View Full Version : What did you think of Anime North?

What was your overall impression of the con, and the hotel and stuff?

Overall, I think the con was great. Somewhat confusing, but great ^^'.

The hotel however...Well...It was awful. Our room had discoloured carpet(It was blue...In most places...And yellowish in a few random splotty places. My dad says someone likely puked there Xx.), uberly hard beds, a awful looking bathroom, and was completely crummy. I wrote 'Baka hotel' on the comments card. -Coughs-. I wasn't impressed at all.

The Con was good though. Minus the confusion that it seemed I wasn't the only person going through. It took me 15 minutes just to figure out which line was for the Registration. - -'. Then, I couldn't find where you had to go to get in line to watch the Masquerade at. I think they probably should have had signs..or something. I think YTV kind of destroyed the Con at some points. People were following the camera around too. The map thing they gave out was hard to read. Then again, I can't read maps at all, so yeah XD. Some of the dealer's tables were confusing too, especially the one that had the prices in US dollars. I may be an American, and I may have been paying with US money, but I prefer to see things in Canadian prices, then ask for the US. I ran out of US money and was using Canadian for most of the Con, so seeing stuff in US messed me up x.x.

For me though, the Gundam Wing VAs panel thing and the Masquerade were worth the whole con. That GW VA panel was hilarious. And the Masquerade was amusing. That MC was different though. I wonder if he really was some random guy they just told to do the job and he'd get pocky for it. And I wonder why everyone always says they watched Scooby Doo when they were a kid oO.

The Dealer's Room was okay, but I would have liked to see more CDs there. There was only a couple tables with CDs, and the selection wasn't too great. There wasn't many varieties of pocky there either. And some of the aisles were a bit to narrow. It didn't get uberly warm in there though, and they had a table for water and stuff, so I have to give them points on that.

The cosplayers were pretty good too. There was a wide variety of costumes, from a bunch of different series ^^. -Was Kouichi Kimura....Erm...Was the Kouichi Kimura cosplayer who had glasses o.o'-.

I still say that the Masquerade and the GW VA's were the best parts of the Con, and, that the hotel sucked. Sure, it looked great from the Lobby and Con-area, but the rooms were junk. We didn't give the room a very good rating at all.

Overall, I'd say that AN was a pretty good Con, and that I'd go to it again every year I can...Despite the fact I live in Ohio and have parents who dislike driving for a loong time Xx.

Sooo, what did you think of the Con?

I thought An was pretty good, and luckily i didnt have to stay in the hotel *phew*
I agree with the map being a lttle confusing... it took me over 10 minutes to try and figure out which direction the salon rooms were (finally i realized i had to go up, lol)
The MC at the masquerade was umm... bad, lol i cant manage saying anything nicer, he must have failed school because he could not read more than 2 words per minute, hahaha, it was pretty bad, but overall the masquerade was really good, i have to say i loved the giant pocky box!!!! That was great, if anyone got a picture of him/her pleeeaaaassseeeee post it :D:D

You do realize he was reading peoples' hand writing. He mentioned at least 10 times that people needed to learn to write. X.X And it looked like he was nervous and getting rather annoyed. I would have too. (What part of "no flash photography" don't people understand? T_T)

I thought he was funny and I know I'm going be the ONLY one who thinks that. -_- But it seems that every year peope complain about the MC and yet they don't volunteer themselves.

Hmm..remembering the comments I read about last years MC(s) it seems that peopel will never be happy with the MCs. But the MC was NOT the point of the masquerade. >_<

I though AN was really fun. ^____^ a LOT better than last year. The registration line-up was really confusing and yet again we (my group) failed to get a straight answer when asking about con locations. (like the masq line-up. -_-)

The highlight for me would be the GW VA panel. That was hilarious. That and the signing on Friday when David Kaye came up behind me in the line and picked me up because I was shorter then everyone who I was with 'trying to make me feel tall' o_O aparently I weigh 2 oz to him XD;;. and when Brian Drummond kissed me on the cheek. =^_^= and the fact that Scott McNeil was playing with the feathers on my Rikku costume for a while.

Then when the staff found a Crossplayer wearing a red wig, because Kirby Morrow wanted a red head. XD I emiditly starting jumping saying that I might be dying my hair red. Kirby just.. laughed though.

