View Full Version : WatCon on Saturday, March 18 (FREE CONVENTION!)

That's right, free convention.

WatCon is going to be held at University of Waterloo campus (in Waterloo, Ontario) on March 18th.

Registration is totally free! If you've been running too large a bill shopping for anime to pay for more conventions, this is perfect for you. =D

The mini-con will be a one day event running from 11 30am until 5 30pm.

Why are we running a convention without charging anyone?

Because this is a promotional event. U of Waterloo has a number of great hobbyist clubs and we thought it would be nice to throw an event to show all the past members how much we appreciated their support and to possibly introduce some people as new members.

There will be screenings in a theatre style setting as well as dealers, artists, seminars, game rooms and more.

Artists!
We have 12 available spots in artist alley and are looking for talented artists to fill them. The cost for the spots is FREE just like the rest of the event.

As the available spaces are limited, we are doing a simple screening process to try to increase the variety of art being sold at the event. Any interested artists should contact me at amytheyu@yahoo.ca with an attached sample of their work (scan or other digital image).

Panelists
We are still looking for panelists to help run the available seminars slots as well. Anyone interested should contact me at amytheyu@yahoo.ca with your seminar/panel idea(s) and any previous panelist experience you have had (the event name and your panel name).

Seminars are not limited to anime only. We also welcome any ideas related to sci-fi, comic books, gaming and many other hobbies.

Need directions?

We will be located in the Arts Lecture Hall (AL), which comprises of 2 theatres, 2 lecture halls and 4 seperate rooms for gaming and seminars.
A map of the UW campus can be found here:
http://www.uwaterloo.ca/map/map.html

If you're planning to come by bus, the Greyhound terminal located in downtown Toronto have several buses every day which come right onto campus. Tickets are approx. $26 for a round trip from Toronto.

Driving directions and parking information can be found here (http://www.civil.uwaterloo.ca/catt/ITTRC/drivedirection.htm).

Questions and comments can either be posted here or emailed to me at amytheyu@yahoo.ca

Hope to see everyone there. ^^

I'm definitely going to be there. (...and this time, when I leave an important costume piece at home, I can actually go and retrieve it. >_>)

If I lived anywhere in that direction I would. Since I do not I won't unfortunately.

Gotta love free though. MTAC is too close as well....

Isn't Advent Children coming out legit now? So any fansubs would not be illegal?

Family permitting (we go away for the March Break, might be back by then though, dates haven't been finalized yet, lolz), I'll be there! Gives me an excuse to check out UoW, since I applied to go there next year XD

Sounds so tempting. Me loves free things :)

I'm like heki-chan, though, I need to see how my assignments go around March. Hopefully I can make it; only paying for transport and food is a great deal.

I'll be in Ontario that week and the next for some business things and I'll make sure to stop by. It's a good idea to do this. I have some questions though:

1. Can we cosplay? Just so I know to be prepared.

2. You do know AC will be made available in March eh? here...in N/A I mean. Plus that there is already like ....6 subbed verisons out there. I mean I have no problems with it...just pointing it out. ^^

1. Cosplay's definitely welcome. We'll have a couple of cosplay related panels there as well if anyone would like to check it out.

2. AC's already available in Japan, so we'll be importing the R2 version and subtitling that. Downloading an already existing version would infringe on copyright laws (and numerous other laws) and we never do that, so we'll be subtitling it ourselves to avoid such problems as we're basically showing the official DVD with our own subtitles laid over that. ^^

It sounds interesting, so I might go. Just a couple of questions:

1) Anyone know the non-student price of a bus ticket to the campus?

2) Would there be a flyer table there? And if so, would anyone have a problem with me dropping off TT20 flyers if I come out?

Also, Kohana, where did you find that kawaii characature of Gogo? And do they have any of the other Kill Bill characters there?

Adrian and I will be driving in from Sauga (most likely), we might have an extra seat if you need. I'll let you know closer to the con. Not sure right now cuz we're dealing there and random-crap might take up more space ^_^;; But yeah, k I'm rambling =D I LOVE U

Oselle - A large portion of our members are actually non-UW students. Many are grad students or older. We actually have a couple of elderly members as well, so no way you'd be considered old. ^^

Anime Dave - I just updated the first info post with bus ticket info. Adult ticket for same day return is the same price as a student ticket, so it's approx. $26 for a round trip.

We don't have a flyer table, but we have a flyer holder we use for the same purpose for our shows. If you would like to bring a few flyers, we can probably accomidate them, although too many flyers would probably just go to waste.

Thanks Amy, you're the best :bigtu: - that is, until we find someone who's better.:p

And as to flyers, I'd only want to bring a few along anyways, just to pique interest.

BTW, UTARPA is Feb. 10th - want to send me some more info for an announcement at the show?

Small update!

Amongst the anime screenings, aside from Advent Children, Howl's Moving Castle will be added as a 2nd movie that will be shown. There will be a theatre screening yaoi/yuri (and shounen/shojo ai) animes run by GLOW (Gays and Lesbians of Waterloo).

As well, Konichiwa Japan (the Japanese club) will be joining Watcon and running a seminar for origami.

Derwin Mak has been confirmed as a guest and he'll be bringing his Schoolgirls presentation, so be sure to check that out! ^^

More details will be announced as they are finalized. Exact schedule of events and screenings will be available at the convention.

