I want an SPD uniform..
But I dont want to be Syd or Z.
Out of the two, I guess Z would suit me better, since she's Latina and stuff...
Id love to be SPD Red from A-Squad (which is a girl), but their uniform style is different, and in my opinion, kinda ugly...

Modify it a bit to suit your style.
Theres nothing wrong with it.

alter the designe or change the color if you want.
The most important thing is that you like it.

On Ebay there is a shop that sells power ranger/sentai repoductions anxjapan or acc props. Has anyone dealt with this seller/shop?

Stay away from anxjapan. I ordered a dekamaster / shadowranger costume from him 5 months ago. have not recieved it, or had any of my numerous e-mails answered. Last time he contacted me was 3 weeks ago telling me that he was checking with the mail courier, because they picked up the package. But he left no tracking number or anything yet. So i'm out around $900.

I repeat deal with ANXJAPAN on ebay at your own risk.

The good:
The suit is fairly decent but kinda weak zipper on the back
The Helmet but extremly tight fitting
The Gloves made of leather

The Bad:
Customer service-I had to file a dispute and leave negative feed back to get him to respond to my emails you think someone who takes 745 of your money would be more responsive
Shipping: If he says he shipped it he probally didnt it took him a week to provide a tracking number(which was wrong)

The ugly:
guantlets made for a kid i had to add elastic bands into them just to slide over the sleeves the velcro was useless
Boots well the accent pcs are hot glued on and will eventualy come off, the zippers both broke on the back. The zipper was a cheap zipper I had to add elastic where the zipper was.
Paint marks over certain points
Pinstriping tape used instead of paint in places.

Heres my advice deal with him through ebay
my ebay id is pittcanna and if you want to see what feedback was left between me and him just go to ebay

dont do business outside of ebay with him dispute and feedback are a defense for the buyer.

so here is how grading is for him
50% for cust service
75% for item
100% for aggravation

Well its been several months since I started working on my deka red costume and I kept saying I'll post progress pics but never did. So now I am going to write a really long post about my experience building my own helmet so for anyone not interested you can just skip all of this.

Earlier this year I made a magishine costume from anizona. The costume itself was cool but the helmet was shapped a lot more like boba fets or bucket style if you will because it just dropped ontop of my head. I knew I could do better. So after reading some guides in this thread I decided to give it a shot.

The first step was to build a mold, what was recommended was to get a wig display head and cover that in clay then sculpt the shape. I for some reason decided to just make it out of cardboard and duck tape. It was off in some areas but it did work. I then covered the mold in vasiline and then fiber glass. This proved very difficult as fiberglass just wanted to fall off because the mold is all greased up. After playing around with it for hours I was able to get the shape of it but the mouth part which was going to be slightly sunken in didnt turn out very well.

I was able to make a front and a back half of the helmet this way but at this point I was really frustrated with fiberglass and went back to bondo because I was more familiar with it. I really should have done a few more coats of fiber glass and just used bondo as a filler rather then building up with it like I did. This got me stuck in a very long game of adding a little more here then sanding and adding a little more here and sanding. It was driving me crazy. once there was enough there I was able to screw in a latch on the top to connect the two halves.

I then used a bondo hole filler thing. It was a tube for like $3 and you apply it over little dips in the material, let it dry then sand it down. This really helped but I wasnt able to get all of it perfect. For the paint I used automotive spray paint and it gave it a really nice shine and then i hand painted the other colors on. For the visor I used clear plastic vinyl and a black piece of fabric and glued it on the inside. If it is a thin enough fabric you can see pretty clearly out of it. I then added the extra things on the side of the head.

ttp://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/neocarbunkle/S2010009.jpg (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/neocarbunkle/S2010009.jpg)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/neocarbunkle/S2010008.jpg

The helmet barely fit my head. I really had to squeeze it on and unless I had my ears held down with my neck piece me ears would get a little scratched up trying to get it off. It was really hot inside and thats why I didnt glue the vinyl on the bottom so that I could get some air in right next to my nose. I only had to add a few pieces of craft foam to avoid the rugged inside texture.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/neocarbunkle/S2010010.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/neocarbunkle/S2010011.jpg

so now if I were to do it again this is how I would do it.

