View Full Version : What about Denver!?

First off, is Denver even popular enough for Summer-time, cosplay photo session event thinggy?

Alright, here's my situation, there are cool things going on in California, and now in Philly, but nothing for us "mid-landers". I mean, we have Nan Desu Kan in September/October, but that's so far off....

So, my question is, would there be anyone interested in a Denver area cosplay outting?

If it would help, I do work at the Denver Botanic Gardens, which would add a nice background for any photos. Or, if not, there are always parks, mountains, lakes, whatever (one of the benefits of Colorado).

So, I just wanted to toss the idea out there. Depending on what kind of feed back there is, I can set things into motion, that is of course if this interests anyone.

Well, if nothing else, have a good day, and thanks for taking the time to read the humble words of a poor college student.... :bouncer:

I would love to! Alas I will still be in Texas this summer, at school. -_-
I'll be moving back in August after graduation woohoo! I's sure there will be a time to get all the colorado peeps together.
There is a colorado cosplayers community om Live journal, you might want to ask there too. ^_^
I really want to do a shot in the snow this winter, it would be very cold but pretty. =D

Hmm, yes, actually, I'm farmiliar with Livejournal, though I've not been an active member in quite some time. Thank you, I'll see what I can find out through them, then if anything transpires, I'll post the event here.

But don't let this stop others from commenting. If anyone else would be interested, please let me know.

Thanks!

That would be so great! I really don't like only having NDK to go to around here...

Thanks! =^_^=

Um... I'll be in Denver next Thursday and late Sunday... for 15-20 mins and then I go bye bye :(

Hopefully not "bye bye" for good or anything....

And what for? There's a lot to do in Denver, certainly more than 15-20 minutes worth of stuff. ;)

And on the other, Yeay! A newbie like me (Ruby Gloom). I agree, we need more ani-things to do out here. So, I'll see what I can put together.

Let's hope enough people would want to join in some festivities with us.

On my way to Ontario (sp?), CA my transfer stop is to the Denver airport. I just got my plane ticket and according to it, I have an hour to hang around on Thursday and then gotta board my CA.

I'd love to go. *^^* I'd been thinking about organizing a similar sort of thing myself... Of course, it's always great if someone else does it. XD I'd certainly be happy to help, and I'll definately plan to attend! =D

I realized that I'm going to be home from around May 15-25, so if you wanted to plan for around that time I can come. ^_^ Plus usally the weather this really nice around that time. Would like a Saturday or Sunday afternoon be good? If we can finalize a time I well try and promote the heck out of it. ^_^
I know I can fit a costume in my suitcase. =D Lets do this!
The Japanese garden would be perfect. I wonder if we can bring food?

When NDK gets closer we should have a get together and work on stuff if it's possible. My friends over at Gimmie Anime mentioned it last year but I don't know that anything worked out. But they have a room that's perfect for it. ^_^

Right on, the wheels are in motion!

Actually, May could work (ha, May is probably the bussiest upcomming month for me. Added bonus, I'll be turning 23! Woohoo!)

Eh hem,

I wanted to ask you (Ringo) if you maybe knew anyone on the LJ cosplay community, or maybe even what the community was called. If they are already (somewhat) organized, then they might be a good foundation to build this whole thing on (or if nothing else, they should have connections to other people, as I would like a nice turnout).

As for the Denver Botanic Gardens (I just want to touch on this), yes food is allowed, and I'll see what I can do, but I know that even though I work there, I would need to rent out space if we wanted to, say hold something indoors (possibly outdoors as well). I'd get a 40% discount, but, I don't know, I'll see what I can do. Or, we can go a different route. I've never done anything like this before, so if anyone wants to help me with this (I'll spearhead it, but say, Beverly, if you know anything about where/how to start, that'd help tremendously).

Also something to keep in mind would be, "What to do"? Cosplay, of course, anime marathons (I know I have enough of that at my disposal, or at least friends that do), food maybe, I don't know. This will probably depend mostly on how many people show up (or are expected to do so), but right now we seem pretty small, but we can add things are time progresses. (As much as I'd love to create a brand new anime convention in Colorado, like I said, I know little about how to do so. And besides, starting small and testing the water, is always better than blindly jumping right in) So, any ideas?

