Welcome to the Legend of Zelda cosplay thread!

Before I get into the tutorials, the totally AWESOME Michi wanted to make sure that everyone understood the site rules so that we won't run into any more issues as we did in the last thread. You can find the entire list of rules here (http://www.cosplay.com/rules/). So please, let's keep this thread clean and civil. Thanks!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last Zelda thread had well over 500 pages, which you can imagine is tough to perform a search. The biggest complaint, besides the off-topic situation, was searching for help and/or tutorials. The first few posts are made to help new and old cosplayers with their Legend of Zelda costumes. I spent the last few days looking through the old thread searching sited tutorials. There were written out tutorials (even a few made by me), but copy & pasting LONG posts onto another already extremely LONG post will only make it more difficult to update new tutorials because a post cannot exceed 10,000 characters.

The tutorials/tips are categorized to make the search easier. If there are any websites that offer tutorials on anything that could help a Zelda cosplayer, you can PM me and/or simply post it in this thread and I will gladly update one of the first few posts. If you yourself made a tutorial on a site and wish to post it on the tutorial/tips page, I will be more than happy to post it and give you credit.

Now before you read the list, I want everyone to know that cosplay is a fun hobby. It’s not serious business; it’s not the end of the world if someone doesn’t want to share their work. It’s a community of people who express their love for the character and have fun dressing up like them. As cosplayers, we need to respect our community and by doing so, we should respect people who want privacy. Alight, now that some of you are educated/re-educated, feel free to browse through the Tutorials/Tips guide and use any of these sites for any other cosplays you might have. Enjoy!

The tutorials are categorized for your convenience. There are also recommendations for certain level cosplayers (novice, intermediate, and advance). Note: The qualities of a costume differ between cosplayers and will not determine the level of a cosplayer. The levels are determined by experience to COSPLAY.

Novice- A person who is brand new to cosplay. Typically unfamiliar with most/all of the tools and/or techniques of cosplay. Novice cosplayers, however, can be skillful in other intermediate or advance techniques.

Intermediate- A person who is familiar to cosplay. Typically familiar with some/most of the tools and/or techniques of cosplay. Intermediate cosplayers, however, can be skillful in other advance techniques and/or learn from novice techniques.

Advance- A person who is knowledgeable to cosplay. Typically knowledgeable of most/all the tools and/or techniques of cosplay. Advance cosplayers, however, can still learn from novice or intermediate techniques.

Recommendations will be issued to the tutorials in abbreviations.
N- Novice
I- Intermediate
A- Advance

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FOAM TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://cosplay.rydain.org/index.php?itemid=4
http://amethyst-angel.com/armormaking.html
http://fiberglassblades.com/Process.html
http://www.jedielfqueen.com/elvenwarriors/materials/processes.htm
http://www.ops.dti.ne.jp/~darkk/
http://gaogaygar.fc2web.com/EnglishIndex.htm
http://entropyhouse.com/penwiper/costumes/helmsdeep.html

Recommended for novice, intermediate, and advance cosplayers. This is recommended for armor/prop making. Craft foam is the easiest and one of the most inexpensive ways to make what you desire. You can also choose other foams such as insulated foam, velora foam, etc. Note that final results depend on the cosplayer, but I assure you the results CAN be excellent.

FIBERGLASSING/RESIN CASTING/MOLDING TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://www.whatishcc.com/tutorials/polyesterresin.php
http://www.tapplastics.com/info/video.php#video25
http://ryuuraigeki.livejournal.com/361569.html

Not recommended for novice cosplayers. This is recommended for armor/prop making at an intermediate or advance level unless you’re a novice cosplayer already very familiar with this technique. It’s not nearly as easy as craft foam, it’s quite costly, and time consuming especially if you’re not familiar with fiberglass. However there are some VERY good tutorials on here. Fiberglassblades.com shows how to make the Master Sword.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BODY CASTING TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://www.studiocreations.com/howto/index.html

Not recommended for novice cosplayers. This is recommended for making mannequins to better form your costumes and full/partial body armor. A full body cast requires at least 3 people to perform. It is VERY involving, very time consuming, very costly, and EXTREMELY tiring for the model. Performing partial casts such as hands, arms, feet, and face are less time consuming and less costly compared to a full body cast (a full head is not recommended unless you’re advanced in this technique). But even still, this is not recommended for novice cosplayers unless they are already very familiar with this technique.

