Hey, just wondering how many of us are going to Otakon for the VERY first time, and how do you feel about it?

Moi, this is gonna be my first time going. I'm excited/nervous because it'll be only my 2nd time at a Con, and my first one was Shoujocon which pulls in maybe 1000 people. Maybe... I'm sure Otakon is going to be a different experience since it's so big. I can't wait to see all the costumes that promise to be amazing and to meet people if I decide not to be overly shy. That's a major flaw of mine. ^^;; But anway, who else is going for their first time?

Not me - but I am checking if my sister wants to come, and also 4 people in my anime club have expressed interest. So any of those 5 would be Otakon newbies if they come.

Edit
Just got an email back from my sister (that was fast). She is coming, so this will be the largest con she has been too. Now will have to see what costumes she decides to bring.

I'm not either but 3 people I know are. They wanted to go last year but were unable to. As for going to a big con from a small con, my first con had around 200 attend... and then we went to Otakon. It was a little overwhelming at first but we still had a great time!

*eeps* This year will be my first time at Otakon and, in fact, my first time at any anime con,. tho I have been to several Star Trek Cons.... I'm nervous... I've heard some pretty strange things about Anime con, but I'm also really excited... I can't wait to be in costume! Wheeee! And I'm going with my two best friends in the entire world... *bounces* I can't wait!

Man, i want the snow to stop and for August to be here in exactly 2.5 seconds!.... :;waits:: O well

Caranundomiel: WOOSH! Congrats! I was a bit nervous, but more excited than anything at my first con. Being there with two of my best friends also made it 10x as great. You're gonna have a blast!

Koumori: hey, I remember sort of meeting you at Shoujocon! XD Which doesn't mean anything... but... yeah. hehe, anyway.

Yes!!!!! We should all do something so that we can find other cosplay.com members. like.... where a bright neon orange sticker on our foreheads that says "YATTA!!"
or not... lmao.

Might be a good idea to put a colored star or sticker or something on our name tags. Members of other (non-fan) mailing lists I've been on have done similar things to identify themselves at conventions.

cyankirby
02-17-2003, 07:25 PM
That's a good idea! It would have to be bright enough for people to see it... I would certainly be on the lookout if people did that!

Hikaruchan
02-17-2003, 08:35 PM
Groups I have been with have done a gold star - but that is not easy to make out unless close. Something like a hot pink big dot might be more easy to spot (especially for us very nearsighted folk)

cyankirby
02-17-2003, 08:39 PM
Very true; it's tough to see people's badges sometimes unless you get really close to them. Flourecent (sp?) green, yellow, or blue would work too. As long as it's bright and people kept their badges in a visable spot.

Koumori
02-17-2003, 10:08 PM
OK - I'm going to propose a bright orange dot, then. A sticker, or even highlighter/market if you prefer. Upper right corner?

cyankirby
02-17-2003, 11:11 PM
That sounds good! I'll let my newbie friends know and I'll be looking for people with orange dots so that I can say hi! :D

SailorAndromeda
02-17-2003, 11:24 PM
ooo...that's a good idea! I was just at Katsu, that would have been good there as well. We'll have to remember that come August!

PS Koumori- Thanks for the Pleated skirt article you sent me awhile back. I didn't get to actually use it yet, since I didn't have enough fabric. But I hope to figure it out and use it for Kagome's skirt ^^

cyankirby
02-17-2003, 11:37 PM
It seems to be a good way to meet people who are in the same boat as you are. It's always fun to hang around with people rather then be alone... Just have to make sure that people remember to do that in August!

Koumori
02-17-2003, 11:53 PM
I'll try to remember to post a reminder thread as the date draws closer. SailorAn: yeah, the math is a little tricky, but it works! I'm drawing on that article again for my Yuna skirt. (Because anybody can be the FIRST person to do a cosplay, but it takes someone special to be the LAST!)

This will be my first otakon, and after surviving Katsucon, I am looking forward to a con in the summer, even though I'll Be flame Broiled inside my Alucard costume. I also plan to go as Nabeshin And Fei fong Wong, so i have to get everything ready in time.

Carmila
02-18-2003, 09:57 AM
Alucard, I know how you feel. I am going to have my Carmila costume done for Otakon, and let me tell you, I am going to swelter! I had to be different and make it out of crushed velvet. Not only does the thing weigh a ton it is hotter than hell!

BTW - Hikaruchan, when is your b-day? Maybe we can do a cosplay.com b-day get together or something! It would be fun.

Carmila,

8/3 for me, so 2 days apart on our birthdays per your profile. If Otakon had been weekend before they picked probably wouldn't have been able to come.

More like my family would be upset thinking I was blowing them off. I rather avoid hurt family feelings.

Thanks for comment about avvy. Anna-neko took that at the 1 previous Otakon I went to. I'm a silly grinning gal.

Er, I was pretty mindless at the time, I didn't know most of the characters there. I didn't know who Chi was either ^^;;; Or what Cowboy Beebop was ^^;;;;;;;;
And well if you were there, you know how the whole con revolved around Cowboy Beebop.

