I can't...really find any good pictures of it on the web, but other fans of the series might know..
Can anyone identify the robe he's wearing...?

What do you mean identify?
It's a fairly simple long-sleeve robe (yukata (http://www.japanya.co.uk/img/ProductPic/0601111.jpg) I suppose?) with one side left down. I think that's what you're asking? It isn't pants. >.>;

Oh... yanno, I never found out what that robe was called (if anything), but it's simple to put together two pieces - a skirt like piece, and a piece that goes over the left shoulder - to make that robe. If you want to see some more shots of Makoto Shishio, why not take a look at this AMV. Watching it gave me a lot of help when I made my Makoto Shishio costume.

It's a plain kimono, standard Edo-period gear. He's just wearing it off one shoulder.

He's wearing a kimono, probably a kosode (short sleeved kimono if I don't remember wrong) I think.
