This is a thread about cosplay for Borderlands. If you've got any costumes/props from Borderlands, feel free to share :) (Note: if this thread has been made before, forgive me and let this one die)

I've just started on my first ever cosplay outfit: the Psycho (http://i735.photobucket.com/albums/ww358/Downloadbox/IMG_1/Borderlands-RELOADED.jpg). I've got an old hockey mask of mine which i'm going to glue the bottom of a plastic bottle to the mouth area of the mask (to give the rather rubbish illusion of a ventilation system). I'm then going to paint over the entire mask with white and finish off with the detailing.
I'm also going to try and get some orange trousers and old leather belts. If anyone could give me some pointers on what type of trouser to use, i'd really appreciate it: i'm not too sure whether to try sweat pants, jeans, cargo, canvas etc.

ehh... I'd go with cargo jeans without pockets... the way they're sewn together just looks like cargos to me. ^o^

I agree with cargo pants, or any canvas pant that would be loose in the legs.

Boyfriend and I are doing Lilith and Mordecai for PAX East next weekend, pics will follow soon after!

My boyfriend and I are going to TRY to pull off Lilith and Ned at Dragon*Con this year if we have time... also working on Nina Williams and Yoshimitsu from Tekken 6, so...*crosses fingers*

I've been workin on a Ned/Zed a bit. Not much progress so far due to RL stuff, but hope to have it presentable at least by con-season.

me and my girlfriend gave Roland and Lilith a try. We may try again later. I made his armor out of cardboard and was going to glue it to backpack straps. I also wore a vest under it. It would have looked pretty decent, but I didn't give myself enough prep time for it. That and I need to drop a bit of weight too.

My boyfriend and I just went to ACen as Lilith and Mordecai - we actually won Best Group for it too! I have pictures up in my gallery. We were two of only four Borderlands people there, surprisingly. There was a Moxxi and a REALLY good Psycho...of which we only crossed paths with once, sadly.

We might be going to Youmacon, and if we do we'll probably bust these out again - I'll be making a Roland and Brick to go along with them if that's the case. They were a ton of fun to wear, and the conversations we had with people just made it better. On Saturday we actually asked each person that took our picture what class they played...
Sirens FTW! (:

I've noticed a lot of people that do Lilith do a really pale yellow/white zippered jacket portion, but on my computer (and the others I've hijacked) it looks pale greenish in game using the default colors. I know you can change the colors of the outfit, but I want to go default...is it just me or does it actually start a shade of green?

NeonBunnyGirl

your talking about the under jacket right? on 360 it looks more greenish than yellow.

I went with a tannish color for mine because it seems most realistic. I had planed to weather it and dirty it up, but time got the best of me on that one.

Anyway, on my tv and in screenshots on my monitor it looks much closer to yellow than green, but that's just me.

it might help you, if you go on the gearbox forums. i've heard the makers hang around there sometimes, so they might answer your question.

Thanks, I'll check that out!

And, I just looked in game when you go through character creation and it does default as one of the colors in the "yellow-green" column on my screen on P.C. Then again, I guess it would all depend on the monitor. lol *sigh* Either way, I hope as long as I get all the pieces right, it won't matter too much in the color difference. :-)

NeonBunnyGirl

i think it all depends on your color brightness (whatever its called) on your monitor or tv. but as long as it looks like it close to the color thats all that really matters..

So I have a question about Mad Moxxi's coat. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/Shiowa/ss_9be673de79107a5e335b7adf207320aa9269ae761024x76 8.jpg
How can I make the lower part stay up like that? Don't really figure it out.

I don't think anyone would give you any grief is it didn't say up, but if you have your heart set it then it sounds like a job for starch. Lots and lots of starch. Liquid starch to be exact. Here's a link I found that should help out: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_would_you_use_to_make_clothing_stiff

Awesome!! My hubby and I are going to be at the Ottawa Comiccon too!! I've been working feverishly to get everything together for his Dr Zed costume and my Moxxi costume :) Hope we'll see you there! I was wondering if there were going to be any more Borderlands types there! I'll post some photos when we have them :)

There was a whole crowd of Borderlands Cosplayers at Ottawa Comiccon this weekend! No formal photoshoot was set, but a huge chunk ended up crashing together at one point, as soon as I find a picture (the ones I had someone take with my phone were BLURRY), I'll be sure to post!

We had:
Moxxi (Me!)
Two Dr Zeds
Lilith
Maya
Roland
Axton
Gaige
Salvador
Handsome Jack
Tannis
Lady Psycho
Daisy

Also ran into Valenkeit and his wife (Marauder and Lilith) at a different point - and a few others along the way, so lots of Borderlands repping!

im not sure what im going to do about a weapon prop yet tho.

Sounds like you're doing well so far! The obvious choice is the standard buzzaxe. I wanted to get one made for my hubby's Zed costume, but I ran out of time. I've seen a few around (some better than others) but for mine I'm starting with a foam sword as the base, which I'll be shaping and coating in... well, something, probably epoxy or air dry clay, stiff cardboard for the blade, craft foam for the upper structure (that houses the blade). Well see how it goes :)

So I have searched and searched and searched and haven't found a single decent picture of the Borderlands group from Ottawa Comiccon. This one (which was only marginally better than mine) gives the idea of what was there, but I wish someone had posted a proper one :( I know there was at least one person with a decent camera in the group of 50+ who gathered around when we got together, but no luck finding it:

Borderlands Group Picture! (https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/431834_10151889514588852_870783493_n.jpg)

(apparently I can't post photos?)

