It's actually pretty hard to find accurate Matt boots, because as it would have it, that fanart of his shoes isn't quite right either. There is actually one frame of the manga where you see only his shoes (which can be seen here (http://www.onemanga.com/Death_Note/99/02/) - also Spoilers as a heads up), they're pretty short, and are quasi Napoleon Dynamite puffy boots. Apparently these boots exist because a friend of mine has seen girls on campus wearing them. However the fact remains that they look kind of like dorky snow boots. I'm not a huge fan of the platform boots for male characters if you can't help it (but that's just my personal taste), and I think a good replacement would be Paratrooper Boots (I've got some myself, and they look very reasonable as Matt's boots - in my opinion), however if you want to go for the panel things he's got in the front of his boots, the ones you found are really the best option.

The ones you found seem close enough, I havent really got much to say after that last post...

Those boots would work nice, but the only thing is the big heel. That's the only problem with them really (as far as I can tell), but they do look nice.

I have a quick question on his boots (I am also attempting Matt) How high are they? There not exactly to his knee, but a little lower would you say.

In the manga shot, which navigated supplied, the boots look laced up, but that can just be my eyes playing tricks on me.

As far as I've ever been able to tell, they're not laced up, but I do see where you're coming from, when you look at the frame that has Matt standing against a wall and there's a profile shot, it doesn't look like his boots lace. I don't exactly remember which chapter it is, its one of the first chapters he shows up in, I know that. (My Matt and I have done hours of just sitting staring at pictures of him trying to figure out what the crap he's wearing) His boots go about mid shin, more towards the short side. Seen here (http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb151/allyoop6216neo/Matt/Matt12.jpg) and here (http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m316/Uchihagirl12/Death%20note/1189386161792.jpg) - there's a bigger version of this but I can't find it for the life of me.

Anyway, the bits on his boots look like straps, like the boots OP posted.

As I am Navigated's Matt, I will add a bit to this as well...

I like the ones you found, they are thouroughly sh*tkicking for Matt. However, on the argument of his boots in general, the puffy-fronted ones do exist, because I have seen them. I don't know where to get them, and they are probably hellishly expensive. But! Matt appears to change boots when he has his vest on, but only in the manga. The first pair of boots look more like cowboy boots, but without the pointed front. The 2nd pair are the ones you see in the anime.

I doubt he actually changes boots, it's probably just a problem with the accuracy of the drawings themselves, but still, if you really wanted to argue it (say, for competing the costume) you could.

The boots I got, I like, and they were $30. I considered adding to them to make them exactly like Matt's anime boots, but I didn't bother, because I wanted to shoot myself for making the vest out of actual cowhide and I was about done with making that costume... Way more time consuming than I thought it would be...

Anyway. I think it would be nice to have more Matts whose boots are not uggs and don't lace up. And OP's boot choice is quite sexy, besides.

But, I didn't find any "poofy" looking boots, but I found ones with straps across the front and all the way down the boot that I'm thinking about buying and using for his boots when I cosplay him at Ikasucon (if I get my cosplay finished in time, since most of my money is being devoted to my Ichigo cosplay).

My friend who may be cosplaying as Matt (but hasn't started yet, despite the fact that we have less than a month) decided just to wear a pair of my Combat Boots that were "long" instead of "chunky." We're using the "chunky" ones for my Mello cosplay.
Anyways, I agree that those boots are good except for the heel, but you can do what I did, and get one from a retired family member, or go to your local Army surplus store. If you don't have a local Army surplus store, you can go to the flea markets or the local Goodwill or Salvation Army. Things are usually cheap there. Otherwise, I guess you're stuck with those boots.
I hope I was of some help.

I was thinking about his boots today and what if I couldn't find ones I liked. What about getting just the lace up combat/army boots (I know they have some they look like his, but they don't have those little square pieces on them), and get pieces of black leather and super glue or something onto the boots, but then when I thought about that, that most likely wouldn't turn out so good (let alone work), but it's worth a try maybe.

Here, I shall take a picture of my combat boots that I spoke of in one of my posts, so you can see what I'm talking about. Mine are really old and really worn in, so anything you get (assuming you buy new ones) won't look quite this ratty.

They're a bit shorter than his (but long enough to tuck your pants into) but the boots actually have puffy pieces on it, albeit not in the right places, but I think the effect that they were going for was paratrooper boots. And as Goldenrodfairy said, Matt's boots do appear to change from the first time you see him in his basement to when you see him outside. A problem you might encounter if you want to put the puffy parts on the boots would be lacing them up again, because they're meant to be tight so you don't break your ankle jumping out of an airplane, so tying them up tight won't really be possible if you glue over the laces.

Those look a tad too.. gothic to be Matt's boots. Also, I believe his boots are all fabric. These boots have metal for straps, I believe. However, they do look nice, and I may purchase them.
