Thanks everyone for coming to November's shoot! Our next photoshoot will be in January. For December we're planning a holiday party to be held in Lynnwood.

Date: Saturday, December 15th

Meet-up location:

5:15 - 7:00 Alderwood Mall (http://www.alderwoodmall.com/html/index13.asp) (dinner and shopping)
7:00 - late Lynnwood Bowl & Skate (http://www.bowlandskate.com/) (bowling, roller skating, and gift exchange)

Albertsons 19500 Highway 99 Ste 110 * Lynnwood, WA 98036 (off Hwy 99 and 196th)
Ice Center 19803 - 68th Ave. W * Lynnwood, WA 98036 (off 196th)
Funtasia 7212 220th SW * Edmonds, WA. 98026 (off Hwy 99)
Alderwood Mall 3000 184th Street SW, Suite 145 * Lynnwood, WA 98037
Lynnwood Bowl & Skate 6210 200th Street SW * Lynnwood, WA 98036 (off Hwy 99)

Party stuff
- Dress code is casual/street cosplay or regular clothing. Wear something you can be active in. Wigs and a few small props are okay, but keep it simple. No weapons, big wings, large props, etc. this time. Keep in mind that we are in a crowded public place and there will be families with small children around.
- There will be a White Elephant gift exchange, limit $10. Bring a wrapped gift and hand it to me when you arrive. When we regroup after dinner we'll do the exchange. Anything you want to bring is fine, just make sure it's something you wouldn't mind getting yourself. Cheap is good, tacky not so much (for this exchange).

There, now I'll get instant email notifications of this event as well. I'll start the outward notification circle soon.

And... I fully support this idea of a "Tacoma" based area shoot. Thats great for my travel schedule... ;) I like places around home!! :D

Same here. I like areas closer to home especially since I drive an SUV. >_<

Though I did try to look for places far north but really, other than places open for weddings (and asking an arm, a leg, and a body attached) I just couldn't find any where. But maybe people in the area will have better luck?

I'm just worried if we have a Tacoma based shoot for this one we'd miss out on Zoolights in December.

We'll see what comes up as the best location for December, and how well Tacoma works for everyone. I'd just eventually like to hold a shoot in my home area as well. But that might not be until January or February.

I'll start researching locations up on my end. For now, let's focus on picking the place we'll be at this time.

Zoolights is an event that happens at Point Defiance Zoo. Holiday lights everywhere. The lights move and are in the shape of animals and stuff like that. There's also a machine that makes fake snow now. Huge nutcrackers. It's pretty spiffy.

And I know what you mean Kumi-chan. I'm just unfamiliar with the area and don't know what could be used as a good area to shoot at. Sorry.

Tacoma is a bit far for us but me and my friends will definitely be there! Especially if it's the 17th (since that's my birthday XD!)

Tacoma is a bit of a drive for us as well as we are coming down from Bellingham, but as long as there are good directions provided to whereever we meet, we should be able to make it.

See how I'm being good and not asking for a photoshoot in *my* home area?

Ok.. forget Tacoma then.. obviously it's too difficult to most. I just thought it was a nifty place.
Let's look at more northen options. Yeesh.

Bellingham is a far cry away from us down south. I wouldn't mind, I used to live up in that area (well, Mount Vernon, but close enough).

Heck, let's just all go to Blaine and romp around the Peach Arch Park one of these days.

@Amidoji: Perhaps someday...there's great scenery up in your area. Scout around. let us know if there's a really good location.

@Arissa-chan: Peace Arch, right? :P We might as well just skip over the border and be done with it.

Now, would people prefer Saturday the 17th, or Sunday the 18th? I always have Sundays off, so that's what I prefer, but if I requested ahead of time...depends on what works for the most people. We'd like to figure it out soon, so people can start planning around work and school projects.

I'm borrowing the links you posted, StrawberryLum, so we can take a look at our possible November locations:

W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory: http://www.metroparkstacoma.org/page.php?id=21
Fir Lane: http://www.firlane.com/
Thornewood Castle: http://www.thornewoodcastle.com/index.htm

I'm leaning towards the Conservatory or (if it's not prohibitively expensive) Thornewood. I'm cheap and frequently broke, so cheaper is always better to me.

Hai. Blaine is borderline Canada and Washington. Way up there. Love Semi-Ah-Moo.

However, I would prefer to stick around down here, or really as much away from Burlington as possibly possible.

The castle does seem really awesome. I just don't want people to be troubled by the travel and such.

here are a few places in the Seattle area:

http://www.baconmansion.com/
http://www.starrettmansion.com/
http://sbmansion.com/weddings-in-seattle-wa.htm
http://www.whaleymansion.com/

Though it could get pricey with them.

The conservatory is very pretty though something I didn't take into account, it is very hot. It's a greenhouse. So I would take that into account. >_^

Oh, and Kumi-chan, is it just me or would this make such an awesome pose?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/witchgirl69/cosplay/Urusei_Yasha_XD_by_bagsybabe.jpg
We'd just need an Inuyasha.
(I've been looking for possible poses cause I felt bad going "Uhm.. " when it came to coming up with poses. :-D So, I've found a few possibilities I'm gonna just print up and bring with me because knowing me, I'm going to forget. )

I will look for possible sites, but I don't expect it to really happen. And I'm not too serious about it. It really was more a joke suggestion. I must confess to just being tired of 'Well it's far away from me' as a reason to take things out of the running for ideas of where to go. I know I wasn't the only one from this far north as we had some Canadians at the last shoot. I would object to somewhere in Olympia but beyond that I'm not too picky.

I would love Thronewood even if I will be convinced that the house is going to eat me having watched "Rose Red" too often.

I think the Conservatory would be fun. I think perhaps a greenhouse is the right idea for this time of year. Most of my costumes would get cold quickly outside, but might not be too bad in a green house even if it is a little warm. I wouldn't want to wear Soi Fong's battle outfit outside right now, but might be willing to in a green house.

