i'm sure this thread will contain some spoilers, so consider yourself spoiler-warned for the whole thread!

i don't know what to think about this series. right now, i'm on episode 21. i'm actually enjoying it a lot overall. the animation is kinda simple but it looks really good by TV standards. i love the characters and while the stories are kinda slight, i think the characters make up for it.

basically it's the standard anime/manga premise where the guy finds himself with a cute but incredibly naive girl who's totally dedicated to him. broadly speaking, you could lump tons of shows in here... Saber Marionette, Ah! My Goddess, um... zillions of others that are escaping me right now.

however, Chobits is done really well in my opinion. also, the other theme in the series is people's increasingly reliance on machines, computers, and other gadgets to the point where they have a tough time interacting with other people. this secondary theme seems to be gaining momentum as the series progresses and i think it's pretty interesting.

anyway, i have to admit: even though i like it, this show totally creeps me out sometimes!

seriously, there's a ton of sexual tension between Chi and Hideaki, and i swear to god her mental age is about 7 *at most*.

i mean, what's up with THAT? i'd like to hear what you guys think.

I've only seen a few episodes and I really like it so far, but I totally agree it just seems so wrong sometimes.

I think it's cute, regardless of Chii's seemingly child-like actions. I mean, look at Shuichi and Yuki! I jst finished Chobits, and I love it. ^______________^ Ish wonderful, even if there are a lot of shows that are similar. Each has its own twist, ne?

i love it too. i mean, a lot of shows have the older dude/younger girl thing... this just seems like the youngest girl (mentally) yet. ^^;;; erm i still like it, though.... although it's definitely pushing it...

Weeellll....I think Chobits feeds on the odvious perversion that is slightly different than the perversion in America. There seems to be a fixation on younger girls that are more "innocent". I mean, where do you think the obsession with the white panties came from?

Finished the series...It's pretty good. Although I didn't pick it apart as far as who wants who.

Just keep in mind the difference in cultures here as to the content being specifally mentioned here.

Chobits is still super, uber cute. xD I can't get over Sumomo.. ::sheepish grin:: Even so, you gotta give CLAMP some credit..;.; it's so...adorable! I couldn't put down the manga for one second because I was so hooked on it at first glance. loL. xD That reminds me -- I should download things...

I haven't seen a lot yet (7 eps), but I have to admit Chii and Hideki creep me out. Why? Not only because of her mental age, but also because of the fact that she /serves/ his every whim. It comes too close to those Japanese university boys who, interviewed about Tokimeki Memorial, said that those girls were more real to them than actual flesh-and-blood girls, that they wished girls on the street acted like that (now if you've played the game, you know it means be lobotomized and giggle at everything a man says).

He should live in reality and do his landlord. ^___^

As for the treatment of the age-old "can machines develop feelings bit"... I think it's veryvery weak. If you want something well done on the topic, watch Star Trek: The Next Generation, especially "Measure of a man". Now they put thought into it.

And lastly, I can't stand Chii.
I am tired of the stupid innocent "look I am cute take advantage of me" female characters in anime. I want women with a backbone, I want strong /capable/ women. I want more Lady Unes (GW), more Farangis (Arslan), more Karen (Gundam 8th MS team).

Maybe if I could find women I can relate to in anime, I'd stop
cross-playing. LOL

Seriously, for now (and I reserve the possibility of changing my mind once I have seen the whole) Chobits = Oh my Goddess. Which means it insults my sensibilities as a liberated woman. ^___^

I agree, and that's an interesting point about the Japanese university boys preferring the Tokimeki Memorial girls over girls in real life.

The really interesting thing about Chobits is that the latter episodes (I'm on 20 or 21 now) increasingly deal with the problem you mentioned. In some ways, it's the absolute worst example of "slavishly devoted girl" anime out there, but at the same time it seems self-aware of the problem, too.

