Since the old Tales of thread vanished, I thought I would start a new one since it seems like there are many out there that still need help with cosplays from the series (and my self actually). This thread will contain help from the Tales of series, which includes titles such as Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Symphonia, etc...

I am planning on cosplaying long-haired Luke and I'm having issues with severla things about the character.

1. Luke's Wig. I plan on styling the wig my self, but I have a few problems with it.

a. What is the true color of his hair?
b. Is there any wig websites that you recommend getting the wig from?

2. Luke's sword. I am not good at making props, but I actually want to attempt to make it since it doesn't seem too difficult. Any suggestions on how to make it? I'm not sure what materials to make it out of.

3. Luke's gloves. I've never made a successful pair of gloves before for cosplay, so this is going to be challenging. Does anyone have a tutorial online somewhere for his gloves or any short gloves in general?

I think that's it for now. Thanks for the help in advance.

Good call on starting a new thread. =) I can't wait to see your Luke cosplay. <3

I know that there are patterns for making gloves... I actually have one *somewhere* but I haven't used it yet. If I can find it I'll tell you what it is and if it works.

The sword... I guess you could make it with almost anything, depending on how heavy and durable you want it to be. Maybe carve it from the sturdy pink foam (forgot what it's called) or find some wood tools and saw it from wood, sanding it down to be the perfect shape.

I was thinking about cosplaying as Stahn Aileron from Tales of Destiny. He's a cool character after all. It'll be fun.

I will, I will, I WILL cosplay Meredy from Tales of Destiny 2 one of these days. And not that crappy little tunic, either - I want to make her fluffy dress from Celestia ^.^

As for Luke, let's see:

1) His hair looks like a mild red (not quite ripe tomato, if that makes sense) with the tips fading to a peachy color. The easiest way to get the color you want is to buy a white wig and dye the color yourself. Here's a great thread for dying with ink: http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=57484 Or you could resort to sharpies.
In any case, Amphigory has some good wigs, although price is just as expensive as Cosworx. I prefer to Ebay my wigs, especially from Seconds-Please: http://stores.ebay.com/SECONDS-PLEASE-WIGS_Colorful-Anime-Cosplay-Wigs_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ7QQftidZ2QQtZkm
This seller has some great, cheap wigs, as well: http://stores.ebay.com/Designer-Wigs-and-Color-Wigs_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm

2) You can either carve the sword out of pink insulation foam or wood, then seal with polyurethane (only sealer for wood), bondo, fiberglass, Wonderflex, etc. If you're lucky, you can find a cheap plastic prop blade and just make the hilt. http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=95725
Or, if you're cheap like me, try using cardboard! http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=76828

3) Gloves - here are the 3 best online tutorials:
http://sew-ing.com/make/gloves.html
http://www.glove.org/myfirstgloves.php
http://www.stretchy.org/catsuit/extras/gloves/complex.html

Since Luke's gloves only come up to his knuckles, you don't have to worry about sewing the fingers on. Just trace the pattern around your hand and end it at the part of your hand where the fingers stem from the palm. You can then add the bias tape/trim around the top of the glove. Same goes for the thumb, just make sure to make it a little roomy. Stretchy material like spandex, jersey and other knits, and lycra work best.

Actually, I was looking at the first store for Luke's wigs. I actually like alot of the wigs they sell in that store on Ebay. Let alone they are really reasonable. Do you know if they are thick? Or ever bought from them?

Also, all the advice you've given was rather helpful. I hope to get started on Luke within the next couple of weeks.

Seconds-Please is on my favorites list ^.^ I bought my Eirika and Feena wigs from her, and my newest yet-to-be-revealed cosplay. I did sew 2 wigs together for both Eirika and Feena, because they have such voluminous hair (the blue wig in that tutorial I wrote is Eirika's).

I have not bought from Designer Wigs, but I know some people who have and really like their products.

Nope, the cons I have planned are the following:

Youma, Ohayo, A & G Ohio, Tekkosho, ACen, AX (big possibility), Otakon and Ikasu Con for the following year. I may add a few more in, depending on fundage though.

ooh a new tales thread.

im cosplaying as tabatha from tales of symphonia and was wondering if anyone might be able to recommend a wig other then cosworx ^^; i wont be sewing this and wearing it till after halloween since im busy with a costume for that occasion as well, however ill most definitely post pictures of my tabatha since there a severe lack of cosplayers of her...she deserves to be done some justice

@kalajessta
ah the question always raised by tales games in particular (or so it seems) what color is their hair truly? xD im afraid i cant help you there

Too bad you're not going to Sugoi, Kala, my friends and I are putting together a decent size Abyss group for the con (our Luke is doing short hair version, though.)

I've got my own wig problems too. I'm pretty much sure of everything EXCEPT the wigs for our Ion and Sync- wigs in that shade of green just aren't MADE, and I don't want to buy ones that are bright and saturated, so I've been digging around for a dark grey wig on cosworx that I can dye with the FW method.

The Amanda in color 44 is what I've tentatively settled on, since they're BOTH getting hacked, caulked, and styled to hell anyway, but I'm a tad afraid that since it's a brown-grey, instead of a black-grey, it'll throw off the color >< Opinions?

I was going to say something about Luke's gloves, but Fire Lily beat me to it XD. They shouldn't be that bad.

I do so adore cosworx, and since at this point we're ordering six wigs, a couple wig heads, plus tons of bobby pins and wig caps, it's just better to order all at once and save on some shipping XD

Speaking of, for our short-haired luke, I think I was going to get the Linda S in Henna Red and style it shorter, if that helps any Kala.