As for the Saturday or Sunday question I have both off this time around. I still lean towards Sunday, but it doesn't really matter to me.

Arissa-chan

Good thing I don't watch scary movies. :bigtu: Would we have to pay for this photoshoot if we go to teh castle?

And Sundays are iffy. I rely on teh monkey boy for getting me from A to B on the weekends, and with his new job, his days off are very schitzo. Given enough advance warning, he could get the day off on a Sunday.

I need to get my license!!! :bigcry:

Isn't there a Japanese garden south of Seattle somewhere?

When you guys decide the due date lemme know, I live in the Lynnwood [alderwood mall] area and I can give rides tooo. It's not a van so careful with the big props etc, also some help with gas would be appreciated =) I probably have 2-3 seats available.

You mean the Kabuta (Kabuto) Gardens? Grave yard, boarded up haunted house?

Interesting stories from that there area.

1.) I know, I can complain about driving, I hate getting lost and traveling to new places usually results in such. But, I'd be willing to. I really don't mind. Not an issue with me at all. :-D
2.) I don't know if we'd have to pay for the castle, I have to call them, I, for some reason, slept in today and need to give myself a chance to wake up first.
3.) I don't really mind which day though going on a Sunday usually means less traffic, from my experince, as most people do their adventuring on Friday/Saturday.
4.) I have never heard of Kabuta and shall now go make Google tell me about it. ^_^

..edit..checked up on the Kubota gardens, I think it looks beautiful, only problem, they don't have any covered areas by the looks of it and they have one sanican. >_<

Okay, so here's the dillyo (for me anyway). Boss-Lady is pushing to make me manager at work, which is cool 'cause I'd have health insurance again. Problem is, training starts next week and it means my weekends are much less flexible. And one of our girls is gonna be out of town the weekend of the 17th for a wedding.
Bottom line, I'm probably only free on Sundays for November. I know somebody asked about doing Saturday sometime at the shoot, and I know we'll probably eventually have a Saturday shoot. But how about the 18th for November?

I know we like the castle as a location, but I'm beginning to wonder if the Conservatory would be better suited to us. I know we probably won't be as big this time, since we're getting closer to the holidays; Darkain pointed out that one of the reasons we were so huge is that Halloween is coming up and people already had cosplay plans. But we're still going to be a nicely sized group. The castle is a bed and breakfast, right? Which might make indoor shooting a little awkward, since we'd run into other guests. We know the Conservatory is free, too.

I don't know the locations personally, but something that's part of a public park may just work better for us. The Conservatory looked like it was part of the Tacoma Parks system, which probably means nice outdoor locations as well.

@Arissa-chan: Where are you located? I could give you a ride, as I've still got seats available.

The conservatory is a great place we're just limited to time. I'd reccomend getting there a little early (11am?) so that we'd have enough time in the conservatory and out in the park, which is very very nice. (even has a little bridge to help with the "crossing over" theme). I can be the person to call if anyone gets lost, I know the area pretty well as I used to live in the neighborhood. I can also give landmarks so you know if you're on the right track.

And Sunday works for me. Gives me even more time to work on my costumes. (stitches keep hitting the machine when I sew so I'm taking longer to get things done. >_< )

Kumi-chan
10-19-2007, 12:55 AM
Well, it'll probably be getting dark by 4:30 (when the conservatory closes, right?). We'll probably wrap most indoor shooting by then. It can't hurt to show up a bit early, though.

I really do want to get my van decked out for this one. I have the posterboards to decorate according to the theme, and I'm going to look through my mini posters for appropriate stuff to put in the windows. Maybe some plushies (I've got a Rukia around here somewhere). I'd like to turn it into the check-in station, so we can start keeping track of who comes to these things. Some of our photographers need that kind of information.

The park has some wooded areas, right? I've got some ideas for shots for Ryoga. (Starts looking for a map of Japan.)

StrawberryLum
10-19-2007, 01:05 AM
There are a few trees here and there, not really sure about "wooded areas" though I'm pretty sure there's a place near by that's wooded.
There's even some easy to get to eating establishments only a few blocks away from the place.
I'll make sure to get there before everyone so I could basically be the "You are here" person.. if that makes sense. :-)
I'm contemplating grabbing a balloon/sign so it's easier to find.. plus I think it'd be cool cause I'm a nerd like that.

Kumi-chan
10-19-2007, 01:21 AM
Make sure it's a red balloon. ^^ *Thinking of Sixth Sense*

Okay, I've had my system down all day today due to weather conditions... I'm back now, and have had a chance to skim over the posts here that I've missed, and now its time to put my $500 worth of "two cents" into this whole idea of "planning"

The conservatory inside of Wrights Park in Tacoma. I know that park extremely well, as that was my "local hangout" as a kid. The place has tons of pretty flowers on the inside, but is also humid as hell. It will be a little bit of a pain to have cameras on the inside, as they tend to fog up quite easily. Knowing this in adance though, people with cameras can prepare for this sort of condition.

Next, the conservatory building itself is just a green house. Its not all that large, so having the whole group inside at once probably will get crouded (unless we're much MUCH smaller then last time, say, 15-ish would work well).

The park on the other hand is quite a decent size. Its nice and large actually. It might not be quite as large as Gasworks Park, but then again, we basically stuck to one specific location there anyways. There are some quite interesting things to use as backdrops around the park too, such as two lion statues, plenty of TALL trees, and some small buildings.

Also.... a place that I've been dieing to do a shoot at is about 3-ish blocks away from the park... I don't know what kind of public access the grouds will have, but its probably the most beautiful building in the entire state.... Staduim High School! If you want an out-door castle shoot, this would probably be the place to go.

As for Saturday vs Sunday, I'll stick with Kumi on this one. Sunday it is. C'mon, where would we be without our fearless leader? ;)

OH!! I almost forgot!!!

