This is a fantastic idea, I liked the look of the Pyro guy from TF:Classic and TF:Forever. The one in TF:2 looks hilarious.

That's awesome that you guys are doing that! My boyfriend was thinking of being the engineer for Halloween. I also have a friend who looks just like the scout, but he doesn't want to dress up like him this year. I was hoping they'd do a TF2 group too...

ya we want to do it for the lan but thats next saturday... but we were also planning on using it for halloween so i guess we will see what we can get together in that amount of time...

ok ive decided to go for a scout atleast for the LAN next saturday here are some pictures of what i am gonna try to look like...

im going to do the red color scheme but i need help identifying some of the styles of the clothing so i can find things that look like it... like for instance the hat. Does that kind of hat have a name, it is a little "boxier" than a baseball cap but i dont know what those kind of hats are called...

also does anyone have an idea for a shoe i could go get that looks like those for relatively cheap??

i can get a red t-shirt thats easy, i already have dog tags (hard to see but he is wearing them). The pants look brownish on the red model, i am just going to get a pair of sweat pants and take the legs up to my knees but i might use like a charcoal color instead.

i need an idea for what to use for the bag on his back and where to get a baseball bat that small.. ( possibly some kids game has something that size that i can paint to look metallic??)

there are a few other things ill need like athletic tape to wrap my hands (already have a few rolls), also i need a headset like that... i was goignt o use my black xbox 360 headset but now that i look at the pics it looks like they used a ear "cup" from shooting ear muffs (whatever they are called) so i might try to find some of those and piece my own pair together unless someone has a better suggestion??

ill pick up a pair of white tube socks in the next day or so along with a red t-shirt. and last thing is a black belt with a silver square belt buckel which should be easy to find the only thing wrong with that is find pants with belt loops that will work for this... or maybe just making my own belt loops on whatever pants i decide to use...

eventually i would like to make a scatter gun like you see in the 2nd and 5th pics so i might need help with that too...

sorry if my ideas are a little out of order... i havent had alot of time to think this out yet but i hope this post was clear enough so that anyone who has good ideas can figure out what i need lol. thanks in advance for any help and ill see what stuff i can find at sports authority tomorrow...

all items:
Red T-Shirt
brown/dark grey pants
black belt
hat
bag
small baseball bat
headset
white knee high socks
black shoes with white stripes
tape on hands

My friend went as the Scout for the Halloween party we had last weekend, I'll have to post pictures as a reference.
As for TF2 cosplay on this end, I'd like to have a Demoman costume done for Megacon.

The cap mate looks like a black boonie cap like your marines wear. The shoes can be replicated by a pair of soccor boots with the studs removed IMO.

ya that second one is the coolest by far but if you could pull off the pyro from tf2 that would be incredibly awesome.. if i had more time and space thats the one i wanted to do.

thats for the hat refrence i found the exact same item on amazon when i did my search, does anyone know of a comon store that sells hats like that so i dont hjave to wait for shipping?

ALSO that picture is dark grey but that pic came out before they finalized everything, i might use that reference instead but in game your clothes are tinted according to what team you are on. so the blue scout looks like he is wearing dark bule pants...

thanks for the help so far! anyone have an idea on the headset or how to make (or where to get) the pants (with belt loops...)???

Head set looks like a regular Headphone/mic rig you can get from radioshack. The trousers look like regular dark coloured pants but tucked in the socks. You need some white fingerless gloves and you need a black belt with a plain silver metallic buckle.

Whoa, Strider2418, are you sure we're not the same person? I've got a Scout costume and wish I could find 8 other people to complete the team.

lol ya i want to do a pyro but i dont have the time, money, or space and i play scout ALOT so it fits... right now i am red but i might end up going blue... all i need to change is the color of my shirt

AND HOLY SHIT where did you get the headset!! it is perfect and i must know!...

it actually looks like his hands are just taped up so i am going to use white athletic tape to do that and i have plenty of that already, im sure i can find the belt and buckle at the mall or something right now i really only need to find:
pants that fit the role good
a military style hat that i can get by saturday
and shoes like that (would be easy if i didnt wear a size 15 :( )

and on another note i got some of the costume today!

i found:
white soccer socks
a small baseball bat (just need to spray paint over the logos silver)
a red T shirt (might need a blue one now :( )
and i have an all black belt but i dont have a silver belt buckle yet

so i would say i am about 35% on this costume right now...

I really want to build a Pyro suit/weapon and I play the Scout most often. I also have big feet. We are definitely the same person. I don't really prefer blue to red. I'm thinking of getting a red t-shirt so I can switch teams at any time.

The headset is made out of garbage. I got a set of broken ear protectors at a surplus store for a dollar. One ear-piece had already snapped off, so I didn't have to remove it. The microphone is two bottle caps and two straightened paper clips. It impairs my hearing, especially on the left side.

Your pants will be falling down all the time. Fortunately, it's the pant legs that fall down, which is less embarrassing than the alternative. I couldn't run and keep my socks up, which is really lame for a Scout.

got this covered already i have white soccer socks they wont come down ven if i wanted them too lol, the pants on the other hand... it looks like i am gonna go with a dark grey which means ill be using a pair of sweats i have and i dont think they will fall down much either i have pretty big calves (basketball player) and that hsould help hold the pants up. got the top covered also because if i am gonan use these pants then i am going to make a few small cuts to create "belt loops" and ill be wearing a belt with them.

hmm looks like i need to make a stop at Ross, goodwill, and some army surplus type stores to solve my headset deficiency.

