Kenney: Well, we have many plans, actually. Our cosplay projects will include The Trigun Gung-ho Guns, The Wiess Kruz boys, A Turks encore, and a possible Metal Gear Solid. If so, I'll be returning as Solid Snake exactly 1 year after his premiere at AnimeNorth2003. Ahhhh, it's so far away... We should have more conventions.

Probably something else, too, but I'm not sure what yet!

Lazy Kisa Post

Friday: FFX Yuna
Saturday: Gunner Yuna
Masq: Pop-Star Yuna (and I'll sing the song! XD)
Dance: Rave-clothes Chii
Sunday: Lazy goth 'dark' Chii...

...ok. no.

I'm going to cosplay something no one will recognize but people will say is pretty anyway.
Because I'm all about the obscure costumes. Remember two years ago, when I did X and no one knew?! Yeah. That's how it is.
So whatever I do, will be 200% more recognizable two or three years later!

There might also be MORE X, because dammit, I'm just an X-whore.

[xiola's 2 cents:]
yeah, and to match kisa's cosplay here's what i'll be cosplaying with her next year!!!111 :DD

Friday: FFX-80056 Original Gothic Lolita Yuna
Saturday: Gunner Rikku
Masq: Pop-star Rikku (it'll be a duet! whee! :DD)
Dance: candy-raver-dark-chii (to match kisa! :D)
Sunday: lazy street clothes chii (aka baggy pyjamas with no underwear! yay fanservice!)

wow, next year will be SO FUN! (/sarcasm)

... aah, unrecognizable costumes... like my Infinite Ryvius and Saiyuki Gaiden... 3 years ago! no one had a CLUE... then again, that's probably a good thing coz that Konzen costume was hella ugly and i have to redo it ;P but man, 3 years ago and Infinite Ryvius was JUST licensed! what took them so long? even though digisubs have been out for a year or two i'm sure there's still hardly anyone who'd recognize it ;_; ...well, except for the PVC-monstrosity poster girl... East&WestGaijin My friends and I might do a Trigun group. Maybe we could get together for a pic or two.

Railiens I'm from Rochester too! Where in Rochester are you? I'm in Greece. Yeah I like the three hour trip. So much shorter than to Anime Boston or Otakon. There are a few other people from Rochester in the forum, and our numbers are growing.

My cosplay junk. And for once,not likely to be changed.

-------------------------------------
Well i'm going to be part of a Samurai X trio.
Also a rather 'different' Inu-Yasha trio.
And my main costume/trio:
CLAMP
pretty
and no one will recognize it.

Kisa: We can be pretty and obscure together.

Friday - Thief King Bakura from the AE Arc of the YGO Manga

Saturday - Himemiya Anthy Rose Bride costume from Revolutionary Girl Utena

Masq/Sunday - My Excel Saga-related costume (Who is doing what in our Excel Saga group is still being worked out for the most part.)

LazyKisaPost: (last one before HOME and my own computer!!)

Yuna is cool in herself... one of the better FF girls to dress like. It's more a Kisa-knee-jerk reaction to "every goddamn time I look at the member gallery someone has a BRANDNEW Yuna, Rikku or Chii," and it's annoying when you consider... Cosplay... Japan... all you see are 3 characters. It's kind of sad really. It was cool, and then became the lowest common denominator. And they weren't before, but then EVERYONE jumped on the bandwagon and lowered them. They stopped being neat and interesting.

I mean, Christ, JAPAN... COSPLAY... there has GOT to be SOMETHING people could choose to do besides those three. SOME outfit, SOME game, SOME videogame, SOMETHING. It's like EGL, too. It's a trend, and it's just annoying, beause it's like shopping at the Gap. or... the Gap started selling all the things you liked, and then EVERYONE has them, and your not noticed for dressing interestingly anymore.

It's kind of like the Sailor Moon/Rei Ayanami fad a few years back when EVERYONE had a sailormoon outfit or a Rei outfit--to the point where there were so many you only noticed the Scary ones when a Guy dressed like Rei in her Plugsuit and didn't shave....

It's been so done, so trendy it's sickning now. Like Boy Bands. Except... not boys. And singing. Well...except PopStar Yuna...>.> But then X-2 just made it so MORE people can try to jump the gun and pick something that isn't overdone, but WILL BE in a month. Damn evil marketing techniques! I LIKE some of the YunaX-2 outfits, but... g'ha I could do that and look like 30 other people, or I could make a cactus in a cowboy hat. be one of 1923436239 FF people, or.... funny manga with tentacle-zombie-snake-rape and eye-ball fun.... I'll take the road less travelled... and not always, but..when I had the energy to do Yuna-Watch in the membergalleries... there were 8 people who did SOME version of Yuna. 2 regular, 3 gunners, 2 pop-star and a gambler....

Two years ago, when it was shiny and new, great. fine. Makes sense.
Trendy new! Breaking New Ground... Now it just seems to be about 'what everyone else is doing' 'what's fashionable in the cosplay world' and seems like high school all over again.
butbutbut...
g'ha.
(And don't even get me started on Chii..... >.< She's a whole other issue with me. LOL)

I'm just becoming insane. I haven't slept yet, since my nap at sparklecon....

Then again, I'd rather everyone do Yuna/Rikku/Chii then the characters I like, because then I don't have to worry about it being massacred (it happens anyway. sob.) or being flavour of the month. (Is stupid and anal so no one can win anyway :P)
And then of course I'd have to TALK to the people who dressed in zombie snake-rape outfits, and they would annoy me, because they wouldn't find it funny, or find eyeball trading to be amusing...

Ah. Damn Wankers. They ruin everything.

I'm thinking about doing Siren from FF8 for AN next year. Also talking about a Samurai Pizza Cats or Spirited Away group with Kaijugal....not sure which will happen or when.

The fact is, Kisa, most people are sheep. It's just a fact of life. They want to be just like everybody else. So it's up to us to make yummy MLT (mutton, lettuce and tomato) sandwiches. XD

i have horrible, horrible plans. and i'm not telling anyone what they are! XD if you know, i told you in person. i'll just say this... of all of the un-weeded plans i have:

- none are video game related
- probably only half are even anime related
- one or two are from books
- only one of them is fanservicey, but at least 2 are underage
- ... for one of them, i'll have a building on my head. ;P

aagh i'm gonna go be sick now, i accidentally bought something with nuts in it... damn allergy... >___<;;;;

Allia
09-03-2003, 04:46 PM
Lainey I agree with you. So what if hundreds of others cosplay the same character. You are cosplaying the character you like and you are showing your support and love for that character by wearing the costume. Even if I'm kinda tired of the same costume being done over and over again, everyones costume is slightly different and the people are different so to me that makes things interesting again.

xiola
09-03-2003, 07:09 PM
9_9;;; if people want to do something that lots of other people are doing, then of course there's nothing wrong with that because everyone has their own reasons. but they have to expect that people will joke about it. i mean, how many jokes are there about Canadians, and like, Star Wars fans? i mean, if it happens to be amusing and i laugh, it doesn't mean i don't love canada, or that i hate everyone who likes Star Wars. it just means that there is a generalization to be made and there are always going to be people who dislike things that are over-hyped.... take the common canadian dislike for america, for example ;PP

i'm scared of all the sewing i'll have to do for school this year -_- aaagh. no time.

