I am a HUGE Malice Mizer fan. They're my favorite band of all time (as long as we're not talking Klaha-era. >.<!)

Gackt is good on his own, too.

I like a lot of LUNA SEA, and I like some Dir En Grey, too. ^^

I worship Dir en Grey and malice Mizer and Klaha-era was great I love Klaha ^_^ gacket was pretty good to but ::scratchs head:: I like klaha better for some strange reason ^_^;

02-18-2003, 05:16 PM
*twitch* Mizer is better without Klaha. Just my opinion.

I don't HATE Klaha, but Mizer's sound TOTALLY changed once he joined. So....I like Gackt-era better.

I'm never too broke to put my 2 cents in. XD

Moi Dix Mois, Malice Mizer, Dir En Grey

as for choice of Mizer, I really like them both (don't hit me) Gackt-Mizer tends to be less heavy then Klaha-Mizer, still I dig both.

Luna Sea was my fave till they broke up...I adore Glay and love Dir en Grey....

I also like Cocco who is kinda Jrock kinda not but kinda Jpop kinda not...(I think it's cuz of her lyrics and the fact most of her songs do include her band or something :P)

What are we needing suggestions for? ^_-

Malice Mizer is the overall top, no question, for me. They are one of the three most influential mythologies in my life. Even if you don't prefer Gackt, Merveilles is a staple, not to mention the most varied sound and costuming.

I'd say Pierrot is my fav musically tho as I never skip a track. Their sound is engaging and recognizable and there always seems to be an inspiring bit no matter how dark some of the songs swing.

Dir en Grey for visual insanity, clever lyrics, amazing vocal effects and bizarre instrumentals. And Kaoru.

And I recently got sucked into Psycho le Cemu ^_-* Not goth at all (much more sci-fi/anime-y rock) but immensely fun and very solid music. Plus Daishi can actually sing. From a cosplayer perspective, too, totally irresistable.

Actually, you shouldn't ask me, because I'll recommend everything (except one band.) La'cryma Christi has some interesting stuff, and is certainly different from everyone else - it's like some undefined ethinicity. I like Penicillin, Laputa and Plastic Tree, too, but they're all semi-acquired tastes. L'arc (especially earlier stuff) is a good bet. Or you'll just be safe with anything blessed by Yoshiki or Mana.

Everyone mentioned the same bands... o.o;; I think they're all visual style bands too. No one mentioned any actual rock n roll type bands...although they might be considered pop by other people and probably by Japan music charts...though I'm not sure. Anyway, my personal faves are:

Shiina Ringo: more than just j-rock. She is just crazy good. She crosses musical genres in her songs. Download ANY song by her and you will most likely like it.

Triceratops: I love the guy's voice - they have darn catchy songs. Hard to describe. But they're a really good group, to me, as far as rock bands go...from Japan.

The Brilliant Green: They're just good. Some songs are in very easy to understand english. Not as "hard" as Triceratops really...some songs are, but mostly they're a bit softer sounding. A female singer.

Puffy Ami Yumi: I dunno if this is really rock at all but they have rock songs. They're really pop, I guess. Strange, catchy songs that I wish I knew the lyrics to.

Yarg, it's hard to describe them all. They're not like ....thrasing rock n roll, all four groups. Shiina Ringo is totally awesome though. Heh...

Haha. I was noticing the abundance of visual kei suggestions too =D

Ooh Triceratops! That reminds me I must DL more of his stuff.
I still say Siam Shade, because I'm obsessed. Tho' it's too bad they broke up T___T

I think other people mentioned L'arc~en~Ciel but let me just echo that. You haven't experienced Jrock until you've heard some of their stuff. *nod, nod*

Hmm...I will sample a few of L'arc~en~Ciel's songs then, because you are such a sales person, Umi. :D

But I dunno...I don't think I really like a lot of visual kei stuff. Like I downloaded a couple songs by Malice Mizer and only REALLY liked just one of them. Visual kei makes me think "industrial music," which I don't like. But then again, I have the one punkish song by Malice Mizer (baroque) and nice instrumental song, Medieval Song by Glay and they're not really industrial at all and in fact are quite quite good and blabizy blah. Maybe I should ask you guys for some suggestions on a good visual kei song...

:o

Amano Jyaku
02-23-2003, 09:23 PM
Malice Mizer is hardly an industrial band. I should know i'm an industrial Dj. They're more the equivalent of japanese goth.

Anybody know of any EBM or Industrial J-rock bands???

Amano

number18
02-24-2003, 10:15 AM
Yeah I figure Visual kei bands aren't really industrial...but that's the word that pops into my mind when I think of it...I associate the two words. Plus I know nothing of industrial music in the first place and whatever other genres tie in with it...and like...what exactly defines a song/band as being goth? I'm really ignorant of it all... :(

But I downloaded a couple songs by L'arc en ceil last night...and Gackt and stuff...didn't really like em. :( But I will keep searching to see if anything I fancy pops up...