It's hinted at in the earlier episodes, but later on (SPOILERS AHOY) we find out that both Hideki's "little sister" at the restaurant and his teacher both had former loves who abandoned them because they were no longer able to deal with real people and preferred Persocons instead. The rich Persocon-whiz kid (sorry, forget his name) is shown as a *very* sad character who has replaced his deceased sister with a Persocon who he's programmed to act as much like his sister as possible. Random people walking down the streets with their Persocons are shown in a creepier and creepier light and there's a lot of talk how this problem is affecting the ability of people to relate to one another, instead of to machines.

So, that's why I don't know what to think about this series. It's the worst offender of the slavish-girl genre but sometimes I wonder if it's not that way *on purpose* because they're trying to make a point related to the "university boys/Tokimeki Memorial" problem you mentioned.... it's almost like Chobits is parodying the genre sometimes.

I probably have my hopes up too high, though. Hideaki probably bangs Chi in the end and he realizes she really has human feelings and then Persocons and humans learn to get along and live happily ever after. Oh well, I can hope!

I've only read two volumes of the manga, and haven't seen the anime yet, but here's my take on it.

CLAMP likes to do parodies, from what I understand. MKR and Sakura both were magical-girl parodies, right? I think Chobits is another parody, but not in the same sense. It's much more serious in tone. Persocoms are the Belldandy-type characters, but they also symbolize the Belldandy-type character in a deeper way. And I think some of the Chobits characters, especially Yumi, symbolize normal, real-life girls. Yumi grows sad everytime Persocoms are mentioned, and seems relieved when Hideki says that Chii is not real. I think Chobits is saying *not* to become obsessed with unreal things.

Or maybe I'm reading into it too much. I tend to do that (damned AP English classes >.<), but it's probably that interpretation that has me so in love with this series *_*.

Hmm, good post Tenshi. I haven't read any other manga by CLAMP (shame on me) but I was hoping they had something like that up their sleeve.

> I think Chobits is another parody,
> but not in the same sense. It's much > more serious in tone.

Did you ever see Starship Troopers the movie, and read the book?

First I saw the movie, and I was like, "what the f***?". It seemed so ridiculous. It was entertaining in parts but it was just waaaaaay over the top with all of the ridiculous gung-ho fighting and melodrama. I didn't know what to think of it. I thought it sucked for the most part.

After I read the book, though, I "got" the movie. The book is a very ultra right-wing conservative blood-and-guts sort of story. After reading it I realized the movie was a TOTAL parody of the book. It took the ideas in the book and exaggerated them to the point where you couldn't take them seriously.

I'm sort of hoping that, like you said, Chobits is taking this "young naive girl" genre and parodying it to the extreme. in order to sort of riducule it.

>Or maybe I'm reading into it too

Haha, I'm totally with you here.

I've only read the first two volumes of the manga released by Tokyopop. I really don't understand why American girls are so enamored with this, it's very clearly an ecchi manga aimed at men. Chii looks and acts like a toddler, I definitely agree with the pedophelia.

Yuzuki, and other fully-grown female persocons don't bother me, and I actually like the theme of computers replacing people, and how it affects society. However, it seems like the series is half serious, and half fanservice.

Well, even Evangelion was 50% fanservice/anime cliche-fest, and 50% Serious Story. Not that I'm putting Chobits in Evangelion's league, but... you *can* have both, right? ^_^

KuroBara
09-30-2002, 03:36 PM
Of course you can have both. I love Fushigi Yuugi, which is 90% sparkly bishounen and 10% plot ^_^

A serious storyline with a bit of fanservice mixed in is fine. Going back to your original post, it's just odd that Chii is so young.

John Booty

I just hope the extremely young mental age of Chi is because they're making some sort of point other than, "relationships with seven year olds" are cool!

Childlike women were (and are) very sought after in many cultures, so it does not surprise me that they are so present in anime.

Most of the Japanese girls my age I have met throughout the years were very much giggling schoolgirls talking in high-pitched voices, even when they were in college. There seems (to me) to be this omnipresent culture of "cute" that makes me believe that there is no point to Chii being such a mental child, other than being "cute".