09-04-2003, 01:10 AM
Ya true, I think doing a character not because itz a trend or sth, the most important thing is YOU LIKE THE CHARACTER! If you aren't interested and not even know enough of the chara and just cosplay as him/her...then watz the point?? I dunno, personally I tried to find characters I like but not soooo many people doin' it, yes, itz not wrong to have same costumes with others, but somehow I feel itz not special to cosplay as same chara with sooo many people, 2 or 3 is fine, but like 5~6...that's like too much ^^||||

appleyukari
09-04-2003, 01:12 AM
and Winnie, your Yuna costume is doing really well, I mean you did atleast 3 different Yuna costumes and that already shown that you LOVE this chara alot ^^ and you just so fit this character I just could never do as good as you guys for FF series LoL so, there's nothing wrong with cosplay as Yuna ^^

It is kind of frustrating that RED XIII is becoming more and more cosplayed....though I guess it's also a good thing, since it's spreading the Nanaki love....but still, I was one of a few and now I am one of the many. x_x;;;

As for stuff for AN '04....not a lot has been decided on.

My X cosplay plans are still a go.
Other stuff I'm considering would be:
F.Summoner or Agrias (FFT)
Leviathan
Quezacotl (FF8)
Xianghua alternate colours (SCII or SC)
Tarim alternate colours (SCII)
Sophia (SO3)
Yomi winter uniform (Azumanga Daioh)
Skuld red poster version (Ah!Megami-sama)
Yura-sama Prism outfit (Psycho le C'emu)
Teneko or Minami (Okashina Okashi)

You know what's weird? Despite the plethora of Chiis at every con, I haven't got pics with very many Chiis while in my Yuzuki costume. Or any Sumomos. =\

Vanity Fading
09-04-2003, 03:53 PM

mage: ooh you want to do OkashinaOkashi cosplay too? XD i've been thinking about cosplaying OO as one of those "i don't really have time so i shouldn't put it on the list but i want an excuse to do it" things... (and since i know her online i have bugged emi before to make more cosplayable characters and said i'd try and cosplay for it sometime, so it'd be nice to actually do it ^^;;) if you don't have someone else planning on it with you then if you ever got around to doing it too it maybe one of us could do either on the same day? :P (though i'd say i prefer minami since i look worse in black hair and prefer froufy to vinyl :p)

ya i know, that too... *cries* i have too many plans...

anyway, i think so far it looks like my plans are gonna end up something like:

con in NY in march: 2 Wraeththu-inspired outfits... if i only finish one of them then i'll bring one to rewear

Ad Astra: rewear stuff because it's too close to school to have time to make anything new anyway and not everyone there will have seen some of it

ANorth:
- (definite) evil plan for masq
- shinya hopefully
- one of the 2 Jeanne outfits i want... was gonna do one for CNA but ran out of time

TT:
- wear Eowyn coz it won't have been to a con before
- probably something on kisa and I's list of evil plans ;P
- possibly rewear Wraeththu since i don't expect i'll have time to do more than two outfits anyway

CNA:
- the other Jeanne outfit
(- possibly OO if it fits in)
- something else or a rewear.

there'll no doubt be a few things dropped for lack of time, or switched around, but... that's what it looks like at the moment, anyway.

AN Cosplaying plans, which are completely subject to change:

Mana from the AE arc of Yuugiou - group thing. XD

Dark Gunner Yuna - I've fallen in love with this costume. I <3 it muchly.

Mr K from Gravitation - another group thing. ^^ This one's a possibility at the moment

Eyes Rutherford from Spiral - newest love of anime.

But yeah, I just got into it a month or so ago and it's just so much fun to read, so I'd love to cosplay from it sometime....And I have no one else to cosplay it with me, so whenever we both have time/money/energy to fit it into our schedules, I'd love to do it with you. ^_^V

My plans so far:

Dec. Gathering of the Fellowship: Arwen BR dress

Ad Astra: rewear something, probably Morpheus

AN:
- FF8 Siren
- Spirited Away

TT:
- Bespin Leia
- K'ehleyr from TNG (with TARG! XD )

After that, not sure. I'd also like to do some comic-related stuff, like Scarlet Witch and/or Promethea...dunno if we'll be able to afford to go anywhere neat tho. After looking at this year's Dragoncon pics, I'm so nostalgic and want to go back...

CNA: if I go, just rewear stuff. I have bigger fish to fry...

Kaijugal

Too lazy to think. Tired but can't sleep. ARGH!

Halloween!! WooHoo! don't know what I'll be yet. I'm thinking Gargoyle something...

I'm also going to the Gathering of the Fellowship in December. I wanted to be a goblin but I've decided to try and be an Ent. (One of those big tree guys).

I never have made the Ad Astra Masq, I'd like to go but I'm not sure. No definate plans as of yet.

Of course I'll be at Anime North again, barring accident or injury. After a 3 year hiatus I actually plan to enter the masquerade again. The subject is Spirited Away.

Toronto Trek... that's a secret ;) But it will be FUN :D :D :D

I love books. <more then most anime>
I love fantasy.

Costume wise...
Sabriel, in abhorsen gear.
Or Darian in Tayledras gear

leaning towards Sabriel though..

Ad Astra is a small but super friendly con. :) Highly recommended by Gord too. :bigtu: The only reason I haven't been going all these years is it's always right around Valentines Day, and we me being a florist, I can never take the time off work. I just saw Scrapped Princess. I'm in love. *_* However, I can't decide if Shannon or Raquel has a nicer character design. *_*

Also saw snow fairy sugar for the first time and, despite the fact that i just about collapsed from the cuteness, the male season fairies seem really neat. They call to me. O_o;;;

So yeah, my costume plans may change. ^_^;;;;

Oh! Good news! I went to a SOAP meeting (Society for Ottawa Anime Promotion) tonight and found out where the nearest fabricland is and got directions for getting there....so my cloak will be started soooooooooonnnn!!!! *can't wait*

Ugg... hopefully not around Exams... >.<
Then again, I have Lunacon to think about...

Maybe the Gathering, as Frodo, if I decide to re-make my Broadcloth pants >.> or Xio and I will do an "anti-Gathering but still in costume" movie premiere where I can wear my broadcloth pants.
Mostly I worry about getting annoyed, because I wasn't a fan of the books, and I can only handle so much fangirling over the actors...

Lunacon in NY to stallk my favourite author of all time, and she's so special, she gets a costume I've already started working on,( #$*^#&#%^$# YOU 30$ of TRIM ON SALE!) and maybe TWO if I'm feeling Fancy.

AdAstra: If it doesn't interfear with my Exams (I'm a graduating this year!! XD) .... I have No idea yet, but Maybe Sandman's Daniel/NewDream and most likely re-wear stuff, since that crowd wont have seen any of my costumes :P Also, possibly one of my Bad Idea costumes... Oh god. Insomnia and physical, emotional exhaustion does wonders when you're contemplating costumes... Most likely re-wear my Lunacon Wraeththu costume.

AN: Super Secret Masq. Plans XD
at *least* one X costume. Probably two... just because one is almost finished.

Toronto Trek: Super Secret Masq. Plans x2! XD

Ad Astra?
wat kind of con is it?

As Atsra is a literary based Science Fiction convention that has been going on since I started attending cons in th early 80's.

Smaller? Yes ... it is currently on a regrowth cycle after some very lean times in the 90's.

Costuming? I know they are trying to get a costuming track of programming together (maybe contact them through the link below and show interest in this). They also have a masquerade ... which is also on a growth cycle at the moment.

Anime friendly? They have an anime room that (I think) runs 24 hours and is operated by some of the same people who do the anime rooms at other cons in the city. As for programming, I can't say how much is anime-oriented.

Guests? They have great taste in guests ... of course I'm biased cuz I'm the FGoH next year. ;) They don't usually have anime guests because there hasn't been a lot of you showing up at this con. I'm sure if they know a large number of fans would come, they'd try and get some anime-based guests (probbaly more along the authour line or artists).

Mood? *sigh* Ad Astra tends to attract an older audience than Anime North. (Or even Toronto Trek for that matter... although by a smaller margin.) So ... will people understand what you're cosplaying as? I doubt it (heck ... I don't know more than half the time!). Do people wear hall costumes or "cosplay" during the day? Yes. There is a community of LARPs in the area, many of whom attend the con in costume. Again, this number will be smaller than what you get at AN or SFX. Will they accept you? Most likely. Most of them are willing to play with anyone.