Choose a helmet that isnt overly complicated
build a simple generic helmet mold out of clay and a wig head
cover the mold in vasaline
taking a lot of time and starting from the top cover the front half off the mold with fiber glass making sure to keep the shape in tact
repeat for the back half
with the halves removed cover them with two more coats of fiber glass
sand them down
apply bondo as a way of filling in gaps
for any extra part that cant be added on later such as a raised or lowered part, glue on cardboard of the appropiate size and shape
cover the new parts in fiberglass, sand down, bondo, and sand
using hinges attach the two pieces at the top
as needed fill in the holes using bondo and the tube of bondo filler
drill in the small holes for eyes and any extra holes that wont be noticable for more air circulation
attach either laches on the out side or velcro straps on the inside to keep it closed
paint
add on any extra parts such as logos, mouth pieces, or antenas

I personally am going to take a break from sentai costumes for a while but with enough experience I think people can make fairly decent home made sentai helmets.

Basically I'm going for a budget original Green Ranger costume that still looks very good. Thus far, I have been successful - with the only expensive thing being the helmet kit I bought for $100 on eBay. The second most expensive thing was the belt buckle prop at $25. The rest - foamie material for the shield and gauntlets, paints, vinyl for gauntlets and holster were pretty cheap - bought at Joanne's Fabric or Michaels.

First the pics:
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a176/nrinvakiljedi/rangerpose1.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a176/nrinvakiljedi/rangerpose2.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a176/nrinvakiljedi/rangerpose3.jpg

The $10 zentai suit is not 100% accurate (for one thing the chest diamond is too small - but it's covered by my dragon shield anyway - so who cares.

The dragon shield is made entirely of foamies, cut and hot-glued (I know the raised curves should be pointier - but at least my shield has the right shape and dimensions of the actual Japanese show - traingular and NOT circular like the American fabric one). It's not quite finished yet - needs a few touch ups, the black diamond around the center raised diamond, and the under-arm straps. Velcro attachment at the back. It gives quite a good range of motion and is fairly sturdy. It would survive a few bumps, but not serious crushing.

I made the belt using a buckle from powerprops on ebay attached to elastic strap material (via screws and a piece of plastic cut to size) with a parachute buckle in the back. The black lines are simply sharpy that was added after painting tape was carefully layed down to create two thin "tracks" to fill in.

Dragon dagger holster was sewn by hand using black vinyl and upholstery thread. Velcro on the little holder piece across the hilt keeps the dagger nice and secure (won't fall out). I also cut a half-circle into the sheath so that the gold tubing and dragon ranger symbol are visible. Dragon Dagger is just Bandai America's.

The gloves are the ones that came with the suit, but I made the gauntlets since they didn't customize the gloves to have triangles instead of diamonds. White vinyl base with spray painted gold foamie rings at the top (hot-glued) and unpainted foamie triangles (super-glued). Velcro attachment on the underside.

Still need to figure out what I'm doing for boots (I'll add the triangles and gold ring like I did for the gaunlets), fix the mask (it lacks a face hole and needs more white on the neck) and put together the helmet kit I got from ebay (not pictured).

So I'm new to the forums and I've been reading the posts of the homemade how-to helmets. Unfortunately it scares me to do so and so for this year I'll probably start out easy with the ninja rangers costume for this year. If anyone made a really good one with pictures of the steps, I'd appreciate it I think so would everyone else in this thread.

I ordered a manican head the other day with intentions of trying out my steps to make one of the more simple helmets maybe magired or something. I'll take pictures of that but its going to be a while.

Been awhile since I posted here. I am planning to start working on Hurricane Blue (Blue Wind Ranger). I've decided to make the helmet using featherweights cardboard method- I don't think I'm ready for fiberglass anything.

Has anyone made helmets with his method. It really looks like it can be done- especially since the Ninja Storm helmet are relatively simple.

I myself did not have a tutorial to work with, but I asked CorazonBlue lots of questions over IM while I was doing it, and I also played around trying to figure things out on my own. I'm actually making helmets of the entire original team (excluding green, ironically, since I bought a fibre-glass kit). I have turned the formerly proto-green helmet into the blue helmet, which is basically done. I rounded off the top of the helmet as best as I could with additional layers of paper tape, and further evened out the visor slot. I spray painted it, and cut out the details from foamie and spray painted those before hot gluing them on. Here are more pics. (they aren't the best, but I took them late at night right after finishing it)

As I work on the other helmets (I have the 2nd one about 45% done shape wise) I will take pics and attempt to put a pictoral tutorial together.

