Hi All,

There seem to be alot of treads floating around about loli but no one main disscussion point. I think there was a loli thread some time ago, but it must be burried.

What is loli: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_Lolita

How this thread works:

1) post about anything loli, or loli related. but please stay on topic.

2) to increase the ties in the loli comuinty please post one comment on somthing loli in the users above you gallery, and then link to the comment (you just posted in their gallery). If they don't have anything yet, then comment on the person above them.

3) this is a great place to ask questions about loli, or ask for help on your projects. please feel free to do so.

4)Feel free to link to your loli pics, esp. if there new.

Since no one is above me I'll comment at random:

Interesting! Alright, I'll pose a question. ^_^

I'm currently working on my first EGL ensemble, I'm using a Cheshire-Cat theme. Because the novel introducing Cheshy was published mid-1800s (1856?), I'm using very Victorian styles...a gathered, short-sleeved chemise in a nice soft grey (complete), underneath a black silk Victorian overbust corset with a lovely pink and purple lily design painted on the centre panel (awaiting delivery!). I have the perfect colours of pink and purple taffeta, and I need to do something with them to really capture the Cheshire theme -- how do you think I can use these fabrics? I'm fine with creating my own stripes with them, I've done some quilting. Some options would be to make an apron-y garment, or to make some sort of overskirt...but I'm drawing a blank as to what would work best.

Any ideas from you successful EGL costumers?

I have yet to decide on footwear and headwear to complete the outfit, but I have lots of ideas for those, and will work on it once I've got the rest figured out.

p.s. Dressdragn, this is lovely: http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=165436
(cleavage ahoy!) ;)

Cheers!

I think you could make striped bloomers, and either add poofy striped sleeves to the chemise, or make a long-sleeved dress that goes under the chemise. That might be too many layers, though.

Maybe you could try creating the stripes via ruffles and/or trim. I <3's the ruffles.

Lol, I recently did a victorain white rabit:

Anywho the orginal illustrations are avaible on the net. I think I lost the link, but if you google them they should turn up. The Cheshire Cat doesn't wear clothes but maybe you could find impration from some of the other images.

I think bloomers are a good idea, b/c they would alow you to show a fair bit of leg. Some how I feel like, if your skirt was to long it would take away from the catness of the outfit. I'd maybe make the bloomers longer then your skirt. I'd defintly have a tail in the back. The Cheshire's back legs are quite round so I might consider making the bloomers very full.

I'd love to see progress pics when you get started.

Today in class, one of my fellow classmates brought up an emerging photographer called Anna Gaskell. I had never heard of her or her work, but after looking at a book of hers called wonder (based on alice in woderland) I was very impressed. It's not directly GL fashion, but I think that it's worth looking at. I think this kind of photography would suit loli fashions very well. Anywho, here are said photos:

Eep. I'm so sorry guys. I should have read the first post closer 0.o; Here, I will post some comments to make up for it. ^_^

Thank you for the comments! Yay, now everybody has some comments.... This thread is reminding me how much I need to get started on my next lolita. I gotta question, actually. Do you guys think messy curls look okay with loli? Or should it just be the french curls? So far I've just done my regular hair, but I'm using a wig for my next one.

Tess, I can't tell you enough how much I love your pink and black lolita. It's so perfect! And wow, Anna, all your costumes are so creative. Osselle: I had another idea. How about doing sort of a cape or bustle type thing in the back that is all striped on one side and a solid liner on the other? Something like Queenypants has: http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=270551

I really like that idea! I keep leaning towards some sort of overskirt, with gathers (perhaps one at each side, or something?). The only problem is that I wouldn't want to be accused of thieverizing the lovely Dia's design. o_O

I think what I'd like to do is either an apron or an overskirt, if I go with the latter, I'd like to do a vertical gather on either side. This would also give me something to have Cat's tail peeking out, assuming I go that route...I am undecided on ears/tail. Cat is the inspiration for the outfit (though I'm using the more widely recognized Disney Cat colours of pink and purple on a black and grey base), but I do NOT want to be a catgirl. *shudder*

I appreciate the brainstorming so much, keep it coming!

Well, you could make it sort of like the tails on a tux. You could go several ways with this idea: either make a separate tail with fur or stuffed fabric and have it be able to attach to the top of a slit you have in the overskirt, or don't have the tail separate at all. You could make most of the panels have stripes going down the long way and then the center panel be tail-ish in shape and have the stripes go from left to right. You could do something similar to Chrno's coat, but do two panels in the back with points and two in the front. The two in the front would be thinner, and the four points would connect over your shoulders. Augh. I had something I was working on in photopaint, but the program died before I could save it. >.< Anyways, the points would be purple with horizontal stripes. The front stripes would be grey to contrast with the corset stripes, which would be vertical and purple. It would probably look best if you made a tail out of the same material and stuffed it.

I think because the ears are so small you can get away with not having ears at all if you get the right color and style of wig. You'd have to make two big curls (you know how the Grinch's hair does those curl things, right?), but you wouldn't necessarily need the ears. If you do have them, though, I think the colors and stripes will make you recognizable as the Chesire Cat instead of a random catgirl.

Yeah I wouldn't take Dia's design. She was very specific in cosplaylab about not stealing her design. Its becoming a more common design tho. Can always do your own interpretation. For AX last year I did a similar plaid punk wedding dress. with short skirt, long train and bustle train on top of that. Can be seen here.

It's not as loyal to the black rose idea as the original design, but since there's still gonna be roses in the accessories and jewelry, and I can't think of a better name to call it, I'm just gonna call it that, I guess. (and oh yes the white eyes weren't just me being lazy XD)

I definitely think messy curls would look fine. ^__^ I mean, I can see how it would look a tad inappropriate for certain types of Lolita [EGA, for example, is a tad too prim and proper for any messiness], but for what you have planned, I definitely think it would look adorable!

This is such a lovely hairstyle for you, Tia! I'm jealous that you can get your hair to curl so perfectly... I have a spiral perm at the moment, but when my hair was straight, I couldn't manage the slightest curl. ^^; I'm also looking forward to seeing your new Loli!

While wearing your reg hair can be ok (I usualy use my hair) some people use wig's to awsome effect. Instead of full wigs wich can be unmanageable falls, and clips are good altertives. My hair is finaly long enough to pull back so I think I might start using more hair pices.

I think that itll be a lovely design when done. I like the contrast of purple and black with all the roses.

A project I'm working on the for Acen EGL Fashion Show. Its going to be a formal Qi-loli. Using a gorgeous brocade that's unfortunately $20/yd. Had to tone down the design due to expenses. Later I'll do the full qi-loli I dream of XD~ Have a wa-loli in progress for the show as well but I hate the sketch so I'll post digicam pics later.

The images below. Going to raise the back of the collar a bit to add a little more flair. Otherwise my muslin is pretty much done. Disregard the wrinkleage around teh boobs. My dressform is broken all the way up to the shoulders. First time drafting a princess seam blouse as well so its a little odd.

I know what you mean about falls, Anna. I've been working on one to make my maid look better... just having issues with getting curls to stay in it. *grumbles* I probably should've gotten the extension hair online instead of the cheap stuff from the local shop, but I was hoping it'd match better. Unfortunately, my hair's faded more now so it doesn't really match as well as I'd hoped. Thinking about using my 10-day wash-out haircolor, and just letting it stay on for a few minutes to get a little bit more color. I probably just took the curlers out too soon. I'm so impatient sometimes. =/

Oh! I'm so glad you guys think it'll turn out well. I can't wait to get started on the wig styling. It was actually a wig I was thinking about using for Chrno (Jesus wig from Cosplay.com shop), but like all of the wigs it had difficulty dying and so I dyed it twice to try to get it darker. The result was this gorgeous purple-black color. I was thinking of making it into a Motoko Kusanagi wig, but I just became too attached to it. I'll probably style it next week, along with a few wigs I've been putting off because I haven't had enough time.

Tess - Aww, thank you ^_^ Unfortunately, no it isn't my real hair color. I always wished I was a redhead instead of a blonde. Lol, the curls looked good for that pic, but they kept falling throughout the day. My hairdresser did show me this incredibly high-strength hair spray, though, which you're supposed to have to wash out to get the style out of your hair. Also, do you spray the hair straight with hairspray first? and then again after you've curled it? Old secret I picked up from a really good hairdresser who put all my hair up into curls once.

