Here's a list of what company is owned by who. It's quite interesting when you consider the hoopla of advertising that goes on. This is something to bear in mind when you go shopping. Sometimes the "designer" brand has an equivalent in the drugstore :) (sometimes, but not always)

Some of these lines make skincare as well, but I thought I'd list them since it's always good to know ;)

Bonne Bell & Lip Smackers are independantly owned.

Revlon owns Almay and are also independantly owned, 83% of the company is actually owned by Ron Perelman.

Sally Hansen is owned by Del Labs which also owns New York Color (NYC), Naturistics and La Cross.

Wet 'N' Wild is owned by Markwins Beauty (formerly AM Cosmetics).

Interesting.

The bigger question is: the different brands owned by the same holding are of equivalent quality, just priced and marketed differently for market segmentation? Or they are completely different products?

I think there are cases of both...

L'oreal and Lancome frequently come out with similar products but the quality levels vary. More often than not, I find that L'oreal's products are inferior to Lancome. The only thing that is comparable between the two are lip products and eyeliners.

MAC quality has deteriorated since Estee Lauder acquired it but they continue to come up with unique products for a considerably lower price point than most high-end brands. Basically, all of the Lauder own brands retained the original creative/art directors so there was little change in the product line other than an exodus of low-performing products.