Quite the point, there were many people there that I didn't expect to be there (and now I regret convincing myself from making a random splurge trip to toronto)

Never misses anything much (he'll be hard to miss if he being himself). You might have already met him if you went to AN or CN this past year. He was the one wearing the giant Chocobo mascot and his sister was Shiva. ^^;;

If you want to join CTRL-A, you're more than welcome to. We're not strictly a U of Waterloo club. Actually, many of our members and almost half the execs are non-students. Several of my friends in the club who live locally have been part of the club since they were in high school or earlier. If you can make it to campus for the shows, it might be a good chance to meet some other anime fans and you definitely don't have to worry about being left out because of age. ^^

Yes, I did leave WatCon early, but that was at 11:00 in the morning to go to the Tim Horton's in the Student Life Centre (What a pretentious name. It was simply called Campus Centre when I went to UW). I went back to the convention 20 minutes later.

And yes, I stayed to the end of the convention, all 6 hours of it. It reminded me of those little one-day conventions that the Wilfred Laurier University Science Fiction Club held years ago (I won't say how many years) but was a lot less pretentious and more humorous.

The old WLU SF Club conventions had nobody in costume, had an English literature professor lecturing about "magic realism", had no gaming content, and discouraged panels about TV shows and media. I had a Doctor Who panel at one WLU convention, and the chairman told me to cancel it so that all the convention attendees would have no choice but to go listen to author George R.R. Martin and an English professor. He actually said, "Your panel is taking people away from our guest and Professor ______, so cancel it."

Watcon was different, though. I loved that some cosplayers came out and that there were two panels about cosplaying, a panel about spirituality and religion in anime (which, unfortunately, I had to miss, but seems like an interesting subject), and that I got to show my "There's Nothing Like a Schoolgirl" presentation (I admit, I used terms like "Jungian archetype", but I tried to keep it humorous too.). WatCon even had a dealer's room, which, while wasn't at Anime North proportions, was actually quite good for a one-day university convention. I don't even remember a dealer at those WLU SF Club conventions.

Thanks for giving me time for a reading (a small but enthusiastic audience showed up) and the autograph table. Hah, hah, I finally got to autograph a book at my old university.

(I graduated with a Master of Accounting and was supposed to become a CEO of a Fortune 500 company like the other M.Acc. graduates. Instead, I came back to read and autograph science fiction stories about Hooters Girls and reptile aliens while cosplaying as horror writer H.P. Lovecraft in a frock coat.)

Yay, now I can say I was WatCon's first author guest (and by default, Guest of Honour, I guess), and I stayed from the start to the finish of the convention.

WatCon was fun. And it actually ran the full extent of its planned time, unlike another convention I remember all too well.

Aww, i was wondering why i didn't see you ^^;; don't worry, luckily there are 3453453 more anime conventions to go to!!! Anime North is a must! if you can't go this year, you must go to the one next year ^__^

I thought, for a first one day con that's free... Watcon was really good ^__^ the "how to make cosplays" or something panel was really good... but a friend had anxiety problems or something so we couldn't stay forever ~__~

I... saw Seed_Chan and... Kiba/Kouga... Mokona guy person!! and kitty! XP

geh... there was other people i recognised... but er... kinda shy ^^;; I was curious on finding out who Amy was XP

I liked Watcon too!! Though I was a part of the crew that went for Infini's Bday dinnar, it was still an entertaining convention and totally worth it because it was free XDD;;

Watcon was fun! =D

I was really nervous at the cosplay panel, but there were lots of things to hide behind, and turning the spotlights on was entertaining. >_> ...and cupcakes. I wanted to play DOA in the gaming room, but by the time I got there it wasn't on the screen anymore. I'm glad so many people showed up for the day, and the group that came to dinner at Molly Bloom's was brilliant. XD

I fail at convention reports of any kind, so I'll just leave it at that.

Ah yes, I was a small but captive (and appreciative) audience. :toothy: I really must gather a larger audience to hear that story though, it's too fun!

I had a lovely time at WatCon, mostly it was great to see people in a completely relaxed environment. Alas I had to leave early to get to other commitments, but from what I could tell it seemed like a successful event. Kudos!

I'm probably rather late in saying this. But, Watcon was a lot of fun~

I was amazed to see all the people drive out to little ol'Waterloo. But for an anime convention who wouldn't? ^_^

Hey, Amy and all, sorry I couldn't make it. However, I did send out a few TT20 flyers with Kent.

Unfortunately, it was either come to WATCon, or get my $35 pre-reg for Anime North in on time.

Giant thanks for everyone who came! =D

I had a blast seeing everyone and all the Watcon organizers and volunteers were really pleased that people seemed to have had a good time. ^^

I didn't even get to see half the events I wanted to go to cause I was holed up being too stubborn that I had to make my costume into wearable condition instead of just calling it quits and go have fun sans costume. ^^;;

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and found it a worthwhile way to spend their saturday, especially to those who had to travel quite a distance to attend. We really appreciate everyone who came to support Watcon! =D

*chuckle* That was indeed me. Though my costume decided to rebel on Saturday. Either from wear the Sunday before at MTAC or walking up the street in wind/cold. Ah well. It all worked out in the end. And thanks muchly ^_^

Yay~! Utena cosplay. There can never be enough of that <--biased >>;. A question though, movie or series?

Also, the Rosebride has gotten around to getting an account on here as well: Little Fan, if you see her around.

i really want to do Anthy from the movie! There's only one thing that's stopping me... No Movie Utena cosplayer to go with me for piccies XP ! Anthy being all alone seems so... sad v.v;;; Just that none of my friends (that are female at least) have seen the series or movie yet so... BOO!

and alright, i'll keep a look out for Little Fan! XP

Hi, I'm Little Fan. ^_^ It's a pleasure to meet you.

We should do a movie cosplay group someday...or something... Because it would be pretty.