What about the fact that it doesn't have an anime focus? Well ... I can't do anything about that. Nor can you ... for this year at any rate. But I think it would be a valuable asset in your fandom development if any of the talented costumers on this board wanted to come and maybe expand their horizins. It's an opportunity to see what a con looks like that harkens back to the silver age of cons. You can experience a general SF con that tends to be relaxed ... accepting ... fun ... and did I mention the paties? (Keep in mind that, being a somewhat older con, certain aspects of the social scene may not be to everyone tastes ... including your parents!)

Should you go? I think yes ... even if it's just to take in a good old con where you can just sit back and enjoy yourself without the stress of changing costumes every two hours ... of course, you'll want to enter the masquerade, right? ;)

Here's their site, currently not updated from 2003 (ubt at least you can see something as to what the con is about):

Ad Astra Science Fiction Convention (http://www.ad-astra.org)

BTW - Kaijugal and (I believe) Sarcasm-Hime have attended previously too.

Updated my costumes for Novembercon:

-Secret Alichino costume >3 complete with at least 1 skanky ninja

-And mah skankeh techno Kamui <complete with superposable asian fuma man!>
YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE xD

As for AN.. Masq plan is still secret too.
But as for hints.. it WILL be CLAMP, there WILL be Bisho.. and it is *NOT* X.
And i've never seen it cosplayed before either, not the easier character uniforms or the ensembles we'll have.

Yay for obscurity!

Ad Astra is a small but super friendly con. :) Highly recommended by Gord too. :bigtu: The only reason I haven't been going all these years is it's always right around Valentines Day, and we me being a florist, I can never take the time off work. They've moved the date to April which is much better, so chances are I'll see you there. :)

I work at a florist too...and Valentine's is NUTSO no matter how the economy is! LOL

But yes...
it might possiblly interfere with my exams but we shall see.

BOOOO. I miss conventions. I do, so much, and all the planning...and everything....

And I have so many costumes that I want to make, and no where to wear them to. That's worse. I am taking a convention hiatus, I guess...and then it's into school.

But if I were going to AN04, I would rewear my BT costume because I like it so much (wow, it will be almost 2 years old by then!), Judy from Cowboy bebop (because it didnt get finished for 03), and either Suzuka from outlaw star (because that also isnt finished >.<), or a Belldandy costume *gasp* (not to worry, not her usual outfit).

Also becoming obsessed with Atelier Marie characters, Grolanser, and Urd. Oh, and More Magna Carta (because I wanna rewear Adora, dammit!) or WOG.... or other fancy video games....

I do have a costume planned for TT, though I will not get to make it for another 2 or 3 years. And one for Ad Astra that would get reworn.

Oh, to be in the GTA and have costuming friends!!! Take photos!

I wish I could have chatted more with you, Dawn, and Sarcasm, too, and everyone else.... (not that you have any clue who I am right now...)

Babbling. Gotta go. Missed GTO and the finale for Waterboys. T.T

we don't want some one with the same costume as us in the masq, OR we wanna suprise every one with our costumes.

I just like having a big suprise when I finally get to show off my masq costumes <3 And I like being evil and only letting a select few know waht mine is. All I'm saying is mine has been on my backbuner for 2 years now, it's going to cost a fortune, use over 100 meters of material, and I will be completely out of my normal choice in characters for it :X

How do you university people do it?!?!

Mm.... Winnie, since I was confused at CNA... be sure to e-mail me some pics of it.

It's funny becuase it's a complete reversal from the previous trend people had of listing all the costumes they wanted to do to make sure no one did the same one. Hm. EESH! 100 meters!!! I'm of two minds about the costume lists...

On one hand, finding out that another cosplayer is doing the same costume as me kind of dampens my enthusiasm if it's a character that I assumed would be rather unique. For example, if I'd known there'd be another RED XIII at Anime North '02, I probably would have put that costume off (well, except that I had a group thing planned...lol)

On the other hand, I like to look forward to costumes that I really want to see, but am not cosplaying myself. Also, if there are people cosplaying from the same series as I am, I'd love to arrange to get some duo/group pictures with them, but I wouldn't be able to do that if I didn't know that there were people cosplaying that series.

I list most of my costumes now unless I think Winnie wants me to shut up about them. :P For now they're all just ideas, so it doesn't matter. ^_^

My costume plans... are currenty mostly unknown X_x;;
I do know I'm wearing Roy (FE6,SSBM) to go with Chobrat's Marth ;D And I'll have a real metal Sword of Seals, which I hear actually won't be a problem at AN?
Besides that... probably Yondaime/4th Hokage from Naruto... and whatever else I may have by then. *shrug*

What I have avaliable to wear should be... Tidus, BlackMage (revamped), Rufus, Shuyin, Link (Wind Waker), Wizard (RagnarokOnline), Izumo/Chuunin Examiner (Naruto), Shadow (SA2)... and that's all I can think of, so if anyone needs me for something... >.>

ANIME NORTH WEAPON POLICY

Real weapons and realistic copies of currently manufactured firearms are strictly prohibited. Please note: realistic model guns and "ninja" weapons such as "nunchukas" and "shurikens" are not only unwelcome at Anime North, but illegal under the Criminal Code of Canada. If your weapon is deemed unacceptable, you will be asked to leave it in your hotel room, or turn it over to security until you leave.

All prop/model weapons MUST be peace-bonded by Anime North Security
staff, meaning fastened down in such a way that they cannot be drawn. If you plan to wear a weapon as part of a hall costume, report to the Security Office so they can peace bond it for you.

Allowances may be made for contestants to perform with weapons during the Masquerade, but you MUST ask permission from the Masquerade Director beforehand.

Drawing of weapons, horseplay or careless handling of weapons in public areas are not allowed and will result in loss of membership and expulsion from the convention.

Laser pointers are not harmless toys, they are capable of inflicting serious eye damage. Irresponsible use of a laser pointer will result in loss of membership and expulsion from the convention.

Water guns and projectiles are not allowed in convention space, any use of them in public will result in loss of membership and removal from the convention. All involved parties will be required to pay the cost of any property damages suffered by individuals, dealers or the hotel.
Many conventions have banned weapons altogether because of problems, we
hope to avoid that with the cooperation of our attendees.

Costume plans! Eeeep.

The Gathering - Smaug (at whatever stage of completion I happen to be at in December); Shieldmaiden Eowyn (again. I love that costume).

Ad Astra - no idea, yet. I'd love to do a Hunter costume (from Neverwhere), but I so don't have the right complexion to pull it off. Will think about this one. Also depends on timing, as April is when I will *hopefully* be getting ready to defend my thesis.

Anime North - I'd like to attempt Matsulika from Alichino. No confirmed plans yet, though, I've been invited to join only one other group for a masquerade skit, so no idea what I'll do for that, though I'll definitely enter in some capacity. Will probably re-wear some things in the halls, as I'd like to focus energy/time/funds on only a couple of costumes per year.

Toronto Trek - in all hopes, Smaug will be done by then! Once again, probably will re-wear things as hall costumes.

CNA/SFX - blargh.

