View Full Version : Battle Royale from Tokyopop

Has anyone else read this?

It is easily the most disturbing, but thought-provoking manga I've ever come across. I became interested in the movie through BR cosplayers, so when I saw Tokyopop was publishing this I went for it.

Scary stuff, yet still probably accurate to how a group of teens would react in a situation like that.

What would you do if stuck on an island with your classmates and one goal: kill or be killed? Of course, tv cameras are rolling the entire time.

Personally, I'd make a break for the ocean and take myself out of competition. If I made it past the gunners, the collar would probably explode. Yeah, while I may joke about it, I couldn't bring myself to kill anyone.

I believe in self-defense. Its a war and if I cant get people to help me find a way off. Well, im gonna kill them. When a fellow classmate has an axe at my head, im not gonna die. I'd first take out all the people with the best weapons. I would probably snap their necks. Silent and painless. Also, I wouldn't be out in the open. I would just wait for them. But, I would negotiate first. Hopefully, I will not have to fight.

you're pretty scary, shaft... lol...
but yeah, i thought it was some cute, tame manga when i first saw the art... but... nope. haha it actually reminds me of Lord of the Flies a little bit ^^ i might go check it out. :D

It's out now? sweet. I finished the book a little while ago - actually am going to use it for the independant reading response on my English final, yay! It does remind me of Lord of the Flies, but in that one the goal isn't survival by everyone else's death.

I must pick this up now, does anyone one know if it came out before the movie? be interesting to compare like I did the movie and the book.

Battle Royale rules. It is a sick and twisted version of Lord of The Flies, but if your animal instinct is to survive, would you let that instict guide you, even if it means killing your friends and boyfriend/girlfriend?

I would kill everyone else. ^^

Unless I was with someone I cared about. And then we would find a way off of the island while killing everyone else.

Has anyone seen the movie?

I juat say the directors cut at Aniem North. The tape was screwed up though so I couldn't read the subtitles. :( I wasn't really shocked by most of what I saw because I had a pretty good idea what was going to be in it. I liked the movie (even though I couldn't read it) but I know quite a few people who wern't expecting tyhe violence and had to walk out.

i have defin. seen the movie. and i knew the concept was from the manga...so i was wondering when they would come out here. i did get the manga last week. i've read it over and over again. i love it! waiting so i can get the 2nd one

I've only seen trailers and clips from the movie and the book, but I haven't seen/read either. It looks gruesome, but the plotline's pretty interesting. I wonder what I'd do, myself. Am I really that annoyed of all the stupid people in my class? Decisions... I dunno maybe I'm with Avagoyle :p

I've read the novel, seen the movie, need to pick up vol 2 of the manga and I am trying to find, one way or another BR2. The second movie came out in Japan On July 5th.

It's really sad but I love this movie.

if I was put in that situation, I would problay kill to live but knowing my luck, I'd be the first one dead.....

i like how the manga goes into a lot more depth than the movie, but then i loved the movie way before i read the manga. if i was in that situation i would try to find a way out of it like mimura. but before that i would probably go out and kill the dangerous people first

well, I have the volumes 1 and 2 of the manga and It is more brutal than the movie, but it also shows you the motivations of some of the kids as well, plus it goes a lot into Shuuya's background and has more characterization. I did have a nightmare about it though, but man, it is worth the purchase. I can't wait for volume 3 to come out.

its all good but i still like the novel better.

I got volume 1 today luckily- Breantanos had vol 2 on the shelf but no vol 1 so I asked the guy if they had any in the back...they did. Likely would have bought vol 2 anyhow.

Quite disturbing but good, buying vol 2 when I can.

After reading the first volume of the manga (still need to get #2! I've seen it out, but haven't had time. And I've seen the Japanese version at the Dark Horse store on the Universal Studios citywalk in California...and didn't manage to buy it there. bah.), the novel, and have seen the movie itself, I think I prefer the novel overall. The depth it goes into explaining the characters, and even the wording of the scenes was very moving and believeable. The movie, however was still good, I reccommend it fully, for seeing the characters live and the carnage onscreen helped depict some of the pain and suffering felt by the living classmates. However, I just seemed to get nit-picky about the small things they changed from the novel to the movie, since I'd read it first.

Still waiting to see BR II. Seen trailers countless times...too bad they won't release it to the states. But there's always ebay, I suppose.

I like the character designs that the manga did based on the novel's descriptions.

What irks me about the manga is that I have to shell out $10 for eight chapters. I hope they don't string this out to over 10 volumes.

I thought the manga was great, since i had no idea what movie it was til i saw it at animazement.

In the first novel I was wondering where the Killer jrock star student was from the movie. In the second I found out that they replaced him with the Gangster kid (forgot his name). Can't wait til the third one comes out.

My only complaint is the BS script changes.

ie the parts about being a TV show.

oh yeah anyone else notice on the cover of the second Manga
Noriko 's mini Uzi isnt cocked(they fire from a open bolt hers is closed) . ie if she had to fire it wouldnt work.

I still have to get the manga. @_@

Loved the film though. It's up there with my Top 5. ^_^

If I were in Battle Royale... What I'd probably do is not kill anyone, but avoid being killed for as long as possible. o_O I just can't bring myself to take a life... Hell, I feel guilty when I squish roaches. x_x

07-28-2003, 06:24 PM
^lol! about the roaches.

well there's really nothing else u can do if your in battle royale.
the novel is defin. next on my list. I just can't wait till BR2
