I was wondering who was intending on going? I think I might make this my first out of state con, but I'd like to know what the attendance is like and if the people are relatively nice ^^;;

Wow, I can't believe it doesn't have it's own thread. Weird. Anywho, I will definitely be going again this year. I went last year and it was a BLAST!

yeah, I know it's a pretty big con...so I was pretty surprised as well to not see it have it's own thread O___O;;

Ummm, so was the hotel host Double Tree last year as well? I wasn't sure how a convention works in an actual convention center ><;; I'm so accustom to seeing cons in a hotel...

Megacon is awesome. The anime presence has gotten bigger and bigger every year. Last year we really dominated it. XD I like the mix of sci-fi, it makes for neat variety, and the attendees seem to be less tweeny than some of the other cons I've been to.

Megacon is for the most part, a very large dealer room. It caters to scifi/fantasy, though has a rather good size anime presence. The last two years Jpop house brought bands to play, free with paid attendance to the convention itself.

Anime Sushi holds a huge anime costume contest, and on Friday/Sunday you can find other non-anime related events (last Megacon had Star Wars and Firefly/Buffy events).

The number of people attending rangers around the 25,000 mark, so on Saturday you can expect large crowding. The convention center is rather large, however they do have a tendancy to have the cheerleading convention next door.

As for hotels, the convention center is on International Drive, which has a MASS of hotels, ranging in prices. Your best bet would be the Quality inn next to the con-center. Its decently priced (80$ a night usually), and walking distance to the con (parking is a nightmare). If not, there is a trolly system that takes people up and down the street. Just make sure you're no farther then a mile from the con center, or else you'll have to drive.

The con doesn't stay open very late, since its mostly a dealer room. Thankfully, I-drive has MANY things you can do that are lots of fun for the night.

I hope that helps.

This will actually be the first Megacon I will not be attending in 6 years. I'm opting for Katsucon instead.

No, but I did stay there for FXShow and it is a GREAT hotel. It's not terribly far from the convention center, but definitely you'd need a taxi or something to get to the center from there, if you decided to stay there. I had my car, so I just drove.

I'll be going to Katsu next year, I need to get away from Florida for once, haha. Mega isn't one of my favorite cons, I prefer JACON, Metro, and AFO.

I'm planing on going for at least Saturday, and most likely sunday*to help save up for Metrocon*

I'm gonna try and Have my Kero Beros Finished by then to enter in the costume contest^_^.

And a quick little side note, KeyOfTwilight, myself, and a few other people were thingking of getting a booth/table and spliting the cost between everyone and have a kind of cosplay.com table so people can do art/commissions/props and whatever else we can come up with and be able to have kind of short shifts to work with....I know we have a thread floating around somewhere about it...*will find it later*

If all goes well over christmas break, I will be Shaak Ti. I am definitely going to be at Megacon all weekend again this year. I'm pretty sure I am also doing a table (but in independent press). I'm going to pay for the hotel costs and Stephen (Dark_Tiger) said he would pick up the table. It'll probably be mostly jewelry on my end, and props on his.

Hmmm, I love sci-fi/fantasy but I've never been to a convention that really "specializes" in it :D Now this all sounds so much more fun!

lucifer -- thanks for the tip, I'll definately have to see about a hotel closer to the convention center since I will be flying in from Texas and have no method of transportation (except what buses there are and what not) ~,~;; Cheaper is always better since it's just going to be me and my ex

I'm glad it's more of a sci-fi/fantasy merged with anime as well...that makes me happy ^^;; woo!

How was AFO this year? I was thinking about going to that convention as well next year :/

AFO was pretty good, I had lots of fun! It was a lot more crowded than in the past though, I think they should move to a bigger location. Not massively bigger, but the narrow hallways aren't exactly fun to navigate. Though, I do like how everything is easy to locate. And they have enough fun events to keep me occupied througout the weekend.

Wow Feb. is a really REALLY long time from now. ;-; But it is going to go really fast though. ^_^

I am going for sure. When the winter season hits down in florida is seems that no cons go on from October-february. So I need to get some con in me.

I have NO idea what costume I going to bring. In 4 months I will though. ^_^

I'm going, not sure who as though. It's awhile away so no worries. I was curious about Mega because it varies a lot. Anime to sci-fi to fantasy, should be interesting.
What kind of panels do they usually have? Like more anime or is it leaning to more sci-fi things?

