I don't know where to direct this question on the Anime Vegas site (and that site is slow as molasses in the dead of winter) and I know someone who works on the ball uses this forum.^^;

My question is concerning the masquerade ball. I read on a forum that you don't have to be in formal cosplay to enter the contest? o_O; Is this true, because this isn't making any sense to me right now so I think its best to ask someone with more reliable information. XD

I know the AV site is slow as molasses. I will copy and paste the rules here.

We're proud to introduce a new event this year: The Phantomhive Ball and Social! Ciel Phantomhive and his dear Aunt Madam Red will host this posh event. The Ball will take place from 8 PM to 11 PM on Saturday, and will be located in The Upper Clubhouse level, neat the Theater. Please read on for more information!

Appearance and Etiquette

1) All attendees of the Ball must be dressed to impress! A dress shirt with slacks or a skirt is considered the bare minimum. No T-shirts, jeans, sneakers, or other casual clothing will be allowed. No exceptions!
2) We would be overjoyed to see you in clothing even fancier! Feel free to wear tuxedos, ball gowns, and other evening wear.
3) We expect all attendees of the Ball to behave like polite ladies and gentlemen. Behave at this event like you would behave at your high school prom or homecoming dance.
4) This is not a dance. That type of dance will take place on SUNDAY night! So please wait until that evening to break out glowsticks and related items.
5) Please do not bring prop weapons or signs to this event.
6) Any individual deemed to be misbehaving by Anime Vegas staff will be escorted from the event.

Costume Guidelines

1) Cosplay is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED for this event! In fact, we will be having a mini cosplay contest during the Ball. See "Masquerade Ball Cosplay Contest Rules" down the page.
2) All costumes must adhere to the same dress code guidelines detailed above. If you are not sure your costume is applicable to this event, please visit the animevegas.com forums or cosplay.com forums and ask.
3) Please refrain from bringing large props, wings, or other obstructive costume pieces to the Ball. Attendees will be dancing at this event and your costume should not hamper their ability to move about. Large skirts with hoops and petticoats are fine, but if your skirt has a train you may want to pin it up for this event.
4) Crossplay is allowed, but please keep it tasteful.

Masquerade Ball Cosplay Contest Rules

1) Want to be Queen, King, Prince, or Princess of the Masquerade Ball? This contest is for you! All attendees of the Ball in formal cosplay are eligible!
2) Your costume must be made by yourself or a close friend or family member. No store-bought costumes or commissions. If you bought it from a private seller, eBay, or a department store, it's not eligible.
3) 30 spots will be available in the contest: 15 for girls and 15 for guys. The contest is first come first served, so get there early to enter! A staff member will be there just to hand out entry numbers.
4) Crossplayers will compete as the gender of their character. So a girl dressed as a guy enters for King/Prince, not Queen/Princess.
5) Please be prepared to present yourself in front of the audience. You will be asked to introduce yourself and your cosplay character. Whether you do this "in character" or not is up to you.
6) The four winners will be determined by both the quality of their costume and the audience's reaction. The hosts of the Ball (Ciel and Madam Red) will be judging.
7) The winners will be announced during a ceremony at the Ball. The King, Queen, Prince, and Princess will receive a crown/tiara and bragging rights for the rest of the con!

The rules should answer your question. Thanks!

Well, I'm practically set on what I want to wear. Thanks for passing on the information this way.

Looking forward to enter the contest!

And ballroom dancing too. Glad you guys are enforcing a dress code. If you guys need any ballroom music, my family has been involved in competitive dancesport. Feel free to PM me on cos.com.

Another fancey dance at a con?
Another excuse to wear a suit...

I'll be there dressed to the nines.

Dang, you guy are strict on dress code now. In the AV forums that Jinnai or "Desu" (DJ of the ball) already preselected all the songs in the ball and he's not taking requests. Music is 90% ballads/slow music, 10% everything else.

I don't have to wear the a suit. I'm cosplaying as Death the Kid that day.