Am I the only one who was rather disturbed by where they decided to put her on/off switch? Turning the persocon on is almost an act of rape, and at least an incredible act of power over another being.

(Moreover how come until now I only think I /glimpsed/ one male persocon into the background of a scene?)

I think at the moment I am a little unsettled by the underlying images in that anime.

Yeah, seriously. It's another thing that's so ridiculous that makes me think that's sort of a parody or pseudo-parody.

I don't know if you watched the episode with the scene where Chi accidentally gets a job at the porno place... that was seriously disturbing, and it involved her on/off switch.

Rosiel, if you've got the time and access to the episodes, you might want to check out some of the latter episodes. I'd be interested to know what you think about the parody/statement *against* these stereotypes that we're suspecting Chobits of being...

Not that I'm convinced that's what it is yet! And not that being a parody really excuses things that are just wrong.

I did some Tokimeki Memorial a few months back... Ack,it seemed retarded. I agree with you about Chii's personality and women liberation and such. Sometimes, they make female characters so desperate for men..... But you must admit that Chii's cute though ^_^ I'm a sucker for cute characters.

There were many reasons why I dropped AP English. One was that it required too much reading. Heck, I took one term and I said sayonara.

Yeah, I saw 5 eps, it's so weird.... Chii is all little and stuff and that switch down there is kinda pushing it. And what's up with hiding her from his friend? If it's a persocom, there shouldn't be a problem :P

I have all the episodes, I just need to sit down and WATCH them. As of now, I don't really see the parody, mostly because Chobits lack either the beat-you-over-the-head-it's-a-parody vibe or the dry satirical wit of well written serious parodies. I need to re-read MKR too, in order to see how Clamp writes parodies, since I had never seen the parody in that either, and if I can see it there, I might be able to find the same patterns in Chobits.

> But you must admit that Chii's cute though ^_^

As for Chii being cute, I will admit I find the ears simply adorable, and that on artbook pics she is indeed cute. (in action, no, because I don't find simple-minded cute)

The thing is, cute doesn't do anything for me. ^___^
It's personalities that impress me, strong, smart, independant characters.

It's a dating simulation game in which you play a high school boy and try to pick up girls.

I played that game once! Except it was called, "actually being a teenager and actually going to a real physical high school".

*falls over snickering* Now that is funny!

Side track: Is Tokimeki Memorial the game Lord Ilpalazzo is playing in the Excel Saga episode when they literally transform the series into a parody shoujo mess? Does it have something to do with the last responce Ilpalazzo usually has in the video game being "Put it In"? Just curious.

I do agree, though. I've seen next to nothing of Chobits, but the cute factor is a major annoyance with me to beging with. (The cosplayers creep me out and I find the design quite dull.) I understand how it's a thing in their culture... then again who can blame the guys for having weird ideal women when yaoi and shonen-ai is so popular among women! I can't even explain these concepts to people who aren't anime fans....

However, it is terrible... and it is a form of pediophelia. I agree there.

Isn't the manga version of Steel Angel Kurumi "turned on" in a similar way?

So that's why Japanese women refuse to have normal voices? It really is just more emphasis of a culturally decided attractive feature? Damn.

Super spoiler warning! ^^

I watched episode 23 last night. Oh MAN!

There was actually a minute where Chii sort of woke up and was acting like an adult (or at least, some sort of normal person) instead of a confused kid!

This other dude was trying to hack into her so she sort of "woke up" or something and her inner asskicking self was activated.

Then Hideaki showed up, and Chi PUTS HIS HAND ON HER *AHEM* AND SAYS, "ONLY YOU CAN TOUCH ME HERE!"

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh @_@ !!!!! *mind boggled*

Then she kissed him, fainted, and woke up retarded again.

Yeah, seriously.

I mean, it was kind of hot when she was acting like a normal person for once and actually being agressive because she *is* really cute.

But then it was back to retard mode, half a minute later. I want to see more of her other personality. It would be great if that other personality is her "real" personality that gets uncovered at some point...
