View Full Version : crossplayer vs. Hair cut

For crossplayer, you may need to get hair cut to make yourself look like a boy ^^. so how you tell the people how to cut your hair?

Karisu-sama
03-01-2003, 07:49 PM
Don't ask me - I'm a wigs-only crossplayer, LOL

My real hair is elbow length - but super-fine; it totally disappears under a boy-length wig.

I might suggest telling them you WANT a boy-style cut. It's not as crazy as some people might think - it could be a "fashion" thing.

oops I think I should add this...my mom hate me cut my hair short ^^ll parents always the problem....

Oh no! But you are old enough (21) to get your hair cut if you want to, aren't you? Besides, many anime boys often have long-ish hair already (like past their ears), it won't necessarily look "like a boy" when not crossplaying!

If you cut it short, maybe they have to decide they still like YOU, if not necessarily your hair length. ~_^

(Hmmm... since I am the parent in MY house, I will let MY kids cut their hair if they want to *makes mental note*) ^^

I cut my hair short once. Its actually easier to manage and I think I got more compliments %_%. But I don't know, I just like my hair longer. But its no big deal. Its whatever makes you happy I say!

Sure looks good cross-playing too!

Don't cut your hair for crossplay, cut your hair because you want to, for everyday purposes.

I use wigs when short hair is in order (my hair is really long, down to my bottom, and can still be tucked into a wig), and if you're not sure you want short hair for every day, maybe you should go that route.

Moreover, short cuts can be styled boyishly or in a more feminine way (like pixie cuts, with shiny barettes etc.) so short does not have to mean you'll look like a boy.

I for one really like really short hair on girls, I think it's very chic.

I don't think boy cuts look good on all girls. If I got one, I'd be sorry.

I only use wigs, except for my Mana and Duo costumes. By the time I actually wear the Duo costume anywhere but to school, my hair will be REALLY long.

I was going to cut it for my Count D costume, but I can't bear to part with it now. So, wigs for me.

I think wigs are more practical, usually. And cut your hair for YOU. Not for a costume.

Don't worry it's only hair. It will grow back. Of course this advice is coming from a guy who shaves his head:D

I depend on wigs, but I need to colour my hair black to wear my Lulu wig.. because I wear it so the bun is more on the top of the head, but with that you can see the back of my hair, and if I have black hair it will blend in. lol

You think it's hard for a woman to tell the hairdresser she wants her hair cut like a boy's?

Think about what it's like for a man to tell the hairdresser he wants his hair cut like a girl's. :P

In the end, I just couldn't face the embarrassment. So I cut my own bangs in my hotel room for AX '02. They looked okay, I guess...

me, even for a short haired girl costume i woudl still use a wig. i woudl suggest not cutting your hair for crossplay...like everyone else is suggestin do it for you, and if ya wanna go as short haired char...a wig works wonders. is also less lasting for if they botch something when they cut it ^^;;;;

Iori E

I wasn't worried about botching my hair. After AX, I cut most of it off so that I had short hair. I realized during the con that my big head can't fit in wigs if I have all that hair stuffed into it. :P

I pretty much agree. Not all girls look good with short hair.

> if I have black hair it will blend in

You could just spray it black if you're not sure you want to dye it black... because you can't get black out unless you grow out your hair. But then your hair is probably short so you might not care.

As for asking hairdresser, I know Kham brings pictures of the characters she wants to cosplay to her hairdresser and asks her to replicate the cut. Works great.

I cut Katan's hair from an artbook picture too, and I'm no hairdresser... so it's not that hard.

> I pretty much agree. Not all girls look good with short hair.

That's a given. Not all girls look good with long hair either. Nothing looks good on everyone. ><

even though i'm about to graduate college, my parents still won't let me cut my hair like a guy's.. so i resort to wigs.

Most of the time, wigs are a lot better looking (and more anime-ish) than real hair.

^_^;;;

I take in a couple good pictures from all sides of the cut (and/or dye I want) and hand them to my hairdresser. And then.. she duplicates it. ^_^;;; She's awesome. However with the different costumes I'm doing now I need to use wigs too. ^_^;;

I'd hafta agree with wigs being better than cutting your hair. You wouldn't want to do something to yourself just for one costume. Though the only crossplayed I've done has long hair... if ever I did short hair I'd just stick to a wig ^_^.

Ah, Khamryn - you have the perfect cute androgynous look to do crossplay *is slightly jealous* ^^

The only problem with long hair plus wig is that if your own hair is really thick, that may really make a wig look "stuffed", even if you DO manage to get all your hair under it. Some women I know would like to wear wigs, but they are not willing to cut their own very long super-thick hair to about (girl-style!) shoulder-length or so to make it possible.

I even know one guy with long hair who has trouble with wigs because of that. ^^

I can wear any wig if I have short hair!