Thanks to everyone that is so enthusiastic about this. If I can get a few things figured out, I should be able to get a date set here shortly.

Until then, if anyone wants to put the word out, I say go for it!

Thanks again!

Cool. I'll post something there in a few. ^_^ And see what kind of response there is.

I wouldn't worry about renting somethin out. Especially since we have to pay to get in. Keep it very informal. Maybe something like afternoon tea (snacks and stuff) instead of like a full meal. Have people meet at the Gardens and just hang and take pictures. ^_^ Then have people bring something to share.

Also something to keep in mind would be, "What to do"? Cosplay, of course, anime marathons (I know I have enough of that at my disposal, or at least friends that do), food maybe, I don't know. Keep it small and low key. Starting an Anime convention is a big deal, and not something to take lightly. I've been working with NDK for quite a few years and the crazyness that goes on when you planning an event like that is well, crazy. There are several other types of conventions in the Denver area where people cosplay (mile-hi con, starfest etc..) A while back there was a small con at the School of Mines in Golden. My best advice is to get involved in something that is already on going, like NDK or Mile-hi con then you can see what it's really like.
As far as showing anime goes since it's a public place you would need to get permission from the companies first.
You could always use the local anime club as a place to hang out and watch stuff. (http://www.denveranime.org/)
My advice leave it as a picnic/photoshoot a cosplay hangout. There are always oppurtunites to change stuff later. But that's me. ^_~

So how about the weekend of May 17 Sat. or Sun for a date, like around 2:00? That way anyone from out of town would have time to get into Denver. What do you think?

Ey, sounds lovely to me. I suggested a Botanic Gardensy thing to an old group of mine some time ago, I'd nearly forgotten about it. :D

Edit -- oh, incredibly dumb question, but seeing as how we'll be in a public spot, would this be the sort of event where we'd go traipsing off into the restrooms to switch for multiple costumes, or should we perhaps keep it simple with only one or two costumes each, as to not crowd out the visitors and burn ourselves out? Sorry if I'm saying anything anyone else has already touched upon, just curious...

Wooooooooo!!! YAY COLORADO!!!! I'm game. ^^ And I'm sure we have enough cameras between all of us, right? I'm a photograph fiend ::Laughs::

(I saw this on the CO cosplayers LJ thing! yaaay!!!) ^.^;;;

I guess you're right (Ringo), start small, and see how that works. I was actually thinking about helping with NDK just to see what it's like, so maybe I should get in contact with them here sometime soon. Who knows, maybe eventually I could get another con going, but that is a big commitment and would take a lot more than I perhaps have right now. Anyway, I digress....

As for the gardens (as I work there) I might be able to swing a few things. I let friends in all of the time for free, so if there were only a few of us, there'd be no problem as far as cost is concerned (though I would rather a good sized group, and if nothing else, I could get some really good prices). And too, if it was on a weekend (which I'm sure it will be anyway) I wouldn't have a boss there, and since we at guest services are pretty much the only ones there (on the weekends), I would "effectively" have free reign of the place.

Mwahahahahaha!

Eh hem,

So yeah, if you all think that the DBG will work, I'll take care of it. I "may" even be able to come up with a changing room, but like I said, I'l have to check a few things, and talk to some people.

As far as the weekend of the 17th and 18th go, well, you have a good choice in dates, as the 18th is my birthday. But that really doesn't matter too much (23 really isn't one of those important B-days), and as that is the middle weekend in May, I think it might work best (as not to be too early for E3 goers, or too late for A-Kon, which I may yet attend). And too, if anyone wants to go get a drink or three in celebration of an unknown persons birthday, I say the more the marrier (Ha! That would be fun!).

Again, I digress, I really need to work on that.

So, let's say on either the 17th or the 18th (does anyone have a preferance?) we meet at 2:00pm at the Denver Botanic Gardens (Located at 10th and York St. in Denver, I'll draw up a map later on) for an afternoon of coplay photos and lunch. Does that sound good to everyone? Tell you what, by the end of the week (possibly this weekend) I'll post the finalized announcement both on this and the LJ cosplay community (if someone would be so kind as to let me know the name of said community), will that work?