I'm putting together a Medic costume for myself. :)

I won't look anything like the Medic from the game (aside from the clothes) though, since I'm not a German man, but an Asian girl. :P

Juego

I'm also going to be the Medic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Tf2Medic.jpg). I'm nuts for the art direction in TF2 and started thinking of costumes for the spy, medic, or engineer. I settled on medic because I am crap at playing the other 2 classes in-game.

I'm going as the RED medic, so found some WWII repro breeches in the right color, some tall black jump boots, and a lab coat as the base outfit.

I'm a stickler for detail, so I'll probably make my own coat after Halloween, since the in-game model wears the more anachronistic "mad scientist" style coat with the side buttons on the chest, plus it's extra long and is cut away at the waist. Likewise, I'll probably go cheap for the patches on the shoulders the first time around.

The backpack will be fabricated from a box, a 2-liter bottle, and whatever I can find at the hardware store. I'll look for a frame, a belt, and the ammo bags at the army/navy surplus store to hook it all up. I may make a bonesaw, as I'm rather fond of tearing up spies with it, plus I enjoy the in-game taunt.

Shirt, tie, glasses, no problem. Red rubber gloves are proving to be a bit of a pain to find, though I have a backup on the internet if I can't find anything locally.

I am going to try to make a somewhat flashy medi-gun. At Target, I found a portable spotlight by Durabuilt that has a handle on top and a pistol grip on the bottom. With some pvc pipe, tubing, and a red filter over the lens, I'll be able to make it look relatively good, plus flash red! If I have time, I'll try to fabricate some sort of streamer (with a hook on the end for attaching to other people) for the health beam.

If I take it to MegaCon, I might bring along some of "+" speech bubbles for friends to pose with. :D Because, you know, I don't see them enough in-game.

LoL The Medic'll be the second TF2 costume I'll have done... only because I promised myself I'd go as the Demoman! Bottle and all, clamoring about being the only "Black Scottish Cyclops"; ranting about explosives. :sunburn:

The only obvious fear I have is local authorties mistaking the cosplay for something sinister. So I'll try to make the props look just as comical as in the game. *cough*

A friend of mine was inspired by my talk of a medic costume and he started looking up mechanics of how to build a sentry gun, since Engineer is his favorite class.

I sincerely hope he didn't mean an actual working sentry gun. :p

Actual rubber electrical gloves were far too expensive, so I ordered some cheaper vinyl ones online, but I don't know how good they'll look (I'll know when they arrive, I guess).

Nice spy gear! Are you going to make a paper mask of one of the enemy players? :D

Stopped by the hardware stores after work today and made a quick mockup of the medigun (http://img152.imageshack.us/my.php?image=medigunmockuppb6.jpg).

It's off-model (in-game looks like the business end of a firehose + a telephoto lense), but will look better once properly assembled and painted. The overall size is nearly perfect, though. Since the base is a working spotlight, I'll be able to shoot red beams of light at people!

Gonna start on the pack, soon...

There are some folks over here (http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?p=565918) making most of the BLU team. Their pyro is actually making a working flame thrower! o.O

The thread is worth looking through for some ideas for the other classes, especially the great helmet find for the BLU soldier.

by the way we went undefeated in the TF2 tournament Saturday night BUT none of us dressed up because only a couple of us could of had something that would work so i guess we are just gonna try to get some of them done for Halloween instead...

i still need the:
messenger bag
headset
hat
shoes
belt/buckle
and even though i have the bat, i want to start mocking up a scattergun i think i have most of it plausible in my head but not sure how i am gonna do the stock of the gun yet so any suggestions there would be great!

How are you planning on doing the barrels?

Paper/cardboard? Then make the stock out of cardboard. See this guy (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A//kamikuzu.fc2web.com/html-1/kamikuzu-gallary.html&langpair=ja%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8) for some inspiration. (You used to be able to download the patterns, but alas, no more.)

If PVC, you can probably insert the stock of a toy gun (http://www.replicaweaponry.com/hexdobapi.html) into a PVC drain cap (http://images.acehardwareoutlet.com/getimage/getImage.aspx?Path=products/47550_111306I.jpg&height=125&width=120). Then, build out the rest. I'm sure there is a bracket or something at the hardware store to be the handle bit, beneath the trigger.

Thanks for the idea! I poked around a bit online and am thinking of adapting a wizard stick (http://www.zerotoys.com/newsite/products/wizardsticknohead.htm) inside the barrel of the MkII version.

Re: the syringe gun. It won't happen for Halloween, but I'd like to give it a try. That container you linked has a nice shape to it. Dunno where I'll put the final product, though, since the Medigun is a bit hefty. :D

Btw, to anyone looking for a pair of gloves on the cheap, these True Blues (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MWFWZY/002-2694423-9964804) hold a real nice shape around the fingers -- they aren't saggy like other kitchen gloves.