And I put a few of the ones taken of my hubby and I in my profile :) I'm still waiting for the rest of the professional ones from the masquerade, but there are enough to give the idea of how our costumes turned out! I was so happy with the finished look, all I need to do for next time (an upcoming photoshoot with a friend) is make our weapons, fix my button placement, and probably re-do the top hat to be shorter and less curly in the brim area. Oh, and actually have someone do my hair so it stays when I curl it.

Anyone planning any upcoming cosplays? Any Kreig fans putting something together now that he's out?

I think most Gaige cosplayers I've seen made plates out of heat shaped craft foam and attached them to a black sleeve (one here (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=504674546241626&set=a.481400221902392.105062.442057902503291&type=3&l=50707fe467&theater) made hers out of craft foam and worbla, then velcroed the pieces on, looks awesome!). I suppose it could also be done with silver fabric, if you prefer not to work with craft foam, but it gives a more metal look with stiff pieces.

There are various tutorials around for working with craft foam, and I imagine the techniques used in making just about any craft foam armour would apply to making the pieces of her arm. I haven't done much craft foam work to date, but I've been researching it quite a bit for an upcoming Gears of War cosplay :) Good luck!

i was thinking about craft foam. that it seemed to be the best way. and try and find a good glove to work on it was well and use velcro to attach the arm to the shirt under the sleeve to keep it in place. and also work on the one vault hunter logo as well. that i was thinking of going to my craft store with my aunt to get her advice. i am trying to go some of my own stuff with this cosplay since i cant afford to have people working on it >< i cant sow sadly so my aunt might help me or my friend who can as well lol

LadyCrankypants
06-02-2013, 11:09 PM
The vault hunter logo on her belt? You might be able to get away with craft foam for that too (worth a shot), but I would probably make it out of poly clay (like fimo or sculpley) and paint with acrylic paints.

If you have a chance, you should get your aunt or your friend to teach you some sewing skills! It's not easy, but even with a basic understanding you can start working on some simple modifications and construction for your cosplays :)

XD i know, i use to be able to sow a little from a home ec class in high school. i even made a hoodie but sadly i lost the skills i learned cause i ran into the art classes and also marching band became my life more. i know i need more. i can do simple things like repair holes but not much as making them lol i was think for her logo on the belt like maybe wood or something that might be already shaped. paint them and then glue them together. and i just noticed in my game that her class mods are lunch boxes >< i have some ones that i have had as a kid that i can just work on lol they would be the place i can put my money and phone it XD

You'll have a hard time finding wood already in the shape of a cutout vault symbol, it's not exactly a standard design, and shaping wood without woodworking tools would be difficult.

Yeah, the lunch box class mods are super cute, and if you have one to work with, it will surely be pretty easy, and you can pick a design from an in-game model by using the options in the backpack menu :) There are some pretty funky looking ones, it should be a lot of fun!

i was thinking the legendary one with claptrap on it lol. but as for the vault symbol i was thinking of asking my aunt if she could work on the wood and make it look like it or something. i know i need to work with her on the props and such for this. i really want to get as much done before my con in august. and since i am going to use it for both cons i am wanting to go to what i dont get done for that one i will want to get done for the second one since the second one is much much bigger.

I am planning out / trying to plan a Axton cosplay, but I admit it is quite intimidating to look at, mostly because of the various props involved (shield, gun, class mod, etc). Never tried putting electronics into a costume before. It is however, made a bit easier by the fact that the color scheme is interchangeable.

His pants look like 5.11s
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003HQBVVQ/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Riggers Belt
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014VX5ZG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

This nerf gun looks outlandish enough, hopefully its big enough (all the guns in that game are massively oversized)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004SKX884/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1

His outfit is "decorated" by lots of nylon webbing and buckles
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001LO47JO/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AM98PYZJHM5HC

He also has a handgun thigh holster
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001LO47JO/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AM98PYZJHM5HC

And a one-strap bag

He also has a throat mic and generic-looking earpiece which should be relatively easy to obtain. The part that I am unsure about is the jacket. It looks like a stylized military high-collar jacket, just not sure how to make it. If anyone has any thoughts, that would be much appreciated.

Haha, thank you so much. He doesn't think highly of his work, no matter how many times I tell him, or the amount of feedback he reads on DeviantART. I think his confidence has grown tremendously from this experience and he's eager to craft more. I'm honored to have been a part of the project. He made a dream costume come to life for me and I cannot thank him enough for it. <3

Speaking of Krieg, if I were a buff man I would totally do it. I adore his character. Especially after that bonus video.

@humanoidrkangel: For the belt buckle, I would recommend super sculpey. You can create the base, cook it, and then add the vault hunter logo on top with more sculpey, and cook it again. It's how we made my Amon (Legend of Korra) mask. It's pretty sturdy and takes paint really well. I've used it many times since J introduced me to it.

As for the gun, I don't know of any particular toy gun, but many Borderlands cosplayers go with NERF. My fiancee used two NERF guns for his Salvador and just gave them a paint job. He didn't alter their designs much at all. He did have to make a stencil for his Moxxi logo. He created the design by sketching it on paper and then cutting it out with an exacto knife.

