Hey there. My name's Maggie, and for Fanime 2010, I'm hoping to cosplay as a female version of Isaac Clarke from Dead Space. I've already got the basic design down (Which I'll try to scan and post later), and am working out most of it, but one thing I'm a little iffy on is the helmet. Does anyone have any hints or suggestions on how I should go about making this? I've got access to metal and welding equipment, as my father restores WWII airplanes for a living, but if I can pull this off using a lighter material, such as paer mache, I'dlove that too.

Basically, I'm trying to top the cosplay I did last year, which was the Big Sister from Bioshock 2, featured on Destructoid.com (http://www.destructoid.com/bioshock-2-s-big-sister-rips-up-the-con-circuit-139921.phtml) and Joystiq.com (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/15/bioshock-cosplay-melts-our-heart-drains-our-adam/). I was contacted by the Character TD for 2K games because of that costume, and Colin Fix, the character designer, added me on Facebook. I figure this should be a good way to top that one.

Anyhow, any suggestions on anything about the costume, materials I could use, paint techniques, anything would be immensely helpful.

Thanks!

i remember seeing someone make the helmet out of a stiff dense foam, just carved to shape, you could try that or layer and shape some cardboard. I'm like paper craft (building models out of paper) and I remember seeing a dead space helmet and the plasma cutter, I dont know how detailed they are but I could find them for you if you want.

Wat? It's not like Isaac doesn't wear a ton of armor as is, why bastardize the design in some gender-switch bullshit?

I'm not destroying the original design or anything, I'm just altering the top half a little, frankly, so as not to suffocate my breasts. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Regardless of what anyone says, I think you should just do what you want to do.
I mean altering it to a girl version isn't anything bad.

Ha, that's exactly what I'm trying to go for, I'm glad you get it.

And thanks a ton for that link, that's awesome stuff. I'm definitely taking a few leaves out of his book.

Wow. That's a little more risque than I'm going for, heh. Like I said, I don't want to completely change the design to make it girly or sexy anything, I just want it to be able to fit me.

There are three basic reasons I disagree with making a "female version" of armor:
1. It looks hilarious and loses a lot of that "awesome" impression
2. It's easier to make flat surfaces for the chest than areas specifically designed to fit your bazoombas
3. It gives an impression of the "sexy no jutsu," which can have a pretty bad impact on how people view your design
You should try a compression shirt/vest. They compact your chest in a comfortable and natural way that allow for comfortable breathing and eating. They have good reviews even from women with DD cup sizes. Then, you can design the normal armor over it and wear it as long as you like.

That being said, try Volpin's Prop Blog for ideas on how to construct the helmet--he uses a wide variety of materials and techniques that could inspire you for how to make your own props and armor pieces.

Look, as I've stated before, I am in no way trying to bastardize the original design and make is girly or sexy, or any crap like that. I only said "female version" because I am a girl, and I'm simply making the exact same suit, only to fit a woman. I'm sure that in the Dead Space universe there are women who have to wear things like that too, I'm just making a concept. Nothing's going to be drastically different. I'm not going as Isaac, I'm going as a possible character in that universe with the same type of gear.

I'm not entirely familiar with the character, but here's my idea:
Basically make everything the same design wise. For the breasts (I've got the opposite for mine, lol) just add a small, uh..rounded triangular shape in the breastplate piece.
For reference, this is what I'm talking about
I'm making Aqua here: http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/7756/kingdomhearts2knight2latc8.jpg
Compare with Ven here: http://img69.imageshack.us/i/kingdomhearts2knight3lase8.jpg/

Hopefully that will help or at least make sense >.>

I don't think it's "bastardizing" to make a slightly altered version of the RIG that fits better than a smaller-sized male version. If it looks like Issac's RIG shaped to fit you, rather than hanging off you like a sack, it should be ok.
