Hi everyone!

It's that time of year where I plan my upcoming Katsucon photos, and i realise that they are all short skirts. >_< So I plan to be kicking my 'workout routine' (see also: 'Drinking wine and eating goat cheese and finding reasons to avoid the gym') into high gear!

I know that I do much better with everything with a buddy, and I have some friends and my man-love who are trying to get in shape with me, but I thought it would be really fun to get support and GIVE support with everyone else who's working on it.

I invite everyone from the skinny folks trying to bulk up for their 300 Spartan team, to those of us who eat like Sailor Moon or Lina Inverse -- and need to stay looking just like them. ^_~

A few rules ~
- No Heckling! This means that we don't know anyone's situation. So no going to anyone's gallery and saying 'You don't need to lose any more weight!' or 'You need to lose more than THAT to look like Major Kusanagi!'
- Stay Healthy! I would like to discourage posting things like our weight in pounds or kilos, as I don't want us to become competitive. This isn't about starving ourselves or working out until we drop. Maybe we could keep our goals to reachable, healthy things, like 'I want to be comfortable showing my tummy by February' or even 'I want to run an 8 minute mile.'
- Feel free to complain. ^_^ While I don't think anyone should say "WAAAH I'M SO FAT," I think it should be free game to be like 'oh my god, i just made a Buster Sword out of mashed potatoes and ate it.' or 'I HATE RUNNING MY LEGS HURT' or 'i want pocky so badly i could scream*'
* - fun fact - pocky is actually not the worst diet-killer you can have!
- BE SUPPORTIVE! You all know what this means.

Reply here if you're interested, or PM me I suppose, if you would like to keep things private for any reason. We could do this here, on this thread, or we could make an LJ community, or whatever else you have in mind.

My AIM is zer0 one gunner, if anyone's thinking of reaching me there - I'm online right now. :D

love and peace!

I suppose I'll start by posting here, if anyone else would like to -

I'm 5'10", i'm not really concerned with weight loss, as much as I am toning up. I'd like to be comfortable showing my legs and backside in short skirts by February for my two cosplays - Revolutionary Girl Utena, and another one that's a surprise for a friend who can't know just yet. ^_^ I hope to lose a few inches, really, I don't care what my weight is if I like how I look. I don't plan to be stick-thin, I prefer Faye Valentines to Yukaris, if you know what I mean. ^_^ My plan, for the most part -

- Cut back HARD on sugar
- Increase fruit and veggie intake
- Increase protein intake from lean sources
- No full-fat dairy
- Run! Run run run. I'm working up to 30mins. of cardio, 5 days a week. I want to be able to get down to my high-school mile time of 9 minutes.

My biggest obstacle is STICKING TO IT! I have terrible willpower, so I'll need a forum full of friends to motivate me, and I promise I'll motivate you back! If this works out, I'd love us to have informal con meetups so we can show off the fruits of our labors!

Things that I fall victim to -
- WHITE CHEESES. Goat cheese, Brie, cream cheeses. mmm.
- Alcohol.
- Sitting on my butt looking at cosplay instead of going to the gym.
- My knees hurting. (I can work upper body when they are acting up!)
- Suuuuuugar.
- Milky coffees.

BACK, VILE SINS! :D

Good luck everyone!

This thread already has well over a hundred pages and deals with getting in shape, losing weight and general diet support.

Ah, thank you, I'll take a look.

I'm still, however, looking for cosplayers that are interesting in forming a current support group, for lack of a better phrase.

So as such, I would still like to encourage people who are actively trying to get in shape by a specific con, to reply.

Thank you again.

most cosplayers who are into the getting into shape, check the Losing Weight thread on a very regular schedule (hence it being over a hundred pages long). We don't really need a third thread about it (second thread being Chubby People Unite), when you can find everything there. If you are interested in specific cons, post in the specific con board. If you want to form a support group, try livejournal, greatestjournal or sparkpeople.com

I donno, I kind of feel like if the thread is unnecessary, it'll die a natural death :3

ANYway, here's my contribution to the thread :D Coz I like the newness and all.

My weaknesses:

*laziness
*lack of willpower
*"oh my god I hate running sooooo much"
*chocolate!! it's a serious addiction o.o
*ADD. Possibly the lamest excuse ever, but if I have nothing to do but run on a treadmill or ride an exercise bike, I will lose interest after about ten minutes.
*Physical comfort. If it's too hot/cold/windy/humid/etc., I will not exercise outside :3

What I Want To Achieve:

my middle school 8-minute mile!
lose the saddlebags and belly pooch :3
lose the terrible Fat Face in Photos Phenomenon XD
cut back on chocolate and eventually beat this stupid addiction ^_^

I came up with an ingenious idea, too!! I hooked up my ps2 to the TV in front of my exercise bike and treadmill, so I get to play video games while working out (kill two birds with one stone!) I also leave my Hellsing manga and DS down there, so I have ample distraction :D

So, yay! Go nerdy support group, go!

I dunno'. Some people may not want to make accounts for those just to talk about something that can pertain to THIS forum. Similar, but different subjects--We're trying to help one another, and I think it's a little rude to presume that we consider ourselves "chubby" because we want to lose weight. Just my $0.02

It's been said that losing weight for guys and losing weight for girls are two completely different things on emotional scales, however I'm here to offer a sort of male element to the mix.

I myself know that I have gained a few inches around the midsection--I blame this upon not getting enough exercise, and taking the Fast Food option on my Lunch Break.

My goals are:
-Trim down.
-Tone Up.

My biggest questions are:
Q) What exercises help us lose that belly fat best?
Q) What's an easy diet to help one break the stranglehold of junkfood?

I actually like this idea! It's not about losing weight as much as its about getting in shape, which is a nice change because i'm a noodle person (in other words, really, really thin), and I need to get some muscle!

So! Pretty much I need to work out and overload on protien, rather than get stuck in front of the computer for hours on end XD I already eat alot, but probably not the right things, so I need to work on that too!

Hey there everyone, Thought I'd drop by and offer any help I can give. I used to be a rather heavy and pudgy young lad, but it led to me developing a health condition that got me thinking in the right perspective so over the years I have gone from being an overweight nerdy kid to a big muscley guy. I know a lot about losing weight, as I had to lose a lot of body fat myself. And I know a lot about gaining muscle for those of you wanting to bulk. I used to be 250 lbs with a body fat percentage of about 20. Now I weigh 220lbs with a body fat percentage of around 5%. Not bragging or anything, just letting you guys know that I used to be heavy so I know how it is.

The biggest problem for most people is actually getting up and working out. For most people its the hardest part, when it really shouldnt be. I used to always tell myself. But If you look at it this way, it can help motivate you more. An hour a day. 1 hour. Sacrifice one hour a day, and for that sacrifice you will feel better for the rest of the day. 1 hour at the gym, or on the treadmill at home. 1 hour isnt that much time to feel good, and good about yourself, for the rest of the day. You just gotta get up and do it, we all know its hard, but it pays off.

Also, anyone trying to diet and lose weight (or bulking) should invest into getting Fish Oil capsules. Taking those with every meal is very good. Its one of the thing every person about fitness and nutrition should tell you. Fish Oil capsules do wonders.

I will check around this thread often so if anyone has any questions or wants any kind of help or advice, please dont be afraid to ask,

Andrea

Yeah, I'm all in favor of a general "getting in shape" thread, because I'm also on the too-thin side and thus don't feel remotely welcome in the "losing weight" type threads. I mean, my great accomplishment in the last few years was randomly discovering that in the couple of years that I'd been steadily employed again, and doing heavy lifting at work and stuff... despite the fact that my pants still fit just fine, I'd gone from 84 pounds to 94 pounds. :D Mostly muscle, I'm guessing, since I was literally moving a TON of stuff on some days.

I've since moved on to a department with the same company that is less physically intensive than the hardware/furniture departments, though, and I know I've lost some of that muscle. I don't have a scale, so I don't weigh myself - and I'm pretty happy with my body now for the first time since I was in 4th grade and first got sick. (I still have stomach problems which prevent me from eating much, but I'm better at managing them, so I can at least maintain weight.) It's really just the fact that these days, I don't grin evilly at my bulging shoulder muscles when I happen to glance at them in the mirror while I'm wearing a tank top and brushing my teeth. ;)

I loved those shoulder muscles. They made me look a lot more masculine, and since I mostly crossplay, that's a good thing. Another of my favorite character types is the "short little girl who kicks a whole lot of butt", and that too looks better when you have some muscles to show off. And well, my legs have always been skinny, but this last summer I bought a bike... but now it's starting to snow and I can't ride it the two miles to work and back anymore. Need to find other ways to bulk up the legs, particularly the calves.

So I bought some hand weights to work on the shoulders... possibly should invest in some ankle weights for the calves, and I've been thinking about making a habit of walking around the local reservoir (about a mile all the way around) a couple times a week... but darnit, it IS getting cold out in Michigan. :P The girlfriend recently bought a little pedal machine - it's like a stationary bike without a seat, you just set the pedals up wherever you're going to sit - and I've been thinking that might be a good idea too...

I'm gonna give some helpful (in my opinion) advise.

The Fruits and veggies thing.

Eat much more Veggies than fruits. Fruits have complex sugars and carbs, so eating them is ok, but in small amounts. I'd suggest eating fruits up until like 2 or 3 pm.

Also.

DRINK WATER!!!!
I don't care if it's flavoured, or plain. Just. Not. Carbonated.

BUBBLES ARE YOUR ENEMY!!
As are sugars.

Hey -

I've actually heard tell from a lot of people that fish oil is really good for you, but I've never exactly heard why...something to do with Omega-3's I guess, but do you know anything specific about them?

Yeah, I fully support the musculature! I've always been really inspired by this picture -
http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2005/specials/oscars05/bestworstdress/hswank.jpg
Which was Hilary Swank after she did Million Dollar Baby, and was amazingly gorgeously buff. (and knew it! haha, hence why she wore that dress.)

There are a great many doughy, pale cosplayers with not a lot of definition, I certainly wouldn't mind if I didn't lose a pound, if I could replace it all with lean, sexy muscle!

I second bunnymachine's inquiry about the Fish Oil, as well.

I'm really happy that there are skinny people interested in bulking up here, as well. I know I didn't feel very welcome in the 'chubby people' or 'losing weight' threads, as that isn't really my concern. Health is my biggest concern!

(well. Health, and looking good in vinyl minishorts. :D)

Woo!!!

Just got back from a 40 minute workout, and took mister Whiney_Farmboy with me (who did not whine, not even once. so that's a misnomer. ^_^)

Here's our plan -
- Jogged around the neighborhood once, the long way, to end up at the gym
- 20 minutes of cardio (He splits his up into 10 and 10, as it's what the 300 Guys did a lot of)
- Experimented (I'm still experimenting with lifting weights) with the leg press, some lat pull-downs, triceps curls, and a fleeting, painful tryst with the bench press. Maaaybe that one will have to wait. I can do some more 'arm circles with heavy soup cans,' those still make my arms sore. ^_^
- Jogged back home.

And today, except for two pieces of white bread as the bookends to my otherwise Very Healthy Turkey Sammich, i've been good! Lots of veggies and fruit. (More veggies, though! Thanks StrawberryShuichi!)

I feel great! Not even tuckered out, I feel energized, and ready to go to have a whole weekend of working out - LARPing in the woods with some friends! I'll be back Monday, and I hope to see what you guys have been up to!

and remember --
You don't HAVE to say no to the Thanksgiving leftovers, so long as you're moving your body and eating sensibly. My goal this year is to freeze some and make them LAAST so i can have good home cooking on call for like, a month! Mmmmmm.

Ok im joining in with this here thread.
My main problem is that im slightly dependent on caffeine therefore need around 6-7 coffees per day which im trying to cut out since, not only am i rarely sleeping, its also not too good for the weight loss.
Im not overweight or anything but im also not super skinny/fit and, since im planning Misa Amane for Amecon, im hoping to be able to feel comfortbale with the miniskirts >.>

So yeah, my plan is
~ Kick the coffee habit and take water instead
~ go from 50 situps a day to 100
~ Walk the 6 floors of stairs rather than take the lift
~ Snack on fruit/ryvita crackers rather than crisps XD

Kyaaa, this seems like a good idea. :3 The Losing Weight and Cosplay thread has gotten really cluttered as of late (not to say that this one won't become as such, it's just gotten to a very annoying point in the former).

So, I'll start off mine.

I'm 5'2" and a good 30 kg overweight (as far as I'm concerned, anyway). I do have some muscle, resulting in my looking ten kg lighter (and winning every time I do a Guess Your Weight game X3).

I've been gaining a bit of fat-weight ever since I started my job, as I eat inappropriate foods and come home and sit on my arse and do nothing. This has resulted in ten pounds of weight gain, which is a place I do NOT want to be.

So, my goals are to lose weight and build muscle at the same time. I have a plan figured out already, I just need to get the willpower to do it.

My plan:
-Take prepared food to work, rather than eating chips and candy and other junk
-Condition 3 times a day (2 on workdays)
--Pushups, crunches, leg lifts, squats, etc.
-Stepmania once a day (since my DDR is broken)
-Reduced after-supper snackage

My downfalls
-Cookies
-Emotional eating (waaah) (this is why I'm paying attention to cutting down on eating rather than changing my diet right now - I figure that if I can lose inches first, I'll feel better about myself and I'll be able to avoid sugary stuff)
-General laziness
-Obsessing over the scale (so I'm going to be measuring my key areas, rather than weighing myself)

bunnymachine

-Obsessing over the scale (so I'm going to be measuring my key areas, rather than weighing myself)

YES! I do that too. But I have to remember that since I'm mostly flab at the moment, I will probably NOT lose weight when I become more muscular. Plus, I hate scales XD I never used to care what I weighed, then I lived with two extremely weight-conscious girls during college, and now I have to get on the scale every morning XD

BUT, anyway, I agree with you that measuring in inches is better than waiting for pounds to melt off :3

BUT, anyway, I agree with you that measuring in inches is better than waiting for pounds to melt off :3

I have to agree with this as well, though, admittedly it's hard to not be disappointed when you don't lose weight. For me at least. I like the idea of this thread!

My Plan:
- Use our walking machine while watching my anime, or movies.
- Do ab crunches with some of the times I'm sitting around bored.
- Try and eat healthier, though I can't really think of many vegetables I like. So that makes it harder.
- Drink less soda (Which I normally only drink because of ease to get, I think this will be the most easy by far)
- Bake a bit less. Yep, if you bake some dessert, you have to have some. It's just the rule :p

My weaknesses:
- FAST FOOD. Yeah, it's just so easy to drive up the road for lunch rather than get up early to pack a lunch.
- Little to no planning ahead. I just generally hope I can motivate myself day to day.
- Strong Dislike for the taste of healthy food. :bigcry:

Anyhow, hopefully if i can get over those, and hit my goals, I'll be able to tone up and lose that darn belly fat. :p

Wish me luck. hehe.

I'm 5'2" and while I could stand to lose a few pounds, I'm happy with my weight.

My goal, however, is to tone up just about everything; I went from working out with the college football team (the only girl! ) and actually being able to beat some of them in the exercises that the football coach set us, to a 3rd shift desk job which means my exercise routine has gone out the window.

My plan:
*Start doing some crunches and push-ups during downtimes at work. Not the safest to leave the building, so walking around the parking lot is right out, but that leads to point 2.
*Go for a run once a week, more will be schedule-dependent. I have two-month-old running shoes, fit by a professional, that were worn in the store, and then tossed in the closet at home.
*Eat a real breakfast every. single. day. Even if I'm running late, toast is quick and easy to make.
*make one other meal, either dinner or lunch.

My weaknesses:
*soda. I have to drink it to wake up/stay focused. I'm not giving that up!
*candy/sugar
*going out to eat. It is so much easier.
*boxed meals. Microwave 'em...then ingest most of the salt needed for the day. >.<
*laziness. (But I'm gone 60-100+ hours each week. I'm allowed a bit, no?)

Maybe I can get my BF to go walking with me!

Maybe I can get my BF to go walking with me!

Actually, trying to get someone to do some of the exercises with you (such as running/walking) could be a big motivation. I think that I may try to con some friends into jogging with me if I can. :p

It really is. I had a great exercise routine when I was living in Richmond during college, coz my two weight-obsessed roommates were constantly working out, so I had a fairly tight routine.

...Then I moved back up to Fairfax, and had no more routine, and gained like 15 pounds  So now I must be my own motivator ^_^

Good luck with your exercising!

Also, for those of you guys wanting to lose water weight first...Eat little to no salt. Sodium traps water in the body, and you'd be surprised how much of that is that chubbiliness that we're all complaining about.

I cut off salt (more like having a weee bitty bit of it), ketchup (LOTS of sodium), basically any other condiments. To get my craving for sodium, I'd eat fresh tomatos (no salt, with maybe a LITTLE bit of Fat-free/Sodium-free ranch), or things with garlic...Zuccini(fried with no oils or butter [Sodium Free PAM is your ruler]) with mashed garlic onto it actually very tasty!

One thing to remember about dieting.

If you absolutely cannot live without something (coffee, chocolate ect.) DO NOT FORBID YOURSELF FROM HAVING IT. A little is not going to hurt you.

Rice, while it makes the Japanese way skinneh, clogs up the system, making if hard to digest and make you...well...constipated. Having a bit of sushi is good, but eating a whole huge bowl of rice is going to do absolutely nothing.

If you do wish to weigh yourself, weigh yourself at the same time of the day. I'd do it twice a day, one in the morning when you wake up, and one before doing to bed. Just as your height changes throughout the day, so does your weight.

Fried foods are ok, so long as fried with no oil or butter. Vegetable oil is best if you must have oil, and only a little bit of it.

and once again

WATER WATER WATER WATER.

I'd suggest drinking atleast 4 bottles a day (more if you can)
Water is what you're made of, it will flush out your system.

Also, grated apples. They have acids in them that will clear your system out. THEY HAVE TO BE GRATED.

I'm gonna be posting up little dit-bits as I remember them ^^;

ooh ooh i must join in!! this is exactly what i need! support and ACCOUNTABILTY!! ive tried to tone up over and over and over and i always fail because i forget to work out or i forget to not eat a bag of chips etc...

so im 5'1" -there in lies the problem- if i could just grow like 4 inches and stretch out all the fat i would be perfectly proportioned! any way i hear that at 5 foot you should be a hundred pounds, then 5 pounds adds on for every inch above 5 foot. in that case im only 11-12 pounds overweight. but its not the weight im looking to lose (seeing as i dont even own a scale) but the pooches and the jiggles and the hangin overs. and also the ROUND FACE. i look really heavy in my pics but im really not!

plans::
-no more snacking. unless its between lunch and dinner and HEALTHY!!
-no more cokes. none. zero. H2O ONLY!!
-eat smaller portions. they say the size of your plam is the appropriate size.
-even more fruits and veggies than i already eat
-run around block at least 3 times a week
-4 weeknights is the pilates video/random crunches, leg lifts, etc.

weaknesses::
-mountain dew. *addicted*
-chips. i seriously eat them with EVERY meal! gah must stop...
-lazyness. seriously i just dont have any umph.
-i hate no detest no abhor no loathe any kind of physical labor. running is just evil, and i hate the burn oh how i hate it.

things to continue::
-i usually eat an apple a day or every other day. helps make me not hungary and keeps me healthy.
-i work at subway and since im short, the counter is too tall so with every customer i go up and down on my tiptoes giving my calves a wonderful workout all day long.
-also at work i have a free super healthy meal every day! i just have to stop eating cookies...and watch the very high sodium intake.

so all in all i want to be healthy and look better!!

Yup, you can get all nitty-gritty about exercise routines and diet, but a lot of fitness just boils down to momentum and consistency.

Eating right can be a huge problem when you're single - most foods aren't packaged for single servings. So, a good idea is to split apart purchases into single servings the moment you get home from grocery shopping. Also, don't be afraid to immediately freeze half or more of whatever you cook for dinner.

Me, though... I'm blessed/cursed by genetics. My metabolism is still that of a teenager; add a natural distaste for sweets and you have a skinny person. I'm mainly working on trying to fit in more running/outdoors stuff in my life without using my weird work schedule as a cop-out.

I'm 5'11" and 125 lbs right now and would love to put on an extra 10+ of muscle. I'd like to at least graduate from "skinny" to "wiry" :toothy:

I am joining too! :) I am 5'3 ((according to the doctor)) and I'm not technically /skinny/ nor /chubby/ or /fat/. But I do really want to flatten a bit for the Death Note photoshoot in February.