Oooh, I'll be going to Sugoicon. Hopefully my group will also be from Tales of the Abyss, I'm planning on Natalia, my brother is going to be the big version of Tokunaga, and my older daughter is going to be Anise. We might have a Jade if she gets her stuff done, but my younger daughter is going to be from Tales of Mobile (Tales of Tactics) as Rukku, Rukko? Luke? I don't know her name, but she's this cute little thing with pink hair.

It's too close to Youma Con, that I can't request off the time for work. I'll be wearing Luke again at Ohayo Con, that's for sure, and I may have a few friends be there as well that will be wearing their Tales of cosplays.

But I've finally started on Genis. He's more of a pain in the butt then most of my other Tales of cosplays, but then again, all Tales of characters are a pain.

Oh excellent, you've mostly got characters we aren't doing XD. I'll probably start a photoshoot thread for it on the sugoicon forums, just because I'm going to be ridiculously busy the whole con and it's going to be hard pinning me down long enough for a big shoot if I don't already have one planned XD.

<.< hehe, our guy is totally up for being poked. I've already told him he's getting poked by me, but an Anise would just double the fun!

I just decided that I AM going to cosplay Luke for sure (the short-haired version), I'm just not sure when exactly XD; I'd like to have him done by ACen or MTAC, but I've got three other costumes I have to finish before I start on Luke. Does anyone here go to either one of those cons out of curiosity?

I go to ACen. I'm not sure what Tales of cosplay I'm taking there. Most likely Genis and possibly a ToA cosplay of mine... I'm hoping to get ToF school outfit Guy or Luke done by then. Maybe even Kratos from ToS, but ACen is far down the list for me of what to plan, so who knows what I'll bring.

I might be going to Acen this year, but I don't know if I'm bringing my Jade- it wouldn't be that hard to change into it for a photoshoot, of course, but I was thinking about doing some Persona 3 cosplay and maybe Air Gear (or dragging Azel with me in the hopes I'll find more Magna Carta cosplayers)

...I have a feeling I'll have a car full up with costumes if I manage to go to Acen XD

I wish I could get around to all these cons, my next one isn't until Anime Boston in March...

I will be cosplaying Tear's Cool Chick costume there, though! I've already started making the pants for it, although I still have no idea how to make that vest/coat thing she wears...

After that, I don't think my next con comes until Otakon again. There, I'm planning on Arietta's 2nd costume, and Reala from Destiny II. (That wig I have already, and I guess I can use my Lacus wig for Arietta. Somehow.)

If anyone has an idea on how to make that coat for Tear, I'm all ears...

Alright! Tales cosplayers! :toothy:

This may have been asked already, but I didn't really bother to go through all of the posts *is lazy*; is anyone here going to Oni-con in Houston, TX?

Seriously, I keep hearing of all of these Tales gatherings, but they're some four or five states away, or on dates that I'm already busy. I'ts depressing. :bigcry:

Anyway, though quite the newb (I comission my cosplay. Again, lazy.) I cosplay both Arche (ToP) and Luke (ToA). Don't ask how that works personality and looks wise, it just does. <.< >.>

I do have one question: I actually wanted to dye my hair (which is naturally a medium brown) Luke's color for Oni-con. I know of some decent temporary dye that I've used for the red color before, but I'm stumped on that whole gradiant/fade to peachy yellow thing that it does. Any ideas that won't damange my hair terribly (I've sortof vain...)?

I think Yuan, who is a half elf, has round ears but other half elves such as some of the Cardinals have short, tapered ears. You'd probably need to make a decision based on that, but I'd think that he has tapered ears.

I did the Cool Girl outfit for AX 07, so you can look at my pictures of it and see if you'd like my suggestions on putting it together and what I did. I'm missing the purple trim along the sides, but that's simple enough to add. It's also hard to see the lace and ribbon that I added to the center for the detail work, but it's there.

Hoping to maybe do Ion for NYAF 07, if I can actually get it done (I'm currently in NY, and my 3/4-finished costume is in CA until Thanksgiving, and the con is a week or so after that)

I really should try to go to more Texas cons, it's not extreeeemely far for me (no where near as far as Marlyand at least!) But I don't think I am this year. D:

Hmm, well for the hair you could try asking about it in the hair/makeup forums. I don't know too much about temporary hair dye, the folks over there might be able to help with that. :>

Okay, so I started my friends' Tear and Dist outfits, and oh man. ...That was something. XD; Seriously, what was Dist thinking? I can imagine him just hunched over his desk sewing that crazy flower collar himself, because no stylist in their right mind would make something so against the laws of physics. XD

Oh yes, this is a Tales thread *ahem* Anyway. I have an Asch cosplay, and I managed to get some of my friends interested in ToA *waves to Lothlin XDD* so I'm so excited to have a decent group for the upcoming cons. Asch is my first completed cosplay (aside from the wig I still need to make) and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Yeah, I know I'm late posting in this thread. >< Due to the persistent urging of certain...people....I will be joining a crazy Tales of Legendia group as Chloe for Otakon 2008, along with Meredy from Tales of Eternia. Meredy will be done for Katsucon 2008, but I have to bring her back since we will most likely have all the main characters from Eternia at Otakon. Anise from Abyss will probably be done for Katsucon as well, but not her default outfit. Most likely it will be that battle outfit that you can get for her. ^^;

Aw man, I wish I could go to Otakon, I would love to see your Chopin cosplay, Zelos_W! I plan to cosplay him in the future as well, but I don't have time to do such detailed cosplay at the moment. X3

Eternal Sonata cosplayers unite! Hehe.