@Persiflage88: Is there a military surplus store near you? They often carry different types of jackets, and gear, that could work perfectly for Axton.

humanoidrkangel

I'm still planning on making Rubi for my Moxxi cosplay, I have a random toy gun I picked up which I'm going to be adding pieces and LED lighting to as necessary using craft foam, hot gule and air dry clay, and shaping as necessary after the fact with my dremel. If it works out, I'll let you know ;) How far away is your con?

Also, there are unlimited different designs for Rubi - this is the one I'm going to be working off, but I have two more sitting in my bank if you wanna see them too ;)

Sounds like you have a good start! As for electronics, LED circuit wiring is actually pretty simple, and you can find the supplies pretty cheap on the interwebs (I got mine off ebay).

The part that I am unsure about is the jacket. It looks like a stylized military high-collar jacket, just not sure how to make it. If anyone has any thoughts, that would be much appreciated.
I would start from scratch using a jacket pattern with a mandarin collar... There are a few about like this one (http://sewing.patternreview.com/patterns/20652). Then block out the different colours, use bias tape for the borders between colours, and modify the front to stretch over to the zipper. The zipper is oversized, like the ones available here (http://gear.orgxiii.org/).

I'm glad his confidence is growing, he really does deserve the praise :) Still my favourite Zer0 and Salvador so far! I hope my skills get to that point! And I know what you mean about Kreig... He has a solid design!

Actually, I love all the character designs, I was looking at my Gaige today and thinking, "I need to make that!" Buuuuut, I have other cosplays waiting that will be super time intensive... Maybe Borderlands 3 will be out by the time I have time to make another Borderlands cosplay ;)

Thats the corrosive rubi it looks like. i was wanting either the one in the pic or the electric one due to the fact that gaige is very tuned to that element. my con is in august but i do have another one in January. so i want to get the major elements done first. such as the belt, arm, and well the tee and vest lol i am going with the necrosis head for her first since i have to get everything else done and more money for that. XD then afterward a black hair style of her normal head.

this one is not to bad but i wouldnt like the big guard on it. wouldnt be able to put this in a holster. XD

http://orcz.com/images/thumb/1/12/Missmoxisrubybl2.jpg/400px-Missmoxisrubybl2.jpg

my only thing is i cant work with led this is my frist time doing any prop making. i wouldnt mind seeing how well your rubi turns out. ^.^ i might ask for a little help depending on how much it would cost since i have a short time to make a lot of props XD

It's not THE corrosive Rubi, it's A corrosive Rubi :) Here are two other corrosive Rubis:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/IMG_5550.jpg
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/IMG_5551.jpg

Like all guns in the game, there are infinite possibilities for how they'll end up looking (with a few common elements like the three chamber revolver area and the barrel shape), and the only real difference between the Rubis of different elements is the colour of the LEDs. Pick whichever one is in a shape you think you can deal with, put blue LEDs in and you have an electric Rubi :) I'm just going with the first one I posted because it was the first one I found after deciding to make Rubi, and so I bought the toy gun whose shape matched it most closely.

For wiring LEDs, I just did a lot of research on wiring LED circuits, and ordered all the necessary parts of e-bay. I'll be sure to post a tutorial on my blog when I figure out what works :)

i ment the element that rubi has XD not like its the only one. but for me im not that talented with that kind of stuff i am only just starting to make my own props. sadly. this is my 5 cosplay, but this one i am trying to gp farther with.

LadyCrankypants

These (my Moxxi and my hubby's Dr Zed) are my first cosplays, but being the perfectionist that I am, I find that with enough research (and enough dicking around), just about anything is possible. Even if there isn't a tutorial out there for Rubi yet, there are plenty of tutorials for other guns, so I'll wing it between that and instinct :)

Like PetiteAltesse said, you can always go the Nerf gun route if you don't want to get too crazy into sculpting and whatnot, and there are quite a few tutorials on adding electronics to props if you look for them. If you end up deciding not to put electronics in, that works too, people will recognize your costume and love your work even if it's not 100% accurate, but if you have the time and resources to research and experiment a little, you may surprise yourself with what you come up with :) I'm sure you'll do a fine job on your props, no matter what you choose to do!

No worries, just do what you can, and love every minute of wearing it!

I swear I am going to get to work on my buzzaxe (for my hubby's Dr Zed) this week. I picked up a wood burning tool the other day and I'm planning on using it to shape the blade of my foam sword closer to the buzzaxe shaft shape with it before coating the whole shaft in air dry clay. It may be a terrible, terrible failure, but at least the sword is too long, so I can test technique on the excess before I try anything stupid ;)

update - arm is being worked on. found gloves to use for it and new stripped leggins due to the ones i have there is a hole in them. the wrench and hammer are getting worked on and the vest sadly needed to be started over due to my boss's cats well they were cats...leaving it at that. my job is to work on the shoes and to find a lunch box to use and start working on that. i am going to save the hair for my second con i will be wearing this to so i will be able to afford a wig and the wig head to work on it with. as for the rubi same issue i cant afford to work on it till after the con in august.

I saw the class mod picture you had and I like it! I can't take credit for construction; my boyfriend made it. The front (and back) designs were printed onto adhesive-backed vinyl and placed onto the lunch box.