I had the very opposite happen with my cosplay.
i had really shorty hair, then needed long hair for my kefka costume.

i hate wigs.

so i decieded to grow my own...
so it grew... and grew..
and since my hair grows so slow it took about three years before i even liked the length for the costume...

now i'm afriad to cut it jsut incase i wanna do something else with long hair. @_@

Hrm, well if I get a wig or not for a crossplay it all depends on the characters hair. I myself really like to use wigs a lot, I get my friend to style them for me too. I just stick them on my head and she cuts the hair cut. And wigs area lot easier to keep nice... I know if I left my hair alone for 5 minutes in the kind of humidity we have down in Florida I'd have an afro. And afros are not what I'm shootin for.

And if ya wanna cut your hair for a costume, make sure you can live with it for a few monthes. Personally my hair is shoulder length now and i can't stand it. Doin' a chop job this weekend actually. And if you're one of those people who doesn't like ta cut off their uber long hair so they can fit it in a wig, or vice versa, try thinin' it. That seemed to help my friend who has bookoos of hair. Me, I just stuff all my hair in a knee high and count how many people think the uber short wig is my real hair.

LOL, I get that a lot too - people thinking a short wig is my real hair. No, my real hair IS down to my elbows, and a VERY dark brown (fairly close to black). But it's so fine it can disappear completely flat under a wig cap.

I really like wigs. Instant change of look, usually looks real (that is if it's a "natural' color), holds up great in humid or sweaty conditions (like while dancing!) and I get to keep my real hair the way it is. Muahahaha!!!

I'd usually suggest wigs if you don't want to end up having a boy cut for a few months. I try to stay away from cosplaying characters that have short hair, period. This is because I don't want to cut my hair short and because my hair is very uncooperative. My hair's level of poofiness is about on par with Kagome's from Inuyasha. My hair is also thick, so stuffing it under a wig doesn't really work, either.

From a guy's stand point.. I couldn't crossplay if it wasn't for wigs. I'd really just look like a boy in a dress then ^^;; Sure a wig will be a little more than your average hair cut, but it saves you the trouble of dying it X color and cutting it to X style. And if you're a multi costume person like I am, that won't work for all your costumes most likely. The only compatible haircut IS the long hair. For the female costumes many girls simply have straight, long hair of a certain color. Buying my long black wigs has been very beneficial, since I've used them for many costumes with little modification. Guys in anime tend to have similar hair, some more so than others. Short black hair is obviously very common ^^; As is the long blonde hair for the bishy types, and long black, etc... so if you're worried about the cost of wigs in the long run, you can try to plan out your costumes accordingly.

About real hair length.. I had my hair a bit pass my shoulders for a while, and it's just drove me nuts. Yesterday, I had it all cropped off. So now it's very short and very wig compatible! No more fighting to keep my odd length hair up under that Mizuho wig like I did at Ushicon ^^;; A couple pictures of me announcing the cosplay shows my hair in the back lol ^^;;;

I think I found the character I will probably cosplay, but I was wishing to ask yall something.

The character is in my gallery and she has shorter hair. I cannot wear wigs because I have very sensitive skin. The one time I wore a hat to school during cold weather my entire forehead broke out into little bright red patches that lasted for weeks.

Do you think I should simply not do the character or go without a wig?

The Japanese rarely use wigs. I don't think anyone will really care that much if you don't use one. On the rare chance someone happens to say something, just cite what I said to them and say you're doing it their way =3

> The Japanese rarely use wigs.

I don't know about that... I have seen a lot of Japanese cosplayers with wigs... all the Clouds, Sephiroths, Cammys, the Angel Sanctuary cosplayers, and the Suikoden ones too...

The ones I have seen without wigs more often than not had hair that matched their character's...

The majority of the pictures I have saved show no wigs, there are some with wigs like the Clouds and such. But to me, it just seemed like a lot of them didn't bother with wigs.

I think that in Japan, like here, there's a fair amount of people who wear wigs and a fair amount of people who don't. over the past few years, people are getting more into the aesthetic aspect of cosplay versus the fan aspect, and so more detailed costumes - and people wearing accurate wigs - are showing up more and more.. everywhere.

if you want to cut your hair, cut your hair. if you want to use a wig, use a wig.

I, personally, prefer wigs, because my hair is EVIL, and regaurdless of what I (or others) do to it, it never, ever holds the style. EVER. at Ani-magic it had a good half-hour of teasing and a third of a can of Aqua net in it and it DIDN'T STAY POOFY. X___X;; wigs are less evil and generally stay once you style them (if you do it right). so, with wigs, you don't have to restyle your hair every time you do the costume - just pop on the wig.

Urk...I have short hair (down to my chin) but it's so poofy and thick I have to struggle to get it under a wig. *sighs* I have to figure out a way to not only get my hair under a wig, but to also make it look natural. I'm still wondering how some people get wigs to look like it's not a wig (how they hide the hair-line, etc). ;_;

Use a wig cap.
If you can't find one, use pantyhose.
No, I'm serious.
That's how I do it.