Now, back on topic:
It seems my TotA group it going to be quite... Strange >D; It's going to consist of Ion, Sync, Van, and either Jade or Dist >D;

Yeah, I know I'm late posting in this thread. >< Due to the persistent urging of certain...people....I will be joining a crazy Tales of Legendia group as Chloe for Otakon 2008, along with Meredy from Tales of Eternia. Meredy will be done for Katsucon 2008, but I have to bring her back since we will most likely have all the main characters from Eternia at Otakon. Anise from Abyss will probably be done for Katsucon as well, but not her default outfit. Most likely it will be that battle outfit that you can get for her. ^^;

Heck yeah Tales of Legendia! XD If only you could come to Fanime, my friends are doing Shirley, Grune, and maybe Jay too. *u*

I have a question for all you Tales fans-

This is driving me nuts. Ion's hair: Why has every cosplayer gone for green? Is there official art I'm missing, or a manga that's considered absolute? Because I'm playing the game, and I've looked at the art, and Ion's hair is grey/black, with maybe a hint of green tint, but certainly not emerled or lake green, which is what most people use.
Considering I may be cosplaying him, I keep looking at black wigs- but the 'everyone else' issue really makes me wonder if I have it wrong....

It's a dark-grayish-green. Thus people use green because it stands out more. The Ion in my group is going to use a Jade-color wig. In my opinion anyway.

It could be taken as black or green. Just as dark-purple can be used for black.

That makes sense. And searching tells me that green wigs really only come in one shade, so it's feasible for people to go for the brighter tone. I think I'll stick with the black though. ^_^

You might be able to go over the wig with a green sharpie just to get the green tint? I've never tried tinting wigs though, just coloring from white to something else XD; But it sounds like it could work...

One of the reasons is probably just availability. Dark green is a much more common color in wigs than dark grey with sage green tints (Oh wouldn't that be nice and convenient *o*) I think it also depends on personal interpretation. I've seen fanart of Ion with actual dark green hair, not that integrated kind of mix. So maybe preference has to do with it too? :>

I don't think that would work too well on a black wig though D: there's no way to lighten a wig, and black is about as dark as you can get xD Although I've heard of people using black sharpie on dark blue and dark green to get that effect.

I've actually been going through hell trying to dye a wig for Ion (for some freaking reason I can't get the dye to coat it evenly. I'm just going to resort to a bowl and swish it around, spray bottles apparantly hate me.) I just wasn't happy at all with any of the green wigs that I could find.

But, anyway, in my first attempt, the bit of the wig that DID come out nicely looked damn nice for him. I'm using an Angela 750 in color #51 (the wig is getting chopped up so much once I get the dye to take properly XD), and using FW ink in Sap Green. I'll post pictures once I get it dried and brushed out.

I'm going to end up doing the same thing for Sync when my roomie gets around to order her wig. I just hope I don't run out of ink, I've gone over it enough that I've used most of the bottle. ><

I know I'm going to try for Ion for next year. Hopefully by AN. I know I'll be lugging my Philia Felice (ToD) and Jay (ToL) to some of the cons next year as well, seeing as I wanna fix some things to both.

So, uuuhh, who is invading Katsucon? It's coming up quickly and I know a few people I talked to at this past Otakon was talking about another gathering.

Lothlin

I think there's more concept art of Asch than Sync- I know our group's Asch has basically every piece of art and concept imaginable from the series, maybe I could poke her into posting some of the Asch stuff (Heck, I know she reads this thread, she'll probably see it herself. )

You can always go look at the in-game character viewer.

I choose green partially for when I cosplayed Ion because it matches the outfit well, let alone it's easy to find. Here's a pic of when I wore Ion at Otakon this year:

One, it's mostly with the trim and then the "belt-like" objects on his gloves on his glove. I don't know if I should attach it or not or what not is going on with it.

Lothlin

*pulls up reference photos*

Huh. As far as I can tell, there's only one real connection point for the belt-things- it's near the buckle, on the thumb side of the gloves. The rest of it just kind of poofs out with not much in the way of attachment- Maybe put some sort of stiffener, interfacing, whatever in the belt-bit, attach it near the buckle, and just make both sides so you can loosen them or tighten them like a belt? That's probably how they are, it looks like the right cuff is looser than the left cuff.

The trim is just edging though, unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying.

Oh man, all things considered, I've been having worse luck with the bootcovers for Jade than the gloves! The boot covers were rather easy for me suprisingly. But I also had to use safety pins to keep them up. I wish there was an easier way for boot covers. Funny thing is, if you study the picture, Jade actually have boot covers. I found that amusing when I had to make them since I didn't know at the time if I should of invested in tall boots or make boot covers.

Thankfully Genis has small, tiny ones that I don't have to worry about too much. The rest of his costume will be a pain in the butt though.

Lothlin
10-14-2007, 11:58 PM
Yeah. I think I'm going to just cave and hide a safety pin in them, just to keep them from sliding while I walk. If my pants were tighter they might actually stay up by their lonesome, but my pants are JUST loose enough that the give in them makes the covers just slide right down. And no one will see the pins, so, it's all good XD

I do love that his bootcovers do look like cloth. Saves having to interface the crap out of the whole bloody thing XD

Yeah, also a trick that might help is to put elastic in the brown parts too on top. That helped keep them up for the majority of it, but safety pins are always a plus for security.

Oh geeze, I know what you mean, I absolutely hated making Jade's boot covers. And afterwards I wasn't satisfied with them, so I just recently remade them and that was a pain too. x_x But if I could offer some advice, if you're using safety pins, be sure to give yourself enough slack! I used that method and I couldn't bend my knees very far without the fear of them popping off or ripping the tops of my boot covers or my pants. x_o

You could try sewing a strip of elastic around the inside so that it fits snugly against your thigh? I was going to use that method the second time, but my change of fabric stays up on the new pants much better.

