Hiya ^_^
I cosplay Rinoa too ^_^ If you want to make her ballgown, there's a pattern that you can possibly use: McCalls 9296
It's *very* similar to her dress, but you need to make alterations if you want to stay true to the design ^^

My first costume was Rinoa. I'm planning on redoing it whenever I can find the right fabric. Mine wasn't long enough (mid calf), and my sister-in-law made it useing a pattern that was waaaaay too big.
Does anyone know if anyone has tried Amano version of Rinoa? I'd like to try it at some point. But there's a lot of guess work there because the only reference pic I can find, she's in a crouching position covering most of her clothes, except the bottom part of her duster and her arm warmers. I'd be a very different though!
I've done Rinoa. Retired.

Rinoa was, and still is, my first costume, considering I have a crapload of work to do on it. I need to get the boots, make the skirt, add zippers to my shorts, and curve in the top part of the tanktop.

Wow. I'm so inspired now. I'm actually a rather new cosplayer and planning on starting with Rinoa's ballroom dress for something simple. ^^;; Although I may do both for the challenge.
Someone noted to me I have the resemblance I had once I got my (most recent?) haircut...hence inspiration. ^_^

There aren't any other Amano style Rinoa pictures. They weren't his designs, so he just did some art of Squall, Seifer, and Rinoa. Like the Aeris/Cloud pic from FF7 and the characters of FF9, etc.
Whee, I'm totally doing Rinoa this year. Both the duster and the ballroom dress. I've got the best Squall everrrrr. ^____^

So what about the wings? Does anyone actually use "real" wings like in Rinoa's limit break, or do most people paint on the wings? I'm making a Rinoa costume for my sister so she can be Rinoa and I can be Quistis at AnimeNext. :)
Angelwing
08-24-2003, 05:20 PM
I painted my wings using white fabric paint. That is what most people do, but having the actual wings in her Angelwing limit break is another way that I might do too later on. You can't really see it in my gallery, but here's a link to my friend's gallery that has a better picture of the Angelwings.

I DID RINOA TOO!!! Its my first costume too! I had alot of fun making it. I painted my wings on too. I would of used wings like in her limitbreak but i thought it would be too much of a hassle to do so. I have pictures but i havent put them up yet.

i did rinoa
the fabic i used was slightly ribbed but not exactly like hers
the wings, i didn't paint them on, but i wanted to...
the material streches and i wouldn't want the paint to crack
so my aunt use a light white thin cotton (i think) and used this fusing thing called "wonder under" and ironed the wings on

Rinoa was my first cosplay outfit - but I didn't make it for myself!! I made it for my sister.
I found a fantastic ribbed sweater fabric, and she had a few of the necessary components already (black bike shorts, Rinnie necklace, kickass boots) so it was really simple to pull together.
We did the wings using white fabric paint (not the 3D puffy kind though... that's gross!) and the duster looked amazing.
I think it was the little details that made our Rinnie stand out - we did the skirt using dark denim (with the button panel in the front) and sewed silver zippers onto the shorts.
It was a nice first and got me even more addicted into cosplaying . . . and looking to more challenging costumes to tackle!

I may look A LOT like Rinoa. She may be my favorite of the lovely heroines because she's the most aggressive one. But I do not know if I would be the BEST one.
My costume was piece-mealed. I bought the duster, cut out the sleeves, and dyed it blue. I made the wings out of felt and sewed them. I sewed ribbons onto the shorts because there's no way I could have done zippers on them- plus that would be uncomfortable. The denim skirt and tank top I bought were not altered- unless you count using a ribbon in the back of the skirt as a belt cause I lost weight. I used also a satin midnight blue ribbon instead of a grosgrain black one for her arm. I did have the official necklace with rings, which I liked.
My ballroom dress of hers is a slight alteration upon the design. And that was mainly based on the base dress I ordered for it. But I kinda like it better my way. I sewed a pretty organza trim on the bottom. Otherwise, the design is pretty much alike.

I've done Rinoa, her battle outfit and I'm currently working on her ballroom and Dion Rogers Design. Rinoa's blue ribbed material was so hard to find, luckly there was dreamangels website that has the duster and armwarmers already done! I'll make it myself later for it can be like 3 inches longer when I actually do find the material. The one that I really like was the Dion Rogers Design, it's pretty unique and sexy! XD

Well, since this thread's been rezzed... I'll add that I'm commissioning a new casual Rinoa from limebarb cause mine was ruined. ;_; I want something from her anyway because her costumes are so amazing. I just can't afford anything too elaborate. I'm also making her ballgown, but I'm also going to make/buy a matching shawl to wear with it to cover my arms and make me look less like I'm topheavy. It would be a nice different touch I think. ^_^
Someday I'll get around to my original design for Gun Mage Rinoa.