The masqerade was okay, I missed more then half of it. We went out for dinner around 7, thinking that we would have lots of time, service was really slow at Mr. Greeks. @_@ We wern't out untill 8:30, by the time we got back, we had already missed everyone's FFX-2. But, atleast we saw the Yaoi flavored Pocky >:3 yumm. I'd like to have that flavor.

Everyone that I saw from Cosplay.com had awsome costumes. @_@ my belt and pouch kept on falling off, so I couldn't wear them then on Saturday night the circle thing on the back of Rikku's ribbons fell off because my friend was playing with it. Not having enough time to fix it, so I went out-of-costume today (Sunday).

YTV was somewhat annoying. They asked me to go on in the morning for 'a little bit' which ended up being almost 2 hours. (More then 2 hours for Chobrat I think. You poor thing ;_;.) But atleast Chobrat was there to talk to and made it seem shorter. To bad we didn't get to get pictures though. Not only that but when I was in the dealers room meating up with Katie, then ended up making us do an interveiw with them as to why we where there. God, that DJ was so short.

I didn't stay at the hotel, scince I only live 20 mintues away. MC was slightly annoying after awhile. He was funny for a bit. But then it just got.. agrivating. And yes, the map had me too confused. @_@ I had to ask everyone where I was going.

I agree with you DMG, the hotel was awful, the bathrooms looked bad and small and the beds were hard and lumpy.
My highlights would have to be the GW panel. *anyone see a trend developing here* anyway it was hilarious! that and everyone got to see my painting of Treize i drew! that was so cool everyone oooed and awwwed when they saw it. then i had to go up there while David signed it. man i wish i had brought a cam corder! and your right Ryukka Brad was adorable.

Hello all,

Just a newbie on this forum checking out who's who and all that's wonderful about you ppl. I thnk Anime North is great not because of the events or location but because of the ppl who run it and attend. I've been to all the TO cons from day one and have helped out one way or another in all of them. AN in my opinion is a fan's con and thus gives its appeal as such.
Sooooo....in other words all you guys, gals and cosplayers rock!

Oh, I am a friend of the Yaoi-pocky...and under that great packaging is a smooth, tall, yaoi boy ready to satisfy your hunger.
I'm sure he won't mine getting fan mail. Let me know and I'll direct you to Glico's newest sensation.

After going to CNanime since day one, this was my first time at AN.

Pre-Reg was smooth and simple... I was an early bird so I got at the hotel at 11:30am on Friday and sat in the lobby until 1:30... pre-reg started early and 15mins later I had my badge and everything.

The dealers Room... was medicore. I bought a box of Pockey... and that was it. It wasn't really good (a few more tables could have been used) but I have seen alot worse.

The Masq was pretty entertaining, but thats usually because of the crowd. The MC was a first timer, so mistakes were bound to happen... and pronouncation isn't going to be perfect with people scribbling down their names. It was a good crowd, outside the people who decided to yell DURING the performances causing the cosplayers to stop their performance for the crowd to calm down and then continue (which in turn causes them to go over the 1min time and be cut off). Plus the people who couldn't understand what NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY ment.. someone behind me thought it was smart to yell out 'then turn of the lights'. Anyways all the costumes where well done and their were some excellent performances... From the crowd my section's usually antics were in full force with out 'Ninja Rap Chant'.... 'Gordie chants' (For Gordon Rose), Usual rowdiness that IMO helps the masq atmosphere.

Anyways I didn't get to meet any guests or go to any of the GOH stuff because Dani and his kick ass Para para Workshop was soo damn cool. Plus I got to be a backup dancer for when Dani and Dave were teaching YTV's Carlos (I want PJ Phil back) how to do 'BOOM BOOM FIRE'.

My Utena panel was good, but mostly due to the kick ass audience who where extremely knowledgable on the philosphy of Utena... I was on the panel, but the audience was the one who gave the boat load of info!

The video game tourneys were pretty cool... in Marvel Vs Capcom 2... I made it to the semis before being squashed baddly... and I wasn't able to enter then ChoChoboRacing (no clue how to spell it) due to a large amount of participants... although I did get to play it in the end:D

But the main focus of the weekend was the Battle Royale Comp... which is one of the main reasons I went... and I'm happy to say I performed well... and was able to nabb second place! I suggest to anyone who is thinking about it.. join it next year.

Anyways AN was wonderful... and I will be back next year.

Had a good time overall. Yeah, the hotel part of the centre is falling apart; there's word of some new hotel/con-centre in the construction works that might become the eventual home of AN. Plus the Regal changed management hands so things were a little different this time. Plus, a bigger centre means less having to put the con in two different areas (the ballrooms versus the salons).