MASK MAKING/PROSTHETIC TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://www.studiocreations.com/howto/index.html
http://www.monstermakers.com/
http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Article/Ears.htm
http://www.scendan.com/lotrears.html
http://www.cosplaymanual.com/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=viewlink&link_id=24&Itemid=8

Not recommended for novice cosplayers. This is recommended for making masks, noses, ears, etc out of latex, rubber, resin, etc. These are less involving techniques, but depending on what materials you use, it can be VERY time consuming. Novice cosplayers can perform this technique if they are already familiar with it.

I/A

----------------------------------------

VACUUM FORMING/MOLD TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://www.studiocreations.com/howto/index.html

Not recommended for novice or intermediate cosplayers. This is recommended for making very high quality armor/props. However this is probably the most expensive technique to perform. It requires VERY expensive equipment and an already cast mold of specific design. The process is less time consuming if you have a mold and access to vacuum forming equipment. Novice and intermediate cosplayers can perform this technique if they have access and are already VERY familiar with the technique and equipment.

A

--------------------------------------

SCULPEY/CLAY TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://www.thenoodlebowl.com/jongleur/tut_fimo.html
http://www.sculpey.com/how-tos/techniques

Recommended for novice, intermediate, and advance cosplayers. Sculpey and Fimo are the most popular and considered the best of choices. I also recommend Activ-Clay, for those who don’t want to use heat to dry their clay.

N/I/A

--------------------------------------

FABRIC/PATTERN IDENTIFICATION/SEWING TIPS:

http://www.folkwear.com/patternindex.html
http://www.fabrics.net/
http://www.jksmithdesigns.com/tutorials.htm
http://www.jksmithdesigns.com/tips.htm
http://ryuuraigeki.livejournal.com/336911.html
http://ryuuraigeki.livejournal.com/358924.html
http://ryuuraigeki.livejournal.com/358357.html
http://medieval.webcon.net.au/index.html

Recommended for novice, intermediate, and advance cosplayers. Please know that fabric is a preferred choice. There is usually more than one type of fabric you can use and some cosplayers have a preference of fabric that may not be right for you. I recommend doing the homework on your character and yourself. Make the costume how YOU want it.

PAPER MACHE TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://www.jedielfqueen.com/elvenwarriors/materials/processes.htm
http://home.eol.ca/~props/papier.html
http://home.eol.ca/~props/recipes.html
http://www.jiajem.com/armor.html

Recommended for novice, intermediate, and advance cosplayers. This technique is probably considered the 2nd easiest and, depending on what materials you use, the MOST inexpensive technique to perform. Although, like foam the final results will vary on the cosplayer.

N/I/A

--------------------------------------

PATTERNS/TIPS FOR METAL:

http://www.armourarchive.org/patterns/

Not recommended for novice or intermediate cosplayers. In fact, metalworking isn't recommended for cosplay in general, as most conventions do not allow live steel. However, here is a nice selection of patterns for those who wish to make armor, accessories, or props out of metal (these patterns can also be used with other materials as well). Metal can also be very expensive and quite time consuming to work with. Novice and intermediate cosplayers can perform this if they are already very familiar with metal working/making and/or welding.

WIG/MAKEUP TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://www.tristencitrine.com/hints.html
http://godsavethequeenfashions.com/How_to_Straighten_a_Wig.html
http://www.youtube.com/user/MichellePhan

*Honey_Usagi-Chi gave a wonderful recommendation for a type of makeup remover. She recommends using Noxema make-up remover wipes available at Walmart, Target and other drugstores! Thanks HUC! ^_^

Recommended for novice, intermediate, and advance cosplayers. Wig and make-up are probably the most important feature of a cosplayer next to the costume and can make or break the look of the cosplay. There’s also tips on how to take care of your wig and costume, which is highly recommended for the very new cosplayer.

Best Make-Up: Ben Nye Theatrical Make-Up.
Best Make-Up Remover: Baby Wipes.

MASCOT COSTUME TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://sarcasm-hime.net/mascots.html
http://www.matrices.net/fursuiting.asp

Not recommended for novice cosplayers. This technique is recommended for cosplayers who wish to make abnormally sized costumes or to achieve an irregular look. Novice cosplayers may perform this technique if they’re familiar with it.