Um, actually that's incorrect. Between October and February you have:

Amano's World* (mid Oct)
Disney's Not-so-Scary-Halloween (all of Oct)
Jaco Halloween Party (end of oct)
Anime South* (end of Nov)
FX-show* (mid January)

* are all conventions, where as the other two are excuses to cosplay in public :3

O_O;; I guess I'll have to check into Anime South as well, hopefully that's within the Orlando area.

Are there any cons in Miami? :D I need an excuse to go to Miami - haha

And as for MegaCon, so you can cosplay as an anime character and not have everyone ask who you are right? I mean, I know you'll always have questions, but I guess my question is, an anime cosplay is "accepted" right?

Anime South is up by Pensacola, which is in the panhandle.

I don't believe there are any cons in the miami areas, but I could be wrong.

Yes, anime cosplay is accepted at Megacon, just as much as comic book, movie, and other cosplay.

I saw some con listed on CosplayLab's events calendar that is in Fort Lauderdale, but it's multi-genre...still has anime events, though. I won't be going, since it's too far from me, and I don't really have any interest in going. That, and Chibi-Pa, which is in December, which could possibly be in Miami...I know for a fact it's somewhere down in southern Florida.

Well, I'm glad to know that MegaCon has a wide assortment of people ^^;; Now hopefully I can get enough money saved up to go.

Hime no Toki -- I've read about Chibi-Pa before and looked at their website, but it looks like it might be much smaller than the smallest con that I go to, just because I think it's new :/ I like small cons, just not too terribly small

I'll be going to Megacon this year if there's a band, but if not I'll skip it. Like Lucifer said, it's nothing but a huge dealer's room, and I can't justify spending so much money to go just to spend more money while I'm there.

I'll be at MegaCon again this year. I'll be a femme Spawn from the McFarlane comics. My friends are also going as comic characters. We may also go as anime characters on Fri or Sun. Depends on how everything pans out until then. And Admins, THIS CON NEEDS ITS OWN FORUM!!! It is a massive convention, and therefore deserves one.

Whoever said that? From what I've seen, those in Disney don't really care what you're wearing. There are tons of kids in Disney character costumes, people dressed as movie characters, and anything else you can imagine.

Hell two years ago they actually HAD Sora, Donald, and Goofy from KH, imported from Disney Japan.

Mickey's-not-so-scary Halloween is the only time you can wear costumes in the parks, at all. Otherwise, during the rest of the year, yes they don't want you in costume, because its against their policy.

There's a whole thread about this floating around the forums somewhere... but yes, it's against Disney's rules for guests to dress as characters (unless if it's a little kid or something) due to liability issues. But more on topic....

I think Megacon is my favorite con. Of course, I missed Jacon last year, so I don't know about that, but AFO, Mega and Metro are the ones I've been to so far. Amano's World is definitely next on my list. ^___^

I'm gonna try to make it up to MegaCon. Went in 2002, '03 and '05.

There is a con in the Lauderdale in November (3-5) called "Florida Super Con" which is an "everything" convention, at a hotel. I'll be attending that one too, in my Leon Belmont Crusader costume.

I am excited for Megacon already. This year's was my first con ever and it was lots of fun. I have my costumes all ready too...

-Friday I'll be repeating my Neo-Queen Serenity costume, but will have baby in tow as Small lady Serenity.

-Saturday--group cosplay with hubby and sister in law. We'll be cosplaying from Full Moon. I will be Full Moon (Eternal Snow costume), with baby as plushie Taketo, hubby will be full size Taketo, and his sister will be Meroko.

-Sunday we're doing a group again--Original Strawberry Shortcake. I'll be Strawberry, baby will be custard or pupcake (haven't decided which yet), hubby will be huckleberry pie, and SIL will be Raspberry Tart.

I'm excited that Megacon is broader than just anime so that I can do strawberry, though technically, it should count as anime since it was animated by Toei (though it was never done by Japanese VAs)

And Brio--still very interested in the table... I've been making ears like crazy... I'll have to hunt down that thread.

Jubilee?

You're making me want to go tackle trying to make Gambit. XD

Mereh... I'm thinking of going. Really wanting to, actually, but it will probably depend on money situations in the future. If I do go, however, and a certain Digimon group (*cough* <3) stills needs Jou, I'll be throwing that together. Maybe by then I'll also have Hexadecimal done... okay, it's a long shot, but I think I'd be better off premiering her at Megacon than Metro or AFO.