Backpack is also all prototyped and going into final production, soon. Hooray for the game's commentary mode, which is great for taking screenshots.

I had the good fortune of finding an awesome spotlight at Target that had the handle on top. You can see the gun bits better here (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1310860).

Portal = love. I'm surprised there isn't a thread already for it. {hint, hint}

It's like the spotlight was made to be a part of the gun, it's so perfect. Lucky find!

I feel weird starting a thread for a game that only has one cosplayable character unless you get really creative, haha.

i on the other hand still havent found a hat... i think i am just gonna try to find a regular black baseball cap... then throw together a bag tomorrow after work i guess...

Might be late (was it for Halloween?), but what you're looking for is called a B.D.U. cap, or a Patrol Cap, and can quite commonly be found at military surplus stores.

Man, you guys are showing me up with the medic stuff before I even begin! That heal beam is tremendously impressive.

Assuming you can find good parts, the Medigun is embarrassingly easy; it's just assemble + paint. The only bits you have to cut are the barrel pipe and a bit of red plastic as a filter for the beam.

What's difficult is the pack - you have to fabricate so much of it from scratch.

My Halloween edition is pretty dodgy (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1312579) since I only had a few days to make it. I fiberglassed it to give it strength, but wasn't able to sand it down as much as I would have liked.

Lemme tell you - the harness will be the hardest part to make if your pack is anything heavier than foam board. Most of the stress accumulates at one point where the shoulder straps meet the top of the pack, so you need something very strong.

Depending on the weight of the pack, you may also need to make the armstraps attach to the bottom of the pack schoolbag-style instead of directly to the belt. (I had to do this.) Otherwise, your belt will end up getting pulled up too high to support the pack's weight.

I stupidly painted the back of my pack before I attached the harness -- I'm surprised it survived Halloween (a note to people throwing Halloween parties - bonfires and tiki torches are cool, but perhaps unwise when so many people are covered in highly flammable chemicals.).

I can only hope that I can pull something that good out of my sewing machine.

It looks like you've done long coats before, so I'm sure you can whip up something cool. :D

Still so very awesome! Duct tape has such an advantage in keeping that stylized look. The grenades and helmet are my favorite pieces.

And good job choosing RED as your team.

I finished enough for Halloween (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1313222). The pack harness is already falling apart after one day, lol. Granted, it was a warm evening made worse by a bonfire.

I've got a busy gig schedule for a few weeks, but I'm going to revisit this one to make things more on-model. The revised version will be for MegaCon at the very least.

A lot of prop making is really just finding stuff (usually trash/surplus items) that has the right shape, gluing it all together, then painting the crap outta it 'til it looks decent. Hey Juego, how did you do the medic pants? I see that they're kind of slightly tinted blue or red depending on which team you're on.

Yup. His coat is tinted, too. RED team is off-white, BLU much more obvious.

In my mind, his pants are wool, WWII-esque trousers tucked into boots sorta like these (http://www.caboots.com/product/1XCWSHOT/SHOTGUN_BOOTS_CUSTOM.html) (but with a lower heel and no side pull tabs). For Halloween, though, I crapped out and wore a pair of greyish khakis with my grinders (http://www.boot.com/bgking.htm). :D

I'm not good at sewing yet, so for my remake, I'm looking around for wool trousers in the right color. I've seen WWII pink drab repros (http://historypreservation.com/hpassociates/eastmanlanding5_2.php) that look about right for the RED team, though I wish they weren't creased. If I don't go with these, I'll look for some normal wool dress trousers, as I need dress pants, anyway.

I could swear I've seen WWII trousers in the correct blue tint, but any examples escape me for the moment.

A cheaper alternative would be to find some heavy-weight twill, flat-front pants in a light khahki/putty color and dye them.

I'm having trouble finding an exact replica of the gas mask. The mask apparently covers his head and has two threadings for canisters. Most masks I've found have either one or the other.

Sweet!

I've been looking around at gasmasks, pondering the pyro, myself. It seems there is a trade-off between the filters, eye shapes, and full hood. So far, I've found:

No full hood:
WWII British (http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/ishop/877/shopscr2549.html)
Canadian (http://www.aasurplus.com/detail.aspx?ID=157)
K-1 (http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/evolution-5000.htm)

Partial hood, only 1 filter:
Israeli Civilian (http://www.interamer.com/Masks.htm) (best match, imo, for overall facial shape -- it has the most rodent-like look to it)

Full hood, wrong color, 1 filter:
Russian (http://www.campingsurvival.com/brnewinboxru.html)

I've also just stumbled across gasmasks.net (http://www.gasmasks.net/), though the site is a bit pokey right now for me to browse very quickly through.

I've yet to see a gas mask that has the hood all the way down past the collar, like the pyro's. So, you'll probably have to make your own hood to compensate, regardless...

Yo, I am doing the Pyro for the next convention, surprisingly it isn't all too hard. The only other problem I have is with the flamethrower and the harnesses(I think he has two). Anyone have any clues as what to do?

For the flamethrower I was thinking of using mainly PVC piping, a white plastic container with velcro/straps holding it to the shaft, a gas pump handle, and I haven't thought about what to do for that weird piece under the shaft.