1) I'll probably swing by the park sometime in the next week or two just to get a few sample shots of the locations in that area. Its only like 2-3 miles from my house, so its no biggy for me.

2) PARKING!! The park has NO parking lots. The only thing is has is curb-side parking... So, depending on how busy things get, this might be a hassle.

3) Because the park is sooo close to me, I'll be competing with StrawberryLum to see who can arrive first. ;) (btw: strawberries are my most yummiest favouritest thing EVER!!)

Anyone who thinks they may need directions help, please feel free to PM me or IM me, and I'll give ya my cell number.

Once plans settle down just a little bit more, I'll start putting out the mass public notices.

I love strawberries too, hence the name (it's a play on my favorite candy type thing-Strawberry Gum and of course my fav anime charcter-Lum. ;-) )
I am so getting there first.. don't make me camp out there!
You know.. for a wooded area, there's always the park by the Tacoma Dome..I can't remember what it's called and if it's actually called Tacoma Dome park I'm gonna feel stupid. Anyway, the place has an awesome wooded area, that park was my hang out, at one point there was half a hand made shelter my friends and I made. Very pretty.
And Stadium High is very pretty, so is Lincoln high as it used to be a theatre and all.
Tacoma actually has some decent beauty I never realized. :-Þ

BLARG!!! Not doing Lincoln for anything special EVER! I look out my window and see it on a daily basis (Yeah, now you know about where I live....) Thats my "casual" spot, not a place I'd consider for group shoots.

Hey guys,
I live in the Kent area and am very familiar with the Puget Sound area. Alot of lovely places have been mentioned but like Thornewood Castle, they are privately owned and probably would not want people on their property unless it is pre arranged and paid for. FYI, my husband and I were looking into this place for our wedding.

Point Defiance Park in Tacoma has a lot great public places. We were married at the Japanese Garden and Pagoda although it was paid for (expensive. ^_^;) However, during the off season (now) although the buildings are not always open to the public, the gardens are beautiful. Also, Point Defiance has a recreation of the original fort which is also open to the public.

There are other Japanese gardens in the Puget Sound area, but many are paid admission due to the fragile nature of the settings, ie. no climbing up trees or walking through the bushes, etc.

You can check out the Metro Parks Department for more locations spots:
http://www.metrokc.gov/parks/
many of them have covered areas that can be rented or are free to the public like Gasworks.
Also Pierce County (Tacoma Area)
http://www.co.pierce.wa.us/pc/services/recreate/fac-list.htm

And in Lakewood (just south of Tacoma)
http://www.cityoflakewood.us/department-pages/lakewood-parks.html#steilacoom
Steilacoom Park would be an interesting place to have pictures. There is a large pond/ small lake, lots of grass fields, etc. Right across the street from Western State Hospital.

Where I live in Kent, there are several nice parks as well. (Kent is between Seattle and Tacoma) right next to Renton.
Earthworks Park has some neat geography like moats and mounds. The local renfaire: Canterbury Fair used to be held there.
Wilderness Park is also another option. There's also Kaibara Park near Kent Station that is a small Japanese park with a koi pond, close to the library.

I was just thinking that the old one within the park grounds is probably gone by now considering all the renovation at the park. It was pretty creepy. Although it was fenced off, people would go inside and drink and tag the old structure. Yea, it definitely had a weird stay away vibe to it.

This place? Doesn't look like it. :-)

One day.. this place would be an awesome location.

It is three-four year old site. Is there anything more recent to be found?

I agree, exploring and photo shooting at this place would be interesting indeed.

Okay, so I'm going to put Sunday the 18th in the head post. I'll leave noon as our official start time, but I'm sure that some of us (me among them, hopefully) will be there earlier. I just hope there are no issues on my end. Sundays they only need one manager-type at work...and I just had my interview today, which means I may be an assistant manager by the time the shoot rolls around. Which might cause conflict, but I hope not. Boss-Lady knows how important these are to me, I'm pretty sure she'll do what she can.

Crowding/parking issues...well, as always, carpool if you can. Are there any parking lots within walking distance that we could use? Someplace where they won't tow us for using the lot?

Gah...still need a backpack for Ryoga. An extra-large camping backpack in light brown. Don't know where I'm going to find it where it's not gonna cost me a bundle ($40 is my limit, I think).

I have a regular "east" something or other backpack, I'd have to fix the zipper though, if it'd even work for you. >_^ If you have an example of the bag?
Parking shouldn't be too bad, there's parking lining the streets. No lots near by that I know of but again, the most you'd have to walk is about two blocks and the blocks in the area aren't too bad. (if you have a lot to carry you could always make sure there's someone from the group there, leave stuff with a trusted member then park real quick)

I had a kinda cool idea >.< We could find a park near one of the locations ... Then we meet up at the free park hang out and talk a bit a move to the one of the pretty paid locations for shots at the location? That way we still get to hang out and do our own thing with the oppurtunity for cool pics at the end >.<

Hello all! ^^ I had an awesome time at the last meet-up and will deffinitly try to hit up this one as well :) I will even have my hitsugaya cosplay done by then! And my honey-sempai and Haruhi from OHSHC! XD

We were a tad late getting to this last one (was held up for about an hour at the border) so will try to be there by 12 but depends how easy it will be getting into the states.... we even took the earliest ferry possible from Vancouver Island to the mainland (5:45am >.<)

dojo: It would seem, at this stage, we'd rather not pay for a location as they seem to be rather costly. Maybe at some point.. when we stop being poor (will this ever happen? -_^) we can rent a place out but really, they seem rather pricey. The few places I did find had weird setups and then, as mentioned, were arm and leg expensive.

TseUq: If need be you would be able to crash at my place. You'd have a "time to be quiet" time only because someone (only one, my mom and are lazy little bums) goes to work at like 7am and so, we'd have to be all quiet and respectful and such.
And I should have my room/sewing area cleaned up by then.. maybe.. ¬_¬
But so yeah, if you decide to come up the day before and you need sleeping space, let me know.