I/A

--------------------------------------

BOOT COVER TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://sarcasm-hime.net/bootcovers-tutorial.html
http://godsavethequeenfashions.com/Non-Stretch_Boot_Covers.html
http://godsavethequeenfashions.com/Inverted_V_Bootcover_Topper.html
http://godsavethequeenfashions.com/-V__Bootcover_Toppers.html
http://godsavethequeenfashions.com/Regular_Bootcover_Topper.html

http://www.limitbreakcosplay.com/FAQ_BootCovers.htm (http://web.archive.org/web/20070214120231/http://www.limitbreakcosplay.com/FAQ_BootCovers.htm)

Recommended for novice, intermediate, and advance cosplayers. This technique is recommended to make false boots while wearing regular footwear underneath. Fabrics/materials differ with other cosplayers, so use the materials you want. Boot covers can be time consuming depending on the shape of the boot and how you wish to construct it. It is also much less expensive to make and customize boot covers than to buy an actual pair of boots.

N/I/A

DYE/AGING COSTUME/PROP TUTORIALS/TIPS:

http://chinsoon.deviantart.com/art/Laura-s-Ayane-Cosplay-Guide-137291776
http://taeliac.deviantart.com/art/Fakie-Screen-Printing-Tutorial-55149185

Recommended for novice, intermediate, and advance cosplayers. This technique is recommended for those who wish weather or dye their costumes (NOT props). Dying material can be time consuming depending on the costume and its difficulty. Also note that most fabric dyes can ONLY absorb into natural fibers such as cotton, linen, etc; other/synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, etc most likely will not absorb the dye. So be sure to know what type of fabric you’re working with.

Here's a couple more for ear-making that I've found while looking for how to make some:
http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Article/Ears.htm

I'm planning on trying them out over New Years, and then I'll be able to comment more on them :)

New thread, yay! ^_^

Well, I was from the old thread, and now I'm in this new thread. Subscribed to this one as well. If you don't know me, well, I cosplayed a Dark Kid Link before, with a plush Kokiri sword and a cardboard Deku shield. I hope to cosplay another Link EVENTUALLY in the future. Probably a Red Link from Four Swords, because he happens to be my favorite. ^^

To all new Zelda cosplayers, welcome. If you need any help, go look at those tutorials, and if those don't help you, if you ask us, I'm sure everything will be fine. Just, don't ask me. XD I made all of my stuff out of plush.

This thread is very organized, and I'm sure it'll help future Zelda cosplayers lots! If I find any interesting tutorials to help us out, I'll be sure to let you know!

The huge list of ORGANIZED tutorials in this will most certainly help more than just Zelda cosplayers, I'm sure of it! I know that a chunk of these tutorials will help me as I work on other costumes-just looking over this list has helped me more than the general tutorial list in...huh...i can't even find the old tutorial list.

Great! Thanks Gowa-Chan ^_^ I added them to the 'Mask making/prosthetic tutorials/tips' section. :D
Glad to help :)
I should dig through my bookmarks (once my paper is done >.> ) and see if I can find any more tutorials I've found on my adventures through the internet.

Thanks so much for taking all this time to make such a great tool for not only Zelda cosplayers but all kinds of cosplayers. Heck I've already found a couple that I want to look at in more detail. I will definitly let you know when I finish my shield tutorial its the least I can do to contribute to the thread.

I think I had read somewhere that you were also building references but do you know if we can add in a post for links to art or references? Surely people can look around but just a thought. All right, I'm currently digging through the 'cosplay' folder on my bookmarks, and I've never been so glad for the folders in my bookmarks-I have too many favorites for my own good. Anywho, on with some links (no, not Link)!

a couple boot tutorials (not specifically for zelda costumes, but can be used for ideas):
http://www.strangelandcostumes.com/tips-boot.html
http://sithcamaro.com/boottut/index.htm

a general tutorial list (the one i mentioned earlier) that, although it is centric to specific anime items, there are some general tutorials:
http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=84955

how to add wefts to wigs (i searched for so long to find this one :) )
http://hemuloki-sama.livejournal.com/31997.html#cutid1

i think you might already have this one:
http://amethyst-angel.com/cosplay/tutorials.html

homemade dye recipe:
http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=57484

this is just helpful for makeup and such (VERY useful on finding suppliers as well):
http://fx.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

And that looks like all I have now. I used to have more links, but I lost a lot of my bookmarks when my computer went wonky awhile back (it was weird-all i lost was bookmarks)

Thank you as well on this. I was wondering, would a leather tutorial of how to shape, carve, etch, stamp, stich, dye, stain, cut, weather, glue, and rivet be helpful? I have a ton of time on my hands and I could gladly write on up.

P_Z, you rock..

This is the most comprehensive list for tutorials i've ever seen.... anywhere.

