Hey all! I'm going to be making a costume of a character by an artist on DeviantArt (Wen-M) and I was wondering if, in general, there are any tips on its construction and such.

http://ic1.deviantart.com/fs6/i/2005/114/3/6/Balberith_by_Wen_M.jpg

My budget isn't the best, but I'd like to make it look as accurate as possible. I've already spoken with Wen and gotten front and back views, although those are on my laptop and unavailable for the time being.... I will be crossplaying it- seeing as I'm a girl- and Wen's already modified him to have a chest piece so I can actually do it. But, are there any tips from all of you that have more experience than I?

Thanks!

Ah yes- finally got it uploaded. The different views of Balberith, and some details:

Unfortunately, it's not as big as it is on my computer, but I hope this is enough.

So by "modifying the chest piece" does that mean your covered there or not? Since it's a bare chested cosplay, I'd suggest a body suit to help. You can purchase many varieties of full suits (with hands and feet and hoods) at dance supply stores. There's some thread on bare-chested crossplay as well as binding tips in the crossplay forums here. Hope this helps a bit, and good luck! Looks like an amazing costume.

Cardboard is a life saver! I suggest you use cardboard ( massive amount) or the more expensive route which would be foam. Fun foam (thin), or apolstery foam (thick couch or seat coushon foam).
I'm makinf an Akuma our of apolstery foam but I have time so I have no issue with money for now.
Cardboard is always cheap but a little more difficult to cut and bend (not very flexible)

that is cool that you are doing one of Wen-M's character. I know him on deviantart.

I'll probably be covered there, I'm waiting on the mod sketch. XD If worst comes to absolutely disastrous, I'll tweak the costume myself so that I can bind properly and look believable. Thanks! <3

I actually used cardboard in the patterning; I have to redo it though, because at the time I was making it to fit a guys' arm and I've lost touch with my best candidate. XD I was thinking foam for stuff like the horn, or maybe PVC piping on the wings, to act as a base for both, and then going over with Wonderflex. :/ I suppose it depends on how much I get paid for my commissions. Oh, and thanks for helping too! <3

UPDATE: I've been patterning all weekend, and I've gotten the leg done. Here are some of the angles (all I could get before the camera died, anyways) that I captured. I couldn't stand, unfortunately; since it's cardboard, it's not quite sturdy enough...

Another inner view, but better this time. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v355/Sekhimet/DSCF0042.jpg)

Yeah, those are my pajama pants. XD

What do you guys think?

That's looking pretty good! What kind of cardboard are you using so you don't get nasty corners?

I didn't know there were different types.... I'm just grabbing whatever I can lay my grubby paws on. ^_^; some of the corners are quite spikey, but once I get this dne in WonderFlex I'll be rounding off the corners a bit so it's not so painful. And in all honesty, the crners as they are, even being spikey, aren't that bad at all!

XD I knw him. I met him at AX last year and asked him afterwards; he's really cool, and he helps out with the cosplay by sending sketches and suggestions. ^_^