:(

currently my anime north is still looking like:
- Jeanne costume 1 from Shaman King (making her other outfit later)

kisa: yeah, but *kim*...*coughs* anyway, it's not as if i have time to make anything uneccessary for AN, since i already hate making more than 2 costumes per con and i have 3... ^^;;

i don't think you have any other obligations with ME for AN other than our evil X plans, since i barely have time for my own plans... but if i find a way to make my clamp monstrosity it'll take awhile to make it GOOD...

but if you have time and need a relatively non-stressful-but-cute costume to do with someone you could make the Anna-robes (the short ones with the flower painting and getta) outfit and do Shaman King with me~ *^^* ...coz even tho Anna never hangs out with Jeanne, it's the same series...

hehe i love how in my crappy bootleg subs they keep translating "Iron Maiden" as "Iron Girl", because they don't understand that an Iron Maiden is a thing and not a person. although it's not quite as amusing as the Great Spirit being "the Fairy King" and Horo worrying that Ren was suffering from "Blood Poverty" XDD

AHHH! I was going to post, and had written a big long thing, but my internet hates me and ate my message. dammit.

Cho: Wearing a properly non-ghetto version of Ashura is definitivly a possibility for AN this year. My Masq. plans are going to take up all of my resources, so I'm going cosplay-lite this year for hall costumes. One of the major ones I want to do, will look like street clothes and will be made AS street clothes, so I can wear it any time! XD and the other will have elements of street clothes so my wardrobe expands in cuteness...
So, yeah. I might just have to go Dark!Ashura, and now that I found a way to do the blood-splatter for the effect I want, (glossy and wet-like, but NOT wet!) I might just have to be Dark!Ashura on a rampage.

Sarcasm: I know the angst too well. I've already commited to doing a brilliantly written skit with the worse ideas ever (dismemberment and eyeballs WILL be included) and then well... Big H was just a project of mine that I wanted to do and the timing worked out that other people wanted to do similar...
You could always do Siren and contrubute to the insanity by making a handful of cow-spirits, since although their more plain, they're all the same and few could be made fairly easily and cheaply, and could be worn by random people we enslave to be cosplay accessories... and then you could do something with Siren...

Damn this "only allowed on stage once" rule!! In practice, it's actually Logical, but it's frustrating when you have more then one brilliant idea....

Chosuke

Kisa: That would be gorgeous. The version of 'young' Ashura <from beneath the snowy tree picture> i'm doing involves ALOT of bronzecasting, resin and a plexiglass sword. Other then that,the actual sewing is very simple.. though I WILL be using a most time-period myth-authentic pattern for it, made by my aunt. My favorite part of the whole costume I would have to say will be the 'airbrushing my whole body for countless hours' the gold contacts and the shinny-ass bells xD!
We need dark ashura/ young ashura/sexy yasha smut xD I want to get smudged with blood too! xD Not to mention 'lets impale Yasha-ou' pics xD

but yes, I want to enter twice..especially with my X 'telephone operators of the apocalypse' xD

Kisa

Oh Sure. Like I'm going to wear anything and look crappy next to your overkill. You just WANT me to look worse so you can boast a better Ashura.
Booo-urns I say. Booo-urns.

Hummm. After looking thru my cosplay book, I'm a bit concerned about the RO mage that I want to do for AN. To make it look right, I really want to make the top of the staff out of sheet brass, but it has all these points and sharp edges on it....and I'm afraid con security wouldn't let me walk around with it, even if I file the points and edges so they're not sharp. Which would kinda defeat the whole purpose of it being a hall costume. -.-;; Dunno what I'm going to do...

At the moment, the list of spring projects includes: Street-wear Belldandy; Cage Toshiya & Shinya; Yokan Kyo; Madame Batolli/Bara no Saidou Mana (two costumes for the price of one!); and Sophitia.

*Finally* have my AN04 costume choice nailed down, and I have to admit I'm not really sorry to say that's its probably one of those overdone costumes that no one should ever do again. (In large part because I don't need to wear a wig. :P)

I'm doing Ranma female for the con, as a part of a Ranma 1/2 group. Can't remember the name of the other characters being cosplayed, as I don't know the series very well yet, but I get the impression its a good mix.

Yes, I decided on an Ent after kicking around ideas for an ent or balrog costume. I figured an ento would be more original as I don't imagine too many people will try and make one. It's always fun to make a costume of something you enjoy as well. :) I think I'll get a big kick out of being an ent as long as the costume isn't too frustraiting. LOL! (imagines the type of construction required and cringes) :D

Thank you for the well wishes. With the deadline fast approaching, I require all the good karma I can get. :)

As for the gathering itself, I can hardly wait to see what other people are wearing. Especially so many people from these costume message boards who I have become aquainted with . It sounds like so many people here, (and locally) have very impressive plans. :)

It always astounds me how people can make a costume in a few hours. I'm doing my original EGL right now, and I did a muslin, then cut underlining for the fabric as it was a bit flimsy, now pinning and basting the bodice together....takes so much time!

Well, I'm putting together two groups for myself, my honey and my best friend for Anime Boston - and you guessed it, neither honey nor BF can sew on a button. I can't expect them to learn how to sew just because I want to do a group - it's not important to them, so I do the sewing. I do it because if you're there with friends, it's not as much fun if you're the only one cosplaying.

xiola

i'm with sarcasm-hime... if i have 3 costumes for a con i can BARELY finish them, and usually don't, and for most cons i can barely finish two. i can't make a decent costume in less than a day either, unless it's meant to be a last-minute scrap-together with mostly-bought stuff and unfinished seams. and even if i had no school i wouldn't have the *energy* to make stuff that fast. and yeah, i make patterns from scratch and muslin mockups of most of my good costumes, and pin everything like hell when i sew and it takes me a long time for everything too.

also, i can't deal with sewing stuff for other people unless i'm just helping them out and they're making the main effort, because it just means less work i can put into my OWN costume since it's using the same time frame... if they want a costume they can make one themself, i'll just help them if they mess up and need help.

i'd also worry if i had to make stuff for someone else theirs would either end up way better than mine and i'd be really bitter the whole time about having to skimp on my own costume :P or else i'd just neglect theirs and feel bad for making someone else a crappy costume, and neither of those is good... :P

but i'm just antisocial and not crazy like you people ;P

I'm considering the following...one of them.

Zaphkiel from Angel Sanctuary...provided if there's actually an AS group that's going to show up and rezognize me...T_T I do look a lot like Zaphkiel down to the glasses (and on a scarier note, act like him...) but he's one of those manga-only people...and not a lot of people read the manga.

Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist...very new title, the anime's coming out in Japan in October...I suppose if I give my hair highlights and beat up anybody that calls me shorty that'll do.

And Hao from Shaman King...yet again it'll be nice if I have a group to stick around with.

That's it for now...if all else fails I think I still have my monocle and Jeep somewhere around...

I'm incredibally anal about detailing and construction too, all my costumes for AN last year took 40+ hours a piece and I still managed to make 4, 5 if you include killer cause she took like 40 hours her self >_<

I make every thing for my costumes, including the patterns. All my Toshiya costumes, minus Taiyo cause I whipped that out the night before TT, take at least 40 hours of work and I have 4 of them for AN. I force my self to work on them instead of dicking around and not doing any thing, and I still manage to do other things. I just orginize my self well I guess. Or maybe it's the fact that I can whip out patterns that fit me in a couple of hours?

I've only poped out 4 costumes in 4 days, but they were the Digi Charat ones we did so their not *that* complecated to begin with. I spent like 20 hours just sewing the lace to the costumes @_@;;;

I think it all depends on the person, I can work non stop on costumes even if I don't wanna be doing them. I use to make like 20 costumes a con for my cosplay group, but now it's like a costume per year for Paris. I don't mind sewing for Paris, becasue she tries to help, unlike the other memebrs of me cosplay group.

hehe... my problem is that if i'm doing something for me, as opposed to something that's a job, i have to be *somewhat* happy while doing the work or i won't do it. :P so it takes forever coz i'm lazy.