Being a look-alike means nothing, as long as you put effort in and have a great time doing it, you'd be an awesome Borderlands Cosplayer, that's the whole point of cosplay :)

borzou - That Shield is SWEET, both in form and in paint job! I need to get a 3D printer! You know, when I'm a millionaire ;)

humanoidrkangel - Awesome progress! Your con was in August, right? How did it go? Do you have pics of the final product?

Quiptorium - I saw your pics in the picture feed - awesome work! You and your boyfriend really pulled it together! Did he go in costume too? Looking forward to more pics!

I'm BAAAACK! I was away all summer on contract, and just didn't have the time to get anything done. I swore this week I'd get to work on my weapons, but it just didn't happen - maybe if I set a date for my photoshoot I'd be a little more motivated! In the meantime, I have plans, just need the time to see if they work.

So it turns out there's a con coming up in my city on the 7th and 8th of December (Pop Expo... It's all about comics, gaming, and movies), and I'm making myself a Gaige costume for it! Woooo! I've decided to build my Gaige with my favourite skins, Cool as Ice for the colouring, and the Bullet Buccaneer head from Captain Scarlett's Pirate Booty, because I love blue, and pirates are awesome. That said, I'm sure I'll hate wearing the eyepatch all day, but I love the look! I've already started on wig and shoe shopping, have a plan for most of the construction, and have my shopping list ready for my trip to my local fabric store during this weekend's 50% off sale ;) I can't wait to get working!

umm we are just remaking the arm out of the same materials just a little better. it was made out of craft foam but the pieces were not right and the glove we used was not wanting to work with us so we decided to make a sleeve out of a shirt and then find a glove to put on underneath it.

umm we are just remaking the arm out of the same materials just a little better. it was made out of craft foam but the pieces were not right and the glove we used was not wanting to work with us so we decided to make a sleeve out of a shirt and then find a glove to put on underneath it.

Makes sense - good luck! I'm planning on making a full arm glove out of spandex which will attach to the inside of the top (around the shoulder so the sleeve still drapes correctly) with velcro. I went shopping today and picked up some sintra to use for the plating on the arm - I'm both excited and scared to start working with it... I've heard great things, but it's so hard, but it's apparently super easy to heat shape, so it should work out! I also picked up everything necessary for the skirt, hat, eye patch, under-shirt, leather belt, and the chain belt.

I'm torn on what fabric to use for the vest... It's supposed to be her "school uniform" and looks a bit like a sleeveless letter jacket, which is usually made of leather and/or thick wool, but the colouration in game makes me lean toward leather (or pleather, as I can't afford to drop the money needed for genuine leather). Maybe I'll try for wool with the black areas in pleather.... It's so tough to decide!

Aside from that, all I need now is to order enough LEDs for the shield and grenade mod, find an adequate belt buckle, find shoes, pick up some opaque blue tights (and paint stripes on them), order my wig, find a small metal lunchbox, and... make EVERYTHING! I'm really stoked though :)

Oh, and I FINALLY started construction on Rubi (as I'll be using her with my Gaige, and for Moxxi re-wears). I scrapped the original gun I started with, and I'll be building her in craft foam, with the centre cut out of the inner layers to allow room for wiring. I picked up some semi-opaque plastic tubing to use for the three cylinders in the back of the gun... Here's hoping I can figure it all out!

XD i wish you the best of luck for all of that. i had my vest made out of cotton due to the amount of heat that i didnt want to have when wearing it in an area full of people and since it was black and white color that i did the black was keeping heat from the lights so i went light cotton. that did well for me. and i had a skirt already that i just used for her skirt. i painted my lunch box with acrylic and used grey for a base then painted over it. and then put modge podge over the paint to seal it. i also made patterns for the clap trap on top of it and modge podge over it to seal it to the lunch box before i painted the colors on it. as for the arm, we found that slick material is hard to work with. we got a satin prom gloves not thinking about that and had to modge podge the glove (which did glue it to my hand so that was fun to remove) to make the pieces stick and glue to the glove. it did harden the satin but i was still able to fully use my hand but it was stiff a little but not to bad.

all in all i found out the hard way about gluing things onto materials and having the glue soak through. at the con since we decided to use Velcro to the main large arm pieces, we had to lock tight the small Velcro pieces back down and well....that was fun to try and take the glove off then. so learn from me about this ^.^ another reason why we are remaking the arm lol.

As the con is in December, I'm not TOO worried about heat, and last time I was in that hall during cold months, I was pretty cold. I'm planning on making one of the technophile class mods (partially because most Gaige cosplayers I've seen went for the legendary claptrap one).

as for the arm, we found that slick material is hard to work with. we got a satin prom gloves not thinking about that and had to modge podge the glove (which did glue it to my hand so that was fun to remove) to make the pieces stick and glue to the glove. it did harden the satin but i was still able to fully use my hand but it was stiff a little but not to bad.