Ahck! But I can only worry about one con at a time! *rushes in circles for upcoming Amano's World*

it sucks that i can't go to megacon for all 3 days. I'll be there saturday and sunday, but i have to be at school friday, and my friends and i can't afford a hotel room for 2 nights when its only an hour and a half from home, and we would only be there the last few hours on friday night. so its only one night.

my hair isn't long enough for teacher right now, its only just past my shoulders, but hopefully it'll be the right length by february. The problem with mine is that it's thick! And kind of curly/wavy! thick hair is really tough to get good details with.

and teacher has a simple costume. it'll be a breath of fresh air between my amanos world cosplay and then organization XIII for metro 07--which my friends were going to do with me, but we probably wont for a while after...i'm making the costume anyways unless something wierd happens--

I was planning the Org XIII thing, but it's being done so much, I may scratch the plan. More opportunities for different group cosplays to force my friends into!!! *Evil laugh* Okay, I have already purchased the items required for my concept art cosplay, so I am seeing it as a **huge** possibility for either Friday, Sunday or both. I'm still wearing Spawn on Saturday; that is non-negotiable.

My friends are going as Surge, Man of Miracles and I have no clue who my other two friends are going as, but I'll ask next time I talk to them. I told them we all have to go as comic characters, because I always try to have a theme going for our costumes. Amano's World will be an acception. T___T

another great thing about megacon-the drive from home is too long to go back and forth both days, so even though it's only an hour and 1/2 away from home, we still get to stay there. its fun getting to hang out with your friends after a good day at the con instead of going home when your parents are asleep and you still have energy, but noone to talk to.

As Hime said earlier we do have them, Well I can describe where the SoFlo cons are since I've lived down here many years. The longest established free small convention we have is Yasumicon since 2003. That would have the biggest attendance of those we list for South FL imho. Yasumicon just happened a few weeks ago, it is an annual Miami convention last year was at Miccosukkee hotel part of the casino instead of on South Campus FIU, but they are normally held @ FIU South Campus on SW 8th St. and they held a Spring Japanese Anime Festival event also this past year. I am hoping they bring back Yasumicon to FIU since Mic. Resort was smokey and lacking in AC (::sweat drops::) and not comfortable for cosplaying. FL Supercon has moved locations and is in a bigger hotel in Hollywood, FL and this may be closer than Miami for you, though the event is newer. Chibi-pa before New Years is a Festival in West Palm Beach. I also commute for Metrocon, AFO, and Jacon (listed in order of preferrence) which I prefer to Megacon, despite Megacon being my 1st convention years ago. I am strongly considering skipping Megacon this coming year to get to more out-of-state cons.

You can do anime characters, video game, sci-fi @ Megacon etc. Anime South is in Destin, North FL you'd have to mapquest it to see how far.

Ha! Three full pages with almost five months to go. That's awesome.

Yeah, Megacon has really grown in anime presence. I remember five or six years ago, anime cosplay was done mostly on Saturday and was a minority (One Friday way back, I counted only two obvious anime cosplayers -- two older women doing Filia and Lina from Slayers). Last year, we dwarfed the regular sci-fi all weekend. I think some of those poor folks stayed mostly in the dealers room, because we overran the main halls. XD

I'm really hoping this will cause them to add a few more events, or maybe separate the costume and cosplay contests like AFO to encourage more skits.

Hime no Toki
09-07-2006, 12:40 PM
That's one thing I haven't found very desirable about MegaCon - cosplay and costume are bundled together, and people can't really perform a good skit in under 1 minute unless it's something VERY simple, or a monologue. Then again, Anime Sushi isn't in charge of the entire con, and I'm sure this is the reason why they have to limit it down to just one event. It takes up a lot of space and all, as well.

Anyhoo, I hope you all have fun at Mega. I'll be up at Katsu.

There are a bunch of us, but Florida Cons seem to be largely neglected on the main forums. It might be a nice way for all of us to keep coordinated on events and meetings and stuff, instead of hunting through things.

I would definitely ask though, final. Admin's pretty cool about stuff.

If we DID form a user group here, we could maybe look in to pooling for tickets for Megacon, which is rather expensive compared to most I've been to. Just a thought.

I used to live up in Orlanda, and have lots of friends still in the area.

While I can't say I can account for a crash-pad for anyone else, I do think we'd be able to find some cheap hotels in the area. The main problem is getting a reservation in time.

Also, Final, did you ask about the usergroup thing? Did Admin say yea or nay one way or the other?

And, does anyone have a link for the requirements of getting a usergroup forum?

I spoke with admin last night and they said they can get us our own forum, but not a forum for FL cons because then everyone else would want one for their own state too :/ It's the best I could do.

