View Full Version : misa death note black outfit.

yes there have been tons of topics already but none fitted my needs, so i'm posting a new one. and it's kind of specific.

ok i'm doing the black outfit with the zipper shirt and the leather skirt and the arm things.

my questions; one the belt with the discs on it. anyone ever seen one in the stores or online cause i'd rather buy a belt than make one.

two the arm things on her wrists, what kinds of things would you make them out of. for the most part i'm a metal person when it comes to what i have around to use right off hand, but for the blade parts i don't think i could have them if they were metal. on top of i've broke both my wrists and i think it might end up being to much wieght for them to handle.

three the weird netting thing on her upper arms or shoulders whatever you wanna call that area, what is it? just tattered stalking material? or maybe just some black material. and how would you get it to stay put should be be seperate from the gloves or part of the gloves?

four what length do you think would be good for the zippers on the shirt? i was thinking anywhere from 5" to 8" being the longest one. should they all be the same size or different sizes?

5 what kind of shirt should it be? a basic t-shirt material tank top or maybe i thought it looked alot like my brothers under armor he wears when he plays airsoft. anyone have opinions on that?

please and thank you for any and all responses. below are links to another cosplayers version of the outfit, a link to just a pic and a link to the pic with arrow on it for what i was talking about :)

I always thought the belt was just a plain studded belt with three rows of studs. You could find that at Hot Topic easily.

For the things on her arm, maybe make them out of plastic? Metal would be pretty heavy, and you wouldn't want your wrists to be too strained. I don't know how you'd go about making those out of plastic, but it would be lightweight and if done correctly it would look very nice. (Plus you wouldn't have to worry about it tearing your costume if you were to brush against yourself.)

I'd use a regular black tanktop, t-shirt material. But when putting the zippers in make sure it stays tight against your waist to show off a figure. Different sizes would make the outfit look interesting to the eye, too. Just maybe not too much, because it might look cluttered. The cosplay example you had looked very cluttered, but the source image looks very clean. (Does that make sense?)

You could take black panty-hose and cut slashes in it for the tattered material, then wear it so it sticks up under the arm warmers.

That's all the ideas I have so far, hope they help!

she has two belts one is the three studded thing the other is under it with the round discs.

and thank you for your advice.

my parents own a factory that makes parts for the plastic industry if my dad can get one of his business guys to make me a doll and a mold for my doll, i'm sure he can find someone to make me some arm things if i give him a sketch so thank you that idea.

but that kinda takes time so i might have to come up with something else in the mean time so if anyone else has suggestions they would be greatly apperciated also and any word on that second belt would make me wuvs you for ever.

also a new question just came to mind as i started working on my leather skirt.

how long should it be? the picture cuts off before we can see the bottom. the cosplayer in the reference pic has hers mid thigh. but i was thinking it might be nice to go down to the the knee like her other skirts. just like a lolita skirt in length just not in style.

Well, for the blade parts, what about using polystyrene(IE: plastic) and foam? that way, they'd be lightweight...i wouldn't reccommend hitting anyone with them if you go that route though...

thank you.

then what'd be the point in wearing it? all my pants fit perfect i get them altered, i wear belts hoping that one day i can Jet Li someone with them :)

i don't think you understood what she was talking about.

Since she'll be wearing them on her wrists, she probably wants something pretty lightweight. :) Also, I doubt she's going to go around attacking anyone at a con. It's mostly visual.

ok so i went the foam route after me and my boyfriend disscussed it for the blade parts. drawing up patterns now.

there are a few parts on the wrist things that look like steel and i have some super then steel i'll use for those bracket peices just out of ease if i can't find a nice foam i'd like for that.

i bought some 3mm foam that was in larger sheets and some 6mm smaller sheets. anyone have any suggestions for cutting it or after cuttin th foam that would give me super smooth edges.