My Problems:

~SODA
~Staying up very late ((like 4+ in the morning ><)) on non school nights.
~Sel concious
~Little sleep
~No one to motivate me ((which I think this thread will help :D))
~Sugar
~Pasta
~Salt ><

What I'm trying to do:

~Make myself go to bed earlier.
~Cut down a lot on sodas ((like 1 or half a can a day ><))
~Drink more water
~Find someone to jog with me in the morning @.@
~Do my age x 3 + 7 crunches a day ((my gym teacher says it helps))
~Not be on the computer almost every breathing second.
~take a break from Ragnarok Online
~Cut down on salts and pasta

Hopefully I'll be able to obtain my goal! I will keep coming back to this thread because I like motivation threads :)

Quick tip: Crunches are basically half sit-ups with your hands behind your hand. It flattens and tones your stomach as well as add muscle.

I will try to add quick tips at the end of my posts on here :) Hopefully they'll help.

Edit: Oh yeah, I'm going to try to stop eating a Honey-senpai and L diet xD *getting into character can get to you*

I'd also like to join in~! I'm one of those people who was told I "didn't need to lose weight" in the Losing Weight thread when all I wanted was to get some info on toning up. I also think I look thinner in my photos because I've gotten used to taking them at angles that make me look slimmer (myspace angle anyone?) XD But that doesn't go for photos other people take!

Anyway, I'm 5'4 so I also suffer from the "being short" syndrome, like iluvmycat9 said: if only I could stretch out some! I'm not interested in "losing weight" just losing inches. Since last year I've lost 10lbs and have toned up my arms by lifting weights. Weight lifting is the only thing I keep up with. I used to do it every other day, but I've been slacking a bit. ._.

My issues:

♣ I have an hour glass figure--so I have big hips--and I prefer small hips. I'm chunky around my hips/stomach/thighs/butt and I have no idea how to tone that area up because I know "spot reducing" doesn't work. I'm fine with how my upper body looks, just not the lower half.

♣ I have asthma and some undiagnosed!heartpalpatations thing. In other words, because I have asthma, I always used it as an excuse to not be able to run. I enjoy running, but can't do it very long. And more recently (as in this summer) I've been having chest pains after doing too much kardio and sometimes even after doing a fast movement. Too much = 2 mins. Seriously. (I've had an EKG but haven't heard back on it yet. It may just be anxiety-related since I do have anxiety disorders). So I need to figure out what I can do to increase my endurance for exercise. I do jumping jacks/dancing/hyperactivity things (I'm ADHD xD), and I run with my dog when I take him out, but again, I can't do it for more than 2 mins at a time.

♣ I don't eat a lot and I think that's affected my metabolism. (If I wasn't always conscious of my weight I'd be overweight.) I think it has to do with my ADHD (I get multi-tasking and just forget to eat) and that nowadays everything is advertised as bad for you, so I'm to the point where I'm paranoid to eat anything. My daily food intake used to consist of cereal for breakfast, chocolate/sugar throughout the day, and something not-that-good for supper. But as of late I've been doing better on the eating thing. I recently got a full time job so I'm always out of the house, not snacking on sugar all day, eating lunch, and drinking a lot more. So before if I ate like a normal person it would equal me gaining weight, now that I'm eating more normal and NOT eating the junk, it should equal out and = healthier me! I also eat a banana almost every day which are very good for you! n_n

My Goals

♣ Lose 10 more pounds or the visual-equivalent in lost fat/gained muscle. And keep it off!

♣ To learn how to cook! Because I can't, it results in me eating a lot of junk like take-out or frozen crap. But it's hard because I hate spending too long on cooking. I don't have the patience for it. D:

♣ Get at least 30mins exercise a day. My new job = walks at lunch. And they also have a gym available for use. So I need to get up earlier so I can get to work earlier and get some exercise in before work!

♣ Eat more vegetables and less sugar~! I have an iced cappuccino (so addicted x_x) everyday and my snacks = chocolate chips. My chocolate intake has actually decreased quite a bit. I used to eat a whole Dairy Milk (those things are big) almost every day. Now I limit myself to dark chocolate only. I've given up soda (I used to drink a lo~t of pepsi, so it can be done!!) and only drink water, apple juice, and 1% milk (on cereal). And lately I've been trying to drink a lot more water. I need to keep it up! /o/

Phew, that was a whole lot of tl;dr~! I hope this works. I'll be able to report in on this thread on my good and bad days for support, so let's kick each others' butts into gear! :D

In other words, because I have asthma, I always used it as an excuse to not be able to run. I enjoy running, but can't do it very long. And more recently (as in this summer) I've been having chest pains after doing too much kardio and sometimes even after doing a fast movement. Too much = 2 mins.

Walking can be just as beneficial as running! You might not "feel the burn" (which, in my opinion, is a GOOD thing :toothy: ), but it'll firm up your legs and help you lose tummy fat! Also, walking backwards is good for your butt and hamstrings and calves :3

Good luck with everything!

Oh, I never even thought of walking backwards before, thanks for the tip! My butt suffers from sitting in a chair all day long. xD But my main problem with walking is I have no where to walk to and I don't like walking alone. I need to pester my husband to come out with me, but he's an obsessive WoW player, which is never a good thing, haha.

edit: Oh, and about this:

But I have to remember that since I'm mostly flab at the moment, I will probably NOT lose weight when I become more muscular.

I don't think you have to worry about that because when you gain muscle, you lose fat too. Sustaining muscle requires a lot of calories so to maintain and build muscle, your body will burn fat. Mind you, there's the whole "having muscle under fat" thing that'll probably make you look bigger at first/if you do too much muscle building, but it will eventually even out. I'm no pro at this stuff, though, but I think that's how it works~! x3

I don't know about the prices in your areas, but I know the grocery store I work at has frozen vegetables and steam-in-the-bag veggies for a dollar. Decent amounts, too. Plus, you can get a small thing of meat for less than 5 dollars (had someone come through who only spent a 1.35 on a small, but decently sized package of beef). Get a little olive oil (it's good for the heart!) and you can make some stir-fry.

Also, don't forget people, if you're working out, do NOT neglect eating. If you're hungry, EAT. It's a common mistake thinking that you have to eat less. You just have to eat more often, but smaller portions. Complex carbs for energy, protein for muscle growth and repair. Lean protein like chicken or turkey.

Plus, try replacing regular pasta with whole-grain pasta. It tastes exactly the same, but it's much better for you. And if you're anything like me, you can't give up pasta all together. Just remember, eat less 'fake' foods and find alternatives to snacks (clementine oranges, carrots, etc. are GREAT for this). Get organic peanut butter and it'll be much better for you.

Also, find something that gets you moving. Even if it's just a movie or live concert, jog in place while you dance or sing. Hell, dancing is GREAT for the body. Look up parkour and free-running on youtube and see if that doesn't getcha amped. Works for me!

I'm in the 5'0" club and somewhere around 109 lbs. I look pretty all right in photos, but there's no particular tone to my arms and I wish to change that. Also, my waist could be a little more defined.

My plan

-Continue making my own lunch for school.
-Continue practicing the FFVIII waltz every day.
-Continue walking for half an hour a day.
-Start lifting some weights to get my arms toned.

My downfalls

-Laziness. I'm not as bad as some people I know, as I used to take ballet for about two years, but I do have some days where I just cannot get out of bed, let alone exercise. Also, I just got back into playing FFIV, which is hard if you haven't played for a year and don't remember the way out of certain dungeons :D.
-A superfast metabolism. Having one means I cannot gain weight easily at all, and therefore I cannot gain any muscle easily. I'm trying to eat more and healthier so I can at least keep my weight from dropping any lower, but that's very hard.
-Somewhat low self esteem. I am a stick, which means I have a small waist but also I have small hips. My chest doesn't particularly bother me as the characters I cosplay also tend to be on the small side, but my hips do. I want some curves! Also I want to grow a few inches. Just three and a half! Just in my legs and arms! Please, Master Creator, please?

I don't think you have to worry about that because when you gain muscle, you lose fat too.

Oh, I mostly meant that as I (hopefully :3) transform my fat INTO muscle, I probably won't LOSE weight since muscle is heavier than fat. And that's fine with me, as long as I look less doughy XD

I have really really short/chubby legs. I HATE THAT.
The rest of my body is completely fine,

I was just wondering, but does roller blading help make your legs skinnier?
O_o;; I've been roller blading for 1 hour everyday for the last month, and I only gained muscles. >__<; now it looks really bulky and stuff-
@_@; my parents keep telling me that I'll eventually grow taller and my legs won't be a problem. This has been bugging me for a while now~

btw, I'm only 5'0"

I was just wondering, but does roller blading help make your legs skinnier?

Xuki-kun: Well, rollerblading will firm up and increase the muscles in your legs, and if you feel like you already have a lot of leg muscle, rollerblading will probably only make your legs bigger. I do know that swimming is a good way to streamline your body and it will help tone up your legs without adding bulk :)

Hope that helps!

Well, I did alright yesterday - twelve minutes of Stepmania before my calves needed a break, and then I attained something I've never had to do before - cry out slightly as I expended LOTS of effort to finish crunches. I've never been in that position before.

I LIKE IT. X3 Hee Hee.

I didn't pack my own food for lunch at work, because I was working on Allen's coat buttons and I was exhausted by the time I decided to quit, and I had to wake up at six in the morning DX.

Tomorrow! I will remember. I hope.

I told myself that after Thankgiving, I was going to get myself to get in shape before January. Then after January, I was going to lose weight and tone up for May. While I'm not terribly over weight, I do have extra pudge around my stomach that I do not like.

My Goal:
+ Lose that pudge.

My Plan:
+ 100 sit ups a day
+ Doing a 30 minute walk everyday (if work doesn't call for too much)
+ Eating better. NO MORE FAST FOOD.

My Problems:
+ Stay up late. Right now it's almost 5 AM, and I'm not tired at all.
+ Too much sleep. I stay up late, but once I go to sleep, I sleep up to 12 hours if I don't have work til lat.
+ Soda. I love soda. I've been drinking diet soda lately, but sometimes I'll sneak in a cream soda or a coke.
+ Eating late. I get hungry around 3 AM sometimes, so I'll go into the kitchen and grab some leftovers
+ No activity. I rarely go out unless I need to, and even then I stay in my car.

It's all pretty simple stuff, but this is just my start. Once ALA is over, I'm going more extreme.

To answer the questions about Fish Oil. Here is a quote from an article from one of my favorite websits on Fish Oil.

"Humans originally consumed a natural diet of 1 to 1 or 1 to 2 ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids. (Just to refresh your memory, omega-6s are those fatty acids found in just about every packaged food you can find, in addition to those cooking oils that permeate your cupboard, while omega-3s are those that we typically associate with salmon and other cold water fish.)

Unfortunately, because of extreme food processing, raising cattle on corn instead of grass, avoidance of fish in the diet, and plain ol' greed and ignorance, the modern ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is more like 20 or 30 to 1.

At its most basic level, the problem lies with these primitive, rudimentary hormones called eicosanoids. These hormones are involved in pretty much everything our body does and if we ingest a lot of omega-6 fatty acids, we get eicosanoids made from omega-6s.

Trouble is, omega-6 eicosanoids are really pro-inflammatory. The body makes eicosanoids from omega-3 fatty acids, too, but these eicosanoids are very weakly inflammatory, if at all. As such, simply shifting the diet towards omega-3's can do remarkable things for your health and performance."

That pretty much sums it up without getting too technical on science terms. Basically, the hormones created from omega-3 fatty acids are very good for our body, but in our present time the food we eat has primarily omega-6 fatty acids. Which are not so good for the body, but are required. This is all under the proof that the body doesnt need just protein to be healthy, but fatty acids as well.

Since pretty much all of you here are women, you can do with buying standard fish oil capsules at a nutrition store or so. Take about 2 capsules per meal and you should be good. Keep them refirdgerated as they help reduce the fishy burps xP

*Edit* Also for the girls who want to bulk some. You will need to eat protein! This best comes in white meat such as chicken, turkey, and especially fish. Avoid eating white meat that is fried. Start ordering it grilled. Do not eat fried food XD

Yay, what a great thread! I've never really dieted or worked out regularly in my life, so I'm nt sure exactly what to do. I don't feel I am overweight, I'm actually average weight for a girl my size and age (5'5 1/2", 17 years old), but I seriously lack any kind of toning or definition. This hasn't really bothered me too much before now, but I'm going to be Sai from Naruto for Fanime 2008, and I'd like to work on making my tummy look....well, presentable, haha.

I was thinking I should do sit-ups because they work your stomach muscles, right? But other than that, I'm not sure what to do.

My eating habits aren't too bad. I don't think I need to change what I eat, just maybe change how much I eat. You know, more of the healthy, less of the bad stuff.

I was also wondering if--and I don't know if this is a weird question---as I work out and stuff, even though I'm focusing on my stomach, is there a chance I'll lost anything around the face? Okay, that sounded better in my head. Basically, I've noticed in a lot of pictures of me that my jawline tends to not stand out as much as I'd like, blending a little with my neck. Can I change that, or is that like a genetic thing?

Kuro Yue
11-25-2007, 06:22 PM
It might be a genetic thing, but fat/water does build up around the cheeks as well as the rest of the body. How much water do you drink during the day? Usually drinking lots of water helps to flush out the pudginess from around the face.

And as you burn calories, and build muscle, you will be losing fat from everywhere.

Hey! Glad to see everyone got into this thread while i was away!

So OH MAN i went LARPing this weekend with friends? Boy howdy i'm feeling the burn from sprinting through the woods. But I feel great and can't wait to go running tomorrow!

Lawliet - GIRRRL I am so with you on the chunky hips thing. I've got a ghetto-booty! ItB's just gotta be a FIRM ghetto booty. Then it can stay. You can be my butt-buddy. Yeah. That sounds completely innocent. :D

i also learned something awesome! When you get a craving for cheese, The Laughing Cow makes these wedges of soft swiss? And each one is only about 50 calories and 3 grams of fat. And they are really really good, and they rule. :D Don't know if I should be encouraging cheese, buuuut. Is not bad! Ja?

I mentioned this at the top of the thread, but again, my AIM is zer0 one gunner, so if anyone wants to add someone to their buddy list if they need support in an instant - feel free to add me!

Do any of you have a goal costume, by the way? Something you'd wear if you were in your ideal shape?

I'd love to be Naga from Slayers at some point. Silly, I know, but i love that girl. :D

Hooray for this thread! It never hurts to have support buddies when working out, in fact, it's my only saving grace! XD

I'm 5'4''...I can't reach the top cabinet shelf in my kitchen without climbing. X_x;
I have to agree with everyone else in wishing I were taller!

In the past few months I've lost 20+ lbs and I'm trying to get more toned.

The Good:
-I speed walk every day for 30 minutes in the morning while listening to music
-I run each night for 6 minutes/ walk for 20 with my boyfriend. (yeah...I'm a bad runner! lol)
-I have a chart which I have decorated with my current target cosplay, which marks out how much water I drink, and how much exercise I get.
-I make 1 cup of Green Tea each day

The Bad:
-I am a popcorn junkie. I don't mean light popcorn without salt or butter, I mean hardcore movie theater POP-friggin-CORN!! XD ...which I eat without remorse. (fortunately I don't go to the movies too often. )
- I tend to get nasty cravings, which worsen when I avoid eating that specific item.
-I can't do anything without music, or my ADD kicks in and I space out and give up.

The Ugly:
-I play WoW.
-I spend too much time drooling over cosplay photos when I should be working out. :P

My friend is working with a personal trainer, so I'm always bugging her for information that she's getting. Apparently she said that if you have trouble spots with muscle mass being too large, that you should spend one night of working out on that one group until you just can't do anymore, then just rest the muscles for a week. She told me that it breaks down the muscle, and when it heals, it'll be leaner. I have yet to try it, as I've been sick the past week and a half since then...once I get better, I'm so going to the gym! ^^

If anyone needs a "workout-buddy" to keep track and share their daily achievements, I'd be more than happy to help. My motivation lately has been a bit slack, anyway! >w<

Hokay! I'm feeling 'stremely accomplished this weekend :toothy: On both Saturday and Sunday, I biked for 30 minutes (stationary bike, mind you, so I got to play some Odin Sphere and KH2 and watch some Eva *nerd* The LCD told me that I biked 8 miles, but I donno how accurate that is :3) and walked one mile on the treadmill (to cool down). On Saturday I did some weights too, but alas, today I was too sore XD

Yay! Plus, this is an improvement from last weekend when the bike LCD told me I only biked 6.2 miles in 30 minutes!

Is it lame that this thread is actually one of my big motivators XD?

I really like the idea of this thread. I do feel like it's goals are more like mine than the other two threads are. I'm not really concerned about loosing weight as I am inches and gaining toning and stuff. So this is a good thread for mich! ^^ I hope it does survive!

So, I guess my goal is to be comfortable in a VERY short skirt by either may or august (depending on which convention that I'll be attending...). I plan on cosplaying KOS-MOS V.4. Oh. Dear. God. Like a lot of people have said before, I'm not really concerined about the numbers when it comes to loosing weight. Just the inches and toning. Because everyone loves a six pack. I wouldn't mind making my arms look better, too. (Though, I have no idea how to do that one...)

My weaknesses are:

-Sugar
-Greasy Foods (Pizza is my favorite food. In the world.)
-Bad Will Power
-I'm WAY too hard on myself

Over all, though, cosplay aside, I think the most important thing for me is to be healthy. I don't want to have a heart attack or have horrible diabetis (sp) when I'm older, because I ate too many pizzas and nachos, and didn't get my lazy butt up and excersize.

Oh. Almost forgot. I'm 5'7 and very curvy. :3

Good luck, guys! : D

Great thread idea  Everyone is in need of support! <3
Since Last April I have lost about 30 lbs; however I am so not toned o.0 Which is what I really care about *have always said I dont care how much I weigh as long as I am healthy, toned and feel good about myself*
I was in competitive swimming and soccer for 10 years when I was younger so I have muscular calves and big thighs T_T and my mid section is in need of a serious tone-up.

I was super hardcore at the beginning of this year *became mildy comfortable where I was .... *BAD IDEA* T_T slacked off and am back into a bad routine.

Good (when I actually do it) *sweatdrop*::

-15 - 20 min of stretching/mini workout every morning/night as soon as I wake up or just before I go to bed
-hour walk in the morning
-45 min stationary bike at night
-small portions throughout the day
-lots of green tea

Bad::

-Lazyness!!! :chatah: <- EVIL
-work (I work way too much, so the last thing I want to do when I get off or just before I leave is to workout :bigcry: )
-lack of sleep (I go to bed every day at 3-4am and wake up at 9am to go to work)
-not a lot of fruit/veg in my diet >.<

I gave myself a motivation cosplay so that I have a deadline. My friend made the outfit for me already, so I will feel super bad if I dont wear it :skidude2: <- my stratedgy at making myself work harder
Its Grimmjow from Bleach XD

What I feel I need in order to push myself is a weekly chart/picture, showing my progress. And someone I would have to show every week so that I feel obligated to stick to it. Is anyone interested in doing that? *if I did it by myself I know I would totally cheat* :angel2:

as you can see, the 5 lbs of fat is much bulkier than the 5 lbs of muscle, but five pounds is still five pounds. muscle does not weigh more than fat, it is more dense than fat. so youre right, if you gain 5 lbs of muscle and burn off the fat, you wont tell a difference on a scale, but you sure as heck will in the mirror!! (which is way better to me, i want physical evidence for everyone to see, not just me in the bathroom going yay i lost 1.3 lbs!!)

again im so sorry, but i just had to explain...but now on to my OWN short comings!!

i havent eaten right *shame* or worked out **double shame** but i have a reasonable excuse!! ive been sick -poor me- but im getting better so i will soon be able to to start on my journey to healthyness!

and i LOVE the idea of deciding on a costume to work towards looking good in. not only does the costume itself take time/energy/money but our bodies should as well! i mean, we are as much a part of the costume as a shirt, scarf, wig, sword, boots, etc...so i have decided my costume will be misa amane from deathnote! i have already been planning on that one but i want to be able to wear a short skirt and thigh highs with out my thighs being jiggly or my little gut getting in the way...

so look out misa, here i come!!

*edit* oh i almost forgot faye valentine! i want to cosplay as her sooo bad but there is NO WAY i have the body for that...not yet anyways!!

so misa amane and faye valentine here i come!!