TseUq: We're in Bellingham and willing to lend out a slightly uncorfortable Hide-a-bed. Just in case, say, you can't get off too early the day before, but still want to get across the border. So, you'd only have part of the drive the next day. We could let you crash here. Or as somewhere the night after and drive the rest of the way the second day.

I'm hoping to get Arrancar Gin done and my Soi Fong fixed and will have both with me. Haven't thought of anything else I want to bring to "Crossing Over" yet.

Okie doke, no problem.
If anyone has a Hancock's Fabric near them I would totally go over there tomorrow. They have such good prices going on. So if you need to finish up a costume I'd book it over there.
Should I spend more money on fabric? No. Will I? Hecks yes. :-)

Oh, and is anyone intrested in a multiple location shoot for this one? Like Darkain mentioned there's Stadium High only a couple blocks away and then I propose a stop by the park near the Tacoma Dome. It's a bit further, maybe 2 miles or so. But it's really pretty. Wooded area and such.

Which park by the Tacoma Dome? Where is it located in relation to the dome? (I live pretty close to it, and I'm drawing a blank)

And while chatting with Kumi tonight, she seemed pretty cool about the Stadium idea. I'm not too sure about traveling elsewhere that would require more then foot travel though.

Also something else to keep in mind is coordination with others who may not be showing up at the same time as everyone else. It would suck for people to show up after we've already moved to a new location.

I propose that if we're going to do some sort of multi-location thing, that we have a SET TIME SCHEDULE for each location, and we try to stick to it. While yes, this does put time constraints on ourselves, it should also help to keep us all organized and on track.

StrawberryLum
10-21-2007, 05:10 AM

Only issue is, if we wait until the Conservatory closes, it'll be getting darkish. I don't think Darkain will mind, as he's expressed interest in nighttime photography. However, the rest of us who have less cool equipment might have issues getting photos.

Perhaps we could change locations at three? That should give everybody enough time to arrive at the conservatory and get photos there, and still get us to our next location (which one, I'm not sure yet) before it starts to get dark.

Wuss. :P

How's this sound: We start gathering between 11:00 and noon. Starting a little after 12:00, we split into a couple of groups (cosplays from the same series will probably group together). Group "A" can shoot at the conservatory and surrounding grounds while group "B" ventures to the high school for photos. After a set amount of time, an hour perhaps, "B" returns and takes their turn at the conservatory, while "A" can take their turn at the high school. If you'd prefer to stay at the conservatory the whole time, that's fine. This way, there will always be members of the gathering at the conservatory to meet any late-comers.
At three, anyone who wishes to visit McKinley Park (by the stadium) can join the caravan headed that direction.

StrawberryLum
10-21-2007, 07:26 AM
Sounds good. And photograghers can go back and fourth (because it really isn't that far) so they can get shots of their preferred charcters at their preferred location.
And if people are worried about possibly getting there past three, which can happen but still want to have a bit of a shoot at McKinley park, they could call and find out how to get there if they're unsure. (Tacoma can be a pain sometimes)

@Arissa-chan: Do you need cat-form Kyo? Because I've got him. He's full-size, though. I've also got Yuki.

@StrawberryLum: Sweet! The question is, can you lift it over your head?

Picked up yellow faux fur. I'm making a warmer version of the bikini for Lum (hopefully done by this Saturday, but we'll see). I'm doing the stripes myself and everything. I'll finally have accurate boots! And a top I don't have to glue down to keep in place. Don't know that I'll do the uniform version again; with all the other costumes I'm doing, I don't know that I'll have the time.

May not make Kagome's outfit, simply because I don't know that I have the funds or time. We'll see.

Yes, teh animal forms of Yuki and Kyo. I have the small Yuki. It'd just be cool to have the small Kyo to go with it. :ttothy:. If you want to donate for teh photoshoot, that'd be great, if I can't get the other in time.

I finally read up on the crossplay section about flattening a chest (I never thought it could be possible with a DD). But, my female forms will remain the same, I don't want to go out and buy a lumbar (I believe) strap thing and practically rebuy the whole wardrobe. I might chop up the wig I got for Yuki, I'm still undecided. I might just leave it as the bob it came as.

I'm working on the lifting above my head thing. I can get to a crouching position right now, just gotta straighten up. :-)
I'll have to get up the nerve to wear my Lum bikini (I now have my pink version and I made the normal version, though they're shorts instead of the normal bottoms because I'm not tres skinny.) But if you end up not bringing your school uniform I'll at least bring my pink/normal Lum outfits so we can some sort of "mirror" pics. (My idea must come to life.. it muuuuuuusssst. ¬_¬ :- D )

Kumi-chan
10-24-2007, 12:00 AM
Actually, I'm doing the new bikini with boy-short type bottoms, less of the regular swimsuit style I've got on my old one. I've never been completely happy with the styling on the bottoms I did.

I'm happy with the fabric, because now I can actually do the jagged/raggedy edges. On the stretch velvet, they just curled under.
If I have enough fabric (and I think I do) I'm going to make a flesh-color top out of double-layer lining. Then we can do shots from the first episode. Ataru just needs a toy dart gun or something.

Just don't hurt yourself with lifting the desk! "Lift from the knees!"

StrawberryLum
10-24-2007, 01:09 AM
But I want a hyrneia! (always thought it was a boy type afflection, I found out wrong when one of my chick friends had one)
That would be a freaking funny shot. If you don't have enough nude fabric you could always use a nude colored bra if you got one.
What kind of fabric did you get? I found an actual yellow tiger stripped fabric but couldn't find just yellow faux fur. (as it is the stripes on the faux fur I got were grey, not black, so I had to go over it with paint)
At some point I want to make an actual working swimsut type version of her outfit and a vinyl version, if only just cause it'd look cool.