I'm making a quickie version of this outfit for ACen. ^_^
For the disc belt, I'm taking a plain black belt and epoxying metal disks (kind of like washers) I found at the hardwear store onto it.
Gloves...I'm using regular arm warmers and putting the pantyhose-ish part underneath it. I'm going to try to see how spirit gum works at keeping it on my upper arms.
No con in the world will let you walk around with metal blades, so foamies are great to use for the blades themselves..they're lightweight and you can stack them to make them thicker. It's what I'm making mine out of! I *love* foamies..you can seriously do so much with them.
For the metal parts on the arm blades I've discovered small sheets of very thin metal called "etching metal". It comes in plastic tubes and can easily be cut with just regular scissors and it's *very* flexable. I used it on the toe caps on my Rosette boots and it worked nicely.
As for cutting your foamies...exacto knife it. And use a new blade...those things will cut through foamies like butter. ^_^
I don't plan on making my skirt that short either! I'm making mine fall around mid-thigh.

05-04-2007, 10:40 PM
yeah my boyfriend just sent me the scan out of his artbook. i didn't know the skirt was that short. :P it's a stinking leather mini. definately making it longer than the pic just out of sheer fact i don't want to cut the leather that much and waste it.

the disc belt my boyfriend said he found the exact belt at kohl's. so i plan on looking there before i start making my belt.

the etching metal sounds a lot like shim. i have tons of that, but i was thinking of using some of the thicker galvinized steel scrap for the brackets so it'd be more rigid and stand up straight.

but thanks so much for saying you put that on your boots for rosetta. i must go tell the person working on jthm boots, mind if i send them your way for questions?

spirit gum i think the bf has. so i might borrow some from him if he does. if not i was thinking of using hair spray. i used it to hold up my lace on my socks at halloween. but it makes me look shiny, like plastic, or something. so i doubt that will look good in pics :P.

on your arm warmers are you adding fingers to it? or just leaving them as arm warmers?

and thank you for your help, it's very much apperciated.

05-04-2007, 10:51 PM
The length of that skirt scared me..lol No way am I having something that short over *my* thunder thighs! XD!

my arm warmers go over your hand..they have a thumb hole and all four fingers go out of one larger one. I don't like fingerless gloves (they chafe after a while) so I got the ones you put all four fingers though. ^_^

You found the disc belt at Kohls?! I work there and we didn't get any in! (or else we're out of them) Hmpf..I'll have to complain..lol

You can send your friend my way..no prob! I'll warn you that the etching metal eventually started peeling and looking yucky. And it's hard as all hell to get it smooth..mine eventually started puckering so I'm going to make a new set out of foamies or possibly resin cast them. Rosette's one of my main cosplays so I definately have to keep up maintenence on her!

05-07-2007, 05:55 PM
i have another question for you, what are you doing about your shirt? i bought a tank top at target that looked right since i wanted it to be tight and not be shaped weird like my dolls tanks.

and i plan on putting the zippers in it. are you doing that or sewing them on top? a friend told me i should just sew them on top like my grandma did to my selphie dress.

and thanks for all your help, it's quite nice.

05-07-2007, 07:25 PM
I sewed mine inside...on top they looked kind of funny. Sewing them inside looks a *lot* neater. I cut slits into the tank top and put the zippers on the inside underneath and rolled the sides of the slits under and pinned them to the zipper and sewed them down that way. ^_^
I enclosed a couple of pics of mine...a close up of the zippers and a pic of the entire thing. I used a tank top that had a design woven into it. ^_^

What kind of shoes are you wearing out of curiosity? I can't find pictures of her footwear in that outfit *anywhere* I plan on wearing my platform boots with the buckles. They'll look nice with the fishnets I think. ^_^

05-07-2007, 08:02 PM
the boots no clue. i haven't been able to find pics of her shoes either, and my boyfreind dug through his artbook for me. but my boyfriend said to look at pics of her other shoes. so i'm hoping my knee high thick heel black lace up boots will work.

also what length zippers did you use on the top?

05-07-2007, 10:00 PM
7 inch. ^_^

05-16-2007, 05:09 PM
thanks i went and bought the same size. :) and another question about your zipper placement. how did you decide to place the zippers in the shirt? did you just do it randomly, like the picture? and if you did like the picture how'd you mark where they went?