(and well, i can make a good pattern in a couple hours, ask kisa, it's just that it requires alot of standing around with rulers above large pieces of paper, and it hurts my back, coz i'm lazy, so i don't actually work on it STEADILY for the 3 hours straight it would take to make it all and trace out the tissues if i was actually working diligently... so instead it takes like 2 weeks. -_-;;)

even though technically the hours spent on it is not neccessarily as long, often once i have the pieces cut out, i feel like i'm halfway done already, coz i hate that part. i like the part where i start being able to SEE what i'm making, i guess. :P

whee must go to sleep now, coz i have a pattern drafting test AND a sewing test tommorow lucky me! i have to do TESTS on these things! ...-_-;; (it wouldn't be nearly so bad if you didn't have to do everything THEIR way. but that's how tests are. for drafting they usually give you a pic of an ugly dress, with no instructions, and you have to figure out the proper methods that would create thepattern that would make that dress, and draft the pattern. then you trace out the tissue patterns of all the pieces, and you have to remember all the different seam allowances (yes, every side has different seam allowances -_-) too and add it to the tissues. then the sewing, they give you cut pieces, and a drawing of what it looks like when it's done, and no instructions, and you have to do it exactly the way they want it and ^^;;) it's not that hard but i hate tests. urgh. need sleep.

I'm like that.
I usually make my costumes in one sitting.
Not because i'm particularly talented or fast, but because one I start something I feel like I HAVE to finish it. I've never been able to spread the work out over a month or anything, its usually just done ten hours at a time or whatever.
The longest it's taken me to finish a costume was Haku,which took a week partially because I had to harass my friends mom for her sewing machine and partially because it was my first costume and I kept screwing up.

I mean, it's not like I have a job or tons of ahrd university work to keep me from making it. I'm a slacking highschool kid with too much time on her hands anyway!
I'm estimating that.. these five costumes together will take about...
Kouga/Haku- ten hours
Okita - ten
RG Veda - thirty <so many ny pieces of jewelery to be cast x.x>
Masq - 40+
Myaku Die- 20

so putting that all together and remembering I have nothing better to do with my time, its not that much.
Only problem is the cost.

Yeah...I can spend hours on a costume, but the sheer complexity of some of them means that the work is spread out over weeks and weeks. But I'm also lazy by nature, so if confronted with a piece of the costume I'm not looking forward to tackling, I'll procrastinate.

Yarrrr...I need to learn pattern drafting. For simple things I can make my own, but I don't think I could come up with a complex or close-fitting pattern from scratch. Not without draping, anyways, which kind of negates the whole point of drafting. I bought one of those fitting-shell muslin pattern thingies so that I can just start from that whenever I need to draft something. ^_^:;

On the up side, last night I finished my first real, proper set-in sleeves! And they look and fit great! Whee!

Aiya...I've only been absent from the board for a day and I missed a hell of a lot of posts. X_x;

I take a while to make most of my costume because I ALWAYS get to some stage where I'm like "I should do this...but...but...omg, I don't want to touch the fabric...I'm going to mess it up..." especially if it's a pattern I've made from scratch. You'd never believe it, but Embla took forever simply because it took me a long while to get the pattern to work out right for whatever reason and I had to do several prototypes before I was remotely satisfied with anything. -_-;

Oh, and then there was Xianghua. See, I suck at painting and once that fabric paint touches the fabric, it's all over. You can't imagine the paranoia. x_x;;;

In any case, I've been working hard on Agrias this month and she's coming along alright, but I really feel like I need to be more productive. Her armour is going to take forever, especially since I'm still considering what sort of materials to construct it out of. I'm thinking I might try something new, since people keep talking about this 'paperclay' business and some of the in-progress pics I'm seeing on here in the member galleries look really nifty!

But yeah, it takes me months to finish any costume, which is why I find myself really stressed out during the summer because, even if I have no classes, I don't always spend all of that free time working on costumes and, with only a couple months between AN and CNA, I can't afford to take too many days away from sewing. I think my fastest costume job was Chelsea Rorec, but that was because I only needed to make gloves, armbands, overskirt, vest, giant bow, etc. and it was all loose. But it looked like crap, so never again. ^_^V

The other costumes that didn't take that long were Yuzuki (the first time through) and my FFX Aeon costume. But Yuzuki was re-done so many times that version 1 was pretty much a prototype (the wig was just being started at the time) and I worked literally non-stop for a week on the Aeon costume, so total hours amounted to a lot.

Winnie, don't forget that the boys try their best too...this year they will learn how to sew, right? :) And still have time to make the props. :) The sad thing is, if Brian *hadn't* helped me with his blacksmith costume...I might've actually got it done, simply because I'm more efficient. XP

"The sad thing is, if Brian *hadn't* helped me with his blacksmith costume...I might've actually got it done, simply because I'm more efficient. XP"

hahaha i know exactly what you mean... i tried to help this boy i know to learn to sew his own thing last year, and he did, and did a good job, except he could only manage to remember how to do it while i was around to answer questions and show him stuff, and had to use my sewing machine to do it, so it ended up taking so much longer than if i'd just made it for him myself. but i hate doing that on principle if they actually want to learn. but the problem is i want them to learn and then leave me alone... ;PP

sarcasm, my school has night courses in sewing so it might have classes in pattern drafting...? i'm not sure if you have to sign up for the whole program to take them though, but i assume you don't neccessarily have to, because there i see alot of older people taking them. (it's at the casaloma area campus, near dupont subway)

(as for speediness... i'm so screwed. you'd think school would make me FASTER at this shit, but it only makes me too tired to do my own work -_- this is what i have to do for WEDNESDAY, and none of it is even for me:
a) draft an entire pattern for the dress i've designed for school
b) trace out every piece in tissue, then add seam allowance. which pretty much takes just as long as drafting because tracing huge things really accurately is fucking annoying
c) cut it all out in muslin
d) sew the muslin, complete with facings, piping and zippers.
e) finish the draft of ANOTHER pattern, which we were given the instructions for and everyone's is supposed to turn out the same
f) trace out the individual pieces for THAT pattern
g) buy all the fabric and notions on a specific budget, keeping all the reciepts for proof.

i'm going to die. *cries* i suppose it's better than having to write 25 page essays, but god, i'm so lazy it hurts. -_-

anyway, complaining is bad, sorry. i'm only doing it coz here people actually know what i'm TALKING about, where most people i know just have to go "yeah... mm hmm? i have... no idea what you're talkign about. ^^;;" when i complain about school. ^^'' )

On the up side, last night I finished my first real, proper set-in sleeves! And they look and fit great! Whee!

is that not the GREATEST feeling in the world?! I've done them maybe three times without screwing them up and having to re-do them five times, but damn, each time I get a sleeve and I can go "OH GOD!! I DID IT! I DID IT!!" it makes me feel *fantastic*
My proudest moment was putting in Cain's Suit-Jacket sleeves properly, without mistakes, the very first time!

It's kind of sad when you think about it really....

Oh, and then there was Xianghua. See, I suck at painting and once that fabric paint touches the fabric, it's all over. You can't imagine the paranoia. x_x;;;

Now this I'd like to hear more about. I wanted to do one of Hokuto's outfits a while back, but decided that a striped circle skirt was impossible, so didn't. :)

Yeah, I was kinda stumped for awhile. Basically I saw it as one of two choices--to do a gathered skirt from a long rectangle, or cut wedges and have chevrons at the seams. I decided that I'd do the wedges as I prefer the look of a smooth circle skirt to a gathered waistband...also, I decided the chevron pattern of the stripes meeting at the seams would be kind of neat. I'm doing the same thing for the lower sleeves, which will also be full circles.

So what I've done is measure out and divide the circle into wedge sections, then cut out identical wedges making sure the stripes are in exactly the same place on each wedge so that they'll meet up in perfect 'V's at the seams. Theoretically, at least. *lol*

I'm hoping to wear the dress for Halloween...I won't have the matching custom dread-falls I want by then, but I can at least wear the dress. ^_^;

Xiola, so are you at George Brown? Hmm, I'll have to see if any drafting classes will fit into my schedule...^_^

I know that feeling too.
When you WNAT to do it, but your just so afraid you might mess the pretty fabric up..oo;;
I had to paint the front of my Son-Goku smock with the symbol and my hand was trembling.

