She's based out of Hong Kong but her shipping is fast and she's a great seller. She also has a Yahoo Auction page (http://user.auctions.shopping.yahoo.com/user/hongkongcolor) that she updates regularly. Here is an auction for the wig I just described. (http://page.auctions.shopping.yahoo.com/auction/72788952?aucview=0x30)

Firefly Path (http://www.firefly-path.com) makes some great affordable Chii ears but I'm not sure if they make the hair beads. Also, I have three or four Chii pictures in my user gallery (http://images.cosplay.com/showgallery.php?cat=3282&ppuser=113&thumb=1) if you haven't already chosen a costume yet! :D Good luck with whatever you decide!

There is also this really nice lady named Lauren willing to make a pair of chii ears...I own a pair and they are really nice looking. she makes them out of foam and uses a headband to hot glue it together...yes hot glue guns work wonders just don't burn your self or aiye...it hurts.....anyways her website is:

http://www.wingless.net/milk

Her's cost $16.00+$4.00 shipping...$20.00 not bad....I shelled it out and it was well worth it....

OR you could make chii ears yourself.

INGREDIENTS:
Craft foam (33 cents a sheet at walmart) in pink and white
Hot glue gun
Hot glue
headband
scissors
some paper and a pencil for practice

Experiment! Have fun! Try something new!

-.-; can someone please sticky a chii ears topic? -.-;

Try for the wig basic fabric and the ears plaster, works all the time the plaster I mean that way you can paint it any colour then again the ebay help is the best...

I bought my Chii wig from www.witchwigs.com It's 1 of the Cher ones ^_^ And I made my ears from sculpey! It works really well considering that it's light, but it took several tries to get it right. Then, I just attached it to a head-band with hot glue ^_^

Thanks, Nessa *-*
Right now I offer easily paintable ears mounted on a headband for $35, and the hairbeads for $15. I've thrown mine on the ground before to test them and they are seemingly unbreakable ^^;.
For more info, you can visit my shop on www.angelicstar.net
Thanks!

I know that this thread is a little old, but...

I found the official Japanese Chii ears and Hair Spools on sale at:

http://www.animegamers.com

However, the ears are on order, I think. It's a bit pricey, but if you're looking for the best, it doesn't get better than the official, ne?

Ah, and I second the notion for the wig from www.witchwigs.com! I got mine from there, and it's of very very high quality--it's worth the 60 dollars, for sure!

geez! those official ears are crazy expensive!! the only thing that makes them different from the other ones ive seen made is that theyre plastic, but big deal, i think foam ones look better anyway ^.^

yayahan
04-03-2003, 03:07 PM
I have seen some foam ears that looked fantastic. But overall, since Chii's ears are robotic and therefor plastic, it only makes sense to go with plastic ones. ^_^

katrinastrife
04-03-2003, 05:45 PM
Hmm.. I've heard that official ones, or ones made out of plastic, hurt after a while. They _are_ crazy expensive, and angelicstar is right: Chii is a robot, so she'd naturally have plastic ears. But, because they're soooo expensive, I'd say foam is the best way to go, unless you're planning to make many many Chii costumes.... Or you've gotta have it perfect...

I'm personally not too fond of foam ears cuz hers have more curve to them thats hard to get with the foam tho i've seen peeps do it well.

Until I got the official ears n hair dingies I used paperclay. Its very lightweight, sands soooo easily, is durable and if you need to add more when it dries it bonds to itself. I believe the website is paperclay.com tho I get mine at Micheals.

I just mold, sand, prime, wet sand with a really smooth sandpaper n spraypaint. Its a bit of work but I use it for most of mah molding. the half corset thing on mah armored hikaru is made of it...beat it against the wall and it didn't break. oh and for the hair bead i molded em around a thick pen n slipped it off when it was dry.

I tried my hand at making a pair of foam ears. Yeah. Not doing that ever again. Eugh, they came out horrible.

The plastic ears, in my opinion, look so much better. They are solid, smooth, and 3D, and small details like that count. Yaya's look the best; they are large and accentuated, drawing attention to Chii's best feature.

