View Full Version : Azula's Boots. [Avatar: The Last Airbender]

So just when I was thinking that Azula would be hard enought to make I notice what she has on her feet. She had boots, but not just any boots, but pointy curly ones.
Does anyone have any idea on how I could come across making these successfully?

Meh, I guess no one else knows either.

Buy a brownish/reddish boot and for the curled up part use cardboard painted yellow and shaped similar to the image (?)

Here's a link for a bunch of different kinds of elf shoes. You could buy a pair of them and then modify: http://www.costumzee.com/tag/elf+shoes/

It doesn't look very sturdy, but I also came across this pattern, which you could probably modify to make the toes less pointy and then make it out of something better than felt: http://sewing.about.com/od/hallowee1/ss/elfshoes.htm

You needn't try to reinvent the wheel. Especially for footwear. Conventions involve a lot of walking, and any significant shoe experimentation can tend to end badly. Wearing shoes that were made to be worn in the way you intend to wear them means avoiding a whole host of potential problems, later down the line.

These boots already exist, and you can buy them online: just search Mongol boots and choose your favorite way to recolor them, for Azula. Why Mongol? Well, they are also worn in various forms of Chinese opera, but these tend to be more varied and a little less ... historical, at times (as in, potential crazy-evil platform soles, for instance). Mongolian boots are built for herding sheep and goats and camels. They are made for working and for walking in. Also, the Mongolian 'traditional' dress is not as widely recognized as the Chinese, so it is easier to find conformity in what is being sold on the international market. It's not as 'hyped'. So it's not that there aren't Chinese sources. It's just that they're made for special purposes, only, and they're a bit harder to find, on the web.

Mongol boots are an excellent idea! Thanks for the suggestion.

Excellent info!! Yeah I want to find these as well for my Aang costume- everyone pretty much wears standard Fire Nation boots, and I can't find anything like them anywhere!
...Does anyone here know of anyone that has some, or can make/sell them? I just looked up the Mongol boots and the only ones I found were pretty pricey (ie over $100) and would still need some heavy editing. I was thinking of just buying some pointy toed boots and then painting them and adding the shin cover, but I am bad at things and would probably hurt myself. *sigh* this is why I hate cartoons, all I want are Fire Nation shoes and a wolf helmet, why is that so hard??

I know the feeling. That's why I cosplay, so I can have nifty awesome clothing and excuses to wear it.

I found a tutorial on making Mongol boots (it's here (http://www.augustphoenix.com/studypages/ulanbaator_boot.htm)). I'm crazy enough to try making the boots for my Zuko cosplay, out of felt since leather is almost definitely out of my price range (I got the idea from here (http://www.renaissancetailor.com/demos_slippers.htm)). I'll try and make a tutorial if it goes well.