Kumi-chan
10-24-2007, 02:45 AM
It's just plain golden yellow faux fur, low-pile so it's not too thick. One thing I don't like about some Lum bikinis is that the fur just looks too long to me. The stuff I got is fairly thin for fake fur (it's also cheaper, which is nice). For the stripes, I'm making them out of felt and sewing them on, so I can make them look accurate. Especially on the boots, because they look a very particular way there.

I've actually got more than enough nude-colored fabric. Originally I was going to line both the top and bottoms with it, but then I cannabalized one of my bras for the top, so it doesn't need to be lined anymore. I'm sewing the fur to the bra instead.

StrawberryLum
10-24-2007, 04:12 AM
For my pink one I got this really expensive faux fur type stuff. It's zebra print so I had to dye it, not as impossible as they say to dye 100% polyester. I do agree that the stripes look a certain way and at some point, when I stop being lazy, I'll probably make the stripes perfect, but really, I figure, as long as it's stripped (I've seen spotted >_<) and the right color then all is well.
I tried the sewing to the bra thing, I failed.. I failed a whole lot. I ended up just making loops and putting clear bra straps on as my chest seems to not like simple strapless bras. It's such a pain as it means no strapless dresses and such for me unless I wear a full corset. ;_;

They won't miss me, besides the last meeting someone at the meeting got me sick, so I'm kind of scared to go back unless I wear a face mask.

Already have the blouse and white fleece for the pattern on the skirt, so I'm going for it. Yay for $8 cosplay! Well, maybe a couple bucks more, since I want bigger buttons on the sweater, but still, super cheap and very little sewing for a brand new costume.

Also, I got my Ichimaru Gin wig styled. I might add some more grey to it as it is still rather white. Almost have my hakama remade (I'll have those done by Halloween so I can wear Soi Fong).

Ya know, I've been reading through these threads quite a bit and just realized I overlooked a very convenient location for future (cold) months. At the place I live we have everything imaginable; heated pool, gym, mini-golf course (very basic, no animatronics or other craziness) and a community center that can be rented out.
Said community center can hold 150 people, is fully furnished with couches and tables, has a kitchen, wierd mural of a park setting in one corner and even a room with a pool table. And it costs $15 to rent out for a day! The courtyards also have plenty of greenery for outdoor shots. The downside is it's booked through the end of the year, but could currently be snagged for January or February. If interested, lemme know, because spending hundreds on location is crazy, but $15?
On a completely unrelated note, anyone interested in Poker and/or sanctioned (earn points, results posted online) game tournaments in the Seattle area should check here: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=105417

Labyrinth has its own manga now...definitely counts. And not in the "Harry Potter has doujinshi, so it counts!" way either. (It's called "Return to Labyrinth", and I've seen it at Barnes and Noble.)

'Course, there's both Star Wars and Star Trek manga out now. The Star Wars one was really cool, a different artist for each movie in the original trilogy so each volume had its own art style. And then you get to the Star Wars Clone Wars animation, which was completely obviously anime-inspired.

Short answer: Wear whatever the heck you want. Within reason-- no offensive symbols; cover what needs to be covered, aka bathing suit at the least; if your weapon, especially firearm-type weapon, can be mistaken for real from across the room, rethink it, we don't want Tacoma police breaking up our party. Basic con rules, but I'd like to think we're less strict when it comes to nudity. As long as you're not going to get arrested for public indecency (whatever the official title is) it should be cool.

This is off topic and random, But I had a photo idea hit me recently and I wanted to post it before I forgot.

I know that some poeple are thinking of translating "crossing over" to characters who die and/or are dead. I think it would be "cross-over" and cool to have a photo of any of our Soul Reapers or Shinigami leading the dead characters to afterlife.

Just a thought, but I wanted to shoot it out here before I forgot it.

You could try getting face paint and putting it on your eyebrows.

I usually don't bother making my eyebrows matching my wig, because I'm one of those people whose eyebrows are naturally a different color than their hair. My hair is strawberry blonde, but my eyebrows are black. So if my eyebrows are a different color than my hair, there's no reason why the character's can't be as well.

Yay! Just got next week's schedule and I definitely have Sunday off! I was getting worried...they've been giving me every Monday and Tuesday off, but with the holidays jumping down our throats and me now confirmed as a manager...and I know a couple other people requested the day off. One of them is actually out of town for about a week, so she's definitely unavailable.

I was beginning to feel antsy. I always do when I request time off, even though I rarely do it so I'm more likely to get my few requests granted. I start to feel guilty and horrible for asking them to accomodate my silly hobbies. They mean a lot to me, but still...nerdy obsessions are hard to justify to the retail overlords. Or at least that's how I feel about it.

Yeah, yeah, boring. Due to the increase in my workload and familial issues putting more stress on me than usual, I have done nothing costume-wise over the past couple weeks. Nothing new is ready to go. I'm probably doing Akane instead of Ryoga, simply because I want to and I have new flat Mary Janes to wear with her (and Ryoga's not done; the sewing muses hate me right now).

Also, yay for van being fixed. I can have both the headlights and the tail-lights on at the same time now! I owe my dad about $400, but that I can deal with. What does that have to do with the shoot? Nothing, unless you're riding with me. Now I can drive at night, which means I can stay for the whole thing.

Hi guys. A big thank you to all of you that were there. I was the one in the costume of an asian guy trying to grow a mustache/goatee thingy T_T, (olive hat thingy, eye glasses, brown top, grey pants) while trying to take photos there. That was my first time at such an event, and I was a guest of a dear relative of Amidoji, she also gave me tips and notes on how not to be some rude photo ninja (wapah!) and to aim to take photos that showed people in action in their costumes/in a good light. Sadly my camera was rather slow and might capture many seconds later.. so some photos will not pass the editing process.