04-04-2003, 06:40 AM
yes, plastic HURTS! ;-;
i got the official ones, and after wearing them around for Katsucon, it hurt to put my head down on a pillow to sleep! T_T

im not sure which looks better, but i wish i got foam now >_<

ChibiRinoa
04-04-2003, 07:34 AM
would it be worth it to take the plastic ears off of the headband they come on and put them on something less painful? because so far they seem nice, but are actually quite painful ^.^;; is it the headband thats tight?

yayahan
04-04-2003, 11:22 AM
*pokes Stacey* Thank you for saying so, that makes me feel really good about them ^^
I'm about to take some good close-up shots of them, all done and ready to ship. Hairbeads included.
Since late 2002, I have sold over 15 pairs so far, and recently have been shipping to Europe as well. I'm just glad people are interested in them ^_^.

Hey, I just bought a 45" Blonde wig here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15737&item=2822609796

It's not as long as Chii's, but it's one of the longest I've seen so far ^_^ And one of the prettiest for that size too. A bit pricy however though...

...heh I just remembered, i'm also going to have to trim it x.X Hope I don't mess up.

I would really highly reccomend watching on ebay for the wig that HuongStar reccomended. I ordered the same on and it is beautiful. It is a sort of yellow-ish white with a slight wave to it. It is soft and of nice quality. Plus it is very long... i didn't measure it but it is well past my waist. The seller is very friendly as well, so keep an eye out...

So why is this thread a sticky anyway?

Just to stay on topic, um... The official stuff is always expensive, be it Chii ears or Inuyasha supplies, but it doesnt always look as good as it can. I suppose personal preference prevails there.

yaya - how did you go about making the mold for the chii ears? I've attempted to make a mold with little success because of the hollow shape... i can only get the outer portion *g*

katrinastrife
05-26-2003, 12:02 PM
I think the thread is sticky because chobits is really popular, and they don't want a dozen ear/wig threads...

Just to stay on topic, um... The official stuff is always expensive, be it Chii ears or Inuyasha supplies, but it doesnt always look as good as it can. I suppose personal preference prevails there.

I think that's true. I like how the official ears look, and all, but I've seen fan-made ones that do look a lot better. Indeed, preference...

As for molds, I think angelicstar would know a bit about that. I think she uses a mold for hers... right?

This might be a little off topic, but I just finished the ears for a Jima costume Im making, and using a small hand walkietalkie i had, I made a mold out of sculpy and cast it in 2 part epoxy. I'm sure you could do the same for the Chii ears, just 2 pieces and then connect them with a hinge or something. Pics here:

I just made some chii ears myself. I carved them out of owens corning foam but I used my official ears for the pattern to trace around. All I need to do is sand them a tad then cover them with something then paint. I haven't decided to use bondo, fiberglass or just plain old rigid wrap plaster strips. seeing how we need them to be light maybe the plaster wrap? How heavy does bondo and fiberglass get on something small like chii ears?

And a custom wig site that specializes in wigs for cosplay:

Chi is listed in the Frequently Requested Characters list. The wig is pricy but the stuff she makes. @_@

i am using soft sheet metal and painting it for my dark chi costume. I have made them to where they open up and i put wires in them so it looks just like the real thing!! so when you open the ears you pull the wires out and then when your done press the circle on the side and the retract back in to the ear and close. when im done i think i will open a comission for a cheap price...everyone needs persacom ears!
what do youse guys think?

Yes, definately. Smooth-on rocks. (they're a little pricey though).
Also pick up a guide to prop building, there's a few available on Amazon.com. Depending on your cost level and skill level, there's a ton of chemicals that will do you good.

We're still on hold for casting our own, 'functional' chii ears, with the TONS and TONS of orders we've got already, we haven't had any time to test out new chemicals or molding techniques. If we get them up anytime soon, I'll post it for everyone to see. We wanted to have functional ears ready for Anime Central, but ran out of time and had to go with craft foam ears. Molding them is easy, but having them actually open with the data ports is much more fun! ^_^

btw, kitsune, post some pictures of the sheet metal ears, I'd like to see how they came out!

I am putting orders for Hairbeads on hold right now because I need to make new molds for them. The unpainted (or painted if I have the time) ears are available still from my website, and if you want the hairbeads to go along with the ears, I can send them out as soon as I have new pairs.