I will have to make it collapsible/pull it apart (I am stuck to the range of 3 ft.), now this seems to be where I can really screw up(yes, I can screw something like this up beyond repair). I was thinking maybe cutting the pipe in half and sanding down one edge to the point were it could pop in and out. Well I think that is what i want to try to do. I am also thinking of using Velcro and straps to hold together the canister and shaft. If anyone else has any ideas for this then I wouldn't mind some other thoughts.

To Juego, I have the Israeli mask, it is really good for the TF2 pyro mask. If you want to be anal about it, then you might want to paint the filter black. In my opinion, it does the job.

Six of my friends are in con-limbo (that state where they're not sure if they want to spend the time/money) so I'm not sure if I'll be prop-ing and helping to make all nine, but I'm definitely going to have a Medic, a Heavy Weapons Guy, and a Spy.

I'm really looking forward to the weapons/props!

Juego

I don't think 3' will be too bad a compromise -- you may want to shortchange the handle a bit so you can devote more length to the piping.

Problems:I am having trouble since this is pretty much the first time i am using PVC piping. I need to make it collapsible, so I was thinking about cutting the piping at 3 ft and sanding one end so all I have to do is slide it in and out.

I'd worry about the pipe jamming, especially after being painted -- Try a threaded joint on the upper pipe where it meets the handle and again where it meets the muzzle (and anywhere else where it needs to come apart). That way, you can just unscrew it.

You can find threaded joints in both the pvc and drain pipe section of your hardware store. The drain pipe stuff tends to be much lighter, though wider diameter.

I am also thinking of using Velcro and straps to hold together the canister and shaft. If anyone else has any ideas for this then I wouldn't mind some other thoughts.

You may need some industrial-strength velcro sandwiched between the cannister and the piping to keep things from being wobbly, especially if you plan on doing the taunt. :D

I figure it will be easier to do this, if anyone knows a better way then I wouldn't mind hearing it. I also need to figure out if I want to curve the piping at the end or to buy a 45 degree thing and just go off from there. If anyone has any ideas to improve on this then don't hesitate.

Heat bend (http://www.wgsc.com/pvc/how-to-bend-pvc-pipe.htm) the pvc; it's a more subtle angle than 45 degrees. The smaller pipe with the pilot light is, of course, more severe.

What are you using for the handle? IMO, that's actually the trickiest bit.

@Kadino -- my busy season for work (I was all over the state gigging) just ended, so I'll be going back to my Medic and Spy soon. I just found a bunch of cool switches and other bits (I'm using old speaker parts as bases for the suction cup parts) at the local surplus store for the sapper. :D Good luck on making Sascha!

As for the handle, you can find gas pump handles online, the problem is finding a sturdy enough one. There might be some at your local hardware store but I am not all to sure.

Ha ha, no problem - I don't know the proper names of all the PVC bits - I just wander up and down the hardware aisles and treat the place like it's a big tinkertoy store.

Basically, think of the top pipe of the flamethrower as if it were made of the following bits:

handle + adapter + threaded bit + pipe + threaded bit + adapter + muzzle

Start with the main pipe and attach two threaded bits (sorta like these (http://www.plumbingsupply.com/pvcnip.html)) to each end.

Inside or attached to the handle, attach an adapter (should look something like the adapter at the top of this (http://www.poolcenter.com/plumbing_supplies.htm) page). Put another adapter on the muzzle end.

So, now your flamethrower breaks down into the handle, long pipe, and muzzle. Strap on your propane tank and you're good to go. As long as you don't screw everything together too tightly, it should all be easy to breakdown.

It'd look ragged and unravel if you didn't finish off the edge.

I got mine from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Face-Mask-Colors-Available-Brown/dp/B000YA9FOI/ref=pd_bbs_10?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1199349030&sr=8-10) (you can modify the eye hole easily). It comes in dark blue (or red), but it's knit, so it doesn't have a very streamlined look. But, it's a good length and cheap + easy. Hey, how is everyone, well, I have been busy with trying to fix up scholarships(f'in college, they want you to go but it costs you an arm and a leg). Anyway, I am going to post some links of things people might want to look around for for the Pyro costume.

The Jumpsuit: http://myjumpsuit.com/index.html
(http://myjumpsuit.com/index.html)
I am guessing most people would go with blue, I am leaning towards burnt orange though, don't know just yet. make sure to get it baggy though.

The Harness:http://www.onlinesports.com/pages/I,OLY-TR498M-3.html?cm_mmc=Froogle-_-Products-_-PPC-_-OLY-TR498M-3
This is pretty close to what you might want to look for, but cheaper, you can even cut open an old backpack and modify it to your means if you feel like it would work.

The Feet/Hand-Ware:Galoshes and Black rubber gloves work fine, maybe a size bigger/smaller to make the costume work a little more.

Gas Mask:Look in the past pages of this thread, or look up the Israeli gas mask, you don't need to have the filter on when you wear the costume, but if you feel like it works then by all means do it.

Sling:http://www.columbussupply.com/products/?productid=172&price=288
If you look at the costume you see that there is a type of sling with the grenades strapped to it. The link I provided is a bit costly, but if you look around you can probably find something to your fitting, maybe.

Grenades:Paper mache or cut up PVC piping with duct tape works just as well.