Was the host hotel the double tree last year? I mean...the double tree is a nice hotel...but I don't really like the idea of taking a shuttle - due to changing in and out of costumes (if I happen to do so) and also, I still prefer something a little cheaper :/

NOTE!!!

If you're looking for a larger sized room, go to THIS WEBSITE (http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/MCOSC)...

It's only .5 miles away from the convention center (which to me, is walking distance) and on top of which...you're paying $10 more for larger space...microwave...fridge...etc.

that is all. just a tip ^___~

EDIT: I'm not sure how long the rate will be there, but the rates usually don't change until the next day or so O__O;;

i'll definately tell my friends about that hotel. we can't afford to get more than one room, so the extra space is needed :toothy:

it'll really be worth the few extra dollars per person!

If you're gonna book, do it early! Merck and many pharmeceutical companies host conventions and gatherings in Orlando, especially in and around the convention center during February. The Rosen Plaza (directly beside the north side of the center) is sold out already, and I'm told that many other hotels within walking distance of the convention center will be full by January. =( I learned that the hard way last year. My mother works for the friggin' hotelier Rosen himself and she couldn't nab me so much as a cot in the boiler room because I waited too long.

That's an awesome deal. Normally I'd hesitate to book a hotel that wasn't directly next to the con, because Florida heat + costume = Suffering, but February is a beautiful time of year. Thanks for the link! I might book there too, now. :)

Woot on the forum!!

How much was Springfield Suites? Oo

Thought you were talking about the Peabody at first, which is literally across the street from the convention center, and definitely NOT cheap, lol.

thefinal

Springhill suites had a deal for $139.00 for 2 Queen Beds or same amount for one king - which includes a fridge, microwave, etc...

However, I know price might depend on what days...I put my booking days for Thur-Sun...

It's .5 miles away from the convention center so definately no shuttle XD I'm very hesitant on relying on a shuttle...sooo...this will work out nicely for me

EDIT - I actually just put in Fri-Sun and the rates are still good...sooo for those of you that want walking distance...lol...and NOT rely on a shuttle like me XD

i told my friends about it, but i haven't gotten much response from the people who would actually be using the room.

and we have to agree on where were staying because we have to split the cost...being broke sucks...

Actually, the shuttle services around the convention center are pretty reliable, if not crowded. They can't afford to NOT run well.

thefinal

-shrugs- well I figure if I have costumes and I want to change...I rather prefer walking distance. I really just don't want to be on a shuttle's time schedule ><;;

Be sure to look at a map for the hotel. Thing is, when they say the distance from the convention center, it literally means just distance.

Example, I found a great suite to stay at for megacon, it was only $100 a night and had everything. It was only .3 miles from the convention center. It was also on the opposite side of 1-4 (a six lane interstate highway), which you could NEVER cross on foot (you would have to take a tram around it practically to another street).

So always look at the maps of the location of the hotel to the convention center. I still stand firm, the best and cheapest place is the Quality inn next to the con center. Hell, they sometimes use their parking for the convention itself. The peabody (thought expensive) is right across the street from the convention center. I do not know the name of the hotel exactly beside the con center, but I know its a bit pricy (not as bad as the peabody however).

The hotel beside the left side (Rosen Plaza) is booked solid by Merck and medical convention folks. The other hotel directly on the right side is the Rosen Centre, which has only one type of room left at 300.00 a night. Feh.

I saw that people were looking for good hotels, so I have some advice if you are broke off your ass like I am. Last year I stayed at the microtel across from where Jacon and AFO are, and it was very nice. No frills or anything, but it is a good place to stay, and very cheap. If you wake up early enough in the morning (like we were able to last year's sunday) you can just park in regular parking. If you're too late you're going to have to park in overflow, but it's not a bad walk from the parking to the convention. I typically book really late, and I was still able to get rooms last year. I haven't checked yet for this year, but I'm sure they probably still have rooms available.

Even if you booked two rooms there, you would pay less than Springhill. I don't know the prices on the other hotels, though. I'm pretty sure the one I stayed at was $60/night.

Is Megacon a good "newbie" con. For, I've never really been to a large scale convention, and certainly not in cosplay?

And a tip for people driving in from out of town (or just driving in the area period), a map is your friend, the central florida area has a tendancy to have roads weave through each other willy nilly, and change names alot.

But as they say "getting there is half the fun" I guess.