This is what I have done.

Basically, you need a shape to start off with, something round like a paint-ball helmet or the like. Wrap it in plastic food wrap (like sarand wrap or however it is spelled) to protect it from the glue of the tape. Then cut strips and wet them on the underside with a very moist sponge (not dripping water though, you don't want the topside getting wet) and just coat the upper rounded area completely with a few layers. You may also cut the tape into thinner strips or different shapes, depending on the helmet-object you are using to build off of.

Let that dry for an hour or two - it gets fairly solid. Then remove the helmet from inside and begin building layers downward by adding longer strips of tape horizontally around the bottom edge. A new tecnique I figured out with the more recent helmet is to only partially attach the strip to the edge you ar extending, then you can put a second piece on the inside in the same fashion, thus covering the sticky part (the reason you have to plastic wrap the helmet) and strengthening the overall structure. This also helmets give you a smooth and uniform appearance. After that dries - you should have a Boba Fett-ish style helmet, add overlapping layers of vertical and horizontal strips on the INSIDE to strengthen the structure.

After that, there is a lot of cutting down to get the proper bottom edge shape, and you cover those rough edges with paper tape that you fold over the edge to create a crease, THEN moisten with the sponge and stick down firmly on both sides. You can use several thinner strips to create the rounded edge look and have them close to over another but not quite overlapping. Use the same technique for the visor when you cut that out (which you should do by drawing HALF the visor on a piece of paper, cut that out and trace it over one side of your helmet, flip and do the same to the other side to avoid having to keep recutting and edge-ing to make them symmetrical.

I built up the mouth area using strips of carboard, covered in paper-tape to make it uniform. The lips are cardboard shapes hotglued down, and covered with paper-tape.

the hot glue weighs down the front a bit, so when I add padding to keep it from wobbling I will strategically add hot glue to balance the weight issue. Overall the structure is pretty sturdy (it'd survive a fall off a table without any damage, but not being stepped on), and very light. I also think it's a bit easier than the cardboard tutorial.

I decided to make a power ranger costume myself for a Halloween party I'm going to, so it wasn't really cost effective to do the whole fiberglass thing. I started a couple of days ago on a MMPR green helmet and I'm all done on all but the visor and mouthpiece. I'll probably make the visor from black acetate or netting like a previous poster.

I went to the local charity shop and picked up a child's bicycle helmet for the basic shape and papertaped over it. I left the plastic sheet (the bit with the design on it) inside the helmet which makes it very comfortable after putting in the original velcro padding.

This is my result so far, all made of papertape and cardboard shapes for the raised design.

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/2345/rangerunfinishedxi8.png

It's actually really strong, and lightweight. Plus it cost me around 10 pounds all in all.

It's not a perfect replica, but like someone has already said, it's far more endearing to have a little personal flair in something.

Absolutely everything is made from papertape and cardboard, black paper with holes in for visors. I made the morphers myself with the same trusty method.

What's surprised me most is the strength and resilience. Ive had these out clubbing for around 5 days and they're all fine, if a little war weary.

Okay here goes the nice tutorial on
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN POWER RANGER ETC ETC ETC HELMETS!

Step one is to make a sculpture of your helmet. The best way I know of to do this (as well as the cheapest) is to by a mannequin head roughly the size of your own.

Next is to take air dry clay and clump it all over this thing into ROUGHLY the shape of the helmet.

Next after it hardens you should draw with a sharpie on the clay the shape of the eyes and lens and etc. and then take files, sand paper of both thick and fine grits and even dremels drills etc (whatever you think you can do this part with really) and you file and sand this thing into the shape you need.

Now that your sculpture is complete rub vaseline ALLLLLLL over it (dont leave globs or clumps it should be a smooth greasy coating not a something all goopy)

Now take a jug of fiberglass resin (available in LARGE amounts for $20 at lowes and homedepot in the adhesives section) and mix it up. Dont be too afraid to use those drops of hardener when mixing this either. For an amount the size of a pepsi can of liquid I would use around 80+ drops. Dont go crazy though or itll over harden and crack so no spraying in a jet of it. COUNT THOSE DROPS.

