All I have to say is...
Wow.
I have never in all of my life seen a better masquerade. Everyone had such great skits, and beautiful costumes!!! I hoesntly don't think that there was a skit that I didn't like, which is a first. So the dance-off theme did get a little repetative, but not to the point where it bothered me. A lot of it was actually well done. And I still cannot get over how gorgeous some of the costumes were!
I LOVED the skit that won the WCS contest; your costumes were out of this world! Not to mention that making the lights turn to red in the bird, making it ANGRY BIRD, definately gives you extra points, xD. Pretty much every single Clamp group was amazing. I also personally liked the Soul Calibur and Rozen Maiden costumes.
The Code Geass skit was definately one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time, and Team Osaka's skit was epic. I also thought the KH skit was really witty, and the Ah My Goddess one was done really well. The Death Note skit was cute too.
And how could I forget the Shuichi/Gurren Lagen skit! Shuichi, you told me your skit wasn't funny. You trickster.
I also want to think the MC, even though I totally forgot his name. You get my vote for Best MC that I've ever seen :3.
Overall, this was definately the best and most enjoyable Masquerade that I have ever been to. I want to thank the staff and judges for all of their hard work, and all the participants for doing such great jobs! Everyone was so sweet and there was NO COSPLAY DRAMA!!! Thanks for such a wonderful Masquerade everyone! Hope to see you next year! <3

The MC was Uncle Yo. He does standup at a bunch of cons, and he's really awesome.
I agree that the skits and costumes were out of this world. My only complaint was the giant pillars in the room. My friends and I had to sit in the back just so we would have a view of the stage, because they tried to seat us in front of one.

Lol the MC had noticed that they would be in the way and asked any of us if we had the ability to destroy giant cement pillars. I was tempted to say yes.

Uncle Yo did a GREAT JOB hosting the Masquerade and I have to agree that it was just an AMAZING masquerade. My personal fave had to be the Oh! My Goddess one. It was such a unique idea and beautiful at the same time. <333 It looked like they were actually flying to me. >w<

I agree, it was a very good masquerade, and I normally do not go to them. I really loved the Kingdom Hearts skit, the Bleach one...and the two ending Geass ones. (of course I'm impartial to one of the skits I mentioned as I'm a Geass fan . =D)

A WCS performance judge here. Have to say, I'm beyond impressed with how well the masquerade went @ NYAF this year. It seems everyone involved brought their A game, and it definetly showed. Props to my fellow judges and the winners, and I'm hoping to see this kinda of quality come next year. Uncle Yo does not get props from me this year, as he did not invite me drinking post-masquerade with him.

In all honesty - Uncle Yo did a HORRIFIC JOB.
Never in my life have I ever competed in a competition where the Emcee felt the need to interact with the skits. I would've been fine with his banter, and with the time stalling. But he got involved with most of the skits. Most noticeable was the Death Note one, and then the Bleach one. But he also picked props off the floor in the middle of my skit with my partner.
It was rude, hands down rude. People worked very very hard, and he interfered because he felt it was necessary to do so. Only one skit requested that he participated with them, but he was in the way for the rest of them.
I know as audience members you don't see it as a big deal - but put it this way, if it were you on stage, and someone that wasn't in your skit decided to go behind your costumes, move props, or just be rude towards the work that you were trying to do, how exactly would you feel?

Personally, there's a few things that I had issues with as far as "Uncle Yo" was concerned. Moving props off the stage when I purposefully tossed them in a direction where I knew where to find it was a major issue. It's great if you want to help clean off the stage. Do it AFTER the skit is over. I was nervous enough as it was already without having to suddenly do improv because he took two of my props.
Secondly, his complete dismissal of professionalism as well as trying to remain neutral to all participants.... Where was it? I'm friends with a lot of the participants that were competing and by no means am I trying to downgrade any of them, but who the hell is he to say where the "bar" of each performance was. It's one thing to say that, "Everyone's performance was at this stage. Team Osaka came in, and BOOM, They raised the bar." I'm perfectly fine with that. But to single out a specific competing group and say they were higher than expectation? That's basically saying that everyone, including the team that won the WCS competition were all SUBPAR. That's inexcusable. His opinion is moot in the event, at most. His honestly should HAVE NO OPINION. He's suppose to be a neutral party.
And just so it doesn't seem like I'm only trying to rail "Uncle Yo" or anything, another major petpeeve I had with the Masquerade was horrible job the Tech Crew was doing. They over amplified some people's audio, including Team Osaka's. They abruptly cut other groups audio track, such as mine and my partner's when we left them specific directions to fade out the audio. And the ability to control the lights were awful as well. They had all the controls and equipment to do such, yet they lacked any form of common sense or general capabilities to actually do it properly.
And I don't know if anyone else noticed it, but during mini-concert that Rie Tanaka was performing, she was about to start speaking again after her second song, but they jumped her right into the 3rd song without even a moment to allow her to either catch her breath or speak.
There's a vast space of improvement for this entire Masquerade, and I hope that amount of money invested into this convention, they look into making this part of the convention better.