I had drafted the design twice over, but I was still too nervous to pain it because the edges might be smudged and look ghetto oo;;
So I stared at it for a while and left ittil last, and then..I just painted the stencil I had used to trace it onto the fabric,made it into a stamp and it was done..oo;;

But man. I was practically going weak at the knees.

You don't need us to find you the pattern. All you do is go to Fabricland, find their pattern catalogues (ie. Butterick, Simplicity, McCall's, etc...) and flip through the pages until you find a pattern that looks like the one you want. You'll probably have to do minor altering to it though, because I can guarentee that you won't find a page that says "Soul Calibur 2: Cassandra" on it, so you'll have to use your imagination and your brain to figure out what will work.

As for what everyone else is talking about, I'm building my Rouge coat pattern from scratch right now, it's not the first time I've built my own pattern, but I've never played around with a coat before. I'm deathly afraid of getting to the actual cutting out part because I busted the bank on the beautiful fabric for it and if I end up messing it up and having to pay another +$80 for more I think I'll cry.

that's what muslins or mock-ups are for. you cut everything out of crappy fabric first, including at least one sleeve, and sew it up (no seam finishing or anything, but sew all the seam lines), then you see it if fits and looks right. if it doesn't, you can alter it on the muslin, and then see how you have to fix the pattern before cutting it out of the GOOD fabric. it's a pain, but my fear of wrecking good fabric is why i make muslins... ^^;;

RE: painting: this only helps a bit, but if what you're worried about is messy edges, if you're using flat paint, and flat fabric with no shiny/texture finish, you CAN use matching colour paint as "whiteout" at the edges of your design, very sparingly for messy edges. it makes the edges look cleaner around any small problems, just don't do it around the whole thing and it doesn't show. i did this in places on my Yoh shirt and i love how it looked in the end, i don't think anyone could tell there are touch-ups:
http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=39607&password=&sort=1&cat=3760&page=1

RE: set-in sleeves: i think i'm weird. for some reason i am so much more comfortable making shirts than anything else, i'm like the only one... o.O;; almost everyone at school last year said the shirt sample was WAY harder than the pants and skirt, but i fucking HATED the pants more than anything, and loved the shirt. i mean, they have more seams and details and everything, but i think it's because they're a manageable size, and i like smaller details, whereas skirts and pants are these huge chunks of fabric that are a pain. and i hate waistbands! i don't know why, but i hate waistbands so much more than set-in sleeves. i'm actually *good* at set-in sleeves, but waistbands *still* annoy me! this seems strange. O_o;;;

Kaijugal

Only 5.....lol. 2 or 3 costumes per con is a lot for me...but then I'm really really fussy about details so I can't just churn the costumes out. It always astounds me how people can make a costume in a few hours. I'm doing my original EGL right now, and I did a muslin, then cut underlining for the fabric as it was a bit flimsy, now pinning and basting the bodice together....takes so much time!

Or maybe it's just that I'm lazy. *lol*

I'm more of the 4 cons to one costume type myself. The last couple of years I've just being enjoying seeing what other people create :) This is the year I have to get my skates on and make a few again however. :) Ah.. the bug has already bitten. :)

Xiola: I was thinking about making a mock up, but when I asked my costuming prof. about it she said that because I'm working with a stretchy fabric it really wouldn't help. I'm still not sure if it's a safe idea, but I can understand why the fit of a muslin copy and the stretchy final version would be different anyway.
Any suggestions?

xiola
10-10-2003, 05:13 PM
well if you're *using* the fact that it's stretchy (ie, if it's tight-fitting and you NEED it to stretch for the fit to work) then yeah the fit would be different. if you just have a stretchy fabric because you liked the fabric and you're not actually using the stretch, you can make the muslin out of normal fabric, and just remember that stretchy fabric will be a bit more drapey. (aside - if you want to make it less drapey and less stretchy, you can always interface it.)

(also, is it stretchy because it's a knit, or is it stretchy like "stretch denim" type fabrics, where it's not *super* stretchy, and it's still a weave, but it just stretches some because they put some lycra or spandex into it? because if i'ts like that you can just treat the fit like a normal fabric and the extra stretch just adds comfort)

if you ARE using the stretch to make it fit, what i'd suggest is just go to your cheapest fabric store and buy cheap knit (stretchy) fabric that's approximately the same stretchiness, and make the mockup out of that instead of regular woven (non-stretchy) fabric. it costs a bit of money, but it's considerably cheaper than having to buy extra of the expensive fabric.

that's my suggestion, anyway... ^^

Kia
10-10-2003, 05:31 PM
It's stretch velvet. I've never worked with it before, so it makes me confused. I'd like it to be fitted, but it's not supposted to be like a catsuit or anything, so I don't intend to have it cutting off my circulation because it's so tight.
I've attached what I'm attempting to make (the female version), so you get the idea what the coat *should* look like.

Like Xiola said, your muslin doesn't have to made of 'muslin' per se. Do a mockup version in a cheap fabric that has a similar weight and stretch to your good fabric. So if the finished outfit will be in stretch velvet, get some cheap stretchy fabric for the mockup.

I'm a newbie here, so no one knows who I am.....
anyway! This year at AN I was Yuna, but I had a lot of hair/costume issues...... I posted recently about finding more pics from the con, too, in case anyone recognizes me. Probably not, though. I spent most of the con either in hiding or in the washroom attempting to rescue my hair.

For AN '04 I'm thinking of wearing both my Yuna costumes (hopefully with better hair, and not looking sick.)
...and making Sephiroth's costume from Advent Children if I have any money left after sewing machine and car repairs.

Well welcome to the site Infini!

I know what you mean about sewing machine repairs, they are so expensive, its not even funny.

xiola
10-11-2003, 03:00 PM
ugh i'm so worried about not having time for my costumes this year...

but as for repairs, get a singer~ i get my singer sewing machine tuned up maybe every 2 years, and it's usually 50$ for the general cleaning, and then if there's extra parts it's usually about 50$ more but it's only needed that ONCE. but for once every 2 or 3 years that's not very bad, and it's only needed the actual repair once. i dont' think mine has been cleaned in over 2 years and the only thing wrong with it is that the spring on the presser foot is going, which isn't all that big a deal...

i have to say, really, get your sewing machine taken in for cleaning at least every 2years and you'll probably have far less repairs in the long run.

[warning: gratuitous "everyone should have a singer" promo:]
singers are pretty reliable in general. but watch out about kenmores :/ basically they have different models every year and some are ok and some are terrible, BECAUSE what they do is sell new un-market-tested models of sewing machines for lesser-name companies by selling them under the kenmore name >_< that's bad. there are some good ones sometimes of course, but there's no trust factor at all.

i have umm... 3 singer products now ^^;;, that are 40+ yrs, 12 yrs and 1 yr old, and they all work fine. my parents just bought a used singer industrial that's probably at least 40 years old and still works (technically an early christmas present - i'm the 3rd owner, so my dad is getting it tuned up to be safe but it works absolutely fine) the regular home sewing machine was the one my mother bought at least 12 years ago, and it's doing fine - it's been cleaned twice and has only had one adjustment and one repair in all that time. the serger is newish (birthday present) so i can't say, but it's been good. i've never really known anyone who hated their singer sewing machine, but i've known lots who hated their sewing machines... :P

yeah ok, ignore me. i just don't trust kenmores, and i like my sewing machine, i'll shut up now.

(of course, if you're going all crazy, husquavarna (sp?) are TOP of the line, but they're crazy expensive :P)

I just bought a Singer today with a desk for $35. Now I have three silly machines and nowhere to put any of them.