I've been working on my friend's Tear cosplay so she could get in on this Tales fiasco with me. XD I'm trying to finish it by Halloween at least. Does anyone have any suggestions on how one would style a wig for Sync? I've never style a wig before so I don't even know the right tools to use and whatnot, so its definitely going to be a challenge ^^;

I think I'm going to go ahead and get this wig to at least start as a base:

http://cgi.ebay.com/PW167-Lake-Green-Medium-Spike-Cosplay-Party-Hair-Wig_W0QQitemZ140166628962QQihZ004QQcategoryZ60188Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And I've ordered from that seller before.. the red wig I bought was nice, just a little thin. But the second wig I bought was shorter and ended up not really fitting my head that well. So I'm a little concerned with that happening again.

If anyone has any suggestions on wig also, that'd be helpful. But I'm not looking to spend TOO much on it.. I just bought a wig for $40 after all and now I'm kicking myself for it :P (cosplaying on just a waitresses salary suuuuucks)

I think my roomate is going to probably turn it upside down and use a ton of caulk and hairspray on it. Though beyond that, I don't know, she gets to take care of the ultra-spikey ones.

I'd be worried about getting a wig that's too short for Sync, since there is a lot of long hair on his head. Better to have to cut some off than not have enough.

I'm not the best at doing spikes, it's just what my roomie said she was going to do ;p But for Arietta, Ion, and Jade? Steamer + a little hairspray is going to take me a long way ^^

Well, there's always the options of buying a pack of matching extensions and just adding them in to help with the length. That might work. ^^

I would say to use black spandex (like the type they make swimsuits out of) and a boot covers tutorial. Like Fire Lily said, that's probably the best bet and there are tutorials scattered through the forums. I think one of the Legend of Zelda cosplay threads actually had one listed, but a quick search would help too. :] The belts should help to keep it stable around your thighs, and it even looks like she has some garter-esque things attatched to the tops. As for the pink lining, I'd go for bias tape and some iron heat 'n bond stuff. 8D

Alright, I must brag, I just got my hair dyed long-haired Luke style this afternoon, and it came out Fon-tastsically! :bigtu:
My hairdresser seemed skeptical when I told her what I wanted done, at first, but afterwards she was so impressed she made some other stylists at the salon come see. =^_^= The trick was doing it with more natural shades of red to fade into the orangy-peachy-blonde-ness.

I'll post pics after Oni-con!

XD I just made the pattern for Annise's cloak. I think I'm getting better at building my own patterns. I'm also building a test for a backpack version of Tokinaga. 0,o The full sized Mascot version is in the planning stages. I got a year to make a Tear, Annise, Tokunaga, and Luke costume.

I'll be cosplaying Anise for a con in February. I'm going to see if I can get some fabric for Tokunaga tonight, so I can at least get a head start. :3

I'm just having trouble figuring out what I want to do for the design on her cloak. My friend suggested using fabric paint, but I'm afraid that it'll look cheesy. What do you guys think?

Also, the shoes. x_x If anyone has made the shoes, please tell me how. XD

I'm making an Anise cosplay for my younger sister- it's not all finished yet, but maybe I can help a little...

I did use a fabric paint for the cloak, but I think it came out pretty good. I can try to get some pictures of it, so you can decide if you want to try it. I can tell you the brand of paint I used, in that case. My only issue with it is that in most pictures of Anise I've seen, the design is dark purple, whereas I had to use black paint. But I don't think it's THAT much of a problem.

The shoes, I have not done yet. But I'm thinking about using something stiff but somewhat flexible (like maybe pleather...) to make shoe covers from, and then strap them around my sister's maryjane shoes with elastic or something.

I don't have to worry about Tokunaga, because I got one of those official ones last winter, and I'm letting my sis borrow it. She'd better not lose it...

Pictures would be lovely. <3 I'm just worried about the design not matching up well with the trim, though I suppose I could always paint over it if I needed. Did you use any interfacing in the cloak? It looks stiff in most of the reference photos I've found, so I'm thinking of using some lightweight interfacing in it.

I'd like to see how your shoes turn out once you make them. O: Thank you for the help!

sorry this is such a horrible picture, i'll try to take another one of my shoes individually...>__<
but here is how my shoes looked like when i wore them
http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1231978
Basically, I got some slippers and glued some black fabric onto the top. Then got some brown foamy stuff and cut it out in the shape so that when i glued it onto the slipper it would stick up. Same thing with the small back part of her shoe too. So yeah, Thats basically how i made mine. They're pretty flexible and i've worn mine and even did HHY in them and they're still in pretty good shape ^^

Yes, there is a layer of fusible interfacing in the cloak I made, along with a lining in a dark maroon color. It works pretty well. I used black ribbon for the trim, so I think it matches ok. As for pics, I'll get them as soon as I can, probably in the next couple days.

Thank you both! I just have two more questions. : D;

I haven't been able to find very good refs of Anise and Tokunaga, so I can't tell. Are her sleeves attached to the side of her dress with a hole at the top to show her shoulders, or are they separate from the dress? And what does Tokunaga's back look like? Is there the same stitching like on the front of its face? If anyone could provide me with some good refs (especially of the back), that would be highly appreciated. D:

Also, the belt! How did you manage to make that? I was thinking of prodding around in Goodwill for it at first, but now that I take another look, I doubt I'll be able to find anything like it.

Lothlin
10-22-2007, 04:46 PM
I'm surprised you haven't found refs, there are very detailed ref pics for all of the party characters, along with the ingame character viewer.

http://tou.planets.gamespy.com/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=42&pos=21

There's an excellent Anise one, and there's more on that site- I've been leaning on it so heavily for reference pictures, since our group is so big.