How exactly do you make Chii ears out of foam? It seems like it would be kinda difficult to shape them.

I paid i think 56 for mine. Got them from usanime.net I don't think they have them anymore though. If you know of anyone who's going to japan I'm sure they can check cospa or other shops there, they should have them. I think the offical ones look the best and more chii like than the foam ones and the like. I did make a mold out of the official ears and we threw some of that expanding foam into the molds and cast them that way. They're very light weight and can be hollowed out. When filled with putty and sanded and painted properly they look good. My friend is still working on those i think, we did make like 6 or 7 pairs i think too.

actualy i make my beads outa clay and then ut them eather in a kentel or the oven depending on what clay i use.
then for the ears i have been using foam core. but im now starting to mold my own ears which are more heavy, but they look much much more better then the foam ones.
the only hard thing is maken a ear look just the same as the last one.

Where did you guys get the plastic for Chii's ears. (The ones that made it out of the plastic stuff) or/and where did you get your molding clay stuff. I tried looking for it today but couldn't find any, just found some Foam which i bought, oh and also, how did you guys attach your headbands to your ears? and where, like inside or ontop, etc. Thanks, and sorry for so many questions lol

I was thinking, if I did a persocon ear set, I'd want the right ear to have a small flash drive in it (they're getting relativly cheap) and a USB extention attatched to it that would come out, and be able to plug into a computer... and then I could download files....

Thanks for the guide you had on foam btw (even though it was in spanish, I understood enough to do one myself, I think... ::crosses fingers:: if I ever decide to do a persocon... though I probably wouldn't be Chii, but some other random unit of my own design)

Ok, I say the best way to go is to buy the FREAKIN' OFFICAL PAIR!...lol but for those of you who are trying to save on money, or because the offical Chii pairs are no where to be found in stock, just make your own for now out of Sculpy (can be found at Michaels or your local craft store), a head band, a hot glue gun, and LOTS of pratice and patience. I don't advise buying foam pairs from people because it's kind of a waste. Clay ears are much better looking and easier to shape. Here's a photo of the offical pairs so you can follow the shape and such ((as for me I am wineing that I can't have them))

I made a chii costume last year and just made the ear out of foam. They were alright but not really good enough imo. I'd be willing to pay for the official ones if I could find them in stock anywhere. The last time I saw them on ebay was months and months ago and I've been looking every day. So this year I'm going to try to make some out of resin. This site has some help infor on making resin molds: http://www.alumilite.com/howto.cfm

These all seem like they'd make good chii wigs:

My question is: what do you think is more important, having the lenth of chii's hair or having a better quality wig even if it is shorter?

quality.

godiva wigs are REALLY BAD from what i have heard!

they tangle horribly and pretty much can be used only once...

and you can TELL that someone is wearing a cheap wig..

a bad wig can ruin a costume's overall appearance.

I found this web page here http://ai25cosplay.tripod.com/aichanscosplayai/id3.html to have some good pattern information for anyone looking at making their own ears for persocons.

I have what I think is going to be a good pattern that I got from the white part of the above site, and then took the cone making idea from Hitomi Chan's tutorial (http://homupeeji.webcindario.com/orejitas.html) and modified it slightly to work for me. If you're curious as to how I made the pink zone, instead of Hitomi Chan's half circle into a cone, I did a full circle to get the shape I needed and then cut out the pizza slice part that overlapped so that I wouldn't have to deal with extra foam/extra weight.

I then worked on how they fit together and the sizing of it all...

My end result (after about four tries on paper for each part) is what I think will be a pretty good pattern... of course the real test will be my going and making it on the foam ;)

*Grins* I used one last year. Yeah, it got pretty tangled, due to it being so darn long (down to the back of my knees). But it was really good quality. It's those wigs that are usually over $150, but I got it really cheap. It looks nice too. A lot of people thought it was real hair. ^_^ I'm using it again this year (for my EGL), but I'm going to cut it a bit shorter. It all depends on the quality of the wig if you can use it once or twice. As for my wig, I sure can use it a bunch of times if I want. (The only problem is having to detangle it by the end of the day.)

For the Persocon ears, I used foam. It looked nice, but not as nice as the official ones. But still, people liked them. XD

I actually still haven't decided if her hair really is cut in an upside down V or if it only looks like that but it's really just that her is seperating/parting in the back but is all the same length.