My .02 I find it helpful to "get ready" for something. In my case its races. Running works almost every muscle in your body. Look for a local race (10k 5k 1mile) whatever you are comfortable with and prepare for it. After that prepare for another and shoot for a faster time. www.runnersworld.com has a lot of them if you look up your area. You don't have to be the top finisher, it feels great to improve and have hard evidence that you did :) Also I guarantee that you beat somebody! Even if it was the lazy dude who couldn't get off the couch.

Ok, so I haven't been doing very well since my last message. ._. I did absolutely NOTHING this weekend, just sat on my ass all day playing video games. DX I always feel so motivated PLANNING on doing things, I just never seem to get to them.

I did, however, actually get my butt out to go for a walk, but it ended up being so cold out that we just couldn't do it and quickly made our way back inside after only 8 mins-ish. SO COLD. So I think nature is against my wanting to get in shape. :C But on my way back, the wind was blowing in my face so I tried out the "walking backwards" that bunnymachine suggested and I felt the burn instantly! :D My only concern is tripping and knocking myself out. xD

Hee, it's all good ^_^ That's essentially what I meant; even if I see a difference in the mirror, there won't necessarily be one in the numbers on the scale. And yes, I agree! How I look > how much I weigh ^__^

And I second (third?) the get-in-shape-for-cosplay motion! My aim is to look good enough to show some leg as Sailor Venus and to not jiggle my way through the hallways wearing Julia's catsuit from Cowboy Bebop :3

Do you have any indoor exercise equipment? If you do, hook your videogames up in front of it and multitask!! The *only* reason why I've been good about exercising every day is coz my PS2 is in front of my treadmill, so I *have* to workout if I want to play ^___^

Good luck with everything!!

I've put on a few pounds recently after losing about 20, a big step for me, and I'm really discouraged. Right now I'm not quite a land whale, more a land manatee: flabby, awkward, and white. I don't want to continue in my current state of aquatic mammal-ness, so I need some support to go out and walk in the woods, or dance, or get on the treadmill, or lift some weights, just a couple of times a week for now. The problem is that it's SO hard for me to do anything physical, so my goal right now is just to get motivated enough to exercise a little every now and then.

Has anyone else struggled with that? How have the exercise-averse among you managed to sneak in some extra fitness time? Seriously, at this point I may need to be dragged kicking and screaming towards a stationary bike before I'll get off my butt. HALP.

PENNY! For you, dear, I shall reply again. ^_^

The biggest way I got myself to enjoy running was okay. This is totally lame. But I watched that show 'Made' on MTV? And it's totally dumb, but some of those kids were totally physically inept, and even they could swing an 11 minute mile. So i told myself my goal was to get down to my 9 minute mile from high school. It's a goal that's more fun to work towards than 'losing weight' or something. Other goals to look forward to are like -
- Standing on tiptoes for ten minutes
- Walk for an hour without stopping
- Run to (enter landmark here) and back without stopping
- Perform X dance without stopping
- Do Paranoia on Heavy mode
- etc. etc etc.

The other motivation I found is this - the nutritionist at my work said if you're trying to lose weight, you really need to be doing 30 minutes of cardio (ANYTHING that gets your heart rate up and sustains it) for 5 days a week. I find exercising EVERY day is way easier than doing it a few times a week. It lets me make up less excuses. And BOY does it burn off stress. I had a TERRIBLE day today. And now I came home from running to the smell of my pot roast, and my favorite trash program (I LOOOOOVE NEW YORK!) on the Idiot Box.

That's my advice.

:D

Hey! Just checking back with everyone to see how everyone's doing! ^^ I'm happy! I just got back from a 36 minute jog and I feel great! :) This thread is doing great for me! Penny-dreadful: Okay, the way that I finally got myself up off my lazy butt to exercise was by keeping an exercise journal. I took all my measurements (waist, hips, thighs, etc.) and wrote em down, and decided how much I wanted to lose from each one (like. 2 inches off my thighs, 4 off my waist, etc). Then, every time I exercise, I just record what I did and how long I did it. Every week or so I take new measurements and write them down, and have a mini-party every time I lose something (okay, so I've only lost a bit off my waist, and I just found that out last night, and my "party" was really me just hopping around my room all retarded and excited, but whatever works XD)

For some reason, it really helps to have to be accountable for something, even if it's only for myself XD I just really can't stand when I don't exercise out of laziness and I have to write down "was lazy today" in my journal :3

And if you have a DS or a book you're really into or something, bring it along with you when you work out!! I know I've said that like 18645634 times, sorry XD But it SERIOUSLY DOES HELP!! It not only keeps you from getting bored and giving up, but I've found when I'm fighting a really hard boss in Odin Sphere or Kingdom Hearts 2, I pedal a lot faster for some reason. I guess I just get *really* excited :3

Good luck!

+My boyfriend and I went on an hour long walk at 6 AM a couple days ago.

+I haven't had the same cravings for food I used to, so I'm happy that my stomach is learning not to eat all the time.

+ We're going to write out a "Daily Goal" checklist for ourselves to make sure we're getting everything done that we need to.

+ No sit-ups yet. I haven't had a moment where I can just sit and get them done. Too much work :/

Penny, another good way is to bring someone with you to work out.. I have the SAME problem. I'm very very lazy. But having someone with you helps WONDERS. Given if it's not someone who doesn't want to be there. If you work a lot like I do, it's a good to do early mornings, helps you wake up. Also music helps as well. Usually something with a good beat, keeps you singing rather than how much it sucks or how tired you are.

X'D

ack-
I have really really short/chubby legs.

This has been bugging me for a while now~

btw, I'm only 5'0"
T_T;; and I currently weigh about 90lbs >__>;

If there's one thing in my years of losing weight and bulking is that there is no such thing as "target weight loss" Its impossible, you cant target a specific area to lose weight. Your body decides where you lose weight first, and where you lose it last. So for anyone who is trying to lose weight in only a specific area...sorry...not gonna happen.

For you my advice is this. Diet. When it comes to losing weight its mostly all about Diet. You are already rather light, so losing weight for you could actually be unhealthy. My advice is to eat much healthier, and get a steady stream of exercise. Do not focus on working out your legs trying to target weight loss. Just get some cardio routines going, and maybe some very basic weight training.

If it doesnt work than you may just have to deal with having a bit meatier legs. Some girls are like that, just like some have larger chests etc. Its not necessarily a bad thing.

I don't think I need to change [B]what I eat, just maybe change how much I eat.

Same for you as above, you cant target weight loss, so by getting more in shape you can only hope that you will lose the weight around your face. The body is a tricky thing though...and the place it stores fat first, is usually the place it loses fat last. Typically in women this is the chest, thighs, and face. Men being stomach first mostly.

For you to want definition the answer is same as above. Its all about Diet. You can work your abs to death and they'll never show if you dont have a healthy diet. Ask any body builder, they bulk first (eat a lot and gain muscle, but also fat too) and the cut (diet really well so the fat comes off and shows off the muscles really well)

So for you, try cutting down on calories and eating healthier foods while continuing to do some exercises to build the muscles you want to show later.

Hope that helps!

I am definatley joining this thread. It's hard for me to find motivation to work out since It's all on me. hopefully this thread will give me motivation.^_^

Some ideas to help me along the way:
eating sugar free gum when I NEED candy
drink more green tea
eat smaler portions (my family insists on making enough food for 8 when theres 4 of us)

I prefer yoga or pilates to running but im slowly accepting the fact that I might have to run.... noooo

this might sound harsh but soemone told me that if I craved junk food I should brush my teeth or use listerine that gross minty taste always makes me loose my craving

I'm also trying to get in shape for a Sailor Moon cosplay. I'm doing pgsm Sailor Mars

Yes, Pilates and Yoga really wont help you lose the few extra pounds. You need to get your heart pumping. But it doesnt necessarily have to be through running. You can ride a bike, Swim, Jump rope, or even Skipping can be means of good cardio. As long as you can get your heart pumping for at least 30 minutes a day, it will do your body good.

That's a really, really, REALLY good idea. I don't really know how much I want to lose. . .I just want to get rid of the flab. But if I can remember to keep up a notebook, that would most certainly keep me motivated! (Besides this thread, that is)

I'm 5'10" and I weigh 128-ish. but I know its mostly muscle because I work out alot. My family owns a kickboxing and karate gym so staying fit is a big deal and my parents get on my case sometimes. I was weighing like 136, still very muscular though, a few months ago though, then I went on this diet with my mother.
It had alot of protien very few carbs (which sucked for me because I love rice)
It focused on small 3 meals and 3 snacks and not eating too late in the evening and it helped alot I would loose like a 2lb on some days. When I felt my wieght was good I stopped the diet (RICE! YAY!!)

My brother trains me in Wushu, its a crazy workout but damn it pays off nice.
My whole family thinks my leg muscles should be more toned though.
As far as getting rid of things like belly fat goes, you can do all the sit-ups and stuff you want and it wont make much of a difference. You have to do cardio to burn the fat, then your muscles show.
I actually reccomend going to the store and into the beauty section and buy a can on Abolene makeup remover.
slather some on your belly or thighs or whatever and put on like a sweat belt or something similar and go jogging. It opens up the pores and makes you sweat more, reducing water weight.

okaaay, i've had an awfully stressful past 2 days, honestly, and mister darling Whiney_Farmboy surprised me with my favorite pizza and a milkshake and a bubble bath to cheer me up. ^_^ so i soaked in the tub, re-read NANA, and ate my feelings. BUT!

even as bummed and exhausted as I was feeling, i STILL went to the gym tonight, by myself, in the cold! and watched 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' on the TV while i did my running. sooo that cheered me up a bit.

i guess the point of this post is IT'S OKAY TO SLIP UP SOMETIMES! sometimes you need a milkshake and some pizza. i think most important for most of us is KEEPING ACTIVE EVERY (or MOST) DAYS!

i probably shouldn't encourage pizza and ice cream. haha, i guess i just wanted to say HAY! DON'T BEAT YOURSELVES UP! SOME PEOPLE DON'T EVEN TRY!

<3 you cats. keep up the good work!

-I spend too much time drooling over cosplay photos when I should be working out. :P

Oh man, oh man, oh man. That is like my whole life right there. I feel your pain so hard, my friend.

And in other news, I'm finally joining this thread that mah BFF (well, one of them :P) d1g1tini started.

I'm 5'2", 22 years old, and I don't want to talk about my weight in pounds. Let's just say it's too damn much. I'm not like a narwhale or anything, but I'm not comfortable with my figure and am finally ready to change it.

I can't remember who said it, but a few posts back someone mentioned how they kept setting goals for themselves...being fit by January, and then when January rolled around it became May, etc. Well, that's exactly how I work. Basically, I go to a con, I see the pictures of myself afterwards and I'm horrified, so I want to change it....but then I go back to being lazy and stuck in the act of obsessing over it that I don't actually DO anything.

My archnemeses are the potato in all its cruel forms and cheese in most of its cruel forms. I eat them all the time. Granted, aside from that I eat pretty healthy---I don't like a lot of sweets, and I naturally like things like fruit, salads, hummus, garlic, lean meats, and even raw oats---but it doesn't matter. My love for the potato and cheese overcomes all things. I also love anything with creaminess---alfredo sauce, chowder soups, etc---so I really have to fight the urge for that.

Oh yeah, I'm also hella lazy, and I hate being sweaty & get bored while exercising...so I need creative solutions. I used to go to the gym with my DS and it worked wonders, but then I ran out of FF games XD. Any good game suggestions? I have a laptop, and if somehow I can finagle it so that I can play WoW at the gym, I swear to god I will lose all my fat in like three months. Statistical impossibility, you say? Hey, I need some level 70s and I need to lose weight. I'm dedicated to the former, so the latter will follow :P.

Okay, so since this is already long and rambly, I'll add some of my "goal costumes":

~Sailor Jupiter. I WILL NOT BE THE BIGGEST ROUNDEST PLANET DAMMIT.
~Mink from Dragon Half. Skimpy! But I love her. And absolutely cannot be fat for that.
~Seras Victoria from Hellsing, to join my friends' amazing Hellsing group. This is like an "in progress to fitness" costume since I think Seras looks better a little rounded and chubby, so this is a good "on the way" goal costume.
~Female night elf from WoW. YEAH I SAID IT. A Draenei, too.

So uh, yeah. Hi everyone! My husband is naturally a very fit guy who loves to work out at the gym...so I need some motivation from other lazy people coz he's like "Just go! You'll love it if you go enough :D".

I'm hoping this thread works out. Anyone got any good diet ideas for someone terribly addicted to potatoes and cheese? XD

~Audrey

tini, I luff you ;_;

I have been trying to get in shape for quite some time.. and try and try but never really succeed (it doesn't help that I waste a few hours a day commuting back and forth for school... *cries*)

I'm 5'9"-ish and rather curvaceous. Not that I want to lose my curves, just the lovehandles, tone my tummy, and maybe (if things work out well) drop 20 or so lbs to get to my dream weight. I really want to do a kinda sexy Rikku cosplay that I'm designing for Otakon next year, but I also want to do a Burst Angel (http://www.justmanga.com/jmcover/338210.jpg) (Meg) cosplay for a con in June/early July. And maybe whatever I get done for cons before then as well.

I have been cutting back on what I eat a LOT. A few people have commented that I look skinnier, but the scale's not reading any differently ;_; It doesn't help that when I get home, I'm kinda tired and bleah and reach for feel-good food... and that they don't have much in the way of "healthy" at college.

And ditto on me for the cosplay photo drooling x3

1) YAY YAY AUDREY IS HERE YAY! *poops confetti* :D :D :D

2) shinju - that burst angel thing is SO. CUTE. that's like the cutest thing ever. i think i've seen that before and thought it was like, 'original concept selphie' or something. does your college have a salad bar? can you take cartons of fresh veggies back to your dorm? (and ruin them not with dressing and cheese, haha! i know i can do that.) i know i've read about other collegiates doing that, and it has always seemed like an awesome unending source of healthy.

i ate APPALLINGLY today, but i HAVE been exercising for real, no b-s, every single day since Black Friday! i'm real proud of myself.

but i keep having this fear that i'll work out every day until katsucon and still see no results >_<;;;....someone, please, assure me that that's not the case?

it's SO hard for me to diet AND exercise, since exercising every day makes me PSYCHO hungry. i've been eating lots of lean meats and veggies though, i'm doing....welll.....okay! not as good as i have been at exercising, but Zanarkand wasn't built in a day, or whatever. <3

I have really wanted to get into shape for conventions for awhile now so I'm glad I found this thread~ I wouldn't exactally call myself fat, I just really want to get into shape so I can coplay as Zakuro from Tokyo Mew Mew or one of the Sailor Moon characters without looking dumb ^_^;;
My Goal is to pretty much tone my stomache, my legs are somewhat ok from playing Tennis all summer and halfway into the school year but my stomache bothers me, I really need to tone it!
My disadvantages would probabally be that I am super lazy, all I pretty much do is go on the computer and when I think I should excersize I get too lazy to start. I also am still in High School so I don't have very much time to excersize with High School, Homework, Forensics, Colorguard, Plays, and all the other many activities I am in. Also I flew off a ski jump awhile ago and tore my ACL cord and had to get surgery on it, my knee is not fully recovered from it yet so I can't do much with it. And lastly, I love food. I usually do not eat healthy because I get a craving for something with sugar~ Although, I already started my getting in shape by eating healthy. So far I have kept to it and I started a week before thanksgiving!

I've always said health is more important than weight. ^_^ It's better to be healthy than try to live up to other people's expectations of "skinny".

I'm a pretty small person, but recently I've been eating less and working out more, trying to tone up and build strength and endurance. Rather than stuff my face with fast food like I've been known to do, I've been eating more sandwiches, rice cakes (the ranch ones are great!) and apple slices. ^_^ No one said being healthy couldn't also be tasty!

Actually, the last time I broke down and had McDonald's, it made me really sick to my stomach. D: My body just isn't used to that crap anymore!

Okay, so this thread is totally working for me. Seriously, after like two months of doing nothing but situational exercise, today I managed 67 crunches (even though I had to stop after every 20 for a couple seconds XD), and yes I know that they don't make you lose belly fat but I use to have what I call the Venus de Milo 4-pack and I loved it, so I want it back :P. I also did 34 pushups...yeaaaah not too good at that. I went up and down all the stairs in our house a bunch...word. I'm getting over my cold pretty fast so tomorrow I go to *dun dun dun* the GYM.

Also I've had a HUGE craving for french fries all damn day. Like, a painful craving. But instead I made some rice with a little shaving of butter and a good amount of salt and pepper, and it made the craving go away. I know, not exactly healthy, but it's a start, right?

Word. This place is awesome.

YAAAAY Audrey is here now!!! <3

Okay, so yesterday I was kind of bad, I had a PB&J sandwich and like SIX pieces of cookie dough, AND I didn't exercise (but that was coz my kat peed on my bed and I had to do like four loads of laundry, AND because I had to finish writing up my lesson plan and assessments that were due today).

So, today I was super duper bad >.> I had two slices of pizza and THREE cupcakes at work (the directors at my school bought us lunch today).

HOWEVER. I came home and was all 'BLARGH, I don't wanna exercise!' but I DID ANYWAY!! Go me :) Thanks to GreenApple for all her encouragement, it really helped XD And I also found out that my mile time has improved! It's gone down from 14:43 to 14:17!!! YAY!! In addition to running, I did 4 miles on the bike (about 15 minutes) and did some chest and arm weights, and some tummy work :)

I've also packed myself lunch all this week (except today, coz of PIZZA), and I've cut out all unhealthy snacks (except peppermint patties coz I have an insatiable love of those things).

< / babble >

Good luck to everyone!!!!

Since I'm not so much about losing (non-existant) fat, but regaining muscle, today while I was bored at work, I decided I'd do some working out in the back room between customers. I didn't have hand weights, but I did have... gallon jugs full of industrial sanitizer! :D Unfortunately, the size and handle positions make them kind of awkward to work with, and certain exercises really can twist the wrists - and at only one gallon apiece, they're not even heavy enough to really make me feel like I'm working out. I think I'll just have to lug the hand weights back and forth...

Also perhaps buy ankle weights, and rather than sticking them in my backpack, just put them on before leaving for work and wear them all night. When I worked inside the big store, I literally was walking 20+ miles a day without a problem - now I work in a little gas station in the middle of the night, and don't have to walk nearly as far to help customers. (Some of them ask why I RUN across the store to get their stuff, they're not in so big a hurry... I find it hard to explain that it's my workout. Hahah.) So when I am actually walking around, might as well make it count a little more.

I was actually considering just wearing wrist weights and ankle weights all the time... and then suddenly I had Rock Lee flashbacks. Hahahhahaa. At least now I have an anime character to model my grand plan on...

And by the way, for those who ARE trying to lose weight? A couple different brands of ice cream have started making this "churned style" light ice cream with less fat and calories... and although I traditionally have been disgusted or at least unimpressed by light ice cream, the churned style stuff is great in every brand I've tried. So if you too were wary of trying the new stuff because light ice cream usually sucks... give it a shot. =)

Hi! I'm AKARi:BiERNOT!
So, I have a few original costume ideas coming up @ Tekkoshocon in PA. Even though it's pretty far away, (Tekkoshocon being the 11-13 of April), I am still extremely far off from what I need to be. I am 5'2, and being short makes weight a difficult thing to deal with because I've always been a little chub chub. I also have man calves, (haha! only way to describe this feature!), and I'm having a really hard time fitting cosplay boots because of this!!

Factors of Diet Failure:
- Family life. It may sound strange, but the stress in my household ALWAYS makes me want to eat like a pig. *oink oink*
- No support. I have very few friends in my area.
- The inability to take the negativity towards my weight and use it as motivation. (Which I'd really love to have!)
- No license. I'd be better off /away/ from my household exercising but it's kinda an excuse at the same time.
- I eat my emotions. ;_; LAME.

PLANS:
> Starting to walk again. (Even though I've heard that's why I HAVE those damned man calves.)
> I'd like to lose the man calves, belly, double-bubble butt, inner thighs, and my arm flab.

I'm nervous because I'm 17, and I have no knowledge of dieting. Can anyone help me not only with encouragement, but also with perhaps education on proper diet and exercise in the time frame given until the convention?

My AIM is PretendAkari. Please contact me if you think the information I'd be providing breaks the rules, (as we are not to disclose our weight, which I understand completely!)...

And I added you on my AIM list d1g1tini! I'd love to talk to you! It's great to have friends to help encourage you! I'm sure that as long as you work hard, it will pay off and people will notice the results.

