yup my new obsession is Ryuk from Death Note and I need some help around the neck's "stiching" that goes into his chest it seems. Would it be easier if I just skipped it and hoped no one notices or buy all the theatrical makeup stuff to make it look like the stiches go into the skin. Oh yeah I'm using metal chain link cut in half for the stiching, and what material should I use for the shirl I have a pair of pants already (same ones I used for my Shuichi costume.) but the shirt in some pictures looks kinda mesh or sometimes it looks leather. *shrugs* I'm outa ideas with that.
Thank yous!

Well it really depends on how accurate you want it to be. Just make sure that if you are using broken pieces of metal, that you file down the edges and perhaps cover them with tape so that you don't cut yourself while you are wearing them. Make sure to search the make-up forums for latex.
I think the shirt is actually supposed to be his skin, so leather would likely be better than mesh.

ah yes filing I cant tell you how many cosplay malfunctions have caused permenant scarring on my flesh.
Leather? cool Thanks that will match the pants well too.

I'd look into, if you want to try ahdhereing the 'stiches' straight to your skin, try spirit gum, as I believe it's called. I saw a Shino cosplayer who used that to 'glue' bugs to their skin and the effect was awesome.
Kudos on wanting to do Ryuku though.

His staples or whatever they are...are a pretty defined part of his look...definitely a part of him that always makes me cringe ^^' If you care about it, do it. I personally would notice it if a Ryuk cosplayer didn't have it....I could understand not doing it because it might be difficult...but if you're up to giving it a shot, I'd say go for it...you'll be that much more awesome and spot-on a Ryuk!

Thanks right now I'm getting ready to make his belt buckle and other accessories. Model Magic should work.

No kidding. I'm working on Ryuk as my main costume myself.
I'm going to do the neck out of silicone, and imbed a combination of Ace bandage clips and jumbo staples into the flesh.
I'm doing the belt buckle out of pewter, but I'm a bit apprehensive about it.

(now that I've read this thread more closely:)
The problem with ryuk is that he is often stylized quite a bit different, especially in the color photos. As I interpret it, the shirt is not his skin, but instead a loose shirt that he clumsily stapled/nailed onto his flesh to keep it from falling down, like suspenders.
Sometimes he's grey, sometimes he's white, sometimes he's blue, sometimes he's purple. His clothing varies in color from black to blue to burgundy, likewise with his hair. I'm planning to go black with red highlights for the clothing, hair and feathers, and a blue-gray for the skin.
I've got no clue what I'm going to do to get that ragged look on the sleeves. and I'm having a heck of a time finding something to do for the wig.
Now that the anime has come out, there are many new and very nice reference photos. If you haven't checked it out yet, you should absolutely do so.
I've got a page of reference photos for my personal needs here (http://userpages.umbc.edu/~pg1/ryuk/).