You paint this on the greased one half at a time. For most helmets you paint on the face first and after it hardens. Then you add strips of fiber weave cloth(also in adhesives section) and paint them to this hard resin with MORE resin. Once thats dry its REALLY hard and tough because its a full on helmet piece. mark its outline and pull it off of the greased mold. THen you would paint the back half of the mold in resin repeat the weaving and remove it when its hardened. If they dont fit uniformly after wards you can sand them into shape.

If anything is not smooth itll sand so dont worry.

You connect these by attaching a hinge inside the crown of the helmet with iquid nail to bond the hinge in place. NO screw holes this way.

Next youll need to make snaps to hold the sides on correctly. If anyone remembers the white ranger removing his helmet youll know what I mean. Basically liquid nail a snap on both sides of the helmet. Cut two pieces of vinyl and attach the other half of the snaps to these. Snap them to the mounted snaps and liquid nail the new vinyl buckles to the sides of the helmet where they lay. You'll want to have them snapped before mounting to ensure a proper fit.

PAINTING
DO NOT USE ACRYLIC OR CRAFT PAINTS!!!
Many is the helmet that looked like garbage by using a cheasy paint. Instead primer the helmet with spray primer. And (your choice) you can go glossy plastic look like power rangers or metallic biker helmet look.

Power Ranger look is simple.
Find the spray color you need and spray it. If you need a custom color use airbrush paints which are modeled in design to be like car paint and just mix them.
After this buy Krylon Clear Glaze finish. Yes you could top coat with polyurethane to get that glossed finish...in like 50 coats though. Ive used this stuff and it takes ONE COAT. It takes 24 hours to set right and its incredible. Its whats used to finish ceramics and GUITARS. Use this trust me. Just check my belt buckle out on my Skwisgaar cosplay to see what one coat did.

Metallic look
Go buy airbrush paint at a craft store. It will literally say airbrush paint and be in bottles the size of craft paint. No Im not talking about car model paint. This stuff is for airbrushing designs on clothing. The thing is its based upon car paint and it works exactly the same. Its thin so metal fleck will cause the whole paint job to look metallic. If it was thicker like other paints that couldnt go through an air gun the metal fleck would just look like glitter on your helmet. Its like a paint glaze or tint and it goes on smoothly with a foam brush and wont streak.
Next buy some metal fleck in the airbrush section. This is just pulverised glitter in various colors. Want that black helmet to glisten purple like batmans tights when the lights hit it? Black airbrush paint + purple fleck mixed together and brushed on.
Want more metal? Add more fleck. Less metallic? Less fleck.
Mixing colors gets fun here folks and I encourage experimenting with this incredible stuff. Green paint with gold fleck is beautiful. Red paint with bronze fleck is awesome. The list goes on and on. GO CRAZY.

Yeah anyhow mix fleck and airbrush paint here and then use the Krylon CLear Glaze product I mentioned earlier. Its at wal-mart for $4

Now for the lens!
Cut out the area on your helmet that this will go into. You can do this several ways.
Cut plastic off a coke bottle and liquid nail it inside the helmet then use car tint on it purchased from a local glass tinter.
Use clear dark vinyle mounted in the same manner.
Go to smooth-on.com purchase crystal clear 202 liquid plastic and cast a lens off the piece you cut out in the same manner that the helmet was cast then tint it.
Your choice.

FInally making the helmet FIT. ITll wiggle. A LOT. Best method is to just slowly pack in soft bed foam until you have a nice fit. Not snug but nice. Then use spray glue on some felt and stick it to the foam for a nice soft fit.

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT!!!!!!

-PAPER CASTING BONUS
This is good for round helmets like megaman that have few details.
Take a balloon and blow it up to adequate size.
Draw helmet on it with marker.
Take elmers glue and paint strips of paper all over balloon.
When dry pop ballon and peal out.
YOu now have a stiffish paper helmet you can see the marker pattern inside.
Cut the pattern of your helmet off the lines that were transferred onto the paper.
Now inflate a new balloon into this helmet.
Brush on bondo to the helmet.
Then fiber resin/fiber weave the bondod helmet (the bondo SEALED the paper so it wouldnt melt and distort!)
Now sand and paint your round helmet!
Do any cutting in half and snap adding as necessary.
This was invented and showed to me by my wife when she started her quickman helmet as seen below.

would you change this tutorial in anyway if i was to say, make a very detailed helmet such as the mmpr white ranger/kibaranger?

Hi, could you guys help me?

