For fun/future cons I'm making a scaled replica of the Hammer of the Naaru from World of Warcraft. A 3D rotating view of the model can be found here http://www.wowdb.com/item.aspx?id=28800. After measuring the whole of the hammer will by 70 inches long with the head being 30 x 15 x 15 (if placed inside a box of said dimensions the edges of head would touch box sides). My biggest challenge right now is how do I make the Hammer Head. I'd love to make it an actual translucent gem so that the light can reflect through it and give a cool effect, but I think a resin gem that size would be insanely Heavy and hard to create properly. Any suggestions would be great!.

That much epoxy or polyester resin would way a ton. If you knew some one that works or dose bronze casting they have a machine that spins the mould so that you just coat the outside.

The othe thing you can do is cut pieces of clear plastic and make the geometric shapes of the crystals and glue them together like Fai’s staff

Yui Dragon Buster is made out of hot glue

That first one is a good idea, thanks. Now with the size of this I wonder if it would be better to use a good amount of internal support structure. Thoughts? Also what kind of plastic do you think was used in that? Soda bottles or plastic sheeting?

One person used plastic bottles but the one I linked used plastic sheets. You can find 0.02 and 0.05 thick acetate sheets are sold at most art stores for fairly cheap. They are really light and when you glue all the facets of the “stone” together the glue will give it strength. The more sections glued the strength it has.

You can use glass paint to tint it purple afterwards.

It is still possible to create a translucent mallet head for this, if strength is a variable.

One way to implement it would be to construct the "gem" from transparent fabric sewn in such a way as to impart the basic geometry, and then inflate it with a clear plastic bladder.

That said, the Grand Marshal's Demolisher is cooler looking.

Nice idea for the Bladder, but I think this needs something more solid. Also, yes the GM Hammer looks cool, but its also not obscenely huge like Hammer of the Naaru. Also the GM hammer is way to normal looking.