I'm with you, i didn't do a skit but god was he annoying, like he felt like he always needed to be in the spot light and his jokes were so long and......not funny.I would suggest getting a new Emcee next year.

I would not say that Uncle Yoh did a absolutely horrific job, as I was very amused for the most part but I did question his involvement with some of the skits. I thought that it was funny when he added the speech bubbles to the Death Note skit, but actually moving the props of the cosplayers was a little uncalled for. Especially as the specific prop might still be in use even if it's to the side. I feel sorry for the participants that had their items disturbed during their performances. :/
I was also a little surprised by the 'oopsies' on the Tech Crew part. Don't they do sound checks beforehand to measure how the audio tracks sound? Was something lost in translation? More than once I found myself looking towards the back wondering what was up.
Overall, I REALLY, REALLY enjoyed the masquerade. Congrats to both Dia and Fatwetdog for their WCS win, and for Mario and Jin on their Best in Show. Some of my other favorite skits included the Anti-Sora/Shadow Roxas one (I wanted to meet the cosplayers so badly! Their skit had me rolling!), The Beatmania skit (upbeat, light up records, and entertaining) and The Ah! My Goddess one (beautiful and adorable!). Also, I was very impressed by the dialogue/idea of the Death Note skit because the girls who performed looked no older than 12.
Congrats to the winners, good luck/break a leg to the WCS winners and good job everyone!

See, I didn't know that Uncle Yo was moving props, it didn't really appear that way, and props to the people who played it off very well.
As for the Death Note skit, he made it funnier, because that skit was based off a deviantART comic, and by adding the little speech bubbles made it adorable and cute. I LOVED THE OSAKA TEAM. I have never seen such commitment to a skit ever. I had already been crying because my friend had gotten proposed to, but the intensity of their skit was just amazing.
As for the winning team, I loved it so much. I'm glad they really incorportated bits of XxXholic into the skit. Tampopo was such an amazing touch, as well as the lights on the dress.
Like stated in the first post, this has been the best masquerade I have ever been to. There was maybe 1 skit that I didn't like. The rest were either funny or beautiful.
Congrats to all of you, because this is what masquerades are all about.

As one of the cosplayers from the Kingdom Hearts skit, thanks very much. :) We beelined it out of the auditorium because we were so tired, but I wish we would have been able to walk around more!
Thanks for the kind words, though. I do agree that the MC participating in the skits was unprofessional. I know he was only trying to help most times, but it only ended up upstaging the participants and it was their time to shine, not his. I know if he would have done that in our skit I would have been very, very upset, so I can only imagine how the others feel.

I really enjoyed this masq. For me to say that is a big deal, as I usually come out of most masqs liking maybe a quarter of the skits. This one was 3 quarters, if not higher.
I can totally understand people's issues, but as an audience member, I loved Uncle Yo. He had me in stitches, and was a part of why I loved this masq so much. I personally did not notice his involvement as an interference, and I think most people around me felt the same. Again, I understand the performers feeling like he needed to back the eff off, but just know that the audience didn't really notice!
My two favs were Beatmania and Geass. I don't even know that game/barely seen that series, and I loved the skits. The Sakuras at the beginning were so cute, and I loved the Ah My Goddess skit...The Sora skit...you guys rocked. Seriously though, I just can't name them all...major kudos to everyone who went up there.

TEAM OSAKA. They basically made the convention for me. Did you manage to catch their impromptu performance on Friday? They danced and sang and, Oh God I LOVE them. They are also so incredibly sweet and nice. They really are my OTP. XD;

Thats awesome to hear you liked their performance, they are really true hearted and I am sure they had a blast in New York. They were SO excited about going. They have a radio show in Osaka so I think they will have a lot of great things about their time. They also have a web page here. (http://yuimino.com/index.html)
Across the top of the page is "Introductions", "Blog", "Planned Events" and the 4th is "Images and Video".
In "Images and Video" you can see 4 links that say "GO" as you scroll down. They will lead you to pictures, perikura and videos of their performances. Lots of really good pictures!

Re: Uncle Yo
So I did some research today and....
1) The Death Note kids requested Yo's assistance in their skit.
2) Rewatched the BLEACH skit, and it appeared that Yo was trying to help re-attach said wing to said cosplayer. She came real close to stepping on it twice, and I'm sure she didn't want that to happen. Wouldn't call that interference.
3) Tsubasa skit- I can see where AAB is upset and I don't blame her, but I think Yo grabbing the props from the floor was more of an attempt to help, than it was to interfer. Doesn't mean he was right, but his intentions were good.
Re: Team Osaka.
It seems everyone who had a good time @ NYAF also has a happy little Team Osaka story. I have 2. My fiancee trying to talk to them in Japanese (which was hilarious as she knows little to none) and the 2 of them fangirling over my friend Greg in his Cloud costume and demanding pictures. Cute girls, hope to see them back next year.

