After a failed attempt at trying to piece together angel wings, I thought I'd try seeking out professional help^^* I was just wondering, what are good materials to start with and How can they be put together. Also, can I get the two seperate wings to connect on my back? Thanks^^

I would suggest asking rosiel by PMing her...she makes all of her own wings and they are HUGE!! she should be able to help you if she isn't too busy....good luck on the wings! hope they turn out beautiful!!!

Thanks!^^ Already one step ahead of you, though. I PMed her about a month ago, but she still hasn't replied! She's probably really busy, though, so It's okay^^ I just need to know how to get started, and then i'll be able to take it from there!! Thanks, though!

I bought a bunch of wing rounds from http://www.rainbowfeatherco.com/

The wings I made were actually the arms of the costume. What I would do for wings that will go on your back is get some PVC piping and connectors from Home Depot or somewhere similar to form the bone structure then use plastic screening to form a general shape of the rest of the wing. Glue the screening to the piping and then run some thread through the holes and around the pipe just to be sure it doesn't come off at the worst possable time. Then, just hot glue the feathers in place. To finish off the PVC part, you can cover it in 3/4" fur like I did or maybe use a feather boa like you can find in costume stores of Jo-ann's fabrics.

You should ask Ghost. Her wings are AMAZING. She taught me how to make them, and I'm sure she can teach you, as well.

AMAZING.

I'll apologize right now for not answering... I get so many PMs if I don't answer them on the spot they get lost in the avalanche. X__X

I am planning on writing up a tutorial eventually, but I need to sit down and find the time to do it first, especially if I need to tackle topics like odd numbers of wings, how to make your wings flap when you walk (I find that so cute, it adds to the realism), and how to make your harness so your back not your shoulders supports the weight.

Which I should do after A-kon, since I am competing with my wings then...

> You should ask Ghost. Her wings are AMAZING.

Yup, her wings are really nice... but they don't look real. As a hint, look how feathers are placed on a real bird when you work on your wings, it'll make a whole lot of difference.

Building wings using real-life references and anatomy (like for bones in bat wings) helps make the finished product realistic.

i suggest eating a chicken wing and lookin at the bone structure then fold it or open it the way u want and look at the way it is. then make a modle of it

its how i did my open wing for adam
and my 4 folded wings for adam as well

*goes to look for Ghosts's pics*

Thanks Tsuki! :)

I do believe that it's mandatory that you look at the arrangement of the feathers on a real bird. Here's a detailed link http://www.exoticbird.com/winganat.html

I used the picture of Alexiel as a reference LOL. I paid attention on the wing shape too much that I crammed the feathers part, which is the most essential aesthetically. I made two sets of tri-wings and we had 3 afternoons to finish it. Give enough time and effort and your wings will turn out perfectly.

I'll be rearranging the feathers for Sephiroth. I still have 4 bundles of chicken feathers (I suggest using turkey feathers of different sizes though). ^_^

Hey! Don't worry about it! I'm just glad you could help me^^
Just one more question, and then I promise I'll stop bugging you. About How much does it cost you to make a pair of wings. From where I'm standing now, mine will be around $125. $75=feathers,
30= wire, and 20= anything else I might need. Is that too much, or too little? Thanx^_^

Rosiel- I'm curious, what kind of armature did you use for your wings? were they very heavy? :)

I really admire that you studied bird anatomy, it makes a difference.

Personal opinion time.

Angel wings don't look QUITE like bird wings to me. I don't give a FIG what anyone else thinks, but I believe there are some differences. I really do. And while looking at birds' wings is helpful, I wouldn't want my wings shaped QUITE like a bird's.

Just an opinion.

geez, you don't have to get so touchy about it. "I don't give a FIG" ? no ones attacking you, dude. I personally prefer bird-like wings for angels. that doesn't mean that I or anyone else is forcing that opinion on you.

O.o;
I didn't mean to be touchy at all. I come across like that sometimes, I know.
Sorry to rub you the wrong way. X_x

I don't think I'm the touchy one. ^^;

Um.. anooo... feathers can be bought in SMALL quantities, right? ^^; Because Subaru's wings (http://www.animeweb.info/albums/Episode19/hacksign19_003.jpg) are rather tiny. I was considering not even making them out of actual feathers... so essentially I'm butting in on this here topic and asking what you think.. because thus far I haven't been able to find a small quantity of mixed feather sizes around here. I might just make some stuffed fabric wings. Advice please? XP

visit that www.rainbowfeatherco.com website. It's great!!! You can buy feathers in small quantities at relatively low prices. And if you end up having too much.... Make another pair! The more the merrier, right^^?

It seems that the only advice anyone ever gives on making wings is the "look at a bird's wings" trick... but what always gets me... how do you make the harness? I'm just interested in what other people have done... anyone care to share?

I'm interested in that as well.

there are lots of different ways to make wings in general, here's a few that may be at least somewhat inspiring:
http://www.avians.net/legend/Fursuit.html
http://www.eyesinthedark.org/wolfwares/
both are bat-wing types.

the victoria's secret feather wings,... they mad a wire frame, covered that in paper, fabric or foam depending on the wing... and then hotglued feathers on to them.

many people attach the wires to a "backplate" sort of thing, and then corset that into their costume, etc.

I'd love to here some different ideas or methods however. people are often secretive about wing construction

I agree. They really are.
If I spent a long time figuring it out all on my own, I might be, as well, you know?