I just wanted to say thank you for all your patience (with my slow camera) and suggestions on what to (or at least attempt to) take pictures of. I'm tight on time so I apologize for not having any of the photos uploaded. But as soon as a good number of them are up. I'll send Amidoji a link to an unlisted gallery so you guys can comment or ask a photo to be taken off or cropped if you find it unflattering or don't think that is how you want your costume displayed (I won't be offended).

Amidoji and the relatives went through most of the pics I took and pointed out some that captured things that were definitely not intended or could be misinterpreted. Fortunately it wasn't that many as I tried to be careful what I took or/and moved away if an action shot might accidentally reveal something. However the tiny tiny screen could only show so much while on site. And don't worry what will be put on the link will be tasteful (though I thought the feyith securing that young lad who was about to be duct taped was tasteful (note do not do that at home. only let professionals do that. ;) so that will be there.). This is probably a long winded introduction and there won't be that many pictures on my end but I thought it was just something I had to say. Fortunately you had lots of other people with cameras, with much skill, so no worries. ^_^

Anyways big digression. I hope you all have a wonderful week and much sleep. Again thanks a bunch. You guys are great.

Lots of great costumes. I'll post something more meaningful tomorrow, but I've got work in the morning, so I'll go now.

Oh, and about next month...we did talk about this at the end of the meet-up. It's possible that we won't have a photoshoot for December, maybe just a get-together. It's a really busy month for a lot of us.
If we do something, I'm thinking a cold-weather/winter or possibly streetwear theme. Something that we could wear to go someplace and do something (like bowling or the arcade ^_^).

In any case, the next big shoot is probably going to be in January, once the holidays are over. Likely we'll be looking for an indoor location. I'd appreciate y'all coming up this direction, so I'm going to start scouting Lynnwood/Edmonds/Mill Creek.

I had a lot of fun and I wish that I could have stayed longer and gone to the mall or whatever, but I had to give my friend a ride home.

If the next shoot does have a cold weather/winter theme, I guess my Fai costume will be returning. I was actually pretty comfortable in it, except for when my chest-binding bandages started to slip down after a couple hours. At least they lasted longer than they did on Halloween, though, so I guess I did a better job this time. I would have gone in the restroom to adjust the or something, but apparently there was a homeless person sleeping in the ladies' room. >>;

Things I learned or thought about at Gasukan 2:

I asked Darkain to take some pictures of me. He asked "What do you want" and I didn't know. That was dumb. I should have some ideas for nifty pictures. We'll probably both get more ideas as we go along, but starting from nothing like that was pretty lame.

I snapped pictures whenever I remembered to, which was mainly when something big happened, and everyone was already taking pictures. I won't improve my photography by doing that. I should take pictures on purpose, setting up poses, finding good angles, retaking pictures I know didn't turn out, and so on.

I would have liked to talk to everyone there, but I totally failed. However, it would be really hard to have 20-something conversations with a variety of acquaintances and strangers, so I don't feel too bad about it.

A couple of people were new to the group and had cameras but no costumes. I can see how that would be awkward, since I love dressing up and would feel foolish if everyone else dressed up but me. But the camera makes people like you and gives you an excuse to talk to them. Ask to take a few pictures of someone, and you'll probably have fun together. At least, that would work on me. I don't know everyone, so there may be someone who doesn't want his picture taken by a stranger.

I need to take steps to preserve Faust's bag in cold weather, just as I do in hot weather.

I need the fake bolt cutters, fake magnet, tape measure, paintbrush, and paperclip for the next gathering. It won't do to wait until the next convention.

OmegaLord: AnJin was amazing. The civilian version of Jin was also cool, though less showy. Also, you need to watch Evangelion immediately.

feyith: Years from now, when you're a well-respected and important member of the community, those pictures (and that part of your last post) will return to haunt you! Also, it seemed like every time I turned around someone was taking your picture.

Those two people who chained themselves together and apparently don't post here: I am impressed by the wide range of physical activities you can undertake together without serious injury.

Kumi-chan: Thanks for organizing the event.

ZOMG, your eyehole keeps changing sides! I'm so confused!

Hmm...I like the idea of the Lynnwood skating rink. Particularly since it's in Lynnwood. ^_^

We could also go to Funtasia on the same day. It's a mile or two from the skating rink and has minature golf, lots of games, laser tag and batting cages.
(Why am I suddenly thinking of a game/sports theme? Like "Game Face" or "Get Your Game On".)

I like the skating rink idea too. Even though it's a bit of a drive for me [as opposed to this shoot which was only like 15-20 minutes from my house], I like going up to Lynnwood. Because the Alderwood Mall is pretty much the best mall in Western Washington, as far as I have observed. And I like ice skating. As long as it isn't the seasonal rink at Seattle Center, because that one kind of sucks.

-loves all over Darkain's photos-

I had a couple ideas for poses and stuff that I didn't get to do, partially because I had to take my friend home, but my Fai costume will be making a return at some point in the future so I don't mind waiting. [Especially if it snows this winter, at which point I'm going to put it on and drag one of my parents/my sister/a random neighbor outside to take pictures of me.]

You'll see me (jelly-straw girl) hopefully next shoot, and understand why I'm, rather, dubbing myself that (for now!). Teh Monkey boy probably won't be in Monkey boy costume (those who did see him may have noticed how baggy the costume was) (there are lots of pictures I still haven't shown him yet...want to find one of him shimmying up teh pole). More than likely he may become known as "that Alex Rou dude" or something.

But, it's okay. My point is: there's the following shoots to find out.

I hope someone posts a pic of the back of my costume eventually. I remember posing for like three different people to do so, and after I showed my friends Darkain's pics I got requests for one showing the back of my coat. Next time I'll try to take some pictures rather than leaving my camera in the hands of a friend who would rather stand off to the side listening to his iPod rather than actually use the camera. I have a picture of the back of your costume. It's from one of the by-standers. She was the 'the Lady at the Conservatory.' My father sucessfully exchanged contact info with her so I have about eight or so of her pics. However, I don't want to post them here on C.C so here's an offsite link.