With something like this... I was thinking, perhaps it might actually be better to sticky this at the top of the page? Thus making it a permanent/ official catalog for useful cosplay methods? Then dedicated the remainder of the thread to new finds and tips.

I'm glad to see a new thread borne out of the last, but perhaps would it be even more practical to simply separate the two?
One, the (stickied) tutorial thread,
and then Two... a Zelda specific cosplay thread... first post having a link to the tutorial page.

I wish I had thought of this earlier, but the thought only came to mind as i realized this thread would continue to grow and become it's own new Zelda thread. Losing the Simplicity of having a dedicated, general-tutorial thread on its own.

Just throwing it out there... Sorry i'm kinda late putting my imput in P_Z.

Otherwise, excellent work. Cheers to new beginnings.. :)

I do agree that the first page seems to be very general cosplay tutorial-centric versus actual Zelda cosplay information. I'd be all for splitting the topic, since I intended for a new Zelda cosplay thread to stay on the topic of.. well, Zelda cosplay. ^_^; The tutorial list itself is very impressive and would be great to have say, in General Cosplay Help or something.

(P.S.) Here is my illustrator progress. Now including Master Sword progress.
Does anyone (off the top of their heads) know of any tutorials for making CAD compatible files?

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y87/Tsuyosa18/Link/Masterswordshield.jpg

So far the only thing that comes off the top of my head is to get the image how you want it, then insert it into AutoCAD at 1:1 and go from there. You should then be able to build a line drawing from the art, presuming going over the reference lines or if you've added anything to your Illustrator file.

If you have Photoshop, I'd imagine you should be able to save the image as a PDF in Illustrator, make it a jpeg (or whatever else you want) in PS, then plop that into CAD.

Not sure what version you're running but you can go from the dropdown, use 'Insert' and pick Raster Image, then select nearly any filetype possible.

Thanks T-R-L, can I call you that? T-R-L? :-p

I'm running on all the latest adobe software, using Mac OS X.

Thanks for the tip about auto-cad, i figured that since my lines are already vector format it might make it easier. They are also already at 1:1

PL,
haha, I will admit i used the shield collection pack a BIT for reference XD, mostly for the sword though. I like the way it looked. And yes, the positioning of my picture was inspired by the packaging XD. But mostly I'm just designing it to have the feel that I want for it. I believe there are probably some very small innaccuracies in there, but hey. Those are my own doing ;)

Hah! That's no problem man. Usually it's just Link, or TRL but really I've seen people throw around the name all kinds of different ways. It's cool.

Ah ok. Chances are that you may have to just see how they import into CAD. Though the vector design may help, depending on if you're connecting to a jig or CNC it may very well require some clean-up work depending on the software used. I used a very similar process for some of my designs actually and I only say this because even though the designs were very good, it still needed some correction to work with the cutting software. If instead you're just planning to plot off at an easy 1:1 to serve as a "pattern", then that's cool too! I guess that's up to you, but just letting you know the hindsights as it really depends on the application as to if you should be worried or not about the details. Heck, at the absolute worst it sounds like the benefit is a much cleaner design to build from and that's always good. Presuming one has the time, the benefit to this is that you hold the masters and thus can't blame for being too detailed for you can step down easily but it's another thing to step up! Assuming you've probably made that file ginormously huge and high-res, I see little reason as to why you (or someone else) couldn't plot it off with ease.

Sounds like you're on the right track!

By the way, this shield pack... I know I should know about it but is it that statuette pack that PL was talking about with TP or is it something else? *sighs* Something else I'm going to have to go find / buy / give blood for!

Hello, I am going to be starting a Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Link cosplay. Master sword and Hylian shield version. Although some thing puzzle me.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/animeotaku3322/propery.jpg?t=1165339103
The bracers on both of his arms look like wrought(sp?) iron to me, am I wrong?
For the Bracers I had planned to take 3/16'' foam, making it the right shape so as to wrap around my arms then either cover in a grayish vinyl or paint or the foam itself. Would this be a good idea? Also, the leather-like bracer on the left arm. I was told by Amethyst-Angel to make this from a much thinner foam, and given a simple tutorial. Seems easy. except would I go about making it form to my forearm in one area to not form to the next? All criticism is appreciated!