Thank you everyone!

I'm going to join in on this one to. Lets see...

Weekness's
1. Exercise is boring!
2. I love food!
3. I have a terrible problem with emotional/boredom eating
4. WoW
5. TV

Strengths
1. I joined a gym thatís convenient to my house and I do go 3 days a week, most of the time.
2. I physically can't eat a large amount of food in one sitting. (But I can graze with the best of them :( )

Conflicts
1. I work full time and go to school full time
2. My work hours make getting to the gym before it closes difficult.

Foods
1. Crackers, heck any starch
2. Soda (diet but still bad for me)
3. The occasional fast food
4. Chinese food YUM

Goals
1. Increase from 3 days to 4 days a week at the gym on November 1st
2. Stop grazing
3. Eating more lean protein and veggies and less carbs.
4. Lose another 45 lbs by December 2009

Right now I am in the concept stage of two Cosplays. One is BT from .Hack/Sign and the other is an original gothic Victorian costume. Both need me to tone up a bit or I'll look kinda silly. My Goal is to loose another 20 lbs before Anizona.

My biggest questions are:
Q) What exercises help us lose that belly fat best?
Q) What's an easy diet to help one break the stranglehold of junkfood?

--Blake

I know from my own experience, if you have the will power to stay away from a particular type of food that you eat too much of for 2 to 3 weeks with absolutely no cheating, you will break the physical addiction to it. Now the mental I wane eat junk food! Thatís a lot different. But half the battle is getting over the chemical desire for it.

Rules? Pssh. i just was trying to make people who DON'T feel like disclosing their weights comfortable with that. like i sure don't want to disclose mine >_<;;

also, amazing discovery of the day - Uncle Ben's makes these little packets of brown rice. they have about 2 servings each, and they're ready to microwave. you literally just tear a corner and pop them in for 90 seconds, and they come out REALLY moist and fluffy and good, and i add just a bit of salt on them. i'm the world's biggest butter fiend, and i don't even add butter! even easier than fast food. ^_~ and they are whole grain and everything, minimal calories, and filling!

another good, quick, easy-lazy food for when you need something filling and low-cal is instant grits. mmmm salty corn porridge. but they have minimal calories too!

everyone be awesome today!! go get some exercise! (i'm encouraging you all cos i'm SORE today, and need the encouragement in return! ^_~)

tini: GO EXERCISE >D And I wore a kinda-more-covered-up version of Meg to the last con I was at and a couple people called me Selphie.. I even went to an FF shoot because a Yuna, Squall, and Lightning (FFXIII) were all like "Selphie come join us!" I didn't have the heart to NOT be Selphie, so... xD

I think I'm going to walk up and down the stairs here a bit. It's kinda tough when I can't put my 10-lb bag down anywhere x.x

Maybe I'll go running/something this weekend =D Or maybe I'll walk to the top of the tallest building on campus both before and after class tomorrow (that's about 12 flights of stairs o.o)

I also fought the urge for chocolate today =D Though I gave in to Poptarts this morning... ;_;

I had a pretty good day today, as well! I packed a very healthy lunch and didn't eat ANY of the copious amounts of chocolate that was in lunchroom today (and believe me, that's barely short of a miracle for me :3)

I'm just chilling for a few minutes (and cuddling my kat so she won't feel lonely :3) before I go and exercise.

P.S. GO EXERCISE d1g1tini, YOU CAN DO IT!!!

wooo! someone who knows advanced things! trust me, you'll get frustrated with threads like these when people who have no idea what they're talking about come in and give crappy advice to other people... at least i did... anyway, my questions!

do you have any articles that outline a weight training routine i could follow? i started with full body 5x5s doing the big three compounds and a few other spots, and right now i'm doing a two day split (two on/one off, three day cycle), working my lower body first (i need the extra energy for squats and deads) doing 3x12s. i'm not really plateauing, but i've been on that routine for six months, and i'm sure i'd see gains if i moved on.

5% bf? DAAAAMN! do you maintain that? i struggle to maintain 9%, and i've only been down to 7% once for about a week. luckily, i get good ab definition starting at 10%, but it still isn't where i want to be... how do you maintain a low bf%? i want to hear what specifically works for you (ex: do you cut carbs the day before you know you're going to binge? depleting my glycogen like that helps me).

lastly, are you a fan of the traditional bulk phase followed by a cut, or did you start slow-bulking once you lost all the weight you wanted? i've heard that people make the same gains on a slow bulk staying at ~8 or 9% bf (when you factor in the muscle lost during cutting). i want to put on a little bit more mass, but con season seems to be year 'round for me DX

THANKS!

Well...I also want to lose a few (about 10lb) So I can do an Asuka cosplay (in the plugsuit so I can't afford to be overweight for that.) and so I can feel way better about myself.

The good:
- My hyperactivity makes me move around a lot
- I run around a lot in my room
- I have tons of energy
- Can't stay still in one place

The bad:
- I have 0 motivation
- I eat when I'm bored or sad (T_T)
- Everytime I say I'm going to start to lose weight I can't even begin to fulfill it.
- My parents don't let me out of the house =\
-No friends near my house
- The computer seems to rule my life. ( :bigcry: )

Although right now I just jogged in place for 10 minutes, 47 situps, and 50 jumping jacks, I have to keep that up (I heard from my gym teacher that every week you should add 5 more minutes in the jogging) so I can do it at least for 5 times a week. Worse my family seems to serve food for 2 in one plate! o_O I mean how can I tell them that I, a 13 year old twerp (5ft most likely weighing around 115lb is not very tall ¨¨) shouldn't eat that much?

Well one of my favorite ways to excersise is to dance. Its easy and more fun then regular exercise, just find some hiphop songs and dance. My friend does that(he is kind of obsessed with dancing now) he even dances in the middle of class with no music. Good songs are China Wine by Ho Yeow Sun and 2 step by DJ Unk because they are both fast paced song. If you want songs look under my youtube account because i have some fast paced songs and some fun songs to dance too http://www.youtube.com/profile_favorites?user=Moonscara . Free Running is good to if you can, but can be dangerous if you are not
very athletic if not just run around randomly, jump around, slide through bars and jump over benches.
I am 5'10" and huge 180lbs and trying to get down to at least 155lbs.
Oh and I am also wearing ankle weights to increase my running speed and increase my leg strength.

My Plan:
Switch from soda to water and whole milk to skim milk
Start actually eating vegetables
Run 2 miles a day
Do conditioning 3 times a day 2 times on schooldays
Once i get some more muscle and leg strength gonna start Free running

My Weakness:
Laziness
Fast Food love Popeyes and KFC
My parents feed me two much they put about 3 servings on one plate.

Someone told me it takes about a month to break a habit or get into a new one. =) Consistency is key! I managed to cut out all pop (diet and all) within a couple weeks. I'm also in the groove of exercising 3 times a week now, although I'm trying to up it to 5 times a week.

I have been in the Losing Weight thread, but it's sunk back a bit and for some reason this has taken over, so I'll post...

I just wanted to say, in case some people don't realize... You shouldn't diet. You should work on living a healthier lifestyle and changing for the better instead of wanting a quick fix. And that doesn't mean then that you can never go out to eat or have desert (sp?). Just make sure to keep track of your calories, do some Googling to find out how many calories a day is right for you. Quick fixes will just come back to haunt you later. Aim for 1 - 2 pounds a week. Of course it's exciting to lose more, but you have less of a chance of keeping it off if you do. And exercising IS important. If you think it's boring, then really search for something that works for you. If you've always wanted to learn to dance, do karate, or how to swim... Now's the time! Make a hobby out of it. =D

I have a friend that free runs (friend via online, so I can't join in). I hate running, personally, but if you like it then great. =D I have been doing Tae-Bo and am going to do my Carmen Electra DVD (#2, the actual workout) and some dance video a friend gave me so that I don't do the same thing every day.

I think the hardest thing for me (other than keeping in mind I don't have a humming bird's metabolism) was drinking 8 glasses of water a day. Now I have the routine down, but I still don't have a big enough bladder for it. xD

Gah.. I think I'll join in. -.-"
I'm actually quite satified with my weight and all.. but I have a very bad stamina and I would like to get in a better shape overall. A flat tummy wouldn't hurt either, as well as eating more healthy.

I easily get bored from working out, so I really need to take it slow and try to make some small changes to my everyday routine:

- drink water instead of juices and soda
- cut back on sugar and salt
- make a few crunches every day
- take the stairs instead of the elevator
- maybe run once in a while

my weakness - oh my.. I have loads, but these are the worst:

- zero motivation
- salt!!
- sugar, candy, chocolate,...
- smoking (maybe I should quit o_O)
- laziness
- alcohol
- sitting on front of the computer and envy people with perfect bodies instead of getting up and doing something
- I hate going outside when it's cold, windy, too hot, etc..

another problem:

- I have a full-time job where I sit almost the whole day in a chair hunched over a table. And that's starting to give me some really bad backache.
So I guess I should include some workout for my back too.

Today's a good day to start, so I'm off now for a little walk.. ^^

Ok! Its december, my goal is to add another day of work out to my week. So that would be 4 days, 30 mins each. Ugg.. its been hard enough to go three. Then again, maybe going every day would be easier then going fewer.

For those of you who are into exercise pretty serious... what are some good exercises for the flaby under arms, inner thighs and lower stomach? Nothing crazy please, I have arthritis and a bad back, so things like kick boxing, miles of jogging or extream weights are not an option.

I have to join in, I just found a full body picture of myself from my Snr. year in High School, and all my telling myself my body hasn't changed...yah, I see the lie in that now! ^^

This working out thing I've been wanting to do for a long while, but here are my obstacles:
-I'm a procrastinator
-I'm easily distracted
-I have severe allergies 2/3's of the year and HATE using my inhaler
-I'm lazy
-My best friend is lazier, and while my boyfriend works out, A LOT his gym is far far away and VERY expensive.
-I'm moving soon.

So my goals, regain control over my thunder-thighs and backside, firm up the tummy too to decrease back-aches.
And start running, the more I do, the more lung capacity and the less severe my allergy/energy incuced asthma will be! :D

Things I've already done
-Cut down on Soda, now it's ONE kitty-cocktail a month
-Dessert 3 times a week(from 7 times), at some point maybe I can get it down to 2 times...
-Take vitamins, multi, omega, potassium etc...
-Don't be a social eater! (my group of friends meets up at food places a lot because we aren't big drinkers. When this happens I used to get full meals, now I get an appetizer, soup or salad if I get anything at all).
-Eat more whole foods (I decided why fill myself with garbage and empty calories?)

So, we'll see, I'll start simple and as time allows, a walk everday (with the dog, and or friends) and do pilates. And none of my deciding, 'but I did thus and such today, so I don't NEED to take a walk.'

After the move is complete, more intensive workout should follow. :)

ANOTHER MEMBER OF MY CLUB! haha, i've been calling all us who are on here for that reason 'butt buddies.' :D totally innocent, right?

welcome!

so tonight we went for our grocery trip for the next few weeks, and i think we did a damn good job! things we usually buy and didn't -
- beef (instead got turkey, tuna, and lowfat hot dogs)
- sweets (got yogurt! and crackers.)
- cheese (low fat cheese? better? and skim milk)
- white bread and white rice (whole wheat! and brown rice!)
aaand we bought LOTS of yummy fresh veggies and fruit! celery, corn, cukes, spinach, oranges, apples, strawberries....mmm. all in all, a successful and i hope healthy shopping trip!

QUESTION OF THE WEEK! :D
- What's YOUR grocery list look like? now? and what do you FEEL it should look like? basically, what's your ideal healthy shopping list, and what's the reality of that? i think this is a fun question.

luck and love to you all!

Thank you for the welcome! I like the "butt-buddies' club name ^^

As for grocery list, mostly I just have to shop for lunch and breakfast, and for awhile I was going on the cheap. Now rather than ramen noodles I get organic noodle lunches like Annie Chun and Trader Joes stuff. Still not the best, but far better :) breakfast is usually either oatmeal with REAL maple syrup or low sugar jam, or organic low-sugar granola with yogurt rather than milk.

As well as my walk tonight I went rock-climbing! It was awesome! I need to start doing it more, I know I'll be aching tomorrow. I love it, it's working out without feeling like your working out ^^

*shyly peaks around the corner*

i have been a vewy bad girl :(

so i eat healthy at breakfast and lunch (usually an apple or special K cereal and for lunch a turkey sammich loaded with veggies...i even stopped eating cookies and drinking cokes!)

but then comes the point of -after work-
i eat and snack and then eat dinner and then snack and eat until 3 in the morning!! and i discovered reeses in the pantry and mountain dew in the fridge...it was all over then.

oh and there is also the fact that i havent exercised ONCE since i posted here for the first time *hangs head in shame*

WHAT SHALL I DO WITH MYSELF!?! i just have no motivation to exercise after working all day, and i just cant stop the excessive eating! thats the reason i havent posted lately is because ive been failing :(

BUT not anymore! i will force myself tomorrow! if i dont want to work out, or want to eat that cookie, i will think of my post here tomorrow night and will stop myself or start myself (whichever applies) and i will SUCCEED!!!

yay for cosplay comradery!!!

I just had a quick question. ^_^

So, I wanted to get myself toned up and all, but I notice if I run for a certain amount of time, or I'm doing the exercises on my Tae bo dvd, sometimes I get a pain on my side, like right where your pelvis is. It's not too bad at first, but then it sharpens a little. Anyone know what that is?

It sounds like lack of oxygen in the muscles to me (though I can't remember the technical term). It happens when you breathe shallowly and thereby cause the lack of oxygen in your breathing apparatus, creating a form of acid, hence the pain. Try breathing in and holding your breath for a while, or stand up, then lean down and pretend you're picking a rock up from the ground, very slowly. That always works for me. ;)

mjjluver: Most any ab workout will do it (situps, crunches, bicycles, etc) If you want more info ask.

Missha: I sometimes get the same pains when I run, I've found its because of food, (though my pain can get really sharp like someone stabbed me in the side). The best way that I've found to stop that pain is to wait to run until about 3 hours after eating, by that time most of the food has been digested (if you ate light), and I can run forever and not get the pains.

Soooo...the Three of Cups kinda failed this weekend XD.

On Saturday, bunnymachine and I tromped around in the woods, which is good...but Saturday night all three of us drank a copious amount of booze and ate pizza and cookies. WHOOPS. It made all of us a little ill though (not just hungover! ill from the junk) so I guess it's a good sign that our bodies are getting healthier.

I am now on ONE WEEK of no potatoes/cereal/creamy savoury foods. I even managed to not eat potatoes while hungover T_T so not easy. But! I'm doing it!

I've also been (somehow) cutting back on salt. This might even end up being harder than the no-potatoes thing, because I love salt. I'll eat it by itself. But I've been eating less, and not putting it on any food (except rice, and pasta...but I've only eaten those each once this week). I'm using roasted garlic as a substitute and it's working very well.

As for exercise, I've NOT been going to the gym...eh heh...but that starts tomorrow. Today I have a bunch of stuff to do at school so I won't be home til probably around 8, but I can go tomorrow :3.

Oh, d1g1tini, as for groceries, I need to NOT buy frozen food (achieved!), cheese (also achieved, though with much sadness), or cereal (also achieved...weep), and instead buy lots of raw stuff and lean meats. Kevin (my husband) and I went to Costco yesterday and got a huge amount of raspberries, clementines, cucumbers, peppers, grapes, and carrots for cheap. I am just trying to fill up on more healthy foods...raw oats are helping, and veggies and fruits fill in the rest.

Sushi is good too! I figure a lot of people here like sushi but if you want to go out to eat, go get sushi instead of steak and potatoes. You'll feel better afterwards!

I'm glad to see so many new people on this thread! We can doooo iiiiit guys :3.

(I wish I wasn't always so long-winded. But that's how I roll.)

Whoa. I forgot I was subscribed to this thread. ^^' Woopsies.

Today, I feel amazing. :3 I had a school dance last night, and I danced my butt off, quite literally. I ate somewhat well (though I fell victem to my big enemy, PIZZA!, again. Lol.), and I guess you could say I excersized. And Today, I ate fruit for breakfast (an apple), and I ate the schools lunch (something I should stop doing, because we all know how healthy school food is for you.). I feel really light and hyper. It's too bad I'm at school, because if I wasn't I'd be able to run around and dance around. (Possibly play some DDR. It's been FOREVER sense I played that...)

Does anyone know what a good time to stop eating big meals at night is? I've heard some people say 8:00, or 7:00, and so on. So I'm a little confused. ^^'

Everyone, make sure you stretch after exercising! For one thing, your muscles are already warmed up so you won't hurt yourself. For another thing, stretching keeps your muscles long and limber while keeping strength in, which is how ballerinas can support their body weight weight en pointe with their ramrod skinny little stick legs. I should know, I used to be one of those people before my Achilles tendonitis hurt too badly for her to continue.

I feel really good that this weekend I exercised for about an hour a day. Ballroom dancing is SUPER fun. And I didn't cheat and leave out my weight training!

If my stomach is going to be out I definitely want my little pudge gone.Crunches are always an option. Do 2 sets of 12-15, holding at the top for 2-5 seconds. You can do a variety of different crunches, too... Normal, reverse (lifting your but to target the lower stomach), crosses for the obliques... =)

Also, Tae-Bo is actually helping build some muscle on my stomach (which I hope eventually helps with the pudge). You're supposed to keep your abs tight the whole time which is hard, but it helps your core a lot. >.<

Please, Master Creator, please?

i got to tell ya that building up muscle in the arm is pretty easy! you just got to keep using those weights! don't stop like i did! i used the excuse 'well now that i'm pregnant i don't have to work out any more'.... but i could have still used little 5 pound weights for my arms... now they are flappy and such! so we kinda got the same goal! we just gatta stick to those weights!!!

tini, I luff you ;_;

And ditto on me for the cosplay photo drooling x3

wow! i wish i had curves @.@(i have no butt or chest! >.>) i have been making plans to cosplay Jo so i gatta loose my tummy too!

lol i know people who can, including myself lose weight and build muscle purely by doing push-ups , since its one of the most effective ways of working out your body, although my dad was aboxer so i learnt how to do rapid circuits that make you sweat to death, gets you fit anyway, i tend to do excercises at night if i cant sleep untill i can't go on anymore, you feel great in the morning too.

No worries, I have no butt or chest either. I mean really, no chest >_> so hopefully by working out that will change a bit, even if only slightly.

And eating healthier and drinking lots of water is really helping me when I work out, I don't tire as easily and I can exceed further in the number of times I can lift weights with each arm before I get tired.

GOOOOOOOOOOO Orihime-chan!!!!!!! Keep it up! :)

This weekend, as said previously by GreenApple, I was seriously, seriously bad. I drank a lot of booze and sugary juice and ate a lot of pizza and cookies. Then on Sunday I sat around and *thought* about exercising but did laundry and watched Evangelion instead :3

Okay, now for a self-centered VICTORY POST:

Tonight, I biked 9 miles in 30 minutes. Then I--get this, guys--I RAN A WHOLE MILE WITHOUT STOPPING. HELLLL YESSSSS I RUUUULE THE EARTH!

Well, maybe not XD But I'm seriously pumped! I haven't been able to do that in almost four years! It *did* take me 12 minutes (exactly ^_^) to do it, but I'm still proud!

My new goal: bring my mile time down to 11 minutes by the end of the week! Wish me luck :)

And GOOD LUCK to everyone else!! You can alllllllllllll do it!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3

Also something tasty and low-cal and filling i discovered - Shredded turkey lunchmeat in celery, like little turkey boats! Mmmm.

Umm...Oha everyone!

I'm nyachyan! I'm trying to get toned and lose some weight for ACEN in May, not to mention Prom somewhere in that time frame as well!

Bad Food Habits:

Chocolate! I love the stuff to death
Coke-a-Cola! Its, like, my cure drink! I get intense cravings for it like no other drink!.
Not eating! I know this sounds like an odd thing to put here, but being busy in High School and having crappy, unhealthy food as my only option, I tend to skip any real form of breakfast or lunch. [I snack on fruit and Soy Chips from the vending machines until I get home]

Good Food Habits

Wheat Allergy! I cut down on wheat a bit ago and found that I felt better and healthier immidietally. I've always been allergic, but I loved pasta too much to give it up.
Veggies and Fish! I've started to really like things like tomatoes and cucumber, salmon and tuna! I hated them before!