Tia

It might be a bit daunting if it's your first convention. It's the largest convention in florida, I believe. My numbers may be off, but I think their last count was 23,000 people? It's still a very good con, though. If you stick to the anime portions of the convention, there are less people so perhaps that wouldn't be so scary. If you wanted to try going to a convention before Megacon, there is Metrocon: Amano's World in october and Anime South in november (I think?).

tsuoi_kaze

i think megacon was a great first con. it made it easier to go to other cons, because rather than going to a very small con and then assuming all cons are generally that size, showing up at a large con and it is so big its scary- you see how big it is and then going to other cons is like "hey! its not as crowded..." so the scaryness is eliminated.

Megacon 2006 was my first con ever and I had a great experience. I only went on Saturday, so it wasn't too overwhelming to go for a whole weekend or anything. Also, I was in the costume contest, so a lot of my day was spent in pre-judging and backstage. True I didn't see much, but it was a little less overwhelming that way.

I said earlier this year that I would not be attending MegaCon next year.

Well, I've reconsidered. Maybe because the guests are so cool. And because Sasuga Books was there last year. And because I want to see my friends and could use a social weekend off from work.

If I wear a costume, it will be either Ellone or Violet Baudelaire.

I was wondering, for those who have attended cons in GA, how Megacon measures up to Dragon*Con. Seems like the two are similar in that they are a multi interest con but Im not real sure about the fact that Megacon all takes place inside a single convention dealers room? Is it worth trying to go to? Is there as large of a crowd at Megacon as Dragon*Con?

If i am correct, D*C is more a fantasy con...which Megacon is a vast variety. I've never been to either, but that's my understanding, I think attendace at Megacon is a LOT. (20,000? im still unsure. I was researching the con and i saw that number somewhere)

I have been to Dragon*Con a number of years but not Megacon. Dragon*Con is a very large sci-fi and fantasy con but the gothic and costuming track has gotten huge while the anime cosplay seems to have gone down over the years. However, Dragon*Con takes place over the span of 4 hotels and I think has well over 25,000 visitors. Im just not too sure about only being in one dealers room for Megacon and the interest size for anime cosplays.

Dashren Nolan

I have attended both MegaCon and Dragoncon, and first let me say that it's pretty unfair to try and compare the two. DragonCon is the single largest multi-focus con in North America (it's been going on for like 20 years) that is geared more towards Comic Books and Sci-Fi than anything else. MetroCon is a much younger and smaller con that is 50% Anime and 50% Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Comic Book. Personally, I prefer smaller cons since Dragoncon was a bit too crowded for me and I like to just bum around at conventions, not to mention there's a much bigger focus on Anime.

So, if you prefer MASSIVE cons with lots of events and aren't a big anime person, MegaCon might not be the thing for you.

If you like medium-sized cons with more attention to Anime and more time to chill (not to mention an AMAZING guest list this year), then you should look into going. ^_^

I've been wanting to go to a non-all-anime con for a while, so I look forward to this~!

n'durrrrrrr *is confused*

I think my friends and I are going backwards on deciding where to stay. We went from, Which one of maybe two hotels to: "uncle's house is VACANT!"
"timeshare is cheaper than hotel" "omg! we might be able to use the condo just like last year after all!"

I am SO confused.

And I still don't know if I'll be there on friday evening or not.

But I still can't wait! Megacon 06 was my first con, and megacon 07 will be my fifth!

It'll be fun seeing some of the people I've met at Metro and AFO again! I'll be in a Petshop of Horrors group... I've never done a group thing before, so this should be interesting.

I bought fabric. It's prettyful. I'm afraid to cut it, but I MUST NOT FEAR THE FABRIC!!!

I miss working on a costume. I really do. I'm thinking about making a super detailed costume to make between costumes that will take years to finish just so I'll have something to do.

We were planning on entering the costume contest as a Sandman group, incase you wanna join us for that too. But then the site doesn't seem to have any information on the contest yet, so I have no idea what we'll be doing with that.

(All pre-registered people must be at pre-registration by 10:45AM Saturday because you'll be first to be pre-judged.)

There is a small break to relax or soak up some of the wonderful anime in rooms between prejudging and the show.

Stage presentation of costume is at 5:00 PM in rooms (room # coming soon) (Contestants be in back hall no later than 4:45 PM for line up). All contestants will be allowed on stage. There will be NO pre-eliminations.

Awards based on Technical Merit, Creativity, Accuracy, Originality, Quality, and other things like that. Not on how much you paid for your costume. We give no points for cosplaying during the actual contest. We recommend that if you don't have a good skit worked up, it's best if you just pose for pictures. Please don't do a bad skit.

