View Full Version : Tutorial- Yuna's Staff *one with sphere*

01-21-2007, 09:23 PM
YAY! Another tutorial. ^^ This is to make Yuna's staff. Not Nirvana or the most popular one, this one: http://www.eternal-legend.com/playerone/yuna/rod.jpg

The colors are sorta off in that picture, so yeah. =3

Materials: (some items not featured in picture)

3/4 PVC Pipe
A good size styrofoam sphere
A couple of 1" foam brushes
Acryllic Paint--(colors in picture, brand doesn't matter)
Hot Glue Gun
2 Packs of Paperclay
Cutting Items *scissors, etc*
Various Size Brushes
Ribbon *fabric ribbon, color doesn't matter, but navy would be preferred*
Reference Pictures
Drill (1" screw)
Two bells
Two red and blue beads

*you might want to get your dad or someone to help you with this as I did mine. x3*

1) Use a saw to cut your PVC pipe to your preferred height. Does this over a garbage can. It'll probably work better with another person helping you.

2) Now drill that hole into your styrofoam ball.

3) Heat up your glue gun and fill the hole with hot glue.

4) Quickly pull on your sphere to your PVC pipe.

5) Roll out a nice pie sized pile of Paperclay. Roll it and push it around your styrofoam ball.

Then add two rings around the PVC pipe using the Paperclay.

Now add that bottom design around the bottom of the ball. Don't forget those little petals.

6) Paint your middle section with the turquoise color and the other two sections with navy. And those two clay rings with gold. (more than one layer of paint required. let paint dry)

7) Wrap the upper navy section with that ribbon *in a sort of braid like pattern* and paint over it with the navy. Also wrap the string around with the bells and beads like so.

8) Paint the upper part gold. (from here on you're going to be using your brushes and many layers of paint are required)

9) And now paint the part above that turquoise.

10) Now paint over the sphere with beige. *yes, it's going to be cracked if you let it dry in a cold dry area* Get out your pencil and start drawing that blue design.

11) Cover the part on the top with turquoise paint. (lolz, those are my Soi Fong rings in the background. xD)

12) Remember to let all this paint dry with a fan. And your done. ^^ As for the bottom part, you'll want to either create it with Paperclay and cover it with gold or go to the hardware section in Wal*Mart and buy a chair tip.

Good luck! ~ London <3

the name is mage's staff i think^^ it's the same staff black mage paine uses in ff x-2.

another idea for the designs on the staff/pipe (below the sphere): if you use cardboard or craft foam as a basis instead of modeling the clay freehand, you'll get a more even shape. (i used paper maché to cover the styrofoam ball & the cardboard & foam designs).

instead of using a paperclay "ribbon" (for the design on the sphere), you could also use real cord as a basis.

(sorry haven't uploaded a close-up pic of the staff yet but i guess you get the idea^^)

Um...it's not Paperclay ribbon.

This staff design has many names; Rod of Wisdom, Long Rod, Lullaby Rod, etc.

I could've used cardboard, but this is like, my second prop. =P And the first one was just paint, really. I'll try to keep that in mind if I do Nirvana or the other staffs. I might even get through the game without using Nirvana. xD

don't forget that you can also sand paperclay as well.

Yeah, I know. >>

ok i'm sorry... what i meant by "ribbon" was the design on the sphere that you actually just painted on. (i used satin ribbon on the staff / pipe / stick as well^^)

you're right about the names, i just had "mage's staff" on my mind cause that was the name of the staff when i finished the game, i may have modded it... oh my it's been such a long time^^;

you should post the link to this thread / tut in the sticky tutorial thread as well, it's cool!

Ahh. ^^ Yours looks loads better than mine tho'. I was sifting through the pictures and I was like, 'ZOMFG.' x3

Yeah, I just went with Long Rod because that's what this reference site said. I usually like Rod of Wisdom. And Mage's Staff is probably the name I'll use too coz' that's what Yuna is currently using in my game. =]]

Really? Hmm, I s'pose...-goes to post-

wow that's crazy that you posted this tutorial cuz i'm making the same rod too!! I think when i looked it up its default name is "Enchanted Rod" but it has several so blehh LOL

I think what's strange about how i'm doing it is that i'm using a 6" rubber ball you find in those kids sections for toys haha!! i'm spray painting it and then adding the designs on and what not.. i hope to get it done sometime next week but you're tutorial gave me some great ideas!!

you may want to consider pasting the surface of the ball or using a material with a hard surface right away, because if the ball is flexible, the paint & clay may crack.

actually i looked it up in the meantime too and it's the staff / rod you get as a treasure in the first cloister of trials (Besaid)^^ that's probably the one called enchanted rod. of course, there's other ways of obtaining it by modding & such... anyway, i like the design^^

You can paint those cheap inflated rubber balls with acrylic paint but it has to be Art Grade Acrylic. The cheap craft acrylic paint will crake because the actual acrylic contain is so low it doesn’t retain any of its stretchy plastic quality. You can buy any acrylics from the art section of Michael’s (Winsor&Newton , Academy Acrylics, Golden or Onxy)

I painted the world onto this ball using art acrylic paint.

Also here’s a tip never buy a paint that has the word Hue in it. It means that that paint has a water soluble pigment and tends to be translucent where as paints with the word Med or medium or doesn’t have the word hue is a lot stronger and solid pigment in it.

that's a cute globe^^

yeah i highly recommend winsor & newton... i always use the art grade kind. good to hear it's actually this flexible ô_0

it will crack though when applied to an extremely soft or flexible surface (i've had it happen before), so i guess it depends on the kind of ball one would use^^

oh gosh thank you all!! i havne't bought the paint sets yet so thank you for the tips! i figured i had to do something to it before painting it since acrylic cracked so i definitely know what to do now XD

Cyute lil globe too btw!

-glomps Kukki-nee-sama- You are so cool. ^^

Hiyoko-Chan: Thanks. =3 I hope my ideas helped you somewhat. I like this staff alotta more than the default one *although that one is cool* but the rest are also amazing. A wee bit too hard for London. xD
