View Full Version : X Men costumes

05-11-2003, 08:21 AM
I was wondering if anyone knows what the official movie X Men2 costumes (as worn by Storm, and others during their flights in the jet) are made of. Looks quite solid and not really made of common fabrics such as cotton or lycra.

Here's a little impression (still a very vague image, but I couldn't find any better :S)

yay someone finally made this topic!
I've been looking for something too; I may just have to settle for a nylon/lycra bodysuit unless I find something better soon. I've also been looking for pics of Rogue's suit from X2 (I think she only wears it in the last scene in the oval office?) because it looks different than the one on the action figure I have. only one I've found was a closeup wallpaper on the official site...

I've seen them recreated in leather, which turned out very nicely. But I might have a chance to wear one of the real ones soon so I'll let you know *lol*

It's mostly likely Leather; the same kind used to make the leather bike jacket.

The most, it'll be slightly thick vinly. I had found one here, and it even got a cloth backing but only comes in dark brown.

I know someone who had made the Jean Grey one before (according to X-Men design). Will ask her what she uses.

I met the X-MEN cosplayers (Wolverine and Storm) at the Comic Con 2001 Masquerade. Judging from their costumes close up, they used black leather that would be used to make black leather jackets. Here's a URL of their picture:

Juding from the pictures, they appear to be leather to me.

05-14-2003, 11:43 PM
hmm......yeah, looks like leather...I was going to attempt a Cyclops costume, but my skills are no where near attempting leather yet. :P Maybe for fun I'll gather some similar clothes he wears in the movie and just make a visor and hat and cosplay as him in his normal gear.

on the topic of xmen cosplay, heres my origional rogue costume i just finished
its for a group at a con

05-16-2003, 12:56 PM
cool, I could definetly see it existing in the x-men universe as a costume....it goes well with the ones they are currently wearing in New X-Men....heavy blacks with bright yellow x's.

It is leather, if you watch the commentary from the first movie, the leather costumes were stiff when they first put them on, and none of the actors could move right. There's a great out take where they're trying to hop over the wall on Liberty Island, and they all fall over cause the costumes won't move with the :)

05-25-2003, 08:04 PM
I know it's actually leather, as was pointed out in the movie commentary, but you could probably imitate the look with tablecloth vinyl... just be sure to line it!

05-30-2003, 09:59 AM
Sorry but go with the leather. It last longer and just has a wonderful feel and touch to it.

06-01-2003, 05:00 PM
yeah, I was thinking of doing the table cloth vinyl idea, but if I ever get enough money to do it, I'd probably just go all out and do leather to make it more authentic.....although this would be no time nearby considering my skill level, but, someday, I'll redo Wolverine in style :)

hee hee, I'm glad I found this topic. I've been interested in making a Rogue costume too. It's just buying leather can get expensive and I'm poor at the moment *sighs* lol

06-11-2003, 11:25 PM
i think its leather too.....but that would be too expensive....im planning on making a cyclops outfit..and im going to make mine out of vinyl ....its not as strong as leather...but it works too....i already have the black vinyl though...and its quite strong....but its not like your going to wear it forever....so it should last and also taking care of it....

Sounds very interesting, I think as a future costume project do Jean Grey's outfit (from the movie) and also Phoenix, Dark Phoenix, and Marvel Girl outfits (she's my fav X-gal! lol!). ;)

06-19-2003, 12:43 AM
haha, i can tell, with that costume line up. A Phoenix costume would be sooo cool, I always liked the earlier green version! Good luck!

I agree with everyone else - there's really no way to do the movie costumes and have them look accurate without real leather. the immitation stuff won't hold the color properly, and will look very fake.

I'd suggest doing some of their "normal" clothes with the standard X-Men jackets (an example would be what Rogue is wearing towards the latter half of X-2 after being picked up by the Blackbird).

I myself am doing a Rogue costume for SDCC - but it's strictly comic-only (a super-ghetto three-panel civvies outfit from X-treme X-Men), because I am an uber nerd and only like Rogue from the comics. Marie? pheh. PHEH!

For Jean Grey's Marvel Girl outfit (the first X-MEN outfit she wears in the group-it's all green w/ a yellow belt and boots) she wears a yellow mask. Should I make it out of fabric material or some type of sculpting product? What do u guys suggest? Thankies! If u need a pic to see it, just let me know! ^_^

I've made a few masks similar to Marvel Girl's out of latex, with a plaster mold, but that may be too much hassle for such a simple design...

Face paint is the first idea that comes to my mind. That way you won't have to worry about spirit gum or elastic strings.

Speaking of X-men. I finally finished mine for the SDCC. I will be
doing Emma Frost - The White Queen.

Everthing on the entire costume (gloves, top, thigh high boots etc). is made from blazing white leather.

I just need to integrate a bit of SFx and it will be ready to go.

Hey, a friend of mine is doing Emma Frost for Dragon*Con.

What SFX are you doing? It may give her some ideas...

I have a minature fog machine that is mounted in and ducted to at least one hand. I am still deciding if the minature strobes (The only thing that shows up well in bright lights) are worth it.

For one person that wanted to Gambit, I took a set of plastic playing cards and coated half the deck with one half of AB solution and the other half with the other. When one card from each is brought together and waved the vapours form a light smoke.

A minature fog machine?

Where do you get one of those?

I am planing on making the storm costume from the x-men movie. I already bought my vinyl. I found a really nice vinyl in a fabric factory. It soft to the touch yet a bit on the thick side and also has a little streach to it. I think it will work quite nicely.

Post pics when you're done w/ your Storm costume! :)

What material do you guys suggest I use for Jean Grey's Phoenix outfit? I want to start planning now for next year. Thankies! ^_^

yeah, it's leather. I love that out-take. one of the best ones on the DVD, other that the spiderman one :p

Anyways, I'm going to GA comic convention(in Boston) as Rogue. Manic Panic has great hair stripes that I'm going to use, for the white, with my real hair. Probuly going as her movie form if I can't finish a comic one.

Just the thread I've been looking for. I know it's uber early but next year's SD Comic-Con I'm making Rogue's new leather-ish body suit.. thing, lol. My Mom told me she found a place that sells leather, a pretty good amount of it but it's lile.. $200 odd dollars.. until I win the lotto.. I think I'll put off with that, or save my money. If I knew how to go screen caps.. I'd attempt to get some photos for everyone.

I'm curious...i'm workin on a "casual/bar dress" Logan/wolverine. Because of strict security reasons I cannot use metal claws/blades, so im making them myself out of a few different things, (the very base is sharpened paper mache). Any ways, I was wondering if i'm the first young "female" cosplayer to do logan....?

A friend of me work on a Chamber Costume... here is a Picture of it ^^

What do you think ?