Fair enough :) I'm also planning on using velcro, but I'll be sewing it to the glove, not gluing - that way I don't need to worry about stickiness :) I will have to glue the velcro to the sintra, but as I'm using high temp hot glue, it should bond the velcro to the sintra pretty tightly. If that doesn't end up working, I'll try e6000.

yeah good luck with making your gaige ^.^ i am trying to do silica from sword art as well and i am going to try and mess with a toy dagger to make her dagger. and yeah modge podge is so nice to have and you dont need much for it. but we were thinking about hot glue as well for the arm. so i am hoping that when we redo the arm for me it will look better. please let me know how your's goes. ^.^ i would like see what i am afford to do. best of luck tho!

Makes sense, and I will definitely let you know how it goes (and post about it on my blog in great detail) when I get there :)

In the meantime - I finally started work on Rubi! Since I wanted her for Moxxi, and Gaige is surely going to need a gun, win win! I quickly scrapped my original idea of working with a toy gun, as it was going to take way too much effort to get the one I had purchased to A) look anything like Rubi and B) have enough room inside for the wiring. Instead, I started from scratch with craft foam! My original plan was to make THIS RUBI (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/IMG_4683.jpg), but it seemed that it would be impossible (or I would have to make it pretty darned small) to fit it into Moxxi's holster.... Soooo, I switched to THIS RUBI! (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/IMG_3121.jpg) I'm sad about the loss of the big trigger guard thing as it's a common feature on Borderlands pistols, but I'll make do :)

At this point, I have the core of the gun and ALL of the wiring in place, and damned if that doesn't feel like an accomplishment :) Check out the lighting!! (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/lights.jpg") It's still in two halves at the moment, but it'll be together soon. It was actually pretty easy (even though it took a little while) and it's going to look AWESOME once everything else is in place!

XD thats awesome. i found a cheap and i mean CHEAP ($0.25) water gun that i am going to have my aunt help me with painting and such to turn it into a borderlands gun for my gaige. and due to me getting into a new anime i have added another cosplay to my list for my nest con where i will more then likely be gaige for friday and then silica from SAO on saturday. so now i have three projects to work on. making a sword and shoes for silica and a gun for gaige. great thing tho i have pretty much all of gaige done. but i might need to work on the arm a little later. but i need to save my money for silica since i need to get the sword painted and trimmed down to a proper size. i might go and do some fine trimming on the arm for my gaige since i quite didnt like the look of the one we have done. but like i said i need my money for silica since i am ordering the outfit online due to it being alot of work and i dont want to make my boss sow more then what she has done for me so far lol

NikolaElvenmaid: Awesome work so far! Love your buzzaxe, neat that you chose Kreig's style, and your mask looks awesome, sweet work for less than $6! Can't wait to see how the rest turns out!

I've gotten a bit more work done on my Rubi. I broke out my wannabe dremel for the first time tonight and worked on some of the shaping, as well as getting the first outer panels for the gun cut out. Glad to hear you've made some progress! As for the gun, the bandit series (red with teeth) like the ass beeter (http://images.wikia.com/borderlands/images/7/71/AssBeeterPistol.jpg) or hed shooter (http://images.wikia.com/borderlands/images/0/08/HedShooter.jpg) would be an easily identifiable style, and any non-elemental versions don't have lighting, so you wouldn't have to worry about LEDs.

No progress lately on my projects... Boo. I need to pick up different tubing than what I had found for the magazine, as it's too small, and find me some paint and primer for the base coat. I have a photoshoot Saturday to do some promo pics of my Robin costume to help get some attention/support for my fundraising efforts for a costumed run I'll be doing at the end of the month... and before then I need to make some gloves and shoe covers, so no Rubi work until afterward. That said the rest of Saturday and Sunday I should be able to find some time to get to work and make some actual progress!

I have a question for anyone that is doing or has done a Moxxi cosplay! Are you making your jacket/outfit or having it commissioned? I have pretty much no sewing skills, but would really like to do a Moxxi cosplay. So would it be easier to try to make it myself or have it commissioned? I have about a year to work on this, in case time is a factor!(:

Welcome to the party, magannelle! I made a Moxxi for our local convention this past May, and have been posting tutorials on my build process over on my blog - http://crankypantschronicles.blogspot.ca/. The short answer to your question is with no sewing skills, it will be a pain in the butt - you pretty well need basic sewing skills and the ability to read a pattern etc. That said if you have someone who can help you get started and teach you a little bit about sewing before you get too far into it, it's totally possible - heck, the last garment I had made before I started was a sloppy pair of shorts over 10 years ago. My advice would be take a click through the blog to see the kind of work involved, and see if you want to tackle it. If the answer ends up being no, then there are many awesome commissioners out there - either way good luck, and if you have any questions, just let me know!!

Aww, thanks! It was a pain to find, but I really wanted the right texture! And it's nice to know SOMEONE is getting some use out of my blog :) If you need any advice or reference pictures (I still have all of the ones I took), just let me know!

More progress! (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/gunprogress.jpg)Even though I said I wouldn't be working on anything, I just couldn't resist, so I got the first few side panels for Rubi together - I am SO stoked on how this is turning out so far! I also picked up all the paint/primer/clear coat I'm going to need for the base coats on the gun, blue leggings, the larger tubing I needed for Rubi's cartridge and power switches for the grenade, shield and gun, AND I got some of the things I ordered online in the mail - my beautiful blue wig (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/IMG_3192.jpg) (though it's going to be a pain to style! (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/IMG_3038.jpg)), the mini lunchbox (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/IMG_3257.jpg) I'm going to be using to make the class mod, and all the LEDs/supplies I'll need for the shield and grenade mod!

