I need some advice on how to make Juna's bow from Earth Maiden Arjuna. I wanted to make it myself because I figured it would be cheaper than having it custom made online. I've never made an accessory this big and I've never even attempted a weapon. At first I was thinking of having my brother make the basic form out of a light wood, but after some reflection I think wood might not work. I'm open to any suggestions!

I don't see why wood wouldn't work; you could use wood dowels for the main shape, or possibly plastic tubing that you could heat and bend (haven't tried it myself). Then you could build up the details using a sculptable medium such as Paperclay.

Hee, I thought about Arjuna cosplay myself but probly will never get around to it...

My friend Caleb made bows for our production of The Hobbit in January... um I'm not sure how he did it, but you can e-mail him at volando269@yahoo.com... you shold probably mention that AnneMarie (me) gave you his e-mail... I just know the bows were absolutely awesome and they actually worked =^..^=

I was the Elven Queen and he was a guard... oo we had fun w/ those bows...

About wood.. I was breifly conisdering making Kagome's bow (vety simple, that thing is..pretty much a red bend stick with a sting attached at both ends). What kind of wood and such would be appropriate (flexilbe, cheap, durable, etc) for this?

Who-hoo! Earth Maiden Arjuna! Isn't it called the Bvhaged Gita or something? I can't spell. Are you going for the transformed spirit costume or the post-resusitation school girl one?

I think Arjuna's vow is called Gandvia, or something to that extent. It's supposted to have it's origins in Hindu mythology. ^_^

I'm doing the school girl outfit, but I'd love to do her Avatar of time form. ....someday...*starry-eyed look*
I'm going to look into different types of wood right now. I'll get back to you when I learn more.

I had thought of doing the avatar form, but I'm not sure it would look good real-life...unless I could find some magical way of making it glow. Hot pink unitard....erg.

Okay, I found this site about bow making. It has a tutorial on bow making and a list of some wood types to go for.
The link is:

And the wood list is as follows:
Hard woods:
Apple
Ash
Chokecherry
Hickory
Ironwood
Locust
Maple
Mulberry
Oak
Osage Orange

Medium hard woods:
Birch (Canada, Alaska)
Juniper (Western parts)
Mesquite? (Southwest, Mexico)
Yew (West Coast)

Soft/brittle woods:
Spruce
Willow

Hope that helps! Good luck on your costumes everyone!
