A while ago I decided to make Chidori from Persona 3 for AnimeCon 2010 in end May 2010, but I'm having trouble with it already even though I didn't even start.

Reference: http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/6130/chidoriref.png

See, this is my fourth cosplay ever and I'm not really confident enough to start making it without thorough preparations.

Some questions I have:
1) Would this wig work for Chidori: http://www.cosworx.com/product.php?productid=26259&cat=2495&page=1? I think it'll be long enough, but I don't know how long it is EXACTLY and whether it will reach low enough. (My backup plan: http://www.cosworx.com/product.php?productid=26180&cat=2495&page=1)
2) Is it possible to make this dress by adapting existing patterns, or will it be easier to make my own patterns? If the last thing is the case, do you have any pointers, tutorials, etc. to help me out a little with it?
3) Is it better to buy existing lace or is making my own better for the edges just above the skirt and on the ends of the sleeves? If I'd better make my own, should I make the lace before sewing it to the dress or is it easier to make it by working from the dress's edges?
4) Is it possible to make the sleeves and the attached parts up to the ruffles as a jacket? I thought it would be a nice play on the costume (and nice for hot days), but I prefer it being sturdy first.

PLEASE NOTE: I'm not from the USA so buying USA stuff is very expensive and risky for me. The Customs and Border Protection likes to hold on to packages and charge fees over it, not to mention that I have to pay 20 USD for sending it to my country only. Also, I don't own a credit card and can't buy online without using PayPal since I don't trust bank transfers enough. Also, my country does NOT have WalMarts in it.

dress: http://www.ehow.com/how_2110611_modify-dress-pattern.html (yes you can change an existing pattern, for the diamond shap parts I'd use two layers of fabric and put like a... uhh... its a... like a thin sheet of cotton stuffing... but like a sheet of it, and sew then together, kind of like a quilt. ^_^)
jacket: sure you could do that but it would take some fitting. ^_^
lace: you could buy thin fabric and sew it to be ruffley.
You need to get more reference pictures, and reference pictures of the back too, also when choosing fabric keep your reference pictures with you at all times.
If you have any questions pm me k? ^_^

Well, the problem I have with eBay is that I don't trust it all too much. And I'm really not confident about dying wigs... Especially since I never tried it before and this wig is LONG. I can make bangs and such, but I'd rather buy one that needs as little work as possible.

I'm going to make ruffly thing fabric for e.g. the edges on the skirt, but the edges on the ends of the sleeves and on the points near the hips of the dress look a little too complicated for just ruffling fabric. I want to try making actual lace for that, or find another way to mimic that stuff well.

About the references: this is all I can find - Chidori isn't a main (playable) character in the game she is from, so it's hard to find references. I couldn't find a screenshot of her back, sadly... I have a feeling it's not too different from her front (no bows or something).

Another question I have is what fabric would be nice to use. I'd love to make her dress with e.g. quill, but I'm not sure how well that would work. Does anyone have suggestions?

EDIT: I checked the length of the wig I consider again and it's about the right length. I think I'll just get that one in Burgundy colour, because orange and red make me look very pale and lifeless...

Hey there sorry that youve had some posts already just wanted to give my opinion~

1) http://www.cosworx.com/product.php?productid=26259&cat=2495&page=1? would work fine it seems very long enough x3

2) Pattern wise theres usually loads knocking around id say adapat a Jacket one into a dress so you can get a good edge on the sleeves
3) Id say exisiting because it works wonders making your own can be time consuming but depends what you wana do. You can probs find some pretty accurate ones online :3
4) Same as #2 yes~ using a jacket pattern would work

{Out of curiousity are you from the UK? If so i have some very handy UK sites for lace, patterns etc for you}

I talked to my friend who's a dressmaker when I made my outfit. To us the dress looks like its in three pieces:

- smocked 2 tiered ruffled sundress
- underbust corset
- bell sleeved bolero.

and you can actually find patterns like that online, or if you know someone who makes patterns for a living you could get their help.

Actually this topic is very outdated as I have everything but the bolero done for it... ^^; (I split the dress into a top, skirt and bolero.) But thanks for being so concerned!