@Anti Ai-chan: I wanted to know if the dress I'll be wearing was considered formal enough; well, its nothing too overdone, it's just a black Audrey Hepburn style dress with a belt at the waist.

Oh and my friend wanted to know, since she doesn't like to wear dresses, if she could wear dress pants?

Tenshi

YoyokikoYogurt, please read the rules above. The rules are pretty clear that both outfits are allowed.

ZeroChaos, this is not a dress code for the entire weekend, just this event. It's a chance for people to dress up and have an elegant night; to perhaps be in a more grown-up atmosphere than the rest of the convention.

Mizu angel: I don't think the DJ wants to take requests, but I also don't think it would hurt to make a suggestion in regards to music genres. Go ahead and make your suggestion on the animevegas.com forums. Our DJ is very good at what he does so I bet he will have a good mix of styles :).

Mizu: Swing, big band, jive, etc count as ballroom dance. I believe you're referring to slower types of social dance like waltz, foxtrot, etc.

Looking forward to it!

Hello, finally stumbled on here...

This is Katsuhiko Jinnai. I am running music for the event. (Desu is an inside joke BTW xD)

The music selection is more modern Ballad/Slow Dance/Slow Jams/Love Songs/R+B American music from the 80s and up (90%) and jpop/anime ballads/love songs. The Ice breaker music is mainly j-rock(not hard rock tho)/musical/nolvelty music (10%).

This won't be traditional ballroom dancing if you were looking for Foxtrot, lots of Waltz or Endless Swing (I do have at least one or two Waltz and Swing songs). This is my first time doing anything like this in my 9 year DJ career, so bear with my selections. Plus, I have some surprise music that I don't want to spoil. xD

I specialize in more of a ususal anime convention dance setting (Electronic music and all).My background of mixing is the original Fanime con dance (2002-2003, 2005,2009)

If you were looking to party hard, try Sunday night. Sunday is the Techno dance party, mixed by yours truly as well.

I guess I can break the news on here. All the music at the Phantomhive Ball is video mixed. LIVE. ALL MUSIC VIDEOS.

Live Video Mixing might be a FIRST for any Anime convention Ball. Surely a FIRST for my Career. Enjoy.

Quick question, can we do orginal designs for a certain charater. For example, do Sakura but design an orginal formal dress?

I also have a question! xD Probably a dumb one, but I'll ask anyway. Would I be able to enter the contest with a store bought petticoat? The rest of the costume will be made by me, but I'm unsure if a store bought petticoat would be alright.

I hope this makes sense! xP

Yeah i have a similar question. But about the pants. I made everything for my friend but his pants. Is that ok? Or should i make them as well?

Do you need to be a payed memeber of the convention to attend the Ball?

I believe that will count as a female entry. I think if the outfit is female you go for Queen and the same goes for male. The only exception I can think of would be Utena. lol Not 100% sure on this so you may want to ask another staff member.

This should be fine considering most anime/manga/video game characters don't have fancy attire.

I'm not certain about this one so you may want to ask Tenshi about it via PM.

Yes, just like all events at AV, you will need to have a badge.

You should have made at least 80% of the costume you are wearing. That can be pretty vague, I know, so let me try to lay it out like this.

- If your pants are storebought and the rest of your costume is very simple (say, you only have a basic jacket and/or shirt) then you would not be eligible. Your pants would be 1/3 of the costume.

-If your pants are storebought and the rest of your costume is complicated (say, a jacket with some sort of designs, plus a cape and bootcovers and a self-styled wig) then you would be eligible. The pants would not be a big part of the costume.

This is an informal costume contest but we still want to make sure this contest encourages people to make their own stuff :).

Will there be any coat checks? Or any place to leave our bags and personal belongings? I ask because Fanime's Black and White Ball had an issue about badges and other small items missing. Anime Expo used to have a coat check, but since their Masquerade Ball was much smaller this year, coat check wasn't too necessary.

Just wondering. ^^