Tank:This is the thing strapped to the back of the Pyro if you haven't noticed, people have done it different ways, I am thinking of finding some plastic containers and painting them.

Flamethrower:PVC piping, plastic container, and other items. If you look at the last few posts Juego has provided some good info and whatever else you need.

Axe:Well, make sure it is a toy axe, if you can't find the time to make the flamethrower, or something bad happens and some moron breaks it, then the axe will come in handy and you can just air guitar with it. If you are a guitarist then you can even bring your guitar(if you want to risk it, plus the weight) and shred on it, I might end up doing this (bringing an OLD/inexpensive guitar, not a new one FYI) if I get back to my natural groove(I haven't been able to play for 6 months, my guitar just got back to me, I REALLY need to practice, but yeah.

Where I live, it is 20 degrees, too cold for me to fiddle with the flamethrower, and it isn't a good idea to do it inside my house, even though the whole family is on vacation(empty house woo!). When I do start I will do a kind of play by play as I make it, if there is anyone else who sees something wrong with whatever I am doing, then don't hesitate to say anything. I hope I helped some people who are thinking about being pyro, or was hesitant, or at least gave some people new ideas.

Also feel free to add on to what I said, I know the sites I listed have pricey stuff, try to find these things around where you live at a cheaper price, or if you find something cheaper online, then go ahead and post it up too.

You can try to use an ALICE pack and replace the straps with seatbelt or similar strapping.

Currently I am worrying about if I will get my costume done, most likely it will be a yes. For the whole tank thing, I am going to wrap up a poster board in chicken wire and paper mache it so that it will be sturdy. I am going to try and get the jumpsuit and harness this week, next week I will be getting some supplies for the flamethrower, probably get a heat gun for real cheap and start on my flamethrower. I figure I get the main things that I need and add onto with stuff that I don't need much of.

The nozzle, I was going to do something like that, I have a small black trash can and shape it into the form of the nozzle thing.

If you haven't checked you messages yet, definitely yes.

The simple solution for the scout baseball bat is (clearly) to use a plastic one painted silver, but I've been thinking how well a heat source would work for adding the dent. There's also the marred team logo to be painted on it, if you're going all-out on the detail.

I found an army surplus that sold gas masks. I bought their last Israeli style gas mask. I think I'm either going to get a rubber/latex mask to cover the rest of my head for a seamless effect or just stick with a skimask for now. The fun part about buying a rubber/latex mask is that most distributors of masks from that kind of material are S&M style stores. O.o

I found this red coverall (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300186252970#ebayphotohosting) on ebay. It's really red and looks really cool. Hope he relists.

Also, for flash bangs, I think these are on the money (http://www.airsoftelite.com/products/PropGear/fb25.htm). Red Wolf Airsoft sells (or sold them) here (http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwolf/airsoft/Category?menu1=8&menu2=1183). Just search for 'dummy flashbang'.

Sweet. I'm trying to get pyro patches made. I have a few screenshots, but I have to wait until I get on my other machine to prepare them for the 'patchmaker'.

As for the flashbangs, I cannot find any. I think I'm just going to do what Frogs said and make them out of PVC.

I went to the S&M sites and they do make really cool one piece gas masks, but they are hella expensive ($500 on one site O.o).

Nice. Patches can be pricey, but having them professionally done is one of those little details that really pops.

And a thought: I wonder if something like Plasti Dip (http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/plastidip.html) would work well for the pyro glove fingertips.

I finally found a decent suit for the Spy outfit. A dark/navy blue, stripes and all. Although the pants are a bit too big, I'ma have them tailored. 9 bucks. Yay Goodwill!

Now, I must start working on the knife...anyone have any supply suggestions? I was thinking of Wonderflex or making a wood frame then covering it over with something to re-inforce it.

My brother was planning on going as a scout or a headcrab zombie. He has a perfect body build for it; skinny, lanky, with boney arms and legs. I think he wants to be the zombie though...so he has an excuse to put a headcrab on his cranium.

Well, the pyro gloves i the game are straight and go up to his elbows. These gloves are tapered at the wrist, but I guess some details cannot be fulfilled?

Seeing as there are a lot of pyros here, I'm going to see if I can get a ton of patches made (bulk orders are cheaper anyway).

Borzou - Probably the same thing you have there. If anything I'm going to try Lab Safety Supply, see if they're cheaper. (Careful though, if you order something from them you get a GIANT catalog monthly. Bigger then a dictionary! XD)

And probably some random black rainboots for the boots. But one thing questions me. What about the tank on his back?

borzou
01-22-2008, 02:47 PM
The closest match I could find is scuba tank with harness with the harness strap in a Y-configuration. I found one on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180206617440&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=008

God bless eBay, without it we would be lost.

My rough measurements for the tank, based on several screen shots (of the pyro from TF2):

Big Tank: ~24 inches tall, ~7 inches in diameter
Small Tank: ~12 inches tall, ~ 3.5 inches in diameter

My friend works for a gas company and I'm going to find some cheap tanks and probably make fiberglass shells for the sake of weight. The harness itself could be easily made from thick plastic or wood and straps with buckles.