That sounds cool! I wanted to design a songstress Rinoa, but I'm just stumped on the sketches that I made and don't know if she should be bubbley and cute, or punk goth rock or just plain sticking to the ruffly songstress style. Also, I'm working on an original gunblade Rinoa.....just need a darn gunblade....

The rest of my cosplay pics are in my gallery. I'd advise you to use a black leotard for Rinoa's 'tank top' as it has the same V-shape cutting, fits well and doesn't ride up when you raise your hands ^^
Bobbi
02-06-2005, 05:07 AM
I just use a black v-neck tank top. I don't have any problems with it riding up since it goes under my skirt. A Leotard would be too tight on me anyway... not something I'd like to wear. Plus, they don't have spaghetti straps or from what I've seen... as low cut as it's sopposed to be.

02-06-2005, 08:20 AM
I just wore an athletic spandex tank top. Sure sure, it was not v-neck. But it fit right on top of my sports bra. Nope, the tank top alone was not supportive enough "is built like Tifa". It still looked very good and fairly accurate.
I saw a gunner Rinoa once at a Final Fantasy picnic. It had feathers to make it look Rinoa-ish.

I got mine there in October when they started going on clearance. It was like $3.00 plus my employee discount of a whole whopping 10 percent! Whooo! XD
Edit: Rinoa cosplayers rejoice! Fabric.com just got some tourqouise ribknit in! It's not quite accurate as far as rib-size and color goes, but it can work really well. I think they also have some white on there if you're worried about dying it.

Oh! If anyone is looking for a really good Rinoa wig, I highly reccomend the Alicia wig at the cosplay.com store in black or 1B. It's perfect! It's the right length, has the right style besdies a few odd things like how Rinoa's hair is angled more on one side than the other, and the highlights. That can be added using hair extentions which I'm doing.
I got 1B, which is off-black. It's a very, very, very deep dark brown-black. It looks more natural than plain black, but still looks black in pictures. It's also elora fiber! XD So it's gorgeous and silky.

Ooooh, thanks for the link! I don't see the turqoise anymore, but I was looking at the white "Poor Boy Knit" they have at this link: http://store.yahoo.com/phoenixtextiles/ab-517.html
It looks good enough to dye, and the rib is a nice width for it to work well enough for Rinoa. What do you think?

I've bought two wigs from cosplay.com sofar, the Alicia wig for Rinoa, and the Kelly IB wig for Yuna. I'm really happy with both of them. They both look extremely realistic. There's pictures of both of them in my gallery.
The Alicia wig (at least in 1B, I don't know if it varies from color to color) is Elora fiber, and it feels nicer than kanekalon, almost human-hair like. It has a realistic sheen to it, and it's very thick and full. I highly reccomend it for Rinoa. =3

Well, it looks like the Rib Knit at fabric.com is gone. Though I haven't recieved anything from them yet saying that they were out. The day after I sent in my money order for it, the fabric wasn't listed on their site anymore. So I guess someone is getting in store credit. Meh... I guess I'll use it for the denim skirt then.
I did manage to win this though!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8180335421&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT
I know it's really dark. The seller didn't know what it was made out of, and I got it for really cheap. I'm going to see how it takes to bleach or rit color remover. If that works, I can probably lighten it up a few shades. I kind of want to make mine a bit darker though because darker colors are more flattering on me. So I'll have to see. *prays this works out* I love the size and depth of the ribs though!

That fabric looks really reallly good for Rinoa. That will be good if you could get it to work. Maybe I should check E-bay more often too for this. I've been wanting to remake mine for sometime.

Hey, I don't know how many people have tried this before, but I discovered a great method to getting that stonewashed appearance on Rinoa's skirt!
http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=307215
Basically, I prewashed the fabric once, then while it was just out of the wash machine and damp, I applied a coat of heavily watered down white acrylic paint all over the denim with a sponge. It takes awhile to do this. Then, I put more paint into it, and then sponge painted that on, so that it was a bit brighter. After it dried, I washed the fabric a second time (you're sopposed to prewash denim twice to keep it from shrinking too much) Then I'm going to go ahead and start cutting out the skirt and sewing it!
It's looking really spiffy sofar.
The reason why I opted to use paint was because bleach is very hard to control. Paint will do a simular effect and still look very nice without ruining the fabric or turning it weird colors. I also used some shimmery denim. It seems to have a slight sheen (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v324/bobbi_public/commission/88.jpg) to it in some of the FMV images.
Yay my duster fabric should be coming soon. ^_^