And from that... it looks like Anise doesn't even wear a belt. It's a small dagger in a sheath. Dunno about the sleeves though, I haven't really been paying much attention to Anise's design, since our group doesn't have one (alas)

AkinaSumora
10-22-2007, 05:00 PM
I've seen both versions made into cosplay, sleeves attached and separate. But I favor the attached version, and that's what I made my sister. The dress was made sleeveless, and I sewed the sleeves separately. Then I sewed them to the armholes of the dress, in about a 2-inch seam.

To be honest, I haven't even played the game. XD;; I just picked it up today so I wouldn't look like an idiot in my cosplay group, I only know the characters by means of people that -have- played it and much fanart on DA.

Thank you very much for that, though! (I always thought it was a belt, augh, curse front-facing pictures)

In the game Anise has a belt, but in pictures she doesnt. Its very weird...But yeah, I'm pretty sure that her sleeves arent attached. I think I checked in the game a while back and noticed that they werent attached. Tho, I think it might be easier to attach them or put elastic in them...They tend to get very annoying...

For Tokunaga's stitches, he has one "X" stitch for his nose, and the rest are alternating diagnal stitches all the way to the back. I'm pretty sure that there are stitches on the ears as well as the arms and legs too :3 Well, thats how I did mine XD;; not sure if its entirely correct, but its the best i could do with the reference pics.

Heh, just realized we have a new Tales thread...^^

I've cosplayed Anise for TOA and I plan to make a Mithos from TOS cosplay, hopefully sometime in '08. I would also really love to make some of Anise's alternative outfits.

And also for the Anise questions, I used fabric paint for my cape, making a mix of purple, black, and blue paint to get the color I wanted. I was really happy with how it came out. I put masking tape all around it about 1 inch away from the edge so that the lines came out straight when I painted it. I also used interfacing on the cloak, as Akina said. For the shoes I bought clogs, made a cover for them with brown fabric, and I ended up using craft foam for the tongue and backing of the shoe. The sleeves I'm sure will be fine either way. I made mine detached, and put elastic at the top to keep them up.

And kala, the site I know that has some alternate outfit pictures isn't working right now. If it gets fixed, I'll send the link to you. But yeah, otherwise, it's hard to find pictures! =(

I'm going to play a bit farther into the game so I can check. I just started last night so I don't have Anise in my party yet. : D;; The disappearing belt thing is very odd, though. I'd think that she needs one to keep her dagger... thing up though.

I had a hard time picking out the right color wig for Tear because her hair's not really blonde, brown, or gray. What color would you say her hair is? o_O I ended up getting a light-brown-gray-blonde color, lol. Hope it looks ok when I get it.

@Rika-Chan: Have you tried Target? Target was the wonder-store when I was trying to find black socks. Maybe you'll have luck with your leggings there?

I need an opinion from someone to tip the scale. Do you guys think it would look cheesy if I transformed Tokunaga's sack into a little carrying case for me to use at the con? I'm thinking of putting a zipper on the inside half so I can untie it and take out things I need when I'm at the con. That way, I wouldn't be carrying a big purse around all day. Good idea? Bad? : D;;

Lothlin
10-23-2007, 06:26 PM
No, that's not a bad idea at all XD Seriously, our Arietta is putting a zipper in the back of her doll so that she can stuff things in it and have it double as a purse. Carrying a purse around is just so much hassle.

I always thought of Tear having greyish brown hair personally :> but I've seen all different colors of wigs people have gotten. My perspective generally is: If they can pull it off, more power to them! Some people don't look good with specific haircolors, or have their own preference. I've seen blonde Tears, brown haired and even reddish blonde, but they all looked good. I thought so anyway. 8Db

I used a lightweight fusible interfacing. It turned out just how I wanted it to. It was just stiff enough to keep its shape while still having some flexibility.

I used hook and eyes to keep the front together. I usually always keep them all fastened minus the top one or two, so you can just slip it over your head and not end up having to fasten every single hook each time you take it on and off.

And I think your using Tokunaga as a purse is a super cute idea~!

I just got all of my fabric and materials today, and I have a day off tomorrow (yes!) so I'll hopefully be able to get at least the dress done by then. I've already wasted around 2 yards of muslin making prototypes of the dress. XD

Random story: I dumped all of my fabric in the washing machine without separating dark and light colors because I was feeling extremely lazy, and I just took it out. I originally had bought white fabric for the cloak since I couldn't find an extremely light pink color like in my refs, but I guess some of the color from the darker fabrics bled and it turned out to be the exact color I needed when I took it out. This makes me so happy. D:

Lothlin

are you making the gloves with stretchy or non-stretchy fabric? Because Jade's gloves were pretty much hell, being non stretchy- I made about three different versions before I got them right.

There's a couple things that can help with them, though. First, make the part across the back of your hand a little wider than the part across the bottom. Secondly, instead of just connecting the top piece to the bottom piece, make sure you have the long strips between the fingers. I forget exactly what they're called, but if you search online for a proper glove pattern, they'll all have those.

but alas, there isn't an easy way. Gloves suck, no matter what you do x.x

xD since i'm a noob cosplayer, i have no idea what the hook thing you guys are talking about is...xD;;; but what i did was used a zipper on the front.. the only mistake i made was that i didnt use bias tape on the sides before putting the zipper...>__>;; so it looks very messy....