So, let's get the word out!

And a huge THANKS to everyone yet again for helping out!

Hmm, possible, as it is Colorado....

I've decided that tomorrow I'll go talk to a few people at work and see what answers I can get. While I'm there, I'll make a note of what should be blooming and when (we have a list of dates that say when it would be best for, say roses in Miyu's case. I guess mine too, I love roses!)

Anyway, yeah, I'll (hopefully) have more info tomorrow, so check back then.

Jem

(*Wince* I just realized that if this actually goes through, I'll have to make up my mind on what costume I want to make. Yes, I did say make, as I have nothing really at this time, well, nothing good. Eh, I'll worry about that later. I just wouldn't be me if I didn't procratinate on things like that. *hangs head in shame*)

Hey, also in Denver here - That weekend is the weekend of Anime Central, and I knew a few Denver cosplayers who are going. Is this date stuck in stone? I would *love* to do this Cosplay.com activity, but maybe I can't have the best of both worlds. But if I beg could it be put a week off or a week earlier? Pleeeeeeease?

Well, I don't know how solid that date is yet, probably not too much so, as it was decided yesterday. I'm planning on going and talking to a few people at work today, so I'll have a more solid idea of what to expect later on. And I *suppose* another weekend might work best for me too. The 12th or 13th might work then (as I don't want to get too close to A-Kon). Anyone else have any problme with a week earlier?

And on a side note, your (Dormouse) website's pretty cool! I really had no idea that goth and anime went so hand in hand (I mean, I've been guilty of both for a while now, but not at the same time, that's pretty neat). And actually, I believe I saw you this past year at NDK (sorry, I checked out your picture list). I was a half-assed Wolfwood, so you probably wouldn't have recognized me, it was litterally last minute, though this year I might use my full ass to do it right, we'll see. Anyway, yeah, check back later today and I might have more info.

OH my gosh, this would be fantastic. (The 13th of May is actually my birthday). I would even sweeten the deal for an earlier date than the 15th (cuz that's when ACen peeps leave) with brownies, cookies, and/or both. The weekend before that is the 10th/11th, and the only major con that weekend is in Vermont, so perhaps none of us are going to that one. *falls on knees and begs*

And thank you for visiting my site! I know I saw at least one wolfwood at NDK, the one who won with the Vash group, but I may have taken pics of others, but my film was stolen from the store where I had it developed. *sighs* But Yeah! Seeing a done-right wolfwood always rocks. XD What would you be wearing to the DBC get-together?

Well, here goes nothing.

Info for the Denver Botanic Gardens "Cosplay Picnic", this may change a few things....

First off, sorry, but this is going to be a long one.

I just got back from talking with the person in charge of facilities at the gardens, and here's what I found out.

As far a large group of people (I have no idea, but I even asked about 100 people showing up) they said that would be fine from the veiw of the gardens, though there would be other people visiting the gardens then, so as long as no ones blashful about being seen by the public (Ha! yeah right), that shouldn't be a problem.

Regarding cost to get into the gardens, well, that depends on how many people end up going. From 15 - 50 people, the prices would be Adults: $5.50, Students (bring I.D.'s just in case) and Children (15 and under): $3.00 . Now, if we did manage to bring in 50+ people, the prices would then change to Adults: $3.00, Students and Children: $1.00!. If not too many of us show up (like under 15), I can get us in free.

Now, that takes care of the basics. A few more things to keep in mind are places to dress for one. Bathrooms are available, however they are simple bathrooms, meaning small areas, which will have to shared with the public. Now, we can rent out a room if we like, but that'll take more money, and I don't know if that's a route we want to go. However, instead of the $500 or so that the gardens would be wanting to charge, in addition to a $150 set up fee, I was told that as an employee, I could simply pay the set up fee and thats it. Still, that's $150. Anyway, that's an option.

This is where it get's difficult, when to have it. I know that dates have been said, but here's what the gardens had to say.