Bad Physical Habits:

Computer! I get so drawn into things that I really dont care about. I've found myself sitting in front of the computer for hours not knowing what to do with myself!
Lazy Friends! Example: I'm in a gym class where you create your own workout schedual. My only other real friend in the class is this awesome girl but she never wants to DO anything. She always says she's 'too lazy', and it drags me down often as well.
Hurt Knee! I hurt my knee running a few weeks ago, and I've found if I start jogging near the same speed and amount of time as when I hurt it, it starts being so painful I have to stop!

Good Physical Habits:

Jogging! While not as good as when I hurt my knee, I can run around a 10 minute mile on a normal day.
DDR! A habit I recently revisited, I've been trying to burn around 4 jogged miles worth of DDR daily.

Please support me! I'm hoping to reach my goal weight and drop some pant sizes [YEAH BIG BUTT AND THIGHS] by May!

Well I guess I'll post a little something in here.

I've been trying to loose weight for like 3 years now. I keep loosing weight and gaining it back. One time I got to my goal, but I gained it back very fast. My real problem is laziness and not really having any motivation.
As for exercise I mostly jog/run on a mini tramp with music (anime music videos ^^) because it cushions my joints. Then I do some sit ups and a bit of weight lifting with my happy dumbbell. But as of lately I haven't been exercising due to finals coming up in college, and I'm worried I'm going to eat alot during Christmas since I am an emotional eater particularly when I'm bored or depressed.
So basically my plan is to hopefully be at my target weight by my next con which is possibly going to be held next October. I also need to cut back on calories/carbs and eat more vegetables (I already eat a ton of fruits since I'm like a fruit fanatic ^^).
On a final note it also doesn't help that I live with people who love to eat food and don't care about their weight. I try to hold back and stop myself, but I want to have what their eating. 0.0 In other words they aren't much help. So hopefully I can get back to my regular self and not be so down about being overweight.

So... this year towards the end of may i was planning on going to Sakura-con as Sasuke Uchiha (ya i know for all you anti-mainstream sasuke haters out there repulse and keep it to yourselves) but back to my point. im not overweight and im not really thin im really just kinda doughy and i wanted to tone up for my cosplay seeing as how its kind of a semi-revealing cosplay for guys. i figure i can play lots of DDR eat plenty of veggies and try to stay away from all the snack foods like chips and the christmas cookies. *cowers to the will of the christmas cookies* oh i hate them so. ok ADD strikes again ! back to what i was saying so ya this post helped me out alot with everyones input so thanks i feel like i have plenty of time to accomplish my goal now all i have to do is take some of the knowledge i have gained and put it to use (^_^)

Does anyone know of any exercises that tone the tummy?
If my stomach is going to be out I definitely want my little pudge gone.

I found this site here...even if you aren't looking for six-pack abs, they still have good information on toning the stomach and even some advice on what to eat and all that good stuff :bigtu:

Figured I've trolled this thread enough to post myself :P I'm trying to loose the last 10 pounds or so for my Grimmjow cosplay (and to a lesser extent my Sai cosplay), If I weren't cosplaying him I'd probably be find with where I'm at now, but I need abs, god abs... I lost 10 lbs during the summer, but now I've just plateaued out and can't drop under (currently my bf% is at 13ish) 160 no matter what I do... I want to be at around 150ish, by A-kon this summer. Ideally I want my bodyfat % to be at 6-7%

Bad Food Habits:
Carbs - I love it, pasta, sugar, oatmeal (good carbs, but still carbs), cookies etc
Chocolate - weird but I love the stuff (if I don't eat it I'm ok, but if I start I find it really hard to stop)
Desserts in general - Nuff said.
Portions - I find it hard to eat just a bit, even if its spinach or healthy food, I usually get quite a bit of it.

Good Food Habits
Healthy foods- I eat a bowl of raw spinach every meal with either some sort of meat product on top (dining hall food...) I also eat lean protein with every meal, usually either 2 fish things or 2 chicken breasts. I also eat yogurt with every meal (Love the stuff).

Eat frequenty - I try to eat small portions (see above) I sometimes succeed, and when I do I eat about 4-5 times a day. School gets in the way of that most of the time...

Bad Physical Habits:
Computer - I sit infront of it, I used to play computer games, now I just surf cosplay.com :D
Bad Knee/Shoulder - I have a bad knee (from weightlifting in high school/growth defect), so it's hard for me to do any lower body weight lifting, running is fine. I also have a bad left shoulder, I'm not sure what I did to it but if I do bench presses or the like it begins to hurt like a mother.
Lazy - if its cold I really don't want to drag my butt outside to go to the rec center to run (I usually get over that fact and go but still.) or getting up early enough to eat/run when I need to (my biggest problem).

Good Physical Habits:
Running - I can run 2 miles in 14-16 minutes. I can hold a good 8-9 minute mile for about 30 minutes to 45 minutes. Beyond that my knee will hurt the next day.
Weight lifting - I love to weight lift, (upper body only) and I love the soreness the next day, where it hurts to laugh, it makes me feel alive and I know I'll be stronger the next time I go.

I know I may not have as much to do as the rest of you guys, but I hope you'll root for me, I'll be cheering you guys on all the way, and I will provide any help that I can from what I've learned about loosing weight. (I used to be at 190 lbs, I'm at 160 currently.)

Weight was always an issue with me in high school I'm not terribly overweight but I am chubby. Summer after my junior year I went into depression over somethings (boyfriend left me, friend was murdered, list goes on) and I had no desire to eat. I'd stay up til about 7 am everyday, go outside and run until I couldn't breath, head back in and go to sleep. I went from 130 to 100 pounds. Needless to say I got several compliments when I returned to school. I didn't understand why everyone was asking how I lost so much weight. I never saw it though. So with all the compliments I started getting happy...and eating better....and gained all that weight back lol. Plus I'm in college as well so I've tacked on quite a bit of pouch on me. I'm back to about 145 or so. I'm not sure because my Mum swears that scales are the invention of Satan and refuses to own one.

I've began using my Wii workout more and by god the boxing is amazing cardio! I've brought my Wii fitness age from 77 to 65 in a week. =) Eventually when I box up things I'll have enough room to pull out my DDR stuff and wham away on that.

I have a HUGE sweet tooth. I love to snack. But I usually eat healthy snacks....actually I eat all the time lol. I eat when I feel like I'm hungry...which I am right now. -goes into the kitchen to scavenge-

I'm new to the boards but figured I'd post up here. I have a con in March that I want to get a bit more in shape for (I'm planning on going as Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop so it's a sweet costume, but I gotta look decent!). I'm not particularly out of shape, I'd just like to be in better shape and lose about 10-15lbs I've apparently gained over the last year. My main problem is sugar. I find myself consuming way too much of it, and it's just awful! I've started getting equal in my coffees and drinking diet cola instead of regular. This will cut my sugar at least in half, and I'm working towards eradicating it all together except once in a while. Also, moving in with my bf (and a roommate) has been a problem because since they're guys, they eat a lot and keep a lot of junky snacky type stuff around. So, i'm trying to be eating less and healthier (and LOTS of water!) and started hitting the gym again. I do yoga once a week and have started to try to go to the gym for some cardio and nautilis at least one-two times a week. I just want a slightly flatter tummy and slightly more toned legs for the con!! I'm glad other people think about this stuff too :D good luck to everyone and keep at it!

i was good today!!!!

i was supposed to be at work at 9am and i woke up at 8:51 so...i didnt eat breakfast! and at lunch of course i had the normal turkey on wheat loaded with veggies. when i got home i ate some almonds and a banana, and then for dinner, i had chinese food BUT i only ate a serving the size of my plam, and drank water. and i ate with chopsticks so i would eat slower and digest my food better lol!

as far as working out, i am about to do:
stretch
50 crunches
50 leg lifts (each leg)
25 squats
3 exercise videos i found on msn http://health.msn.com/fitness/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100176965&GT1=10710
stretch again

i will also be measuring my main areas that i want to lose inches in, to keep track and be encouraged!

First of all YAY FOR EVERYONE on this thread! I think getting motivated/changing your thinking is the first step towards getting in shape, and just by being on here everyone is accomplishing that much. I know it's true for me, and it seems to be working for everyone else, too.

After a week and a day of healthy eating (barring this weekend, which has already been discussed), I finally started going to the gym today  . I worked out for an HOUR and TEN MINUTES, which is like a new record for me. I started off with 20 minutes on this elliptical-ish leg machine (the cybex), and then did 10 minutes of freeweights, 10 minutes on the rowing machine, 10 minutes of belly work, and then another 20 on the bike. I AM SO PROUD OF MYSELF!

...except now I feel like I'm gonna die XD. In a good way, of course, but I could like barely make it up the stairs. Also I desperately need to shower/eat, which I will do after this. MY BACK MUSCLES HURT from the rowing machine. I don't think I've ever worked out my back muscles before XD.

My lunch is gonna be a turkey sammich on whole wheat bread with peppers, lettuce, tomato, and garlic hummus. Delicious!

I copied bunnymachine & started an exercise journal today, too,. Took all my measurements & weighed myself at the gym. I'm going to weigh myself at least once a week (or more if I get a scale for home) and take my measurements twice a month. I also ordered a swimsuit (yay, eBay) and plan to start swimming at the gym for hell of long.

So, KEEP IT UP GUYS! If my lazy arse can do it, I think anyone can :D.

~Audrey

@ iluvmycat9: Not eating breakfast isn't a good thing. =( Your daily calories also sounds like maybe only 1,000 to 1,200 (which you shouldn't go below 1,200 calories a day, that's like the minimum). Plus if you do all of those exercises, it'll be like you had no calories that day almost. @__@

People need to remember that skipping meals will slow your metabolism, you need to aim for small meals spread out (4 or 5 or even 6 meals a day), otherwise your body will think you can't find food and slow the metabolism. And if you have too few of calories then your body will slow the metabolism down to try and save what it can for your normal functions.

I hope everyone is being safe and not sabotaging their weight-loss!

Actually, once a week is more than enough. It's unrealistic to expect a visible loss over a couple of days, which might just make you bummed out and serve as counter-motivation instead. I used to work out five days a week while being on the WeightWatchers' diet (it worked wonders for me - it's easy, you can eat almost anything but in small amounts and no counting calories), and then I lost two pounds a week. This, however, is rather extreme.

So... don't overdo it with the scale. ;) But congratulations on getting started; it sounds like you're on the right track! ;)

i do realy need to get into shape in general, but it would also help in cosplay, especialy considering that 3 out of the 4 that are deffinates for this year involve short skirts and the other involves guarrentied showing of arms, neck and shoulders.
i dont want to loose weight as that is fine (i could be considered on the skinny side now, not in the past though), and i susspect that moving out of home to university has made me drop a little annyway.
i did drop a stone off last year that id been trying to loose for over 2 years (chocolate breakfasts and poptart lunches during secondary school, BAD!!!)
but i was left with a larger than wanted bum and thighs that make getting trousers that fit me realy difficult; it also made me realy self concious about that area.
11 years of horse riding has left me with quite a bit of bulk on my calves that looks ok (even better with a pair heels on!)

idealy, by may i would have liked to be better toned than i am now, especialy my legs.

bad food habbits
TEA, TEA, TEA AND MORE TEA,
COFFEE! bit of a caffene junkie.
sugar, sweet things in general, i cant just have one sick of pocky i always want the whole box!
pasta/noodles/general carb intake very high (typical student!),
lack of veg/fruit. normaly all i can afford is clemntines.
constant snacking on sugar.
i also get realy bad cravings for things, part of it is probably the change in diet that came with moving adn having to now cook for myself every night.

good food habbits
making sure i eat breakfast, normaly porridge or branflakes, or if i have time scrambled egg,
taking mulitvitamins every day, a habit i have been doing for 2 years now that i developed after my brother came back from his spell at uni and he was doing it.
no longer taking my coffee filled thermous into class every day, taking fruit juce every day, genraly cutting back on the caffene but still having a cup of tea when i come in.
sugary snack replacment with cranberries or dates.
having some mixed seeds (full of vitamins) every day. the ones i have are chilli flavored and very nice.
very few ready meals/takeaways, i cant realy afford them and i can cook for myself so why should i bother with them, if i realy dont want to cook properly i will make sandwidges.

bad physical habbits
im very lazy, and i know it.
the computer, the consoles; need i say more.
constant bad ankles/back, they were both sorted a while ago but still flare up occasionaly.

good physical habbits
i live on the 3rd floor of my building,
my art studio is on the second floor of the uni building that is a 10 min walk away,
the library is on the 2nd floor of ANOTHER building that is a diffrent 10 mins walk away,
and anime/games soc meetings are a good 1/2 mile walk away in another building (half mile from the nearest food shop and cash point as well).
archery (same 1/2 mile away), this has kept my lower arms in check for a good year now, but seems to have done nothing for my upper arms.
i do poi and staff spinning, supposidly poi can be very good for you, and with all the times i need to go running after my staff when i drop it that would help.

I agree to not weigh more than once a week. You don't want to get obsessive about it. And don't look for more than 1-2 lbs. loss per week. That is what is healthy and sure.

YES! I achieved my goal for today - run one whole mile without stopping to walk or slow down, and i did it! A 12 minute mile....pathetic for some of you, but great for me! I ate pretty great, too, yogurt and fruit for breakfast, Subway for lunch - (whole wheat bread, just about every veggie they have, grilled chicken and some honey mustard.) and i'm about to make a (restrained) taco salad for din~din!

and taking Ms.Ktty's advice, there are eleven weeks until katsucon, so my REALISTIC goal is to lose 11lbs by then. if i lose more, great, but 11lbs is what i'd like to see!

also, a tip i picked up from one of the articles someone posted and would like to share - Lift weights BEFORE doing your cardio! Weight lifting likes to pull energy from what you've eaten recently, whereas cardio likes to burn your fat stores. So life weights first, pull energy from your meals that day, and then burn off your fat stores with cardio!

Week 1 was hard for me, guys, I am really sad that I don't look super great yet; (unrealistic, i know), but Week 2 is much better! Now I just can't wait for Week 4, Week 6, Week 11!

Thank you all SO MUCH for the support you share, keep up the AWESOME WORK!

I suck at running, so congrats! =D

Something that might be music to your ears... You burn more if you jog/run a few minutes, then walk, the jog/run again and keep switching. That way you "get a break" and your body has to work to build the momentum back up and slow down again.

I like your advice about weight lifting and cardio, d1g1tini. =)

oh i didnt "skip" breakfast, i lost breakfast!! like i said, i woke up 9 minutes before i had to be at work, so i chose to try and be on time and keep my job instead of eat breakfast lol but believe me i know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day! thanks for saying this though cuz i know some people think that stopping eating will help them lose weight and they need to know that it only hurts you!

so today was the first day i didnt cheat!!!!! yyaaaayyyy!!!

for breakfast i ate special K. and then lunch was the usual turkey loaded with veggies. and then i ate some more almonds for a snack. and then i ate the leftover low mein (a small bowl). and then later i ate a banana with peanut butter.

and i finally ran today!!! grant it that i could only go for 9 minutes around the block...but i expect it will get better once i do it more, considering this is the first time i have ran in a year XD in addition to running, i also did 40 crunches, ran the stairs, and used this exercise machine we have that i dont know how to explain...but yay i finally am living up to what i wanted to do!! i also got some inspiration cuz i watched the victorias secret fashion show on the telly and got reeaalllly motivated to get rid of my gut thighs and hips! i obviously wont ever have their body, but i can work as hard as i can to have the best body i can!!

www.glamour.com - don't laugh! their 'body by glamour' program is free, and has built in features like an exercise log, food diary, recipes, calorie counters, etc. and they give you a new workout and new tips every week - oh MAN. the week 1 workout is AWESOME but intense! my weak legs are shaking. ^_^

i still have yet to do my cardio tonight, waiting for mister farmboy! but soon, i shall. 11 weeks until katsu!!!

www.sparkpeople.com is also free and I know I have an account there. =) I don't use it daily, though, as I sort of have it in my head to read labels, count calories, and know how much I burn in most of my activities. It's a nice site, though.

wanna good rule to lose weight?

stop making excuses for yourself. The more you say gets in the way, the more you're just avoiding it. Just do it. You can always find time. Wake up earlier and exercise. You don't have to go to a gym. I do all my stuff at home.

there is no possible way to target one area and only lose fat there. It drops off all over. You can TONE certain places though.

If you can stop eating fast food and drinking pop for like 3 months, when you try and drink pop, it will burn. Oh holy hell does it burn. Eating fast food . . . I don't recommend it unless you feel like sitting on the toilet for a while. Fast food is really bad for you. Hands down. It's not supposed to go into the body. It should make you sick. Taco Bell is like grade 3 food I think. That's considered lower than what a dog eats.

Okay, I have to comment on that one dude talking about fish oil. You need to get Pharmaceutical grade fish oil. The k-mart and general store brands aren't properly filtered. Most fish have tons of mercury in them due to pollution, etc. The Pharmaceutical grade Fish oil or Omega-3 caplets put forth the extra effort to filter out the bad stuff. Omega-3 = better memory, and the fish oil is oil that helps your bowels and your natural oils.

I too need to tone up :-( I suffer that damn lazy computer and gamer freak belly and love handle fat gainage! If only star trek's holo-suites were real already! You could ninja fight for 30 minutes a day and you'd be as bad as chuck norris by friday!

Although Im losing weight/inches im not really 'toning' anything. Ive been doing the stationary bike....but any better ideas for actual toning?

Ooookay I had a bad day today :/ I still worked out, I did a 15 minute warmup on the stationary bike and I ran 1.5 miles, but that's only like half my normal workout and I didn't do my weights >_< I'm feeling totally out of sorts for some reason today, blah.

PLUS, tomorrow at work is "Housekeeping Appreciation Day", which means there will be all sorts of bagels and doughnuts and cookies and cupcakes and brownies. Plz someone lend me their willpower so I don't eat any of it :P

Exercises (http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Six-Pack-Abs)
-That site has really good workouts, even if you're not looking for a six-pack, it's still really good for working on the stomach area, I've noticed a difference myself using their techniques.

Umm, sit-ups and crunches target that area best too. The stomach area, as I've found, is the toughest place to work on :sulk:

Hopefully that helps you some ^__^ I could probably come up with more suggestions, just let me know.

Hio. I plan to be batman beyond, but I wanna work on my gut, I have some ideas for working out, but is there any others ways on working with my gut? I wanna try and get some muscle. XD

bah ha haaaaaaaaa.

ROWERS:
do them. learn them. love them. lay down on the floor and make yourself completely straight arms straight above your head and legs straight. you should be like a pencil on the floor. bring your knees in and lift your shoulders off the ground. With your fingertips, touch your ankles. Do 20.

PLANK:
get into a push up position but instead of on your hands, position yourself on your forearms. Get into a push up position from there and stay there for a minute.

LEG LIFTS:
hold onto something with your arms. If you have someone with you, hold onto the heels of their feet. Put your legs straight in the air and put them as close to the ground as you can then lift them back up. If you want to get your obliques then put your legs down at an angle instead of straight down. \ | / are the directions you go in. Do 10 in each direction. Go down, the left, down, right, down (1) left, down, right, down (2) etc, etc.

PYRAMID
If you can honestly do 35 your first try on this . . . I don't even know what I'll do. ANYWAYS! Start with whichever your prefer. I start with the rowers. Do 35, flip over, do 35 push ups. Flip back over. Do 30 rowers, flip over, do 30 push ups. Do this until you get down to 5 rowers and 5 push ups. I marched drum corps and this was by far the hardest thing we ever did in conditioning.

THE 16
I call it the 16 because I do 16. You can really do any number you want to. Start laying on your back feet flat on the ground and do 16 crunches, bring your feet into a bent position like you would doing a sit up or normal crunch, do 16 crunches. Open your legs (I know that sounds weird) and do 16 crunches (your legs should still be bent). Extend your legs out (they should still be spread) and do 16 crunches. Put your feet together straight up and do 16 crunches. Bend your feet in the air at a 90 degree angle, do 16 crunches. Set your feet on the ground like a normal crunch and do 16 crunches. Feet flat on the ground, do 16 crunches. You're now done.

These were a few things we did in drum and bugle corps for conditioning. Have fun.

Btw. To let all of you know. It's not possible to have a 6 pack unless your body fat percentage is 10 or less.

I'd say I now ride the line between 'overweight' and 'getting into shape' lol. I've always been overweight, but I cut back a lot and am now just looking to slim down my stomach. I feel wierd lol... my arms are skinny, my legs are nicely-sized, my hips are wide but I blame genetics, my chest has slimmed down a lot, my face is even slimming down... and yet my stomach has this paunch that just refuses to go away.