Mel - That design is so wonderful! All the detailing with the ruffles. I love them so much. Really well put-together, too. From what I have heard, princess seams are pretty difficult to make. Stinks that you have to pare back because of money. =( Brocade will look really good worn, though. It'll be worth it. I'm leaning towards taffeta, myself. I just have to find white for the matching one I'm making for my friend. Doesn't seem to be any white taffeta at all. I'll probably ask Joann's if I can order some. Or maybe I'll try the really big Joann's first. They'd probably have more variety for the purple and pink anyways (my friend's has pink constrast replacing the purple).

I'm actually about to go work on something EGA for my boyfriend for the EGL tea party this weekend ^_^ I got silkessence really cheap because there was a sale. I'll try to work on the Cheshire Cat design again (but I'm not sure if it'll be as good as what I had before). I'll have something by next week, latest. Well, I'm off to work!

Thanks Tia! I haven't been putting much time into Cheshy, as the priority is my competition costume for Anime North, and I'm rather behind on it. I would really like to get Cheshy at least wearable for the same con, though. ^_^

Pink Bunnie - I love the Qi-Loli design, nice sleek lines, very fitted, it's going to look HOT when it's done! :bigtu:

No problem at all! I love doing designs for people... I always used to do that when I was younger, make up random designs. Man, I need a cosplay doll... or more commissions or something. The idea is slightly complex, though, so you might not be able to get it all done for the con if you're rushing. If you can find stripey fur, it might be best to use that for the tail. It'd be difficult to find, though, so you might have to use the same fabric you already have.

DressDragn: Thanx! My bf does my photography. He's a photo master's student at CalArts. He's going for fine arts but he's been trained in all areas. We're working on improving his fashion photography. Its a lot of fun :3 We'll just come up with an idea or just start driving. Either well-planned or random as hell.

Thank for all the postive feedback guys! Kind of slow to respond since I've been MIA. Hospital visit, doctor's appointments, ect. Have slowed me down. Turns out I have a stomach disorder called GERD. Anyhow I got some more work done despite it all. Have a couple links with pictures.

Skull Wa-loli progress. My muslin is coming along nicely. Few things I need to tweek on it. The skullxrose fabric is my main fabric, the eyelet is the ruffles, and the "skullfinity" is the obi fabric. Not sketch this time cuz it looks like ass.

So I finally made a lolita costume...but didn't have time to finish it for when I wore it (local anime/cosplay event) Well, a loli teaparty is coming up very soon and I want to finish it up. Aside from a petticoat, what do you think I should add? I want more ribbons!! XD I'm not really sure what happened, because I measure all the circles when I cut them out, but my bottom skirt layer came out waaaay crooked. O.O Well had to make it really fast so it's kinda screwed up >.< Like really long on one side and really short on the other. I have to try and fix that too.

Aw, thanks. Yeah, I really do need to get a mannequin. Just don't have more money to throw into cosplay 0.o;

Oh! I had an idea for your petticoat. If you haven't sold that casa sheer you had from Nanami yet, you could use that. I bought a bunch of various colors of it for the petticoats I'm gonna make. You might not have enough left to make a pleated petticoat, though. I think three layers would be right. You can make pony falls yourself by taking a strip of tulle or lace and taking extensions and looping them over it. Some places recommend you braid and then glue them, but I just tie them off with small elastics I bought in bulk at the extension place. Keep doing that until it's as long as you want, then attach a strip of elastic to the two ends. Have the not-so-nice-looking edge facing downwards when you put it over your bun and tie the elastic tightly. It should drape well enough to cover the ends, but if not you can always do it right-side-up and have giant ribbons around the tails. If you want even more ribbons, you can hang some from your parasol. I'm going to do that with beads on mine eventually. Probably won't have it until Otakon.

W00t. In other news, I bought out quite a bit of Joanns' casa collection. I think it's gonna work. I'm going to start working on that as soon as I finish Juri and make my corset so I'll post progress pics, I guess. I'm always bad with them, though.

I'm going to start making some con-destined costumes in the hopes I will actually ever go to one. Grr. I have living in a culture-less town.

Theme Lolis are great fun. ^__^ I fully intend to do an EGL Robin [Witch Hunter Robin] one day, as I dearly love her character. Poor thing only has one outfit in the entire series [well, two variations on the same outfit], so I figured I should concoct something to add to her wardrobe, hee.

My friend and I have been discussing the idea of creating Lolita versions of various anime characters. Of course, half the time this becomes amusing... Loli!Sesshoumaru always makes me smile.

i first found out about gothic lolita styles back in the spring last year, and fallen in love with it ever since,i prefer gothic lolita over the western type of gothic style that you see here. i used to not be a fan of the more conservative look that gothic lolita has, but it grew on me =) thought im not a fan of those flat headpieces wih lace that go on your head, am i the only one ?

anyways here's my comment , i couldn't find any gl stuff in oselle's(at least i dont think i did >_>; sorry if i missed it!) so heres a comment on tia's

W00t. In other news, I bought out quite a bit of Joanns' casa collection. I think it's gonna work. I'm going to start working on that as soon as I finish Juri and make my corset so I'll post progress pics, I guess. I'm always bad with them, though.

LOL I need a mannequin too! The only thing I want for my upcoming birthday is a freakin dressform T.T It's gonna be hell to make my senshi fuku without one! >.<

Casa sheer? You mean the chiffon I had in the classifieds? I decided to go ahead and use that for my CCS costume. It wouldn't work for a petticoat anyway; it has no poof. I bought a bunch of starched green tulle but just didn't have time to finish the petticoat. It's still sitting in my closet and will be used. ^.~

I don't have a parasol I can decorate though. T.T I might look for one and just sew some lace onto it. Hehe I love the casa collection too. ^^ I have crepe in like 5 different colors right now that I haven't even used yet! XD

Thanks Tia! I like it, it's definitely a little different from the typical lolita outfits you see. And the diamond pieces would definitely make it fun and flouncy. ^_^

Now lets hope I have enough of the fabric to deliver on at least part of the idea! *crosses fingers*

Yay, I'm glad you like it. You probably aren't going to be able to find fur in such a weird pattern, but if you could find a very low-nap fur in the two colors you could sew them together in strips like the other fabric. Otherwise, just use the regular fabric and stuff it.

What I was thinking was maybe it would work if it was starched. But the tulle will probably work better. Hmm. It might look nice to find a pink parasol and sew white lace onto it. Then you could hang pink and green ribbons down from it. What you could do is buy a cheap umbrella, strip the fabric off, use it for a template, and then make a cover out of your watermelon fabric.

*dies* I've commented on almost every pic of your lolita.... Erm... I guess I can comment on the shoes? http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=326639

[QUOTE=DayDreamerNessa]thought im not a fan of those flat headpieces wih lace that go on your head, am i the only one ?
[QUOTE] Not the only one, I dont like them either. They look really stupid on me :( Instead I've been wearing headbands with bows on them in the same colour as whatever I'm wearing. Due to my new haircut when I put the headband in my hair does this really nice layer-tier thing. I wish my camera would work...

If anyone has access to Goth Loli vol 4 (no scanner) would the blue sailor-collar dress (the one with photo instructions of how to make) look better with or without sleeves? I really like the design (with minor modifications) but long sleeves really arent too practical for Japanese summer.

Lovely costume Tia, you really wear it well. I love the look of the fabric.

I too have started a gothic lolita design of my own. I have it planned out and have a few pieces done, but I would really like some advice and comments on the design before I get too far into it. Thank you ^^

notes:
-The headpiece is not tied under the chin, because it gets itchy. Instead it's clipped in my hair with hairclips that are sewn in under the ends of the costume

-In actuality I have a long neck, and I'm terribly short and thin.. I have posted a couple of pictures of me to show what I look like to help out with what the completed costume would look like on me.

And now my question. For ACEN 2006 I'm planning on doing a black and purple or black and red version of the dress attached. My problem right now is my hair. Since my hair is pretty short I'm sure I'll need a wig, but what type would go best with it?