It looks like it is cut in these pictures:
http://www.deredere.dds.nl/Chii/Chii1.jpg
http://www.d-satomi.com/images/gk/chii.jpg

But it looks like it's just kind of parted in these:

I don't think her hair is "cut" that way, its just how it parts. My hair sometimes parts slightly like that if I leave it in pigtails for days at a time, the hair just naturally wants to lay parted but never to the extreme of chii's hair. Anime hair doen't act like hair in real life.

LaPetiteSalope
04-09-2004, 08:38 PM
The ladies in CLAMP created Chii's hair kinda look like an upside down V to sybolize her with the bunny in the story "The Town with No People" if any of you read the manga or seen the anime. I say it is just a part, but it may be layered to look like an upsidedown V. Its basicly up to the people who cosplay them anyways. I just think its a better idea if they just try and part the wig other than cut it cause it may backfire on them and look retarted. O____o;;

Dose anyone have instructions on how to make Chi ears?

I don't know about instructions....i don't really thin there are any :) but i have been trying to make them out of those foam sheets, that seem to be the most popular material, but i just don't like how they are coming out....ie---trying to make something flat, curved.

BUT i wanted to share my latest idea and see if anyone has tried it and problems they have encountered. I am trying to mold them using "mold magic" by Crayola. It is a VERY light weight foam like molding compound, air dries and you can paint it. I threw together a quick test ear last night (hair spools too) and i THINK it will work out. I have read others trying femo (sp) or sculpty with no good results. This seems a very good solution.

Try it out if you want, or does any have any thoughts on it if you have tried it.

I tried making them out of sculpty, and failed miserably. I then followed the tutorial on how to make them out of foam sheets that is linked in here (the one in spanish) and they came out alright. I can't read spanish but the pictures were helpful.

Just to let everyone know. That Crayola Model Magic is GREAT!!! My test ear is coming out fantastic!!! Not only did it dry overnight, but even after it has dried it is still flexable....you can't reshape it...but it has some give, like the foam sheet, so it is comfy to wear. And i can't belive how light it is!

Tonight i tested sanding it. And it was just fine. I used 400p sand paper. Smoothed it out very very nicely.

And i JUST painted it and i really can't belive how great it looks. With a bit of practice and really putting my mind to it i am SURE i can make these look just like the "offical" ears, but lightweight and much much cheaper.

A pack of model magic cost me 2.99 and you should get more then enough for one set of ears and hair spools too. The paint is .89 cents a bottle (you won't need more than one in each color) adn i got a clear gloss coat to make it look really shiny...but the was 2 bucks i think.

Then just hot glue (low temp) to a hair band or use 14g (i think) craft wire for under the hair.

I hope this helps....i know that i have been looking for tips, but all i needed was a walk through the craft store!

I'm new here and wish to make chii ears.

I want mine to open and close, and since I use Advair, I have many discarded 'Diskuses' (ex: http://www.devicelink.com/pmpn/archive/03/10/0310p12a.jpg - when fully opened: http://www.canadianprescriptionsavers.com/druginfo/images/advair1.jpg )that I am going to try and convert into Chii ears, because they not only open and close in a similar fashion, but can contain a retractable cord or cable (ex: http://www.ziplinq.com/retractable-cable-usb.html )I will place inside. That way, I can pull the cord out easily for display. Also, the diskuses have this tech look to them, especially when the mouth peice is removed.

I'm undecided on whether I'm going to create the ears' shells that go over the Advair diskuses out of foam sheets of Crayola Model Magic.

A comment on the Crayola Model Magic: If allowed to dry completely, this stuff can be bounced off of walls with little more that surface damage. I know, I made 'prototype' ears out of it and then threw them around. It was loads of fun -- I plan on using the stuff for foam peices to shape wigs and stuff.

When I make them, I'm going to take photos and such and post my step-by-step process on my webstie.

A question: If I wanted to paint my Crayola Model Magic ears, what type of paint should I use after sanding?

I think the Model Magic would work with your idea cause it is way more flexable to work with than the sheets...but i am in LOVE with this stuff.