The method I used to make Jade's gloves turned out to be pretty easy. Go to a costume shop or any Halloween store and find a pair of gloves already made (stretch or non stretch, doesn't matter: I used stretch personally). Take out all the seams and use the pieces from it as a pattern. Worked like a charm for me! 8]

I finally got the majority of Genis done. I'll get pictures up over the weekend at Youma Con. I decided to put Luke on hold for the time being, until Ohayo Con. But I'm thankful, Genis is mostly done. I just need to make his belt, boot covers and finish that blasted wig. I'm very happy so far with the way he turned out, but the only complaint I have is that I should of made his blue over jacket and shorts a bit baggier.

oh but i was wondering what kind of material was best to use for stretch gloves.

Lothlin
11-01-2007, 11:23 PM
Do you want a matte finish or a shiny one? Shinier, like, the bathingsuit material lycra would work nicely (it's generally nice fabric, I got a slew of it for another costume I'll be doing for ohayocon.) Matte... well, probably some sort of cotton/poly blend. My knowledge of fabrics is kind of sad, it tends to run either very complex things (brocade and velvet,) very simple things (broadcloth and cotton knits? XD) and then... whatever I happen to find on sale.

What I would do is go to your fabric store armed with coupons, find all the fabrics that are the proper color, and find the one that feels best and won't be a complete bitch to sew.

.....Oy, I *finally* finished my Tokunaga after a week and tons and tons of resewing. I just need to pick up some embroidery floss for the stitches and a two-hole button for the red eye. (I bought a four-hole one instead, and they were $2.50 for two, augh.)

Now I just need to get cracking on... everything else. : D Blech.

Anyone have any suggestions for materials for the boot covers? I was thinking of fun foam shapes covered with pleather to give it a more... boot-like look. Still need to find a place that sells white above the knee socks as well as white gloves, argh.

@Finch: It looks awesome! o: But yeah, your friend should probably go for a wig unless she's not picky with hair color.

For the bronze part of her boots, I would go with this tutorial here (http://entropyhouse.com/penwiper/costumes/helmsdeep.html) that has to do with craft foam armor. It's insanely easy (I used it for my first prop-job) and looks REALLY believable when it's done. As for the actual shoes, you could do a series of things. I would find a pair of black dress shoes honestly, and maybe add a leather strip over them that matches the texture and shine of it. But that's just me. :]

The tear does look good! I do agree, she should get a wig, Tear's hair is a lot ashier in color than your friend's.

Yeah, I kinda think so too. Then I'll have to take her wig shopping so we can find a good'n that's like her color! 8D

Really? It seemed to me like a lot of the Tales fans were out on the East coast! XD Mmm, nope, can't say I've been to Acen before D: But I plan to go to Otakon~ do you go to that one?

Lothlin
11-03-2007, 12:09 AM
East coast maybe, but midwest? In this thread, there's what, Kala, Rogue, and I?

Well, my roomie has been trying to convince me to go, since she lives out there and it's pretty much her home convention. Problem is, Otakon requires so much planning that I'm afraid I won't know soon enough if I'll be able to go, assuming I manage to scrape together the cash.

I'm going to do my damndest to go, but I don't see it happening. This year at least. Maybe next year, once I've graduated college and I've got a steady job with vacation time XD

I'm on the east coast, in Florida. No one recognizes the Tales series down here. XD My friend cosplayed as Jade for a con just two weeks ago, and I think only around 6 people recognized her, including me. The others, apparently, either thought she was Riza Hawkeye or someone from Kingdom Hearts.

That tutorial looks promising, but I think Anise's boots are made out of leather. D: I'll have to analyze some more screenshots to decide what they really are. Thank you, though!

@Rika-chan: Woo! Awesome! Y'know, I think I'm going to do my darndest this year to make an appearance at Acen. XD

Gah, and I finally finished uploading the rest of the pictures from the little photoshoot that Rogue and I did yesterday. Now all I have to do is go hack out the sewing on the Sync and Luke cosplays for our group so they can do the detailing themselves x.x

Yay for more Dr. Jade! XD Well, for mine, I went to a costume shop near my house and they sold doctor mirrors along with other stuff (it came with a stethescope in the one I got, how convenient!) So I'd try browsing around party stores or costume shops, especially since they might be having sales now that Halloween is over! :]

...Hmm, I'd better buy a stethascope like you did, just in case my dad doesn't want me to bring one of his...^^U Though, if he does let me, that's be awesome! XD

Now that I've seen the pic of your Dr Mambo cosplay though...he does have a unique style of shoes to go with the costume, doesn't he? No problem 8Db Yeah, his shoes are kind of specific, they're like spats but with brown instead of black. I actually had a pair of shoes really similar in style, so I just painted it brown and white with acrylic paint and it worked fine for me! Saves the effort of going out and finding shoes exactly like that too. XD

Hmm~ You could try getting a sheet of newspaper, folding it in half, and drawing one side of the design with the center over the fold. Then cut it out and unfold it like those snowflakes we used to have to make in grade school. XD Then if you wanted you could trace that onto the poster board. Or if you're feeling super confident, you could just skip the newspaper idea and go straight to doing it on the poster board as step one.

I screen-printed my Anise cloak, using this awesome tutorial I found:
http://taeliac.deviantart.com/art/Fakie-Screen-Printing-Tutorial-55149185

I drew the design on some normal paper, then traced it onto the contact paper. It took an entire day to do the whole cloak, but it came out great!

Kimimi Mode
11-03-2007, 10:23 PM
I was looking at that screen printing tutorial last night, and I think it would work for the back, but I'm not so sure about the front. XD I want to be able to flip the stencil over so I can get a mirror image of the design, and I wouldn't be able to reuse a contact paper stencil for the front.