Surely do. ^_^ We were so disappointed to know that when we arrived to see the BeBop movie premiere..we had JUST missed it by literally two seconds!! @_@ Damn, that stung bad...

Yar, there were CB cosplayers everywhere ^_^ So we felt very much like individuals walkin around as Fushigi Yuugi charries...we were even surprised to see a Tasuki, Yui, Suzaku no Miko Miaka, and a female Nuriko cosplayers!

But that was only on Saturday...Sunday we were the only ones ( so lonely! ;_; lol)

*growls* My parents aren't paying for Otakon, because they're already doing BAAF. So if I can salvage enough money, I'll definitely see you all there!

I'm and Otakon virgin, as well as a cosplay newbie! My first con was also AXNY 2002 (I saw ya Chiri! ^_^ ) but I was dressed normally -_- how boring lol. I didn't really know too much about cosplay then, so meh. At least I'm doing something this year!

So Otakon will be my 2nd con, and if I can't make it there...>_> I guess it'll just be BAAF. I really really wanna go to Otakon though!!! *saves up mucho dinero*

Chibi-Lisa
02-23-2003, 04:15 PM
Yay Caryn! That was me first Con too!! And the Otakon is my second! Well I guess I can consider you lucky that your parents actually paid for the BAAF!! I had $25!! I'm lucky I got home, I didn't even eat that day ;_; (I was Rinoa w/tha Shooting Star if yah saw me ^^).

Caryn
02-23-2003, 05:09 PM
Grr i saw TONS of Rinoas at AXNY but i didn't see you! *pouts* And your shooting star looks really awesome, too. Well I hope that I'll see you at Otakon (and BAAF, if you're going to that too?)

Chibi-Lisa
02-23-2003, 05:14 PM
Er, I though their were only 2 Rinoas there ?_? (And I was the second one ^^;;;; )

o.O I saw like 6 walking around the halls. Anywho! Big w00t, my mom just said she'd take me to Otakon and even Shoujocon and pay for meals and gas and stuff...I hafta do hotels, registration fees, and of course my spending money...*whew* I need to get a job!!!

*pokes* Btw Chibi-Lisa, are you going to any cons other than Otakon?

Chibi-Lisa
02-23-2003, 05:52 PM
Um, hoefully the ICon at Stony Brook ^^ And the Shoujocon because it is the second closest Con I'd ever go to! (First is the AXNY). Um, it's SOOO hard for me to get around to places =P My parents won't let me stay in a far away State by myself at a hotel, and they barely want to come because they travel themselves around the world anyway(AND I STAY HOME!! GrRrRrRRrrr). Thank Yevon that money and costumes is not the issue ^^.

Caryn
02-23-2003, 06:02 PM
>.< And you can't get your parents to stay in the hotel with you? I guessles not....even though I hafta pay for everything, my parents think it's awesome that I love anime and games (they got into it a tiny bit, too, after AXNY!) so my mom is willing to take me anywhere if I pay for it. See, money IS my issue -_- it sucks...

But yay! I MIGHT also be going to Shoujocon. I'm going ta BAAF also, it's in the same place as AXNY was last year. ^_^

Chibi-Lisa
02-23-2003, 07:05 PM
YAY!! It is?? There better not be a Brazlian parade again.... It took forever to get there (Which made me miss the FF Photoshoot ::Runs to corner and cries:: )

Hahaha orange dots. Fun.

Umm. I went to Otakon for a day in '01 and not since. So this'll be my first time going all three days but not really my first Ota. o_O I have like.. twelve cons behind me now..? I forget the exact number.. by the time Ota rolls around, I'll've gone to three or four cons in the year already. ^.^; Otakon is my big east coast con of the year, wahoo~

Yeah, um. I'll know a lot more people this time and have a lot more cosplay planned out. ^_^

Giant Alucard
02-28-2003, 09:08 AM
This will be the first time go to Otakon and the first year I try to do Kareoke......
Almost like saying that I'm putting myself in front of a firing squad of my own free will. I will also be the first time I wear more then one costume at a con ( wearing only one gets kinda boring). I just wear my two best ones on Saturday.

Actually, if we want to do something cute and different, I have like a million of these penguin stickers that we can put on our badges. They are small, about the size of a gold star. It would be definately different!

Bright stickers are always good unless you put the penguins on top of a bright bg sticker. That might work...

Im exactly like you Isami I went to Shoujocon last year, plus Ive been to a couple pokemon conventions, but this is my first big con... I wanted to go to shoujocon again but my mom wants otkaon... ahh Im scared. >< I should plan to meet with someone once Ive gotten all the plans made out.

It would - but I think maybe bright colors are the way to go, so we can spot each other from a distance. Also, everybody should be able to get their hands on an orange sticker or highlighter, so we could all be sure that we have our dot, rather than having to rely on a central Sticker Distribution Point. :)

Caryn
03-01-2003, 12:53 PM
lol, Sticker Distribution Point...dunno why, that just amuses me for some reason ^_^

Anyway, yea maybe we should stick to bright colors. We just hafta post a thread near the date of the con so everyone knows ^^