Saturdays are BAD, Sundays are better, as there are less people. And too, the weekend of the 10th and 11th is our annual Plant and Book sale, which I'll be working, and if anyone wants to come help out (run away now), you're more than welcome to, however I assure you there is no way in hell we can o it then. As for the weekend of the 17th and 18th, well, that apparently starts our wedding season, which'll pose complications only really if we wanted to rent a room. If we simply wanted to keep to oursleves we'd have most of the gardens to use (excluding the area used for the wedding).

Where does that leave us? Well, if we want to do a weekend in May, that leaves the 4th, 18th (which has been requested against), or the 25th (which it sounds like also won't work, and I think I have a wedding to go to then). Also, forgive me for stating incorrect dates earlier, as the 12th and 13th are actually a Monday and Tuesday (I was looking at April ). However, I suppose we could shoot for a weekday, when everyone works, yeah, maybe not. So, guess that's all that I have, does anyone have a preferance?

Ringo, I know you want the 18th, and Dormouse, you asked for earlier. I'd love for everyone to come, so if there's something that I'm not seeing, please point out to me other options.

(I must be the worst person alive when it comes to lengthy posts. Sorry all)

Well, I guess I'll leave it there for now. We don't really "have" to do it in May, but, that's just a thought. Anyway, I'll shut up now and see what eveyone else has to say.

Thanks!

Jem

Tsubame_Gaeshi
04-02-2003, 05:49 PM
I know I said I'd shut up, but, *sigh*, I forgot to answer Dormouse.

First off, I'm glad the to hear of another May child, and I will have to say that brownies/cookies are very tempting, so I'll certainly do my best to help you out.

As for NDK, I don't believe that the Vash group that won had a Wolfwood, so that may have in fact been me. Though, that depends. Was that Wolfwood tall, this, without his cross punisher, and above all else both dashing and handsome, if not, that must have been someone else. ;)

For this little get together, I don't know what I'll be. I'll need to make a costume though, that's for sure. I'm trying to talk a frined of mine into being Rude, and then going as Reno, from Final Fantasy 7. Old school yes, but that sounds like something that's not done too regularly. Actually, I was thinking of taking pictures of myself and posting them somewhere on this site, and then ask people what they think I should be. I don't just want to dress the part, I want to look as close to the origional as possible. Tall and thin goes a long way, though my hair is sort of short right now, so hopefuly it'll grow out a bit by May. Ugh, I just don't know....

So yeah, I've rambled on enough for the time being, I hope this doesn't deter you or anyone else from asking me questions in the future (though, it probably will).

*Reaches for a stapler, proceeds to shut mouth for good*

Ok, this is what I can pull from it (also a long post):

April 6 - This sunday. How fast would everyone be willing to muster for this?

April 13 - A few weeks away, some time for preparation.

April 20 - Anime Boston, but no one has sounded out that they're going.

Late in April (the 25th - 27th) is StarFest - a major sci-fi convention. I'll likely see a bunch of you there. So that weekend would likely be bad for anything unless we said "screw sunday, let's go!"

May 4th is a free weekend - at least on the Con spectrum; though some of you may have events you are already attending.

May 11th is the Plant Sale.

May 18th is my bad weekend, but the only weekend for another cosplayer.

May 25th is Animazement, plus someone has a wedding.

May 30/Jun 1 is A-kon. Someone may be going, but we could discuss this date to see if it would work. I'm imagining someone is going.

June 8 - there are no cons this weekend, but we're getting further and further away from our date. I'm still game *any* time in the summer other than AX.

June 15 - Yuricon. I think I know someone from here is going.

June 22 - Fanime.

After this there seems to be a convention nearly every weekend during the summer.

On the other hand, the sun sets later and later, so we could feasibly have a cool evening shoot, though with the sun going down and colorado weather it can get breezy - but that could be arranged for later in the summer.

It seems to me that open weekends are:

April 6, April 13, April 20, May 4, June 8.

Gah, I hope I'm not butting in here by giving too much advice or information. Maybe we could have everyone who is interested write in which dates would work best, and then just go by process of "best date for most". That way it would work out in a pretty democratic manner.