Maybe I can use both of your methods, posterboard for the front and fake screen printing for the back. *considers*

AkinaSumora
11-04-2007, 12:48 PM
When I drew out the design on normal paper, I just drew half and then traced it over on the other side, so it looked exactly the same on both sides. Then I made a stencil for each side, so it ended up being exactly alike. ^_^

I will note, that Sync's outfit is CRAZYSAUCE, and even though I'm only sewing the costume so my roomie can do the detail her self (talisments, giant ribbon things, MASK OF DOOM, et cetera,) I still want to rip my hair out. Not only does he have the weirdest, duck-bottomed butt-cape in video games ever, but his shoulders have crazy flower petal things that are going to be such a bitch to cut and sew so they'll look right.

Why hello there interfacing, you say you want to be of use? Welcome to the party, meet Sync's clothing, he'll be your new home.

I will say, this has started a string of humorous comments between me and the roomie about who exactly dresses Sync in the morning.

We are looking for a huge group! I personally know that I want to have a private photoshoot as well as a public one. But with the private photoshoot, I would like to have most of the cast (without doubling characters). If you would be interested in having a photoshoot with me and some friends that are cosplaying from Tales of the Abyss, or even Tales of Symphonia, please let me know! I think I'd rather do the long wig XD

I'm pretty much to the point where I'm going to rinse out ALL the goop I've already put into the wig and start over with it tommorow. I keep getting weird looping hair things from the hair sticking to the hair glue on my hands and pulling away. It's annoying.

Plus, wigs aren't MADE with enough fiber in the back to cover everything nicely, so I'm left leaving out a few spikes, spreading the hair really thin, and being very thankful that my roomie has dark hair and the mesh won't show because of it.

Sync's hair is like.... shellacked. We've decided that someone played a joke on him and just GLUED it all like that one day, because there's no sane way anyone could go about styling their hair like that on a daily basis.

That is an insane goal. Are you counting the god generals as cosplayable? And, really, since there's the ingame character viewer, a lot of characters that NORMALLY wouldn't be cosplayable become so because there's good references.

I mean, just going by mains and God-Generals, you've got Luke, Jade, Anise, Tear, Natalia, Guy, Van, Asch, Sync, Arietta, Legretta, Largo, and hell we'll throw in Ion.

and that's not getting into alternate costumes XD

Yep, I haven't even thought about the alternative costumes yet, but of the characters, this is what I have to do left:

- Tear
- Anise
- Natalia
- Mieu

- Asch the Bloody
- Dist the Reaper
- Sync the Temptest
- Van Grant
- Largetta the Quick

- Peony
- Ginji
- Frings
- Nembilim
- Nephry
- Yulia

Cosplays I've already done from the game:

- Guy
- Jade
- Ion
- Luke (working on)

The hair styles aren't that bad compared to the bias tape though. I think the least amount of packages I've used for any Tales of cosplay is about 3.

Seriously! I went through five on Jade, three on Dist and three on Tear. Suffice to say, bias tape is kind of my comfort zone now. XD

Ohh, I'm so excited! My friend is coming down for Thanksgiving weekend, and I made her a Dist cosplay. We're gonna have us a little photoshoot~ *u*

I think I did about 5 as well for Jade. Ion was more, because I did his curvy designs with bias tape. I really hate it. I do.

OMG. STAHN. <3 I want to do a Stahn cosplay too but I honestly don't know if/when it's going to happy. For the wig, I recommend getting a long Punky style wig... if you need to find places to order them from I have a few sellers/stores in mind that you could get the base wig from... just send me a PM and I'll help you out. =)

As far as armor...? XD I'll leave that up to someone else to answer. I'm pretty curious myself.

I know I'm going to need at least 4 or 5 packs of bias tape for Anise (and her outfit is relatively normal compared to everyone else's!), so I went ahead and bought three packs of white and two packs of plum.

Also, on a random note, I never knew how complicated hair ribbons could get. XP I started making Anise's little bows last night and I don't know if I want to make them separate from the elastic or attached to two elastics. I think separate would be better because it would be easier to keep the long dangly bits of ribbon untangled, but it would be more frustrating to put on than having them just attached... argh.

I can't wait to see your photoshoot, Grey Finch! <3 (Also can't wait for Thanksgiving break either, augh)

I would totally recommend tying the hair with the elastic first, and then tying the ribbon over the elastic after. Some wigs I've had with really long hair that required bows at the ends fared MUCH better with that method, and I never even had to take the ribbons out after that!

XD I hope it's as convenient with real hair. I'm thinking of making some clasp thing so I can just clasp the ribbon together over the elastic... maybe with some leftover hook-and-eyes I have. Hopefully that will work..

arg!! Those annoyed me too!! Especially since i was hand sewing mine too. The stinky bias tape is so hard to sew through and the triangle shapes didnt help much...>__>

i'm sure the cloak wont be too hard. I finished mine pretty quickly even tho its hand sewn. The hard part for me was the shoulders and the collar part. I've never attatched a collar or even made a cloak, heck i've never made anything before, and it turned out okay. =] but yeah dont give up! Ur almost finished, and I bet it'll turn out great! ^^

but yeah, i'm not exactly sure how to use bias tape and stuff, but the folding thing was out of the question for me. Too thick. So i cut it in the angle and sewed them on that way. It doesnt look too bad that way, i think.

Oh, maybe I can offer some help there 8D It's pretty easy to mitre bias tape to get to a point (I had to do it a lot for Jade's lapels and Dist's jacket, and the points on Tear's dress). I'll try to explain it, but if it doesn't make sense I can make a little diagram on paint XD;

Take the bias tape where the point of the fabric will be, and turn it inside out at that point. Then sew a triangle from the sides going up to the middle of where you folded it. Then snip the extra bits off the sides and turn it inside out so it sits like a point 8D Here's an example of what I mean:

...I'll have to remember that. My bias tape points look MUCH more ghetto-fied.