I'm looking to get a power ranger outfit But i lack any skills in the area required. I was wondering about prices and where to get one from.

I was thinking of the Red Power Ranger from series 1, MMPR, Or the Blue Ranger fro power rangers in Space.

thanks.

I plan on cosplaying Wolzard/Koragg from MagiRangers/PR Mystic Force
I like the name Koragg better, sorry,it sounds cooler,i mean my name is Lee,do you know how stupid I'd look if I had an L on my chest everyday,I'm not a detective,i could never pull it off(yay for randomness)

Anywho,I plan on useing some random demon costume made of rubber i found last holloween to make the basis for my Koragg armor,I have enough reference pictures,I just have to lose more weight to do his costume, currently I have lost about 40 pounds and i still have roughly 70 more to go,but when I lose about another 30 pounds or more I'm gunna start my wargreymon from digimon costume

But I digest, Koragg will be a difficult journey, but I like being the infamous badass from series,so lol and muahahaha.

Vacuumforming,
heatgun plus wonderflex/flosshape/craft fun foam,
paper mache/cardboard/rigid wrap/resin/bondo/autobody clear coat repair spray

what ever method there is to use to make a ranger costume, searching the 56 great costume tutorial sites can help you get a good feel of how to do a lot of stuff, yet its hard to fathom the billion times you'll mess up from gaining experience on how to use these methods, lmao.

Well i'm done rambling, thank you PR thread, you have kept me busy for my computer class at school, have a great day.

I love seeing so many people interested in Ranger Cosplay. I try answering as many PMs as I can about my Ranger suit. Sorry to those of you I miss I get a full inbox a lot. There is a lot of work that goes into it, but for those who want a cost effective costume ebay is your friend. I did a lot of part matching and most of the things were custom order or I had to make/have friends help me make. However, the Bulkwork I did with a lot of the custom things I've seen seem to be easier to come by online now if you're looking to buy premade props and accessories. So good luck, and may the power protect you ;)

Hay guys. First off let me say Hi, I'm not sure if this is my first post, pretty sure it is, but anyways. I'm starting on my first MMPR cosplay costume. I'd like to say thanks to everyone who posted tips on how to make the costume (specially the helmet).

This is my first costume, I have already made the morpher thanks to the help from rangerboard.com. I am not done w/ it yet, I have an idea to redo the morpher in carbon fiber. Once I'm done, hopefully it'll look better than the real thing. :crylaugh:

Right now I am starting to work on the helmet. I just bought all the main things I needed for now. 25lb and 2.2lb air dry clay (the 2.2 lb clay will be used as a filler). I also made an armature from some wood I bought from home depot. I'll post pics as I progress w/ the project.

Again, Thanks everyone.

Here's the start of the helmet. I Just finished the base and it's now ready to dry. Reason I need it to dry is because if I add anymore clay, I'm afraid it will will just break and the pole will go through the helmet. So there you have it. Planning on starting up again tomorrow after it has a chance to harden up..

First of all, amazing cosplays! I've been a fan of the Power Rangers since I was a kid (stopped watching after Zeo but still love the classic MMPR series). Talk about a nostalgia overload. :toothy:

I saw the Emo Rangers spoof mentioned earlier in the thread, and thought it was hilarious as a group of my friends created the Awesome Rangers (http://youtube.com/user/AwesomeRangers). Since we're all broke college students, the helmets were made out of cardboard, duct tape, and Halloween hockey masks. :bigtu: I'm using the advice from this thread to help make our uniforms a bit more sentai-looking for our next movie.

Also, a great reference I've found is http://www.supersentai.com/database/ - it has pics from every liveaction sentai series, including ZyuRanger. :geek:

So... I finally finished my Hurricane Blue outfit and wore it at Ohayocon 2008. I did the featherweight helmet method.... I don't think I will ever do that again. Then again, it was my first time ever making anything like that and I didn't have a putty knife. Since it came out rather beat up looking, I decided to become a "bloody ranger" as my friends called it.

Hey guys I want to make the Pink Ninjetti outfit from the MMPR Movie, and I want to know if anybody had an ideas of what patterns I could/should use?