Hello everyone. As some of you may not know, I was the Maito Gai who proposed to his real life girlfriend on stage. We didn't want to step on any toes which is why the NYAF Crew accomodated us and made our skit last. Overall, I thought the performances were pretty good. A big step up. Some of my favorites were the Shadow Roxas and Sora and the Code Geass before my own.
I just want to give NYAF a big thanks for being so helpful to me and helping make my proposal everything I had ever wanted. They really went out of their way to help out with this. All the staff was cooperative.

Hey, are you the Gai that won our Squad 11 quiz show back at Anime Next 07? (I was the Yachiru!) Either way, your proposal made me go aaaawwww! My fiance proposed to me at a con, too, so I'm a total SUCKER for that kind of thing! MEGA congratulations and we wish you lots of luck.
A question for you - Was everyone else in your skit in on it? LOL, we were just a little disappointed we didn't get to see the actual skit XD! My fiance and I love Marvel and we would have totally LOL'd.

Yes I was that same Gai and I still have that book you all signed. ;) Thank you so much! It was tricky getting in our parents without blowing the cover, especially my own, who had flown in from Puerto Rico secretly that morning!
And yes, everyone else in the skit was in on it. Haha. We were all laughing about the fact that we should have just cancelled on the proposal and just gone through with the "mock skit." We might actually do it now since everyone seemed to like the idea.

Aaaww! We look back fondly on that quiz show XD! Glad you still remember it.
And man your friends did a good job. The Wolverine is a friend of mine, and he was telling me a bit about the skit and how nervous he was. We were seriously excited and expecting it to happen XD! It might be funny to do some time, especially at a comicon. But the proposal was great, and it's impressive sneaking your parents in! I so felt your fiancee's "OH MY GOD THEY'VE NEVER SEEN ME IN COSTUME!" (Mine have lots of times, and when I ran home after he proposed still in Nami from One Piece, my mom was STILL "What are you wearing?!")

Question: does NYAF pre-screen skits for WCS, or do people simply bring their best game because the grand prize IS WCS? Just curious...
Also, my humble opinion is that an emcee should never interact with a skit unless it is asked for by the participants. The show is about the participants, not the Emcee, and they should not steal the spotlight. If the skit members specifically ASK for interaction, then it's all good. Thx for clearing that up, SW.
Aqua's Rhapsody
09-30-2008, 08:54 PM
Entering the WCS is an optional part of the NYAF Masquerade. You don't have to do it, but you can, and I believe most of the groups that went entered it. There were 30 groups and apparently 75% of them entered the WCS part as well, but it looks like there ended up being only 18 groups, unless all the skits aren't up yet on ACParadise. I feel like most of the groups that did go did enter it. You do have to follow certain guidelines to be eligible for the WCS though.

Yeah, I think all of 2 ppl running the masquerade knew about it and kept their mouths shut. Good stuff man, I severely DAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWed.
FTR, someone in your crew mistook me as you on Friday. Cosplaying Cloud Strife. When I was cosplaying Kittan. Yeahh.....
Question: does NYAF pre-screen skits for WCS, or do people simply bring their best game because the grand prize IS WCS? Just curious...
We totally pre-screen. The 1st year, someone wanted to cosplay (I kid you not) the Rock (yes the pro-wrestler) and for his skit, he was gonna badmouth Funimation and Viz for 3 minutes. As his WCS skit. Yes, I'm serious. It was literally called "The Weirdiest Sh!t." Yeah....needless to say it didnt happen.
Not sure what was cut this year, if anything though.
AnimeAngelBlue
10-01-2008, 08:58 AM
Yeah, NYAF does have a screening process, and its nerve wracking. Usually you don't find out if you made the cut until about a few weeks prior to the convention, and your wondering if all the work that you've been doing has basically been for nothing... lol...
But it does weed out a lot of the skits that really have nothing to do with the rules/guidelines.
LadyHawke78
10-01-2008, 01:45 PM
Ok. Didn't know that WCS was optional.
So, there is an ACTUAL pre-screening that's done aside from the logical "We're not going to allow anything that blatantly breaks the rules?" (Like the Rock skit that SW mentioned. WHY WOULD YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT???)
How is this done without soliciting waves of BAWWW DRAMU?