Speaking of screenshots, I have taken a ton from various angles, but they are in .tga format and I don't have a way of converting them yet. I should be able to in a few weeks, so I'll keep y'all posted.

EDIT: I was not the winning bidder :bigcry:

borzou - You may convert .tga's into another format. I use GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/). It'll open them and then you can choose "Save As" with a different extension. Or, you can just print screen it and not screenshot it, copy the image into MS Paint and save it as jpg/gif/png there.

Edit: I've also found 4 pairs of decent gloves and shoes for the Spy, but I'm caught between them! I think I might go with these though:

Through a little bit of research, there appears to be three major categories of rubber gloves:

Kitchen / Common
These are your typical store-bought waterproof rubber gloves. They should work fine for a medic, but not smashingly well for anyone else. The biggest draw is that they're cheap. Easy to find in blue-green and yellow, uncommonly in blue, hard to find in red.

Nitrile / Latex / Chemical
These are chemical resistant types of gloves made with rubber or various synthetics. They are typically meant to be disposed of after use, and come in very thin/small (doctor's office) and slightly thicker/larger (industrial) sizes. The larger sizes commonly come in blue and yellow, though black and red aren't hard to find. They will cost more than kitchen gloves, but can look quite a bit better. I'd be sure to buy a glove that's a size larger than what fits your hand. Make sure the pair has a long gauntlet on it! Best for medics, solid choice for pyro or engy.
Major producers: Ansell, Best, North Safety

Electrical / Insulated / Linemans
These are gloves meant for protecting hands from heat or from electrical current arcing into them. They have liners inside, usually leather, which make them immense gloves. They are typically much more costly, but are most always gauntlet-style and come in all colors. Red, Yellow, and Black are easiest to find. There are also two thickness sizes available, one of which is much thicker (http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4T488) and perfect for a Pyro. Both sizes are good for a medic or engineer.
Major Producer: Salisbury (Expensive... Ebay?)

A Couple Cheap Links
(Red Kitchen) http://www.surlatable.com/product/id/141396.do
(Blue Nitrile) http://www.labsafety.com/search/ANSELL/42547/
(Long Black) http://www.prosafetyequipment.com/p/277/rubber-gloves.aspx
(Industrial Supplier, large catalog, ships in single pairs) http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/productIndex.shtml?search_type=keyword&QueryString=rubber+glove

Also, if you're a Engineer, a leather gardening/work glove would be far more comfortable than rubber and still look very accurate.

I think you may be better off with something close to this (http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/shoes/mens/dress/PRD~194633/Dockers+Perspective+Dress+Shoes++Wide.jsp) or this (http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/shoes/mens/dress/PRD~257122/Nunn+Bush+Maddox+Shoes.jsp) (too bad these (http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/shoes/mens/dress/PRD~260136/Chaps+Logan+CapToe+Oxford+Shoes.jsp) don't come in black). The spy has fancy-pants Italian style shoes with a low sole and a long profile.

I, personally, though, am just recycling my Madison Boots (http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/9442/c/3.html), which are also useful for Edwardian and steampunk costumes (two genres I like, so hooray for reusable accessories). They are a medium dark, neutral-colored grey. Oddly enough, both the red and blue scouts wear exactly the same colored pants. I just spawned them in gmod -- their only difference is the color of their shirts.

If you just need it for a cutout, there's a decent sized emblem at the Valve store (http://store.valvesoftware.com/tf2/tf2-tee.pyro-mens01.html).

Few things I wanted to ask/point out about the pyro uniform

Gas Mask: has anybody noticed there is writing on the mask? The first text is in tall letters "OPTICAL MASK". The second line is significantly smaller and is illegible (I can't run the game as hi res). I'm thinking that I can cut the letters out of a sticker sheet and stick them on to the mask.

Flash Bangs:I'm guessing those buggers are between 2" - 3" in diameter. I am considering the PVC pipe route as replica flash bangs are hard to come by and are expensive.

I had other things to say, but my ritalin is wearing off.

BUNNIES!!!!

EDIT: Didn't want to double post ->

I have contacted the patch maker and he's going to give me a price estimate and a prototype patch. I know we have a lot of Pyro's here, so I'm going to wait a bit so everyone can get attempt to get an order in. Right now, the patches are looking like $6 a piece ($12 a pair). So if you are a Pyro and you're interested in the patch, give me a holler (via PM) and I'll add you on my list.

I know I haven't posted on this thread in awhile, but I've been literally scrambling around town assisting in trying to get my BLU team's stuff done... ranging from finding apparel close to that odd blue colour to midnight eBay sessions looking for props. #_#

Personally speaking as my group's Demoman, I just have my EOD vest & grenade props to finish and I'm all set(which should be done this weekend if Metrocon tryouts don't consume the whole time). Anyway, getting to the point of this post -- does anyone have a good "sideshot" of Demoman's grenade launcher? TFPortal.de (http://www.TFPortal.de) had some decent low-res screencaps, but they were all at odd angles.

Cool to see so many costumes nearing completion! I've been laid up with a minor injury, but hope to resume fiberglass work on my revised medipack this weekend. If not, then I'm switching to the sapper while I heal up some more.

Finally got the materials for my Spy mask. Working on it tomorrow and most likely ordering the gloves this week as well.

