I would like to try to make a shirred JSK in the near future, but I was wondering about the amount of fabric. How much do you use in general (2X or 3X bust measurement?) to get it to look correct? Also, do you do the skirt part of it separately and sew it on, or do you just use a large amount of fabric which then allows for the skirt (as in, you use like 3X bust and use a long enough piece of fabric for the whole JSK and then shir the bodice, which leaves you with a skirt shape). I hope this makes sense, and thanks in advance for any help!!!

if you want a dress thats a line (some ppl call it princess line kinda like http://www.cosmates.jp/shop/images/products/gothic756_big.jpg), i would suggest putting making the shirring panel first attached to the skirt. leave the top part bigger for the shirring, shire it and then sew it into the rest of the dress peices. but if you want a fitted top, with a full bottom (like a baby doll style i guess you call it like thishttp://www.cosmates.jp/shop/images/products/gothic097_w2.jpg) then what i like to do is assemble the top, and attach it to the skirt portion second. so it kind of depends on the pattern your going to use and how you'd like it to turn out. either way i think it would be easier to make the shirred piece of a dress separate. you dont want to risk it ruining half of your dress, or all of it if you didnt calculate the shirring correctly.