That said, I've been working on Robin ever since FINALLY finding green spandex! I didn't finish everything in time for my original photoshoot date, so I've had to push it back to Wednesday or Thursday, but I'm SO close to being finished now (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/robinsetup.jpg)- I just need more green thread so I can finish the seams on my little Robin briefs and I'm done!! Now I just need to get through this week at work before I can get back to Gaige :)

Aww, thanks! I'm pretty stoked about the wig, but I'm also a little worried... I've been going through tutorials, and pretty well all of them seem to require wefts for styles like this one. I'd just order some, but there aren't any available from the coscom wig store in that colour. I may try to go without and see how it works out, then look for some in a similar colour from a different site if I think I need more hair.

Glad to hear your swords are coming along, and can't wait to see your new arm (once you've had time to build it!)

Awesome! Let me know how it goes!

More progress! I picked up the last few things (that I can think of) I need for my Gaige - blue pleather for the vest, white for the skull on the back, black lining material, cord to make the piping, battery clips (which I had forgotten to order with the rest of my electronics), and most excitingly - I finally found shoes! I'd been having a heck of a time finding decent priced shoes that worked no matter where I looked (shoe stores, department stores, the internet) - the closest next best thing option was going to be $40 with shipping. Instead I lucked out and found an almost perfect pair at Ardene (a cheap girly accessory shop) for only $10! They had a whole slew of canvas Chuck-Taylor style sneakers, but I opted for these beauts (http://www.ardene.com/en/footwear/sneakers/midcut-sneaker-w-quilted-upper-1.html), as I felt the fake leather will be more easily painted than canvas, the ankle comes up far enough, and is padded, which gives them the look I was after. The only down side is the "quilt" stitching that I've been working on picking out. I also picked up blue fabric paint and white craft foam to mod them with. I can't wait to finish picking out the stitches so I can get to work on the fun stuff!

Aaaaand I was able to put some more time into my Rubi! I attacked the main gun with my dremel wannabe to sand it down to the correct shape, and cut and shaped some of the more fiddly bits for the outer shell. I'm loving how it's coming together, but still puzzling over how to paint it. I have all the different stuff to fill, seal, prime, paint and coat it, but I'm not sure how to approach it - I need to glue the gun together before I can fill and paint it, but I don't want to paint it with the LEDs in. I have a few ideas, but I'll have to experiment before I actually go for it. Check out the progress! (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/rubi-progress2.jpg) Looking good, if I may say so myself :D

I've been slowly plugging away on my Rubi, only slightly hindered by my Borderlands 2 addiction which was brought back by working on Gaige, and intensified by the blasted Borderlands 2 Loot Challenge... Being Canadian, I can't actually win anything, but some of the guns are awesome :)

*cough*

So progress! First thing first, I think I finally have the main body of the gun (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/Rubi-Shape.jpg) where I want it (except for the trigger, delayed because I couldn't find my switches, and the hammer)! And I started work on the magazine/cartridges finally. The magazine is basically three tubes with glowy ends, and the topmost has little windows with "maliwan" on them. I used polypropylene tubing because it's semi-opaque, so it glows nicely without showing off the insides. Here's how it's looking so far! (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/Rubi-Cartridge1.jpg)

I've I did some paint tests on a scrap of craft foam to see if I had the "right stuff" to get the finish I was after, and damn if it isn't beautiful! Obviously I'll take my time and do a more detailed/thorough job on the actual paint job, but the effect is looking good in my book :) The process (spliced and diced from various tutorials and modified to suit the materials I could find)? Blast the craft foam with the heat gun, spray (and let dry) three light coats of mod podge, two coats of tremclad primer, two coats of rustoleum metallic cherry red, then I used acrylic for the detail work, and finally, three coats of tremclad clear coat. It's hard to tell from the photos, but the finish is just perfectly metallic and beautiful! Loving it! I also tested it out on my first test cartridge, which was a total failure because the etching I did with the wood burner didn't translate well once painted, and my painter's tape didn't hold up to the brute force of the spraypaint, but you live, you learn, and the light test still looked awesome! Check out my paint tests! (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/xylenix/Rubi-PaintTest.jpg)

Oh, and I finally finished posting all of the parts of my Moxxi and Dr. Zed costume tutorials over at my blog - http://crankypantschronicles.blogspot.ca! I've been working on the blasted things for months, so it's nice to finish, but now I'll have to find new things to post about! Oh well, I'll be able to get going on Rubi and Gaige tutorials soon enough ;)

Hope everyone else is having fun with the Loot Hunt, and that there are more cosplayers working on Borderlands costumes out there :)

oh that loot hunt thing i have only missed like 4 of the people so far and yeah that sucks that you cant win anything i hope i can at least try and get something. been trying everyday to kill the person they want you to kill.

your rubi looks so awesome so far. i am in the midst of painting a squirt gun right now and so far i have just covered over the awefull looking orange and not i will go to buy cheap paint to paint it like i did my class mod lol

Not being able to win hasn't held me back, so I've been ruthlessly hunting each bounty! I've missed a few due to my busy schedule, but I got the rest :) So far my favourites have been the Baby Maker (used it to finish off my boomerbang challenge) and Longbow (which I had already had one of, but having another is still badass).

