I saw some EGL style dresses (which were made by Living Dead Souls) in a shop today and I was thinking of getting them to wear to an anime con this August but I weren't sure if they were too short or not. I'm new to EGL and would like to cosplay it, but I don't know much about it, so I was wondering if someone could give me their opinion and maybe some advice?
Thank you,
Kilik :D

Well, of you want them to be longer you could add some lace, wear a longer petticoat underneith (one with a nice skirt) or add a layer of fabric.

Gothic Lolita is a fashion not a cosplay.
Note: I don't mean that in a mean/snobby way. I'm just saying.
It's awesome to see more British Gothic Lolitas!

^Yes.
and also, EGL is Mana's term... it's just GL for other brands (and SL for Sweet Lolita and so on ^^).
I too, don't mean to sound snobbish or what-not, but I get annoyed when people keep saying "E"GL when they're not even talking about Mana's designs >.<
EDIT: For some advice, look at some of the memory threads from the Lolita community on LJ:

a general rule of tumb for lolita dresses is that knee-length is good. anything shorter is typically considred too short, and anythign longer is ahrder to pull off, so not good for a newbie. ^-^
hope that helps! *needs to get on writing her "what is lolita?" thread* >>

I see. Thanks guys for clearing that all up ^ ^
i think the gothloli (?) dresses were quite short, but i won't know until i try one on. I'll try the petticoat idea too.
Thanks everyone :D

You can always lengthn them.. and
on the fashion/cosplay arguement- wear what you want. If you want a more cosplay-ish outfit.. go for it. If you'd rather a more strict following of the style..
be ready to research! I'm in that stage now (since both my dresses are quite costum-ish) it's a long process, but it really does help you decide what style you want to go with.
Just remember- cosplay or not, skirts are pretty much needed to be knee length. any higher, and it becomes a western thing, and not so much gothic lolita as erololita or just american perceptions. not that either are bad, but.. if you're going for the lolita style.. ninestar9 is right^^
Hope I got things right- hehe. I'm pretty new too.. at least, to the ideals/guidlines/whatever you want to call them.

I think Amaya De' Morte said everything, except for this:
Most lolita do not have their petticoat showing. When it does show, it looks pretty tacky.
No offense to Cat-chan, and this is just one person's opinion.

but once one gets more comfortable with the fashion, then they can expirent more with visible petticoats. i personally like the vivislbe petticoat look, especially if the petti has lace, ruffles, or anything of the sort. (my petti, which is unfortunatly too long, is an ugly net, so i need to shorten it. >>)
but yes, having short petticoats is good until one gets used to the fashion and can do more bold things. ^-^

didn't say anything on the long petticoat.. because I have no room too, hehe. My petticoats hang out.. even when I TRY to keep them in.
I've tired making them tighter.. just somehow they slip down on me.
but I agree on the petticoats, even if it doesn't look it XD

My sentiments exactly! ^^; Thank you for elaborating. But, most of the time the lace isn't at the bottom of a petticoat, or it looks bad. X_x; The net on the bottom most of the time shows, especially for someone who is just getting into the fashion.

It is kind of strange, but I wear an undershirt, and I tuck that under the petticoat. That helps it stay up...for me at least.

my petticoat s just too long in general, so it shows. XD i really need to shorten it~ ._.
and when it was actually fluffy, it only showed a little. now it shows even the bottom of the lining whihc is about 6 inches up from the bottom of the netting. ._.

it does, elegant gothic lolita and elegant gothic aristocrat are the names of the two main "sides" of Mana's brand, Moitie
