Genie. I liked using that because messing with the games was fun! ^_^ I even had some of my codes for Secret of Mana published since they were pretty cool. I loved all the funky stuff you could do with Super Mario World. However, I generally don't feel the need to cheat in any of the games I play these days. If I get stuck, there's always gamefaqs, and if the game is just too hard, then I really don't have an interest in playing it in the first place.

Oh, yeah. I would only use them AFTER beating the game. But, still, I wouldn't hold my breath for getting one.

I just hate it when people claim to have beaten the game and being SO GOOD at it; when it turns out that they use the Game Shark to help them. -_-

RR: "Did you beat Suikoden?"
DORK: "Yeah! I beat the last boss easily! I was at Level 99!"
RR: "Um... did you use a Game Shark?"
DORK: "Yes."
RR: "Then OF COURSE, IT'S EASY!! BEAT IT WITHOUT THAT DEVICE!!"

Not all of us have the time to spend 50 plus hours of playing mission mode and survival for GGXX. We'd like a quick fix in order to post some info on a site as soon as possible.

I wouldn't say they can be used only for cheating...in some cases Game Enhancers do just that...enhance.

I've seen people play Pokemon and get Mew with it. (The real way is by having Nintendo give it to you in numerous contests, cons, etc.)

The other thing I've used Enhancers for myself is on some fighting games...if you've unlocked the stuff before and then lose it all, it makes a nice shortcut.

For DDR, I know some of my friends got the game not for the solo player part, but solely multiplayer. They just unlocked everything and play it multiplayer.

for RPGs and stuff, I think cheating defeats the purpose. you're supposed to play through the game and build up.. so.. automatically being at high levels is pointless. o_O; but fighting games are just there to let you beat the hell out of something, so, I think getting codes for more characters or stages is fine, if you don't have time to. like, my brother sucked royally at Capsom vs SNK on Dreamcast, so he popped online and d/l all the hidden characters because he knew he'd never get them by playing the game. I probably would have done the same thing because I'm lazy ~ but I admit playing again and again and again and seeing what you unlock is fun. I spent half a day sitting infront of my tv playing Tekken Tag getting all the characters.. and.. playing.. BOWLING! whee!

It's also an invaluable tool if you don't have a particular devkit for that system. We used to use the PSX GameShark all the time in school to 'explode' the games and study them.

I think cheat devices are allright, unlocking stuff is allright in some cases, but some people just abuse it too much and completly ruin a game(PSO anyone?)

I love toying with the game shark. In a world where no person can be godlike its nice to get that psuedo feeling through games. Yes there is that true game play experiance which can visited anytime. But a line from dot hack sign. Everyone plays it in their own way. Is it wrong for final boss to strike with the ultimate strike of doom and you're laughing at him.

It's cheating and it wrecks the game. Plain and simple. I like to beat every boss and get every secret and unlock every door myself. That's the point of playing.
Once I've fully beaten a game, however, I'd use the game shark to just go through and enjoy the storyline, or the levels I like to play. But the first time? You have to put the work in first and earn it. :)

I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!!!! j/k j/k

anyways, me and my best friends used to use Game Genie not necessarily as a way to cheat on games... but as a way to... experiment on them... we'd make up ridiculous codes and stuff and laugh at the game for being so stupid and glitching left and right. hahahahaha!!! stupid game!!!

If the game is an online game....yeah ;) There is plenty wrong IMO there...otherwise...if your playing solo and you bought the game....wtf does ANYONE have to say about how you play it?

Mah...I got Mew the hard way. Had to compete in a tournament to win him after beating ten opponents, two 'Gyms', and a League Master. O.o Hard stuff for a level 5 Mew...but worth it, if you ask me. They gave me a certificate! ^_^

Only time I use game shark is to play import games. if you wanna use it to beat you're game that's fine and I'm cool with it as long as you don't use it in a contest or something.