I don't know if this pattern is out of season or not, but I used a Simplicity pattern for karate gi's kimonos and ninja costumes to make my White Ninjetti Points to edit: the pants will have to be made wider. Of course the obvious editing to the tabbard. Its best to make your own face mask and hood, as the ones on that pattern tend to look a little beat up (either that or i just sucked at making it).I'm currently in the process of remaking the hood, but here's how the rest of my costume looked http://www.cosplay.com/photo/1398668/

So, in the 6 months since I've last posted, I've become a HUGE fan of Japanese sentai (aka Power Rangers before FoxKids and Disney got to them). I can't watch 10 minutes of Operation Overdrive or Jungle Fury without losing my mind, but I'll watch multiple episodes and movies of DekaRanger or AbaRanger without a second thought. ^^

Right now, my two favorite series are ZyuRanger (MMPR) and MagiRanger (Mystic Force).

After watching MagiRanger: Bride of Infershia, I fell in love with Yamazaki's bride dress (http://supersentai.com/database/2005_magiranger/images/magi-vb-movie01.jpg). Right now, I lack the time, money, or skills for it, but someday, I intend on making it. *crosses fingers*

Been awhile since anyone posted on here. I havent posted, but I lurked XD. Anyway I was wondering if anyone was going to Anime Detour? I plan on going as the yellow power ranger. And then Im buying either a full body unitard, or a mock neck unitard to use for the costume, and then sew on the white fabric. I plan on buying halloween boots, like gogo boots or something. If it has heels, their generally a wood or cork or something that I can cut off and put the bottoms back on. The gloves Ill just buy around the same time. Ill also make the belt, and holster, and then buy the morpher/coin and the blaster ^^
Anyway, if anyone does decide to go Id love to meet up ^^

EDIT: Well so far, ive boughten the blaster, coin, and morpher. Plan on getting a then clay hard form for the helmet and dipping it in liquid fiberglass. ill post how it goes.

Making a MMPR costume and well, im stumped on the helmet. To be honest I'd be willing to spend $200 on a helmet. Know of anyone who would do it? Also, because I'm willing to by the helmet, I have to compensate with the belt. Anyone know of any alternatives for the belt? Thanks!

Alright well I have some nifty tips of things to use for those who make their own full costume. First off, for the suit body, I ordered a bright yellow zentai lycra. It comes with the face and everything, but I dont mind, I can snip that off and add my own diamonds and white part.
Next for boots. I found the Bamboo Tinker white mid calf boots are awesome. However, these are going out, I think they are a year old, so finding bigger sizes is hard. I finally (after 4 weeks of looking) found a size 10 womens. Next for gloves, Im looking for white motorcyle gloves. On both boots and gloves, I can add yellow diamonds. So thats all I have for now, still waiting on helmet but cross fingers. Im supposed to get it around x-mas time.

I have a new question because a friend of mine is doing a costume from MMPR as well. he wants to do a putty, but we're having an issue with the mask. I know we should make it from latex, but none of us have ever worked with latex before. Does anyone know someone that might be able to make the mask, and a bit on the reasonable side so we dont "break our bank" so to speak?

JonathanNC22

Best bet is to contact a user on RangerBoard named Buzz's Room as he has created the mask and he usually sells them at reasonable rates and they are out of latex.

its not that old/dead yet anyway XD
as for the clay, if youre able to use water to keep it connected for the final product that should be good. or there is also Prang DAS air finish modeling clay. Basically it air dries instead of needing to be heated and it can patch the clay mask together if its cracked. It IS VERY IMPORTANT to correct it. If their are / is imperfections when you put on the mold before the fiberglass it will put the cracks in the mold. So when you DO use the fiberglass, it will have indents and imperfections that can be hard, or just wont be able to get out of the helmet.

Ok everything is going good so far with my helmet I pulled it off the mold and it came out real nice. However the fiberglass sheets i used are still visible in some areas and there are runs from the resin running. How do I get it to be super smooth like others I have seen? Just sand it like crazy?

Dr.Saki
10-26-2008, 01:03 AM
Extreme sanding and practice. most of the professional ones, are again professional but mass produced. Id work on sanding it as much as possible, thats why many layers of fiberglass are nice. Just work the outside till its good and the inside till its...comfortable enough to wear. Thats all you really can do.

There are many low cost options for geki red. Geki red is the simplest ranger no cuffs boots are modified sneaks the helmet well you can always get a comisson, the changers well you can get the boj toy.