The masq was well-run, and amazingly enough was under three hours; the video feed from the waiting room was bad, but better than none at all. The MC did a good first job, and yeah, the forms were unreadable in places, and he really did feel badly when he couldn't read it, but it really wasn't his fault. I was a stage catcher ninja (the one next to the exit side of the stage) and saw a bit of them beforehand and they were illegible. I think he got the crowd on side toward the end, but a few people in the audience were stupidly harsh.

Yeah, no flash photography sucks but it's for safety. That, and unless you're in the first few rows anyway you're likely to get squat on your pics anyway. There is a receiving row for photographers outside if you want costume pics, otherwise it's really not worth the bother and the hassle of irking the staff.

Anyway, I'll save more ranting for my site, and there are pics from the con already up there, plus more assorted rambling.

sour_milk: I got some good Yaoi Pocky pics, including one (sorta) unmasked. They'll be up sooner or later...

badum!^0^
i love regal. minus the fact that the layout is completely retarded and u need to walk like 10mins (30+ if ur in costume!) from the main lobby to the dealer's room/conference area LOL!

but i guess it was alrite

my first year as staff, so that was fun^_^
wht else..
FFX-2 kicked ass^0^ hard work paid off ^_____^
i only spent $19.50 <--no jokes LOOOL

i got to spend all weekend with a certain sexay seifer *coughhack* HAHA^_^

i...dunt really care about VA's and guests, so i cant coment about that.
And we were entry #8 of 86 in the masquerade, so i wouldnt know how long the wait was LOL X_X;

o! and i loved how we had the last minute ginormous Squaresoft team LOL^_^

I'm still sleepy.
But I had a blast as usual. Met up with my friends from out of province, won some awards in the Masq. (still kind of boggling over that...) didn't spend too much money, made a girl cry--unfortunatly not someone from YTV. Maybe Next year-- did four panels, hijacked two of them, and was generally disgustingly cute.

As for the hotel... bah. Bathrooms are for peeing and showering in, and carpets are to walk on.

The MC was great. It was his first year, because Gord doesn't want to do it anymore. He's not some random guy as whoever suggested it.
They should have given him a bio, but it wasn't his show. It was a show for the costumes. He'll learn how to control the crowd in time, and Hell, *I* can't even pronounce half the anime crap out there, so it isn't as if he should be expected to when he can't even READ the messy writing people give to him.
He's quite likely someone who will/would be a guest at some point.
Especially after some people's reactions to him. I know for Me, I plan on making it tradition to Hug him, because he was kind of cute.

Anime North has the Toughest Audience in NORTH AMERICA according to some of the backstage crew, so think about that... people have to give them some more credit.

...okay, i'm happy again...despite the load of homework i have to do today...not to mention studying...even though i'm so fatigued i might as well have a hangover...^_^

i'm too tired to think anything of AN right now. ^_^ But the photoshoots were messed, as usual...lol...it's a con tradition, i'm sure...we did get a big massive random shoot, though...so it's good that i ended up waiting several hours for the ccml/cosplay.com shoots to happen...eh heh....but the lobby was very hot...first the stupid leaks in the glass ceiling dripped on me and almost gave me the magical ability to do the splits on Friday...then they superheat the lobby on Saturday....x_x; deathly...

I didn't get to talk to Gord. T_T *sniff* *disappointed*

As far as I know, he's a comic artist of some sort, though I don't know the particulars. His name is Greg. Gave him a lift home afterward; he was kinda shell-shocked by it all, but was looking forward to seeing the video to see how everything looked in order to know what to work on for next time. I've got a nice pic of him and Gord which is somewhere in the photo queue of mine.

I got my Traditional Gord-Hug and chatted with him about this year's Masq. and upcoming Toronto trek.
He was happy with it, except for some of the idiots. I'll miss him, but I think the new MC will do well, once he gets some lessons in crowd control.

Mage, I'm glad you came to say Hello this year :) Your costumes were amazing and it was good to meet you in person.
Dan, I'm disapointed. Not one "magnum" joke from you this year!

The ones who were being obnoxious and being asses to the MC

stillvisions
05-20-2003, 03:17 PM
The ones who thought heckling with the same line over and over again was really clever, and who wouldn't let things slide on pronunciation/articulation after pointing it out repeatedly.

Not to mention the ones who needed audience members to tell them to shut up after a while.