Is anyone from waterloo/kitchener/cambridge/guelph area here? I'm looking for a fabric store that sells imitation leather, and none of the ones I regularly go to have anything but really stiff vinyl. Just wondering if anyone has seen anything that I missed.

Gotta go find some wig stores now.

len's mill store!

they usually have a alot of random pleather/vinyl of varying quality, but i'm going by the one that's in waterloo (there's at least 3 len's mill stores in the area). their selection is never consistant, but they have more than most places in that area, and *defenitely* for a better price. the only other place in K-W i've seen it is fabricland, and they have VERY seasonal selections (usually none) and quite overpriced, so it's not worth it unless they have exactly what you need on sale.

they have crappy hours though, so go on a thursday or friday if you need to go in the evening, otherwise theyll be closed.
(btw, singer with a desk as in, the antique kind where it folds INTO the desk, or the big huge 500 pound metal-table kind(industrial)? man the industrial ones are heavy and loud -_- but they're strong as hell, and we use them at school ^^;; man, i want one of those antiques folding desk ones like my grandma had, but my aunt took that one... ;_;)

oh! RE: WIGS - if you're in K-W area and looking for wigs, defenitely the best place to go is Mavis. they're only open till 5 or 5:30, but they have more selection of costume wigs than anywhere else in K-W, and normal/decent prices (most of the decent costume wigs are probably like $20 to $50). i think it's on Princess Street in Uptown Waterloo. the older lady who works there is kind of crazy, but they're really nice :P

:bigtu: Although I have a Morse, (All metal and my favorite machine, unfortunately parts are becoming scarce!), I feel that I must add a comment regarding Kenmore sewing machines. I have owned 2 Models of Kenmore Sewing machines in the last 10 years. Both times they required repair Sears replaced them on the spot, no questions asked, and at no additional cost. I feel the need to comment on that AWSOME customer service, :bigtu: particularly considering how hard I am on machines! I have to agree with xiola about the good quality of Singer machnies but I'll have a Kenmore and Sears will have my buisness for a long time yet.

My 2 kenmores are really old (one is all metal, and something on the motor is slipping...) but it has been great for the past 20 years (my mom used it for 10 yrs before I got into cosplay). The other one is a few years or more newer, and has some plastic on it. I just got it a couple of months ago for $10.

The singer is a newer one, I think. It isn't a fold-into-the-table type, and has the electric pedal. I haven't tried it yet, so it might not even work! haha!

Hm.....should I make a Sesshoumaru costume first, or Sephiroth? I can't decide.

I was hoping you wouldn't say len's mill. I used to work there, and it didn't exactly end well. I guess the one in K-W would be okay to try, since I won't go anywhere near the one in Cambridge. And I'll be checking out that Mavis place as soon as I can.
Thanks for the suggestions!

How thick of pleather do you want? If you want really heavy stuff like table clothish leather then go to fabricland on weber, they have a nice selection. if you want more weariblt lether ther is really nince quality stuff (in red only) at Kitchener textiles on strage st. there is also Bouclair, but they charge $15-30 a meter. Theres also Hong Kong fashions that has a select few types ot pleather.

Your best bet would be to hit the fashion district in Toronto, they have a much nicer selection of plather up there. plus they have belt buckles which you can not find in KW any where >_<;;;;;

yeah, if you want anything REALLY specific, you kinda have to go to toronto... and look at like 20 stores at once ;P it's so tiring.

the len's mill in waterloo is fine ^^;; it's dusty and all, but they have a large random selection of stuff.

as for kenmores, sears DOES have good customer service, but that still doesnt' mean their machines are *consistent*. like... there are good kenmores but i'd never ever suggest that someone buy one, because their models are different every year and there's no way to know whether it'll be a good machine or a horrible machine, and there's no consistency to any of the parts or functions either! i mean... that's just annoying, and if they have to replace it rather than repair it, it's more of a disposable machine than anything, and i'd hazard a guess that the reason they replace the machines instead of repairing them is just because since their machines are so inconsistent they probably don't have a knowledgable enough repair guy to do anything helpful. which is annoying.

i've known like 3 people with kenmores, 2 from the late 70's and one from early 90's and they've all been trouble at some point. my mother had a kenmore from the 70's and it was nothing but trouble and needed to be fixed like twice a year and never did a particularly good job to begin with, so eventually she replaced it with the singer and it's never been any trouble at ALL compared to that awful thing. my friend in highschool also had a kenmore that was bought around the same few years, it was COMPLETELY different, and broke in an entirely different way than ours did -_-;;

so i dunno... different stories, i guess. i DO like auto-replacement warranties (i mean, that's why i buy stuff at futureshop rather than independant store ;P), but don't you have to pay money every year for sears maintenance plans? o.o

(urk... speaking of replacement warranties... must remember to take my discman in to futureshop in the next month or so... >_>;; )

gah must sleep... o_o

I wonder if a shopping expedition might be arranged (or someone put a list of Toronto fabric stores together for people to explore on their own) as part of the con, for those of us who don't get to Toronto very often? Sounds like there's good stuff to be had, maybe better than anything I've got in my local shops. :)

i have yet to go there, but that's what i hear ^_^

yes, it's Queen Street West (ack i almost wrote east!). there are a couple other smaller districts for other kinds of fabric around the city that i've never been sure where they are...

Queen Street, starting directly West of Spadina (some of you would know that as one of the corners of chinatown :P) is what is officially known as the "the Fashion District" (i believe this comes from back when they used to have a bunch of actual sewing factories and stuff, before so much labour moved out of the country to be cheaper and all >_>). you can just either get on the streetcar at Spadina station and go down to Queen, or walk west from Osgoode subway station, and once you get to spadina just walk west and there's a ton of fabric and notions stores for the next few blocks. there's a couple bead stores, there's a store that sells ONLY buttons, there's stores that sell only notions and lots and lots of insane trim (woo, even 20$/metre trim -_-;;), there's a store that sells ONLY ribbons (mokuba ribbon), etc.

then there's Macdonald Faber (MacFab), which is run by an old graduate of my school, and gives discounts to students, sells some different interesting stuff than the other stores in some cases, apparently does alot of business with the toronto film-costuming industry, and sells alot of useful tools you might want, especially if you start pattern drafting more - (no, seriously, SEETHRU RULERS ARE THE BEST THING EVER O_O!), and some different stuff than you'd find in the fashion district - last year it'd big thing was insane fake fur, but he tends to go on different tacks every year i think... i think he sells some expensive european import fabric too (as opposed to the eastern knockoffs that many of the fashion district stores sell... not that i'm complaining about the cheaper stuff, i can't afford euro designer stuff ^^;;), but they recently moved, so i dunno where they are right now...

as for a shopping trip at a con... i think you'd need more than a 3 day con for it to really work, since you need pretty much an ENTIRE afternoon to get anything out of it.

i would also warn, if you are going there to shop, HAVE SOMETHIGN SPECIFIC you need in mind before you go! otherwise you will end up with lots of shiny fun crazy fabrics and next time you have a costume to make you wno't be able to use them for ANYTHING. XDD (hell, i would know. i have no self control for clearance sales. ^^;;)

the other crappy thing, is they all usually close around 5 or 6 pm. soo seeing as my shopping usually happens afterschool i never have very long to wander. you gotta be careful about that ^^';;

Designer Fabrics (on Queen W, but much farther west than the fabric district) is my favourite place ever (and conveniently enough, only a couple blocks from my house! XD ). It makes me cry tho, coz they have tons of gorgeous embroidered silks that I cannot afford. -.-;;

MacFab has moved east along Queen to Queen & Bathurst. ^_^ They're a great place for notions and bits such as corset boning, zippers of any size or colour, buttons, ribbons, lining, etc.