So, I've got tommorow before we leave for the con friday to sew together Luke's coat for a friend. Most of it's cut out, and he's going to do the details (Yay thank goodness!) But that still leaves me sewing a big freaking coat together with minimal time to do so.

Yup. Tommorow is going to be another long day.

I guess I'm going to sew together the dress and put the collar on today. I've still got two weeks before the con to finish the whole costume, but I still haven't gotten the contact paper for the cloak nor the materials for the shoes... durr. And I've got another cosplay to sew together and line, not to mention I'm helping my friend put together her Misao cosplay (or, sew the whole thing for her). At least I have Thanksgiving break and the weekends to work.

Good luck with the sewing, Lothlin! :D

So right now I'm working on Anise, but it's kind of on hiatus cos I'm kind of. Not home and no access to a sewing machine. xD; But I know the perfect base for the shoes and it's really common round these parts so I'm going to buty them. When I get money. And when I get home I have two weeks-just kidding, 11 days until the con and add that with serious jetlag and you've got it :BB;;

And in the near future I'm going to be doing Ried from Eternia, Asch, and Iria from the not-yet-released Innocence (but I'm getting it the day it comes out woo hfhdfsla) .... all of which are part of pairs that I'm doing with my friend <3

XD No problem! Prepare for the SUPER ULTRA GORGEOUS PAINT TUTORIAL.

(Seriously though, might wanna sheild the eyes) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v83/shadowedmyth/lolbiastape1.jpg)

Okay, I'll explain the little pictures in steps. *u* The grey is the wrong side of the bias tape, the red line is the fold (which is why this little trick only works for double sided bias tape, not single sided) and the pink is your fabric. 8D
1) Get your bias tape set to where you want the point to be.
2) Find where you want the point of it to be and mark it somehow (I usually just pinch it, but you can stick a pin in it too)
3) Once you have that point, fold the bias tape backwards and overlapping so the wrong side is out and the right sides are against each other.
4) From the point, sew a V shape to either edge.
5) Snip the corners so it'll be easier to turn inside out later on. But don't get too close to the seam~
6) Turn the bias tape back to right side up. There should be a little depression in the middle of your line.
7) Use scissors or something tiny to poke the triangle shape inside out (which is now right side out 8Db)
8) fold it back along the natural crease of the double sided fold.
9) Heat and bond it, sew it, glue it, whatever itand you're done!

I hope that one made sense. D8

Here's a secret- fabric paint is pretty much just acrylic paint. And is generally cheaper than those tiny little bottles. If I were you (and especially since you're down to crunch time,) I'd just head down to walmart and buy yourself a few bottles of acrylic.

If you don't layer it on too thickly, you shouldn't have to worry about it flaking off. Hell, even if you DO layer it on, the first thing you'd have to worry about would be the fabric stiffening up, not flaking.

http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1260528 Not a tales cosplay, but still- see that design on the front of my shirt? All acrylic paint. Freehanded at that (never freehanding something that stupidly detailed again, I'll tell you.) And that stuff is not coming off anytime soon XD

Kimimi Mode

XD I actually have some acrylic paint in my closet, I believe! I was just worried about the fabric getting too stiff. I'm going to try one last experiment with mixing the paints I have on hand to get the correct color and also to make it thicker so it won't flow, but I'll use acrylics if it doesn't turn out well. Thank you!

Lothlin
11-26-2007, 09:06 PM
As long as you go kind of slow and don't just gob the paint on, you shouldn't have to worry about it getting too stiff. Water works as a thinner for acrylics, so putting a little in your acrylics while working can help them go on more smoothly ^^

Grey Finch

Might be a little late on the input here, but QFT.

Acrylic paint is most excellent and I prefer it over fabric paint. I used it on the "R"s for my friend and my Team Rocket shirts, I used it on my Sheik tabard and I used it on Dist's flower petals for gradient and the actual design on his suit too. Among several other things I use acrylic for. Heck, I even used it to paint my Doctor Jade shoes! And it didn't come off a bit even with me trekking through the park site.

Because it's a plastic based paint, it's flexible and will move with the fabric as long as you don't use an overly excessive amount. It's also kind of bad to use too much water because it thins out the paint to an extent where it gets uneven coverage on the fabric and you have to add several layers (with just the right amount of water, you can usually get away with just one layer). It also won't chip off or bleed (again, as long as you don't use too much water~).

Lothlin
11-26-2007, 10:38 PM
Yeah. It does have to be just the right amount of water XD. So, if you don't know WHAT the right amount is, it's better just to go with it straight up.

I'm actually probably going to be using more acrylic on harle, when it comes to detailing her, do get the cording and the edging the right color, because goodness knows NO ONE makes metallic gold bias tape, and the cording I got isn't quite gold, it's more yellow. But hey, that's not Tales, that's Chrono Cross XD

I was so upset that I forgot my proper boots and thus I had to wear tennis shoes that made my boot covers look super droopy, BUT winning best group totally made me forget such a silly little thing. <3 It was a fun time (and I swear if our Luke doesn't put his wig into a pony tail I'm going to do it for him! XD;;;)

If any of you are familiar with the Tales Of Oekaki board, I've been tempted to do an Asch-Mint cosplay. XD I never did beat ToP though, so I'd have to do that first. Probably start over since I don't remember much details up to the point that I got in the game. One day...maybe one day. Though I'm sure NO ONE would get it. X3~

@Grey Finch: Your Jade 2.0 looks amazing! I love the recent photoshoot. <33