Iceman, and Access, which I wouldn't be surprised if no one else has ever heard of either of them. x_x; They're big enough to play in crowded concert halls but still pretty obscure...plus Iceman broke up a few years ago.

I recently acquired a love for Duel Jewel, too...^_^;

I never really got into the whole Visual K thing. I absolutely adore their costumes but only a few songs really appeal to me...plus it seems like Malice Mizer is getting extremely trendy. And...yeah, Malice Mizer and other VK bands are nothing like industrial music. .___. They don't even remotely sound like industrial, lol. x_x;;

Umi
02-24-2003, 02:31 PM

I LOVE shiina ringo. I think a lot of people neglect jrock stars that don't have crazy outfits. And visual k is just another marketing tool created by the pop music industry. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I love Mana's outfits.

here are some bands i like: Judy and Mary, Pizzicato Five, Polysics, errr sometimes Melt Banana (sometimes they get a bit too obsure for my taste x.x). And of course The Brilliant Green.

If you try the wrong songs first...er...yeah, L'arc gets a bit flat sounding in a few, but they have plenty of different sounds (plus many anime themes if you're into that) And Gackt is completely different all the time...like he's all over the board and on the rift between rock and pop, still shifting back and forth (he's got mega-multiple-personalities...he contradicts himself from song to song O_o....that's okay tho.) Tell me genre you -do- like and I'll suggest the Gackt song you need.

Umi
02-24-2003, 07:38 PM
Word Yui. I can do the same for L'arc songs =D

You know I feel like a complete ass. I had a Judy and Mary avatar at the time and one of their songs in my sig but I completely failed to mention them. *braindead* Thank you SteroLab for not being empty headed like me. haha XD

Oh and on the "Whoa! This could be an American band!" note... the Penpals are quite spiffy. I recommend "CARS"

number18
02-24-2003, 10:15 PM
Yar...I shall look up Judy and Mary and the Penpals too...don't you think there's something about japanese rock (in the vein of Triceratops and TBG and such) that is just not found in new american rock n roll? It's hard to describe. I almost wanna say that it's like...a retro kind of rock n roll...but it's totally not. Like I said - hard to describe.

And as for P5...I <3 them. They broke up a couple years back though...I don't know why. But have no fear - there is another group out there that makes music much in the same vein as P5. They're called Fantastic Plastic Machine...absolutely fabulous! My friend made me a tape of their music and it's so...quirky...you know, like how Go Go Dancer or Airplane is by P5. Download download!!

And oh yeah - Vertigo Pop! put out a 4-issue comic book called Tokyo!. It centers around a gaijin in Japan who runs into a visual kei obsessed, cosplaying teenager girl that has a pathetic brother in the Yakuza...and ...without giving whatever crazy plot away, I'll just say it's an awesome comic. The artwork is very uniqe...and there is a (possibly, most likely) made up visual kei band in it...plus lots of funny costumed cosplaying scenes. It's very funny. I recommend it to all you VK people just on the basis of its pictures. Hehe. That's what drew me to it....

Wai...most of the bands listed at VK, though...

Jrock wise, why not give actually trying to list j*ROCK*. Like, most of the bands named here are male ones, too, they're a LOT of really good female jrock bands!! Like Tef-Tef, The Scanty (which became really popular because of Full Moon o Sagashite..ara..) and Cocco (which someone did already name her, but some of her songs can get so good! X3).

But other really good jrock bands atre Delta Ark, Gurimu (love them! X3), Shulla, 2nd effect, Nightmare/Naitomea, Fatima and hotaru. -^-^- (a lotta these are VK, too, though..-x_x;;)

But my personally all time fav is Baroque, dang can those guys ROCK!

Now the question i have is...do you guys like the music more than the image of said bands? or are you more in-tune with their costumes or "how hot" their members are rather than their music
In other words...if you didn't know what the band looked like...and downloaded some of their music...what would you think of them?? The reason I ask is that, everyone likes Malice Mizer and Dir en grey, etc...and their outfits *are* cool... but I feel like more people like them because of that; rather than the reason that they should be enjoyed, which is their music. Discuss.

My favorites are:
- X (aka X-japan)
- hide
- Sex MACHINEGUNS
- Pierrot
- Due le Quartz
- Dir en grey's first two albums (Gauze and Macabre)
- Luna Sea

Hmm... I think a lot of people ARE attracted to the costumes, but for the longest time when I was getting into jrock I was ... not horrified, but I wasn't really cool with the costumes at all. Ha ha. So even after I saw a pic of (for example) Dir en grey, I wasn't initially impressed. After I warmed to the costumes (and I already liked the music), it was all good. Now I'm overly impressed by the outfits as well as the music... Wait, I am a little judgmental about the costumes, but I bad costume doesn't mean a bad band, ne?