(not a direct quote from Gord, but I was talking with both of them afterward and that sort of thing was regarded as uncalled for)

I'll say the same thign the tie idiots in teh audience that I did to tehm last year when they did it to Tristen and Lisa:

You want a "better job" done, you get your sorry ass up there and prenounce everythign properly, controll the crowd and have everything run perfectly; then you have the right to bitch at them.

God their only an MC they don't live off anime there just their to anounce who's comming up next.

phew... I was worried that Gordon was mad at JustinCredible and our friends... we were the ones in the center with the constant "Ninja Rap" and "Gordi we love you!" chants. Yeah, some *really* stupid stuff came from our section, but we were some of the first ones to tell people to shut up when they kept harping on about *the same damn thing* over and over again. I guess we're hypocrotes, but we were only trying to have some fun.... I hope no one's too mad at us...

I'm afraid because I have no idea who you are...

As for my take on AN2003, it was rather disappointing for me. It didn't seem quite as interesting as last year, though I can't exactly say why I feel that way. Probably because I missed the only event that really appealed to me, the mascot cosplay seminar. And because my escorts didn't show up, I only got to use my Pocky costume for a very short amount of time. I also didn't win anything with it, but did sell it for $40 afterwards. It almost recouperated the cost I sustained in making it. Almost. In any case, most people seemed to have enjoyed it, so that's good.

So the only thing I got of any real value out of this entire con was my Naruto necklace, the hopes that I've created a small fandom folklore about the Yaoi Pocky, and the satisfaction of knowing that I helped out the con by volunteering. However, volunteering also gave me first hand experience as to just how badly AN is organized.

Anyhoo, congratulations to those who won something at the masq, especially those friends who won multiple awards. You know who you are. See you Friday.

Nah, it wasn't the ninja stuff or the "gord we love you" bits; that's expected :)

It really came down to the people who weren't making it any easier on the MC. Enthusiasm and amusing running gags are fun; being repeatedly harsh on the MC isn't.

So no worries there. The ninja clan and Gord all appreciate the enthusiasm; it's sad that the same level of support wasn't always shown to Greg by the rest of the audience.

Greg's the artist behind Xeno's Arrow, a great independent comic. http://www.xenosarrow.com

Yeah, I don't envy him the MC job. It's tough and thankless, and I don't think any of us would do any better with people heckling us while we tried to read bad otaku handwriting. -.-;; I don't blame Gord for not wanting to handle that kind of stress anymore...

Hopefully next year we can arrange some kind of pre-reg thing for the masquerade, so at least *some* of the entries could be clearly typed...

Dude! If someone tried to tell us that we had the pronunciation wrong I would *so* go to the edge of the stage and call a random audience member up to the stage so that they could really say it. I think if we did it it would be all jokes and nonsense. There is NO WAY we'd be able to host a serious show. ^_^

i thought all the cosplayers looked great....
anime north 2k3 was my second anime con and it had the best cosplayers ive ever seen!
my first anime con was cn anime 2k2 and the cosplayers there werent so great (not as plentiful, neways)...
ive never cosplayed myself (only costumes ive put on were for halloween when i was a kid), i guess im not brave enough :)...but if i ever do cosplay, ill probably go as gatts from berserk, i havent seen anyone do that yet :)
masquarade was a lot of fun! a bit annoyin at times, but still great overall...
the mc was a bit monotone and he made me sleepy, but i think he did a good job readin everyones messy handwritin...
heh....i liked "gundam v0.1"...pretty clever, eh? good job to whoever did that...
i liked the squaresoft team too...
meh, all the cosplayers were great! i think that if uve got the guts to cosplay (i know i dont), then ur a great cosplayer! :)
all the pics u guys are postin are bringin back memories (even tho AN was a few days ago, nevertheless...) i remember seein all of u guys there...i didnt take pictures and i didnt come up to any of u guys, so u wont remember me :) (asian guy, sideburns, blah blah)
artists alley was pretty cool too! i thought it was much better than cn anime's artists alley...mainly because AN's artists alley is only ANIME...whereas cn anime's artists alley has some sci-fi guys in it...wow, the artists were amazing! drawin is a lil hobby of mine and, one day, i hope to be as good as they are!
sooo, i hope to see lots of cosplayers (includin u guys) at next year's AN and at cn anime this august! u wont see me tho, ill be in the background, shoppin and havin a good time  ...later ppl, take it ez

AN was great this year. costumes wise, i think there was a big decline from last year.
i didn't really meet many people this year, only Kia, but she found me first. ^-^

satuday we spent watching the matrix cus it got a little crowded. @_@

next year i'm gonna have to show Dolce up on our costumes. he got all the pics this year with his Chrono costume.