My goal is to be able to wear an upcoming Haseo costume I plan to create. Haseo version 1.0 lol... a.k.a. Haseo the Belly Dancer costume >.>;; I can't decide on when to wear it, or even when to begin it, until I slim down enough where wearing it won't be an embarrassment. That means *no* pudge. It's always been my goal in life to slim down to the point where I'm just thin... I don't want to be this muscly buff guy because I don't personally find that attractive.

Anywho, I'm going to scour this thread to see about any tips =p I have my motivation... I try to get in some time each day exercising (I've been busy lately), but once things settle down I can really start kicking up a routine. I honestly cannot wait for the day when I can go ahead and wear a midriff costume (i.e. Haseo, Shuichi Shindou) and be proud to show off my stomach.

Glad to hear about so many people who are working hard on themselves... knowing there are others of every shape and size out there trying makes me feel better :)

This morning I hauled out the huge anthology of horror stories I've been reading and took it onto the treadmill with me. That's the first time I've been on the treadmill in MONTHS, and it was pretty exhausting, but I felt good afterwards.

Now I just have to try and convince my parents to let me put a television in front of the stationary bike so I can play video games while I work out...

It's progress, anyway.

lol I did, after I posted... I only read the first couple of pages before posting :3 I did find it ironic that the last few posts before mine were about stomach-loss. They were quite helpful... I tried out the 'rowers' exercise; I'll be doing them as often as I can now :)

A friend also gave me the tip that DDR would be a fun way to lose weight... I've played it before and it was pretty fun. I love dancing, but I'm not good at restricted dancing like that XD But since I'm only looking for weight-loss in the stomach, rather than building muscle, a lot of cardio is exactly what I want to focus on, yeah?

I followed this thing called "The South Beach Diet" and so far, by staying committed, Is working. For exercise for getting in shapeI got tips.

the weight around the middle I go running, swimming, and kick boxing are sure fire ways of toning that midsection in no time! It is not all well and good doing crunches but you need to burn off the layer of fat covering your muscles, cardio is the optimum fat burning tool, while light weight training kept muscles tight and toned! <RAWR>

For the pear shapes out there who gain weight around the tops of your legs and butt, cardio is ideal but in a much lighter form. Running should be done on flat roads or grass, up hill will build the quads and calves.

Skipping is an all rounder! tones the legs, stomach and arms while improving posture. plus it burns just as much calories per hour than running!

Great thread, I am trying to get a head-start on preparing myself for Otakon in Aug, going as Tidus which means I better have the pecs! lol.

Going to start drinking protein and hitting the gym next week, I will probably need lots of motivation with this cold weather going on, it was easy during summer when beach is just around the corner...

Okay, quick thing. I know someone else already said it, but I'll reiterate for good measure.

You cannot target one area of your body. When you burn fat, you simultaneously burn it EVERYWHERE. What causes you to lose weight is the burning of energy by cardiovascular exercise. It uses the energy that's in your system already. When that energy is gone, it begins breaking down the fat for energy. That's what fat is- energy being stored away for later use.

A good way to get going is to drink water RIGHT after you wake up and do your exercising then. You'll have burned most of your energy sleeping so it'll break down the fat quicker.

But so far, it's refreshing to see people DOING something. I have horrible will power, but I'm lucky in that I'm pretty skinny and pretty built.

HEY GUYS!

Sooo, how's everyone done this week? I worked out Mon-Thurs, took friday off, and just now got back from the gym today! FIVE DAYS! THAT WAS MY GOAL! aaaaaaaaand i ran over 10 miles this week! i really already am noticing a huge difference, and even better, people close to me are too! it's awesome.

so last week i asked about grocery lists, this week what's on my mind is...

PLAYLISTS!

So what DO nerdy cosplay nerds listen to when they work out? i figured i'd put down some of my favorites, here: (in bold are my favorites :D)

NARUTO - Fighting Dreamers!
Prince - Party Man (Batman soundtrack)
50 Cent - Magic Stick
Prozzac - Pretty Girls Make Me Nervous
Eric Prydz - Call on Me
Tenchi Soundtrack - Pioneers! (the fast awesome version)
Utena soundtrack - Take My Revolution
HIM - Wicked Game
Mulan Soundtrack - I'll Make a Man Out of You!
Jack off Jill - I Touch Myself
A-Ha - Take on Me
Christina Aguilera - Candyman
just about anything by AQUA
Eiffel 65 - Playstation

more, i'm sure, but that's my start.

so what about you guys?!

PS - I rewarded myself last night for a week of dieting with a slice of pizza and a small eggnog latte. HOLY CRAP. it was sooo good, AND! i was full for HOURS. after a week of mostly protein and veggies, a good serving of carbs and dairy certainly stick it to you!

<3

LOVE YOU GUYS. keep up the good work!

PPS - Penny - I read mostly horror, too. but i get pretty caught up in it, and i tend to work out alone, at 10:00 at night, at an apartment complex gym that really anyone could break into. i'm sure i'd give myself an aneurysm if i read horror on that treadmill.

bah ha haaaaaaaaa.

ROWERS:
do them. learn them. love them. lay down on the floor and make yourself completely straight arms straight above your head and legs straight. you should be like a pencil on the floor. bring your knees in and lift your shoulders off the ground.

It's not possible to have a 6 pack unless your body fat percentage is 10 or less.

um, thank you , but I`m being serious and I`m not planning on getting a six pack, I just wanna work on my muscles. I don`t know why you all immediately think that. o.o
But i`ll keep these in mind and will try to do a few a day.

let's all try and keep in mind that we have different goals, and different bodies! we all come from different fitness backgrounds, and we all deserve a big thumbs up for just BEING here. even if there are some of us who don't jump start a healthier lifestyle right away, by being here we're at least learning.

i ate....not great this weekend. not bad! that's for sure! but not GREAT. but i'm staying in the game!

Eeeh, I'd like to join in too ;_; After reading 11 pages of motivating posts, I think I might be able to achieve my goals!

I'm 16 and roughly 100lbs on 5'0''.

Well, I used to be around 110lbs last year and before that, I was really skinny (around 75-80lbs) I used to go play tennis a lot but the summer before last I stopped and gained flabbies in no time. ;____;

I decided to tone up now, since I've lost a lot of flab lately (I'm so proud!)

GOOD
- I stopped eating sweet stuff every day long ago (I really cut down on that. I barely eat anything sweet nowadays; HALLOWEEN WAS A BIG EXCEPTION!)
- I drink loads of water! (Few days ago, I stopped drinking sweet stuff ^^)
- I drink least 8 cups of unsweetened tea a day (mostly green tea, fruits tea or black tea)
- I (forced myself to) hatehatehatehatehate junk food (as in McDonalds and all that stuff) and now I can't really eat it anymore. Makes me sick!
- I love veggies, fruits and healthy stuff (well, at least I started to love them after gaining so much weight ;; )

BAD
- I can barely EVER get myself to exercise. I mean I can plan and think about doing it all the way but whenever the time comes I'm just like "Bleh...later."
- I am sososo lazy. The computer rules my world ;__; I drool over cosplays, chat or watch anime all frickin' day.
- I can sleep the whole day and I stay up until very late (on non-school days and vacation)
- I have massive thighs! They used to be really skinny (STICK-LIKE. I can't believe I have such big thighs now...T___T)

GOALS
- Stop being in front of the computer so much ;∆; I don't know how to get rid of that addiction! HELP NAO!
- Shape up my thighs, abs and arms.
- Get up early in the morning (on non-school days) I REALLY DONT KNOW HOW PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO DO THAT. I love to sleep, but I love having a lot of free-time more. Suggestions?

COSPLAYS
- All of my future cosplays will be either slightly skimpy or boys. And I don't wanna look stupid and flabby in them because I have a lot of photoshoots planned.

I love how everyone motivates everyone in here~
Good luck to y'all! WE CAN DO IT! ^____^

For the sleep thing Toastbrot, set your alarm for 6am every day, and place it on the OTHER side of your room so you have to get up to turn it off, if that doesn't work, place some things for you to trip over as you go and turn it off, i find that wakes me up. And after awhile you get used to waking up early. Now unless I'm up real late on the weekends, I naturally get up at around 7-8am (I set my alarm during the weekdays for 6am)

@Prota-girl: I never said you wanted a six pack. All I know is it was mentioned earlier and people think it's easy to get. You seriously can't have one unless that's your body fat percentage.

Measurements~

12/1/07
32" waist
11.5" bicep
24" thigh
40" hips
40" bust . . . . stupid boobs

12/9/07
31.5" waist
11" bicep
24" thigh
40" hips
37" bust . . . . wtf happened here? lol

Anyways! Thought I would post progress XD 1 inch so far in the places I measured. I know my "love handles" are a lot smaller. I also had to return a pair of pants today. I bought them the other day and I normally grab large . . . . they were WAY to big. I had to get a small. . . . >.>

ALSO! I'm doing turbo jam. I totally recommend that.

soo...i wasnt too good this weekend. like d1g1tini said, not bad but not great...

mainly i just need to get over the fact that i think i can cheat on the weekends simply because is the weekend!

but i did well on friday: chicken salad and strawberries and water pluuus ice skating!!! which was hysterical cuz i think i was the only one out there trying to get some cardio done lol i was sweating and feeling the burn it was great!! but then at like 11:30 we went to sonic and i had hot poppers and i dont think those are healthy (deep fried??) and then saturday i sat on my big lazy bohiney and watched movies and snacked all day long. today started out ok: cereal, carrots, celery, broccoli, chicken salad sammich...but then i had curly fries and a king size reeses :(

as far as any exercise-nada

--BUT--
my dad just handed me a book on yoga! and i started reading it...plethora of knowledge! i looove it and i have decided to try it out! it has such wonderful ideas about health and the body etc...
example: water is very very very important. it is a proven fact that a person can live off of very very little food as long as he drinks a ton of water! it is a vitality of life that cleanses us. not only drinkng, but washing too (lol) i mean think about it, dont you feel 100% better after a good shower?

it sounds crazy but if you think about it, it makes sense! so lately i have cut back on other drinks and tried to drink more water, but now i am going to try and go -water only- it should be easy since i wont be going cold turkey...

and as far as exercise, i think i will just add yoga to my life, not replace working out with it. soon i will find a routine that works for me! in the mean time, ill just keep trying!!!

Hey all---

Well, I was hella bad last week ><. I'm glad to see other people were not as bad as me! I ate McDonald's for dinner once during the week (chicken nuggets, I love them), and then I had French fries for breakfast on Saturday because I was mega-hungover. (I'm not an alcoholic, although it probably looks like it, haha.) BAD ME. Doesn't help that I had a mega-bad period and a slight cold last week...meaning I did very minimal exercise at home. Yuck.

Well, that's the bad. The good is, I have been eating a lot better...drinking only water/green tea & sometimes milk or coffee (oh and sometimes wine XD), I've been eating tons of veggies (especially carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, and red & yellow peppers), lean meats, and fruit, and I have done good exercise today! Now that the cramps are gone and I'm only feeling slightly sick, I'm just exercising and hoping it goes away. I'm also using Body By Glamour's strength training and it is AWESOME. It whooped my butt today, which is great. I don't like using the weights at the gym because they're right in front of the treadmills and everyone on the treadmills can watch my ineptitude XD. Plus, the BBG ones are really direct and concise and still rock. After this I'm gonna walk to the gym and do about 30 minutes of cardio before I come home to get ready for class.

Oh, and I'm a Neanderthal and am struggling with my iPod, but as far as good workout songs go, Britney Spears' Gimme More is really, really great. It's a good beat for doing reps, and I hate myself for saying it but it's really catchy. Someone also made a really awesome WoW amv to it: Note how the human male dance matches perfectly. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=2Wh0-d9ghQw)

Yeesh, I always type too much. Thanks for the people who said I should only weigh myself once a week; you're smart, I WOULD probably get discouraged if it didn't change fast enough XD.

Off to the gym! Work out today, everyone! If I can do it, anyone can do it (my tagline, lol)!

iluvmycat9 - what squiggle says is correct, DO NOT stop eating/eat very little. It will DESTROY your metabolism. The easiest way burn fat is to raise your metabolism by eating more (smaller meals more frequently) with excersise. The best way that I find to explain metabolism is it is like a campfire.

If you add very few small twigs, to the fire it will burn very low and very slow. (Eating very little)

Now if you add huge logs once or twice to the fire every so often (skipping breakfast and eating lunch or dinner), it will smother the fire .

However if you add small twigs and branches to the fire every hour or so it will grow bigger and bigger (eating small meals more times per day).

*cries in a corner*

Tini... I've been bad ;_;

Yeah... I have been uberly stressed about all sorts of things lately (that lovely time of year with finals and all) and so I haven't gotten to do ANYthing.

Fortunately, I'm done next week. I'm going to put in my schedule at work and then start doing something more. Meaning, since I can, I'll probably be trying to at least DDR for a bit every day (between sewing massive amounts of cosplay x.x)

I need to start doing crunches, I think. And putting stickies all over my room.

After finals I will be all set x3 But I've also been trying to cut back on all sorts of food... though the immense levels of stress have not been helping whatsoever. I *am* probably going to a Weight Watchers meeting for my Health class today, though... so maybe I'll check that out more o.O

Heh, shinjuchan. I feel your pain oooh how I feel it. Finals are totally stressing me out (and my skin is breaking out like crrrazy) I'm having mental breakdowns but I try to keep my eating steady and healthy...
How do y'all cope with the stress? Does yoga help? Meditation? ANYTHING?! ;___;

@Ender_06

Gaah, sounds like a good idea. I'll try that next weekend (I always get up around 6am in the morning on weekdays anyways) Watch me fail! ;; Btw, your metabolism campfire explanation is interesting...never thought of it that way. Makes sense!

sakurachan61123

@shinjuchan: do the ab workout I posted. It's tons of fun and you'll build a strong core.

@wyldbratling: I did drum and bugle corps and I lost an entire cup size. I went down to a D from a DD and now I'm back to DD. I want the stupid things to

go

away.

@toastbrot: find something fun to do. Take out some time for yourself. If you don't relax and do something other than worry about finals, of course you're gonna stress and break out.

They're annoying. All they do is bounce. And make idiot men stare at me. ANYWAYS! My butt actually got bigger. I was totally checking myself out the other day. Normally . . . my butt does NOT exist. And it was suddenly there. I almost wanted to cry. I don't want one.

I'm just super excited that I'm losing my love handles. I played DDR on Saturday night (all by myself -sad-) and pretty much beat the hell out of my body. I didn't rest between rounds and I was doing 8s, 9s, and 10s the whole time. Or non-stops. THAT was fun >.> I did an 8 my first song I think it was Do You Remember Me which isn't an easy 8 in the beginning and end and then the next song I got freaking Paranoia Survivor. I was like wtf T-T and I failed right at the end. Stupid stamina.

AND IN OTHER NEWS! Squiggle is right about not cutting out food. You should actually be adding MORE food into your diet. Eating more frequently in smaller portions will boost your metabolism and burn things faster. Water helps with that process. I can't figure out how much I need to drink anymore because I used to drink 3 gallons of water a day and yeah . . . now I can't seem to keep my body hydrated no matter how much I drink. Freaking weird.

shinjuchan!! honey baby! you're doing great, just by being here and learning. gods know i've been learning about healthy diet and exercise for YEARS and this is the first time i've ever been REALLY successful with it. keep up the good work, if you need to wait until finals to start up, then do that! just stick to it! :D we should catch up at Ota08 and show off our new hot bods!

sakurachan: so, don't know if this is my place to say at all. but. butt is good! butt is sexy and feminine and helps fill out your jeans. i myself am cursed with TOO much butt, but i'd never want it to go away entirely! i guess it's a matter of personal preference, which you are totally entitled to, but if women didn't want sexy muscled butts, stairmaster would have gone out of business and they wouldn't sell padded jeans :D a+ on losing the love handles, though! my muffin tops are rapidly on their way out out OUT!

and thanks for the water info, everyone! now i know for sure i'm not drinking enough!

also, bunnymachine and i are signing up for the race for the cure this year - our goal is 3 miles in 30 minutes! so that's a good, non-cosplay related goal. and i'm excited because it's right before summer con season, so if we're in shape for that, i'll be in shape to wear yellow vinyl booty shorts. :D

Alright my turn! I'm really glad I found this thread, I was just talking to my wife about how i wanted to tone up for Katsucon! You guys are here just in time! I used to go to the gym pretty hardcore and therefore lost fat and gained muscle. One problem.. Cardio and I broke up a long time ago. My track days of middle school are over. So with that in mind I was bulking up and was started to develop definition but I was also gaining muscle under fat. I want to get rid of my love handles and work on my stomach. I know that if I want my gut to work I HAVE to do cardio. I've learned alot about losing weight, vitamin intake, and supplement intake so I can lend some advice to people planning on losing weight or bulking up. A really good site you guys can check out which is all forums in sherdog.com. They have alot of good advice. (Just putting that out there)

My weaknesses:
I stay up late and sleep in. Therefor going straight to work till late and missing my workout time =(

Fast food, it's extremly cheap and quick.

LAZY, If a video game comes out, I'll crush that puppy.

MOTIVATION!!! I had it for a good 7 months but when going by yourself it's difficult! ( Gotta gym membership but i can't keep letting money go away!)

My Goals:
By Katsucon try to put on 5 - 10lbs of muscle (wishfull thinking with that 10) and work on my midsection. I'm going to be joining a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class this week which is going to seriously help my cardio. Just gives me more of a chance to work out. People will be there to help motivate and I'm not going to want to wrestle guys with Mcdonald's in my tummy! It'll definitly help me eat clean! I would love to get back on my Kashi diet!

I'm starting tomorrow so I'm hoping with checking back with this thread that It'll help keep me motivated!

d1g1tini
12-11-2007, 06:31 PM
hey scourage!!! i know one thing that keeps me motivated is (BEAR WITH ME I'M NOT A CREEP) is seeing people who have DONE it. lots of people are born with nice bodies, the real motivation is seeing people who have done it the au-natural way, that is to say, hard effing work. :D good to hear you'll be at katsu as well, got any costumes planned?

ps- i so did not want to work out today. at all. at the beginning of my week 3 of diet and exercise, i felt sluggish and depressed, like nothing was changing. i trudged over to the gym and -

LEARNED I'VE ACTUALLY STARTED LOSING WEIGHT!!

though this might seem a-duh to some of you, while i have a great metabolism in the sense that it takes me a long time to put ON weight, and i'm naturally fairly slender, it just....doesn't...work the other way. my body doesn't want to BURN fat, and beLIEVE me i have fat to burn! i've tried doing things the half-butt way and it JUST doesn't work, i don't lose ANY weight so for me to have the little scale weight tip before i was ready....OH man. that gave me all the motivation i needed! that and Avenged Sevenfold's ''The Beast and the Harlot." talk about PUMPED.

do any of you wonder when you're dieting and exercising that maybe you're not eating ENOUGH? i've always had a really VERY healthy appetite, and now i'm eating normally and i feel great! the exercise has really kept my appetite in check, but somewhere in my brain i'm like 'shouldn't i be craving carbs? shouldn't i be starving right now? i'm not snacking constantly, i'm not eating doritos or milkshakes or cheeseburgers....' today i had healthy cereal and skim milk for breakfast, veggies and some low-fat popcorn for a snack, and a big spinach and chicken salad for lunch. i guess that is normal, huh. writing it out it seems like more than it was.

I KNOW I KNOW ALREADY TL;DR!!!

^_____^

Sakura! I'm doing the workouty thing tonight. For the pyramid.. *dies* But I can at least make some sort of dent in the other sort of exercises. And when I get up tomorrow (and hopefully Thursday and Friday as well) I'll be DDR-ing, since I don't have class, and can get as rank and spend as much time doing it as I want (I think).

Good? :x I also put down Pop-tarts today instead of having them. And had an orange. And had chicken caesar stuffs for lunch and dinner.. and yogurt and cereal for breakfast<3 It was uber-yummy.

@tini: yeah, it's really weird, I'm not craving fatty stuff anymore! Like, maybe once a week I'm like "if I don't eat cheese I will KILL A BITCH" but, like magic, I'm just not eating potatoes anymore :O. I have no idea why this is happening. Maybe the Diet Gods are on our side, finally.

