So, I'm looking for any ideas for costumes for my nephew and niece for JACON 08 this year. I want to make them a cosplay outfit, but I'm fresh out of ideas. If anyone has any suggestions, please post them here!

Here is a picture of my nephew and niece (http://a143.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/38/l_fafc6355d3b9fae5586e63e94f02f956.jpg). He's 3 and she's 9 months old if that helps any.

:D Thanks a lot!

Your nephew would be really really cute as Markl from Howl's Moving Castle. XD

Well, lemme see. At Zenkaikon, we had a young girl dressed as Sailor Jupiter and her older brother was dressed as Naruto. They were adorable and Kawaii!

I second the Naruto idea for your nephew.^^
For your niece almost any of the Sailor Scouts would be adorable.
Or even Kisa from Fruits Basket. Oh! Or Yuzuyu (http://aishiteruze.nibelheim.org/yuzuyu.html) from Aishiteruze Baby.

By the way, they are both adorable <3

If you want to have them cosplay from a single series, you could try and dress them as pokemon (the girl as Pichu, the boy as Pikachu or Squirturtle), or as much younger versions of Inuyasha and Sesshomaru.

A couple things that popped into my mind were:

The Gushoshin (http://ynm.moonliteshadow.net/gallery/gallery/125.jpg) from Yami no Matsuei (Decendents of Darkness)

Moogles (http://www.rpgsite.net/images/screens/3/moogle.jpg) from Final Fantasy (these ones are from XII)

Sailor ChibiChibi (http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/s/sailorchibichibimoon.jpg) from Sailormoon StarS

Takeru/T.K. (http://lavender.fortunecity.com/eastwood/486/TAKERU.jpg) from Digimon Adventure

Your niece is really young, and somehow I don't see a three year old boy having much patience for wearing most costume pieces either. I'd stick with something simple for both of them, and nothing involving wigs. Like other people have been saying anime/video game critters would be a good option. Then you could just make hoodies or onsie pajama type deals and decorate them with ears and such. Or if you go the Pokemon route you could make a Pokemon trainer outfit for your nephew and let your niece be his Pokemon.

Ok, when i saw your nephew, the first thing that came to my mind was a young version of Ichigo from Bleach.

I don't know about your nephew, but in regards to your niece...

There was someone from AniZona 3 cosplaying Tifa, but it was her baby girl that stole the show (literally; they participated in the masquerade and everyone loved it) with her baby chocobo outfit. Just put "Baby Chocobo" into the costume search box...There's only one entry there, from Khiorii.

With little boys, the first thing I think of is child Edward and Alphonse Elric, from Fullmetal Alchemist. The outfits are quite easy, but may not be recognizable unless you went as Trisha (the mother), as her outfit is.

Babies do well in "mascot" costumes; cute things made of fleece. Ryo-oki or Ken-oki do well (cabbit things from Tenchi Muyo), Mokona (Clamp's works...Magic Knights Rayearth or the new crossover series thing between XXXholic and Tsubasa Chronicles).

There's also Kenji, Kenshin's son (from Rurouni Kenshin), who also conveniently has red hair. Only shows up in the last chapter of the manga, but in the OVAs he's there (older, though).

He might like wandering around as a mini-Ichigo, as suggested (it's the red hair!), and she could go as a mini-Rukia or perhaps one of Ichigo's little sisters (not very recognizable, but she's less than a year old, so she won't know!).

When making costumes for really young kids like your niece and nephew, also keep in mind how much time and money you want to invest in a costume that will (if you are lucky!) fit them for about 2 hrs! ^_^ And if you start the costumes early, be sure that you take into account how much bigger they will be at the time of the con. Also realize that they will get crumbs, apple juice and possibly bodily fluids on whatever they wear.

I agree with all of Vampirate's advice. Keep it simple and keep the number of pieces to a minimum. When my kids were that age I made their costumes out of hoodies, sweat shirts and sweat pants (as V. suggests). Ears and tails can be sewn on, felt symbols can be glued on. They are cheap, quick to make and easy to get on and off.

Also, at 3 years, my kids already had really strong opinions about what they would and wouldn't wear. I'd present some options to your nephew and ask him what he thinks. Otherwise you may make a really cute costume only to find that he refuses to wear it. Personally, I like the Ash and Pokemon idea. I think that most 3-year old boys would like to be Ash. But ask him!

I can see the boy as that guy from Naruto with the underpants headband! I really wish I knew his name, but I really dont know that much about Naruto.

Little kids always look adorable as any character, even older characters, because they look like chibi versions.

Are the kids into anime? It's always best to find costumes for children they'll like, or else they'll just want to take them off five minutes into the con.

Jacob doesn't watch it a whole lot, but he likes Sailor Moon (He likes the musicals because they sing, too. xD). I think that's the only one he's actually told me he likes. However, when I look at cosplay pictures, he does point out which costumes he wants. For example, he pointed out that he wanted a Roxas costume one time. But he's generally into things like Blue's Clues, Spiderman, Power Rangers, etc. I'll pull up some pictures of stuff and let him pick what he likes.

Danielle is 9 months old, so she can't really say. xD