However if you must comission out the whole thing here is one by herocosplay.com

I've watched all the (American) Power Rangers series' and I want to do at least one costume from one of them...a ranger costume first, but maybe I'll tackle a villain later on. I'm considering the original pink ranger because I look more like her under the mask (Kimberly I think was her name), but I love the Mystic Force blue ranger's design (though I look NOTHING like her under the mask) (Vida I think).

So my questions are:
- Which would you rather see cosplayed?
- Do you think it's important to look like them under the mask?

It is better to cosplay as one you would want to do then to take others opinon. But most will say go with the pink mmpr as it is more common and reconizable. As for under the mask your going to be wearing an underhood anyway and your mask will be on for most pictures. So it is not really important. On a side note its only them when they dont have there mask on anyway lol the stunt scenes are filmed with different actors.

On a bigger side note most of the stunt actors for the power rangers were guys so real slender guys fit the role of women. Trini mmpr yellow in japan was a guy.

So short answer do which design you like the most but the majority is going to say mmpr pink. And it doesnt really matter with out the mask.

Tetsuya: I'd think that the mask is kind of eponymous and any ranger would be recognized as at least a Power Ranger, although maybe not specifically. I'm really leaning toward Mystic Force Blue right now, since I'd be keeping the mask on the whole time. Maybe I can get a friend to be MF pink (they are sisters)...that'd be rad =3

I assume you'd like to make your PR helmet from resin/fiber and using the dummy head to make the sculpt for the helmet's negative...

That way is a little bit complicated... but useful if you'd like to produce a lot of helmet with the exact form and size...

But if you'd like to make helmet just for yourself.. actually there are an easier way...
My suggestion is to make a helmet using motorcycle helmet as a base for your rangers helmet...just like what I did for my son..

Dragon shield up close but still missing 1/2 tubing around collar (http://home.comcast.net/%7Eryu-kumon/forum/projects/dragonranger/shieldClose.jpg)

If you can't buy it, make it.

Once you make it, if enough people like it, sell it and maybe you can make enough money to buy something else.

Speaking of, this one will be on ebay within the next week or so.

Hello Fellow Zyuranger/Power Ranger Fanatics!

I am wondering if someone could give a little advice - having never worked with lycra, nor attempted a body suit before, what are the necessary layers of clothing one should wear beneath the outer colored suit of a Zyuranger? Also, do any tips on sewing four way stretch material exist? I would appreciate any and all help that is given; also thank you to those who have contributed assistance to those less knowledgeable, myself included.

I am in the planning stage of the Dragon Ranger, or Burai, from the Zyuranger show and will be the main costume I wear however, as a test I am considering creating either the Tyranno Ranger, Mammoth Ranger, Tricera Ranger or the Tiger Ranger but cannot decide which to do. Whichever suit I do will later be auctioned on eBay. Progress on the aforementioned will be posted here as well as various ranger boards.

Any assistance, advice, or opinions are more than welcomed by not only myself but others in the same situation as well. Again, thank you.

Hello,

There is something I forgot to ask - the 'hoods' worn under the helmet by cosplayers, how are they made and are they affixed to the suit or are they more like a dickie?

Thanks,
Burai

Hoods for the suits are not attached ... They are swen and then have like 2 elastic bands I will try to take a picture of the one for my dekamaster/Shadow Ranger costume!

yeah thats my plan. thanks for the idea but im a bit of a perfectionist and i want it to be perfect in every way. a motorcycle helmet wont be like the original. :) do you think i could a get an old manikin head from a department store or something?

I would recommend going to www.monstermakers.com and look for the deluxe sculpting armature. Then you can sculpt your helmet based of a full size human head... Then start your sculpt based on whatever helmet your trying to do. While the Motorcycle thing is more of a low budget way to make them.:skidude:

I've done a power ranger outfit and the most difficult part is really the helmet. I don't have 300$ to spend on one so I've put on a basket ball instead. It's a bit sloppy but it was doing the job for the time I had to wear it.

For a complete helmet now a days is that price they used to be 500 + but you also have the option of buying them in kit form. Which is 100-200 as long as you take the time to finish them which isnt much!

Hello,

I recently bought some white nylon/lycra and I'm perplexed at what to do for the white appliqués - the nylon/lycra is somewhat transparent atop of the green! What has everyone else done on this matter? I also don't want the appliqués to appear "puffy" as they were during the first season of MMPR.