Tess
05-22-2005, 11:10 PM
Karoi :: I think that a sausage-curled wig that falls to about the shoulders would be adorable. Maybe in a brown-ish or strawberry blonde-ish colour. ^__^ That's such a beautiful design... What EGL designer is it from?

Is that the kind where the curls are vertical instead of horizontal? I found the dress on Bodyline, they recently updated their site with some very nice designs.

I wish bodyline were slightly more mainstream, cause they are by far the cheapest lolita brand available. Mainstream isn't the right word... neither is popular... dont know what is. Anyhow, I think some of their stuff is really nice, but to be taken seriously you've gotta be in more expensive dresses. But what they're charging is rediculous for sometimes little more than a rectangle of material with elastic in it.

Ignore above ramblings, please

Hey, everyone! I'm thinking about doing my first EGL pretty soon. I was just wandering through your average walmart, and thought, "Hey! Some of this fabric could be pretty useful for an EGL cosplayer!" So, I decided that maybe I could make my own. Anyone have any hints/tips I could use?

Can you be a little more specific? Kind of a vague question. I'll give some general tips from my authentic clothing. Bodices tend to have princess seams. Skirts tend to be full circle skirts. Box pleated skirts tend to be less full. Always use high quality lace and fabrics. Cluny and cotton eyelet lace tend to be used a lot. Of course tho you can always screw all that and do what you like. I tend to do that :P

I don't know if I could get more specific, because I only have a rough sketch of my idea. I will scan it tonight, and post a link. But it does involde a mid-thigh length, poofy skirt.

hello everyone! I've been reading through the thread and have found the information there really helpful. I'm attempting to put together my first G.L. costume, and I had what I think is a cool idea: I'm going to Disney world soon and know they have replica belle/cinderella/snowwhite dresses made for children (although I'm slim and would fit an extra large) my question is this: does the thought of a loli/goth/fetish cinderella or belle strike you as cool? I'm prepaired to alter and add to the dress but what would look good? bustle? lace trim? and shoes! I know I want a waist cincher in there for sure! Argh, the posibilities are endless. give me some of your thoughts!
Thanks so much!

I should have read the post before mine but does anyone have a pattern I could use to make a petticoat? I need one for my gothic lolita outfit that I might wear to work soon.

Tia
07-02-2005, 01:08 AM
You don't really need a pattern for a petticoat. Just decide how many layers you would like it to be (how fluffy). Four-five layers seems good for your average lolita. Then you get your fabric, figure out what length you need it to be. Most lolitas seem to work well with either cutting the fabric you buy down the bottom seam line and then folding it in half or just cutting an inch or two off the non-fold edges to attain the length you need. Remember to add about a half inch for seams. Then you measure out lengths of three times the circumference of your hips plus 1/2 to 1 inch. Just make sure each layer is the same, whatever number you decide on. Then, depending on what material you are using, either seam and zig-zag the edge, or double seam (seam once on the outside, then trim again and pull the edge through to the other side and seam again so the raw edge is encased in fabric.

Then take each layer and box pleat it, by making knife pleats that alternate in direction. Sew a running stitch line about 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the raw edge at the top to hold the pleats in place. Once you have all of the layers pleated and sewn down, take the layer you want to appear on the bottom and the next layer from the bottom and sew them together approximately where you sewed the pleats down. Keep adding layers until you have sewn them all on, one by one. Trim, add a waist band and elastic, and you're good to go.

I have a diffrent method (from the one posted above) I like to use for petti coats.

I like to start with a circle skirt base (this is littleraly a large cirlce, with a nother circle cut out of the middle where you waist goes).

For the circle skirt I usualy use a light lining frabric like 'china silk' (not realy silk, very cheep).

Then on top of that base I gatter and sew layers of tule or mesh. I often finish the lower layers of mesh with lace.

It can be alot of fun to play with the trasnparincey and color of the mesh and lace: http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=307973

That's a very nice design! I think striped stockings would look really nice with it. It reminds me of Meilin from Card Captor Sakura. You could maybe do monotone poofy, short bloomers with that, too, if you want. I also like the idea of having a train. You could either make it a separate piece with a pretty ribbon tie to secure it, or not use bloomers and have it attached to a skirt. I think a big, poofy tulle train would look nice.

Quite alot of the actual Lolita-brand skirts that you can buy are just a rectangle of material sewn into a tube and threaded with elastic at the top. Otherwise yes the rest of the skirts seem to be constructed out of 2 or 3 trapezoids with a waistband at the top.

Just thought I would ask here before I made a thread but...

I'm doing an original wa-loli for SugoiCon and my petticoat is two layers - the black layer is 20", right at knee length, and the white is 19". Both have a 1" ruffle. Would it be ... well, tacky, to make my skirt around 18" with a small ruffle so the ruffles of the petticoat will be visible? The skirt will be black so I thought the black-white-black would look neat XD

I'm not so sure about that. I personally don't like petticoats hanging out. From my study of the fashion your petticoat is always hidden. I think it really depends upon the material of the petticoat. If its netting I say you'd be better off sewing bxwxb ruffles in. If its something more fabric like (organza or something) Then I think it may look alright.

Also there was a question about skirts earlier. I've imported a lot of clothing and bought some off girls selling online.

The cheaper brands do the elastic waistband thing but of the two I have with elastic waistbands one is still trapezoidal and the other is pleated. They cheated by sewing the actual skirt to an elastisized rectangular yoke.

The higher end brands like h.Naoto, Baby the Stars Shine Bright, Metamorphose, ect mostly use interfaced waistbands. Sometimes the back 1/4 has elastic for extra room. Shape varies. Sometimes box pleated, sometimes circle or 3/4 circle (my fave), sometimes rectangular gathered, trapezoidal gathered. Generally they're all about 18 inches long. Seems to be the only consistant factor. You'll get a better shape if you use trapezoidal or circle cut in my experience.

*nod* The petticoat itself is a double layer of chiffon, if I remember correct. Black as the top layer, white as the second. But the manner in which is has small (about 1" wide) ruffles at the bottom makes me think it was somewhat meant to be shown off.
Still, thank you for the opinon! n_n

I have a petticoat like that. Its two layers attached to a waistband. The waistband is a rectangle with elastic through the top. The layers are then done by gathering to the waistband, then gathering to the hem of that ruffle, and so on. The hem on the first is ruffles gathered down the middle and sewn on. The hem on the second is bias tape or ribbon.

Kinda like this for the first petticoat hem ruffles. The dotted lines down the middle are where you gather and sew the ruffle down.

dose anyone have any advice on making bloomers. I need to make a pair for a PJ loli I'm working on. As far as I can tell there cut like very lose pants and then gathered at the waist and knee. Is there anything else to them? Tips or Tricks appricated.

That is pretty much it. Just make sure you make the portion before the two legs split big enough. I had to redo a pair of pants twice because that part wasn't long enough. Measure from the top where the shorts usually lay in the back to the top in the front. Then divide that by two and add 2 or 3 inches, depending on how baggy you want them. Take your hip measurement for the width, divide it by two, and add about three or four inches, maybe more if you want them poofier. This is if you want no seams on the sides, just in the center. Then you cut out two pieces, sew up as far as you need to on each piece, then pin them together and sew the two pieces together. Then put the waistband on and add elastics. I would either serge or double seam before you add elastics, though, as the seams will take a bit of stress from sitting and getting up.

I made my first EGL dress. It is an original outfit for Violet Baudelaire based on both her book and movie costumes. It's in my cosplaylab.com account. I sewed it by hand from scratch, but it still fits well and is comfortable.