After looking at the art and playing the actual game I would definatly say that they are leather arm wraps made of a softer leather then one arm has a very hard leather bracer straped over that. The way me and my roommate made my leather bracer was I took cardboard and cut it into the rough shape I wanted bent it around my arm and kep cutting it and cutting it till it was the right size and shape. He then took cow leather and cut out two copies of the cardboard shape slightly larger than we needed to. I then got the leather wet, and bent it around my arm's shape and held it there till it was formed to that shape. We then got a pipe to lay it over all night for it to dry out. He then stabbed four holes in the bottom layer of the two leather layers (and only the bottom one). He then riveted on two straps to hold it to my arm that we had measured out beforehand. Then taking the top layer we slathered leather glue (esentially a version of rubber cemet we bought at the same store as the leather) on it and the bottom layer and stuck them together. I then held it that way pretty tightly for about 10 minutes till it was pretty well stuck togheter. I then drapped it back over the pipe and waited for it to dry. My roommate then etched the designs on the top with a leather etching tool. Then after that was all done we applied leather stain to it and then trimmed the edges and put edge coat over them to hide the seam of the two layers.

All right, I'm planning ordering materials/wig/makeup this weekend in order to get them at my house in time for my winter break to work on the ears, makeup tests, and styling the wig.
A picture of Vaati to refresh your memories:
http://www.kasuto.net/image/officialart/mc_vaati.jpg

For makeup, I am deciding between:
blue spirit
http://www.fxwarehouse.info/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=BENDC&Category_Code=BenNye
and blith spirit
http://www.fxwarehouse.info/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=860&Category_Code=RMG
I'm leaning a bit more towards blue spirit, but I'm still deciding, and I have to make sure I order powder as well.

And then for my wig, I'm planning on getting the enchantment wig in femme (light purple) and cutting it to form bangs and the like.
http://www.amphigory.com/wigs_enchantment.html

I was wondering what y'all think of my choices for these.

Princess_Zelda

Yeah, wearing theatrical makeup without the powder can be death to the costume! I like the makeup choices though. Femme I think is an excellent choice! Well done on finding it!

I'm looking forward to having powder, due to the troubles I've had with my Kyoshi makeup (first full face makeup, and it has been a learning experience)
I'm happy that they had that shade of purple for the enchantment wig, because I was originally planning on dying a white wig...which would have been incredibly time consuming and take another chunk of money from my pocket >.<
I want it to be the 23rd already so I can start work on some harder peices for this costume...and have an iron XD

I love the idea PZ, essentially your saying have each character Link Zelda Midna etc... and have tutorials that correspond with that character and also difficulty level? That sounds great to me.

As far as tutorial's go I actually started my Hylian Shield one today so I'll try to finish that up today or if not today very soon.

Question about Ben Nye Make up...
I want to buy some for my Midna cosplay since people have nothing but good things to say about it. A light gray and black for my face. ( maybe white too so I can blend and lighten the gray just a tad ) But I am not really sure what TYPE would be best to get... they have a MILLION things on this site @__@;
Like... Creme Foundations? Cake Foundations? Matte Foundations? etc etc.
Which would be best to get? x_x;

Forcebewitya: Awesome! I can't wait to see it! And thanks for your input about my idea ^_^

Breeface: I've had a LOT of experience with Ben Nye makeup. To answer your question, it really depends on what type of coverage you want and how long you intend to cosplay your character. I usually use the Creme Foundations, but sometimes I'll use cake fountations for characters that are completely lighter or darker than my natural skin color. So really, it just depends on you. But yeah, Gowa-chan is right, this kind of question should be asked over in the makeup threads just because there are people there who can really know what they're doing, not saying any of us don't ;)

Fran-Chan: Holy crap! I haven't seen you in like forever! Welcome back! Yeah there were these two REALLY REALLY good skull kid cosplayers at AX this year. And I know I got pics of them, but I haven't put them up in my gallery. :(

Welcome my friend, btw everyone this guy's dark link costume is going to pwn. Anyway yeah, as far as boss cosplay goes I dont know who would be an easier one to do. I think the hardest part is they're all so huge. Phantom Gannon, or an Armos (not quite a final boss) would be cool though.

Tomorrow i shall have my third attempt at a wii o_o, wish me luck.

Cosplay related: Ive finished the designs for my props... but i am still stumped on materials to make a cleanly sculpted and finished shield, that is accurate in the "3d". Mostly the problem is availability of materials in my area.

For instance, I had resolved to do it out of the pink foam method, but cannot find any of the foam in anything over 1/4 in. thick, or under 10x5 ft Are those expectations too high? Or should i just go ahead with the large sheet and just deal with the size/ price/ and amount of layering i'll have to do. Same goes for most wood i've seen. (not to mention the weight, and difficulty to work with)

Does anyone have any alternative advice on this? Perhaps even a more likely source for 2 in. thick pink-foam than Lowe's or Home Depot?