For CN we're gonna keep the same costumes tho, and work extra hard on Hellsing costumes for next AN. =D

AN03 was my first con ever and I enjoyed it. I didn't really know what to expect so I went with an open mind. I found the environment to be really friendly - I guess that's what happens when you throw a huge mass of people together that all have the passion for the same things :)

My only regret is that I didn't enter the Masquerade. I didn't like the idea of performing for a group of total strangers but after watching the show (and hating the MC) I realized I had freaked out over nothing. Oh well . . . next year ^_^

Anime North 2003 was my first official convention... I had previously attended Anime Expo 2002 but it wasn't quite it... it had videos and lots to buy but lacked the fan additives like panels.

I loved Anime North 2003. I had been planning it since August. Heck, I loved it so much I'm already planning for next years!

There were a number of fun things that I saw, like the Panel on Cosplay, Fandom Issues, and Conversational Japanese.

I wanted to go to the Gundam VA Autograph things but long lines are a heavy deterent...

I did see Scott McNeil hug that Vegeta/Zechs VA... and I caught it on tape ^_^;

Hmmm.... my room was fine, two double beds it was actually quite nice though the view wasn't much.

Uh... really good convention, I'm hoping to attend next year and hopefully cosplay ^_^

I had a great time kneeing Erilan in the crotch ^^
The rest of the con was pretty good too as I got to hang out with ALL MY FAVORITE PEOPLESES.

I go to the cons because of Cosplay,so I even when I had PLANNED to go to a few events I ended up forgetting all of them and just wandered around in costumes talking to other cosplayers and makin friends ^^;;

I accidentally caught Hikaru Midorikawa though first when he did a panel thingy <and got hsi autograph and a hug> and then again on sunday WE THUMB WARRED.I lost . ._.;

I was lucky with Hikaru; a friend pointed him out when he was just sitting in the lobby. I got a nice photo of him; it'll be on site with the event report pretty soon.

I should, because there are NO good pictures of me in it... but I think that costume's retired for a while. It wasn't that well made and I would have to do a LOT of work to fix it up if I want to wear it again any time soon. I think I have too many other costumes planned to do this year. But we'll see. :)
If I do, I'll let you know specifically so you can get some photos ^-^
I just have to make it better then the other one floating around. lol.

Weeee forgot to post something here.

*o*

AN was A LOT different from last year for me.
I did a lot more cosplay stuff rather then attending events, watching anime, and blowing money in the dealers roomXD It was great fun though!!! I hung out in the J-Rock room a lot,
which was a blast! and attenting in the Masq (which I wasn't on planning on doing) turned out to be wicked too!!! I also went to the J-Pop dance party, which I had never been to before,
fun times!!
XD I spent about 85% of the time taking photos *lol*

Thanks everyone for the great memories!!! *HUGS*

:bouncer: I just want to say a BIG THANKS to everyone who had positive things to say about Anime North this year!

I want to thank in particular those people who said supportive things about the Maquerade, Stage Ninjas, Greenroom Feed (We tried! We really did!), and in particular the new MC Greg Beetham

It was Greg's first time as MC and many, many of you were very understanding of that fact. I thank you for being gentlemen and ladies on that score. :) He is a great guy and had a deep desire to make it a good show for everyone. He may have seemed really quiet and low key but his intentions were not to detract from the real reason for being there, the cosplayers. I know many of you miss Gord Rose, but know that it took Gord more than 10 years to become as fluid an MC as he is now. Greg is finding his feet. I personally hope that Greg returns to Anime North after what could only be described as a somewhat harrowing and sometimes thankless experience.

:) Thank all of you who participated in the Masquerade and or volunteered in the Main Room during the masquerade. You make our favorite event happen. :)

Takuka-san: sorry you missed the Mascott Panel. Hopefully you can make it next year.

:) Cheers! ~ Kaijugal

Well, I just hope that Greg (and the rest of the Masq. and AN crew) knows how much support he/they DO have...
It's not always as easy to see, and downright thankless most of the time, but I know a lot of us appreciate the time and effort that goes into making AN one of the best cons out there.