Hi there! I am rather new around here, but I try to be helpful. I haven't really finished much, though...I tend to over-research things and never get started. =^_^=;;
I used this site to hep me make my pair of bloomers for Halloween last year:
http://home.aol.com/ilove2lace/bloomer.html
They turned out rather well, except that I was silly and cut out the fabric facing the wrong way so the print it upside down on one leg. Nobody noticed but me, though...
I actually used a comfy old pair of pajama bottoms that had a blow-out for the pattern base and non-roll elastic for the waistband. The self-fabric ruffle instructions on that site were very helpful.
Three tips:
1) Find some way of labelling the back of the bloomers. The back piece will be a little bigger (more room for your booty) and it's not always easy to tell back from front.
2) Stitch the seam down flat for a couple inches by where the elastic casing will be. That will make it much easier to slide the elastic through without catching on the fabric.
3) A bodkin is very handy for threading elastic. A large safety pin will sometimes do, but it will destroy some of the thick non-roll elastic. Besides, bodkin is a cool word. :)

Dressdragn, I put a comment in your Black & Blue EGL pic.
So many of you have done very nice work! I never heard of wa-loli before. I feel educated. It is a very beautiful style mixing traditional with modern. I like.
Tia, you are a purple-haired goddess (well, at least your avatar is...).
I love purple.

Oh! This is not exactly cosplay so it is not in my cosplay gallery here, but...
http://www.niceboots.com/~tenebrae/pics/Gorey/TeneGorey2003_2.jpg
I wish I could say I made everything in that pic, but it is sadly not the case. I only made the lace shawl and the matching lace trim on the top hat.

Hiyas! found this forum so yeah don't wanna waste topic space and whatnot. OK so I saw this video on Newgrounds "Lilium" (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/243164 to see the video) and I wanna make that outfit since it looks EGL-ish. I'm a beginner at sewing and to me EGL outfits look like a challenge so just wondering if anyone knows any help site for EGL outfits or at least parts of it (the bottom part of the skirt, EGLish top, armwarmers, etc.) Thanks in advance ^_^

Luannita12: I would suggest looking at some historical clothing patterns from around the 1800's. A lot of EGL clothing looks to me like modified Victorian era clothing. There are a lot of patterns out these days that you can get for stuff like this. I can't view that video from work...I checked it out at home yesterday and it was pretty cool. The skirt looked like layers of pixie points (sort of like my Teneko skirt in my gallery was, only longer). Arm warmers are just gloves or close-fitting sleeves that are cropped at the top and bottom. Wide non-roll elastic is great for the tops, or just use a stretchy knit fabric that fits closely.

empress_donna: In the UK, you have Pennangalan Dreams for your shoes/boots (www.pennangalan.co.uk). For clothing, I am not sure quite where to turn to, but a good starting point would be Black Rose (www.blackrose.co.uk). They have a store in London up in the Stables market in Camden Town. It's a short walk up from the underground station, and there are LOTS of very cool shops up that way. Some of the shopkeepers at Black Rose are a bit snooty, though. Their primary focus is on 80's style deathrock/Goth clothing, but you may be able to find some good pieces up that way.
I used to go shopping on Carnaby Street in Soho a lot, but that was a very long time ago and last time I went I was hard-pressed to even find the Underground Boot shop there. Blah.
If you want to look for stuff online, there are lots of products and pictures up at http://www.cosmates.jp/ - or just look through the pictures in the cosplay.com photo galleries. Search for EGL or lolita and see what other people are doing. If you like something you see, try PMing the person for more information on the piece.

<- doesn't know.

Tenebrae

There are LOTS of images online showing how to measure yourself. I found one here:
http://sewing.about.com/library/sewnews/library/aabasic0104.htm

I would suggest this, though.
Put on your most comfortable bra and underwear. Have a close friend help you measure:
1) Your bust right across the nipples at the largest point. Don't make it too loose to try and make yourself feel better...also, don't squish it down too far or your clothing won't fit right.
2) Your NATURAL waist. If you are not sure where your natural waist is, get a piece of string, yarn, or narrow elastic and tie it around your waist. Bend from side to side. The elastic will settle into the correct position for your natural waist. Measure that carefully. Again, do not scrunch it down too tight or you will not fit into the clothing you make or buy.
3) Your hips at their widest point. If you have a big butt, move the measuring tape down over your butt. If your hip bones stick out, move the measuring tape over them. If you have mutant thighs like I do, you may want to even move the measuring tape down that far to ensure that your garment will fit over your hips. If you are buying/making a circle skirt, the most important measurement is your waist so make sure that is right - the hips will not really come into play with a full skirt like most lolifashions have.

Another measurement I think is REALLY important but very much overlooked is the measurement from your waist to the bottom of your butt! When I was making some short skirts, I had to have somebody help me get that measurement. I wanted to make sure that I did not give people a free show whenever I bent over in my skirt. ;)
To get that measurement, I had somebody hold the top of the measuring tape at the natural waist off to the left or right of center. I bent over wearing a pair of underwear and had the person measure from the natural waist over the curve of my backside to the bottom of where I would like the skirt to hang - about an inch or two past my undies.
If you are going to be wearing cute bloomers, then this measurement may not be quite as important.

I hope this helps!

Tenebrae

Very lightweight cotton gauze for the skirt and sleeves...and a heavier cotton broadcloth for the body. If you cannot get it in an unbleached natural colour, try a tea-staining method to make it a bit yellower.
I was going to suggest linen for the skirt, but you can't really find linen in that weight very easily (or affordably). Cotton will work just as well and be easier and cheaper to find.
The ribbons look like they could be silk - they are very shiny and soft-looking.
Look for antique-style bridal lace for the accents on the shoulders and sleeves.
It looks like the speckled part in front is a separate waist cincher with what almost appears to be "Camp" style fan lacing up the sides. Check this site out for more information on fan lacing and the Camp corset:
http://www.corsetiere.net/Spirella/Camp.htm
It's not quite the same on closer inspection, but the broad coverage of the laces reminded me of it.
You would want to use a heavy cotton twill or coutil for the cincher. Twill and coutil have a different type of weave to them that make them stronger.

I love her outfits. Pity I can't get into her music. =/ Personally, it looks like silk or some kind of silky material to me. There is this fabric in the casa collection at Joann's that is it dead on. Just two problems: it's very difficult to custom dye and it will be extremely expensive. But it's dead on the right material. I can't remember what it's called. It's the sheer stuff in that section that isn't organza. It drapes very nicely as well. There is a dye you can use for synthetics, I just don't have time to search for it at the moment. I think it's dharma trading that sells it....

I have a question...

Once I get a job and have enough money for material I'm going to make an ankle length or floor length Gothic Lolita dress. My questions is about the petticoat: Would a knee-length one be ok or should I make/get a ankle lengthed one?

Tia
09-28-2005, 12:12 AM
If your petticoat is a good amount shorter than the skirt, it ends up making it look like a giant bell. =/ For some things, I suppose this is desirable. I don't know if it would work for goth loli.

Raid thrift stores for full length petticoats. Salvation Army, Goodwill, independently owned vintage stores all get petticoats. You can normally find them in the formal wear/wedding sections. I've gotten many a petticoat at those places. They're pretty cheap generally too. It'd probably cost as much to make one.

I have a question about petticoats, too. For my Halloween costume, I'm going to make an EGL-inspired dress/outfit (not sure which, leaning towards outfit), but I've never made anything to be worn with a petticoat.... how should I go about making the skirt-part? I mean, I'm making the pattern myself (because I can't find any that are right at my Jo-Ann's >.>;; ), so how big should I make it, or does it just depend on how fluffy I want it to be? Does it also need to be bigger in the waist?

Thanks for any help you guys can give >.<;;;

If you're making your own pattern I suggest measuring the length of the petticoat then make the dress/skirt that long, if not an inch longer (in case something goes wrong when you're sewing it). About the waist, it depends on the petticoat. Most petticoats aren't really that thick at the waist so it shouldn't make much difference. :jjacks:

I hope I was able to help.. If not I'm sure others can clear it up ^^;;

Tia
10-02-2005, 04:42 PM
It's easiest to make the petticoat first, and then start with your basic dress pattern a good amount longer than you think you'll need, and with make it flare out from the waist at about a 30-40 degree angle, to give the extra width needed at the bottom. For most people, it will work to just follow the angle you get from the change between your waist and hip. Sew it together and put it on over the petticoat, then cut it so that it's about an inch or an inch and a half longer, depending on how wide you like your seams.

