Any good places to get those fuzzy, small feathers you see on pre-made wings?

08-28-2002, 10:12 AM
I was at JoAnns the other day ( looking for feathers, actually! XD ) and they were having a sale on bags of those little feathers.. they were multicolored though, I wouldn't know what to do if you just wanted one color. Cut open a pillow? XD;; .... I'd try JoAnns meself. ^^;

I'd never thought of JoAnn's for feathers, I usually go their just for fabric. :} Do you know if you can dye feathers?

08-28-2002, 03:54 PM
I tried to dye feathers for a science project (had to build a dang bird). Don't try spray paint or hairspray >< Just makes the feathers brittle and they lose their soft feel... Personally I'd like to hear the answer too >>;

I wonder if Rit dye would work.. that's what I use for all my costuming whatnot. ^_^ *wonders*

We have a JoAnn's Etc. here, so they have a whole big craft section full of stuff. ^____^

hmmm... I've never heard of that dye. What is it for, exactly? Is it a type of Fabric paint? -RainbowSheltie17

08-28-2002, 05:30 PM
Yesh, it's a fabric dye. Well, Sami, if it works let me know! I would really like to finish the headress to a costume I've been dying to complete >_<

08-28-2002, 09:40 PM
As far as dying them white, what about bleach? It usually works on anything.

08-29-2002, 09:41 AM
How about Floral Spray? It might be worth a try...

08-29-2002, 12:19 PM
What's Floral Spray?

08-29-2002, 03:08 PM
Wal-mart carries white feathers in a few sizes but in general you really can't buy a dye for feathers if you want to keep it's soft feel...Bleach would most likely eat right through them. If I were you I would just try to find white feathers and avoid dyeing if possible...Now the Floral spray...That's new to me but I heard it's expensive

08-29-2002, 03:30 PM
So, what IS Floral Spray, exactly?

08-29-2002, 03:38 PM
> So, what IS Floral Spray, exactly?

Spray-on color you use for dried/silk flowers.

How effictive do you think if will work on feathers? Will it hold to the new color, and what colors does this dye come in?

08-30-2002, 09:50 PM
Don't use bleach on colored feathers/maribou, whatever you do! I was bleaching an off-white maribou to white because JoAnns ran out of pure white ones...and I ended up creating chlorine gas in my basement ^^ Needless to say, the boa was sort of...gone..by the time I was done. BAAAAAAD idea (I think it's because of the finish they put on them)

AC&Moore sells little bags of those white fluffy feathers.

and when i go to dye feathers for my friends wings i was considerring trying the RIT dye, but i havnt done it yet. That and we found some in the right color... so who knows... O.o

08-30-2002, 10:58 PM
0_0 whoa...I'm retracting that bleach suggestion, lol! I know it's destructive, but I didn't know it would eat marabou.

08-31-2002, 04:45 AM
Umm... so does any one know if Bleach is safe to use on feathers? And, what colors does the dye come in?

08-31-2002, 08:31 AM
The dye comes in a decent selection of colors AND if they dont quite have what you want i've learned the colors do mix without too much of a problem, but maybe thats for those brave people who were taught heavy color theory in school ^^;;;

I make wings!!! You can get feathers at Micheals on southhill!! Black, white, red, purple, brown, orange, whatever color, small, fuzzy, big, or striped!! I just made me an awesome pair of black wings. They look just like falcon wings with accented peacock quills!!

08-31-2002, 07:07 PM
oh yeah, Michaels, thats the other place that had feathers that i couldnt remember what it was. they have the purple i need for the pair i want to make. ^^

08-31-2002, 08:27 PM
I wish I had your Michaels, mine has such a limited variety of feathers..

08-31-2002, 10:12 PM
There's these dye kits you can purchase at this site-

this site! (http://www.ostrichesonline.com/cgi-bin/store/shop?cmd=search&category=feather&type=ostrich&subtype=dyekit)

...so I assume most dyes will probably work, and if you are bleaching then maybe it's better to use a peroxide bleach rather than chlorine based, I am thinking that peroxide will be milder on the feathers (haven't experimented cos i haven't had the need to bleach or dye feathers yet)

Incidentally, anyone know where I can get a hold of extra large flight feathers (preferably white) or know of a good way to make convincing, large flight feathers?

08-31-2002, 10:57 PM
Michaels sells the big feathers in packs of 4. they are nice, just made arisuchans Sara wings out of them, came out nice. ^^

09-04-2002, 10:13 PM
Yeah, those were the feathers I used. I used black ones and if you double up on the feathers going both ways. . . Well, umm that's really hard to explain. But basically, the technique using "eight large feathers, four going one way and another four overlapping those going another way can create an awesome effect. My wings look pretty nice. It takes a long time to make just one though, I took three hours on a left wing. I looks like I hacked it off of an unexpecting crow, but Hell, if it looks good. Spend the time, save the money, look both mysterious and sexy, and convince people that you are a real angel or some other condemned beast. IT's all worth it. Uh. . . about the dye thing. It tends to come off if it's handled too much, and it WILL fade in heat and just after exposure to the air. If you give it long enough, black feathers will fade into cobalt blues. Reds and purples will turn into pinks, and Oranges and Yellows. . . well, they are what they are. Michaels does sell large white feathers. If anyone needs help finding or getting some shipped to them, lemme know and I'll see what I can do. I can not guaruntee anything, but if you give me a location of what city your in, I can see if there is a place out there. I've got some pretty awesome connections with the powers that be. Hahaha, no pun intended.
But another suggestion to making lifelike wings. Use uncommon feathers. Yeah sure you've got the fluffy white and black feathers. But try highlighting where the bones would be by taking those long stringy feathers off of a peacock quill and making a line of those. Again, I appologize for the explanation but it's really hard to describe. Pheasant feathers look awesome in warrior like wings. Long white feathers look good in flight wings, Peacock and any other decor feathers look nifty in well. . . decor wings. Like the Madhatter from Angel sanctuary. I actually made a pattern to make butterfly wings weaved out of peacock quills. It's pretty nifty. WEll, I gotta go. Jya Minnasan!! >"<Lulu.

> You can get feathers at Micheals on southhill!!

Those will get SO expensive though... My three wings have about 2lbs of feathers on them... which means it would cost a fortume to buy them in packs of 4. >_<;;;;

Which reminds me I need to order a few pounds of feathers again, since I want to make a bigger 3 wing set! =)
