I've seen a lot of these seemingly handmade UFO catcher dolls/plushies around at conventions. I must say that they do add quite the extra touch to many cotumes. Has anyone here ever made one? How'd you go about that?

I tried making one from scratch with my own pattern. *does Excel Saga impression* "EXPERIMENT . . . FAILED" . Of course, I only did the head twice cause I messed up the first time, and then got frustrated and gave up. :P It IS doable from scratch (though maybe not for me lol), but a number of the plushies I've seen at cons were probably done using a doll pattern. I got a rag doll type pattern, just last week, because I want to make plushies that look good, and I decided I wanted some large, posable (ie - floppy ^^) plushies instead of trying to emulate the standard UFO catcher ones. Artistic choice, really. ^^

Maybe someone else has better advice . . .

Make the limbs bigger and rounder than you normally would. ::has experience with too many deformed teddy-bears::

Hi,
I have only two plushies made so far...I am not that great...but I do know...by my first kinda failed experiment that you do need to stuff the plush with lots of batting and also...make sure the stitching is secure...also...if you are going to make someone or thing from a video-game or anime or even J-Rock...it helps a lot if you have several pictures for reference....(front,back,both sides...etc...). I have made Shadow from SA:2 and Gackt a J-pop singer....anyways...you can ask me a few more questions and hopefully those are questions...I can answer...without going to a higher authority...Hatsukoi...the master of plush making!

So you started from scratch? Did you use a pattern at all? Did you use felt for the clothes? Did you sew the clothes or did you glue them on? Can I see a picture?

Hi,
Ummm......I did make all my plush clothes from scratch....and no I didn't use a pattern...all original styling and planning....Oh yeah....I'm sorry I don't have anything to scan pictures of them with...I wish I could show you pics....but I can't right now! Gomenasai!!!! Anyways......if you have any other related plush-problems...you can either PM,AIM,or e-mail me! Bye!

P.S. I did use felt for the clothes...I sew the clothes on...but not to the body so they are removable! The eyes I use tackie glue and glue them on!

I've made a couple plushies (not very good, but.. ^_^) http://mandichan.easter.ne.jp/temp/plushies.htm

A good way to get an idea of a pattern is to buy a cheap plush and take it apart. If you want, you can even use that as your pattern! Just make sure to label the pieces so you won't get confused afterwards (like me ^_^)

For clothes, I'd recomend sewing em, but if they need some extra power to stay on, don't be afraid to use glue. (Also it can be good to use glue on the hair in some places too!)

I would make my first plush out of felt, cause its easy to mess up and have to try again, so wokring with something cheap is good ^-^

A very good site to check out for plushie making is www.ufocatcher.com They have a custom UFO link page as well as a forum with very helpful people. (But if you go through the older posts you may find most of your questions already answered~!) :D

Anyway, good luck on your project!! Who are you going to make?

I always wanted to make a Kunzite plushie to go with my Zoisite outfit... and now that someone gave me tips on how to do it (and made me excited about it) I found a real live cosplayer to be my Kunzite. LOL

I'm doing a baby-sized Tasuki in his TV costume. Baby proportions. I made his trenchcoat with major help from my mother, the rest I did alone by sewing together the body parts in double mode, meaning, two arms sewn together, one larger, to make the arm round. For the feet, I added a third oval piece before I closed the legs at the outends. The face I still didn't do^^;
For his shirt, I went to a baby shop and bought the smalles available baby thingie, you know, those with many buttons to button across and criss cross all over the baby and even a butt part to button... argh, you know whaddy mean^^;;;

He's cuuuuuute!!

I have photos of him, but on my old comp -__-