06-04-2007, 04:06 PM
thanks for all the ideas and tips ladies. for my first Misa cosplay i did one that was a mix between that cover shot and this poster

and here is how that turned out

but as you can see i didn't put the zippers on the shirt and i didn't do the hand spike thingies. and i used a short pleated skirt instead of a leather one. i found the disk like belt i used at a thrift store. and i modled the boots after the ones that she wore on the poster.

here are pics of people i have that have done the spikie things

i'd like to get tips on doing a photoshoot of this Misa pose

06-04-2007, 04:25 PM
And I actually marked mine how they are in the picture...and I used chalk to mark the placement. ^_^ I put the shirt on and *then* marked it so I could see how the zippers would be properly placed. ^_^
I like your cross! ^_^ And I didn't go the leather skirt route either. I used a plain flat front black skirt. Pleats + my tummy do not mix. ^_^
Errrm...I wouldn't do that pose..haha. It looks...well, like she's trying to do something naughty. I don't think the reactions you'd get to a photo like that would be good. O_O If you insist on doing it I reccommend putting on shorts under the outfit to prevent accidental panty shots. Also have really good lighting..dim lighting in a bedroom always looks terrible. ;_;

06-04-2007, 06:50 PM
hotaru thanks so much for pictures!!!

and thanks miyabi, i was using masking tape but it was peeling abit when i took the shirt off. i have half my blades cut out and i'm working on the partterns for my bracketing soon. :) still haven't found decently priced cuffs :(. hitting the flea market next weekend though. :).

is the leather skirt a bad idea? i've almost got two finished for this misa outfit. a longer one to walk around in. and a shorter one that looks like the pic for photoshoots. and maybe the masq, since i think i'm walking my bf onto the stage since he won't be able to see out of his ryuk mask to well i don't think. plus the funky shoes.

06-05-2007, 10:32 AM
Miyabi yea it does look kinda bad, but i always liked that shirt in the manga and i wasn't going to do it at a con or anything (at my house). and i was already thinking that (under shorts). and thanks for the lighting input, i'll make sure to inform my camera person. ; )

i was thinking about wearing it to a con for a rave costume, but the wig i wear for her is so hot to wear. and then getting hot and sweaty at a rave. :crylaugh:

i think i'm going to have to get my wig cut before i attempt to do this. it's really long, espically in the back. but i kinda hate to do this too since i think it looks better on me this way (in the front), even thought her hair is probally shorter. but then again i could get better detail shots of this and my post jacket. i have one shot of my jacket where my hair is moved out of the way that looks really bad. :lost:
(also take into consideration that i got real boots to use now instead of those crappy boat covers.)

i'd also like to do this version of Misa
(one in middle pin stripped dress)
i already kinda attempted to do it with a dress i found, but i'd really like to alter it to look a lot better. any tips on that?

i'd also like to someday do the lolita dress that she wears in the anime when she sings that one song. anybody for reference picutres for that?

06-06-2007, 12:51 AM
I didn't think the skirt looked leather since in the pictures I've seen of the outfit it lacked the white highlights that indicate shine in anime/manga images. ^_^ But if you went with a matte leather it would probably be okay!

I think the pinstriped dress you're wearing looks cute as is. ^_^

06-06-2007, 09:31 AM
the skirt on the dress needs to be more pleated. and i need to find a lighter material to wear for the long sleeve shirt part. wearing that was so hott. :(

i think i might have to try to do the screen captures myself for her loli dress in the anime. : /

if you get the screen captures please post them. and how many misa outfits are you planning on?

and i now have a few pics of my in progress outfit's peices that are wearable or at my house. http://images.cosplay.com/gallery.php?cat=77877&member=64100. tell me what you guys think of what i got so far. and is my longs skirt to long?

06-11-2007, 02:13 AM
I think the skirt length is just fine. ^_^ Shorter is not always better!

06-11-2007, 08:48 AM
ok so the long skirt is good. thanks, cause with my other costumes i don't think my short skirt will be done in time for otakon. :).

06-11-2007, 10:40 AM
i just depends what you are trying to show for the legs. if just fishnet then that should work good for you, but if your going to try to show the straps or the tattered black thing it might be too long. it also depends how long the boots your wearing are.

and as for how many version of Misa i'm doing. i guess my goal is to do all the version that i like and to do the hand things right. BUT i do want to wait till i get a Ratio to cosplay with till I do her again. unless i do the loli anime version for Dragon*Con. and the "bedroom" version if just going to be a picture shoot and not worn to a con.

so i am looking at doing these for either Dragon*Con in Sept. or JaniCon in Nov. and i'll do the shoot after i get my Misa wig cut shorter. and i finally found someone who will do that for me! :crylaugh:
