Okay, I'm going to Anime Boston '03 *crosses fingers* this year. I'm going as Rinoa, and I need a bit of help.
Firstly, does anyone have a good picture of Rinoa that I could use as a model for the costume? I've never been able to find a good one, so this would help A LOT!
Second, what would the fabric for her duster-thingy be made out of? I know it's blue ribbed fabric...but does anyone have any recommendations? (and did I spell that right? You all knew what I meant, right?)
Third, about the angel wings on the back of her duster. Would they be spray painted on, airbrushed, or painted on with fabric paints. Any other suggestions are welcome ;)
Thanks,
~Silla

A friend of mine did a Rinoa costume a few years ago and she made it out of a light blue spandex-like material (but it's not actually spandex I'm not sure about the name..) so that the arm sleeve things stay up and are the same color as the duster. for the wing design on the back she used a stencil and normal white frabric paint and then outlined it with glitter. As for pics I have a Rinoa figure that I could take pics of if you want

Hi ^_^
If you're looking for reference pictures,
http://rinoa.nu/rinoa/
has a lot of good pictures, and it also has her costume information too!
When I did her costume, I used knit-ribbed fabric which worked really well, but kinda hard to sew cause it's stretchy and slippery, but it turned out fine ^_^
And as for the wings on her back, I used white glittery felt. I cut it the shape of her wings, then I sew it onto the back of the duster. For my first Rinoa costume, I tried to use fabric paint, but it hardened and looked weird o_O Then I tried to fabric glue it, but it still looks a bit weird, so sewing it onto the duster is your best bet ^_^ (I attached a pic of it, take a look!)
Hope that helps! If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to PM me ^_^

Sewing the wings on would be your best bet - it looks great and has a sort of 3-d effect ^_^

Alright, thanks for your help!
Yes...fabric paint does get all hardened. I made a 'Cats' costume once with fabric paint, and it was hard to get into.
But that's another story ^^

Hey Sillabub! Already busy, huh? Well that's good. ^_^ I'm making a Rinoa costume myself too, at the moment. (Don't worry, we won't run into each other, I'm on the other side of the Atlantic. ^_^) I'm actually knitting the duster myself... And as I do that, I'll be able to knit the wing pattern in with white. That's my point, but it'll probably take a lot of time...

Ahh, time. Not enough of it, with only 90 days until Anime Boston '03...

90 days until Anime Boston!? crap!i gotta hurry up!! im making a Rinoa costume now actually ^.^ well...adding the details at least....for my wings im doing something a lil different...i bought a small white boa and some feathers, and i plan on making the shape of the wings with the boa and then filling in the rest with the small feathers! i thought it would be a good personal touch, plus..i dont think ive seen something like that done before... ^.^
my fabric isnt knitted or ribbed...but its the exact same color, its a stretch material...but i was careless and didnt pay attention to how i laid out the pattern and i cut part of it on the wrong grain...so it rolls up on the sides...rrrg...my big problem might be those darn zippers on her shorts!

ChibiRinoa, the zippers aren't that difficult. Just cut the shorts open about halfway and sew them in. Just be careful you don't stretch the fabric, else the zippers will curl. ^_^

but wont the shorts bunch up if you use spandex? that was one of my fears....

It's tricky, you gotta sew 'em really really easy. Breathe deeply and such things. ^_^ If you fret, you'll stretch the fabric and it's ruined. Just let the sewing machine flow~ ^_^

When I was making my wings, I used these reference pictures:

And I attached another shot of my Rinoa wings just cause the other pic was kinda blurry :D
Edit: OK, so the links won't work... go to this site, and they have some really good pictures of the wings ^_^

I know in the very, very, very beginning of the game (before the New Game/Continue sceen) it has a VERY good picture of the back of Rinoa's duster...I stilled that for my wings-model. ^^

Me neither, I've never heard of doing that technique before. I wanna see how it comes out! ^^
I've decided to airbrush mine on. Oh, glorious fun that will be x_x

i made one slight change to them...i put the feathers on, but instead of outlining it with the boa, i outlined them with silver glittery fabric paint, so there is detail to them ^.^ theyre so soft...i have to stop myself from sitting there petting them..

Celesdragon made her Rinoa duster out of a duster. It was cool, she actually found the perfect color, length and texture at the mall. The sleeves matched because they came right off the duster. Try looking around thrift shops, garage sales, e-bay, etc.

That's what I was doing yesterday- looking at a nearby Marshalls. I found lots of black dusters like Rinoa's, and one blue one. It had long sleeves, and my mom said not to cut off the sleeves.
Me and my friends (who're also going to the convention with me) are going to the mall today to look ^^

*hears her name being used*
Yup, The duster that I used, I nearly walked right by in the mall without realizing it. I found it in the window display at the Rave in the mall. *shrugs* It was about $10 so for that much, I didn't have many qualms about taking it apart. If you can find a store like that, check in the back sale areas. Just a word of warning, thsoe arm warmers do get majorly hot and uncomfortable after several hours in a crowd.

Lol, I was actually planning to ask where you found it *giggle*
My friend Winnie walked up to me yesterday in a knit-ribbed fabric, light-blue, sleeveless duster. Needless to say, I screamed "WHERE DID YOU GET THAT?!" and...
the poor sod couldn't remember :sulk:

If anyone decides to use fabric paint, DO NOT use the kind that you use for stenciling. It comes in a little tub and says something about not being applied to heavily or it'll leave an oily stain.
It did just that. Look at the attachment! Luckilly, it didn't show up like that until after the con I wore it to... but obviously, this duster isn't being worn again. ><;; I had my sister-in-law make it cause I didn't know how to sew at the time, it was way to big and it had to be taken in at the back.
When I redo this costume, I'd like to screen print the wings on. I did a little bit of screen printing in high school. So I know how to do it. I think I should be able to find the materials needed fairly cheaply... I'm hoping. ;)
Just remember that Rinoa's duster is like one of those duster's you'd buy at a store... the back and sides extend all the way to the bottom. But it's really tight fitting in the bust area. I took mine in at the sides so it'd fit nice and snugly. It looks odd to me when it's cut under the bust area and sewn to the back... kinda hard to explain. =P