Or, since I'm the only one who has a bad on the 18th, just do it then and we could organize another weekend later on.

Well...those are my thoughts!

Tsubame_Gaeshi
04-02-2003, 06:14 PM
*Pulls staples out*

I know, my credibility is already blown, feel free to kick me in person when we all meet.

Anyway....I just have to comment. I want to say first, that I admire the dilligence that you (Dormouse) have for this event. I'd be all for an earlier date, one of those spur of the moment things for sure, but would probably only consist of the few of us that are reading this thread. I will also say that if this outting doesn't work in May, I too would not be opposed to, say a June date, but as you mentioned, the weekends get full pretty quick in mid summer, and although I will personally atest to the gardens being absolutely wonderful on a summer evening, it probably wouldn't be the best time for lighting.

The 18th would work, but everyone better bring presents (I'm obviously kidding). We can do it then, but really, if there's ANY way that we can all work out a date where we can all atend, that would be my preference. The 18th may work, but let's get more feed back before setting it in stone.

*staples mouth shut again*

Jem - as for having short hair, I cut mine partly so I could actually wear wigs. Sometimes it's really beneficial to have it so you can just go about your business and not worry about braiding it on your head or anything.

As for the get together, you *should* plan for the 18th. I shouldn't stop you; I'll be at a con anyway! It's not like I won't be cosplaying, and that way Ringo can do it too. ^.^ Let's just hold another one later in the summer. *big round eyes*

Ahem... remind me to read -all- the posts before I go shooting off... anyway... Ringo-chan mentioned this on co_cosplayers, which is where I found it. :)

I have a preferance to June 8th weekend. No cons, plenty of time for people to prepare and no rushing which can tend to stress people out (or at least me. *bows head*)

I'll also be willing to help in anyway that I can. Not sure how I could as of yet, but let me know what you need and I will certainly try. If we wanted to get together money for renting a room... *ponders* ... well... we could do like a little cosplayer fundraiser thing. We do little fundraisers for another organization I'm with all the time. I could get some good ideas from them for such an event.

I may also be able to get ahold of a camcorder and record a few cosplayer interviews if it interests anyone else out there? Maybe put them up on a website somewhere for easy access?

Tsubame_Gaeshi
04-03-2003, 12:53 PM
Alright, shall we say the 18th? I'm warning you now, as my actual time of birth is 12:33am on the 18th, by the time this picnic gets around, I'll probably be hung over (or worse ;) ), not that it'll matter much, but it's just a warning.

We won't be able to rent a room, as I'm sure they will be used for a wedding or something, but I can double check. So, if that's alright, bathrooms may be our only option.

So, if that works for everyone, May 18th, Denver Botanic Gardens, 2:00pm, cosplay picnic, sound good?

And let it be known that as I can't withstand the power of big round eyes, we will at some point hold another get together later on in the summer, for those that can't (or can) make it.

One another tangent (and at the risk of looking foolish), um, Starcon, when is it and is it any good? I've heard of it, I know it's a big scifi convention, but how broad a spectrum does it have (that is, is it all scifi stuff, or are there any cross overs, like into anime?) Alright, anyway, it sounds like it might be fun, so if someone would be kind enough to give me some info (or hell, I could probably find it online somewhere), I may see a few of you there (from the sound of things).

Alright, well, if nothing else, see you all in May!

*If the specified date works for everyone, please respond in the afirmative. When I get word that it will work for everyone else (sorry Dormouse, but we'll catch you next time), I'll post another thread letting everyone else that hasn't read this thread about our little event. Ringo, f you wouldn't mind terribly, would you be so kind as to post the info on LJ to the co_cosplayers community? As it get's closer to the date (or, even know if you all know what you're going to be cosplaying), I say we post what we are each going to be, so we can get like costumes together for serise group shots, or just so we know what everyone'll be, sound good? Speaking of which, I have to get cracking on that.*

Thanks again to everyone for being so enthusiastic about getting this event together, I'm looking forward to it already (one of the down sides to preperation of a thing is the anticipation and waiting, *sigh*).

Well, I look forward to a different date! XD But yous guyses better have lots of fun and take *good* pictures without me! *cries*

But, I have the skinny on Starcon, which is actually a con known as StarFest at this point. It used to be bi-yearly, but now it's only in April. It tends to be a very tv/movie sci-fi oriented convention, with emphasis on Trek, Star Wars, and your current movies that are out. Harry Potter has a growing popularity too, and I know that this year there will be a sorting ceremony and such.

There *is* an anime room, and I dressed as an anime character in the past (rikku, ffx; selphie, ffviii), so it's not unheard of, but you better get ready to see Klingons tromping around the convention. If you're not ready for a weekend of that, dealer's night is Friday from 6-9 or something, and Saturday is the big signing/guest day. If you're coming for one day, do Saturday. This year Lex from Smallville will be there. Dunno if you care, but mmmm.

The website to check this all out at is http://www.starland.com

Klingons don't bother me, I'm 6'3" so I'm sure I'll tower above a few of them (even if they are a militant race. Oops, wait, uh, that is, I wouldn't know, I've never watched Star Trek, or Star Wars, or anything *sigh*, alright, so I have my nerdy moments too).

Anyway, yeah, Saturday sounds good. I don't know if I'll "dress the part", though if I can find (and taylor) a black suit of my Wolfwood costume, I can just wear that (i.e. Men in Black. Or is that just dumb. Eh, I like suits, so screw it, even if it looks tacky. Maybe I'll add a bit of make-up, just because).

That's cool that Lex is going to be there, though too bad Lana Lang isn't showing up too, 'cause, uh, yeah....

Eh hem, anyway, I think that was it. So if you'll be at StarFest, I guess look for a tall thin guy either in a black suit, or looking rather out of place.

Thanks for the info!

I would love to see Micheal Rosembaum! They always seem to get the hunkyest guests. I mean last year they had Christian Bale *swoon*. Maybe i'll get to go one of these days. XD

I'll pass the info along to LJ.
See you then ^_^

Sounds wonderful! =D I'll be sure to be there with a few friends? Are you going to need a "guest list?" XD

Also, is there anyway we could get maybe a little tent for changing? I thought it might be something we could get that they might already use for weddings and such, I'm sure you know more about that... ^^

It is weird how few cosplayers there are at NDK. Especially since it's been around for a while now. What's up with that?
Although I don't really cosplay at NDK cause I work, but other people should! I probably will this year, but not the kind of costumes I usually do.

Mikigami- why 2 1/2 years? Are you in school or coming to school? Sorry i'm being so nosey XD.

Beverly- Unfortunately I was told that a tent wouldn't work (and really, aside from the slated Amphitheater, there'd be no where to set one up), and although the weddings are usually held outside, the receptions are indoors. We do have two bathrooms inside (the one upstairs is larger) and one outside (though it's a one at a time thing).

I double checked the availability of a room to rent, and they are all taken that day. I think that if we all share the bathrooms and perhaps tolerate small changing rooms, we should be fine (I do apologize, as I have no better solution....)

As far as a guest list, really all I can think of that we'd really need is a head count, to see if we'll qualify for the bulk rate (50+). Other than that, names don't matter, though I do encourage everyone who's going to post (in the NEW thread I'll be posting here shortly) what they will be bringing in the way of costumes, so that should anyone wish to get like characters (or an entire cast) together, they can do so.

Sorry again for the limited space (Does anyone have a van? We could use that as a changing room. Just an idea....).

Hey,
I've been looking for denver cosplayers for months now. I would more than likely be down for a photo shoot. I completley suck at cosplay but ain't too shabby at props. Drop me a line when you get a chance, I have craploads of digital equipment.

Well, currently with school and all (and in the after math of NDK and Halloween) we've not set a time/place for our next event, but as soon as we do I will let you know. We also have a yahoo list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/denver-cosplay/) that gathers our community and reports on event ideas, as well as lists dates for our upcoming get togethers.

I'm not sure if we will be able to put together an outing for this month, but the next one will be soon if nothing else. Thank you for you interest in the DCS, and I hope to see you at our next event!