And I've actually taken to shaving of the "widows peak" at the front of my hairline because I hate it (for one) and it's easier to make the wig look better without it there. ^^

For a "natural" hairline, some wigs (like my daughter's Kenshin wig - $50, aie!! Darn kid better appreciate it!!) are made with the front hair being embedded in a fleshtone latex instead of sewn to weft like the back part - looks reasonably good at the hairline, and you can get a great "natural look" part line out of it too.

The professional way, expecially for styles where the hair is combed back, is to have your own hair be the same color as the wig and then put the wig just BEHIND your hairline, combing the real hair at your hairline back over the wig edge. That's what they did for all those Lord of the Rings actors - it looks so totally real, but it's NOT!

yeah, they're all sneaky and uber talented like that, tricking all Orlando Bloom's fangirls into thinking that was his real hair. XD;;

... ok, sorry, that was totally off topic ...

all of my wigs without straight bangs in the front have the fake scalp thingy in it, and it looks real. everyone thought my long black wig was my real hair.. I shocked a lot of people when I came down with my normal hair on Sunday at AX. lol. ^^;

hm i havn't gotten mine cut short in say... 8 months, but i usually get it thinned and layered. I do tie my hair back and pin it up for the heck of it, dun matter if you look like a guy or girl from the back, it's the front that matters. Even with my hair down, i've fooled alot of girls into stalking me at cons... it's kinda frightening when i'm kissing / hugging my bf and others start going all starry eyed on ya.

well, I shaved my head a while back (about june). I've pretty much just let it grow out since, except for trimming the collar area once in a while (to prevent a mullet look). Now my hair is ....well you can see my gallery. It's shaggy like squall, but I can do so many other styles that look feminine.

I'm getting mine cute real soon.. I used to have long hair and it was kinda thick.. it was almost to my butt.. but it's hard to style it.. I usually just put it up in a ponytail.. People use to call me ponytail girl cause that's what I always had. but now it's way shorter and i love it and it doesn't take long to dry.

Yes, don't dye your hair black unless you want to have black hair all the time. I do. But I haven't dyed it since November 2002, and it looks weird. Cool in a way. But I have this hair that goes from medium blond up top, to black at the tips which are above my shoulders.

As for cutting your hair. Don't unless you want it for sure. I had bum length hair and I got it cut to my shoulders. But about a month ago, my borthers rats ate my wig for my Rei [Beyblade] costume, and so I cut my hair about chin length and layered. heh. it looks really crap, especially at the front. But my hair grows REALLY fast, so it is already shoulder length. ^^

I would only use wigs for me if I did boyish hair, but that is because I have a fat head..... and I look weird.

I should mention I cut my hair because it is VERY VERY thick and it was down to my butt, and I had constant headaches because of it.

Short hair is the best, I think. A lot of girls don't realize they would look good with short hair, too. A boy's cut...you shouldn't have any trouble with a hair stylist knowing what you want if you say that. You can probably even find a picture in one of the magazines lyin about. Also, you can get a numbre of different styles out of short hair with some mousse or gel, or just letting it grow out slightly different in one area. I cut my own hair too, so it's even easier.

However, now I am wanting to grow my hair out a little...in a short, chunky bob or something...the growing out, I can tell, will be absolutely hellish for me since I HATE having longer hair...but...I need a change. I just decided I'll dye it all sorts of colors in the grow-out phase.

maow.

I didn't cut my hair just for cosplaying, but mainly because I have a busy lifestyle and wanted some change. It does fit in quite nicely though if I want to crossplay. I used to have hair that was shoulder length O.o

I wouldnt suggest cutting your hair just for crossplaying, due to regrets later on. If you do decide to get it done though, most hair dressers are knowledgeble in the area of short hair cuts. make sure you know what you want when you go in there though. ^_^ Hope my advice helps.

I KNOW I'd look great with short hair, and especially a short boy's cut (I have the wigs to prove it) - but under ONE condition: that I have thick hair.

And I do NOT have thick hair. ;_; It would just be short and flat. ;_; And no, I don't have TIME to gel / mousse /whatever body into it everyday. I need "wash-blowdry-'n-wear" hair.

So I leave it elbow-long, thin and I guess "stylish"... clip it up when it bothers me, weighs nothing, disappears completely under any wig...

I'd LOVE to have short thick hair, like my avatar. ;_;

I have thick hair and I'm considering getting it cut in a quasi-boy's cut. But I'm buying a wig already for Haku, so buying another wig isn't really an option. xX; Would blue dye stick at least for a few days in unbleached hair (I decided bleaching it wouldn't be that good of an option, because I don't want bright blue hair). ?_?