Any old acrylic paint will do. I myself used the following:
Delta Creamcoat- White, Fuchsia (i like the darker pink but they have lighter ones) and Gloss Interior Varnish from the same company with if for use with acrylic paint.

FYI---A GREAT foam glue (used when messing with the foam sheets AND the Model Magic) is Aleene's Foamtastic. Holds foam great...a bit pricy though.

I must say you have some very very nifty ideas!! I hope it works well for you.

There is a site called Archonia.com that sells the offical chis spools and seems to be restocking the original chi ears
http://www.archonia.com/index.php?id=835&page=news

They are located in Belgium so it might take a while to reach you.

Anime and Comics Japan also sells them but their catalog is in Japanese
http://www.fromnippon.com/anime/
If you want to order them from this site you will have click cosplayer and then scroll down until you find the character ち. Then you will have to click ちぃの髪飾り and it will direct you to the items description and price (which is in yen). Then you can just cut and paste the items info into the order form. It will be shipped from Japan which is farther away than Belgium so I suggest you go with Archonia.com (plus the whole ordering in Japanese thing is a little tricky)

I hope this helps, good luck on your costume! :)

Wicked idea! If the offical ones are so expensive and hard to find, why don't they open and have wires like THE REAL CHI EARS?.. heh.. thats just my oppinion*... I think I'm going to make mine open and close and have wires come out.. don't forget that Perscoms have loads of cable coming out.. not just one or two.. Not that that will look bad, I just mean if your going to go through all that trouble to make it open and close and have a button to make it retact in the ear.. might as well have as many wires as you can.. and you can just phone wires... the cord is small and you can just buy wire and cut it as long as you want... hehe.... Now.. does anyone have an idea on what I can use to make to wires retract and come out?... humm... Thanks for all those links on those wigs, and ears!... hehe

Hey everyone. I fished my Chii ears and Hair Spools! Hand molded out of Crayola Model Magic and painted and gloss coated! The Hair Spools came out really nice i think, they were kinda the hardest to get right. If you want to see them head over to
http://ladysith13.deviantart.com/

I look horrible, but my friend that is ACTUALLY cosplay Chii is adorable, i will be taking pics of her next weekend and posting them there so keep an eye out for those too. Feel free to comment with any and all questions, i am happy to help cause i know it is hard to find :) After a little break my next challenge will be Berserker Rikku armor, that i think will not be as easy!!!

I also found a site that has a great Chii wig for a GREAT price. I don't know of the quality, probably not a high quality wig, but it is good for someone on a budget (like me!) we deserve some fun too...

i am using soft sheet metal and painting it for my dark chi costume. I have made them to where they open up and i put wires in them so it looks just like the real thing!! so when you open the ears you pull the wires out and then when your done press the circle on the side and the retract back in to the ear and close. when im done i think i will open a comission for a cheap price...everyone needs persacom ears!
what do youse guys think?

...... that is the singel coolest thing i have heard of to do witch chobits in my life. I WOULD BUY THEM IN AN INSTANT! that's genius if you don't commission them i think i would try my hands at making them myself! wow i thought of being able to open them and have wires inside but retractable? but wouldn't they be a a bit heavy? oh can you give me a price quote? i want them so bad! -Aseret chii

I have seen some foam ears that looked fantastic. But overall, since Chii's ears are robotic and therefor plastic, it only makes sense to go with plastic ones. ^_^

You have point thier, she is a personacom so it does make sense making them out of plastic. I was think of making a Chii costume for Halloween this year casue I found a pattern that would be great for the bakery outfit.

How to make ears of Persocon?

This is a simple and cheap option to make your ears of persocon. You only need:

*

A white leaf of foame.
*

A pink leaf of foame
*

Glue (of preference some that dries express).
*

Scissors
*

1 m of wire (or means, depending on the thickness) or 2 limpiapipas.
*

Nylon thread or some delgadito means muuuy (of preference color bone or target).
*

MUCH PATIENCE

According to the size of your own ears it cuts foame white of the form that is seen in the illustration. It is like a ojito.

It cuts foame pink in form of average moon so that the pink part is greater than the white.
With the pink part you do a conito. If you please you can stick it or engrapar it so that one does not undo to you.