Kia
06-20-2003, 12:38 AM
I agree with Kisa. I think alot of the hecklers from the masquerade started to do it for the attention they were getting. It became repeditive and by the end of the masq. it was very obvious that Greg was getting frustrated with those particular annoying audience members. I really hope that Greg can see past those who wouldn't gve him and chance and comes back for next year. ^_^

"Go ninja, Go ninja, Go!" ^_^

I think it has to go beyond Greg having to forgive the obnoxious idiots and learn crowd control. He shoudln't HAVE to learn to how control them like that.
It's up to us to be good audience members. Like the people who told other people to shut up when it got out of hand. Get it across to people that it isn't acceptable to be obnoxious f*cks. Jokes are fun. But being able to tell when to draw the line...

It means going to get security, or if you're working security to escort people out. I have no idea if people did this, I was backstage. But that's one solution I can think of. Stop the Show. Put on the lights, escort people out. Let the MC get back to show.
It's kind of draconic, but... I'd suspect it'd work. I would think it would only have to happen once, too.
Should it have to come to that? No. It shouldn't. Has it? Quite possibly.

I think people have forgotten the POINT of the Masq. To present, showcase and otherwise hopefully entertain people with the costumes/cosplayers. You're there, because people are willing to go up on stage FOR you
. If you don't want to be there, Leave. If you don't Like it, Leave. But no one has the right to wreck it for everyone else, because they don't like how the MC said something.

I should be the Iron-fisted dictator of a small island. ^_^ I think I'm cut out for that job. AND I'd hire Klingons for my Security. mmmm...dictatorship...

yes people being mean was bad
but one thing I would "really" appreciate would be someone that can actually pronounce the names of the shows, characters etc......
if the person isn't a fan of the stuff (god only knows why a non fan would be doing it) but if its not a fan then maybe taking time to read over the list again and again and ask the people backstage how top pronounce things and write it down so the can pronounce it.

That was my only beef, i think Greg made a great effort and people should not be rude and make comments, one of my friends was yelling things and i promptly told him to shutup, then there were some stupid kids behind me making fun of the clow card girls, which i thought was one of the best damn sets of costumes that I have ever seen! I told the kids where to stick it and informed them of my fist waiting after the show if their ignorance continued!

Basically i think rules should be stated before the show and enforced, if your caught yelling rude comments out you should be ejected from the "CON" not just the masq but the whole dang place, maybe that might shut the ignorant people up!

The pronunciation issue is one that has plauged every Anime North MC. <rueful laugh> I have great sympathy for them. They are all fans but even so cannot know everything. I've been watching since the early 70's and I still find myself often times saying "What the hell is that? I've never heard of that/it/him/her before." LOL!
The other problem facing any MC is the fact that you're in a roomful of fans who all pronounce the names of thier favorite shows and characters differently! It's quite a conundrum and I certainly wouldn't want to tell the 230 pound weightlifter in the front row dressed and Sakura that it's not pronounced "Sack oo rah!" <nervous giggle>
Your suggestion about talking to the contestants backstage is quite good and it has been done by the MC's in the past. (Usually Gord Rose in particular) Greg himself pointed out he would like to do that next year. THings for him were a bit rushed this year and with a masq of 70-odd groups of people, it's hard to talk to everyone.
We're all aware that learning the proununciation of the shows and characters is a problem. Hopefully Greg will be willing to return to Anime North again, wiser for the experience. With helpful cosplayers and anime fans he will learn more and more and only get better as we go along.

Thanks for your thoughts. :)

Heck, if my memory serves me correctly, even Gord doesn't get all the names right! People yell at him with corrections, but they still love him because many people are familliar with him (like the Gord Rose fan club ^_^). Greg is new and alot of people (I for one) didn't understand why Gord was a Stage Ninja and not being the actual host. But then again, people have the tendancy to make life alot harder for the new guy. AS for pronunciation, honestly, do you really think that *everyone* will be happy? Like previously mentioned, everyone seems to have their own ideas as to how to say things. Some are right, others are not and who can an MC, who most probably doesn't speak Japanese, decipher one pronunciation from another?

Hello all!

I just came across these forums and I must say that I am quite impressed with most of what I see here.

Now, while I am not a costumer by any stretch of the imagination (although I have competed before ... and won!) I would like to comment on a couple of points that were being discussed earlier. That's the subject of MCs and the performance of their tasks.

To put my comments in context, Greg did a fine job in my opinion. And he said that he had a blast doing it! He was exhausted afterwards ... but he had a good time.