Kaijugal and I are planning a fabric shopping excursion at some point in the near future...but I'm always up for shopping. ^_^ Ehehehe.

ooh! Mac Fab is closer to my house now... i could just take the streetcar down bathurst... :D i always just don't bother going there because it's too far along Queen once i get there, but i haven't been since *last* september and there was stuff i wanted to see if they still had... and they're nice to young people. and my student card gets me a discount.

(ooh, another note - if you are like half the people i know and constantly getting annoyed by running out of sewing thread: if you have anywhere you can get it, just buy the industrial thread instead, it's only 2-3$ per spool and it lasts about a million times longer than those tiny spools you get at the domestic stores. if you dont' have that, just buy serger thread, it's the same thing. industrial thread is not as strong as the domestic machine thread, but it's what they use in normal clothes - but it's good because if something rips you want it to rip along the *stitching* and not the *fabric* so then it's mendable. the reason it's not so common is it's technically not as good for your domestic machine because it creates more lint/thread dust, but i've been using it in my domestic machine for 4 years and my old sewing teacher does too, and it hasnt' done anything bad.)

i wanna go fabric shopping too! (not that i should spend much but i have an outfit i need to do a fabric search for) :D i'll probably be busy whatever weekend it is coz that always happens, but i live around here so getting there isn't a problem... if you don't mind another person tagging along, pm me if you know what weekend you're going? ^_^

Kaijugal and I are planning a fabric shopping excursion at some point in the near future...but I'm always up for shopping. ^_^ Ehehehe.

AAHHH!!! Must...go....fabric...shopping!!!
:waaaah:
Oh and Xiola, definately come if you can. :) We have to get it organized. This has been a bum week for me because my day off was Thanksgiving.

So many projects , so little time.. and money..a hhhhhhh!!!
I love Designer Fabric too, but sometimes you can find real treats in the out of the way shops. I'm going to see if I can scare up anything extra special the few days I'm down in the US. I usually bring back a small stash.
Hopefully if I win anything, I'll bring back more than a small stash. :D

*** Actually on second thought, I think I'll invest in a Shiny new Serger. Yes that's the thing...***
:bigtu:
Actually I desperately need material for my Ent. Also I need fur for my TT project as you know. LOL! I think that's going to be the most fun of all. (as opposed to the ultra demanding and serious yet I can't wait to see it Spirited Away project) :)

as for kenmores, sears DOES have good customer service, but that still doesnt' mean their machines are *consistent*. like...

It's true it doesn't mean thier machines are of a consistant quality, my point was I'm pleased that Sears gives me a hassle free replacement policy, so I can sew them into the ground, until I can find and afford a model of sewing machine that can endure the rigors of what I, (and more importantly my clueless male roomates :eeek: ), do to it. :)

I did have the MORSE as I said which I LOVE LOVE LOVED! All metal and tough as nails. Damn them for not producing the parts any longer!
And once I won a Pfaff that runs like a dream, unfortunately in a bout of temporary insanity I gave it to my, (longtime but now
ex), boyfriend. :eeek: (( Smacks self in forehead!)) :dunce:

so i dunno... different stories, i guess. i DO like auto-replacement warranties (i mean, that's why i buy stuff at futureshop rather than independant store ;P), but don't you have to pay money every year for sears maintenance plans? o.o

I pay $15 once every 4 years.

Cheers!

*gurgles* ...already in panic about getting costumes done on time...and the con isn't until may...and i feel like i'm already a month behind schedule.....

I've never really done much shopping in the Fabric District. I just feel out of my element there b/c I have no idea where the heck I'm going and so on...lol. x_X;

Oh, and I completely understand your plight about the stretchy fabric, Kia. Having that same issue myself with my Agrias fabric! x_X;

As for sleeves vs. pants...i find both a challenge. T_T though Agrias will be the first costume I make pants-pants for....but Xianghua's shorts were evil and out to get me :) I always need to re-do sleevs at least three times before they co-operate. -_-;

STRETCHY FABRIC TIPS:

i don't know a ton about knitwear, but i *have* used it to make shirts and stuff on several occasions and people seem scared of it, so if it helps anyone, this is what i know about it:

in case you haven't noticed it yet, you probably have... the problem with stretchy fabric is that you DON'T want it to stretch while you're SEWING it. but you DO want it to stretch when you're *wearing* it or else the fabric will stretch more than the seam, and especially if it's something like an armhole or a neckhole, if it doesnt' stretch, the seam could just rip. sometimes, if it's not super stretchy, you can sew it with a normal stitch and just be careful about how it feeds, but if it's *particularly* stretchy, you can't just cut it out and sew it like normal coz then you'll end up with these REEALLY stretched out seams and lots of buckling and ugliness and not-fitting-ness, right?

anyway, these are my top suggestions:

a) what i do: if you have a newish sewing machine, the best thing to do is dig out your manual and see if there's a 3-step backstitch or something with a backstitch in it that says it's good for stretch fabrics. it takes 3 times longer to sew with that stitch and i hate it, but in some cases it's the only thing you can do to keep the fabric from stretching out of shape when you're sewing it.

b) this seems to be the simplest answer but you still have to be careful while sewing not to stretch the fabric, and it's not QUITE as clean a finish; my mother tells me that in her home knitwear course from the 70's, they were taught to use a very slight zigzag stitch, so that your seams don't *look* bumpy, but there is a bit of ease in there to deal with the stretch. (so to set your machine for that, you would keep the stitch LENGTH normal (usally 2 to 2.5 if your dial goes to 4 or 5), but change the stitch WIDTH to a very slight zigzag. like say, maybe no wider than 1 out of 5? i'm just guessing, i've never used this method).

c) if you have a really fancy sewing machine, you may be able to change the tension of the feed-dog (you know the rough parts underneath the presser foot that actually pull your fabric through the machine?). if so, experiment with that, and you can probably set it so that it doesn't stretch the fabric out of shape as much.

otherwise there's:

d) use a 4-thread serger, possibly with stretchy nylon thread. unfortunately that's not much of an option for most people. and using serging as your only seam isn't really ideal anyway, it's better to use serging only as an edge finish and not your actual stress-bearing seam.

e) elastic thread. i have NEVER used this and have no idea how it works in a standard new machine. i personally wouldn't reccomend it, because most types of elastic or stretchy things disintigrate over time and i'd be worried that it would eventually lose it's stretch and the thread would snap. but like i said, i've never used it so i don't know. also, it wouldn't help the problem of your fabric stretching when you sew it, because it still doesn't change the feeder tension of the sewing machine.

someone else can probably offer more help on this, but hopefully that helps someone ^^;;

I've had a huge problem sewing anything stretchy because my machine doesn't have any special settings for it. It goes forward/backward. That's it.

I usually put it on the widest stitch and everything goes okay, but I also think that the presser-foot thing doesn't have a lot of pressure on it in the first place, so the fabric isn't pulled enough to stretch.

(Fixed my old kenmore. one silly screw was worn down...all better at no cost! ^_^. The Singer I bought doesn't work very well. I think the feed-dogs (?) are worn or something. The wide stitch isn't wide at all and it has trouble pulling the fabric through...but it folds into the desk it came with, which is neat.)

I was planning on Kuja, Trainer Yuna and something else, but I don't know if I'll do the first two right away...I also want to wear my inuyasha and leifang costumes.....but after playing X-2, I'm thinking of warrior class yuna, since I haven't seen anyone do that one yet. Though, I'm probably just not going to the right websites...
Ahhh! I don't know what to wear....I've only worn my X and X-2 costumes once each as well, and I've fixed all their problems, so I would like to wear them as well......but the con is only 3 days, after all....

It wasn't anal retentive research for once :O it was more of "make it look like I'm doing stuff on the comp so that I can relax" research. I got some stuff done but not how much I'm use to.