Hiya! I just found this thread today and I hope it's ok I post my uber long post here, but I have to warn you guys all first that I'm a real newbie when it comes to sewing in general and I've never done anything Loli before, however, the style has been on my idea for a long time, especially since I've gotten a few recommendations that I have a nice body type for Loli styles clothing. Um, anyway, so if I get something wrong, please try to be understanding and patient with me. ^_^'

Ok, now, I want to work on my first Loli costume, but it's not for any particular con or anything ( I have a rule where I can work on only one costume per con or else I freak out and never end up finishing anything at all ) so even though I do hope to wear this outfit AT a con, it's not anything dire if I don't finish it by a set date. Also, another reason I was thinking of finally getting to work on it is because Halloween is coming up soon and I thought that might be useful when it comes to getting the right fabrics and such. Yeah..don't know if it really makes much of a difference or not though. >.<''

Ok, now like I said, I'm really knew to this and while I have skim read a few posts, I'm still unsure, so sorry if I sound stupid in asking, but is it possible to make Loli themed outfits related to animals? Like..I absolutely LOVE wolves with a passion, and I was just curious if there was any way to, like..thread that into my costume in anyway?

Also, I hope ya'll don't think I sound lazy when I ask this, because I'm really not, but I was wondering what people would suggest as an easy design to start off with? Wait, I know that every Loli outfit is different, I was just thinking in terms of generic...or if anyone would basically want to help with this costume in general. I really am clueless as to where I'm starting, so any and all help would be muchly appreciated. I hope I don't sound like a lazy, uninformed nOOb, I was just hoping that someone could help me along. I'm a hard worker, so also, if someone had a design they were just dieing for someone to do and it doesn't look absolutely impossible, I might attempt to create that. I hope I don't sound to clueless. Thanks for your time. ^_^

I have seen a lot of cute animal-related lolita styles. Most of them were with pandas or bears, though. Wolves might be a bit difficult to incorporate. You could try going with like a tattered lolita style and then have wolf ears and a tail maybe? I think lots of layers of really light gauzey materials with a lot of tattering might be really cute.

There's grey wolf faux fur available in a lot of the fabric stores right now...you could incorporate that into your outfit, like at the wrist cuffs and ankles or at the neck - places where you might have lace or ruffles.
You could also look for wolf-print fabric and make bloomers or contrasting triangular panels to insert into your skirt. Seems like I saw some fabric just the other day with wolves on it at Wal-Mart (but it might have been fleece).
I have a lot of ideas floating around in my head for using up some of the cool fabric I've found at quilting stores before - I have some smiley face print fabric and some Day of the Dead skeleton print fabric. Ended up making bloomers out of the skeletons, and I REALLY want to start making corsets so I can make contrasting panel corsets with them (plain black panels + print panels).
Cute wolfie ears and tail would be fine, too. I am imagining something like Zakuro Fujiwara from Tokyo Mew Mew there. Oh, and there's a tutorial at http://www.fox-dream.com/ under Cosplay to help with the ears and tail.

I think it'd work fine.
You COULD do what a lot of the Goth types do and add pony falls into your hair. They are super easy and cheap to make and can be inserted into even very short hair. If it's long enough to get a nub into a pony tail, it's long enough to attach them. Pony falls are fake hair pigtails and look super cute with ribbons and fluffy maribou in them. I made some REALLY long ones for my daughter in black, brown, and pink one year and they only cost a few dollars to make. 3 bags of jumbo braid, a couple pony tail elastic holders, some hot pink maribou, and lots of ribbons. She was the cutest perkigoth!

makonurikoryoko: That is an adorable design! I think the lolita-style minihat is better than the big one, though. Maybe you could use the same orange print fabric for the pocket flaps in front? JoAnns has some black spiderweb lace right now with iridescent bats or spiders on it. I picked some up with iridescent purple bats. That would be great for something like this.

I want to do Halloween as a lolita-pirate, so I designed one to the best of my meager abilities (and meager budget)

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a239/ilumiari/idr.jpg

I finished most of it last weekend, its about 50% hand sewen, 50% machine, cause my host family's sewing machine broke. I don't like the photo below, but havent had time to take a decent photo of me wearing it. I love the blouse, it looks so horrid in this photo *sniff*. I must get better photos at halloween. I'm not going to wear a hat like the sketch above, rather my Pirates of the Caribbean bandana that I got at disneyland.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a239/ilumiari/idr2.jpg

Lastly is a sketch done by my friend, Kei that I just have to show everyone! I screwed up the scanning, but you get the general idea.

weeeee! So many lolis! Ha! lol..anywho. I've been thinking that I want to do a loli design for halloween. Should I go with Sweet loli or an elegant loli? My ideas for the coustume would be either just a normal outfit, a Cat/ kitten theme or a pirate theme or even a witch theme. I'm kinda stuck so I hoped someone would give me any ideas. Furthermore I'm not that good at drawing, so I'm struggling to make up some sketches to show you guys my ideas.^.^;

Pirate Queen: Oddly I rarely ever see kitty lolis in the Japanese name brand stuff. Its always bears or bunnies. Wonder why? I'd say go with a theme otherwise you'll have to do a lot of explaining come Halloween. If you use a theme you can just say "I'm a pirate" rather than a lengthy description of lolita fashion.

I'm having trouble searching the forums for information on wa-loli outfits. I guess it doesn't like the hyphen...

Mostly I'm just looking for images for inspiration. I know I've seen a few before, but a search on google with the term didn't really work. I keep getting normal lolitas or Japanese lolitas (as in, girls from Japan, not Japanese style).

Anyone know of sites with wa-loli clothing? I checked out some of the links above, but didn't see what I was after (only 2 images, from bodyline).

I knew there was a thread somewhere asking for a pic of a black with white butterflies waloli outfit, and I did try to search some forums without the hypen, but it always said "search term not found". I'm usually quite good about searching first. Grar. My compy must be having glitches lately. XD

I had seen the thread piratekitty started when I was searching, but wasn't quite what I was looking for.

*cough* *cough*
I went to the BtSSB store in Shinjuku about 3 weeks ago, and fell completely in love with the whole Alice and the Pirates collection. At the moment I'm saving every spare yen I have, so maybe I will have the $400 or so that the GORGEOUS bodice-one piece costs in a couple of months. I tried on the skirt that you mention, and actually took measurements in the change room. I couldn't get the right material, and don't want to fork out money for the trim, but apart from that it's a pretty accurate replica. I love the cut of the over skirt.

If I haven't saved the money by the time I return home, I'm definetely making the onepiece as well.

Not an expert...I could be way off...
But I'm pretty sure Mana is the Gothfather of EGA.
I designed this for a guy:
http://www.niceboots.com/~tenebrae/misc/egl01_web.jpg
...I think it has an Elegant Gothic Aristocrat sort of thing going on.
I get the impression that EGA is more mature and Victorian-inspired. Skirts are longer; it's a little less frivolous and cutesy - not that there's anything wrong with that (loves just about anything black or purple with lots of lace).

Mistress Mel, your designs are very nice! That last project looks to be very well put-together. Some sweet lolita will be lucky to own that.

I have a question for anyone who cares to answer...
What is the most common skirt shape/style in Gothic Lolita fashion? Are elastic waistbands fine, or is it preferred that they are gathered to a waistband?
The short skirts always seem quite full with a petticoat under them. Are they usually a circle skirt, gored A-line, or other? I'm sure I already saw this discussed...
Ah, here it is.
I found earlier where Ilumiari and Pink Bunnie were discussing skirt shapes. When I made the A-line purple and silver skirts for my Teneko outfit, the pattern pieces I used were just two folded trapezoids sewn up the sides with elastic casing at the waist. They didn't turn out very full (which is what I wanted for the outfit). They were probably closer to a parallelogram shape now that I think of it.. Do you have any suggestions for making them fuller, but still in keeping with true EGL fashion? When you say that the skirts are sometimes made up of trapezoids, do you mean sort of like the late Victorian 4 to 6 gored skirts (only shorter)?
I saw mentioned that some of the skirts are just tubes with an elastic waistband. I made a skirt like that SO many years ago for a quick and dirty costume once. I used a lot of fabric in it, but it was still not terribly full. I couldn't imagine fitting a poofy petticoat under it.
I know I can just say to heck with how things "should" be done and just do whatever works and looks good, and I might still do just that. I just wanted some input on the way most people are doing things, especially where the fashion originated as I kind of have a background in things like "historically correct" clothing.
Personally, I am a big fan of elastic waistband circle skirts because they are so easy to make and can be nice and full. Also, my weight has been changing a lot lately so elastic is much more practical and comfortable. I've been thinking about making a gored full circle skirt with an elastic waistband and contrasting panels (black/patterned) for a while, though...I'm kinda afraid it'll end up looking more square dance or bellydance than EGL. heh

The higher end brands mostly use interfaced waistbands. Some put a bit of elastic in the back for extra fit. example: http://www.angelicpretty.com/shopping/sk/52s-1104.html The last image where the scallops stop there elasticc there. Lower end brands generally use elastic waistbands. There are exceptions like h.Naoto often uses elastic waistbands and Baby or Meta sometimes will.