So overall.. I have to say I thought the NYAF masq. was pretty A++! *_*
I had my hopes up pretty high considering the WCS and was definitely impressed! I may be a little biased because I'm a big CLAMP fan, but I overall enjoyed practically everything. Some of my particular favorites had to be Sakura and Himawari's Dance Lesson and the Kingdom Hearts skit with Anti-Sora and Roxas. Shout-outs also to Dia and Elizabeth on their win, and also to Jin and Mario for Best in Show! You two are some of the few people I'd bust my butt all day stage-handing for when I wasn't even competing! XD <3

First off, Congratulations to Xaosin.
You're the second person I saw to propose on stage and it gets me every time.
I wish you guys much happiness.
As for Uncle Yo, from what I saw he was just trying to get stuff out of the way.
I can see where it could have been annoying for the performers, but he meant well.
As for the masquerade, can I say that it was phenomenal?
It was really something else. Like the best masquerade I've ever seen.
The audio was so good, I was so happy I could understand everything so easily.
Everyone was so well prepared as well.
It was executed really well.

Thank you again everyone for your well wishes. :)
I actually had the displeasure of meeting this Rock Cosplayer you all are talking about from last year. Quite rude and if I remember correctly, he was some form of Staff or Volunteer. On the Friday of NYAF, he had a V for Vendetta mask on and was harassing various cosplayers.
The second day, he was cosplaying the Rock and was lingering around our Naruto photoshoot. Since he saw that I was running it, he asked me if I could stop the group shots I had going on so that I could put him a center stage shot facing off Rock Lee. I smiled at him and told him to get the hell outta my photoshoot.

You need to replaced "told him to get the hell out" with "Stab him repeatedly in the face". Of course there's that whole "illegal" thing which is smiled fondly upon by John Law, but if he's rocking a V mask, that means he's a /b/-tard and nothing of value would be lost.

You need to replaced "told him to get the hell out" with "Stab him repeatedly in the face". Of course there's that whole "illegal" thing which is smiled fondly upon by John Law, but if he's rocking a V mask, that means he's a /b/-tard and nothing of value would be lost.
Indeed, though it would be well worth serving the prison time to save the world another minute of his idiocy. I was actually hoping to run into him again this year. Believe it or not, I actually had a lot of pent up stress with making sure everything with the proposal went down smoothly, so I would have loved to vent it out on him! :fuming: :bigtu:

Congratulations Jose! That was the sweetest, most surprising masquerade proposal I've ever seen. I too would actually like to see the skit, the setup was really funny.
I was floored by the quality of the skits. We need WCS at every con! I think the show really benefited from the screening process. Yes, we missed out on the joy of the Rock bashing Funimation, but life goes on.
I do not envy the judges on this one, it must've been a very close call. Congratulations to Dia and Elizabeth!
A favor- what is the name of the song from the Ah! My Goddess skit? It's totally stuck in my head. For that matter, so is the Beatmania one, I need to bug those guys for it!

On the Friday of NYAF, he had a V for Vendetta mask on and was harassing various cosplayers.
I doubt it's the same little goober from Otakon 2007 who was doing the same thing, touching people's costumes w/o asking, or jumping into photoshoots when he doesn't belong. :untrust: I reported him to a BCC security guard who told him to stop doing that, and he did. I saw him this year again but i think he wasn't as bad.
However, this year at Otakon there was a guy wearing a suit, a big afro-wig, and a VFV mask and kept posing with cosplayers, interrupting photoshoots. I remember he jumped in the middle of one of my chibi-shoots of the Laughing Octopus & Crying Wolf and wouldn't leave until DressDragon flashed her staff/security badge and told him to get out.. When he asked why, she started listing the reasons WHY he didn't belong in there.. hehe :D
I don't understand why some otaku think it's okay to don a VFV-mask and go around harrassng cosplayers as some sort of cool gimmick.. it's very immature..

It was stuck in my head too! I looked and someone posted that it was a remix of 'Alegria' from Cirque Du Soleil. It was perfect with the performance! The Beatmania song was 'Destination Unknown'...also a remix version. Trying to find the version from the skit...but the others that I have found sound pretty good as well.

Oh, oh, what is 4-chan!
Srsly, go to /b/ for 5 minutes, and everything will make sense. Unforunately the chances are "going retard" as a side effect are pretty high.
Tropic Thunder reference? Very much so.

I didn't think the MC was bad but I did wonder why he referred to my character as a boy and when he announced our skit called us Matt James and his cosplay crew. In rehersel we didn't get on stage in time because he announced us as a boy who's doing this to spite his father or something weird like that. Other than that I had no problem with him just thought it was weird.
Other than that I loved the Code Geass skit and team Osaka. Their wasn't a skit I didn't like actually, that's really rare for me!

The version we used in the skit was something Lizzy crafted out of, I think, 3 different versions of the song. I *think* I might have it on my computer somewhere...otherwise I suppose I could go pester her, heh.

Congrats on the judge's award! That choreograph was great and the tricks with the discs were awesome. ^.^ *pokes* If you ever find the song and remember...mind sending it my way? Please? lol Thx either way. ^____^