DETAILED RULES: (you must read carefully)

1) Costume MUST be ANIME.... this means - Japanese animated series/movies (we will also allow J-Pop/rock, Manga and Video Game characters (Japanese based) - Sorry, no Klingons, American cartons, or Mickey Mouse.... Anime Sushi is an Anime Club and is here to promote ANIME!

2) Time limit on stage: ONE (1) minute (no exceptions-disqualifications to awards will occur if you go over) Contestants can just take eight ( 8 ) seconds or a full one (1) minute. To either cosplay or just pose for pictures. Just be sure to take at least 8 seconds and look forward so the photographers can get a good shot. Contestants cosplaying may take a few extra minutes to pose for pictures after the skit.

3) You don't have to do a cosplay skit. All judging will be done ahead of the contest in pre-judging. To cosplay or not???...it doesn't matter unless it's bad. (note: inside jokes during cosplay is just stupid for the rest of us ... and/or bad performances may result in loosing an award ... so please don't cosplay if it's not good. Just simply pose for pictures and smile for the camera. We recommend posing for at least 8 seconds)

4) Audio CDs only. No MP3s, must be in standard audio format. There will be no cueing for the music. CD starts when you enter the stage. Pre-set any pauses into your CD if it's that important. If it is a Commercial CD, the Track Number must be CLEARLY LABELED. If it is a Burned CD, your track must be the ONLY track on the CD. Cooperation is REQUIRED. Your music will start the moment you enter the stage. We will NOT wait for a "cue". We recommend you create a CD with your pauses included or don't make one at all. Also if you require only a minute of your track, PUT ONLY A MINUTE ON THERE. We will not be responsible for seeking to a point in the song, and starting it for you. There just isn't enough time and NO dress rehearsals.

5) One entry per person/costume. There will be NO moving from one group to another.

6) PLEASE NO COMMISSIONED COSTUMES. (No commissioned means you cannot pay someone to make you a costume. You can ask friends to help YOU make one, but please let us know at judging. There is a difference.)

7) Prejudging a must to qualify for an award. Prejudging begins at 11:00 AM in room (room # coming soon) (must be present to enter) Absolute cut off for entries at 11:15 am. At prejudging, you must be registered and given a numbered, you must be in full costume, AND you need to bring source images to show judges. If you register on-line, please come by before 10:45AM. You are first to be prejudged. You'll receive your number and turn in source material at 10:45. You will be first to be pre-judged and will have more time for the dealer's room. Don't be late or you will be moved to the end of prejudging!!

8.) Source Material. This is the most important part of Pre-judging. Source Material = an image to give or show the judges of your character as you made the costume to represent. This is the only way the judges will be able to give full credit to those contestants who spent a lot of time on detail. Make sure it's of the same version/variance that you based your costume construction on. Judges need source material. You're score depends on it!!

9) We prefer No weapons, but this year the convention center will allow them IF and ONLY IF you follow the rules. No exceptions. Rules include inspection, peace bonding and tagging weapon. This includes guns, swords, and any objects that may injure a person or property. Remember, while holding any prop with a point --be careful-- they can hurt people just walking by. Avoid bring anything dangerous. We want to be able to keep our new rules and allow weapons. ***I'm sure with the events of Sept. 11 security will be very strict *** (rules posted soon)

10) No messes. No silly string, no confetti, no water, NO MESS!! No fire, no cigarettes, or anything like that, no spray paint, no projectile vomiting, or snot rockets. That's just gross. If rule is broken, you will be banded from any future events with us.

11) NO Swinging of any props. (pieces might fly off into crowd). NO jumping off stage. When finished with your presentation, please walk off the steps. We will not be responsible for any injuries.

12) No obscene costumes (no nudity, no t-backs) or skits. This is a family show. Keep your performance Rated PG. There are children in the audience!

13) Kids judged separate. Kids, ages 0-13 will be on stage first and presented their awards before the adults. Kids in skits with Adults must decide if they wish to be judged as a kid or in a group. Please note so on the entry form. Children will all be on stage first at 5:00 pm. And awards will be presented before the adult presentations at 5:00 pm.

Be nice- we don't like unruly citizens. Please remain civil at all times: we reserve the right to disqualify any unruly, or disruptive cosplayer, and are not afraid to do so.