Generally the skirts are gathered or pleated. They don't usually have gores just a front and back. Metamorphose often uses circle cut skirts. The simpler the skirt the less poof they tend to have. For more of a casual look. I just measured the hem os my name brand skirts and they're around the 75-85 inch range.

If you're having problems getting the fullness you want maybe you should try gathering a 2 half circles thats twice the waist measurement? So you get the hem of a full circle but with the gathers?

As for elastic waistband what you do is start with a rectangle half the width you want the waist to be. You don't want a trapezoidal shape. The sides of your skirt will hang down longer than the rest. So what you do is set your ruler on the upper corner as a pivot point. Measuring out the length of your skirt start pivoting the ruler so you get an upwards curve. Do that on each side to add width to the hem.

I'm not a big fan of elastic waistband skirts. I think the drape is slightly off on them and you have to start with a very wide waist to acheive proper fullness. Unless you cheat like Putumayo and use the elastic part as a yoke and then add fullness to the skirt. example: http://www.putumayo-home.com/t200.htm They're useful for selling one of kind items since they fit a broader range tho.

Tenebrae
10-25-2005, 08:20 AM
Ooh...pretty Swan Lake skirt! Thanks - that does help. I was trying to figure out how you'd combine an interfaced waistband with elastic. That illustrates it well enough.
Are the seams in a skirt like that usually one in the back, or two on the sides?

Light green and white definitely sounds more of an ama loli (sweet Lolita) then Gothic Lolita. Be sure to show your costume when it's done!

I've been meaning to ask you guys something. Despite me being too un-cute for Lolita (horrors!), I am going to go a Gothic Lolita dress soon, but am stuck on the arms. Basically, I am making a jumper skirt (i.e pinafore) but I don't want to leave my arms uncovered, due to an uneven tan for spending too much time in the tropical sun. >_< A tanned Loli isn't exactly ideal, ne? So far, what I have been meaning to do is something like this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v347/Heretic_renegade666/GLdesign.jpg), but will the arm-warmer-thingies destroy the GL look? Alternately, I can do a long-sleeved capelet of sorts, but I want to leave the neckline uncovered to accentuate the cross. Any inputs will be great!

Just in case the link doesn't work

Crucifixation, that looks cute to me.
Personally, I (almost) never wear something sleeveless due to having 35-year-old arm wings developing in spite of rigorous twice daily tricep toning exercises....
I think it's fine like that. You could also grommet it and lace it onto the sleeves. Actually, I'm wearing a shirt I made right now with bell fishnet sleeves that lace on with ribbons and grommets set into bias tape. They used to lace sleeves on in Elizabethan times, and I've noticed a few lolita fashions with removable sleeves, too...so why not?

There's a department store chain out where I live called Kohl's. They had a big 50% off sale yesterday in anticipation of Xmas, I guess, so I decided to get some early holiday shopping. I went there looking for a cashmere hoodie for my daughter and ended up with a half dozen or so pair of socks. I tell you, I am a total sock slut. I about died when I found http://www.sock-dreams.com and ended up buying a bunch of stuff from there.
What does this have to do with Gothic Lolita type stuff?
Well, I'm glad you asked...
Kohl's seems to have a large selection of very cute knee-high socks and stockings.
Check out my haul:
http://www.niceboots.com/~tenebrae/misc/socks.jpg
They didn't really come out all that well, but these are all knee-highs.
The pair on the left are black lace. The ones next to them are black knee-high stockings with burgundy lace trim with a black ribbon bow going through them - very cute GL type stockings! They also had them with green lace trim, but I'm not a big fan of green. The two pairs of socks in the middle are just black knee-high socks. One of them has a black pleather flower sewn onto the sides and the other is just a plain pair of cable knit black knee-high socks. They would look really cute with a schoolgirl uniform - kinda Kare Kano-ish. The black pair second from the right are socks with a black ruffle at the top. The ruffle's a little more substantial than lace, but are still cute. And on the far right...I just had to get those. Black knee-highs with pink trim and a pattern on it consisting of a skull and crossbones with a pink bow (!) on top of a pink flower! I have no idea what I'd wear them with, but they were just too funny to pass up. heh
Anyways...just thought I'd share. I'm so happy with my new socks!

Oh, and in keeping with one of the original purposes of the thread (to strengthen the community and post comments in each others' galleries for the previous poster...

Hahaha, I love those socks on the far right, Tenebrae, I have a pair just like them!!!

Harajuku is THE best place in the universe to buy socks. The fairly short, yet wide, "main street" (takeshita dori) has around 10 sock shops, each better than the last! I have bought socks of every shape, design, colour imaginable! At the moment my personal favorites are a white pair that go just below my knee and are covered with black musical symbols. I've had randoms in the street come up to me and comment on how cool they are!

That reminds me... I have been taking my sweet time, but I finally have a design for my caterpillar ega on computer. Any comments? I also can't decide if I should use casa satin or velvet for the solid colored parts.

The corset is going to be a butterfly print fleece, and the not-pictured bustle in the back is a beautiful dark blue allova suede with a paisley silver dot pattern I picked up at Joann's the other day. And I know that caterpillars are supposed to be furry, so I am leaning towards velvet. But I am afraid it will make it impossible for me to wear it outside due to the heat in florida. =(

Anyways, here is the design: http://helios.acomp.usf.edu/~jburdsal/caterpillarhead.jpg

I have to change the chest portion to the dark shade, though, because the fleece I bought for the corset is predominantly light blue. But please, let me know if you think there is any way I could improve this. Thanks a ton, everybody. <3

That's really nice! I was wondering how you were going to manage a caterpillar EGA design...
I think it would be fine to use the casa satin. It'll add a contrast to some of the fuzzier fleece and suede part. Caterpillars aren't all fuzzy. Some just have a few tufts of hairs here and there. Monarch butterfly larvae don't have any hairs.
There's a lot of leeway in what materials you can use for them.
I think something with a matte texture like peachskin would be perfect, though.

Hi! I was wondering what to quickest way to make this outfit would be. It's nothing much, and tell me if there is anything else I should add to make it more EGL-ish. ^^

My plan is to get a black dress and cut it to size. Then get white h=fabric and lace for the detail. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-11/1109211/yukikukuruEGL.JPG

That's a cute design :bigtu: Your idea would be the fastest way to make it. If you can, try to find a suitable dress at a thrift store or second-hand store, things are much cheaper there. As far as add-ons, I would suggest some type of head/hair piece, like a mini-crown or a head dress. There's a lot of different things one can use, just look around and find what suits you best. (If you want, I can provide a place with A TON of reference pictures) Another thing in the way of accessories would be a matching bag/purse. Hope this helps, and good luck^^

I hope I'm not re-hashing something that's already been answered, but my searches came up with zilch.

Might anyone know a reliable online vendor that regularly sells gantai a.k.a Japanese medical eyepatches like this? (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y145/peachii123/pinkurori/Scan10002.jpg) I'm aware that JBox (http://jbox.com) had some in stock recently, but just my luck they're sold out.

Are you doing some Mitsukazu Mihara cosplay? Yay!