Home Depot should have 2 inch thick foam. The only reason that I can think of why maybe they dont is that its not as cold where you live? So 1/4 inch would be enough for insulating homes. As for finding a sheet smaller than 10x5 thats going to be a problem. I'd just get the full sheet you'll need foam eventually anyway thats the way I see it.

Here's what I'd do, I work at a hardware store similar to Home Depot (Menards...its a midwest thing though) and we do special orders. I'd go to Home Depot and ask at there building materials desk if they do special orders and then see if they can special order you a 2 inch thick sheet of insulation foam. But yeah finding it any smaller is a challenge a full sheet should be around 20 dollars. Hope that helped.

it's like that mostly, there are some venues that are more easy going but that can depend of whos is organising the cosplay setup. XP
basically and heavy wood, metal or plastic isn't allowed, also things like swords no matter how blunt they are must be checked by ops and usually they make you keep it sheathed..

sooo UK cons aren't so great for cosplay. :\

Thanks! ^_^ I'm not too sure about how to do the hilt yet, can't think of what to use ;__; I couldn't make the hilt from cardboard I know that god! I'd just die! o_O

Yeah, that doesn't leave you lots of options material wise. That is pretty sucky.

It's usually really nice here in Madison, Wisconsin. We have this one con that's relatively small (one of those that takes place in a hotel) and we had a Blade cosplayer one year. He had the real sword and he just whipped it out and everything for pics, lol. I'd have do double check with Forcebewitya on this one, but I don't think they have any real or fake formal weapon rules. (except real firearms) So that's kinda nice, I don't even have to think about restrictions there, lol.

Ooo, as for the Hilt I know Aaron Granofsky of fiberglassblades.com makes his out of sculpy or bondo (I don't remember which) but they look amazing. Since it does dry pretty hard, it would be really time consuming and meticulous if they didn't allow you to carry it in con. But if they did let you use it, maybe like really thick double layered cardboard and that would work. Just a thought. ^_^ -InkyLink

Would it be possible to be able to use a silicon mould with liquid plastic for any of Link's props? I saw it done on television and I can seriously see it being used for Child Link's sling shots or deku nuts or something like that. It comes out like hard rubber or something. What do you guys think of that idea? Possible? Or should I just stick to the foam board/core stuff?

Yeah well there are some very informal rules but knowing the guy who runs it he's pretty cool with allowing weapons. Actually most of the midwestern cons are. Acen for example was very lenient about weapons last year which is nice .

As for your hilt I'd suggest using a wooden dowel, its cheap, easy and I'm sure it would be ok since the blade's cardboard right? If not another option is PVC.

yes it does, I think it was because a while ago someone brought a replica sword to a con and they pierced the carpet, and as it was held at a hotel... it didn't go down very well, so now I think they're more careful... or rather too careful. XP

thats one of the reasons I want to attend a con in America! ^_^

How about plastic sheeting like the .020 polystyrene sheeting that AA uses? You can make some awsome props using that as a covering.

im going to make a ganondorf costume but i dont know where to start and I also dont have any good reference photos to help me out if anyone has any tips to help me out please pm me.

If you want any help with photos or anything let me know, ive got a ton from my ganondorf costume.

Another mini-2d update.

The sword is almost accurate.... just need to redo the pommel and then it'll be all set. A few minor things to do with the shield too.

Hey when you get done with that, id love to see a ai/eps of the master sword/shield. Would you be willing to share?

lol well not everyone played it yet actually, and not everyone made it to the ending. hehehe. I know whats going to happen since im almost done with the game.. but now im sure people are going to be wondering what costume your talking about hehe ^_~

but yeah...i say lets do spoiler warnings if we are going to mention TP costumes that are later in the game. ^^

Agreed if you are going to write a Spoiler do something like this:

Thanks for the welcome MasterSwordette and PikminLink.

Also, I need some advice from anyone who has done an OoT Link and has worn a wig. I want to have pretty floaty bangs and stuff, which I plan to figure out on my own, but does anyone know of a good base wig? -InkyLink

I'm still doing an OoT Link, I haven't waren a wig with my cosplay since 2004, my opinion is to use your own hair. I have use my own hair since May of this year for my Link cosplay. In short, you should try to use your own hair first before you use a wig.