* Anime Sushi is NOT responsible for any injury in connection to the costume contest, or during it. Anime Sushi is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. There should definitely be a cosplay.com member meetup at Mega. For serious. At Amano's world, I think I recognized a dozen people from this site.

For some reason Metrocon seems to have alot of cosplay.com members. Was the same way in 2005. However, most likley due to the way its sprawled out and the lack of alot of smaller events and panels it's less likely to get together a group of people. With Metro there was the Cosplay.com panel/ meet in greet dealie and since the panel was over a hour or so it gave people time to get together without most of the group leaving out of boredom or the lure of a massive dealers room. I would wait until at least a month beforehand and then see how main people would really be interested in meeting up. Maybe find someone to take pictures and schedule a photoshoot or something.

Yeah, I'd love a cosplay.com meeting. I saw many of you at Metrocon and I was like "Oh, that person's on cosplay.com! =D" and I wanted to say hello to some of you, but I felt kinda shy and awkward about it. The only people I said hello to at metro from Cosplay.com were Hibiki, Dash and Chibi Kitsune.
It's like "Hmmm how do I go up to these people I don't even know, but then I kind of do. Stangers, but friends."
A panel/meet up definately solves that. Also, wearing a sign on your back that says "I'm____from cosplay.com" is fun. I did it at AFO and a few people came up to me and introduced themselves. ^_^

But then again there's also Mai Shiranui from King of Fighters....

Well, I'm hoping that I can go on the last day (Sunday), so if anyone is going on that day... keep an eye out for Captain Jack. And hey, if you're doing a Kingdom Hearts cosplay... I think you see where I'm goin with this. :)

It would be my first convention, meaning a first con cosplay so.. pretty exciting if I can go. :D

I must have completely missed the Barbarian Battle Pit, haha. Anyhoo, I decided to go on Saturday and will be wearing Tsubasa Chii. I wanted to originally wear her for the Rising Sun shoot then changed my mind due to the long train not being a good idea outdoors, and the costume is coming out really nicely so I would prefer to wear it for Mega.

Lol. Giant area in the dealer's room, foam weapons and insanity. But cosplaying often keeps people from wandering around much in the dealer's room.

Yay for Tsubasa costumes! I rarely see them at cons around here.

I saw your Tomoyo, was pretty shocked you didn't win anything Foos, I was very impressed by the headpiece. I'm amazed I don't see more Tsubasa cosplay locally, especially since it's so popular. That and Ouran cosplay.

Tia
12-01-2006, 08:27 AM
I think one of the reasons you may not see as much Ouran cosplay as you'd think you would is because it lacks challenge. It's basically off the rack, so it's not going to attract people who cosplay just for craftsmanship. That being said, it's a great anime to cosplay from if you're from the other side of the cosplay community who focuses more on looking and acting like a character and less on the costume itself. So I think Ouran cosplay just doesn't appeal to everyone.

Hime no Toki
12-01-2006, 12:18 PM
I've seen some really awesome cosplayers doing Ouran though, but locally, you just don't see it. And IMHO, even simple costumes take effort, and I'm always just as happy to see an accurately done costume that is simple in nature, as I am seeing an intricate costume.

I disagree with the notion that people are going towards craftmanship costumes and not 'closet cosplay' outfits. Its all in the person, and the mass majority of cosplayers are doing it completely for fun, thus craftmanship (or making the costume) is irrelevant.

As for Ouran being popular in Florida, well, its only really gotten popular at all within the last few months. By next year those blue blazers will be everywhere.

And as both a costumer and closet cosplayer, I'll say some of the hardest cosplays are those that require little to no sewing.

They are hella-cheap at Wal-mart.

Ouran is new. Cosplay trends seem to trickle from the western US and down. I've seen pics of AX cosplays that didn't hit FL until much later. We're always a year behind. But I give us credit, since I was one of three umehito nekozawa cosplayers at AFO.

Closet and casual cosplay will never die or lose prominence. Death note will tie it over for the next couple of years, for serious. ;)

Still working on the Bird of Paradise! The practice run was successful, so now I'm ready to tackle thre real thing with the nice fabric. I've begun purchasing other supplies and accessories a little at a time, so I don't have to worry about saving up for it in the end. I hope to get the sewing done before new year's so that I can focus on everything else between new years and megacon since it's more an accessory-heavy cosplay than a sewing cosplay... and this is really hard to type after sushi, beer, more sushi, more beer.... Kirin Ichiban is the nectar of the gods.. but anywho, yeah. Michaels' has been runnign a lot of coupons in the paper, and JoAnne';s fabric has meail coupons, so I'm getting a lot of good deals on supplies. The head piece will be my biggest challenge, I think.... and maybe the feathers. Gak... I'm not looking forward to the feathers....