The issue that many have expressed with pronuniciation is always a sticky one for an MC of an anime masquerade. I speak on this from a position of hosting not only AN's first honest-to-god masq (Let's set the wayback machine ....), but also as the MC for CNA's masq since it began. Like it has been my practice, Greg did attempt to speak to as many of the conestants as he could prior to the show. The difficulty arises in the following scenario:

Costumer Backstage : "It's pronounced TO-MAY-TO!"

Audience Member Out Front(shouted at the top of their lungs) : "It's pronounced TO=MAH-TO!"

So ... which one would you listen to? ;) I have even experienced the situation where two contestants backstage have two different pronunciations for the same costume. And the audience has a third!!!

(Oh yes ... and some of the handwriting is awful!)

Heckling ... the apparent bane to any MC's existence! Playing with an audience can be fun. I can tell you that my AN Stage Ninja team all want to return because of the response they receive from the audience!:D But the MC has a hard enough task anyway. Why make it more difficult for him to keep the show moving smoothly?

My expereince has been that this is an indicator of the "15 Minutes of Fame" idea. These people want to use others' time in the spotlight to address their own petty issues. (Can you guess that they get no sympathy from me?:p )

Another aspect of this is usually the maturity of the audience within the hobby itself. This may be a hard concept to grasp and I hope I can explain what I mean by it well enough. Please notice that I did NOT say "the level of maturity of the individuals in the audience", although this is a somewhat contributing factor.

What I mean is that the audience needs to police itself ... in other words, apply the Golden Rule. I have always been the first to admit that audiences that are heavily seeded with anime fans are the most enthusiastic and energetic of crowds that I've worked for. That doesn't mean that they can't be unruly. Fortunately, as time has gone on I have begun to see more of you riding herd on the unfortunate few that disrupt your enjoyment of the show. Good on you!!!!

... But please be aware, this will take time. The AN audience has grown way too fast for it to be at the level of other, more established conventions. But I have no doubt, from the posts I've seen in this forum and the words I hear from your lips when I talk to you, that it will happen!:)

You could also try to remind them that they are actually ruining the costumers attempt to entertain them for a minute or so with something that has been a labour of love ... and that the costumer is up on stage baring their soul, and the heckler isn't.

Lastly, (I bet you all thought I'd never get here, eh?) I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words and comments. I have found that any part of this event can be thankless work (as I apparently now lovingly referred to as "the unofficial con pervert" ... thanks to my "biggest fan" last year) and any positive comments to the volunteers and staff are usually welcomed.

I will do my best to pass on to all my ninjas your great responses ... and I know I speak for them all when I say they loved the "Go Ninjas!" chanting.

Gord

hey there Gord! its good to see ya here.

Ah the allmighty heckling, you explained its issues very well.
As note from an audianece member that has had a heckler sitting next to me ear, I have learnt that after saying please stop to them, and reminding them what they are doing is rude, the first laugh they get from someone else after making their rude comment and fuels the flame and all of a sudden they think they are the kings of the show.

I think that maybe some rules could be set in place about comments being made and maybe more sequrity being there, and when someone makes a rude comment outloud then the get thrown out of the masq. I feel really sorry when they heckle the mc but when the heckle the cosplayer that is taking the effort to do a good performance up on stage and then in the middle of their scene some jerk off, immature person makes a comment, that can ruin it for them and might make them not return the next year. Definatley the fans need to try to police things as best they can but when i have tried, it has done nothing. A set rule about heckling and punishment for first offence should clear up the majority of these tards.

This is just a suggestion and observation, i personally go to enjoy the show, pronounciation is no matter to me cus i recognize most costumes and characters. I hope Greg returns and exacts revenge on those that do not have faith in him.

and the stage ninja thing was killer, look forward to it next year

You have some very good points. And some cons are already ejecting excessive troublemakers. There are some logistic and management issues with this but we can talk more about that offline (next time you see me at a con!).

And as for you trying to get the message across and them not responding ... have patience. Your example, and those of others doing the same thing, will show them that the comunity will no longer tolerate this behaviour as socially acceptable. But it will take some time to sink in.:D

Remember: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

So, here's my question (Since it seems like we're all in agreement about the trouble-makers being silenced ;) ) Will Greg be coming back to Host AN's Masq? Or other Masqs in the future?
I would have liked to meet/talk with him and thanked him personally and extracted Hugs for a job well done...

And since you'll be taking a break from the MC thing, will you keep on helping out Ninja-style, or kick back and enjoy the show from now on?