Thanks :) I'm loving how it's turning out so far! I went out and got my switch, soldered it in, and discovered that the blasted thing was momentary (on)off, meaning you have to hold it on for it to light up :( Boo. Last thing I need it to run around holding the trigger on and putting extra stress on the gun. So I went out today and picked up the smallest on/off click button switch I could find - hope it fits! While I was waiting, I got to work on my grenade mod! I chose it because I thought it would be easy... I discovered I was wrong. I'm 8h in at this point - but hey, I think it's looking good! I'll post some pics tomorrow :)

Hope your squirt gun turns out really well, can't wait to see how your paint job looks!

Aww, poor widdle gun all sad and alone ;) I'm sure you'll get there sooner or later!

i finished my swords and such so i need to just glue the stones on them. funny thing is every time i go to get glue i come back with everything but glue ><
I have that issue too, I'll even make lists for myself, but somehow I end up getting home without whatever was most important. Oops!

And speaking of oops, I totally forgot to post the grenade mod pics I promised (oops!) - voila!

All the pieces before assembly

Windows installed, lights installed, bottom together

And I put in some more work on my shoes! No pics, but just a few more coats of paint and I can build on the bits I need to make the proper toe and heel cap! Here's hoping it works like my brain is telling me it should :P Then I'll be making the vault symbol appliqué out of craft foam, gluing that bad boy on, and rigging the shoes so I don't have to tie them on. In the game, there's no bow on Gaige's shoes, so I'll be using elastics in place of the laces so I can just stretch my way in and out :)

Only 24 days to go

I didn't see any mention of it in any of the posts, but! I am currently working on a 1:1 scale version of the Dahl Sabre turret. You know, to sit in my house and make my landlord wonder what I do in my spare time. I wasn't sure if anyone was interested or not. I can put pictures up if anyone is interested, well...once I find my camera.

Didn't get any actual work done today, but I did pick up a fitted jacket pattern to mod for my Gaige vest. I had been planning on making my own pattern off a little jacket I already own, but I wanted a physical pattern, and didn't really have the time left to source pattern paper and draft it at this point. I actually can't wait to get to work on the actual fabric parts of the costume now :)

To quote Ellie - "That's lookin' sweet as hell!" But then again your red one was pretty hot too ;) I love the little details you put in like the cell shading on the stripy stocking and the blood spatter on the underside of the tails - awesome work all around!

As for the top hat, I made my own (http://crankypantschronicles.blogspot.ca/2013/09/moxxi-part-10-hats-off.html). It's far from perfect, but I think I spent a grand total of like, 2h on it in my rush to be ready in time for Comiccon - maybe if I'd taken more time, it would have been! I still mean to re-make the darn thing ;) Good luck!

So Con weekend came and went, but Gaige didn't get finished. I worked my butt off trying to get everything together in time, but as I was frantically trying to style my wig at 6:00 pm Friday, I realized there was just too much work left, and that even if I worked ALL NIGHT, I might have a costume to wear, but I wouldn't be satisfied with it. :(

So I took the remaining time to refurbish Moxxi a little. I fixed the bias tape in the front where it had pulled away from the fabric a little, added a velcro closure at the top in the front (where the flap crosses over) to really lock everything shut (I had had a few snaps there, but it wasn't enough to tame the tatas), and made a whoooooole bunch of new buttons - six to replace the ones I had lost in my first wear as I thought hot glue would hold, and eight more to add to the spats. I also moved the buttons up as they weren't high enough the first time (sadly, they STILL weren't, but I'll try to fix that in the future). Then I glued them all on (to under-buttons, as I didn't want thread showing because in the game Moxxi's buttons have no thread) with e6000, which will never let go, ever - I didn't lose a single one over the course of the Saturday wear! My only regret is that I could only find one of my gloves, so I had to spend the whole day gloveless. I realize most people wouldn't notice, but it bugged the crap out of me :P

All in all, a great day, though this time I only ran into ONE other Borderlands cosplayer, a Maya I had met at Comiccon in May. On the Sunday I found a psycho, but I was wearing my Robin costume then, so I just snapped a pic of her.

Gaige WILL be finished (I've spent way too much money and time NOT to finish her) but I probably won't get to wear her until next December's Pop Expo, as I already had plans for May. I'll still play with her over the next little while, I really was close to finishing, but now I can take a little more time and really get the details in there. I'll try to post a few progress shots tomorrow :)

Sorry I've been out so long! It was a super busy December, and then I ran away for two weeks for Christmas/New Years, but I'm home now and ready to get back to work!! At least a little.

Basically, we're moving in February. My goal is to get some of the pieces I have laying around assembled into actual things (vest and gun, I'm looking at you) so that I don't lose anything or get anything important squished in the move. I have a little time off at the beginning of next week, so hopefully I'll have some updates soon :)

How's your gun coming along, humanoidrkangel?

Awwwww, no worries, I sure won't call you lazy, I haven't done a singe thing on Gaige since I last posted :( Just under a month until the big move, and I still have bits and pieces of costume chilling around the apartment - and I really will need to pack away my craft/cosplay corner sooner or later. I thing the thing demotivating me most is that I won't even be able to wear the costume for well over a year. My next con is in May, but I have other plans for that for VERY specific reasons, and I want to get working on that costume, but I don't want to do that until I finish Gaige... It's like a catch-22. Oh well, I really need to get some work done soon! Hope you enjoy/enjoyed your con!!

