View Full Version : What Color is Hughes' Undershirt, Anyway? (FMA)

The title is pretty self-explanatory. I've seen a lot of variation, from purple to dark brown to almost wine red, but is there any real reference (not fanart) for the shirt Maes Hughes wears under his uniform jacket? I know that Hawkeye wears a dark brown short-sleeved mock turtleneck...Is Hughes just a dark brown t-shirt?
Thanks for your time.

If I remember correctly, it's a short sleeved black shirt... I'll see if I can locate a reference.

From my own personal ref, anyone under the the rank of major wears a black shirt (or turtle neck in Riza's case). Any ranking officers major and above where a white dress shirt. It makes sense because both Armstrong (who is a major) and Mustang (col) both wear white dress shirts. Since Hughes falls in between them in rank he would also wear the white dress shirt.

Looks like you can go either way...
The dress shirt is seen in the CD cover...http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g264/samuraitastic/Hagaren_Song_File_-_Maes_Hughes_Son.jpg
But nowhere else ^.^; (Youshoul be able the see the shirt through the collar as on Mustang's)
We've got a dark brown scoop neck...
But the same picture also goes to black for some reason ^.^;;;

Looks like that fan art with the brown shirt is from the isval war (where Hughes held the rank of captain, ranking below major, the col was a major as all alchemists start off with the rank of major) Therefore the black and white dress shirts make sense. Though I wouldn't worry since all the photos of hughes have his dress shirt hiddden. He keeps his collar closed.

Well, the reason I ask is because I'm not brave enough to make a stab at the actual uniform top, and I don't want the person cosplaying to be mistaken for Mustang if Hughes doesn't wear a dress shirt. I think I might just go with the dark brown scoop neck: seems to be the most popular, and it'll make the most sense for my climate. Thanks again! ^_^

The top isn't that hard, In fact I was a newb at sewing and my military outfit was my first cosplay outfit I put together. It just takes time.
Just make sure for Hughes you have pics of his daughter, and act like the proud dad he is and you'll be fine.