I'm pretty sure Greg might be available next year (it's the director's decision as to who they ask to be MC) ... I know he had a fun time and would probably be willing. (Especially if it mean hugs & squeezes from a cutie like yourself, Kisa;) )

Kaijugal should be able to pass on your - um - "well wishes" to him without much difficulty.

As for me, if they ask me back I might help out. The ninja crew that worked with me this year was great and most are very keen to do it again next year! We'll just have to wait and see.:D

OMG!!!!! It's GORDIE!!!!!!
.... did I ever tell you that I love you?? ^_^

I'm glad to hear that Greg had a "good" time. I know that if it had been me up there getting heckled at I probably just would have jumped off the stage and attacked the crowd..... only to be escorted off my con security. .... alright, so I have problems...
I'm sure as the crowd gets to know him they will hopefully easy up a bit... I hope... ^_^
If needs be I would volunteer to be part of con security for the masq, just to stop the hecklers. I may be realtivly small, but trust me when I say I'll put the hecklers in their place. ^_^

And finally:
"Go Ninja, Go Ninja, Go!" ^_^ and no Gordie, there were no drugs involved! ^_^

Kia <- Unofficial Vice-President of the Stage Ninja Fan Club

P.S. Gordie, you "biggest fan" is around here somewhere. ^_^

Really? Who's the Unofficial President? ;)

I'll also make sure to pass on to the team that they have a fan club!

P.S. Gordie, you "biggest fan" is around here somewhere. ^_^

(Oops! I didn't think that the reference was that well known!) Really? LOL! You know, I've never actually talked to her ... people keep saying she is around and telling me I just missed her but I never see her face-to-face. One of these days I'd actually like to meet her.

Perfect!! I can guarantee at least one Hug per Masq. And can probably arrange at least four if/when he comes back!
And we're all Legal, so no worries about us being jailbait to him ;)

Or you know... 'thanks' will work too. We're flexible. *nods*

wheee!

Now now. You've been getting hugs too.
You're the one who started that tradition from what I can remember. At least my group of con-friends.
I've no idea about MCs in the past...

hum.... well... I was thinking about your *other* biggest fan...if you recall a certain "incident" from CN2002 with a certain over enthusiastic gentleman who couldn't keep his lips off you. ^_^ I know for sure that he's around here somewhere.

I think the Unofficial President is JustinCredible, he came up with the chant. ^_^

Gord,
its nice to see your text on these forums. Also I would like to thank you for the excellent work you have done as both a ninja and an MC.

I tired to tell you this in person, but you were quite busy at AN doing you Ninja duties and each time I heard you were near it seems you'd always 'Pokaroo-me' (As I would arrive to where you were to find out that you had left and I had missed you).

So from all of the people I have dragged to CN, and those who have dragged me to AN ;) (it didn't require that much effort), thank you for making the con experience even more special.

I hope soon I have the distinct honour of having you announce my first cosplay experience!

Okay.... now onto buisness

Kia,
I believe the biggest fan you are refering to isn't the 'biggest fan' they're are thinking of... which is a shame because he will be so disappointed. Since that passionate kiss at CN he's been talking about meeting Mr. Rose again... 'Gordie this and Gordie that'.

EDIT: "I think the Unofficial President is JustinCredible, he came up with the chant."

You're making me blush.....

 True, I know. It's just that - at my age - I get jealous of the younger fellas! LOL!

As for previous MCs ... you'd pretty well have to go back 14 years (except for AN after their first masq), so I'm just going to say:

Thanks for the hugs, Kisa!!!! You and your friends always make me smile!

ROTFLMAO!!! ^_^ If I were you Gordie, I'd watch out to make sure you don't get, ahem, *acosted* at CN this year.... even though the ninja chanting section will be considerably smaller, but oh well, they'll make do. ^_^

I loved anime north it was the most fun I've had in a long time,
I was scared half to death by a drunken Vash cosplayer, Scott McNeil kissed my hand, Kirby took my friends Sharpie, I lost 2 of 3 duels at the yu-gi-oh tournament, and Brad said I was cute.... indeed the most fun I've ever had in a looooong time!

As long as the 'ask-first' policy is followed...
Saves a knee to the groin. ^_^
Some people aren't touchy-friendly with strangers, and really don't like the attention.
Just something to keep in mind.

"Stop making comments. I bet you dont have the guts to come up and do anything about it!" (something along those lines!)

All in good fun though Gordie! You're the best!
