I played piano for about 3-4 years but quit after the practice was getting to my head. Forced instrument skills are evil. Don't get me wrong, the piano plays beautiful music, but only with those who have the patience and devotion for it.

I tried my hand at piano, but I'm too busy with work :( I'm planning lessons for guitar or piano this summer.

My fiance is a fantastic percussionist!! He's been playing for ten years, and his proffessors are trying to get him full rides to universities all over the country. o.o;; (So jealous.) He plays almost everything - from piano to marching quads.. but his specialty is tha marimba. Very beautiful.

right now I'm playing clarinet (8 years) for concert band and tenor sax (2 years) for jazz band. but if need be I could switch to flute, oboe, or another sax. probably any other woodwind since it's not too hard to switch, but I've never touched anything but the already listed heh heh.

I'd love to learn cello, but I don't think my brain could handle only 4 strings to play so many notes ^_^ same with brass, I find it all mind-boggling...

I played the flute in 4th grade but never even made it to the first concert because I broke it when I used it to hit one of my brothers o_O;; Then when we started learning the recorder in 5th grade I liked it so I took the time to learn all of the Disney songs but now I can't remember how to play anything on it. So instruments aren't my thing but I was in chorus/chorale from 4th to 10th grade. I quit because I hated the teacher >>; she's evil and made people sing religious songs.

Ooh! Lots of other musicians here too. ^_^ Yay.

I've played the violin for 10 years now, the clarinet for 6 years, playing means taking weekly lessons at a music academy here. Then, I know how to play a lot of instruments, I can play the piano a little (like bedazzle my friends by playing Gravitation-music on it XD), the bass, drums... A lot. I've been in the music business for 16 years. XD

I used to play the violin and viola *both the same to me just different sound* but now the school I go to doesn't have an orchastra. So I can't play anymore cause of that and on the count that I can't afford to buy either or afford lessons for that matter...so sad.

I played Violin for 3 years until I moved and I couldn't find another teacher. I picked up Gituar and played that for 5 years until I had to quit because of Color Guard. I currently play the panio, which I have been playing for 5 years, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and my favorite, Eb Contra Alto Clarinet. I also play some percussion, mainly the bass drum, keyboards, and Cymbals

I know a lil bit of every string instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass)
my main instruments are the guitar and viola. And being a music student since 4th grade.... I know some piano too.

I used play electric bass and rhythm guitar. I'm a total Beatles and Byrds junkie so I got a boootiful Rickie 12 string. It's wasted on me since I have a crappy sense of rhythm. XD

My main instrument is violin which I have been playing since 4th grade...edo...7 years. But piano was my first instrument. I started piano when I was 4.
I like violin a lot more. Because of violin, curiosity, and the love of music helped me pick up a whole lot of other instruments...quickly.
I taught myself string bass, because in middle school, there was a shortage of bassist. Because of that, I basically know how to play bass guitar. And well, because of violin, it was easy for me to pick up viola, and I also learned cello. My cousin taught me how to play the flute, and growing up, my parents grew up in Thailand having to play Thai classical music, so every Thai instrument I get my hands on I teach myself to play.
I wish I had more time to practice though. I also wish I started violin earlier, but I am catching up with every hour of practice.

I don't really "play" anything.. so much as that I compose with them...

Akai MPC-2000 (sampler/sequencer/drum machine)
Roland SP-808 (sampler/sequencer/digital 4-track)
Roland SP-202 (sampler)
Roland SH-101 (synthesizer)
Zoom RFX-2000 (multi effects unit)

etc, etc...

so does anyone out there have anything published and released?
I'm on the DIGITAL HARDCORE RECORDINGS "Don't Fuck With Us" compilation.

Just did a show in L.A. on the 22nd too.

very nice setup Kaneda, you have a tres cool list of old-school goodness.. I put together a Korg Triton-controlled setup a year-and-a-half ago and over time added a few things like an Akai Z8 and Roland XV-5080, tied it into a computer system running Reaktor and all the newest gadgets and then realized I never had the time to use any of it.

As for my musical background, I was trained in jazz and symphonic percussion for 8 years, went to college majoring in percussive performance and then dropped out a couple of years later to write music and sing in a band. Had 4 songs on the college radio circuit as a solo artist in the early 90's and wore a lot of flannel. Put together a group and did 100% acoustic gigs, group broke up a year later, just one week before we were to be interviewed as an "up and coming band" during the height of the Chicago alternative scene, and disappeared from view. Basically it was a career of near-misses. :) I think in total I must've recorded over 30 songs in the studio and performed twice as many.

I'm considering doing the coffee-house circuit or something just to scratch the itch that's been there for years since I stopped playing seriously.

If you're ever playing down in San Diego let us know and we'll totally come check out a show.

NICE!!!
too bad about the disband though.

the thing i like about what I do is that I need only myself to get it done. and my style shows in that as well.
I don't really consider it electronic music 'cause it's alot more than that.
it owes alot more to a punk- anything goes attitude than an electronic one.
the sounds don't matter. It's more important to get an atmosphere down.
NO STYLES, NO IMAGE.

I played flute for about six years and piccolo for about two years. I quit because the highschool band that I was relocated to didn't have any soul (ie. played the same songs every year, got great scores, but had NO feeling).
I sing, like punk/rock singing. Not a choir girl. *g*
Would really like to pick up an electric bass. Probably will.

lol, I love some of the stuff we sing in choir. We have a song called "All for me Grog" It's great. It's all about sailors and all they need is beer, smokes and hookers. lol.