For sewing stretch material, which stitch should I use - I have a whole slew to choose from on my sewing machines. Should I use a zigzag (normal, two, or three point), stretch stitch (lightning), triple stretch stitch, or an overcastting stretch stitch (three to choose from)? Send a private message with your opinion.

As for the center diamond on the Zyuranger/MMPR, is 10 1/2 inches length and 9 1/2 inches width seem accurate or should it be longer? Is it symmetrical on its horizontal axis, or does it seem longer on the lower portion than the top?

Also, does anyone know who makes the Tricera Ranger/Blue Ranger Helmet? I can't decide between the Tricera Ranger (blue) or the Tiger Ranger (yellow)! Send a message with your suggestions.

JonathanNC22 - Thank you, I am drafting my own hood/dickie pattern and will start sewing it soon.

To everyone, thank you for your assistance and opinions.

It's actually really strong, and lightweight. Plus it cost me around 10 pounds all in all.

It's not a perfect replica, but like someone has already said, it's far more endearing to have a little personal flair in something.

Im sorry to beat the dead corpse, but anybody can link me a tutorial on bicycle helmet & cardboard helmet making??? Please???

In Indonesia we usually combined paper mache with polycarbon sheets...

Papermache is used for basic helmet form and polycarbon is used for the details...

some example could be seen at my friends site:

Sorry it is in Indonesian language.. :P

those look amazing. i want to ask how the polycarbon is shaped and in what places is it used? i've mostly seen craft foam used for detailing like that

I am not sure on the bump... now I am a little confused on that tutorial as its not really complete nor does it explain anything on it and was done back in may... I see that he was using saw dust and white glue to a point. but the rest of it makes no sense. like what he used smooth it out in the process. I mean I make my helmets out of fiberglass and resin but I am just curious on this tutorial.

Hello, this is my first post here. I was wondering: did anyone attempt to make a Power Ranger costume from the movie? And does anyone even know how it could be made?

This (http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/7526/prmcnh.jpg) is a picture of a costume from the movie (with the helmet off). IMO, that looks a lot better than the "normal" costumes from the series: while the series used plain ol' spandex, the movie used PVC, plus a lot of parts added for detail, made with what I guess is some kind of hard plastic.

EDIT:
I found three pictures (http://s158.photobucket.com/albums/t119/metaclipse/Power%20Rangers/?action=view&current=suits-redrangs.jpg) of what look like replicas of Power Ranger costumes from the movies. Have they been made by anyone who posts here?

These are the stunt costumes I believe. As far as people attempting to make it, there has, though no one has been sucessful at completing one. However, WildRanger5 and somone else in germany have these stunt suits. I have blue and pink chest armor, but I lent it to someone at the moment. And I hope my last post didn't come off as condescending to anyone, or mean. And Lol@beetleborgs.

Looking to make Duke Argh Tsue Tsue from Gao Ranger (aka Toxica from Wild Force )

anybody got some good pics or know where I can find some? My VHS tapes of Gao are unaccessable at present, I don't have the series yet on dvd, and I never watched Wild Force...

Part of me really wants to attempt Tsuruhime's white ninja robes from Ninja Sentai Kakuranger. I'm having trouble finding good reference photos or even clips of the series. Fortunately, from the little bit I have seen, I can get a good idea of how it's put together.

Hey everybody! For my next project, I've decided to tackle a Power Ranger. I'm still deciding which one I would like to do, but at the moment I'm leaning toward MMPR White or GekiRed. Anyway, to my question. The clay I'm looking at to get started on sculpting a helmet is Polytek's Poly Plasticene (http://www.polytek.com/cart/index.php?target=categories&category_id=339). Would this stuff do the trick, recommended by anyone? Or does anyone have any recommendations? Also, if I were to start off with a styrofoam head (is that a good way to go?) about how much would I need to order? I'm just looking for a rough estimate here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, so I am, in fact, making Tsuruhime (http://gallery.rangercentral.com/data/1018/kaku-pt-kakurangerninjaman.jpg)for Anime NebrasKon next week...

My boyfriend's been helping me (a little) with the gauntlets and ankle guards, but they're really complex and it's my first time making armor...

The kimono-style top and belt are done, and I'm working on the hakama and headband.

Technically, all I really need to finish is the hakama and scarf for it to be completed enough to wear, but I like the gauntlets. I just don't like making them... :P