So pretty much, the costume itself is done. I just need to start on the knife.

Edit: My parents made me fill out my FAFSA tonight, so no costume work this weekend. But this week is a 4-day week so I'll try to persuade her for Friday.

My dad just found an old lab coat for me to use so my Medic cosplay ( which I was originally in two minds over) is now going to happen. :)

I'll be wearing this to September's Alcon event though I seriously doubt anyone else, apart from my brother, will be cosplaying TF2.

Despite the rain here locally, I got a lot more parts & costume stuff for my BLU Demoman outfit to be worn at MEGACON'08 next month. Though I have the majority of it gathered, the big work now is getting it actually made like the character... here's a quick head-to-toe progress rundown.

* *

Hat (100%):
Purchased a wool, logo-less watchman's hat/skullie. I also picked up an eyepatch from the local pharmacy, and I'm getting a little better with seeing my surroundings with no depth perception. It's like cosplaying MGS3 Snake all over again -- and coincidentally, at the same convention as before, LoL!

Vest & White Long-sleeve Shirt (45%):
The aforementioned friend of mine had the black fabric and cushioning material already; so we made a paper model of how I wanted the vest to be worn to resemble the Demoman's own. The "Y" harness/bandolier with the 6 grenades should be painted and attached shortly after the vest is done this weekend. I have the two side pouches attached to a pistol belt, but I'm still looking for the front satchel for purchase. Oh, and I have the white long sleeve shirt and the "KA-BOOM!" taunt Mr. Happy smiley too.

Jumpsuit, Boots, And the Rest (70%):
The jumpsuit was purchased first, but I wasn't able to find a new light blue one; so I just went with navy blue instead. Though I got some helpful hints on brightening the colour, I'm not going to bother out of 'fear' that it might become too bright. The Demoman patch will probably be the very last thing added to the costume.
I've got the boots, and the ankle covers will be made by myself while my friend's getting the vest done. I still don't understand why the Demoman has them, but whatever.
Lastly... instead of just carrying around the scrumpy(hard cider)bottle with me, I've opted to try making the grenade launcher (http://www.tf2wiki.net/wiki/Grenade_launcher). I picked up pvc pipes and couplings last night, which I'll cut to shape tonight. I also need to draw out the cut line on the lumber for the stock. Overall, this 'project' has turned out a bit more costly than I figured, especially given how simplistic it seems in screencaps & artwork...

@amethystducky - Huzzah for more medics! Might be the least played class in-game, but damned if Doc ain't popular for cosplay.

Overall, this 'project' has turned out a bit more costly than I figured, especially given how simplistic it seems in screencaps & artwork...

Ah ha ha, oh lord, yes. I look at my workdesk and see all these discarded bits of this and that because things weren't looking stylized enough. Thankfully, I can reuse some stuff for other projects.

And my own update: Since I'm a primarily a props person, I commissioned my redux Medic coat. It should arrive Monday. :D

I repainted the medigun slightly to give it a more worn appearance. Pics later once I find the power cord so I can recharge the battery.

My bonesaw (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/1392689/) has been nearly complete for a while now (just got to dig out some Sculptey for the screws) and I'm putting together the medipack harness this weekend -- I'm trying to rig it so that it looks on-model, instead of being like a backpack (with straps under the arms). It may require an under-harness cheat, but I'm not 100% sure just yet.

Update here, not much has happened. We got the materials for the mask and have pinned it up. Chances are I won't be able to work on it since I need to go to my aunt's house to sew it and we had the huge snowstorm so I don't hink I'll be going anywhere this weekend.

@ Cabbage-Oh;

Me and my brother just typed in " overalls" on google and found this site; Clicky (http://www.ebrookes.co.uk/c/1701/Dickies-Coveralls-and-Jackets.html)

We only really clicked on it because of the funny name :/ but they have some red ones there, can't see any shiny ones though :<. It's a British firm btw.

Friggin' Medics remind me of Ghostbusters now...I keep humming the theme and the "remix" of it from Be Kind Rewind.

Any UK people cosplaying Team Fortress chars? It's just that I doubt they'll be anyone at Alcon, they'll all be Naruto, Inuyasha, etc.

Yea, I'm gonna be going a scout as well. Medic would actually require me to build things. So this will be fairly easier. Plus, if my friend goes, which we plan for him to be a Heavy, then I can call him fatty after I bat a thousand.

BONK!

And the Scout was my first love before the Spy. When I started playing TF2 I already knew my battle plan, "I'm gonna be a master of the classes that no one plays." So I guess I can check that one off since I own as a Spy, lol.

Howdy everyone! I'm that friend Makio (sup pally) refers to in a couple of his posts. He told me about this site and thread, so here I am.

My Scout costume is good to go for Megacon Saturday (Marth 8th). However, I'm tempted to remove the stock lever so I can make a large loop-shaped one that will let me spin-load the gun like he does during the class selection screen; the Scout must've loved watching the Governator in T2... or maybe that old show "The Rifleman" to be consistent with the timeframe. =D (If I could animate, I would love to make a mod that lets me reload the scattergun like that during play)

I posted some photos here. ("http://www.cosplay.com/costume/131984/)

Anyway, this weekend, we're aiming to get completion photos of our group.