So...

Time's tickin' away...

What's next?

Next up would be a holiday get-together (not photo shoot) sometime in the month of December. We're talking about the Lynnwood Ice Center, near Edmonds Community College. There's also a bowling alley within a mile of it and Funtasia, a game center, a couple miles away. We have to decide on an exact day, time, and schedule (if we want to go to more than one place on that day) so start making suggestions!

The bowling alley is within a five minute drive of where I work, so I'm going to check them out tomorrow and see if they have an arcade like the one in Tacoma did.

Would anyone be interested in a White Elephant gift exchange? Limit of $10?

Bredward
11-28-2007, 10:33 PM
We could do like a manga exchange or something, where everyone interested in participating could bring the first volume of one of their favorite series and everyone could pick numbers to determine which one they get. That way people could broaden their manga-reading horizons by being introduced to a new series.

Usually weekends work out beeest b/c for people in school there are issues of finals/projects etc ...and for those who work, i assume most people work on weekdays?
Also if it's planned to far into december, people might be going off on some winter vacation.

Btw there's a group discount. But you need to call ahead of time.
Actually it's a good idea to call in and find when they do the music + special lights, it makes skating more fun ^^ [no one can see you fall if the lights are turned off!]

There's a new restaurant around the alderwood area called Blue C Sushi, anyone heard of it? The interior is awesome. There's this projector on the wall that shows anime the last time i went. I believe they were showing megaman? Oh and there are cool buttons you can press to call up for assistance, pretty awesome. Not sure about the sushi though =\

Bredward, if you can help out with gas I'd be willing to make the trip. I just feel bad driving an empty SUV all the way to Lynwood and back. lol
The 15th would work for me. Also I'd be willing to do a white elephant gift exchange or some such thing. Though it would be a bit more organised then just randomly getting something for a random person, right? Like the organizer could make a simple survey type thing and then randomly sort people in what ever decided way. The people would get the survey answers that would help with an idea of what to get but they still wouldn't know who they got the gift from.

I don't drive and I would feel bad having my mom drive me all the way up there and back, and I'm hesitant to try and get one of my friends to go with me since the guy who went to the last shoot with me seemed pretty tired/bored the whole time.

Just an FYI: I might have to sit this one out... I'm not really sure I could manage "skating" with my recent conditions.

As far as even more forward looking though: would someone care to check into Chibi-Chibi-Con '08 for a possible meeting grounds? In '07 it was pushed back a couple weeks late, therefor held in March... but if its in Feb next year, that could be a good location for that time. As far as January is concerned, I'd personally vote for maybe something around Seattle again, possibly downtown area? Could be an "urban" theme or somethin...

StrawberryLum
11-29-2007, 05:55 AM
Okie doke, Bredward, you can definitly hitch a ride with me. (I have to remember to clean out my car this time, it's been my temp "storage unit". >_^)
And Darkain, you should definitly come. You could hang out off the ice. Chat with those not skating at the moment or we could always find a venue that isn't quite as difficult. Perhaps the mentioned bowling alley? They may have midnight bowling type of thing.
An urban theme could be cool.
It's so weird. There is a place I think would make a good photoshoot area but it's a post office. lol They converted this huge awesome old old building into a PO. It has a huge lobby and the exterior is awesome as well. When I was looking for the PO I couldn't tell it was a PO there was no sign or anything. It's just so random. But very nifty.

Oh, and this may seem an obvious question, but, Kumi, will this event be cosplay dress-code type of thing or is it "casual"? It'd be sort of weird to show up in a costume to find it's casual dress. :-)

Darkain
11-29-2007, 06:11 AM

Stupid, sheltered little me, but what is a white-elephant gift exchange?

Cosplaying on ice? I think casual wear would be best for me...though I'm not too fond of ice skating, to be quite honest. I'd probably just end up being a wall"flower" and watch everyone else. I'd love to go bowling, though.

Emotional me/inner Sakura moment: I hate feeling like the "Karen" in any gathering I go to (I've only been to one with you guys, but still). (Dane Cook fans, you know what I speak of). I really need to get social and out there with you guys, but I don't want to scare anyone. Darn introverted, feeling-centered me. (INFP, for you myers-briggs peeps).

Okay, emo time is over. :toothy:

As for manga exchange (must re-read for full details), I only have Fruits Basket (1-I forget, it's in the teens somewheres), the first Trinity blood, the first Love Hina the novel, and Chobits (1-3). Dunno if I'd want to switch with anyone (Well, maybe the LH novel). I'm pretty possesive about my manga.

11-29-2007, 01:46 PM
Whoa, so much posting in so little time! Okay, I'll see what I can answer/respond to.

Caught my eye...yes, they just put in a Blue C Sushi at the Alderwood Mall. I was there the other day. It's slightly more expensive than Sushiland/Marineopolis, which is the only other kaiten-zushi (conveyor-belt sushi) place I've been to, but not unreasonable. If you've never been to those kind of places, it's really easy to keep the cost of your meal down because you pay by the plate, and they're color-coded so you can easily keep track of how much you're spending. Most plates are in the $1.50 - $2.75 range. It was cool, they play anime on a movie-style screen (kiddie stuff, so as not to offend passers-by I'm guessing). Santa stopped by on his break on Monday. ^_^

Dress code. I'm thinking casual cosplay. As in street-wear style. It doesn't have to be an actual outfit for the character, maybe even something inspired by their style. I'm doing a red and green outfit inspired by Akane's style, and something for P-chan, probably reindeer antlers like the kind some horrid people put on their pets ;P It's something that will be easy to move around in, perfect for skating and gaming.