OH I HAD TONS OF FUN!!! XD aaaannnnndddd sadly while i was there my gaige arm was well....sadly i must hold a funeral for it. i set the top part down for like a sec to participate in a League of Legends tournament and while it was on the ground it some how had gotten smashed T^T and also the hand pieces were left in the cold long enough to stiffen and crack the paint when i put it on. i guess thats is a way of the arm telling me to make a new one. RIP former Gaige arm T^T

Hey everyone! Just wanted to pop in and share some work. My group is planning a Borderlands 2 group for a May con, and I'm currently working on my 3rd Gaige outfit (yes, 3rd) as well as a Lilith costume at the moment. I'm doing Gaige's Stark Raving colors (the black, magenta, and cyan one. Apparently there's 2 outfits with that same name) The only things I need to make are the jacket and leggings, maybe another lunchbox. Jacket's almost done too.

I wanted to share a photo of my arm though. Not the best picture of course. I haven't had a chance for a good photoshoot. I used worbla and craft foam, and it's painted with acrylics and Sophisticated Finishes (awesome stuff, btw!) Definitely my favorite part of the costume though. If anyone has questions on their Gaige I'd be more than happy to help. I'm at that point where I could probably make this outfit in my sleep, lol.

I hope to get around and actually post some photos of my props and costume up within the coming months.

Here are the photos:

If you have a minute, please let me know what do you think about it! :) Non sewn stuff is mostly made out of EVA foam covered with wood glue, sanded and painted with acrylic paints. I was also trying to use things which I could find at my house(like plastic tube and notebook's hard cover for the padlock). Shoes are the only thing that I didn't make from scratch xD Ok... and a wig xDDD

Saw it, awesome work, I love your deathtrap! Oh, and awesome work on the cell shading everywhere, looks great :)

I think I've gotten to the point where I'm going to have to give up on further work on my poor neglected Gaige until we get to the new house. The big move is in TWO WEEKS and I still have so much damn packing to do. I just don't know how I'm going to safely pack all my incomplete bits and pieces without anything getting damaged :( So annoyed at myself for putting it off, but as I said, with the wear date being pushed back to probably next December, it's hard to motivate myself to get the heck to work.

@ladycrankypants awe that sucks. understand lack of moviation while moving. ugh i dreaded the two times i had to move. never knew i had so much stuff till i had to pack it then unpack it all lol. well i guess thats a good thing. but at least you have plenty of time to work on gaige C: and have plenty of time to work on the part that is the worst and that is the arm. lol

i need to really remake my arm and the this time i want to make it so much better then this one i have here. but i was able to make the top part that got smashed a little to form it back to where it looks ok. but the paint has cracks on it and the lines where the foam folded in. it looks more used but im still sad that people were not careful next to me. :c i guess it is time to move on and make a better one lol lets hope tho that i am able to do it XD

Thank you, I'm glad you like it :)
There is a story behind my Deathtrap. I was planning to have him on my skit, but due to soooooo many exams before a convention I wasn't able to work on him. I thought that I have to let it go, but my friend came to my house day before the con with tons of cardboard, tape and paints xDDDD We haven't slept but we did it :D But sadly Deathtrap didn't survive going back home :\ Guess we need to make another one, but this time out of something more solid than cardboard :P
Cell Shading was sometimes pain in the ass, cause I wanted everything to look cartoonish. It's not visible on the photos, but even small pieces are painted like that :)

My arm was almost damaged too. It didn't happen only thanks to that I covered the foam with lots of wood glue xD I wish people would be more careful sometimes.

Hey, I was coming through the forum and saw this thread and decided to drop my questions here. I'm new to this, but I really want to do a cosplay of the Badass Marauder from BL2 (the one that looks like Ex-Crimson Lance turned Bandit, you know the one) for the next 'con i go to. I have broken down the project to several parts:

1. Helmet & face mask
2. Clothes
3. Gear
4. Bandit scavenged weaponry

The snag right now is part 1, the face mask specifically. I have the right helmet, but i dont know what to do for the mask? I first tried to modify an all skull mask i had, but for some reason i used super glue to put a plasticard plate + teeth on it and now the fumes prevent me from putting it on (yes, dumb move by me >_< ). So, now that im rethinking it, i wonder if i should go and get another one or look for a different one to modify.

Also, do you guys recommend Hot glue or something else when putting together a mask?

pic below for reference

It depends on what you're making the mask out of. Hot glue will work great for foam. It'll also work for some plastics, but a pvc glue will work better.

So...curious if anyone's working on some Pre Sequel costumes? I just started on one Friday, and already have a good amount of work put into it. Also, I have some pix of my Gaige up from Anime Central back in May. There's still some work I'd like to do on it though. I would love to make DT someday, and I'm hoping we can redo my Conference Call; we did a last minute one so I could at least have a gun for the con. I think I was the only one who wasn't carrying a modded nerf gun, lol. I'm also working on a Lilith (BL2) and a Maya for myself, and (hopefully) a Zer0 for my fiance. So many Borderlands cosplays, so little time.

Alot of my progress is posted on our fb page right now. If anyone has questions,
please ask. I love answering.