Funny you should say that, I've been considering it. Normally it wouldn't work (being that I'm black *lol* and my hair is very curly and unco-operative) It really doesn't do anything cool except for get braided. I've been getting it braided for around 4 years or so and it's quite long. I think it would look cool for Dark Link, but also not very accurate. Unbraided my hair won't do anything. >_<'

If it looks ok and it's not totally different, I probably will use my hair. But if it's too inaccurate I won't. My costume's no where near finished either so it's tough to say right now. I guess my main concern is accuracy.

I guess let me know what you think about either option, since styling my own hair like Link's just won't work.

Congrats on the Wii!

I don't have one yet but I will have enough money soon to get a Wii! Yesterday, I almost went over to Forcebewitya's house and stole his, I felt like playing so badly!

I've never gone this long without playing a new Zelda game before and it's killing me! >_<

I'm the last person that should be giving out wig advice LOL check out my scary wig in my gallery <_<". On a serious note, does anybody have any suggestions so that I can work Link's gloves please? Also, if I wanted to make my tunic go with the princess zelda costume, should I make it 'shiny' or would shiny be bad for Link? I am only wondering because in Ocarina of Time money, 300.00 rupees would be quite a lot. What's everybody's opinion on that subject?

Anyone that HASN'T beaten the third dungeon (water dungeon) in Twilight Princess PLEASE do not read :<

**Spoiler Warning**

High-light to read!

I was soooo sad after Zant zapped Midna! ( Zant's one creepy dude, I wonder if they ever show his WHOLE face outside that weird helm on his head... ) Midna looked so pretty though when she was all faded out and white. I think I might do that variation of her if the normal one goes well. x]

hehe, well... I'd tell you what kind of wigs they are... but honestly I have no idea. I got them from a local store (kinda hole-in-the-wall, sorta place)...and none of my wigs have come with tags. I almost wonder if they're hiding something <_<.

H/o, i'll show you what the new wig looked like before i cut it. *looks for old picture*

[EDIT] Ok... lol... so when i was fitting my wig before i cut it... i was thinking about the possibility of doing a LOTR character in the future. But the style of the wig was just long and straight, without "bangs", split in the front/middle.

Yeah I was looking through a bunch of threads and the cosplaylab store came up a few times.
The only thing I am concerned about is the prescriptions law thing that was passed. That contacts can't be sold without a prescription. But I don't even wear glasses or anything, my vision is fine. I dunno what to do x__x;

You can get non-prescription colored contacts...or at least I did back in February. I don't know when that law was passed though...I know I couldn't get my prescription because I would have to go back to my doctor and get fitted for that particular brand and then order it and such...such an annoyence!!

Breeface, I think you can buy cheapy ones that they say last around a month for around $30-$35 here. www.sfxeyes.com

But you can also get $50 off of any pair of contacts for the holidays at www.9mmsfx.com (Once you enter the site, it will have news and stuff and the top one has a promotional code to enter at checkout) It's a really good deal if you must buy sclera. If you were thinking about getting a full eye yellow contact with a red iris, this would be the place to go and the time to buy because after Christmas I think it's over... :(

Anyway, those are the 2 good places I know of.

You should look back at the tutorials for craft foam since that seems like what everyone does for zelda armor.

Speaking of foam... I've got enough to make like 3 shields right now!! (which... I just might :-p)

Gonna start working on sculpting it tomorrow. as well as the master-sword.

I also got some materials today to make a "stage combat" friendly version of Links' "chainmail". (it's impractacle to roll around in chainmail on stage...) I hope it turns out well o_o. More details as these and other updates as they progress!

ooo neat. I want to make my own chainmail but I have a high quality really really pretty one picked out for cheaper than average. It's perfect, but it is the average 35 lbs. or something like that, so not good to run around in but for badass effect it's awesome! lol

Pikminlink takes commissions but I don't know how booked she is right now.
Otherwise Aaron Granofsky of www.fiberglassblades.com is selling one for $375 and one for $325. They're expensive but they're awesome.

Oh yeah I forgot that about PL. I just saw Hylian Shield and didn't think about how he wanted a TP Link either, oops. Basically my last post was a total failure. >_< lol.

Aaron doesn't often take commissions since he's finishing up school, but you could ask him if he has the time and he'll probably tell you a quote.