They don't look like they'd be too hard to make - some gauze, cording, and a band-aid. I can appreciate wanting to go to the source and get something accurate, though. I tried googling it up and all I found were lots of Jubei-chan sites, some discussion of Dr. Eyepatch in Super Milk-Chan, and a review of the movie Gonin. (Hey, sounds like an interesting movie, actually.)
I DID find a US website that sells a large variety of eyepatches...but none of them really fit the bill. Everybody seems to want to do the curved black pirate patches. They had a really cool perforated metal eyepatch, though!

It's not so much wanting a genuine Japanese one as it is pain ol' laziness. ^_^; I'm going to see if the Japanese grocery here in town might happen to have some, and failing that I'll take a bash at making my own. On the brightside, it's an excuse to try Wonderflex. :D

I guess as this is the Anything Loli thread I'll tell my tale of buying a dress yesterday.

From the moment I saw a picture of the one-piece from BSSB's (Baby the Stars Shine Bright's) Alice and the Pirates collection I fell in love with it, and resolved to save hard so that I could buy it before I left Japan early January. So yesterday morning I counted out the exact amount the dress was, and on the way home from Comiket I stopped by OIOI Young in Shinjuku with the express purpose of buying the dress. The BSSB store is on the 8th story, just infront of the escalator. I went in straight away, found the dress and asked to try it on. The lady at the counter looked at me a moment, then said that there was already someone in the fitting room, and I would have to wait. So I went over to have a look at some of the accessories for a while. When I looked up the girl in the fitting room had gotten out, and another girl was going in. This girl hadn't been in the shop when I went in, so I felt a little upset that she should go into the fitting room when I had been the one waiting. After what seemed like an hour (probably 10 mins or so), she came out, giggled and said she didn't want to buy the dress. I cought the shopkeepers attention, and she gave an "oh, you" stare, and passed me the dress to try on. Normally when you try on Lolita dresses you need to try them on with petticoats, provided by the store. I was waiting for her to pass me one, but she just stared at me with a bored expression. So I tried the dress on, but couldn't do the back zip up myself. I left the fitting room and asked her to do it, but she told me to wait because she was re-arranging the racks. I think that she thought that because I was a foreigner I was only trying the dress on for a joke.
Eventually even though the dress fit perfectly I didn't buy it, because the sales lady was really rude in my opinion. I ended up browsing around in the KERA Angel store next door, and found a few dresses that I really liked. The sales lady here was alot nicer, and was really helpful. I ended up buying a Gothic Lolita dress by MAM from there for a bit less than what I would have spent at BSSB. I also got a few pairs of socks. The lady at the counter even threw in a pair of earrings for free because she enjoyed the conversation we had so much. While walking out of OIOI I made a big point of walking past the BSSB shop carrying my KERA Angel bag.

Tomorrow I'm going to wear my dress when I go to Meiji Shrine for New Years Celebrations, if I get any photos I'll post them.

I know many Craftsmanship Competitions do not allow original costumes (or the like) or have a separate competition just for Lolita. This year my department will be having a sub-category under Craftsmanship specifically for Street Fashion (e.g. Lolita, Kawaii, FRUiTS, Decora, Kogals/Yankee, Ganguro, Yamanba, etc.). I'm sure most will be some form of Lolita competing, but it's open to all forms of street fashion (as well as other styles such as visual kei, etc.).

I am looking for people who are into street fashion and related fashion to give feedback. In such a competition, how would one expect to be judged? What do you feel Street Fashion should be judged on? What kind of reference documentation do you feel would be useful for the judges? Remember, this is a Craftsmanship based competition...so it's not based on cute factor alone.

In our "regular" Craftsmanship competition, we judge in three areas...

Technical 0–1–2–3–4–5
If no reference documentation is provided, receives 0 points.
Fits participant correctly; accurately resembles source (references provided) including wig/hair, makeup, props, and shoes (if visible); even seams that lay flat; hemmed and not left with raw edge; suitable fabric and materials choice to achieve desired effect; no loose threads;

Artistry 1–2–3–4–5
Finished edges rather than left raw; attention to detail; drafted pattern or draped rather than modifying a pattern or using a pattern with no modifications; garment quality; handwork (e.g. embroidery, beading); unusual properties (e.g. floating, glowing, transforming parts) simulated; high quality wig (if used);

Personal Opinion 1–2–3–4–5
Personal opinion of judge.

How do you think Technical and Artistry should be altered to reflect Street Fashion? What would you include as judging criteria for each?

Finally, when selecting judges, what do you feel are REQUIREMENTS for Street Fashion judges...and then what do you think would be helpful having?

I really appreciate any feedback we receive. Our department is always striving to provide the best competitions we can and are always seeking to improve.

This is lolita-specific, but for "reference documentation" I would suggest the following site : http://www.morbidoutlook.com/fashion/articles/2002_07_gothiclolita.html

I am afraid I can not help with the other fashion styles.

As for requirements for the judges, ideally they would have personally spent some time in Harajuku, I believe that is by far the best way to gain any understanding of the J-street fashions.

I think the artistry requirements are suitable as you have written them.

Oh, I apologize. I am VERY familiar with Street Fashion. I'm not asking to look for reference documentation to keep on hand, rather, I am asking what kind of reference documentation do you feel that competitors should bring if they are competiting an original costume (e.g. Street Fashion).

As for requirements for the judges, ideally they would have personally spent some time in Harajuku, I believe that is by far the best way to gain any understanding of the J-street fashions.

Although that would be nice if people have spent time in Japan to observe Street Fashion in it's native environment. There is a difference between the districts I have found...yes, I realize Harajuku is mostly seen as THE district, but why not also ask people who have been to Shibuya, Ginza, Omotesando, and Daikanyama. All are slightly different Tokyo SF from what I've heard from my galpals in Japan. Also, if going by JFA, these are the places they check out. But back to your comment, I think it would be a "This would be good to have" rather than "You must have" kind of judge requirement.

I think the artistry requirements are suitable as you have written them.

I believe it's a good start, but with original costumes, I believe that there still may be additional judging suggestions. I guess one that I should have added would be something to the effect of...is it separates or one-piece...separates to me are great because it shows diversity (and that outfit can be used to make several...so it shows thoughts to the future...it's not any more wearable...but I've found...if you're going to spend that much money...then might as well make your wardrobe extendable).

What kind of questions would you ask a participant as a judge? (I have a huge list already, but it seems people always come up with good, new questions.)

Thanks so much for your reply!

@evilchii: The White Rabbit drawing doesn't look lolita-ish, but the finished product could pass as lolita. My one qualm is with the lace (sorry, Australian lolitas are elitist and I've been brainwashed), the lace shouldn't be nylon or polyester (I think you used nylon, couldn't really tell though). The Queen of Hearts is gorgeous, but it doesnt convey the sense of innocence that is normally associated with lolita dresses. I'd classify it as Babydoll. The crown is also too big in comparison with the wig for lolita (sigh *I'm sorry, stupid elistist lolis have got to me*), but it is fine for Babydoll. On second thoughts the White rabbit would also pass for Babydoll before lolita.

Please ignore my rambling, just cause the elitist Australians would not think of the two as perfect examples of lolita doesn't mean that they arent both really awesome dresses. If you were going to enter them into a competition I'd recommend you enter them as Babydoll dresses.

Thank you guys so much for your input!! While I don't think of my designs being perfect examples of lolita at all, I'm hoping they're a step in the right direction.

I did get most of my inspiration from the gothic lolita bibles and Mihara Mitsukaz (who did the covers of the bibles 1-8). I like how the bibles cover all the spectrums of lolita and more. It leaves room for interpretation and imagination while still having a basic set of rules to follow but gives you the sense that you can still stylize it to be a personal look. I know bible #17 gives a small break down of different styles and classifications, I'll make scans of it soon!

evil_neko
02-12-2006, 04:58 PM
evilchii: That's be cool if you could scan that, I'd be interested in seeing it.

Temperance: Cute so far, but it could use some more detail. Maybe some rows of black lace on skirt. I can't tell if the white part has rows of lace on it or not, but if it doesn't, maybe you could lace it like a corset with black ribbon?

Temperance
02-12-2006, 10:57 PM
It does have lace, however white on white doesn't show very well... I have been considering adding ribbon along the front as you suggest... for some odd reason Black ribbon seems impossible to find as of late. Hmmm ¬_¬
Maybe a large floppy bow at the back? or would that be too tacky?

evil_neko

It might be a bit tacky. However, if you interfaced it and made it a stiff bow, it might look better.