To the white part úntale glue

*
It sticks the two parts as it is seen in the illustration
The pink part within the white accommodates so that it is seen like in the illustration
When you obtain the wished position, detén the ear until the glue dries completely (for that reason is recommendable some that dries express).

If the glue takes much in curing it tries to leave to the ear under the leg of a table or some furniture so that it does not move and you must return to accommodate it.
It cuts 4 circles of 3 cm of diameter (approx.) and pégalos to the flanks of the orejitas (they seem fish heads ).
With the wire or limpiapipas you do a species of diadema, so that the wheels that are observed are left around your own ears and the others in your nape of the neck.
Here one is as it must be left diadema in your own head.

In order to accommodate the ears, you must do an orifice to them in the back part, the rose, to two centimeters of the target, and insert them.
Probably at the time of ponértelas they fall because in fact they do not have a support in the part of above. He is recommendable that him things some thread or means so that they stop in the superior part of your head. For this photography, as it were of test, I used sticky tape.

It depends upon how full the wig is. What you will be doing is parting the hair so it falls in the front. It's going to take lots of heat and patience to do this. On a low heat setting you will need to force the hair into falling that way. I did this method on a Sesshoumaru wig.

What I did was first part the hair and pull it forward so that way you have a layer that falls forward over the front of the wig and the rest is at the back. Then I cut it longer than I needed (remember to always do this because when you set them they will be a bit shorter than before so it's better to have them longer than too short =) ) then I took a curling iron and the one I have is more of a blowdryer type where the barrel has holes in it so it uses hot air to set things versus a heated metal element. You can also use a circlular hair brush and a blow dryer on low setting. I would first test this on the hair you cut off first just to make sure the hair can withstand a bit of heat. Every wig I have is of a plastic fiber but all can withstand heat all at various temperatures though. Then You can lightly brush it to ensure the style holds and spritz it with a tiny bit of hair spray to help hold it.

You could also order then off of ebay, but that in itself is risky. You could wind up paying way more than needed. But my friend Blaze did it, and she got the ring, necklace and ears to go with it. :D

After reading this entire thread, I've decided to make my third air of Chii ears, this time from Model Magic, then sand, paint and gloss them. Someone in the Utena cosplay thread mentioned coating her I think either Sculpey or Model Magic duellist ring with Elmer's glue as a protective coat/gloss. So, I imagine it would work for these ears - I'm just not sure if I'd need clear or if white would dry clear enough. Is regular acrylic paint (the cheap Delta Creamcoat stuff) good for painting it?

I think the foam is fine if you're really on a budget (those sheets are lik 50 cents and you can probably make more than one pair from them!) But they always end up being pointy, when Chii's have much more curve to them (not just on the bottom part, but at the top too! I wanna make mine look really real (well, as real as futuristic hot-girl computer ears can be >.>)

I got a cheap Chii wig that is pretty nice, but doesn't have the right length (it's about waist-length on me) - The Alice wig from Halloween-wigs.com. GASP! I just looked it up and they raised the price by $7.75! It was $31 when I bought it. I really am regretting not getting the Enchantment from Amphigory now, though. T.T

Well, I don't know if my cooperation is still useful but you can watch my tutorial of making Chii ears at http://homupeeji.webcindario.com/orejitas.html
is in spanish but there are pics of every step
If you don't like foam you can use another material and I don't recomend hot glue

what did you use for the spools? they look really nice. ^_^
(i think i read a rip-off tutorial or something of this before XD)

For the people who have worked with Model Magic (crayola) I was wondering, how do you get it smooth? Mine is very wrinkly since it decided to dry a little fast ;_; I was thinking of using a ghesso after it completley dried to make it smooth, after sanding it. But would that really make it uber smooth? @.@

CuteButDeadly

I sanded the model magic and then panted it. One ear is a little bumpy becuase I got impatiant but the other one is perfect.

Also I would love to see the metal ears that one member made.

I wouldn't say they were really wrinkly, but they did need some sanding. All and all I sanded each ear for about a half hour.

Care to elaborate?

well when things dry, you notice how somethings things aren't acutally flat they sometimes have little bumps and stuff. well i have woody putty/filler and all you do is spread it on there, use water to make it smooth and it dries and you just gesso over it and then paint