White elephant gift exchange. Best explained here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_elephant_gift_exchange. It's a lot of fun, actually, especially with the amount of "stealing" that goes on.
Exchanging manga's not a bad idea, but I like the flexibility of making it up to the individual what they bring. Check out stores like the Daiso for good Japanese gifts for cheap. Also good for cheap, cute wrapping paper and gift bags, since one of the points of the white elephant exchange is that nobody knows what the gifts are until they're unwrapped.

Bringing the first volume of your favorite series is a good idea, though since I know that I'm quite possessive of my books, I'd suggest buying a new copy at the bookstore (probably what the original poster of the idea meant). For one thing, if it's your favorite series, it probably has some wear on it.

Doing the gift exchange doesn't mean you can't bring other stuff. It's a party game. I plan on making little bags of homemade cookies and candy for everyone, and if you've got friends you'd like to give something special to, go right ahead. It's just a way of making sure everybody leaves the party with at least one gift they can enjoy.

So 15th sounds good to people? Hmm...would we want to meet early in the day, about noon, at our first location? My idea about the schedule is:

A) noon- skating rink, meet up, hand W.E. gifts over to the main organizer, a couple of games
2:00- move on to bowling alley (very close by), play; at the end of our time there, White Elephant exchange
5:00- Head to dinner location
Throughout- private gifts exchanged

B) Same, but we meet at the bowling alley at noon, skip the skating rink, and will probably go to dinner earlier (maybe at 4:00). This is the cheaper option. I still have to see about the games they have there, as I've never visited this bowling alley before. Not everyone cares for bowling, so I'd like to make sure there's something for everyone to enjoy.

For either option, carpooling is most definitely a good idea. Christmas shopping season means that parking will be limited, especially at the mall. Especially on a Saturday.

Arissa-chan
11-29-2007, 06:31 PM
I vote on teh cheaper option...Christmas shopping hit me hard this year (especially since I have more money to spend). And I'm still not done.

Aw, the 15th? Heh, I leave the day before to go home for the holidays, so I won't be making it next month. =( Oh well, have fun you guys. I'll definitely be at the January gathering then. =)

You might have to schedule around the iceskating b/c the rink has certain times for public skate sessions. I checked their schedule but they haven't updated that far.
It would be nice to make it the first event of the day, that way people who don't want to go can skip it and meet up later at like the bowling alley or something.
And for casual cosplay, it'd be best to wear something that doesn't rip easily if you fall or something ^^ not saying that people will fall...and if anyone doesn't know how to skate, i can give lessons =D
Pricing should be $8.50 per person [including skate rentals] if at least 10 people show up. Otherwise it's $10 per person. Bring quarters to open lockers or you can stash stuff in my trunk. Pricing's not that bad, it's like the cost of a movie, except it's more interactive.

Bowling alley: I went there once for a bday party. The girl made reservations for 25 people and they said "okay"...and when we arrived, the people "denied" us access? It was quite a weird situation. Might wanna call in beforehand too. I believe it's a joint bowling alley + rollerskating? I don't remember if there was an arcade, maybe a small one.

Dinner: if you guys were planning to visit Blue C Sushi, just a heads up that they don't accept separate checks. Um let me reword. They *do* accept separate checks, just no more than 4. It's odd. Not sure if this is going to be a problem...

And arissa chan: i was wondering the same thing, when you talked about introverts! I'm afraid to bring some of my friends along because they're quite shy. I have only been to like 1 photoshoot, not sure if you guys did something like introductions/icebreakers? It would make the new people feel more comfortable. Upon observing the photoshoot at gasworks, it seems that everyone already knew each other?

Darkain: what condition prevents you from iceskating? is it a foot problem? my friend had an instep problem we solved by bringing those gel things you stick in shoes.

Secret santa: if you guys wanted to do secret santa, might wanna get started soon to give people time to go shopping ^^

Yeah, when I suggested the manga thing I meant that people could buy new copies so they don't have to part with their own. [Or people who at some point bought the first volume of a series and decided that they didn't like it could give it to someone else who might enjoy it more.] I thought of manga since she had suggested a limit of $10 and most manga cost about that much.

I vote for option A because I like the ice skating idea. I enjoy ice skating more than bowling, and I haven't been ice skating in like a year.

I think that I'll probably wear my walolita dress. Which means I'd better start sewing that...

I think I might bring cookies or something too. And I seem to have an overabundance of chocolate Pocky.

@Feyith: I am. I've been meaning to get more of the Buffy/Angel comics.

@StrawberryLum: I'll PM you my address, or we can figure out somewhere to meet closer to the date of the meet-up.

I definitely like option A, mainly for the ice skating. X3!

And if I remember to get around to it I will bring some snack-y foods as well. XD;

I'd vote for option b. I know I'd like to save money (as I'm sure others will too) and I dun wanna bust myself up again. ¬_¬ Yeah, I'm a wussy.
And I would love to go to the Alderwood mall at some point during the gathering (even after darn it :-P) because I no longer have a Disney store near me and I have been searching for a certain Alice in Wonderland item since I saw it listed on ebay. (yes.. off topic but uhm.. *points* something shiney!)
Arissa, chu know me! I'll harrass you and you can harrass me! ^_^
I would be more out there but I never know anyone and if I know absolutly no one I feel sort of rude butting into convos. I tried at this most recent shoot. I did. Sort of failed. Oh well, lol.
If ya need, Darkain, you can carpool with me, like Bredward said, blackmail photos are definitly needed. lol
I'm a Drusilla fan, does that count as being an Angel fan? She was in a few episodes.
Bredward: If you're not too far off the beaten path I could pick you up at your place so go ahead and PM me and we can plot and plan and such. Always best to figure things out far in advance. Yep.

I have to withdraw the offer I made on page 8 for the location in Bellevue for upcoming cold months. It's now been reserved through March!
It seems I'll get to work 7 days a week again pretty soon to get stuff out in time, so...

Have fun!