We are in the middle of singing Les Miserable, a medly from it.

I can reach the high notes, but I have more stamina for middle soprano, which is still rather high. Me, my friend Nikki, and this other girl named Tara are always the last three in warm ups. We compete and each day a different person comes out on top. Sometimes somebody is sick or somethin'.

I'm just sick of the gospel pieces we sing. Nothing against religion, but they are repetitive. "Little lamb, Little Lamb blah blah blah....."

Anywho.. me likey the choir. ^_^ I'm also on Choir student staff which means I get to miss a lot of school for field trips.. lol

Lets see, in elementary I played the xylophone then switched to alto saxophone then to clarinet and stayed with that til high school. In high school I couldn't stand the majority of katty clarinets, so switched back to alto and soprano saxophone.

Haven't played for a while, but think I could get back to alto sax pretty quick. Would take a bit for me to get a good feel back for ombisure needed for higher clarinet and soprano sax notes.

hmm... I'm in the pit for the spring musical. this is interesting because since I have an entire part to myself, it requires me to switch between clarinet, tenor sax, bass clarinet, flute and alto clarinet (in that order of amount of play time, with clarinet playing getting 70% of my score and it going down from there) this is definatly going to cause some confusion in the beginning, but it'll be a great challenge and a blast to play. although I've never had to constantly switch instruments in an extended performance before...

I used to play the piano, and lost intrest.

I played the string Bass for 5 years, then I quit after 10th grade (I'm in 12th now). I just got tired of it...

However, I'm looking at DJ equipment now. Turntables, equalizers, vinyl, all that good stuff. Turntables actually aren't as expensive as I thought they were. HOORAY FOR TECHNO. :B

I played piano for 7 years and also did some choir singing... and the skills I've gained still remain deep inside of me.

To those who mentioned synths like Roland, Akai and Korg... nice experience! You can play electronic music? Like Jean-Michel Jarre (one of my fave artists)?

I played any sax there was, I was good too (first chair in my high school band and offered a scholarship which I declined). I was also able to play oboe a little, and I played cello about 8 years ago. One of my ex's was on the flute, she learned how to play the Zelda theme ( I tried to, but to no avail).

I briefly played the piano; found out my concentration wasn't good enough to use both of my hands while moving them around. I really envy those who can play the piano because it requires so much talent and persistence; that and its entertaining ^_^

The flute, on the other hand, does not require finger readjustment every few seconds, so I was better at that. :D I played for about two and a half years and slowly gave it up. I may get back to it some day, but I don't think my school life would permit that. (I actually kinda miss it ^^)

well..I played the violin for a long time...but I really cannot take it anymore...I just don't enjoy playnig it as much anymore I guess .... I can play a little bit on my fathers old organ...but not enough to really merit any credit for it ^^....I still like to listen to orchestra music...but I don't play much anymore..maybe one day I'll dig the thing back out and feel like playing again.....right now I kinda want to learn drums..or guitar...^^;

I played the recorder in grade school for a while but i never liked that. I also played the keyboard for a little while in grade 9. Arc is pretty good at keyboard. Does anybody know any sites where i can find some tabs for some videogames?

Wooh, I feel late again in a topic.

I've played the piano for about 10 years, and have been teaching myself how to play the guitar a bit. Someday, somehow, I want to learn how to play an alto sax, violin, and flute. I don't know if that will ever happen, though. . .

Classical flute/piccolo-20 years, piano-12 years. (Don't do the math. I started playing young, and I'm still older than a lot of you! *laughs*) Was a music major and currently play/teach professionally. :)

Oh, and ukulele growing up as part of the school curriculum.

Odin - FYI, sax & flute are good instruments to learn to double on. Fingerings are very similar. Lots of musicals/jazz call for flute/sax doubling on a part. Good luck!

I played the piano for almost ten years (roughly 3rd-12th grade), and a Chinese instrument called the erhu for around six years (7th-12th grade). Ever since I've been in college, I haven't practiced. :( I used to perform a lot with my erhu (volunteer hours for college apps!). It really helped with my self confidence and my ability to stand up in front of audiences.

Had a keyboard since I was 7. Never had real lessons until college, I took a class piano class while I was taking theory. Had to unlearn a lot of my bad habbits... But, I've got a good ear. I loved melodic dictation.

I picked up singing in college as well. Sang baritone for a while until I auditioned for the chamber singers. I switched to tenor and found out the sky's the limit for me. (Lowest note is an F below the staff, highest is a G above high C.) Got a voice scholarship :D

Used to play the trumpet. Picked it up in grade school, played in concert bands until I graduated high school. Marched Trumpet in high school as well for Lake Park, if anyone participates(ed) in Bands of America. '96 was my senior year.

My GF is majoring in music ed, so she has been teaching me instruments as she learns them. So far, the only one I've really been interested in is the clarinet.

I tried picking up Bass when I was 16. Needless to say, it didn't last too long. Bass just doesn't interest me as much as guitar does.

flute and piccolo... and a few vietnamese instruments. Grandfather was a musician/songwriter... um... yeah. Howdy =D

Oh and there's my ocarina that I use for my Zelda costume >_> but that doesn't really count (tho I CAN play it hehe)

Bass doesnt have the same effect as Electric, but you can still look and play great with it. Just mix it with a wah-pedal, and make a crazy riff or solo with it, like I do.