I don't think I am that good at making props either but I continue to do it and learn from my god-awful mistakes...and there are MANY of those. XD;
My Zidane Butterfly Sword prop was the first prop I ever made and believe me... there was ALOT of trial and error in the process of it. But once I got it it was awesome <3 I honestly think that making props yourself gives you a greater feeling of achievement. Even if it doesn't turn out the best the first time :] I mean... when you work hard on a costume and you FINALLY finish it and look at the finished product...doesnt it make you feel awwweesome? It's the same with props x]
But... that might just be me. :x

Now all the people who do commissions are gunna get mad at me for trying to encouraging everyone to try it themselves XDD;;

I agree, your own props are what can make your costume unique it's like all your own well thought ideas and hard work that put it all together to make some foam and cardboard/wood etc into a sword.
I am kind of happy with how my TP Props are coming along but next time I could do better because it's a learning experience I think as is all parts of cosplay not just props.

I agree completely. When you get something made it may look awesome but there isn't that sentimental value you have towards it. When you make it,however, it sometimes becomes your favorite part of the outfit. Also sometimes you can tell that a prop wasn't made from that person. If you make it yourself, it has your talents and abilities in it. it just goes better with the whole thing.

But of course if you don't have the talent, it's perfectly fine to commission a piece. I bear no ill feelings to those that do^_^

Little update...
Costume: The fake-mail is almost done! It's not really mail at all actually.... but it will do wonders in stage combat. ;-D Plus it's the right color!
The arm wraps have been re-done. They are accurate now :) (color/ material).
I've got a new pic of those in my gallery, and for once in a picture... i smiled!! XD
But, since i've been playing TP, I figured since Link has been smiling more in this game.... it'd be good to start smiling more for pictures :)

Sword: I'm doing it in wood for the time being. I have the shape ready to cut out whenever it turns light outside o_o.
Shield: Foam is all cut out to size, the layers need to be glued together, etc. etc. I also have masks, gloves, goggles, fiberglass cloth, resin, and hardener ready to go at a moments notice!! I hope I don't screw any of these up.

Of course, on the lines of what was said above...
... every mistake is a learning opportunity (still, i hope i don't make any!) :(

Wow, my first post in this thread. *nervous* XD

Tsuyosa - that stage-combat fakemail sounds cool. At Metrocon's scripted Human Chess Match, we're going to have a Link, though I don't know which version. If it's not one of my Ren-Fest buddies (who will have by now gotten very used to rolling about in chain-mail), they may be referring to you. ^__^

I am very soon tackling a Midna costume for my little cousin. It will technically be crossplay for him, but he was the one who suggested it and says he doesn't care. *laughs* He'll just be a flat(er) Midna. I may be making my other little cousin a costume of Princess Agitha. I love her dress.

I do have a question, though. I have a costume I want to make for myself from TP, but due to spoilerific context, I don't want to post it in the open or somesuch. Would it be horrid to start a thread here asking for help, with "Spoiler" in the title, or should I ask here with it written in the Spoiler tag ? It's just a call for reference pictures, but I know people have been chewed out for asking for them at other forums. It's not the biggest spoiler, but I did hate having it spoiled, myself.

I really hope I made sense just there.

And I do need to get back to work on my Navi costume. =D

I agree with everyone about making your own props. My master sword was the first complicated prop I'd ever worked on and although its far from perfect I've recieved a lot of compliments on it (and now that I'm revising it I'm sure it will look even better). Also when I had that Shield from ebay it was annoying because I knew that I didnt make it and that bothered me. But I dont have any thing against people who do commisions either. Well, time to write a 8 page essay :( once my winter break starts I'll definitly be on here more since I'll get a chance to work on my sword and other costumes.

1. Wait.... waht?? I dunno if they're referring to me or not. I havent auditioned yet... but I def. have high hopes for the part!!

2. I'm playing the game now... so i don't think many spoilers would be new spoilers for me.

Fran-Chan: That really stinks about the wii. Although I will admit I hid the nunchaku from my older brother. He was about to get farther in the game than me. (due to the fact he's capable of staying up ALL night and not worry about being at school/work the next day) -_-;; grrrr.

Hmm... Well, since I know I'm not starting the costume until at least for Mega, though probably later, I think it might be best to hold off on calling for these reference pictures so more people finish and know what I'm talking about. =D I can still start on AJ's Midna costume... I'm making a Wolf Link costume, well sorta. It's more like a life size puppet. lol

I used Julie Taymor's Lion King costumes as inspiration for how the puppet may work. I'm just not sure what to make it out of. I was originally going to make it out of foam, but I'm having trouble finding carving foam, I don't know where to look for it. I've already tried the craft/green homes, but they just have little dinky topiary sizes.
