You could try makeing with plaster bandages using styrofom and wire for reinfordement. It would take a long time and a lot of work but the plaster can be sanded smooth and it would still be fairly light.

You could make the main shape out of Foam Core and then add the details with clay/papermachae/other material. But the foam core is super light so you have weight room to add the detailed things. Hope this helps. I have to go to dinner now so I'll come back after to explain further.

Foam Core.... does Joann's or any other fabric store carry that? Where would one get that?

Yeah almost any craft store should have it. I think you should try to use as light of materials as posible because even if you try to make it light it will be pretty heavy in the end. I would stay away from metals and use chrome metallic spray or acrylic paint to give things a metal look. For the chains you should use plastic chains (that you can probably find at a home center) and then spray paint them. For the pin like things that the chains attach to you could use wooden dowels. For the curved spike on the coffin thing I sugest not useing real nails or sharp objects because if you wear this costume to a con the security people will tell you to remove them or something. My friend made claws out of a rake and we sprayed them with silver paint and hey told him to remove them. Also some one had something like that from a Trigun costume and he had it on his shoulder and he used really nail and he ended up poking someone. So don't use real nails because of weight issues but also for secruity reasons. You could probably use chopsticks and then paint them. I'll make another post cuz I need to do something right now but I promise I'll be back.

I just got the game today I suggest making the Game version of the coffin. It is much more basic than the drawn versions. I'd try to use plastc sheeting (like at home depot) for the sides. For the red circle I dunno maby a large tupperware? I'd try the glue dipped felt technique (Mentioned in armour making forums) for the leather wrap. now I REALLY want to build one!

hehe im considering going all out and making the version from the game artwork... with all the curves and detailing...

im such a whore for punishment XD

That's crazy talk! The in-game version would work best IRL. If you made the one with all the curves it would either be too heavy or be too fragile to drag around at a con. PS. Thanks to you digital Cactus I now have plans of cosplaying Grave >.< now I have 3 HUGE projects O_o Luckily school is almost out ^_^

I actually have the top half of my coffin carved (not sculpted or painted) I also have two guns partially made, but one is half as thick as the pic in my gallery. I have to post a piccy so you can tell me which you like better ;_; I should be done with the head peice for the coffin by the end of the weekend so I'll try to comandeer my freind's digital camera for that too.

*revives thread from heh.... Beyond the Grave* Sorry, that pun was definatly intended! XD

Ok so some of you may or may not know, I have started construction on Grave's coffin. Im making it into 3 seperate segments. the round red part will be one, the top part with the skull and gun is another and the bottom section with the wierd ridges is another... I am using Owens Corning Foam (the pink stuff you get at Home Depot)

actualy im using about 7 layers of it that I am using foam glue to group together n make a solid chunk to carve the coffin out of. it will be papier maché'ed and fibreglassed for strength and durability...

my question was.. should I use industrial velcro to link the pieces together.. or what? if anyone has suggestions I would be much obliged.

Nando used foam core board for his coffin, stripped the paper off one side, carved it then painted it. The problem with his coffin is that it's very fragile, you don't want to run into anything with that thing on. You can't even really rest it on anything while wearing it so he could only wear it for 1-2 hours before he'd have to take it off from the severe weight of it on his arms.

I suggested to him instead to use upholstery foam, which can be easily carved using an electric meat carver, any serrated edged knife, even scissors for small detail work. For the details on the front like the skull and sort you could make the pieces separate then attach; upholstery foam and hot glue are best friends. Painting it will take quite a few layers of base coat, but one that’s on, it’d be a breeze.

The big advantage to upholstery foam? YOU CAN SIT ON IT! If you're waiting in line, rather then going and changing out of costume just plop down on your coffin and take a load off. It’s a transportable couch! Nando didn't quite take my plushie coffin idea seriously when I suggested that to him but I’m sure after the hell of expo(transporting that thing was a bitch) he’d wish he’d done it my way. Good luck!

It'd be awesome ^_~ maybe I'll make a mini version just to prove it to ya? Then I'll whap you with it at fanime along with my Chibi Gunblade

Hahah, don't tempt me. :)

I dropped my Gungrave costume because I saw how difficult it was for Nando to move around. I didn't want to have that same problem, so for now anyway, no costumes with limited mobility. Hmm... but I'll keep plushy props in mind for future costumes. :D

As for Fanime, I'll be there to visit for a few hours, but I'm actually gonna be attending a sci-fi con nearby. :(

When I had my obnoxious DigitalCactus logo strapped to me (see profile pic)as a substitute for my coffin at Otakon 2003, I wasn't as limited as I thought I would have been, surprisingly. The only annoying part was that the chains kept sliding off. Ah well so getting back to my original point...

Here is a picture of the coffin and notice how I've seperated the segments into 3 pieces. acutaly I coloured the cross as being part of the mid section but actualy It will be a 4th seperate piece as well

Also If anyone is interested I have one pic of my coffin in progress in my ...who would have guessed it... In Progress folder! Huzzah biotches! XD