It could also be a travel bag for toiletries. Also, consider the flower motifs present in that timeframe (Therefore, you would get a "I don't know," reply from me if you asked what gender the Pyro is).

Makes one think if Valve will keep the gender concealed or not when the video is released.

I hope the pyro is a guy, he just doesn't seem like a girl to me. I think the joke is that he's a "flamer". And whose to say the bag is his? Could have been put there by someone else.

My brother would be most upset if he is a she. :/

I bought my huuueg spotlight today for my medigun, it's a little bigger than I thought it would be ( from the box) but it'll do. And I found some old black work boots to use rather than buying a new pair, though they're not knee high.

Why on GMOD does the Medigun look so odd?

I'm weeble-wobbling between starting up an engineer costume for my friend, whether she wants it or not. I can't even decide which team we're supposed to be on >_< (I have gear for Red and Blu scouts)

HA! i'm sure whichever team you pick for her, your helmet and wrench would be better than the ones my group had for our engineer. although it did make for good laughs.

C'mon now, that was some seriously HARDCORE cosplay going on there. I'm just debating where the hell I'm going to get some non-Fisherprice gear without making it myself.

Well if you decided to engy, I do have patches in the works, so let me know if you're interested.

EDIT: Found the Engy's wrench (http://americanhistory.si.edu/ONTHEMOVE/collection/object_137.html). (Some of you might have already known this. I didn't.)

I made a little health bottle that you find in the game. I think they heal like 15%? It's pretty easy to make and it's accurate too.

On an unrelated note, what does everyone think of the nerf update from 2 nights ago?

i dunno for soldat players, since i don't really play it much...

as for demos, the grenade launchers get used up pretty fast.
no more spawnbombing for me now... :lost:

and for the stickies, tend to place it around my cp or corners to get free kills :crylaugh:

Mmm...curiosity strikes when I'm trying to figure out how to make this bat.

I thought I could use a standard whiffle ball bat (http://www.amazon.com/Wiffle-Ball-Bat-EA/dp/B0000BYRPR/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1204505444&sr=1-3) but it seems not wide enough and too long. Might anyone propose any alternates?

Unless Cabbage wants to help me make a scattergun...>> (I do have an idea for i though.)

You probably want to look for something the size of a t-ball bat (http://www.amazon.com/T-Ball-Bats-Lighweight-Plastic-Sports/dp/B000OQAL0Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1204506594&sr=1-1). That seems to be closer to what the Scout carries.

I did find another one (http://www.amazon.com/CSI-Cannon-Sports-PLASTIC-BAT/dp/B0000BY9LV/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1204505677&sr=1-7) but apparently I can' order i due to the mother claiming I don't have alot of money. But this would look so nice though. Spray paint chrome and athletic tape....look so awesome.

Group update:

We tried taking completion pics yesterday, but our friend ran into trouble with his camera while uploading; so he had to have it looked at today. Better yesterday than next Saturday at least (It would have been worse since he has several photoshoots scheduled for other people).

From what I can gather so far, and nearing the mark for the 8th...

Scout (yours truly) - 100%
Solly and Pyro - We have the arm patches ready and I believe that's it for them.
Demoman - We still need to finish up on his grenade launcher, but everything else is good to go. In case the grenade launcher is a no-go, the bottle it is. (If he can fill it up with booze before hand, I challenged him to take a swig every time someone called our Engy Bob the Builder).
Heavy - We didn't know our friend was going until the last minute. Therefore, it will be a bonus if we can get to make Sasha.
Engy - 100%
Medic - 100%
Sniper - 100%
Spy - Just waiting for his balaclava to be mailed in.

If you're going to make a drinking game, he also needs to swig everytime he hears "KABOOOOM" and your Medic gets E-spammed. XD

Congrats on a full team, though. Wow!

My friend just IM'ed me and his camera is working again. He was able to upload a couple of photos to me, so here are a couple of sneak peeks:

D4rkone: I can totally help you make a scattergun, I'm pretty much done now I just need to paint mine. :D Also! I got my bat at Wal-Mart and covered it in gray and black duct tape. I still wish there was a way to bend it but it's covered in foam. At least it's extremely light.

$10 shipping? WTF?

I got my bat at Toys R Us. I just need to finish sanding it so it doesn't have the lame-o wood pattern.

I can't find red gloves anywhere and I don't particularly want to buy a pair online. I have found some long black rubber gloves and I'm tempted to buy them and look like goth medic :D.

I got my medigun started, and my bonesaw's almost done ^.^

(( btw, I'm having problems with the Engi on GMOD; can't pose his face. Any ideas as to why?))

Well, I've started freaking out a little bit for the sake of my TF2 cosplay. This week heralds both midterms (Automata Theory D:< ) and the month-boundary for the intended convention. I'm only just now drawing up blueprints and buying supplies, and my other project is only two-thirds done!

Next week is spring break, though, and I'll have an entire week of devotion to the Medic props, Sascha, and finally finishing off Ashbringer (http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/5291/ashbringer8nd.jpg). Hopefully I'll have images to share around the 15th. ('ware the ides?)

Also, I've pledged to not buy Smash Bros. Brawl until the costumes are done, which will likely be my single largest motivation.
