View Full Version : Dyed fabric too bright - how to proceed?

So, I'm very much a n00b to fabric dyeing - I've dyed stuff before, but it was never things that needed to be a specific shade (think dyeing clothing for school spirit day and stuff).

I dyed some fabric earlier today, and it ended up too bright a color. It's not quite the wrong shade, it's just a bit too vibrant (I'm sorry, I'm not quite sure how to describe it.) Color is too "saturated" maybe? It doesn't need to drastically whiten up or anything, just look less bright - almost like adding grey to it. For fixing it, I've thought of two possible solutions:

1. Using RIT color remover (I used RIT dye) to fade it some.
2. Dyeing again using a little bit of black or some grey over the bright color, in an attempt to grey it out.

For those of you with a lot more experience dyeing things, which one of these sounds like a better idea? I'm sorry if this sounds stupid; I really have no idea what I'm doing.

I'd do test swatches, but right now my only way to dye things right now is via the washing machine, which makes test swatches a bit more difficult to do because I don't know exactly how much water is going into the machine, to get the dye/water ratio right. Any advice you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

If you need it to be lighter in shade, the color remover is a good call. If you just need it to be less vivid, use diluted dye of the opposite color. From what you've said, the second option sounds like it would work better for you.

Awesome. I'll go with grey/black then - good to know it'll achieve the desired effect . Thank you so much for your help! :)

Not necessarily black. The opposite color.
For example, the opposite of red is green, and the opposite of purple is green.
At least, I'm assuming that was what was meant by it.

Ah, I already did it. XD

I ended up using some grey, and got the slightly greyed-out look I needed. (Maybe I didn't describe it quite right in my first post; I'm sorry...)

I'll keep that in mind for the future, though. ^^

This happened to me last year. I just threw the fabric into the washing machine with some Clorox Bleach (it was that 10% bleach mixture) and I believe some detergent as well, and after a cycle or two the color was very much toned down.