Uhm so, in some mega-victory news, I bought a cute dress from the junior's section at Kohl's yesterday! NEVER MIND that it is a size 13 (don't laugh!)...I usually wear between a 10-12 in women's, and a Large in Junior's shirts/skirts, but for some unknown reason I could not fit into Junior's dresses, which depressed me. I was always just a smidge too chubby. WELL, NO MOAR! And it's not like it's skintight or I have to struggle with it...I fit really comfortably in this dress, and it seems like soon it may even be too *gasp* BIG, so I'll have to alter it. So this is a total victory for me.

Off to do the magical BBG exercises. No time for gym today because I'm meeting up with my mom for shopping & then I have a TON OF HOMEWORK to do before tomorrow. I'm still doing something, though, so word.

Yay for toning up for Katsucon! We can doooo it :D.

So I went back to the gym today before work. Kept the lifting light so I wouldnt be hurting the next day! I did jump rope and boxing for cardio. Let me tell you my body got right back into it. While I was at work I felt good and awake the whole day! You know how there are days where even if you got enough sleep you're still sleepy? Well I felt the way I did before and let me tell you I've missed it!

I had a protein shake when I woke up followed by some cereal with soymilk and OJ. At work had a seafood salad with wheat bread and had kashi crackers with lowfat cheese when i got home. Rememeber! Eat less at a time but more frequent. If you can (I know its hard with work and all) Try to eat every 2 or at the most 3 hours!

I had a sweet idea guys! I don't know if it was posted before but for us who are going to Katsucon, why don't we meet up and get something to eat?! I think it's a fantastic idea. We could either use our cheet day and get pizza HAHA or go out for a regular meal! Anything would be great. Any takers??

I wanna go to Katsucon ;_;... if I can find a place to stay then I'll probably be going for at least one day. I won't have any of my sexy cos's for then, though...

I wanna go :bigcry: I've been doing crunches and DDR for the past few days and I've been feeling skinnier, even if I'm not physically any different. I've also been eating much healthier (no chocolate since Monday o.o)

Keep going everyone ^o^

@eternal star:

Yeah, I have cheese issues from time to time. More than any kind of sweet, cheese is my personal fat demon. I must appease it with sacrifice. Also, BBG is short for "Body by Glamour". If you go to Glamour magazine's website, you can sign up for it, and it gives you some pretty great exercises to do at home, and you can log workouts and get meal plans and such. I do my cardio at the gym, but I do the BBG strength training workouts at home. They win.

@Katsu buddies: Uh yes, I am in for a meal! I am always for beer...I almost never eat that much at cons, though, but I think I can manage a tasty meal with the other winnars from this thread ;3.

Today I did BBG, but soon I have a whole bunch of stupid class (finals, makeup work, etc), but around 7 I'm gonna go swimming at the gym & sit in the steam room. I'm getting mega sick, and I think that will help :3.

I've been really bad lately...;__;

I ate a lot of sweets (a lot for my conditions anyways) and a whole bunch of christmas cookies. And I felt my abs literally expand (in the bad way)

*ashamed*

My goal for next week is to first, get through all the finals without any stress and eat healthy while doing so! I also want to start my exercise plan and try the Power Yoga DVD I bought a while ago...

Ooh, how I crave for something greasy...

Remember that if you completely stop eating your favorite foods that you are going to break down and just go nuts. what you need to do is find out how long you can go without that happening. You need to have a cheat day where you eat something you love.(DONT GO NUTS THOUGH!) I used to cheat once a week, I picked wednesday because i didn't work (OH retail). I've decided to slow that down further because I want more results. Yes of course this will slow you down but not enough to really make a difference. Nowevery two weeks i'll eat mcdonalds or something. Your body is going to crave sweets and grease, so indulge in food you want just keep it in moderation!

Oh and for katsucon I'm totally up for beer and pizza. OOORRR Chipotle pizza?!?! Make our own toppings!

This is really good for me since I don't care about losing weight but I love to tone up!! My biggest problems are that I love ice cream (Ben 'n Jerry's ), chocolate, crisps and all other bad things in live XD. Something I can live without them for days but then I get a craving for food and then I can't stop myself from eating everything that I seeXD. But I do sport quite a lot. I swim 3 times a week (competion so I REALLY have to work hard). And I do DDR two or three times a week.
I want to start walking every day(before i go to school) but I get shy very soon. It's like I don't want people to see me walking and like when there is a huge group of people standing somewhere I'll go in a huge circle instead of going straight ahead... (I know my self-esteem is really low XD)
But I just want to say that I love this thread!^^

so I'm totally glad to hear that some of you are actually doing my work out thing~ As for the pyramids, I'm just telling you now that drum corps can barely do that s**t. We practically sprint around a field for about 6-12 hours a day and can't do that set. It's really hard. If you can actually improve on that, you
re doing super well. I could only do 25 and down. Like I said. If someone can do 35 and down. . . . you;ll be my hero.

OH! Someone wanna race me to it???? Races are good motivators. Kinda like races in DDR. Lol. I have so many challenges to complete on that game this weekend. Stupid people and challenges. But no seriously. Someone should race me.

As for feeling skinnier, it's proven if you do sit up or ab exercises 30 minutes before wearing a bikini, your stomach will actually be smaller because your muscles have tensed up and are pulling at the fat and everything. So you are actually looking smaller. it's not just you shinji.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, and no, I don't feel like going through 11 pages to find out. There actually is a livejournal group that was started called cosplay_diets, thanks to a thread here...three years ago. o.o

http://community.livejournal.com/cosplay_diets/profile

Instead of starting a new one, why not just jumpstart the old one? ^_^

chaosbutterfly : in the beginning of the thread, i did mention that i may like to take this to another forum, such as Livejournal, but we seem to have established a nice group here! thanks for the link, though, i may have to join that community!

so last night i got off my butt and MADE myself do cardio! it was about 11pm so i had no interest in going to the gym. i simply asked Whiny_farmboy "Do not laugh at me!" and proceeded to jump up and down, march in circles, hop, skip, and do little aerobics moves for 20 minutes while watching 'sex and the city' reruns. the point is, i got my heart rate up, got my leg muscles working, and broke a decent sweat! not as good as my 2mile runs, but still significant?

as for my other 10 minutes, i ended up playing DDR at the mall whilst waiting for my mommy's xmas present to be engraved. when i was done with a few games, i walked briskly enough to break a slight sweat back to the other end of the mall. (Don't know if any of you have ever been to Potomac Mills in VA, it's a pretty well-known mall, and it's a huge LINE. it takes about 10 minutes to walk from one end to the other.) I think on days where i can't bear to be on the treadmill or walk outside, I can go to the mall to walk and play DDR!

interesting tip i learned today : you can totally break up your 30 minutes of cardio into 10 minute spurts! so if you're too bored to play DDR/run/practice your Haruhi dance for 30 minutes straight, make sure you do it for at least 10!

today i'm going out for breakfast with my mom - which i'm excited about. i allow breakfast to be my biggest meal of the day, due to the fact that i will burn off most of what i eat. so i allow myself to have carby things, but still keep my fat levels in check.

have a great day everyone! check in over the weekend if you can!

Grrr... yesterday was kinda bad for me. I had lotsa sweet things and could not get motivated in the least. All sorts of strange things happened yesterday and I needed comfort ;_;

On another note, I already did about 45 minutes of DDR this morning and some of those crunch exercises that Sakurachan posted. I feel my tummy getting trimmer, even if it's all in my head. Maybe I'll do another 16 set before I go to work tonight.. which is going to be a pain -.-

Ne ne, have a good weekend everyone :3

Aaw! Everyone has times that they eat a lot of sweet things! (I had it two days ago and I was really mad at myself!) At least you need to try to eat less sweets. Maybe two cups of water first and then some sweets in stead of a lot of sweets! (I know it doesn't sound yummy but that's better than eating a lot and then feel very bad about it the next day.. Trust me I've had that feeeeling for way to many times!)
good luck with your exercises!

About eating too much sweets or what not, an example would be on wednesday our dining halls had a xmas dinner with a crap ton of insanely good food. And I went all out (I was on a diet to limit my carbs at the time). I said screw it because A. Its one day, B. They never have food that good anyways.

So I stuffed myself, and had cheesecake up the wazzu (OMG it was good!). But afterwards I wasn't guilty of it, and basked in the feeling of a stomach full of food and sweets (and subsequent stomach ache).

If you're gonna cheat, eat it enjoy it, and don't feel bad about it and regret it two hours later. Because if you do then what's the use of cheating in the first place?
Just go run for two hours the next day XD!

princessrikku28

Haha! That's right :P Yesterday I was playing DDR for a long time so I felt better ^^. But the problem is that I love running but I HATE when people watch. (I always have the feeling that people watch.. Maybe it's because of my low self-esteem...)
GRRR... I hate that I love food so much ;_;!

Ender_06

I don't mind people watching me run, but then again I usually don't think they are watching me anyways... I hate running on a track, (its too cold and icy to run outside right now) it feels like your a gerbil or something, that and you don't push youself to go that far. I ran over 7 miles one day because when you run outside you have to deal with running out to wherever you want, then you gotta run BACK. When I'm outside I'll run aways out but forget I have to get back home, then that doubles the amount I run for the day. (That day I wore a huge hole in my socks!)

princessrikku28
12-14-2007, 01:34 PM
Ouwie! Was it cold?:P Btw running to the place you go and back is double the exercise! I don't think I can run well in this poor weather conditions.. I was wearing a very thick coat today and going to school was already horrible for me... And my friends don't like running so I have to run all by myself.. ;_;

True! Just the same for anyone who's trying to bulk up. If you want to look bigger when you go out do your routine first. Ever notice how at the gym (or wherever you may workout at) after you do a set and look in the mirror you seem to be bigger? It's the same concept as Sakurachan said. Your muscles are reacting to the workout and flare up. SO, go out looking good lol.

So I've been eating VERY clean and plan do to that all the way to Katsucon. So I will so be looking foward to beer and pizza! I'm not going to have any cheat days till then. It's going to continue to be rough but it really does feel good. So, I dont care about indigestion after the pizza. (LAWL)

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORKZ!

bleh. Whenever I get stressed I go and play DDR . . . great outlet. Makes you focus on something else. But not when people freaking ditch you after you've had a terrible day two days in a row.

I got to see a girl die and then I get the feeling I'm gonna lose my job for things I don't feel are in my control.

So this weekend has been stupid on top of the fact that I ask for sundays off and never get them off and I had to close at 10 tonight and I have to open at 8 tomorrow. I'm not happy at all right now. lksdnglkhdslgkhsgh

I really like this thread cause unlike a lot of others it doesn't feel so...neglected. And I like the fact it was made for the purpose of supporting.

My goal is to lose the excess weight I gained over the past few months
and get in shape for the Metrocon anime human chess match tryouts.
The tryout dates are February 9 and 17. And for certain cosplays that
would require me feeling comfortable enough to show my tummy and a
lot of leg. ( But not too much =O )

My weaknesses

- Donuts!
- Pasta
- I'm just lazy and lack motivation
- And I'm also guilty of spending time i could be
working out looking at cosplays

Thanks to my current job (Disney World) I spend less time sitting
on my tushy and more actually being active which is a plus, but
isn't good enough. I try working out for at least an hour everyday
but i seriously lack the will. My boyfriend is supposed to be doing
this with me, but I think his motivation is worse than mine. Right
now My only motivation or the pictures of my 2008 cosplays
posted conveniently on mirror so I can have a constant reminder.

Yarr... another bad weekend x.x Maybe since I have 3 finals left (one's done) and 2 papers? And all due sometime between today and tomorrow.

When I go home tonight, I plan on doing a pyramid of probably 15 (maybe 20 if I feel ambitious), some DDR, a set of 16, a little more DDR, straight rowers, a bit more DDR, and then maybe another pyramid of 15. I took a shower this morning and don't want to take another one (*lazy*) so I don't want to get too gross, but I want to work out. I also have another Weight Watchers meeting tonight, so we'll see... x.x

GL on finals, to everyone that has them. Keep up the good work ;_;

Ahh how this makes me wish I had a functioning DDR mat!
I'm tempted to play DDR without the mat... just do the dances on the floor. xD

If I was old enough to drive, I'd go to my gym every day. Unfortunately I have to rely on my dad to drive me there, and our conflicting schedules means we virtually NEVER go.
I can't walk there as it's a 15 minute drive... imagine walking that far (then agagin..good excersize!)

Oh and of course, I lack the will-power to improve my eating habits. :)

So basically, I'm aware that I'm the cause for my lack of in shape-ness, I just haven't brought myself to start DOING something about it. xD

By the way, I positively love everything about this thread.

hi mollay and sorasmith! welcome!

okay, so after a weekend of teetering off the right track (think slivers of raspberry and lemon birthday cake, spanakopita, grilled cheese-and-tomato sandwiches, and big bowling alley mugs of Killian's...mm...beeeer) today i got back on.

man did i feel GROSS this morning. from not working out since friday (i DID get my 5 days of cardio in last week, so saturday and sunday were earned days off...) i wasn't even HUNGRY this morning. i picked at some pasta salad and peanuts at work but like. bleah! no metabolism, it felt like.

one of my clients at work (i'm a massage therapist) told me that sometimes after a few weeks of dieting, she'll lose a few pounds after what feels like an impossible pig-out. i guess the same thing happened to me today, as it was weigh-in for me, and i lost another pound! woohoo! that's 4 pounds in 3 weeks. for someone who previously felt like weight loss was IMPOSSIBLE for me, this feels so amazing. if i lose my 7 more lbs. before katsu, i'm having another pig out. a big fat WENDY'S CHEESEBURGER....MMMmmm. *drool*

but i've lost about an INCH AND A HALF off each of my thighs. my legs look SO different in the mirror! and my bootay! all my pants are saggings, i'll have to take them in! my black trousers for my alucard costume don't even stay up anymore. ^_^

i'm starting week 4, which is the week many people tell you that - if you've been consistent - you can start to see real results. and i am! this week is gonna be great!

As for me I decided that it would be a good idea to get sick apparently.. I went to work for a whole 39 minutes today before leaving... So for the last three days I havn't excersied. I've kept the eating in check though, I've been eating VERY good drinking alot of water. So I should be back up in no time!! Ahaha, why didn't I see this thread earlier? XD I'm going to cosplay some stomach-blaring six pack people, so I need to work on my abs and general body! XD

I'm about 135 lbs and 5'1 or 5'2 now. I want to get to lose to about 105-115. Most of my weight comes from muscle, which was accquired from year-round swimming, but since I've stopped, I've gained alot of weight, and I now have fat on top of my already big muscles. D: So, my plan is to eat healthier, and to start exercising again! : D

The good:
I don't eat junk food.

The baaaaaad:
I eat too much rice (alot of fat in rice D:)
I eat too quickly, so I don't realize when I'm full until after I've stopped eating, which results in me feeling really full afterwards.
Aside from 2 hours of fencing a week, I don't get any exercise.
I eat too little vegetables and fruits, and too much meat and rice.

My plan is to follow some diet changing plans (from the soompi forums), like this: http://www.soompi.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=175823&view=findpost&p=7554081

I will do this ab workout daily: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNqrkGnkUWc in addition to doing cardio for 60 minutes a day.

Do jumping jacks/running up and down stairs/walking/light jogging count as cardio?

Its a chep'o one nothing fancy and a little to loose I go flying off it, so i stuck a 2x4 under the back leg and hopped on for about 10 mins to just try it out and see how it feels last night. Today.... my love handles are sore! Dear gods I got a work out not even trying! I am guesing that they are sore because you have to lean forward a little and balance yourself to make the thing work... not sure.. either way.. woohoo for cheep'o tredmill.

thanks tini =)

It's great to hear how well you're doing.
It actually gives me more confidence
and i feel i can really do this.

Right now I'm just trying to figure out a good plan.
Like what exercises I should try and foods I should eat.
Right now I run for atleast 30 mins I do sit-ups and push-ups
(on all days except the days i work)

But it feels like there's more/other things I can do.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm in! I am around 5'4 and weigh around 125 I think. I'd like to tone up a bit by hopefully January. ^^

Weaknesses:
→ Chocolate, cookies, cake, ice cream..the whole lot. I have SUCH a sweet tooth. ;__;
→ Sleeping late..around 5AM nowadays..
→ Computer time! I seriously spend like...1/3 of my day online.

Goals:
→ To be able to run my high school 8-minute mile time. >___<
→ Lose at least 5 pounds by Febuary.
→ Do 100 sit ups a day!

Things I'm doing:
→ Drinking more water and green tea. ^^
→ Starting to work out by doing crunches and a few pilates.
→ Ice skating!

Sadly I've been eating a lot of sweets lately, with it being the holidays...it was just my boyfriend's birthday so we all had cake..and pizza...and coke ;___; /cries

BUT! I will keep trying and post regularly~!

Good luck everyone! ^-')b

ok this is getting old. i keep having to write the "i was bad" or "i cheated" post, and im getting tired of it!! why cant i just be good? why?? gaarrr its so frustrating because i KNOW i shouldnt eat three reeses at 2 in the morning (i mean really, who does that?) and i KNOW i shouldnt drink the mountain dew (even though i went about a week and a half with nothing but water yay) and i even KNOW i shouldnt eat two -large- helpings of what my dad cooks for dinner...BUT I DO ANYWAYS!!!!!

this thread has actually helped me a lot because for the first time in my life, i have actually felt bad when i do these things. but the problem is, i still do them. ITS ALL IN MY HEAD!!! i just saw on an infomercial about a guy who "hypnotizes" you so you will 1. actually stop eating when your stomach is full and be more satisfied 2. desire more healthy foods...now while i dont really feel confortable being hypnotized, i do need some help:

learning to stop when im full
not to be an "emotional eater"
stop eating so late
stop eating when im bored

and all of these are simply --in my head-- so how do i make this change? i mean i went a week with daily exercise and healthy eating but it was HELL trying to not eat sweets/salts when im under sooo much stress. which is kinda pathetic since i lOVE veggies and fruits, i just have no access to any (since i dont buy the groceries, and i have no money to spare to buy my own)

question: should i buy those pills that help women with "stress related abdominal fat"??? i am very skeptical when it comes to pills (i dont take any in fact, not even tylenol) but should i try these?

sorry for the defeatist attitude :(

Do jumping jacks/running up and down stairs/walking/light jogging count as cardio?

as long as you keep your target heart rate up for at LEAST 20 minutes, you're doing cardio. So if you're continuously moving, generally it's considered cardio.

Ah, I can't wait until I'm home and have access to a scale again. But on the downside, there's a lot more junk food at home, especially with Christmas coming up... here at college I've learned that the best way to keep myself from eating unhealthily is to not keep bad food in the room. I have one box of Triscuits for my midnight carb cravings, the rest is all fruit and other healthy snacks. I tend to mindlessly snack on chips and the like at home, but here, in order to get chips I'd have to walk four blocks in the freezing cold, and it's just not worth it.

I also discovered that I bloat like crazy! I was measuring myself for a costume and had a waist measurement an inch bigger than it normally was; after a few minutes of panicking and wondering how so many extra pounds had snuck on, I drank about five glasses of water... an hour later, I was back to normal. So for all of you who want a quick fix right before a con, drink lots of water and avoid salt and you'll probably look thinner.

Woo, so I decided next year I'm going to go to Disney's Food and Wine Festival with my mom and sis. I discovered they also have a 10K, the "Race for the Taste". A 10K is 6.2 miles. That's about 3 miles more than I've ever done comfortably but... I think I can do it. I better start training soon! Maybe then I'll be in better shape by the time Fanime comes! Only thing is it's been months since I've done any running, and even then it was only a mile :( How do I get my motivation back, especially when the weather's so crappy?

omfg I have good news that I totally didn't expect xD

From doing the ab exercises, trying to cut out certain foods, doing a bit of DDR, and sleeping properly, I somehow lost almost 3lbs in about 10 days =D

I told my parents what I'm up to with the whole losing weight thing and they're rather supportive about it. Since I'll be eating the groceries they buy for the next month (instead of just picking out fruits and veggies in the caf at school), I asked them to get specific veggies that I like and maybe less cookies and sweets. They're being rather compliant about it, so it's a way for the whole family to eat a bit healthier. So, for those of you young'uns that are still stuck at home (or are stuck at home like this for whatever reason) there's an idea =D

Keep up the good work guys =D I figure that if I don't gain any weight over the next week, I'll be all set. After all the food is gone, there's no more temptations =D

the bad news is, i've been sick all week so i haven't exercised since monday. but i'm not being too hard on myself, as my fellow Three of Cups ladies have also been sick recently, and we're all trying to give our bodies a bit of a rest. i know i'd at least like to be able to breathe without coughing or making Chu-Chu snot bubbles before i hit the 'mill again.

the good news is, maybe it's because i've only been eating soup all week, but even though i've been on the couch for like ten hours at a time, I FIT INTO MY THIEF PAINE COSTUME AGAIN! ULTIMATE NERDY VICTORY OVER FAT!

http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=616626 - there it is, and there's me how i looked last time i wore it. you know, i actually think i look even better in it now! still have lots of tone-up work to do, but i'm feeling great!

how about you?