I have decided during the last threee minutes of my lunch to try to compile a short list of why megacon is amazing

1. Everyone misbehaves and does crazy stuff and the convention floods out into macdonalds at all times, making miki dee's party central.
2. High pretty to ugly ration - Unlike in most cons, a lot on non ugly people attend megacon, they even make an effort to smell nice. <3
3. Super amazing expert elite cosplay - Crazy Strom Troopers, Subaru, people with amazing giant props. (Like my ABA <3) Yayayayayayay.

I hope my relatives give me money for x-mas because I'm gonna need it badly.
Still haven't gotten anything yet. The wig needs to be ordered so I can have it shipped in time, but with christmas being in a week my parents are like
">:-E! DO NOT BUY ANYTHING!!!!!!!" So everything is going to end up being done last minute. I wonder how my parents will react when I ask them to take me to lowes....I usually hate getting dragged to the hardware store...

h_p: We need to get everyone we know who is going to use a wig together and arm ourselves with gel, mousse and hairspray...*evil grin*

Must....say....hello...to...people....this...time. ..
I almost feel guilty because I never say hello to anyone, even though I mean to.

^_^ But gel doesn't work on wigs. Hairspray does though. I dunno about moose. I just need to cut and perhaps style my Vincent wig a bit, and then dye Dream's wig and that's it for me. My Yuna one doesn't have to be touched. Yay. X3 But with your wig you're really gonna need a bottle of wig detangler. Luckily I have some! =D And don't worry to much about working on your wig last minute. It's relatively easy to trim the wig you're getting. I got my Naruto one cut on the second morning of the con. But then my mom cuts hair so I made her do it. =\...

Caulk (clear drying) and hairspray are the best tools to use for wig styling. At least, from my own experiences. I wouldn't recommend most gels or mousse, though I have heard good things about one particular type of gel (Icy or Cool something or other...I forget).

Um and my bf an I are gonna be doing a couple's cosplay....I will look completely different all 3 days XD but I'll be sure to wear my cosplay.com member sign I made for AFO ^.^

The gel and mousse are for frizzieness. I used just a little on the tips of that freaky ass blonde wig that I no longer have to try and keep the ends together and it worked a little.

I'm not worried about getting everything done so much as being able to pay for the stuff...even if it's cheap. O.o
(pleeeeeeease relatives! Money for x-mas!)

I'm about to pull out my hair. I emailed the megacon people asking about their sci fi contest and they said "Wait a few weeks for updates."
It's been more than a "few" weeks. -_-
What the hell, do they plan on posting all this last minute or what!?
*Goes off to make pillows in all her rage.*

Hair wax works great on wigs, too, the kind used to style mohawks and junk. It kept a very thin antennae-like strip of hair sticking straight up for an Ed Elric wig I commissioned for a friend, and can be re-styled without damage or tangling. You can buy it for next to nothing at Wal-Mart.

I think im going to use some hair wax to slick back my Suzuka wig so it wont look weird with the ponytail. xD

hmmmm...The wig I want confuses me. The color swatch chart for that wig says you can get it in THE perfect color, then when you try to order it the color isn't there...That makes me assume the wig does NOT come in that color...if all else fails I'll get the next best color, but I'm still confused as hell...

I'm almost done with Yuna! =D
I put it on and showed my mom and she was like "D:< QUE!? QUIERES IR DESNUDA A HORA!?" (What!? You wanna go naked now!?)
Lol. XD I was just showing a little tummy. Then she starts yelling about how my dad would never let me go like that.
My dad comes out "It's ok, it's in style. o.o Just pull your skirt up a little bit, and it'll be fine."
My mom "D:< *Breathes fire*"

I need to go buy fabric too, lotsa black drapey fabric for Dream, and bring a friend who needs brown drapey fabric for Destiny. Hmm, we've also gotta go to the flea market to try to find a giant tome like book. (Anybody know where we could get one if we're outta luck?) Then I've gotta go buy two wigs at a local wig store, and then I must order a wig from Cosworx. My, I'm doing quite a bit of shopping this weekend. DX

I'll probably be going to Megacon cosplaying as Hulkling from Young Avengers or Yoshitsune (http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8345/alrightshutupuw7.gif) from Air Gear. I just gotta kind've find a not-girly floral pattern for Yoshitsune's pants and get to making them, like, now.