Then again, for bands like MM and Deg, they are considered VISUAL bands, so going with that title, the way they look is pretty important. Not that anyone should listen to them BECAUSE of how they look.. I shouldn't be allowed to post this late at night... I'm almost 600% sure that half of this makes no sense!

Dir en Grey would be my favorite band at the moment. I suggest them to everyone that shows some interest in Japanese music because I love their music. I cannot count the number of times I've listened to certain songs and just fallen in love with it all over again.

I heard their music before I ever saw their costumes. O_o I was also kinda "O...kay.." When I first saw some of the outfits, but I got used to it and started to think it was cute. Haha, I won't deny that having the whole band of Dir en Grey along with almost every other J-rock group look goddamn fine isn't a big bonus. I mean, yesh, even the bands that have bad music are cute!

Other bands I like are Pscyho le Cemu, Duel Jewel, and Kagrra. I like a few others ones like MM and Plastic Tree but they aren't huge favorites.

...nothing wrong with going with mainstream bands. Just because other people (who may or may not be worthy or whatever) like it, doesn't mean you should ignore it and go elite and obscure. (I mean, I -like- being all elite and obscure myself, but I try to not judge anyone based on their current knowledge base or simply their favorites. Mainstream groups get mainstream because they are obviously doing something very much right.) Remember, if you can't actually find the real published CDs to buy, you're not supporting those lesser-known bands anyway. But, on the other hand, it's good to know of as many different groups as possible...you know -before- they break up and make you all sad. ^_- I used to go for a lot of indies bands and then have my heart broken when they quit after a year, so from now on, I try to aim for slightly established groups...there's certainly enough variety just there. Personally, as long as it's Japanese and male, I will like it or grow to like it (except in one instance.)

And in that vein...when I first was exposed to Malice Mizer, I -didn't- know what they looked like...I just knew that they sounded fun and silly half the time, dark and powerful the other half. It was only later that I found out they were so painfully creative and wonderfully weird as well, which just enhances the whole experience and makes their performance more accessable to someone who doesn't understand the lyrics. The visuals are an expanded level of the story they are telling, and cannot be disregarded.

Really, I started out my Japanese musical adventure as a Deen/TMR/Glay kinda fan...and if that isn't wimpy X_x* After I truely began to be properly exposed to the image side of VK, I started finding out music that did match my personality better, using those visuals as an initial guide. With DeG, it was image first, most definitely, but I've since trained my ear to be highly appreciative of their whole run. But then again, my favorite band ever is Pierrot...I cannot think of a single track I'd ever skip, and they started at such a high level and just keep improving...but while they have a vague darkness in their style, they are not distinctively visual at all. I mean, I would never cosplay them. On the other hand, would I have ever heard Psycho le Cemu had they not been named that and dressed so intensely and colorfully?

The single most important aspect concerning visual kei is that the costuming and theatrics is -equally- important as the orchestration and lyrics. One or the other may get you into the band initially, but they are inseperable, and I would always prefer bands that can pull off both.

Yeah, it's more of a girl asthetic, isn't it? (We'll forgive you if you don't get it.)

yui it's not that they are "obscure" it is that they are "new" and on minor "indie" labels as apposed to majors. onmyo-za for example didn't sign with a major till thier 3rd album.

interesting question, Nabeshin. In my case, the reason I started listening to Malice Mizer and others was because I saw a few pictures, and thought "wow, they look really... scary." I didn't like the costumes at all, but I was curious what they sounded like. So I downloaded a few tracks from Bara no Seido and fell in love with Malice Mizer. Since then the costumes have completely grown on me, and now can't imagine how I thought they were scary.

But it was a good question. I think alot of the really visual stuff is...well, shock afterall. Whether it appeals to you or not, it's gotten your attention and piqued your interest. You'll remember the band better that way. I just wanted to say it wasn't just a simple tactic, though, and that's its an intergral part of the artform. It just solidifies their music.

I agree, Yui. Mp3's make it so easy to cheat with Japanese music. You're thinking- 'well, this band is extremely hard to find and it would probably cost $40 for their CD, so I'll just get the mp3.' jpophouse.com alone has quite a bit of stuff, so I love them. I always get mp3's before I buy CD's, and I call buying the CD "paying for my sins." ^_^ Besides, most Jpop and Jrock CD's have cool packaging and booklets with awesome pictures and graphics. It makes it more worth buying. And even though I'm just buying one copy, it does give you that little fuzzy feeling that you're supporting an artist you love. ^_^