I'd like some help/motivation. I don't know where to start though. I randomly gained 10-15 lbs during the spring, and just haven't been able to get it off. I try to do reverse crunches (30 each night) and I eat decently...any ideas?

do more than 30 crunches and possibly throw in some cardio. The abs can handle a lot of stress so 30 crunches really wont do much you have to do a lot more :( --- good luck tho~

meow meow...how many crunches do you recommend? I overdid it once by starting off doing 200 a day o.o. Then I quit. And I always hear about this 'cardio' but what are cardio workouts? Anything that gets your heart going? I know running does that but what else?

I'll join in on this since this seems like something for me. I'm 5'4" and am about 137lbs. I'm working towards toning up a bit before September and getting down to about 120lbs. But currently I haven't been doing so much since I've been home for the holidays. After having snacks for Christmas and lots of sweets for my birthday, I haven't really done anything. And to top that off, I've been sick for the past week as well ^^;

My weaknesses:
-Once I forget to do something, I usually tend to get out of the habit immediately and stop doing whatever I was doing
-Lazy, I tend to enjoy sitting at my computer looking up something not that important...like watching countless youtube videos of cosplay
-Coca Cola! Even though I usually like to buy the 100 calorie cans, I still end up drinking more than 3 a week
-School food. I'm very skeptical with my school's choice in food and meals that they offer, so I usually get the same thing for each meal; Lunch: pizza with milk; Dinner: mashed potatoes with pasta and milk.
-Lack of breakfast
-Chai, my biggest weakness of all!

What I Want To Achieve:
-Have a more toned stomach
-Tone my upper part of my legs
-Self discipline to not let a good habit die out after missing/forgetting it one day
-Lose 15 - 20lbs by September

What I'm Already Doing:
-Refuse to use the elevator and go up the stairs instead to get to my classes on higher floors
-Walk to my classes and to the little store outlet near my campus when I need to do a little shopping
-Limit myself to only one chai a week
-Not constantly snack all day long

In High School PE we used to do 100 crunches a day; 4 sets of 25. I find it's easier to do multiple sets of 25 with rests in between.

Hiryuu

That sounds good, thanks Devi. I actually started a new thing last night, came up with it on the fly

Take one energy pill
Play ddr for one hour
Do 25 20lb curls on each arm.
shower, bed

But I'll add in those crunches. What do you guys think so far? btw, I'm 5'4" and 130lbs

Hey Tinks!!

@ Hiryuu: Adding those crunches is an awesome idea.
I've realised how much good they can do. =)

@ tini - I hope you're feeling better <33

And good news!! After my first week. I've lost 3 pounds

o_o 'Ello. I'm 5'5" and currently 157lbs. I don't do sports and cant go to a gym or exersize outside my house. Strict Parents. I'd like to get down to around 125lbs by may Since I'm Planning on Cosplaying Kagome from Inuyasha and Launch form Dragon ball for Fanime. And They show abit of skin ya know. I DO have a Tredmill, Weights, Legmaster((or the Devil machina)), AND DDR! woo! I have the normal weight issues((thighs, tummy, upper arm, sides, ect.)) I've been dieting for two years now((though sticking to said diet gets hard around the holidays))

I know I CAN loose the weight since I went from 210lbs in 2002 to my 157lbs now. Though it seems crunches and an hour on ddr on light doesn't seem to do anything any more^^;

I've run out of ideas and motivation. And staring at the pics of Kagome and Launch are NOT helpingxD!!! -pokes huge thighs- >.<

i am glad there are many people thinking this, i want to lose weight so i can look similar to miyu from vampire princess miyu. I am 5'11 or 5'12 i forget but i last weighed myself at over 200 pounds and around here people called that fat

ok I'm 5'3 and overweight (closing in near 200, but being a lady I won't discuss my true weight). I want to get down to around 150-160 by Otakon. I bought a balance ball to try out *but I don't like the workout tape I got with it*and I'm going to start a gym routine since I'm a member of a local gym *which is hard right now because I live where it snows and my poor car doesn't like the cold (it's my curse for owning a sports car).

Any advise on someone who's just starting out? I've already quit the whole soda thing - went with water & Lipton white tea flavor packets and I've quit the white bread thing too. I've learned how to make a few more fish dishes (without butter) and also have been eating more vegetables.

So any hints on a beginner on what I can do at the gym to make working out fun and less tedious? I can do the treadmill thing, but I was thinking of trying the 30 min circuit training. Does anyone know, is it wrong to work out with as much weight as I can stand for a few reps, or light weight high reps, which is more effective? I want to loose weight around my butt, thighs and waist.

ZGoku296

Awww, and blackcat523 failed to mention our bet! It's not a serious one, more for fun, but the idea is simple...between her, myself, and another friend in South Carolina, let's see who can lose the most before Anime Boston. Personally, I've cut bread completely, I'm not a big fan of plain ole' white bread anyway, not a big red meat fan, either. I'd eat fish/seafood every day if I had the choice, but sadly, I'm the only one in the house who prefers it. So, even though I've been essentially banned from the kitchen, I still cook what I want to eat, often making enough for a few days at a time.

Soda...wow, I know this one's big, and I've tried...but I LOVE my Cokes! I just can't seem to totally cut soda out, I've switched to a spiced ginger unsweetened iced tea that I totally love, but I can't dump the sodas totally. Is this necessarily bad??

Exercise...Uh, I live in Florida...with the exception of maybe a month, the weather here is nice enough to go outside and ride a bike. And Santa gave me a REALLY nice bike two years ago, it's just a matter of getting my fat ass out there and riding the thing. I need to get back to riding every day, all day, there was a time when I would ride over 20 miles per day...and not even breathe heavily from it.

My problem is this...my work involves a LOT of walking and heavy lifting, so you would think toning would be a cinch...it's not...the usual suspect areas, too, butt, thighs, more than anything, baby fat that refuses to go away. Any ideas??

EDIT: I'm roughly 5' 3" to 5' 4", and stuck at 148.5 lbs...I can't seem to budge from there.

I don't really have much time to exercise properly and find that chocolate is irrisistable :< and with all the chocolate I got for xmas it makes it worse.

First off, HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!! I hope everyone's was amazing :D

Next, I'm sad to report that I have been very bad over the holidays >_< The last time I really worked out was Dec. 10th, and I've been eating a ton of high-fat, high-carb foods (plus tons of sugar and junk food XD ) I also had a combination of strep throat and a sinus infection in mid-Dec. that persisted for about two and a half weeks, which seriously threw me off my routine. The result is that I regained ALL of the four inches I had previously shed, boo!

SO. Now that the New Year has arrived, I've resolved to start eating well again (taking my own lunch to work and actually cooking healthy dinners :3), and including more veggies and whole grains into my diet. I'm also gonna pick up my exercise routine again (Mon, Wed, Fri, and Sat) with a timed mile every Monday.

How did everyone else fare over the holidays? I hope you did better than I did ^_^

Ok, so it's been over a month since I last posted here and... I'm a little confused.

I used to eat quite a bit of junk, have an iced cappuccino every day, get no exercise at all, and ate out a lot which basically meant little to no vegetables.

Now, a month later, I've cut back on junk food a lot, have an iced cappuccino maybe only 4 days a week, got an elliptical for christmas which equals 30mins workout a day since (plus I've been doing more physical activity now that I have a job), am taking my vitamins, and when I do eat out, it's only Subway or some other healthier alternative.

And I've GAINED WEIGHT. I feel like every day I'm turning into a bigger tub of lard and my cheesy thighs keep getting wobblier and dimplier. I've gained around 7 pounds, but my inches are relatively the same. I can definitely say I haven't lost anything. Except maybe some self-esteem and it wasn't very high to begin with.
(_ _'')

So here's the question: how do you guys stay positive when you just can't see the improvements? How do you not get depressed and binge or refuse to eat altogether?

I used to think I had an hour glass figure, but I really think I'm borderline pear-shaped. My hips know no bounds! D; Plus I have all these gross spider veins in my thighs and.. there's really nothing attractive about my lower half. How can you make your legs look sexy instead of like they came from a moldy cheese factory?

Lawilet: Your metabolism might have slowed, and you might be gaining too much muscle mass. I understand how you feel, it happened to me back in the spring and I thought about suicide. Seriously.

The way to stay positive is to always look for new ways to better yourself. Post on here, get some feedback, and you just feel this compulsion to keep going.

As far as your diet, try first taking B Complex (it's a vitamin) which will speed your metabolism. Try eating the big breakfast, medium lunch, and small dinner with two small snacks between. As far as the working out goes, your body might have adjusted to the thirty minutes on the elliptical, and you might need to go more now. I know I used to do 30 reverse crunches and it would kill me, but now I have to do 100 to feel a slight burn. I know the hips problem, definitely. Try squats if you can (you can do them while you're just standing around) or try DDR.

Thanks so much for the advice, Hiryuu. ; ; I never realized there was a vitamin that actually increases metabolism. I have hypothyroidism, ie: the condition that makes everything in your body go wrong, so I usually blame it for all my problems. xD

I am noticing a difference already from using the elliptical. The first time I used it I nearly died trying to reach 10 mins. Now I can go for 30 mins ok, though it's still a big workout for me. That's quite an improvement in only a week, I would think. :3 There's a tension setting on it as well that I can increase when it's getting too easy. I had mentioned in an earlier post of mine that I used to get heart palpitations and chest pain, but I haven't had any in a month (though that may also be because I started taking medication for anxiety). And how I know the elliptical is really working? My asthma actually starts acting up. Normally that'd be a bad thing, but it had been so long since I had a proper work out that my asthma was nearly non-existent, lol. So when I start getting wheezy I know I'm getting a good work out. 8D

About the meal thing; I used to have a small breakfast, no lunch, and a huge supper. Now I have a moderate breakfast, good lunch, and a little supper. I just hope all these changes start kicking my butt into shape. I'll try to be more active in this thread. I do feel better now, thank you~ ♡

Your elliptical is working if, when you tense up your leg muscles, you can feel more hard than flab on your legs. Just be careful, we don't want you dying. But make sure to go get those B Vitamins, I promise they are godly.

I'm glad you feel better! See how much good fellow cosplayers can do? They're like your family <3

lawliet: You gaining weight (yet your measurments are the same) means that you are turning fat into muscle (well not literally fat into muscle, as they aren't the same cell types). Keep into account that muscle is much denser than fat so you weighing more isn't a bad thing. I had my bodyfat percentage taken at the beginning of the school year and at the end of the semister after weight training and cardio. I ended up about 5 pounds heavier, but I lost about 3-5% body fat at the same time. (and I look much slimmer then I did then.)

So, don't go by the numbers on the scale, but by how good you look, feel, and how your jeans fit.

Hello! Joining all the way from Canada! Because everyone on this thread sounds so supportive and wonderful. <33 I'm 5'5 and 110 lbs. an I know I don't have to lose any weight, I just want to tone up my legs, inner thighs to be exact. I'm also aiming, if possible to gain hips? I have fairly broad shoulders ;.; and slim boyish hips, but I prefer to cosplay, not crossplay!

Goals:
~As stated, sliming thighs
~Gaining hips
~Losing inches, not pounds

Bad Habits:
~General Laziness
~Being inconstistant; I get hard on myself and go crazy with working out, and cutting sugar, fat, salt etc. etc.
~I LOVE chai tea, hot chocolate, and basically most beverages from my local Starbucks. <3
~No willpower and I'm not motivated

Plan:
~Cut back on snacks
~Eat more lean proteins. (I'm a vegitarian, but right now, as my mom always says, I'm more of a junkaterian.
~Hike up Cory Rock every weekend.
~Jog around the block 3-5 times a week.
~2-3 days a week, various toning exercises.

Yup! Oh! Anyone who wants a little bit of advice on tummy/arm/shoulder toning, just say because I'm and ex-boxer and I'm well informed in exercises concerning those areas! Ciao

If you want to, you could always imagine your a sword woman from an anime (Saber, etc) or a game (Charlotte, etc) and start swinging to wooden or bamboo sword for an hour every day in the morning and in the afternoon.

You have to use something as an inspiration right? Why not games or anime?

Okies, so my friends have lost TONES of weight from just doing this:

-Cutting down sugar to a minimum or out entirely (no starches, and only whole wheat pasta if you MUST)
-A bottle or two fo water a day when not drinking no sugar tea.
-Talking a walk (normally around 10-30min) either before or after dinner.

Seriously, my friends had to go on a strict diet for their mother who was borderline diabeties, and BAM! I have NEVER seen my friends looks so good. One of them (they're sisters) was already a good healthy weight and was slim and petite. The other was 5'7 and she knew she was overweight (not nessesarily obiese, but close). They went on the sugar busters diet, I think. Now you think cutting out ALL sugar was something you couldn't do, well that was the same for my little petite friend. Every now and again they would have a treat. It would be few and far between (mostly friend's birthdays and only a small portion of birthday cake if their friends insisted). So it wasn't about denying yourself all thet hings you loved, it was jsut moderating and cutting back on a whole lot of stuff.

Well that was my two sense on how women could loose weight safely and healthfully.

Now onto my thing:

Okay so I'm trying to not only get in shape for cosplay, but for my martial arts as well.

My goals:

-More muscle mass
-6-pack for the sake of my lower back pain (I know it's caused by lack of muscle mass down there in my abdominals)
-calves, theighs and bum be gone!
-loose the love handles
-Go back to being the 145 pound girl I used to be...Y-Y...like...a year ago.

<--I would like to achieve this by September 21st (Anime Weekend Atlanta)

My hinderances and banes:

-Food in general.
-Sugar (I am a sweet-aholic)
-Over-eating both during the actual meals and eating when I'm bored.
-ADHD- yeah...I know it's been posted in this forum before, but I am diagnosed ADHD and it is so frustraiting when I get up to go exercise or something and I get distracted from it! Or worse, I loose total interest.
-Lack of perserverence. I really need someone to kick me in the bum and make me do it (at least partially). Basically I need group support. (thus...I am here)

Now I know I am really young to be asking for support and trying to loose weight and yata yata yata. But I would rather be fit and in shape now than later. So thank you in advance. I will be posting progress pics (I hope) in 2-month intervals. I will reach my goal!!! YOSHA!!!

OH! I'm 5'8 and between 153-160 pounds (your weight changes from morning to night because your bones settle once your up and standing...yay for gravity). Gods...I feel heavy.

P.S. Mom bought me a yoga ball and yoga ball program....trying it out tomarrow! Is going to stock up on sugar free gum Every time I feel like I should eat something (not when my tummy i growling and I'm reall, truely hungry) usually due to boredom I'll pop a piece or two in my mouth. I'm hopfully going to get back to my shinkendo classes in Feb. Darn tutoring.

Yea, I'm aware of that, but what I meant was I feel and look fatter to myself. My stomach is all rolly and my hips are fat and sassy! xD

When I started lifting weight a few months ago I really noticed the difference on my arms, especially my forearms really toned up nicely. But I haven't noticed changes anywhere else recently. I haven't been working out long enough to build up muscle on my legs yet (and I gained the weight before I got the elliptical) and when I poke or squeeze my lower half, it's definitely not muscle. I hope you realize how little sense that makes. xD Your bones can't "settle" and they won't weigh any less or any more unless you cut a chunk out of them or grew some. What's actually happening is that you're intaking water and food throughout the day, so you weigh more in the evening. However, you will often LOOK slimmer in the morning because your weight does distribute differently from laying down. Then as you're sitting and standing throughout the day, your fat and skin sags and makes you more rolly polly. xD

Good luck with getting in shape~! ;3;

.

Thats actually not bones setteling (if anything were to change because of bones setteling, it would be your height.) Your weight will change between 4-5 pounds, depending on the time of day, because of water retention, and the food you eat. If you want an accurate (more accurate anyways) body weight, weigh yourself every day at the same time for a week then average the weights out. (even better, 3 times a day for a week, but that gets annoying)

Sounds like you're metabolism slowed down a bit.
Depending on how much you are currently eating, you may need to cut down, or space out your meals, say if you're eating 2000 caloies a day, space them out so 5 meals a day of 400 calories, instead of 3 meals of ~650 calories. That should help you kick your metabolism up.

A note on metabolism: Increased muscle mass will proportionately increase metabolism in the body.

Some things I took notice of yesterday, when assessing my fitness plan and writing a new workout split.
- I noticed that, since this summer, I have been at about 7% bodyfat. I slimmed down for the summer by maintaining my lifting regimen but scaling down my diet to a more normal one (when, in the winter and early spring, it was an ARRR GROW HUGE diet).
- I went from 8-10% to 6-7% in about 2 months, by doing some very relaxed dieting and still lifting very hard. I have been at this same general bodyfat, with very minor gains in size and good gains in strength (which is to be expected, since I am strength training for sport and not lifting for growth).

If this is all Greek, I understand. I'm kind of a musclehead dope and tend to talk out loud about this stuff the same way I think about it in my head. But what I'm trying to say is,
1) I have not, in two years, stopped actively lifting, or consuming adequate complex carbs or protein, so over the course of that time I have either been maintaining or slowly gaining lean mass.
2) My body cut fat and has maintained this low body fat % for several months, without serious dieting, due to the caloric demand put in place by my lean mass and the constant state of healing and recovery from lifting.

If you increase your lean mass, your metabolism will increase proportionately, and make it that much easier for you to get down to a lower body fat percentage, especially if you can diet with discipline, which I have not really done. I still had cookies and pizza here and there, but in moderation, and never let up with my lifting. To put your body in a constant state of recovery, through hard training (aerobic, high intensity cardio, weightlifting, or other form of exercise), is analogous to creating a much higher caloric demand in the body. Complimenting that with increased muscle mass, your actual caloric demand will become even higher.

So, consider those very basic concepts when deciding how to get into shape. I have utilized the same principles in being a personal trainer in my spare time, to friends and coworkers in the Marines, with good results. Hard facts, rather than fad diets and quick-fixes, necessitate hard work and consistency.. but they'll get you where you want to be.

My problem is actually the opposite. I think I really messed up my metabolism from not eating enough so now my body stores fat like crazy. I used to work at home (illustrator) and I'd be on the computer pretty much every waking moment and I'd get multi-tasking and forget to eat. There were some days where all I ate was a bowl of cereal or two. So what I've been focusing on the past 6 months is just eating healthy and regularly.

And Hiryuu, doesn't it feel fantastic to eat a scrumptious oh-so-good-for-you meal? *0* I had sushi, spinach, and some cooked salmon for supper and it was SO GOOD. Unfortunately lunch wasn't so successful and consisted of a bagel with its weight in cream cheese. xD

So yea, Ender, I have a hard time just hitting 1000 cals a day, but today I picked up the B-Complex pills that Hiryuu suggested to me so here's hoping they help me out~! Now please excuse me, I need to go get in my 30 mins of workout! :D

A note on metabolism: Increased muscle mass will proportionately increase metabolism in the body.

- I went from 8-10% to 6-7% in about 2 months, by doing some very relaxed dieting and still lifting very hard. I have been at this same general bodyfat, with very minor gains in size and good gains in strength (which is to be expected, since I am strength training for sport and not lifting for growth).

zigcat, I am quite curious on your chat here...this body fat measurement...how/where does one get such a measurement? Mind you, I don't have a regular doctor nor health insurance, so running off to some office is not on my preferred list of things to do. Can one assess such a measurement at home? Here's where I'm at...I'm 5' 4" (roughly) and currently stuck at 148.5 lbs, no matter what I do, I can't lose weight. In all truthfulness, I couldn't care a less what I actually weigh, so long as I don't LOOK fat, which I do. My job is basically warehouse work, I throw case paper all night (ten 500-count reams of paper per case = 40 - 45 lbs each case) along with other heavy jobs. If I can figure out this body fat thing, I'm thinking I can get to where I want to be maybe not easily, but at least I'll be more encouraged if I see THAT particular number decreasing, as you did. Any help, of course, is appreciated! I thought about PM-ing you, but maybe your suggestions and comments can help out others as well.