Hmmm... might have to work it a bit more... I don't know if I can be putting wire in it. I will be sitting a lot that day... and I'd rather it not be straight backed and stiff.

Hello all, I'm new to the whole Lolita scene.

I'm currently working on my first loli dress (comes in two parts). The top is a black corset (minus the boning, since I'm cheap), the front panel is white, with lacing across the front that stops halfway down, and three black buckles and straps across the bottom front, a side zipper, white lace trim along the bottom hem, black lace trim across the top, white lace with black ribbon through it as the straps that cross in the back.
The skirt is a black circle skirt, knee legth, three layers, each layer hem has white lace trim around it and elastic waistband.

The problem I'm having is with the petticoat. I was following a pattern I found and it said to make two layers of crinoline fabric the same way I made the circle skirt, except it's not as fluffy and poofy as I want. I even added another layer of netting just in case and it's still not enough.
So my question is this: typically, how many layers should cut it if I wanted my skirt to be as poofy as this one (bottom left corner picture): http://www.blue-period.fsnet.co.uk/graphics/glbible4/012.jpg
And how does one gather the layers? Should I baste stitch and pull the strings together? In that case, should I make the waist edge of the layer much larger than my actual waist line so when I gather/pleat it, it fits more snugly?

I'm sorry if my thoughts/questions seem like a jumble of words. If anything need explanation, let me know.

Traeonna

Are you using crinoline (originally with a weft of horse-hair and a warp of cotton or linen thread, but now-a-days we have just plain ol' cotton crinoline as well) or tulle or nylon netting...or a combination of all? Depending on the fabric you are using and the technique will make a difference in fullness.

Many people use several flounces/ruffles on the under layer using tulle (because it's relatively inexpensive), then have a petticoat over that to make everything smooth (and sometimes a lining underneath the tulle so it's not itchy). Some do layers like a romantic style tutu, but this doesn't give you as much poof as the flounces/ruffles do. Then there are some who just layer on the petticoats, but honestly, it's heavy and not as fluffy when you're dealing with short pettis. A popular way is to have several layers with a flounce at the bottom to extend it out. Petticoats can range from 20 to 80 yards of fabric (depending on fabric used and how many layers). I've seen this gorgeous 4 layered petticoat that was made of 80 yards of organdy with 3" ruffles on bottom. It was super poofy! If you use multiple tiers, that does help as well. My advise is to look at lots of different types of petticoats to see what shape and poof you like...you can usually tell how it's constructed if it's a good photo. I like the layered and flounce ones and the tiered and layered ones best...because they're the most poofy.

Traeonna
02-16-2006, 02:42 PM
How to gather layers...well, some people do the baste and pull thing. If you do it this way, I suggest using two rows because if you use one...it'll twist everywhere. I usually sew in between the basting and then pull the basting out once attached.

Depending on if you're doing tiers of flounces/ruffles on one layer or layers with flounces/ruffles on multiple layers will often make a difference in shape.

I had one petti that had three layers of flounces/ruffles at the bottom of the innermost layer (tulle was used), then the middle layer had two tiers of flounces/ruffles (again, tulle), and the top layer had one flounce/ruffle at the bottom (made of lightweight material). The heft of the poof was at the bottom and gently sloped up to waist that way you don't have this huge poof around hips and waist. I'm so sorry if this doesn't make sense...it's easier to show than to tell.

Kuko-chan >>> Personally, for the amount of fabric used to make a petticoat, I decided to just buy mine off ebay. It was originally only three layers, but made of this super-duper fabric which I believe is a standard material for square-dancing petticoats. I actually had to cut off one of the layers to make it less puffy, even though it's still super puffy. I know that you've already started your petticoat, but in the future (and this goes for any other gothic lolita-ers as well) it's probably more economical to just buy one.

If you want your petticoat to be that poofy, and since it sounds like you're using tulle, I would suggest five or so more layers. Sounds like a lot, but when I tried sewing a petticoat into my skirt before I gave up and turned to ebay, I was using tulle, and even with three layers, the fabric was barely puffy. Hope that helps!

ilumiari
02-16-2006, 08:47 PM
I bought my petticoat too (one designed for use with a lolita dress) but it only has two layers of tulle. Even with only 2 layers (and a lining) it achieves the amount of poof that is in the photos above. Its basically made of a rectangle of lining, then a rectangle of tulle the same width as the lining, and a rectangle of tulle half the width of the lining. Instead of the tulle being gathered it is folded into knife pleats each about 8mm wide. This makes the top much neater. To find out the width of the material you need if you want to make it like this I would say something like - lining = 1.5 * your waist circumference , tulle = 4.5 * waist circumference .

Or have a look at this;

Traeonna - I get what you're saying. I ended up adding a lower layer of ruffle that starts mid-way down the top layer and the hem is even with the other layers. I did the two lines of basting and gathered the lower ruffle slight. I'm not quite sure how I did it, but it seems to be poofing out a bit more. It's not as poofy as I'd like, but I'm pleased with it.

Chibeli - I thought of buying a petticoat off eBay, but the ones I saw were going for over $30 US and I wasn't prepared to spend that much. The cheapest one I saw I placed a bid on, but at the very last minute, someone out bidded me (god I hate it when that happens, stupid ebay). As it is, deciding to make my own turned out to be cheaper by far. I used a crinoline fabric for the bottom two layers and a stiff but soft netting for the top two layers. It cost me a nice $10.

Anyway, thank you for the advice! It definately came in handy! My Lolita dress is done and ready for parading! I'll post a picture as soon as I can get them off my brother's camera.

It's so cute and fun to wear. I like to design dresses based off of mascot characters from anime. So far the only one I have finished is my EGL Pikachu outfit that I made 2 years ago for A-kon15. It was one of my first cosplays. I currently have in the works a Gir (Invader Zim) dress based off of his robot form and I'll be making a jacket to serve as the dog suit. I'm really excited to start the project, especialy since I found all my dress fabric for under 5 bucks. Thank God for Hancock truckload sales.

I've also got a dream cosplay that is EGL. I haven't started it yet becuase I'm poor (we all know how that gose) But someday I'll have it done. It's a EGL inspired Red Eyes Black Dragon from Yu-Gi-Oh. Someday T______T

Unlike most others, my avatar isn't a cosplay picture, but a modified sketch of what I planned on doing, only because I'm a first-timer, and am new to the game. I know that quite a few Lolita costumes are complicated ones, but I plan on trying. It might be my first cosplayish outfit, but I've sewn stuff before. (If you can't read the yellowish text, and you can't, it's supposed to say "Daisy," in reference to the Mario Bros. character.) The dress is based on online doll clothes from another website I go on.

DeathOfSouls and AliciaNova - Thank you for your kind comments! ^^

Infinitywulf - I really like your outfits in that photo! Where did you get your parasol from? It's so pretty and elegant!

On another forum I'm a part of (Truly Victorian (http://www.trulyvictorian.netfirms.com//phpbb/nfphpbb/index.php)) there's a thread about parasols (http://www.trulyvictorian.netfirms.com//phpbb/nfphpbb/viewtopic.php?t=1419&highlight=parasol) and where to find them...if you're interested.

*chuckles* Actually I'm the guy on the left, but it was a gorgeous parasol. Still looking for some of the shots that were taken of me singly.

I like the parasol information, Traeonna. Sort of a shame that they don't come in yellow or orange, and that they wouldn't work with her personality anyway. Ah, well.

And on another website, someone decided to tell me 'If you're using that dress but in Daisy's colors, it won't look lolita at all!' Erm, I didn't say what style of Loli, just that it was based on lolita clothes. (I myself would say the outfit would fall under Sweet Lolita anyway.)

Depending on the material that is used to make the parasol (most places can tell you), you may be able to dye it. If it's polyester then you're out of luck, but some places do use cotton or other natural fibers.

Oh, I found a parasol at a local lace store. It's so cute and petit, and it's a good price too! Only $20! I'm still trying to decide whether or not I should actually buy it since money is a little tight right now.
