I will flat-out admit that I'm an EGA noob. I know almost nothing about the style, but I have the craving to put together an EGA outfit. I wanted to ask you guys, what do you consider the do's/don'ts of EGA fashion?

For my first outfit, I was thinking about a button-up shirt with a floofy scarf, a jacket similar to this (http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/butterick/shop.cgi?s.item.B3648=x&TI=10013&page=7) one, on the right, pants with a slight flare, and a tophat. Opinions?

This might be a good place to start:

If you check this section of the club:

It contains a lot of basic DOs and DON'Ts for EGL. Hope that helps! :)

Mm, just at first glance those links are EGL, not EGA. Similar aesthetic, but more or less geared towards a different gender. Rain, I'd say if you can get your hands on some G&LBs, or at least scans from some, you should take a look at what the guys are wearing in those. It'll give you at least some idea of what's done and what's not done. I do notice there's a subtle difference between looking very EGA (which, coincidentally, I believe can also be used to describe women's clothing, just the more mature-looking type) and looking like an extra from a Charles Dickens play who happens to be wearing a lot of black and white.

I have some great designs in my G&LB; if you like I can scan them for you and let you take a look.

Penny- That would be wonderful, thanks! I'll have to look into the G&LB, I don't currently own any copies. And yes, I'm going for more of a dandy-style outfit than say, kodona. I will try my hardest not to look like a Charles Dickens reject ^_~

So you are going for a dandy look? Thats a better way to refer to it, because EGA is more for women. I agree with PennyD you don't want to make it historical, but more fanciful. Think about how lolitas and aristocrates are more of a fantasy, its based on historical dress, mixed with modern appeal and a Lewis Carroll sensibility.... does that make sense? The dandies I've seen are like cute, with pocket watches, top hats, lace, white tights, gloves, dark velvets and cream colored shirts.
Dandies behave like gentlemen also! So be charming ^.^
